Chemoselective Transfer Hydrogenation to Nitroarenes Mediated by Cubane-Type Mo3S4Cluster Catalysts

Ruthenium complexes with triazenide ligands bearing an N-heterocyclic moiety, and their catalytic properties in the reduction of nitroarenes

A series of ruthenium complexes of formulae [RuCl(triazenide)(p-cymene)] have been synthesized using as ligand a triazenide monofunctionalized with an N-heterocyclic moiety. Nuclear magnetic resonance, high resolution mass spectrometry and X-ray diffraction were used to characterize the triazenide ligands and their complexes. In addition, these ruthenium complexes catalyzed the reduction of nitrobenzene to aniline in the presence of sodium borohydride and ethanol as solvent at room temperature. Notably, complex 5 was especially active in the reduction of nitroarenes substituted at the aromatic ring with electron-withdrawing or electron-donating fuctional groups affording the desired arylamines in good to excellent yields (80-100%). The role of the N-heterocyclic moiety on catalysis was explored.

Photocatalytic Reduction of Nitrobenzene to Aniline by an Intriguing {Ru(C6H6)}-Based Heteropolytungstate

In this paper, we have successfully synthesized a structurally novel heteropolytungstate via coordination of four {Ru(C6H6)} and trivacant {TeW9O33} clusters, formulated as Cs4Na2H2[Te2W20O72(H2O){(C6H6)Ru}4]·12H2O (1). Compound 1 inherited the strong absorption of [Ru(C6H6)Cl2]2 in the visible region and {TeW9O33} in the UV region, providing a good basis for photocatalysis. As expected, compound 1 showed good photocatalytic activity in the visible-light-driven reduction of nitrobenzene using N2H4·H2O as a reductant with a yield of 99.8%, a high turnover number (TON = 330), and a high turnover frequency (TOF = 24 h-1). The cyclic experiment of nitrobenzene reduction indicated that compound 1 was an effective and stable heterogeneous catalyst. Finally, the nitrobenzene reduction pathway was affirmed using condensation with azobenzene as a reaction intermediate based on control experiments.

Spin-Crossing in the (Z)-Selective Alkyne Semihydrogenation Mechanism Catalyzed by Mo3S4 Clusters: A Density Functional Theory Exploration

Semihydrogenation of internal alkynes catalyzed by the air-stable imidazolyl amino [Mo3S4Cl3(ImNH2)3]+ cluster selectively affords the (Z)-alkene under soft conditions in excellent yields. Experimental results suggest a sulfur-based mechanism with the formation of a dithiolene adduct through interaction of the alkyne with the bridging sulfur atoms. However, computational studies indicate that this mechanism is unable to explain the experimental outcome: mild reaction conditions, excellent selectivity toward the (Z)-isomer, and complete deuteration of the vinylic positions in the presence of CD3OD and CH3OD. An alternative mechanism that explains the experimental results is proposed. The reaction begins with the hydrogenation of two of the Mo3(μ3-S)(μ-S)3 bridging sulfurs to yield a bis(hydrosulfide) intermediate that performs two sequential hydrogen atom transfers (HAT) from the S-H groups to the alkyne. The first HAT occurs with a spin change from singlet to triplet. After the second HAT, the singlet state is recovered. Although the dithiolene adduct is more stable than the hydrosulfide species, the large energy required for the subsequent H2 addition makes the system evolve via the second alternative pathway to selectively render the (Z)-alkene with a lower overall activation barrier.

Enabling Pd Catalytic Selectivity via Engineering Intermetallic Core@Shell Structure

Core@shell nanoparticles (NPs) have been widely explored to enhance catalysis due to the synergistic effects introduced by their nanoscale interface and surface structures. However, creating a catalytically functional core@shell structure is often a synthetic challenge due to the need to control the shell thickness. Here, we report a one-step synthetic approach to core-shell CuPd@Pd NPs with an intermetallic B2-CuPd core and a thin (∼0.6 nm) Pd shell. This core@shell structure shows enhanced activity toward selective hydrogenation of Ar-NO2 and allows one-pot tandem hydrogenation of Ar-NO2 to Ar-NH2 and its condensation with Ar-CHO to form Ar-N═CH-Ar. DFT calculations indicate that the B2-CuPd core promotes the Pd shell binding to Ar-NO2 more strongly than to Ar-CHO, thereby selectively activating Ar-NO2. The chemoselective catalysis demonstrated by B2-CuPd@Pd can be extended to a broader scope of substrates, allowing green chemistry synthesis of a wide range of functional chemicals and materials.

Unusual Square Pyramidal Chalcogenide Mo5 Cluster with Bridging Pyrazolate-Ligands

The family of chalcogenide molybdenum clusters is well presented in the literature by a series of compounds of nuclearity ranging from binuclear to multinuclear articulating octahedral fragments. Clusters actively studied in the last decades were shown to be promising as components of superconducting, magnetic, and catalytic systems. Here, we report the synthesis and detailed characterization of new and unusual representatives of chalcogenide clusters: square pyramidal complexes [{Mo₅(μ₃-Se)ⁱ₄(μ₄-Se)ⁱ(μ-pz)ⁱ₄}(pzH)^t₅]^1+/2+ (pzH = pyrazole, i = inner, t = terminal). Individually obtained oxidized (2+) and reduced (1+) forms have very close geometry (proven by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis) and are able to reversibly transform into each other, which was confirmed by cyclic voltammetry. Comprehensive characterization of the complexes, both in solid and in solution, confirms the different charge state of molybdenum in clusters (XPS), magnetic properties (EPR), and so on. DFT calculations complement the diverse study of new complexes, expanding the chemistry of molybdenum chalcogenide clusters.

Base-Free Catalytic Hydrogen Production from Formic Acid Mediated by a Cubane-Type Mo3S4 Cluster Hydride

Formic acid (FA) dehydrogenation is an attractive process in the implementation of a hydrogen economy. To make this process greener and less costly, the interest nowadays is moving toward non-noble metal catalysts and additive-free protocols. Efficient protocols using earth abundant first row transition metals, mostly iron, have been developed, but other metals, such as molybdenum, remain practically unexplored. Herein, we present the transformation of FA to form H₂ and CO₂ through a cluster catalysis mechanism mediated by a cuboidal [Mo₃S₄H₃(dmpe)₃]⁺ hydride cluster in the absence of base or any other additive. Our catalyst has proved to be more active and selective than the other molybdenum compounds reported to date for this purpose. Kinetic studies, reaction monitoring, and isolation of the [Mo₃S₄(OCHO)₃(dmpe)₃]⁺ formate reaction intermediate, in combination with DFT calculations, have allowed us to formulate an unambiguous mechanism of FA dehydrogenation. Kinetic studies indicate that the reaction at temperatures up to 60 °C ends at the triformate complex and occurs in a single kinetic step, which can be interpreted in terms of statistical kinetics at the three metal centers. The process starts with the formation of a dihydrogen-bonded species with Mo-H···HOOCH bonds, detected by NMR techniques, followed by hydrogen release and formate coordination. Whereas this process is favored at temperatures up to 60 °C, the subsequent β-hydride elimination that allows for the CO₂ release and closes the catalytic cycle is only completed at higher temperatures. The cycle also operates starting from the [Mo₃S₄(OCHO)₃(dmpe)₃]⁺ formate intermediate, again with preservation of the cluster integrity, which adds our proposal to the list of the infrequent cluster catalysis reaction mechanisms.

Photocatalytic Multielectron Reduction of Nitroarenes to Anilines by Utilizing an Electron-Storable Polyoxometalate-Based Metal-Organic Framework

A powerful approach to generate photocatalysts for the highly selective reduction of nitrobenzene using light as the driving force is a combination of photosensitizers and electron-storable components in a cooperative photocatalysis fashion. Herein, a new precious metal-free photocatalyst, {ZnW-TPT}, was prepared by incorporating a Zn-substituted monovacant Keggin polyanion [SiZnW₁₁O₃₉]^6- and a photoactive organic bridging link 2,4,6-tri(4-pyridyl)-1,3,5-triazine (TPT) into a framework. In this structure, the direct coordination bond between [SiZnW₁₁O₃₉]^6- and the TPT ligand and the π-π interactions between TPT molecules help separate and migrate photogenerated carriers, which improves the photocatalytic activity of {ZnW-TPT}. The photoelectrochemical properties of {ZnW-TPT} were well studied by solid UV-vis absorption, fluorescence, transient photocurrent response, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy tests. {ZnW-TPT} efficiently converts using hydrazine hydrate with 99% conversion and 99% selectivity for anilines under mild conditions.

Molecularly Engineering Defective Basal Planes in Molybdenum Sulfide for the Direct Synthesis of Benzimidazoles by Reductive Coupling of Dinitroarenes with Aldehydes

Developing more sustainable catalytic processes for preparing N-heterocyclic compounds in a less costly, compact, and greener manner from cheap and readily available reagents is highly desirable in modern synthetic chemistry. Herein, we report a straightforward synthesis of benzimidazoles by reductive coupling of o-dinitroarenes with aldehydes in the presence of molecular hydrogen. An innovative molecular cluster-based synthetic strategy that employs Mo₃S₄ complexes as precursors have been used to engineer a sulfur-deficient molybdenum disulfide (MoS₂)-type material displaying structural defects on both the naturally occurring edge positions and along the typically inactive basal planes. By applying this catalyst, a broad range of functionalized 2-substituted benzimidazoles, including bioactive compounds, can be selectively synthesized by such a direct hydrogenative coupling protocol even in the presence of hydrogenation-sensitive functional groups, such as double and triple carbon-carbon bonds, nitrile and ester groups, and halogens as well as diverse types of heteroarenes.

Rhodium-terpyridine Catalyzed Transfer Hydrogenation of Aromatic Nitro Compounds in Water

A rhodium terpyridine complex catalyzed transfer hydrogenation of nitroarenes to anilines with i-PrOH as hydrogen source and water as solvent has been developed. The catalytic system can work at a substrate/catalyst (S/C) ratio of 2000, with a turnover frequency (TOF) up to 3360 h^-1 , which represents one of the most active catalytic transfer hydrogenation systems for nitroarene reduction. The catalytic system is operationally simple and the protocol could be scaled up to 20 gram scale. The water-soluble catalyst bearing a carboxyl group could be recycled 15 times without significant loss of activity.

Half-Sandwich Ruthenium Complexes of Amide-Phosphine Based Ligands: H-Bonding Cavity Assisted Binding and Reduction of Nitro-substrates

We present synthesis and characterization of two half-sandwich Ru(II) complexes supported with amide-phosphine based ligands. These complexes presented a pyridine-2,6-dicarboxamide based pincer cavity, decorated with hydrogen bonds, that participated in the binding of nitro-substrates closer to the Ru(II) centers, which is further supported with binding and docking studies. These ruthenium complexes functioned as the noteworthy catalysts for the borohydride mediated reduction of assorted nitro-substrates. Mechanistic studies not only confirmed the intermediacy of [Ru-H] in the reduction but also asserted the involvement of several organic intermediates during the course of the catalysis. A similar Ru(II) complex that lacked pyridine-2,6-dicarboxamide based pincer cavity substantiated its unique role both in the substrate binding and the subsequent catalysis.

CO-free, aqueous mediated, instant and selective reduction of nitrobenzene via robustly stable chalcogen stabilised iron carbonyl clusters (Fe3E2(CO)9, E = S, Se, Te)

Highly stable and thermally robust iron chalcogenide carbonyl clusters Fe₃E₂(CO)₉ (E = S, Se or Te) have been explored for the reduction of nitrobenzene. A 15 min thermal heating of an aqueous solution of nitrobenzene and hydrazine hydrate in the catalytic presence of Fe₃E₂(CO)₉ (E = S, Se or Te) clusters yield average to excellent aniline transformations. Among the S, Se and Te based iron chalcogenised carbonyl clusters, the diselenide cluster was found to be most efficient and produce almost 90% yield of the desired amino product, the disulfide cluster was also found to be significantly active, produce the 85% yield of amino product, while the ditelluride cluster was not found to be active and produced only 49% yield of the desired product. The catalyst can be reused up to three catalytic cycles and it needs to be dried in an oven for one hour prior to reuse for the best results. The developed method is inexpensive, environmentally benign, does not require any precious metal or a high pressure of toxic CO gas and exclusively brings the selective reduction of the nitro group under feasible and inert free conditions.

In this study, a strongly feasible method for the reduction of nitrobenzene has been developed through highly stable and thermally robust iron chalcogenide carbonyl clusters Fe₃E₂(CO)₉ (E = S, Se or Te).

Synthesis of benzimidazolones via CO2 fixation and N-phenyl formamides using formic acid in presence of zinc embedded polymer complex

A merrifield supported heterogeneous zinc catalyst [Zn(Meri-Ald-Py)] was synthesized and applied for benzimidazolone synthesis through the fixation of carbon dioxide (CO₂) and for different N-formylated products synthesis under mild reaction conditions.

On the catalytic transfer hydrogenation of nitroarenes by a cubane-type Mo3S4 cluster hydride: disentangling the nature of the reaction mechanism

Cubane-type Mo₃S₄ cluster hydrides decorated with phosphine ligands are active catalysts for the transfer hydrogenation of nitroarenes to aniline derivatives in the presence of formic acid (HCOOH) and triethylamine (Et₃N). The process is highly selective and most of the cluster species involved in the catalytic cycle have been identified through reaction monitoring. Formation of a dihydrogen cluster intermediate has also been postulated based on previous kinetic and theoretical studies. However, the different steps involved in the transfer hydrogenation from the cluster to the nitroarene to finally produce aniline remain unclear. Herein, we report an in-depth computational investigation into this mechanism. Et₃N reduces the activation barrier associated with the formation of Mo-HHOOCH dihydrogen species. The global catalytic process is highly exergonic and occurs in three consecutive steps with nitrosobenzene and N-phenylhydroxylamine as reaction intermediates. Our computational findings explain how hydrogen is transferred from these Mo-HHOOCH dihydrogen adducts to nitrobenzene with the concomitant formation of nitrosobenzene and the formate substituted cluster. Then, a β-hydride elimination reaction accompanied by CO₂ release regenerates the cluster hydride. Two additional steps are needed for hydrogen transfer from the dihydrogen cluster to nitrosobenzene and N-phenylhydroxylamine to finally produce aniline. Our results show that the three metal centres in the Mo₃S₄ unit act independently, so the cluster can exist in up to ten different forms that are capable of opening a wide range of reaction paths. This behaviour reveals the outstanding catalytic possibilities of this kind of cluster complexes, which work as highly efficient catalytic machines.

Synthesis of [Mo3S4] Clusters from Half-Sandwich Molybdenum(V) Chlorides and Their Application as Platforms for [Mo3S4Fe] Cubes

Triangular [Mo₃S₄] clusters are known to serve as platforms to accommodate a metal atom M, furnishing cubic [Mo₃S₄M] clusters. In this study, three [Mo₃S₄] clusters supported by η⁵-cyclopentadienyl (Cp^R) ligands, [Cp^R₃Mo₃S₄]⁺ (Cp^R = C₅Me₄SiMe₃, C₅Me₄SiEt₃, and C₅Me₄H), were synthesized via half-sandwich molybdenum chlorides Cp^RMoCl₄. In the cyclic voltammogram of the [Mo₃S₄] cluster having C₅Me₄H ligands, a weak feature appeared in addition to the [Cp^R₃Mo₃S₄]^0/- redox process, indicating the interaction between [Cp^R₃Mo₃S₄]^- and the [NⁿBu₄] cation of the electrolyte, while such a feature was less significant for the C₅Me₄SiR₃ variants. The [Mo₃S₄] clusters with bulky C₅Me₄SiR₃ ligands were successfully applied as platforms to accommodate an Fe atom to furnish cubic [Mo₃S₄Fe] clusters. On the other hand, the corresponding reactions of the less bulky C₅Me₄H analogue gave complex mixtures.

Biomass Sucrose-Derived Cobalt@Nitrogen-Doped Carbon for Catalytic Transfer Hydrogenation of Nitroarenes with Formic Acid

Fabrication of non-noble metal-based heterogeneous catalysts by a facile and cost-effective strategy for ecofriendly catalytic transfer hydrogenation (CTH) is of great significance for organic transformations. A cobalt@nitrogen-doped carbon (Co@NC) catalyst was prepared from renewable biomass-derived sucrose, harmless melamine, and earth-abundant Co(AcO)₂ as the precursor materials by hydrothermal treatment and carbonization. Co nanoparticles (NPs) were coated with NC shells and uniformly embedded in the NC framework. The as-obtained Co@NC-600 (carbonized at 600 °C) catalyst exhibited excellent catalytic efficiency for CTH of various functionalized nitroarenes with formic acid (FA) as hydrogen donor in aqueous solution. The uniformly incorporated N atoms in the C matrix and the encapsulated Co NPs showed synergistic effects in the CTH reactions. A mechanistic analysis indicated that the protons from FA were activated by Co sites after being captured by N atoms, and then reacted with nitroarenes adsorbed on the surface of the catalysts to generate the corresponding aromatic amines. Moreover, the catalyst showed excellent durability and reusability without obvious decrease in activity even after five reaction cycles. Thus, the study reported herein provides a cost-effective, sustainable strategy for fabrication of biomass-derived non-noble metal-based catalysts for green and efficient catalytic transformations.

Amorphous Flowerlike Goethite FeOOH Hierarchical Supraparticles: Superior Capability for Catalytic Hydrogenation of Nitroaromatics in Water

Fabrication of anilines from the corresponding nitroaromatics is a hot topic both for academia and for industry; however, conducting this protocol in water over a noble-metal-free catalytic system is still a great challenge. Continuous efforts are being made on exploiting novel catalysts for this transformation. In this work, we developed a scalable method for synthesizing the uniform flowerlike amorphous α-FeOOH hierarchical supraparticles. The well-defined amorphous α-FeOOH was prepared through an environmentally benign method, which is hydrolysis of the self-assembled iron glycolate at room temperature. Compared with other iron-only catalysts, this flowerlike amorphous α-FeOOH hierarchical supraparticle catalyst exhibits the best performance in the catalytic reduction of nitroaromatics to corresponding anilines by using water as the reaction solvent (turn over frequency is 106 h^-1 for 4-nitrophenol in water). The further results indicated that the amorphous structure, special nanostructures, and adsorption-desorption synergy offered excellent activity. The kinetics study shows that the reduction of 4-nitrophenol is first order for α-FeOOH, and the apparent active energy E_a is 75.9 kJ mol^-1. Furthermore, this catalyst can be used for eight times without obvious catalytic activity loss. We believe that this novel flowerlike amorphous α-FeOOH hierarchical supraparticle catalyst is a milestone in the reduction of nitro compounds.

Investigation of electronic structure of tri- and tetranuclear molybdenum clusters by X-ray photoelectron and emission spectroscopies and quantum chemical methods

Charge state studies of compounds [Mo₃S₄(tu)₈(H₂O)]Cl₄·4H₂O (1), [Mo₃S₄Cl₃(dbbpy)₃]Cl·5H₂O (2), [Mo₃S₄(CuCl)Cl₃(dbbpy)₃][CuCl₂] (3), containing {Mo₃S₄}⁴⁺ and {Mo₃CuS₄}⁵⁺ cluster cores bearing terminal thiourea (tu) or 4,4'-di-tert-butyl-2,2'-bipyridine (dbbpy) ligands, have been performed by X-ray photoelectron and X-ray emission spectroscopies combined with quantum chemical calculations. The best agreement between theory and experiments has been obtained using the B3LYP method. According to the experimental and calculated data, the Mo atoms are in the oxidation state 4+ for all compounds. The energies and shapes of the Cu2p lines indicate formal oxidation states of Cu as 1+. The coordination of Сu(I) to the cluster {Mo₃S₄} in 3 does not lead to significant changes in the charge state of the molybdenum atoms and the {Mo₃S₄} unit can be considered as a tridentate metallothia crown ether.

Hemilability of phosphine-thioether ligands coordinated to trinuclear Mo3S4 cluster and its effect on hydrogenation catalysis

Phosphine-thioether ligands were coordinated to the Mo₃S₄ cluster to afford [Mo₃S₄Cl₃(PS)₃]⁺ complexes. Their catalytic activity in nitrobenzene reduction reflects the different hemilabile behaviours of PS1, PS2 and PS3.

Nitrogen-doped graphene-activated metallic nanoparticle-incorporated ordered mesoporous carbon nanocomposites for the hydrogenation of nitroarenes

Herein, nanoscale metallic nanoparticle-incorporated ordered mesoporous carbon catalysts activated by nitrogen-doped graphene (NGr) were fabricated via an efficient multi-component co-assembly of a phenolic resin, nitrate, acetylacetone, the nitrogen-containing compound 1,10-phenanthroline, and Pluronic F127, followed by carbonization. The obtained well-dispersed nitrogen-doped graphene-activated transition metal nanocatalysts possess a 2-D hexagonally arranged pore structure with a high surface area (∼500 m² g⁻¹) and uniform pore size (∼4.0 nm) and show excellent activity for the selective hydrogenation–reduction of substituted nitroarenes to anilines in an environmentally friendly aqueous solution. The high catalytic performance and durability is attributed to the synergistic effects among the components, the unique structure of the nitrogen-doped graphene layer-coated metallic nanoparticles, and electronic activation of the doped nitrogen.

The non-noble M/NGr@OMC-T catalyst exhibits excellent catalytic activity and chemoselectivity for the hydrogenation of nitroarenes to anilines in water with hydrogen.
