Capillary trapping of various nanomaterials on additively manufactured scaffolds for 3D micro-/nanofabrication

High-precision additive manufacturing technologies, such as two-photon polymerization, are mainly limited to photo-curable polymers and currently lacks the possibility to produce multimaterial components. Herein, we report a physically bottom-up assembly strategy that leverages capillary force to trap various nanomaterials and assemble them onto three-dimensional (3D) microscaffolds. This capillary-trapping strategy enables precise and uniform assembly of nanomaterials into versatile 3D microstructures with high uniformity and mass loading. Our approach applies to diverse materials irrespective of their physiochemical properties, including polymers, metals, metal oxides, and others. It can integrate at least four different material types into a single 3D microstructure in a sequential, layer-by-layer manner, opening immense possibilities for tailored functionalities on demand. Furthermore, the 3D microscaffolds are removable, facilitating the creation of pure material-based 3D microstructures. This universal 3D micro-/nanofabrication technique with various nanomaterials enables the creation of advanced miniature devices with potential applications in multifunctional microrobots and smart micromachines.

Direct Synthesis of CuPd Icosahedra Supercrystals Studied by In Situ X-Ray Scattering

Nanocrystal self-assembly into supercrystals provides a versatile platform for creating novel materials and devices with tailored properties. While common self-assembly strategies imply the use of purified nanoparticles after synthesis, conversion of chemical precursors directly into nanocrystals and then supercrystals in simple procedures has been rarely reported. Here, the nucleation and growth of CuPd icosahedra and their consecutive assembly into large closed-packed face-centered cubic (fcc) supercrystals are studied. To this end, the study simultaneously and in situ measures X-ray total scattering with pair distribution function analysis (TS-PDF) and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). It is found that the supercrystals' formation is preceded by an intermediate dense phase of nanocrystals displaying short-range order (SRO). It is further shown that the organization of oleic acid/oleylamine surfactants into lamellar structures likely drives the emergence of the SRO phase and later of the supercrystals by reducing the volume accessible to particle diffusion. The supercrystals' formation as well as their disassembly are triggered by temperature. The study demonstrates that ordering of solvent molecules can be crucial in the direct synthesis of supercrystals. The study also provides a general approach to investigate novel preparation routes of supercrystals in situ and across several length scales via X-ray scattering.

Self-assembly behavior and adhesive performance of imidazolium cation grafted cellulose nanocrystals in confined space

Confined evaporation-induced self-assembly (C-EISA) is a powerful technique to guide disordered nanoparticles into long-range organized structures. Herein, we investigate the C-EISA behavior of 1-butyl-3-vinylimidazolium cation ([VBIm]+) grafted cellulose nanocrystals (CNC-C) in a parallel-plates confined geometry. Interestingly, CNC-C can spontaneously assemble into maze-like patterns with branch dimensions on the micrometer scale and uniformly distributed throughout the confined space, which is completely different from the lamellar self-assembly patterns of unmodified CNCs. Combining in situ observations and microscopic characterization, we speculate that the formation of maze-like patterns originates from the reduction of colloidal stability induced by the grafted imidazolium cations. The electrostatic attraction between CNC-C aggregated bundles and glass substrates acts as anchor points, thereby leading to the unstable motion of the liquid-air menisci during the inward intrusion of air. Due to the physicochemical properties and unique C-EISA behavior, the CNC-C based adhesive can maintain adhesion at temperatures of ca. 200 °C, while rapidly debonding when immersed in water, demonstrating the potential to be used as stimuli-responsive temporary or removable adhesives. Furthermore, the strategy proposed in this work for achieving CNCs patterning is also promising to be extended to other anisotropic rod-shaped nanoparticles.

Controlling Spatial Morphology of Microparticle Deposits via Thermocapillary Flows: Effect of Boundary Geometry

The production of particle deposits with a desired distribution geometry has significant potential for materials science, printing, and coating technologies. Most methods for achieving well-defined assemblies rely on the spontaneous evaporation of colloidal solutions on substrates with predetermined properties, or on precise control of particle arrangement by external stimuli. Here, we present a combined method that enables the production of centimeter-scale microparticle deposits with a desired geometric shape. The method is based on controlling the massive transport of microparticles by thermocapillary flow in a layer of volatile liquid in a cell with borders of the desired geometry. Capillary forces cause the liquid to be distributed in the cell, forming corner wetting menisci and the flat layer in the central area. The formation of particle deposits occurs in two stages, determined by the flow regime. At the initial stage, the axisymmetric thermocapillary flow occurs in the flat part of the layer, resulting in the circular shape of the particle deposit. During the transition to the second stage of assembling thermocapillary flow is localized in the corner wetting menisci that results in reshaping the current particle deposit to match the geometry of the cell borders. Here, we demonstrated the creation of circular, square, and triangular shapes of the patterns of polystyrene microparticles using a point heater located at the geometric center of the cell. The proposed method is reliable, easy to implement, and potentially capable of producing a wide variety of deposit geometries, making it an attractive technique for patterning and modifying surface properties with particles of any type.

Solution-Processable Route for Large-Area Uniform 2D Semiconductor Nanofilms

The semiconductor thin film engineering technique plays a key role in the development of advanced electronics. Printing uniform nanofilms on freeform surfaces with high efficiency and low cost is significant for actual industrialization in electronics. Herein, a high-throughput colloidal printing (HTCP) strategy is reported for fabricating large-area and uniform semiconductor nanofilms on freeform surfaces. High-throughput and uniform printing rely on the balance of atomization and evaporation, as well as the introduced thermal Marangoni flows of colloidal dispersion, that suppresses outward capillary flows. Colloidal printing with in situ heating enables the fast fabrication of large-area semiconductor nanofilms on freeform surfaces, such as SiO2/Si, Al2O3, quartz glass, poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET), Al foil, plastic tube, and Ni foam, expanding their technological applications where substrates are essential. The printed SnS2 nanofilms are integrated into thin-film semiconductor gas sensors with one of the fastest responses (8 s) while maintaining the highest sensitivity (Rg/Ra = 21) (toward 10 ppm NO2), as well as an ultralow limit of detection (LOD) of 46 ppt. The ability to print uniform semiconductor nanofilms on freeform surfaces with high-throughput promises the development of next-generation electronics with low cost and high efficiency.

Evaporation-induced self-assembly of liquid crystal biopolymers

Evaporation-induced self-assembly (EISA) is a process that has gained significant attention in recent years due to its fundamental science and potential applications in materials science and nanotechnology. This technique involves controlled drying of a solution or dispersion of materials, forming structures with specific shapes and sizes. In particular, liquid crystal (LC) biopolymers have emerged as promising candidates for EISA due to their highly ordered structures and biocompatible properties after deposition. This review provides an overview of recent progress in the EISA of LC biopolymers, including DNA, nanocellulose, viruses, and other biopolymers. The underlying self-assembly mechanisms, the effects of different processing conditions, and the potential applications of the resulting structures are discussed.

A Novel Approach for Colloidal Lithography: From Dry Particle Assembly to High-Throughput Nanofabrication

We introduce a novel approach for colloidal lithography based on the dry particle assembly into a dense monolayer on an elastomer, followed by mechanical transfer to a substrate of any material and curvature. This method can be implemented either manually or automatically and it produces large area patterns with the quality obtained by the state-of-the-art colloidal lithography at a very high throughput. We first demonstrated the fabrication of nanopatterns with a periodicity ranging between 200 nm and 2 μm. We then demonstrated two nanotechnological applications of this approach. The first one is antireflective structures, fabricated on silicon and sapphire, with different geometries including arrays of bumps and holes and adjusted for different spectral ranges. The second one is smart 3D nanostructures for mechanostimulation of T cells that are used for their effective proliferation, with potential application in cancer immunotherapy. This new approach unleashes the potential of bottom-up nanofabrication and paves the way for nanoscale devices and systems in numerous applications.

Prismatic Confinement Induces Tunable Orientation in Plasmonic Supercrystals

Throughout history scientists have looked to Nature for inspiration and attempted to replicate intricate complex structures formed by self-assembly. In the context of synthetic supercrystals, achieving such complexity remains a challenge due to the highly symmetric nature of most nanoparticles (NPs). Previous works have shown intricate coupling between the self-assembly of NPs and confinement in templates, such as emulsion droplets (spherical confinement) or tubes (cylindrical confinement). This study focuses on the interplay between anisotropic NP shape and tunable "prismatic confinement" leading to the self-assembly of supercrystals in cavities featuring polygonal cross sections. A multiscale characterization strategy is employed to investigate the orientation and structure of the supercrystals locally and at the ensemble level. Our findings highlight the role of the mold interface in guiding the growth of distinct crystal domains: each side of the mold directs the formation of a monodomain that extends until it encounters another, leading to the creation of grain boundaries. Computer simulations in smaller prismatic cavities were conducted to predict the effect of an increased confinement. Comparison between prismatic and cylindrical confinements shows that flat interfaces are key to orienting the growth of supercrystals. This work shows a method of inducing orientation in plasmonic supercrystals and controlling their textural defects, thus offering insight into the design of functional metasurfaces and hierarchically structured devices.

Micropatterning of biologically derived surfaces with functional clay nanotubes

Micropatterning of biological surfaces performed via assembly of nano-blocks is an efficient design method for functional materials with complex organic-inorganic architecture. Halloysite clay nanotubes with high aspect ratios and empty lumens have attracted widespread interest for aligned biocompatible composite production. Here, we give our vision of advances in interfacial self-assembly techniques for these natural nanotubes. Highly ordered micropatterns of halloysite, such as coffee rings, regular strips, and concentric circles, can be obtained through high-temperature evaporation-induced self-assembly in a confined space and shear-force brush-induced orientation. Assembly of these clay nanotubes on biological surfaces, including the coating of human or animal hair, wool, and cotton, was generalized with the indication of common features. Halloysite-coated microfibers promise new approaches in cotton and hair dyeing, medical hemostasis, and flame-retardant tissue applications. An interfacial halloysite assembly on oil microdroplets (Pickering emulsion) and its core-shell structure (functionalization with quantum dots) was described in comparison with microfiber nanoclay coatings. In addition to being abundantly available in nature, halloysite is also biosafe, which makes its spontaneous surface micropatterning prospective for high-performance materials, and it is a promising technique with potential for an industrial scale-up.

Nanoparticle Assembly: From Self-Organization to Controlled Micropatterning for Enhanced Functionalities

Nanoparticles form long-range micropatterns via self-assembly or directed self-assembly with superior mechanical, electrical, optical, magnetic, chemical, and other functional properties for broad applications, such as structural supports, thermal exchangers, optoelectronics, microelectronics, and robotics. The precisely defined particle assembly at the nanoscale with simultaneously scalable patterning at the microscale is indispensable for enabling functionality and improving the performance of devices. This article provides a comprehensive review of nanoparticle assembly formed primarily via the balance of forces at the nanoscale (e.g., van der Waals, colloidal, capillary, convection, and chemical forces) and nanoparticle-template interactions (e.g., physical confinement, chemical functionalization, additive layer-upon-layer). The review commences with a general overview of nanoparticle self-assembly, with the state-of-the-art literature review and motivation. It subsequently reviews the recent progress in nanoparticle assembly without the presence of surface templates. Manufacturing techniques for surface template fabrication and their influence on nanoparticle assembly efficiency and effectiveness are then explored. The primary focus is the spatial organization and orientational preference of nanoparticles on non-templated and pre-templated surfaces in a controlled manner. Moreover, the article discusses broad applications of micropatterned surfaces, encompassing various fields. Finally, the review concludes with a summary of manufacturing methods, their limitations, and future trends in nanoparticle assembly.

Simultaneously Suppressing the Coffee Ring Effect of Solutes with Different Sizes

Suppressing the coffee ring effect (CRE), which improves the uniformity of deposition, has attracted great attention. Usually, a realistic system contains solutes of various sizes. Large particles preferentially settle onto the substrate under gravity, separated from small particles even when CRE is suppressed, which generates nonuniformity in another way. This hinders small particles from filling the gaps at the deposition-substrate interface, leaving a frail deposition. Here, the CRE of polydispersed solutes is simultaneously suppressed, and a more uniform deposition is achieved by suspending the drop together with adding trace amounts of cations. The gaps tend to be filled, which makes the deposition bind more tightly. Analysis shows that gravity coordinates with the interactions that mediate the attraction between particles and the substrate, resulting in the coinstantaneous adsorption of all particles. This work adds another dimension to the suppression of CRE, improving the uniformity of deposition in complex systems and paving the way for the development of techniques in diverse manufacturing industries.

Multifunctional, Hybrid Materials Design via Spray-Drying: Much more than Just Drying

Spray-drying is a popular and well-known "drying tool" for engineers. This perspective highlights that, beyond this application, spray-drying is a very interesting and powerful tool for materials chemists to enable the design of multifunctional and hybrid materials. Upon spray-drying, the confined space of a liquid droplet is narrowed down, and its ingredients are forced together upon "falling dry." As  detailed in this article, this enables the following material formation strategies either individually or even in combination: nanoparticles and/or molecules can be assembled; precipitation reactions as well as chemical syntheses can be performed; and templated materials can be designed. Beyond this, fragile moieties can be processed, or "precursor materials" be prepared. Post-treatment of spray-dried objects eventually enables the next level in the design of complex materials. Using spray-drying to design (particulate) materials comes with many advantages-but also with many challenges-all of which are outlined here. It is believed that multifunctional, hybrid materials, made via spray-drying, enable very unique property combinations that are particularly highly promising in myriad applications-of which catalysis, diagnostics, purification, storage, and information are highlighted.

Confinement Effects on the Structure of Entropy-Induced Supercrystals

Depletion-induced self-assembly is routinely used to separate plasmonic nanoparticles (NPs) of different shapes, but less often for its ability to create supercrystals (SCs) in suspension. Therefore, these plasmonic assemblies have not yet reached a high level of maturity and their in-depth characterization by a combination of in situ techniques is still very much needed. In this work, gold triangles (AuNTs) and silver nanorods (AgNRs) are assembled by depletion-induced self-assembly. Small Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis shows that the AuNTs and AgNRs form 3D and 2D hexagonal lattices in bulk, respectively. The colloidal crystals are also imaged by in situ Liquid-Cell Transmission Electron Microscopy. Under confinement, the affinity of the NPs for the liquid cell windows reduces their ability to stack perpendicularly to the membrane and lead to SCs with a lower dimensionality than their bulk counterparts. Moreover, extended beam irradiation leads to disassembly of the lattices, which is well described by a model accounting for the desorption kinetics highlighting the key role of the NP-membrane interaction in the structural properties of SCs in the liquid-cell. The results shed light on the reconfigurability of NP superlattices obtained by depletion-induced self-assembly, which can rearrange under confinement.

Recent advances in whiskey analysis for authentication, discrimination, and quality control

In order to safeguard authentic whiskey products from fraudulent or counterfeit practices, high throughput solutions that provide robust, rapid, and reliable solutions are required. The implementation of some analytical strategies is quite challenging or costly in routine analysis. Qualitative screening of whiskey products has been explored, but due to the nonspecificity of the chemical compounds, a more quantitative confirmatory technique is required to validate the result of the whiskey analysis. Hence, combining analytical and chemometric methods has been fundamental in whiskey sample differentiation and classification. A comprehensive update on the most relevant and current analytical techniques, including spectroscopic, chromatographic, and novel technologies employed within the last 5 years in whiskey analysis for authentication, discrimination, and quality control, are presented. Furthermore, the technical challenges in employing these analytical techniques, future trends, and perspectives are emphasized.

Chemical and Physical Properties of Photonic Noble-Metal Nanomaterials

Colloidal noble metal nanoparticles (NPs) are composed of metal cores and organic or inorganic ligand shells. These NPs support size- and shape-dependent plasmonic resonances. They can be assembled from dispersions into artificial metamolecules which have collective plasmonic resonances originating from coupled bright and dark optical electric and magnetic modes that form depending on the size and shape of the constituent NPs and their number, arrangement, and interparticle distance. NPs can also be assembled into extended 2D and 3D metamaterials that are glassy thin films or ordered thin films or crystals, also known as superlattices and supercrystals. The metamaterials have tunable optical properties that depend on the size, shape, and composition of the NPs, and on the number of NP layers and their interparticle distance. Interestingly, strong light-matter interactions in superlattices form plasmon polaritons. Tunable interparticle distances allow designer materials with dielectric functions tailorable from that characteristic of an insulator to that of a metal, and serve as strong optical absorbers or scatterers, respectively. In combination with lithography techniques, these extended assemblies can be patterned to create subwavelength NP superstructures and form large-area 2D and 3D metamaterials that manipulate the amplitude, phase, and polarization of transmitted or reflected light.

Dynamic Control over Hierarchically Dendritic Architectures of Simple Heterogenous Monomers by Living Supramolecular Assembly

The successful preparation of supramolecular block copolymers (SBCPs) by living supramolecular assembly technology requires two kinetic systems in which both the seed (nucleus) and heterogenous monomer providers are in non-equilibrium. However, employing simple monomers to construct the SBCPs via this technology is almost impossible because the low spontaneous nucleation barrier of simple molecules prevents the formation of kinetic states. Here, with the help of confinement from layered double hydroxide (LDH), various simple monomers successfully form living supramolecular co-assemblies (LSCA). LDH overcomes a considerable energy barrier to obtain living seeds to support the growth of the inactivated second monomer. The ordered LDH topology is sequentially mapped to the seed, second monomer, and binding sites. Thus, the multidirectional binding sites are endowed with the ability to branch, making the branch length of dendritic LSCA reach its maximum value of 3.5 cm so far. The strategy of universality will guide exploration into the development of multi-function and multi-topology advanced supramolecular co-assemblies.

Three-Dimensional Coffee-Ring Effect Induced Deposition on Foam Surface for Enhanced Photothermal Conversion

Uniformly depositing a thin layer of functional constituents on porous foam is attractive to realize their concentrated interfacial application. Here, a simple but robust polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-mediated evaporation drying strategy to achieve uniform surface deposition on melamine foam (MF) is introduced. Solutes can be accumulated homogeneously to the surface periphery of MF due to the enhanced coffee-ring effect of PVA and its stabilizing effect on various functional constituents, including molecules and colloidal particles. The deposition thickness is positively correlated with the feeding amounts of PVA but seems to be independent of drying temperature. 3D outward capillary flow driven by the combination of contact surface pinning and continual interfacial evaporation induces the forming of core-shell foams. The enhanced interfacial photothermal effect and solar desalination performance using PVA/polypyrrole-coated MF as a Janus solar evaporator are demonstrated.

Kinetics of Lipophilic Pesticide Uptake by Living Maize

We report the uptake of a lipophilic fungicide into the cuticle of living leaves of young maize from droplets of a suspension concentrate. The action of a "coffee-ring" effect is demonstrated during fungicide formulation drying, and the fungicide particle distribution is quantified. We develop a simple, two-dimensional model of uptake leading to a "reservoir" of cuticular fungicide. This model allows inferences of physicochemical properties for fungicides inside the cuticular medium. The diffusion coefficient closely agrees with literature penetration experiments (D_cut ≈ 10^-18 m² s^-1). The logarithm of the inferred cuticle-water partition coefficient log₁₀ K_cw = 6.03 ± 0.04 is consistent with ethyl acetate as a model solvent for the maize cuticle. Two limiting kinetic uptake regimes are inferred from the model for short and long times, with the transition resulting from longitudinal saturation of the cuticle beneath the droplet. We discuss the strengths, limitations, and generalizability of our model within the "cuticle reservoir" approximation.

A simple approach for coffee-ring suppression yielding homogeneous drying patterns of ZnO and TiO2 nanoparticles

Evaporation-induced self-assembly in colloidal droplets is a method for organising nanoparticles on substrates, with various resulting patterns. The coffee-ring pattern is among the most common ones, but its non-uniformity limits its applicability, which led to efforts for developing coffee-ring suppression strategies. Considering the wide applicability of ZnO and TiO₂ nanoparticles, there is a high demand for practical means to deposit them as uniform films. Here, we present a simple approach for obtaining highly uniform thin films of ZnO and TiO₂ nanoparticles by drop-coating in ambient conditions, without using surfactants or other surface chemistry modifications. Disc-like films were obtained via a restricted evaporation achieved by covering the droplets with a lid during drying, seconded by the relatively high sedimentation rate of these nanoparticles. To better understand the assembly mechanism, the influence of suspension concentration, type and temperature of the substrate, droplet volume, colloid type, and evaporation rate were studied. The method allows preparing disc-like nanoparticle films with a good control over their diameter and thickness, onto different kinds of substrates (glass, Si, polyethylene terephthalate, polystyrene). By fabricating both two-dimensional lattices and custom disc patterns we highlight the versatility of this drop-coating method and its potential for, e.g., automatized serial production processes.

Effect of Solvent on Convectively Driven Silica Particle Assembly: Decoupling Surface Tension, Viscosity, and Evaporation Rate

The process of convectively self-assembling particles in films suffers from low reproducibility due to its high dependency on particle concentration, as well as a variety of interactions and physical parameters. Inhomogeneities in flow rates and instabilities at the air-liquid interface are mostly responsible for reproducibility issues. These problems are aggravated by adding multiple components to the dispersion, such as binary solvent mixtures or surfactant/polymer additives, both common approaches to control stick-slip behavior. When an additive is used, not only does it change the surface tension, but also the viscosity and the evaporation rate. Worse yet, gradients in these three properties can form, which then lead to Marangoni currents. Here, we use a series of alcohols to study the role of viscosity independently of other solvent properties, to show its impact on stick-slip behavior and interband distances. We show that mixtures of glycerol and alcohol or poly(acrylic acid) and alcohol lead to more complex patterning. Marangoni currents are not always observed in co-solvent systems, being dependent on the rate of solvent evaporation. To produce homogeneous particle assemblies and control stick-slip behavior, gradients must be avoided, and the surface tension and viscosity need both be carefully controlled.

Flapping motion as a fluorescent probe for assembly process involving highly viscous liquid-like cluster intermediates during evaporative crystallization

Fluorescence probes are widely used to assess the molecular environment based on their photo-physical properties. Specifically, flexible and aromatic photo-functional system (FLAP) is unique viscosity probe owing to the excited-state planarization of anthracene wings. We have previously applied fluorescence spectroscopy to monitor the evaporative crystallization of solvents. The fluorescence color and spectral changes, which depend on the aggregation form, enable direct fluorescence visualization during evaporative crystallization. The fluorescence visualization of the liquid-like cluster intermediate proposed in the two-step nucleation model for the nucleation process has been achieved. However, the physical properties of these clusters, especially the viscosity, molecular motion, and intermolecular interactions, are still unclear. In this study, FLAPs are used as probes for local-viscosity changes and space limitations of the liquid-like cluster state during evaporative crystallization by observing the fluorescence-spectral changes and using hyperspectral-camera (HSC) imaging. Green emission originates from the monomer in the solution owing to the free-flapping motion. The fluorescence color turns blue with increasing viscosity under crowding conditions. If the survival time of the liquid-like cluster state is sufficient, crystalline phase (R-phase) formation proceeds via a 2-fold π-stacked array of the V-shaped molecules. It is difficult to form the V-shaped stacked columnar structures in the liquid-like cluster state region, resulting in the deposition of head-to-tail dimer structures, such as the yellow-emissive phase (Y-phase). In the case of the FLAP, the stacking intermediate does not form during solvent evaporation in the liquid-like cluster; rather, it is deposited in an amorphous form that exhibits blue emission (B-phase). These findings suggest that it is important to the maintenance of the survival time of the liquid-like cluster states to organize and rearrange the stacking forms. We have achieved the fluorescence probing of viscosity changes at local molecular motion with solvent depletion during solvent evaporation for the first time.

Unraveling the Co-Crystallization-Charge Transport Relation in Conjugated Polymer Blends via Meniscus-Assisted Solution-Shearing

The ability to craft the co-crystallization in conjugated polymer blends represents an important endeavor for the enhancement of charge transport. However, simple and efficient approaches to co-crystallization have yet to be realized. Herein, for the first time, a robust meniscus-assisted solution-shearing (MASS) strategy is reported to achieve co-crystallization in the poly(2,5-bis(3-hexylthiophen-2-yl)thieno[3,2-b]thiophene) (PBTTT-C6) and poly(2,5-bis(3-decylthiophen-2-yl)thieno[3,2-b]thiophene) (PBTTT-C10) blended films, and correlate this co-crystalline structure to the charge transport properties. The as-cast PBTTT-C6/PBTTT-C10 blends exhibit co-crystalline or phase-separated structures influenced by their molecular weights. Interestingly, confined-shearing of the initial phase-separated blended solution to MASS produces the formation of their co-crystallization. The co-crystallization kinetics accompanied by the chain packing change and optical properties are scrutinized. Finally, the resulting organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) signify the cocrystal-facilitated charge transport in the blends. Conceptually, this efficient MASS strategy in rendering the co-crystallization in conjugated polymer blends can be readily extended to other conjugated polymer blends of interest for a variety of device applications.

Three-dimensional nanofabrication via ultrafast laser patterning and kinetically regulated material assembly

A major challenge in nanotechnology is the fabrication of complex three-dimensional (3D) structures with desired materials. We present a strategy for fabricating arbitrary 3D nanostructures with a library of materials including metals, metal alloys, 2D materials, oxides, diamond, upconversion materials, semiconductors, polymers, biomaterials, molecular crystals, and inks. Specifically, hydrogels patterned by femtosecond light sheets are used as templates that allow for direct assembly of materials to form designed nanostructures. By fine-tuning the exposure strategy and features of the patterned gel, 2D and 3D structures of 20- to 200-nm resolution are realized. We fabricated nanodevices, including encrypted optical storage and microelectrodes, to demonstrate their designed functionality and precision. These results show that our method provides a systematic solution for nanofabrication across different classes of materials and opens up further possibilities for the design of sophisticated nanodevices.

Evaporation-driven liquid flow in sessile droplets

The evaporation of a sessile droplet spontaneously induces an internal capillary liquid flow. The surface-tension driven minimisation of surface area and/or surface-tension differences at the liquid-gas interface caused by evaporation-induced temperature or chemical gradients set the liquid into motion. This flow drags along suspended material and is one of the keys to control the material deposition in the stain that is left behind by a drying droplet. Applications of this principle range from the control of stain formation in the printing and coating industry, to the analysis of DNA, to forensic and medical research on blood stains, and to the use of evaporation-driven self-assembly for nanotechnology. Therefore, the evaporation of sessile droplets attracts an enormous interest from not only the fluid dynamics, but also the soft matter, chemistry, biology, engineering, nanotechnology and mathematics communities. As a consequence of this broad interest, knowledge on evaporation-driven flows in drying droplets has remained scattered among the different fields, leading to various misconceptions and misinterpretations. In this review we aim to unify these views, and reflect on the current understanding of evaporation-driven liquid flows in sessile droplets in the light of the most recent experimental and theoretical advances. In addition, we outline open questions and indicate promising directions for future research.

Velocity distributions in a gas-gun microparticle accelerator

Here, we build and characterize a single-stage gas-gun microparticle accelerator, where a pressurized gas expands and launches particles on a target. The microparticles in the range of 60-250 μm are accelerated by the expansion of pressurized nitrogen. By using a high-speed camera, we study how the velocity distribution of accelerated particles is modified by particle size, pressure in the gas reservoir, valve's opening time, and diaphragm's thickness and composition. We employ this microparticle accelerator to study the impact of glass particles with diameters of (69 ± 6) μm accelerated at moderate velocities ∼ (10-25) m/s, using films of poly-dimethylsiloxane as targets.

Control of the Drying Patterns for Complex Colloidal Solutions and Their Applications

The uneven deposition at the edges of an evaporating droplet, termed the coffee-ring effect, has been extensively studied during the past few decades to better understand the underlying cause, namely the flow dynamics, and the subsequent patterns formed after drying. The non-uniform evaporation rate across the colloidal droplet hampers the formation of a uniform and homogeneous film in printed electronics, rechargeable batteries, etc., and often causes device failures. This review aims to highlight the diverse range of techniques used to alleviate the coffee-ring effect, from classic methods such as adding chemical additives, applying external sources, and manipulating geometrical configurations to recently developed advancements, specifically using bubbles, humidity, confined systems, etc., which do not involve modification of surface, particle or liquid properties. Each of these methodologies mitigates the edge deposition via multi-body interactions, for example, particle–liquid, particle-particle, particle–solid interfaces and particle–flow interactions. The mechanisms behind each of these approaches help to find methods to inhibit the non-uniform film formation, and the corresponding applications have been discussed together with a critical comparison in detail. This review could pave the way for developing inks and processes to apply in functional coatings and printed electronic devices with improved efficiency and device yield.

One-Pot Self-Assembly of Dual-Color Domes Using Mono-Sized Silica Nanoparticles

Spots with dual structural colors on the skin of some organisms in nature are of tremendous interest due to the unique function of their dye-free colors. However, imitation of them requires complicated manufacturing processes, expensive equipment, and multiple predesigned building blocks. In this work, a one-pot strategy based on the phase-separation-assisted nonuniform self-assembly of monosized silica nanoparticles is developed to construct domes with dual structural colors. In drying poly(ethylene glycol)-dextran-based (PEG-DEX) droplets, monosized nanoparticles distribute nonuniformly in two compartments due to the droplet inner flow and different nanoparticle compatibility with the two phases. The dome colors are derived from the self-assembled nanoparticles and are programmable by regulating the assembly conditions. The one-pot strategy enables the preparation of multicolor using only one type of building block. With the dual-color domes, encrypted patterns with a high volume of contents are designed, showing promising applications in information delivery.

Effect of the Dispersion Process and Nanoparticle Quality on Chemical Sensing Performance

On the surface of chemiresistive films, the scarce heterogeneity of a molecularly capped gold nanoparticle (MCGNP) colloidal dispersion and uneven evaporation of the MCGNP-contained drying drop applied to this surface are among the main factors that affect reproducibility, and repeatable fabrication of thin films of MCGNPs. This article shows that an increase in reproducibility and repeatability is possible using a dispersant and a surfactant during the deposition and annealing processes of the MCGNP. The results show higher sensitivity and accuracy of the sensors for the detection of volatile organic compounds in air and an increased limit of detection. These simple and practical additions might serve as a launching pad for fabrication of other types of thin-film-based sensors.

Fast Self-Assembly of Photonic Crystal Hydrogel for Wearable Strain and Temperature Sensor

Structural colors from photonic crystals (PCs) have attracted emerging attention in the research area of wearable sensors. Conventional self-assembly of PC takes days to weeks. Here, a fast self-assembly method of PC with horizontal precipitation of silica nanoparticles (NPs) in a polydimethylsiloxane fence, which can be completed within 1-4 h depending on the fence parameters, is introduced. The resultant PC exhibits tunable structural colors in the entire visible spectrum. With infiltration of composite hydrogels containing acrylic acid, acrylamide, chitosan, and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) into the gaps of NPs to form an inverse opal PC, a structural color hydrogel that can quickly respond to different stimuli, including strain and temperature, is obtained. Moreover, with the addition of CNTs, the composite PC hydrogel can also output an electronic signal together with optical color changes. Based on these extraordinary responsive behaviors, the PC hydrogel sensor for quantitative feedback to external stimuli of stretching, bending, pressing, and thermal stimuli, with brilliant color change and electronic signal outputs simultaneously, is demonstrated. This fast-assembled PC hydrogel with excellent responsive properties has great potential for applications in wearable devices, mechanical sensors, temperature sensors, and colorimetric displays.

Pattern of an Evaporated Colloidal Droplet on a Porous Membrane Dictated by Competitive Processes of Flow and Absorption

Understanding the deposition pattern formed by an evaporated colloidal drop is of fundamental and technological interest. Such an evaporative process is important in various applications starting from inkjet printing to disease diagnosis. In this work, it is shown that the deposit pattern on a porous membrane can be tuned by varying the colloidal viscosity and membrane pore size. We have used small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) in scanning mode for profiling of deposit morphology and also for estimation of the interparticle correlation. It is demonstrated that low viscosity and small pore size favor a centrally dipped pattern owing to the coffee ring effect, which can be modified to a contrasting centrally peaked pattern by increasing the viscosity and pore size. To comprehend the experimental observations, a computer model has been developed using a continuity equation that well corroborates the experimental observations on the final deposited pattern and also provides the time evolution of the pattern. The work provides a way to tune the pattern of colloidal stain on a porous substrate by controlling flow and absorption.

An experimental and theoretical study of the inward particle drift in contact line deposits

The coffee ring effect, which refers to the formation of a ring-like deposit along the periphery of a dried particle laden sessile drop, is a commonly observed phenomenon. The migration of particles from the interior to the edge of a drying drop as a result of evaporation driven flow directed outwards, is well studied. In this article, we document the inward drift of a coffee stain, which is governed by the descent of the water-air interface of the drying drop due to solvent evaporation. A combination of experimental study and model predictions is undertaken to elucidate the effect of the diameter of particles in the drying drop, the wettability of the substrate on which the drop resides, and the concentration of particles on the inward drift of the coffee stain. This work also suggests a novel method to estimate the coefficient of friction between the particles and the substrate.

Influence of fluid flows on electric double layers in evaporating colloidal sessile droplets

A model is developed for describing the transport of charged colloidal particles in an evaporating sessile droplet on the electrified metal substrate in the presence of a solvent flow. The model takes into account the electric charge of colloidal particles and small ions produced by electrolytic dissociation of the active groups on the colloidal particles and solvent molecules. We employ a system of self-consistent Poisson and Nernst-Planck equations for electric potential and average concentrations of colloidal particles and ions with the appropriate boundary conditions. The fluid dynamics, temperature distribution and evaporation process are described with the Navier-Stokes equations, equations of heat conduction and vapor diffusion in air, respectively. The developed model is used to carry out a first-principles numerical simulation of charged silica colloidal particle transport in an evaporating aqueous droplet. We find that electric double layers can be destroyed by a sufficiently strong fluid flow.

Molecular Aggregation Dynamics via a Liquid-like Cluster Intermediate during Heterogeneous Evaporation as Revealed by Hyperspectral Camera Fluorescence Imaging

A hyperspectral camera (HSC) is a camera with great potential to obtain spectral information at each pixel, together with spatial imaging. HSC fluorescence imaging enables the molecular aggregation dynamics of the evaporative crystallization process to be followed in real-time. The key intermediate liquid-like cluster state for the two-step nucleation mechanism is visualized by the fluorescence color changes of mechanochromic luminescent dibenzoylmethanatoboron difluoride derivatives. Three types of emissive species (Crystal, BG-aggregates, and Amorphous) are generated from monomers in solution (low order and density) via liquid-like cluster (high density and low order) during solvent evaporation. These emissive species have partially different aggregated states based on fluorescence decay and fluorescence excitation spectral measurements. In terms of crystallization dynamics, our results indicate that it is important not only to generate supersaturated states but also to maintain the survival time of the liquid-like cluster. Moreover, we demonstrate that HSC fluorescence imaging can be a powerful tool for visualizing heterogeneous molecular aggregation processes.

Controllable dried patterns of colloidal drops

HYPOTHESIS

When an aqueous colloidal drop dries on a solid substrate, the final pattern of the dried deposit can be manipulated through controlling the internal flow states of the drop.

EXPERIMENTS

We report a strategy to control the dried patterns of aqueous colloidal drop by controlling the drop configurations and relative humidity. For this purpose, both sessile and pendant drops are studied.

FINDING

The capillary flow, which is responsible for coffee-ring, is suppressed by increasing the relative humidity. Then, surprisingly, the internal convection in the pendant drop is significantly stronger than that in the sessile drop. This phenomenon leads to the formation of the disc-like and spot-like dried patterns in the sessile and pendant drop, respectively, which are the results of different interactions between the Marangoni and (buoyancy-induced) natural convections in the sessile and pendant drops. In the sessile drop, the Marangoni and natural convections mutually restrain each other due to their opposite flow directions. In contrast, in the pendant drop, the two convections mutually enhance each other, due to their same flow directions. Thisnew strategy offers a foreign-material-free and external-force-free means to control the dried patterns of the drop.

Multicolor Photonic Pigments for Rotation-Asymmetric Mechanochromic Devices

Photonic crystals are extensively explored to replace inorganic pigments and organic dyes as coloring elements in printing, painting, sensing, and anti-counterfeiting due to their brilliant structural colors, chemical stability, and environmental friendliness. However, most existing photonic-crystal-based pigments can only display monochromatic colors once made, and generating multicolors has to start with designing different building blocks. Here, a novel photonic pigment featuring highly tunable structural colors in the entire visible spectrum, made by the magnetic assembly of monodisperse nanorods into body-centered-tetragonal photonic crystals, is reported. Their prominent magnetic and crystal anisotropy makes it efficient to generate multicolors using one photonic pigment by magnetically controlling the crystal orientation. Further, the combination of angle-dependent diffraction and magnetic orientation control enables the design of rotation-asymmetric photonic films that display distinct patterns and encrypted information in response to rotation. The efficient multicolor generation through precise orientational control makes this novel photonic pigment promising in developing high-performance structural-colored materials and optical devices.

Drying of virus-containing particles: modelling effects of droplet origin and composition

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE

Virus-containing aerosol droplets emitted by breathing, speech or coughing dry rapidly to equilibrium with ambient relative humidity (RH), increasing in solute concentration with effects on virus survival and decreasing in diameter with effects on sedimentation and respiratory uptake. The aim of this paper is to model the effect of ionic and macromolecular solutes on droplet drying and solute concentration.

METHODS

Deliquescence-efflorescence concepts and Kohler theory were used to simulate the evolution of solute concentrations and water activity in respiratory droplets, starting from efflorescence data on mixed NaCl/KCl aerosols and osmotic pressure data on respiratory macromolecules.

RESULTS

In NaCl/KCl solutions total salt concentrations were shown to reach 10-13 M at the efflorescence RH of 40-55%, depending on the K:Na ratio. Dependence on K:Na ratio implies that the evaporation curves differ between aerosols derived from saliva and from airway surfaces. The direct effect of liquid droplet size through the Kelvin term was shown to be smaller and restricted to the evolution of breath emissions. Modelling the effect of proteins and glycoproteins showed that salts determine drying equilibria down to the efflorescence RH, and macromolecules at lower RH.

CONCLUSION

Differences in solute composition between airway surfaces and saliva are predicted to lead to different drying behaviour of droplets emitted by breathing, speech and coughing. These differences may influence the inactivation of viruses.

Morphological and Orientational Controls of Self-Assembly of Gold Nanorods Directed by Evaporative Microflows

Evaporative self-assembly of noble metal nanoparticles into ordered structures holds great promise for fabricating optical and plasmonic devices by virtue of its low cost, high efficiency, and ease of operation. However, poor control of Marangoni flows is one of the challenges accounting for realizing a well-defined assembly. Herein, based on the theoretical analysis of the influence of evaporative intensity on the assembly, two simple but reliable flow-field-confinement platforms are designed to control the evaporative microflows and to work concurrently with depletion forces to enable the regulated self-assembly of gold nanorods. Orientationally ordered assemblies are realized by the designed strong unidirectional microflow in a capillary, and a device-scale assembly of monolayer membrane is obtained by the created weak convection in homemade glass cells. Morphologically diversified superstructure assemblies, such as spherulite-like, boundary-twisted, chiral spiral assemblies, and merging membranes with a π-twisted domain wall, are obtained due to the spontaneous symmetry breaking or in the presence of defects, such as surface steps and screw dislocations. Optical anisotropy and polarization-dependent behaviors of these assemblies are further revealed, implying the potential applications in plasmonic coupling devices and optoelectronic components. An understanding of the entropy-driven assembly behaviors and control of evaporative microflows to guide the self-assembly of gold nanorods provides insights into the general bottom-up approach that is helpful for constructing complex yet robust nanosuperstructures.

Beyond Color: The New Carbon Ink

For thousands of years, carbon ink has been used as a black color pigment for writing and painting purposes. However, recent discoveries of nanocarbon materials, including fullerenes, carbon nanotubes, graphene, and their various derivative forms, together with the advances in large-scale synthesis, are enabling a whole new generation of carbon inks that can serve as an intrinsically programmable materials platform for developing advanced functionalities far beyond color. The marriage between these multifunctional nanocarbon inks with modern printing technologies is facilitating and even transforming many applications, including flexible electronics, wearable and implantable sensors, actuators, and autonomous robotics. This review examines recent progress in the reborn field of carbon inks, highlighting their programmability and multifunctionality for applications in flexible electronics and stimuli-responsive devices. Current challenges and opportunities will also be discussed from a materials science perspective towards the advancement of carbon ink for new applications beyond color.

Large-Area Fabrication of Structurally Colored and Humidity Sensitive Composite Nanofilm via Ultrasonic Spray-Coating

Intelligent structural colors have received extensive attention in recent years due to their diverse applications. However, the large-area, uniform, and cost-effective fabrication of ultra-thin structural color films is still challenging. Here, for the first time, we design and employ an ultrasonic spray-coating technique with non-toxic, green nano-silica and polyvinylpyrrolidone as raw materials, to prepare structural color films on silicon wafers. Due to the addition of polyvinylpyrrolidone, the coffee-ring effect during droplet drying is suppressed and uniform composite films are formed. We further perform a detailed study of the influence of various processing parameters including silica/polyvinylpyrrolidone concentration, substrate temperature, nozzle-to-substrate distance, and number of spray-passes on film roughness and thickness. By increasing the number of spray-passes from 10 to 30, the film thickness from 120 to 340 nm is modulated, resulting in different colors, and large-area and uniform colors on commercial round silicon wafers with 15 cm diameter are achieved. The silica/polyvinylpyrrolidone composite films show strong hydrophilicity and are sensitive to humidity changes, leading to quickly tunable and reversible structural colors. Quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation demonstrates water vapor adsorption and condensation on the nanofilm when increasing environmental humidity. Thereby, ultrasonic spray-coating as a novel film fabrication technique provides a feasible scheme for large-area preparation of intelligent structural colors.

The Effect of Substrate Temperature on the Evaporative Behaviour and Desiccation Patterns of Foetal Bovine Serum Drops

The drying of bio-fluid drops results in the formation of complex patterns, which are morphologically and topographically affected by environmental conditions including temperature. We examine the effect of substrate temperatures between 20 °C and 40 °C, on the evaporative dynamics and dried deposits of foetal bovine serum (FBS) drops. The deposits consist of four zones: a peripheral protein ring, a zone of protein structures, a protein gel, and a central crystalline zone. We investigate the link between the evaporative behaviour, final deposit volume, and cracking. Drops dried at higher substrate temperatures in the range of 20 °C to 35 °C produce deposits of lower final volume. We attribute this to a lower water content and a more brittle gel in the deposits formed at higher temperatures. However, the average deposit volume is higher for drops dried at 40 °C compared to drops dried at 35 °C, indicating protein denaturation. Focusing on the protein ring, we show that the ring volume decreases with increasing temperature from 20 °C to 35 °C, whereas the number of cracks increases due to faster water evaporation. Interestingly, for deposits of drops dried at 40 °C, the ring volume increases, but the number of cracks also increases, suggesting an interplay between water evaporation and increasing strain in the deposits due to protein denaturation.

Coupling morphological and magnetic anisotropy for assembling tetragonal colloidal crystals

Morphological and magnetic anisotropy can be combined in colloidal assembly to create unconventional secondary structures. We show here that magnetite nanorods interact along a critical angle, depending on their aspect ratios and assemble into body-centered tetragonal colloidal crystals. Under a magnetic field, size-dependent attractive and repulsive domains develop on the ends and center of the nanorods, respectively. Our joint experiment-computational multiscale study demonstrates the presence of a critical angle in the attractive domain, which defines the equilibrium bonding states of interacting rods and leads to the formation of non–close-packed yet hard-contact tetragonal crystals. Small-angle x-ray scattering measurement attributes the perfect tetragonal phase to the slow assembly kinetics. The crystals exhibit brilliant structural colors, which can be actively tuned by changing the magnetic field direction. These highly ordered frameworks and well-defined three-dimensional nanochannels may offer new opportunities for manipulating nanoscale chemical transformation, mass transportation, and wave propagation.

Quantitative Analysis of Immunosuppressive Drugs Using Tungsten Disulfide Nanosheet-Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization Mass Spectrometry

For organ transplantation patients, the therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) of immunosuppressive drugs is essential to prevent the toxicity or rejection of the organ. Currently, TDM is done by immunoassays or liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) methods; however, these methods lack specificity or are expensive, require high levels of skill, and offer limited sample throughput. Although matrix-assisted (MA) laser desorption ionization (LDI) mass spectrometry (MS) can provide enhanced throughput and cost-effectiveness, its application in TDM is limited due to the limitations of the matrixes such as a lack of sensitivity and reproducibility. Here, we present an alternative quantification method for the TDM of the immunosuppressive drugs in the blood of organ transplant patients by utilizing laser desorption ionization mass spectrometry (LDI-MS) based on a tungsten disulfide nanosheet, which is well-known for its excellent physicochemical properties such as a strong UV absorbance and high electron mobility. By adopting a microliquid inkjet printing system, a high-throughput analysis of the blood samples with enhanced sensitivity and reproducibility was achieved. Furthermore, up to 80 cases of patient samples were analyzed and the results were compared with those of LC-MS/MS by using Passing-Bablok regression and Bland-Altman analysis to demonstrate that our LDI-MS platform is suitable to replace current TDM techniques. Our approach will facilitate the rapid and accurate analysis of blood samples from a large number of patients for immunosuppressive drug prescriptions.
