Synthesis and Application of Water-Soluble NHC Transition-Metal Complexes

Carbene-coated metal nanoparticles for in vivo applications

N-Heterocyclic carbenes (NHC) are well-recognized ligands of choice for preparing robust transition metal species. However, their use for fabrication of biomedically relevant nanoparticles has been limited to the synthesis of non-targeted particles showing increased tolerance to different aqueous coagulants. In this work, the first example of carbene-coated metal nanoparticles suitable for in vivo applications is presented. Directed design of a novel biscarbene NHC ligand allowed to prepare the first magnetite/gold (Fe3O4@AuNP@NHC) nanostructures and carbene gold (AuNP@NHC) nanoparticles with significant stability in aqueous solutions and enhanced ability to form bioconjugates. Furthermore, these nanoparticles exhibit an extraordinary property for inorganic nanoparticles: they can endure several additive-free air drying/redispersion cycles without deterioration of their colloidal behavior. Bioconjugated AuNP@NHC and multimodal Fe3O4@AuNP@NHC demonstrated a successful performance in three distinct applications: lateral flow tests, specific cancer cell targeting, and bioimaging. Thus, the results show the notable advantages of the N-heterocyclic carbene coating of inorganic nanoparticles and their utility for complex biomedical applications.

Vitamin B1-based thiazol-2-ylidene-Ru(II) complexes: recyclable transfer hydrogenation catalysts in water

The [(p-cymene)RuCl(κ2C,N-{CNHC-NH})]+X- (CNHC = thiazol-2-ylidene) complexes with a bidentate ligand (2: X = Cl and 3: X = PF6) were prepared by a one-pot reaction of vitamin B1 (VB1, 1), Ag2O and [(p-cymene)RuCl2]2. In the complexes, VB1 coordinates through C2 and the exocyclic N in the imino form with the κ2-(C,N) coordination mode. The complexes 2 and 3 are stable in the solid state, but slowly release p-cymene in solution. Furthermore, upon heating in polar solvents, 2 or 3 can be converted by ligand exchange reactions to produce [(L)3RuCl(κ2C,N-{CNHC-NH})]+PF6- (4: L = py).Robustness was improved remarkably for 4. The complex 4 is stable in the solid state and in solution. The complexes 2-4 have been identified by 1H and 13C{1H} 2D NMR spectroscopy and 2 and 4 were studied by X-ray crystallography. In an effort to develop a recyclable catalyst in water, 2-4 were evaluated for TH of ketones and aldehydes with an azeotropic mixture of HCOOH/Et3N in water. The complexes 3 and 4 exhibited very good catalytic activity and 4 could be reused nine times without significant loss of activity, giving a high turnover frequency (TOF50%(h-1) = 1286).

Mechanism of Action of Antitumor Au(I) N-Heterocyclic Carbene Complexes: A Computational Insight on the Targeting of TrxR Selenocysteine

The targeting of human thioredoxin reductase is widely recognized to be crucially involved in the anticancer properties of several metallodrugs, including Au(I) complexes. In this study, the mechanism of reaction between a set of five N-heterocyclic carbene Au(I) complexes and models of the active Sec residue in human thioredoxin reductase was investigated by means of density functional theory approaches. The study was specifically addressed to the kinetics and thermodynamics of the tiled process by aiming at elucidating and explaining the differential inhibitory potency in this set of analogous Au(I) bis-carbene complexes. While the calculated free energy profile showed a substantially similar reactivity, we found that the binding of these Au(I) bis-carbene at the active CysSec dyad in the TrxR enzyme could be subjected to steric and orientational restraints, underlining both the approach of the bis-carbene scaffold and the attack of the selenol group at the metal center. A new and detailed mechanistic insight to the anticancer activity of these Au(I) organometallic complexes was thus provided by consolidating the TrxR targeting paradigm.

Divergent Synthesis of Chelating Aziridines and Cyclic(Alkyl)(Amino)Carbenes (CAACs) from Pyridyl-Tethered Robust Azomethine Ylides

Azomethine ylides are typically in situ generated synthons for making N-heterocycles through cycloaddition reactions. But an offbeat aspect about them is the isomeric nature of aldiminium-based azomethine ylides and (alkyl/aryl)(amino)carbenes, interconvertible by a formal 1,3-H+ transfer. Herein, two thermally robust azomethine ylides with a N-appended picolyl sidearm are isolated, which cyclize to py aziridines at 80 °C but unprecedentedly result N-pico CAAC-CuCl (CAAC=cyclic(alkyl)(amino)carbene) complexes when heated with CuCl at merely 60 °C. The pendant Npy , as revealed by computational analysis, plays a crucial role in this unusual 1,3-H+ shift using a deprotonation-protonation sequence, as well as in placing the CuCl at the carbenic site in tandem. The softer nature of Cu(I) is also critical. Chelating CAACs are rare and one with a N-tethered additional donor is priorly unknown. Both N-pico CAAC and py aziridine are bidentate chelators giving highly active cationic Rh(I) catalysts for hydrosilylating unactivated olefins by Et3 SiH. Notably, the py aziridine-Rh(I) is superior than the N-pico CAAC-Rh(I) catalyst.

1,3-Imidazole-Based Mesoionic Carbenes and Anionic Dicarbenes: Pushing the Limit of Classical N-Heterocyclic Carbenes

Classical N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) featuring the carbene center at the C2-position of 1,3-imidazole framework (i.e. C2-carbenes) are well acknowledged as very versatile neutral ligands in molecular as well as in materials sciences. The efficiency and success of NHCs in diverse areas is essentially attributed to their persuasive stereoelectronics, in particular the potent σ-donor property. The NHCs with the carbene center at the unusual C4 (or C5) position, the so-called abnormal NHCs (aNHCs) or mesoionic carbenes (iMICs), are however superior σ-donors than C2-carbenes. Hence, iMICs have substantial potential in sustainable synthesis and catalysis. The main obstacle in this direction is rather demanding synthetic accessibility of iMICs. The aim of this review article is to highlight recent advances, particularly by the author's research group, in accessing stable iMICs, quantifying their properties, and exploring their applications in synthesis and catalysis. In addition, the synthetic viability and use of vicinal C4,C5-anionic dicarbenes (ADCs), also based on an 1,3-imidazole framework, are presented. As will be apparent on following pages, iMICs and ADCs hold potentials in pushing the limit of classical NHCs by enabling access to conceptually new main-group heterocycles, radicals, molecular catalysts, ligands sets, and more.

Emerging Trends in Cross-Coupling: Twelve-Electron-Based L1Pd(0) Catalysts, Their Mechanism of Action, and Selected Applications

Monoligated palladium(0) species, L₁Pd(0), have emerged as the most active catalytic species in the cross-coupling cycle. Today, there are methods available to generate the highly active but unstable L₁Pd(0) catalysts from stable precatalysts. While the size of the ligand plays an important role in the formation of L₁Pd(0) during in situ catalysis, the latter can be precisely generated from the precatalyst by various technologies. Computational, kinetic, and experimental studies indicate that all three steps in the catalytic cycle─oxidative addition, transmetalation, and reductive elimination─contain monoligated Pd. The synthesis of precatalysts, their mode of activation, application studies in model systems, as well as in industry are discussed. Ligand parametrization and AI based data science can potentially help predict the facile formation of L₁Pd(0) species.

Towards new coordination modes of 1,2,3-triazolylidene: controlled by the nature of the 1st metalation in a heteroditopic bis-NHC ligand

An unusual effect of the nature of the first metal coordination of a heteroditopic N-heterocyclic carbene ligand (L2) towards the coordination behavior of 1,2,3-tzNHC is explored. The first metal coordination at the ImNHC site (complexes 3 and 4) was noted to substantially influence the electronics of the 1,2,3-triazolium moiety leading to an unprecedented chemistry of this MIC donor. Along this line, the Rh^III/Ir^III-orthometalation in complexes 4 makes the triazolium C₄-H more downfield shifted than C₅-H, whereas a reverse trend, although to a lesser extent, is observed in the case of the non-chelated Pd^II-coordination. This difference in behavior assisted us to achieve the selective activation of triazole C₄/C₅ positions, not observed before, as supported by the isolation of the homo- and hetero-bimetallic complexes, 5, 6 and 7-9via C₅- and C₄-metalation, respectively. Furthermore, the %V _bur calculations eliminate any considerable steric influence and the DFT studies strongly support the selectivity observed during bimetalation.

Bottom-up Synthesis of Water-Soluble Gold Nanoparticles Stabilized by N-Heterocyclic Carbenes: From Structural Characterization to Applications

N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) have become attractive ligands for functionalizing gold nanoparticle surfaces with applications ranging from catalysis to biomedicine. Despite their great potential, NHC stabilized gold colloids (NHC@AuNPs) are still scarcely explored and further efforts should be conducted to improve their design and functionalization. Here, the 'bottom-up' synthesis of two water-soluble gold nanoparticles (AuNP-1 and AuNP-2) stabilized by hydrophilic mono- and bidentate NHC ligands is reported together with their characterization by various spectroscopic and analytical methods. The NPs showed key differences likely to be due to the selected NHC ligand systems. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images showed small quasi-spherical and faceted NHC@AuNPs of similar particle size (ca. 2.3-2.6 nm) and narrow particle size distribution, but the colloids featured different ratios of Au(I)/Au(0) by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Furthermore, the NHC@AuNPs were supported on titania and fully characterized. The new NPs were studied for their catalytic activity towards the reduction of nitrophenol substrates, the reduction of resazurin and for their photothermal efficiency. Initial results on their application in photothermal therapy (PTT) were obtained in human cancer cells in vitro. The aforementioned reactions represent important model reactions towards wastewater remediation, bioorthogonal transformations and cancer treatment.

Aqueous Suzuki couplings mediated by a hydrophobic catalyst

The catalytic activity of [(Ph₂P-o-C₆H₄)₂N]PdCl in aerobic aqueous Suzuki couplings is described. Though hydrophobic, this molecular catalyst is competent in cross-coupling reactions of arylboronic acids with a variety of electronically activated, unactivated, and deactivated aryl iodides, bromides, and chlorides upon heating in aqueous solutions under aerobic conditions to give biphenyl derivatives without the necessity of amphiphiles even in the presence of an excess amount of mercury.

Deconstructive isomerization of azetidinols via C-C bond cleavage enabled by N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) catalysis

Herein, we describe an N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-catalyzed deconstructive isomerization of azetidinols via an inert C-C bond cleavage. It provides a direct and supplementary pathway to access α-amino ketone and oxazol-2-one derivatives in moderate to good yields. DFT calculation supports the proposed mechanism in which NHC undergoes a concerted proton transfer and ring-opening process. This reaction features non-metal catalysis, simple reaction operation, excellent regioselectivity and gram-scale synthesis.

Chirality influence on the cytotoxic properties of anionic chiral bis(N-heterocyclic carbene)silver complexes

Complexes Na₃[Ag(NHC^R)₂], 2a-e and 2b'-c', where NHC^R is a N-heterocyclic carbene of the 2,2'-(1H-2λ³,3λ⁴-imidazole-1,3-diyl)dicarboxylate type, were prepared by treatment of compounds HL^R, 1a-e and 1b'-c' (2-(1-(carboxyalkyl)-1H-imidazol-3-ium-3-yl)carboxylate), with silver oxide in the presence of aqueous sodium hydroxide. They were characterized by analytical, spectroscopic (infrared, IR, ¹H and ¹³C nuclear magnetic resonance, NMR, and circular dichroism) and X-ray methods (2a). In the solid state, the anionic part of complex 2a, [Ag(NHC^H)₂]^3-, shows a linear disposition of C_carbene-Ag-C_carbene atoms and an eclipsed conformation of the two NHC ligands. The proposed bis(NHC) nature of the silver complexes was maintained in solution according to NMR and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The cytotoxic activity of compounds 2 was evaluated against four cancer cell lines and one non-cancerous cell line and several structure-activity correlations were found for these complexes. For instance, the activity decreased when the bulkiness of the R alkyl group in Na₃[Ag(NHC^R)₂] increased. More interesting is the detected chirality-anticancer relationship, where complexes Na₃[Ag{(S,S)-NHC^R}₂] (R = Me, 2b; ⁱPr, 2c) showed better anticancer activity than those of their enantiomeric derivatives Na₃[Ag{(R,R)-NHC^R}₂] (R = Me, 2b'; ⁱPr, 2c').

Galactopyranoside-Substituted N-Heterocyclic Carbene Gold(I) Complexes: Synthesis, Stability, and Catalytic Applications to Alkyne Hydration

A series of novel gold(I) complexes bearing galactopyranoside-based N-heterocyclic carbene ligands have been synthesized via transmetalation of the corresponding Ag(I) complex. Gold(I) complexes have been characterized by NMR, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), and elemental analysis. An exhaustive NMR analysis shows that the complexes are not stable when hydroxyl groups are deprotected. Catalytic studies, using the alkyne hydration as a model reaction, indicate that the synthesized complexes are active and reusable.

A Fluoroponytailed NHC–Silver Complex Formed from Vinyl-imidazolium/AgNO3 under Aqueous–Ammoniacal Conditions

3-(1H,1H,2H,2H-Perfluorooctyl)-1-vinylimidazolium chloride [2126844–17–3], a strong fluorosurfactant with remarkably high solubility in water, was expediently converted into the respective doubly NHC-complexed silver salt with nitrate as counter ion in quantitative yield. Due to its vinyl substituents, [bis(3-(1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorooctyl)-1-vinylimidazol-2-ylidene)silver(I)] nitrate, Ag(FNHC)2NO3, represents a polymerizable N-heterocyclic carbene transfer reagent, thus potentially offering simple and robust access to coordination polymers with crosslinking metal bridges. The compound was characterized by infrared and NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry as well as elemental analysis, and supplemented by X-ray single-crystal structure determination. It crystallizes in the monoclinic crystal system in the space group P21/c. With 173.3°, the geometry of the Ag-carbene bridge deviates slightly from linearity. The disordered perfluoroalkyl side chains exhibit a helical conformation.

Enhancement of the Water Affinity of Histidine by Zinc and Copper Ions

Histidine (His) is widely involved in the structure and function of biomolecules. Transition-metal ions, such as Zn²⁺ and Cu²⁺, widely exist in biological environments, and they are crucial to many life-sustaining physiological processes. Herein, by employing density function calculations, we theoretically show that the water affinity of His can be enhanced by the strong cation–π interaction between His and Zn²⁺ and Cu²⁺. Further, the solubility of His is experimentally demonstrated to be greatly enhanced in ZnCl₂ and CuCl₂ solutions. The existence of cation–π interaction is demonstrated by fluorescence, ultraviolet (UV) spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments. These findings are of great importance for the bioavailability of aromatic drugs and provide new insight for understanding the physiological functions of transition metal ions.

N-Heterocyclic Carbene Iron Complexes as Anticancer Agents: In Vitro and In Vivo Biological Studies

Cisplatin and its derivatives are commonly used in chemotherapeutic treatments of cancer, even though they suffer from many toxic side effects. The problems that emerge from the use of these metal compounds led to the search for new complexes capable to overcome the toxic side effects. Here, we report the evaluation of the antiproliferative activity of Fe(II) cyclopentadienyl complexes bearing n-heterocyclic carbene ligands in tumour cells and their in vivo toxicological profile. The in vitro antiproliferative assays demonstrated that complex Fe1 displays the highest cytotoxic activity both in human colorectal carcinoma cells (HCT116) and ovarian carcinoma cells (A2780) with IC₅₀ values in the low micromolar range. The antiproliferative effect of Fe1 was even higher than cisplatin. Interestingly, Fe1 showed low in vivo toxicity, and in vivo analyses of Fe1 and Fe2 compounds using colorectal HCT116 zebrafish xenograft showed that both reduce the proliferation of human HCT116 colorectal cancer cells in vivo.

N-heterocyclic carbene metal complexes as therapeutic agents: a patent review

INTRODUCTION

Besides the well-established catalytic, synthetic and materials related applications of N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) metal complexes, their use as therapeutics deserves a special attention. Many literature reports indicate that their bioactivity is superior to other organometallic compounds. The main focus of patent disclosures in this area is the elucidation of anticancer and antimicrobial activities of NHC transition metal complexes. Nonetheless, a variety of other biological activities have been reported in non-patent literature to date.

AREA COVERED

Patent literature on NHC metal complexes with focus on their therapeutic applications and relationship structure-biological activity disclosed since the first issued patent (2010) up to now (2021). The information was collected from publicly available data sources (e.g. Chemical Abstracts, MedLine, Reaxys, and SciFinder).

EXPERT OPINION

Although the first reports on biological applications of NHC metal complexes originate in 2000s, the greatest progress in this area was made only in the past decade. A growing number of patent disclosures indicates that structural design of new NHC metal complexes is crucial for their successful use in both medicine and biochemistry. In the next few years, we expect to see more stable and effective NHC metal complexes as potential therapeutic agents and perhaps in clinical trials.

NHC-catalyzed Truce-Smiles rearrangement of N-aryl methacrylamides for the synthesis of trans-cinnamides

Herein we describe a NHC-catalyzed Truce-Smiles rearrangement of N-aryl methacrylamides which enables the cleavage of an inert aryl C-N bond. A range of trans-cinnamides could be obtained by the direct construction of a C(aryl)-C(alkenyl) bond and functional groups such as Br, Cl, CN, and pyridinyl are compatible with NHC catalysis. The reaction features high atom-economy, transition-metal free catalysis, and easily available substrates.

Guided Antitumoural Drugs: (Imidazol-2-ylidene)(L)gold(I) Complexes Seeking Cellular Targets Controlled by the Nature of Ligand L

Three [1,3-diethyl-4-(p-methoxyphenyl)-5-(3,4,5-trimethoxyphenyl)imidazol-2-ylidene](L)gold(I) complexes, 4 a (L=Cl), 5 a (L=PPh3 ), and 6 a (L=same N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)), and their fluorescent [4-(anthracen-9-yl)-1,3-diethyl-5-phenylimidazol-2-ylidene](L)gold(I) analogues, 4 b, 5 b, and 6 b, respectively, were studied for their localisation and effects in cancer cells. Despite their identical NHC ligands, the last three accumulated in different compartments of melanoma cells, namely, the nucleus (4 b), mitochondria (5 b), or lysosomes (6 b). Ligand L was also more decisive for the site of accumulation than the NHC ligand because the couples 4 a/4 b, 5 a/5 b, and 6 a/6 b, carrying different NHC ligands, afforded similar results in cytotoxicity tests, and tests on targets typically found at their sites of accumulation, such as DNA in nuclei, reactive oxygen species and thioredoxin reductase in mitochondria, and lysosomal membranes. Regardless of the site of accumulation, cancer cell apoptosis was eventually induced. The concept of guiding a bioactive complex fragment to a particular subcellular target by secondary ligand L could reduce unwanted side effects.

N-Heterocyclic carbene-carbodiimide (NHC-CDI) betaine adducts: synthesis, characterization, properties, and applications

N-Heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) are an important class of reactive organic molecules used as ligands, organocatalysts, and σ-donors in a variety of electroneutral ylide or betaine adducts with main-group compounds. An emerging class of betaine adducts made from the reaction of NHCs with carbodiimides (CDIs) form zwitterionic amidinate-like structures with tunable properties based on the highly modular NHC and CDI scaffolds. The adduct stability is controlled by the substituents on the CDI nitrogens, while the NHC substituents greatly affect the configuration of the adduct in the solid state. This Perspective is intended as a primer to these adducts, touching on their history, synthesis, characterization, and general properties. Despite the infancy of the field, NHC-CDI adducts have been applied as amidinate-type ligands for transition metals and nanoparticles, as junctions in zwitterionic polymers, and to stabilize distonic radical cations. These applications and potential future directions are discussed.

New poly-imidazolium–triazole particles by CuAAC cross-linking of calix[4]arene bis-azide/alkyne amphiphiles – a prospective support for Pd in the Mizoroki–Heck reaction

A new imidazolium amphiphilic calix[4]arene with terminal acetylene fragments in the polar region was synthesized according to a two step scheme including regioselective chloromethylation of distal di-O-butyl calix[4]arene and subsequent interaction with 1-(hex-5-yn-1-yl)-1H-imidazole. The aggregation properties (CAC, the size and zeta potential of aggregates) of alkynyl calix[4]arene as well as of previously synthesized azidopropyl calix[4]arene and their 1 : 1 mixture were disclosed. Macrocycles with azide and alkyne fragments in the polar region were covalently cross-linked under CuAAC conditions in water. Successful cross-linking of molecules has been proven by IR spectroscopy and MALDI-TOF spectrometry. The obtained polymeric particles were studied both in solution and the solid state and the presence of submicron (∼200 nm) and micron (∼1–5 μm) particles with the prevalence of the latter was found. The average molecular weight of the polymer according to the static light scattering data was found to be 639 ± 44 kDa. The obtained polymeric imidazolium–triazole particles were tested as a support for Pd(OAc)₂ in the Mizoroki–Heck reaction carried out in both organic and water media. In both solvents (especially in water) the addition of imidazolium–triazole particles to Pd(OAc)₂ increased the conversion of 4-iodanisole. It was found that the ratio between the products (1,1 and 1,2-substituted ethylenes) changes drastically on going from DMF to water from 1 : 5 to 1 : 40 when using supported Pd(OAc)₂.

A new supramolecular approach to the formation of polytriazole–imidazolium particles, promising supports for catalysis, based on self-assembly of amphiphilic bis-azides and bis alkynes and their linkage using CuAAC is presented.

A PEGylated N-heterocyclic carbene-gold(i) complex: an efficient catalyst for cyclization reaction in water

A recyclable, PEGylated N-heterocyclic carbene(NHC)–gold(i) catalyst was synthesized, which exhibited high reactivity and regio-selectivity in the cyclization of alkynoic acids and cascade reaction of tryptamine and alkynoic acids in water.

Redox Isomerization of Allylic Alcohols Catalyzed by New Water-Soluble Rh(I)-N-Heterocyclic Carbene Complexes

New water-soluble, N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) or mixed NHC/tertiary phosphine complexes [RhCl(cod)(sSIMes)], Na2[Rh(bmim)(cod)(mtppts)], and [Rh(bmim)(cod)(pta)]BF4 were synthetized and applied for the first time as catalysts in redox isomerization of allylic alcohols in aqueous media. [RhCl(cod)(sSIMes)] (with added sulfonated triphenylphosphine) and [Rh(bmim)(cod)(pta)]BF4 catalyzed selectively the transformation of allylic alcohols to the corresponding ketones. The highest catalytic activity, TOF = 152 h−1 (TOF = (mol reacted substrate) × (mol catalyst × time)−1) was observed in redox isomerization of hept-1-en-3-ol ([S]/[cat] = 100). The catalysts were reused in the aqueous phase at least three times, with only modest loss of the catalytic activity and selectivity.

From Molecules to Polymers-Harnessing Inter- and Intramolecular Interactions to Create Mechanochromic Materials

The development of mechanophores as building blocks that serve as predefined weak linkages has enabled the creation of mechanoresponsive and mechanochromic polymer materials, which are interesting for a range of applications including the study of biological specimens or advanced security features. In typical mechanophores, covalent bonds are broken when polymers that contain these chemical motifs are exposed to mechanical forces, and changes of the optical properties upon bond scission can be harnessed as a signal that enables the detection of applied mechanical stresses and strains. Similar chromic effects upon mechanical deformation of polymers can also be achieved without relying on the scission of covalent bonds. The dissociation of motifs that feature directional noncovalent interactions, the disruption of aggregated molecules, and conformational changes in molecules or polymers constitute an attractive element for the design of mechanoresponsive and mechanochromic materials. In this article, it is reviewed how such alterations of molecules and polymers can be exploited for the development of mechanochromic materials that signal deformation without breaking covalent bonds. Recent illustrative examples are highlighted that showcase how the use of such mechanoresponsive motifs enables the visual mapping of stresses and damage in a reversible and highly sensitive manner.

Organometallic Nanoparticles Ligated by NHCs: Synthesis, Surface Chemistry and Ligand Effects

Over the last 20 years, the use of metallic nanoparticles (MNPs) in catalysis has awakened a great interest in the scientific community, mainly due to the many advantages of this kind of nanostructures in catalytic applications. MNPs exhibit the characteristic stability of heterogeneous catalysts, but with a higher active surface area than conventional metallic materials. However, despite their higher activity, MNPs present a wide variety of active sites, which makes it difficult to control their selectivity in catalytic processes. An efficient way to modulate the activity/selectivity of MNPs is the use of coordinating ligands, which transforms the MNP surface, subsequently modifying the nanoparticle catalytic properties. In relation to this, the use of N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHC) as stabilizing ligands has demonstrated to be an effective tool to modify the size, stability, solubility and catalytic reactivity of MNPs. Although NHC-stabilized MNPs can be prepared by different synthetic methods, this review is centered on those prepared by an organometallic approach. Here, an organometallic precursor is decomposed under H2 in the presence of non-stoichiometric amounts of the corresponding NHC-ligand. The resulting organometallic nanoparticles present a clean surface, which makes them perfect candidates for catalytic applications and surface studies. In short, this revision study emphasizes the great versatility of NHC ligands as MNP stabilizers, as well as their influence on catalysis.

Syntheses and Reactivity of New Zwitterionic Imidazolium Trihydridoborate and Triphenylborate Species

In this study, four new N-(alkyl/aryl)imidazolium-borates were prepared, and their deprotonation reactions were investigated. Addition of BH₃•THF to N-benzylimidazoles and N-mesitylimidazoles leads to imidazolium-trihydridoborate adducts. Ammonium tetraphenylborate reacts with benzyl- or mesityl-imidazoles with the loss of one of the phenyl groups yielding the corresponding imidazolium-triphenylborates. Their authenticity was confirmed by CHN analysis, ¹H-NMR, ¹³C-NMR, ¹¹B-NMR, FT-IR spectroscopy, and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS). 3-Benzyl-imidazolium-1-yl)trihydridoborate, (HIm^Bn)BH₃, and (3-mesityl-imidazolium-1-yl)trihydridoborate, (HIm^Mes)BH₃, were also characterized by X-ray crystallography. The reactivity of these new compounds as carbene precursors in an effort to obtain borate-NHC complexes was investigated and a new carbene-borate adduct (which dimerizes) was obtained via a microwave-assisted procedure.

Electronic Finetuning of a Bio-inspired Iron(II) tetra-NHC Complex by trans Axial Isocyanide Substitution

The synthesis of trans axially substituted mono- (1 a) and bis(tert-butylisocyanide) (1 b) derivatives of the highly active homogeneous bio-inspired iron(II) olefin epoxidation (pre-)catalyst 1 bearing an equatorial macrocyclic tetra N-heterocyclic carbene and two trans axial labile acetonitrile ligands is reported. NMR spectroscopy and SC-XRD indicate a considerable π-backdonation from the iron(II) centres to the isocyanide ligand(s). The impact of isocyanide substitution on the electronic features of the complexes is studied by cyclic voltammetry revealing a significant increase in half-cell potential assignable to the reversible Fe(II)/Fe(III) redox couple with an increasing number of isocyanides as a result of their π-accepting properties: E1/2 =0.15 V (1), E1/2 =0.35 V (1 a), E1/2 =0.44 V (1 b).
