π-Stacked Oligo(phenylene vinylene)s Based on Pseudo-Geminal Substituted [2.2]Paracyclophanes: Impact of Interchain Geometry and Interactions on the Electronic Properties

A microporous polymer based on nonconjugated hindered biphenyls that emits blue light

Microporous organic polymers that have three-dimensional connectivity stemming from monomers with tetrahedral or tetrahedron-like geometry can have high surface areas and strong fluorescence. There are however few examples of such polymers based on hindered biaryls, and their fluorescence has not been studied. Hypothesizing that the contortion in a hindered biphenyl moiety would modulate the optical properties of a polymer built from it, we synthesized a meta-enchained polyphenylene from a 2,2',6,6'-tetramethylbiphenyl-based monomer, in which the two phenyl rings are nearly mutually perpendicular. The polymer was microporous with SBET = 495 m2 g-1. The polymer absorbed near-UV light and emitted blue fluorescence despite the meta-enchainment that would have been expected to break the conjugation. A related copolymer, synthesized from 2,2',6,6'-tetramethylbiphenyl-based and unsubstituted biphenyl-based monomers, was microporous but not fluorescent.

In-situ electro-responsive through-space coupling enabling foldamers as volatile memory elements

Voltage-gated processing units are fundamental components for non-von Neumann architectures like memristor and electric synapses, on which nanoscale molecular electronics have possessed great potentials. Here, tailored foldamers with furan‒benzene stacking (f-Fu) and thiophene‒benzene stacking (f-Th) are designed to decipher electro-responsive through-space interaction, which achieve volatile memory behaviors via quantum interference switching in single-molecule junctions. f-Fu exhibits volatile turn-on feature while f-Th performs stochastic turn-off feature with low voltages as 0.2 V. The weakened orbital through-space mixing induced by electro-polarization dominates stacking malposition and quantum interference switching. f-Fu possesses higher switching probability and faster responsive time, while f-Th suffers incomplete switching and longer responsive time. High switching ratios of up to 91 for f-Fu is realized by electrochemical gating. These findings provide evidence and interpretation of the electro-responsiveness of non-covalent interaction at single-molecule level and offer design strategies of molecular non-von Neumann architectures like true random number generator.

Central-to-Folding Chirality Control: Asymmetric Synthesis of Multilayer 3D Targets With Electron-Deficient Bridges

New multilayer 3D chiral molecules have been designed and synthesized asymmetrically through the strategy of center-to-multilayer folding chirality control and double Suzuki couplings. Individual diastereoisomers were readily obtained and separated via flash column chromatography. The key diastereoisomer was further converted into corresponding enantiomers. These enantiomers possess electron-deficient aromatic bridges layered with top and bottom aromatic scaffolds. X-ray structural analysis has unambiguously confirmed the configuration, and intermolecular packing results in regular planar patterns in solid crystals. The synthesis was achieved in a total of ten steps starting from commercially available starting materials.

Multilayer 3D Chiral Folding Polymers and Their Asymmetric Catalytic Assembly

A novel class of polymers and oligomers of chiral folding chirality has been designed and synthesized, showing structurally compacted triple-column/multiple-layer frameworks. Both uniformed and differentiated aromatic chromophoric units were successfully constructed between naphthyl piers of this framework. Screening monomers, catalysts, and catalytic systems led to the success of asymmetric catalytic Suzuki-Miyaura polycouplings. Enantio- and diastereochemistry were unambiguously determined by X-ray structural analysis and concurrently by comparison with a similar asymmetric induction by the same catalyst in the asymmetric synthesis of a chiral three-layered product. The resulting chiral polymers exhibit intense fluorescence activity in a solid form and solution under specific wavelength irradiation.

Triple-Columned and Multiple-Layered 3D Polymers: Design, Synthesis, Aggregation-Induced Emission (AIE), and Computational Study

Conjugated polymers and oligomers have great potentials in various fields, especially in materials and biological sciences because of their intriguing electronic and optoelectronic properties. In recent years, the through-space conjugation system has emerged as a new assembled pattern of multidimensional polymers. Here, a novel series of structurally condensed multicolumn/multilayer 3D polymers and oligomers have been designed and synthesized through one-pot Suzuki polycondensation (SPC). The intramolecularly stacked arrangement of polymers can be supported by either X-ray structural analysis or computational analysis. In all cases, polymers were obtained with modest to good yields, as determined by GPC and ¹H-NMR. MALDI-TOF analysis has proven the speculation of the step-growth process of this polymerization. The computational study of ab initio and DFT calculations based on trimer and pentamer models gives details of the structures and the electronic transition. Experimental results of optical and AIE research confirmed by calculation indicates that the present work would facilitate the research and applications in materials.

Regioselective Functionalization of [2.2]Paracyclophanes: Recent Synthetic Progress and Perspectives

[2.2]Paracyclophane (PCP) is a prevalent scaffold that is widely utilized in asymmetric synthesis, π-stacked polymers, energy materials, and functional parylene coatings that finds broad applications in bio- and materials science. In the last few years, [2.2]paracyclophane chemistry has progressed tremendously, enabling the fine-tuning of its structural and functional properties. This Minireview highlights the most important recent synthetic developments in the selective functionalization of PCP that govern distinct features of planar chirality as well as chiroptical and optoelectronic properties. Special focus is given to the function-inspired design of [2.2]paracyclophane-based π-stacked conjugated materials by transition-metal-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions. Current synthetic challenges, limitations, as well as future research directions and new avenues for advancing cyclophane chemistry are also summarized.

Through-Space Conjugation: A Thriving Alternative for Optoelectronic Materials

Efficient electronic coupling is the key to constructing optoelectronic functional π systems. Generally, the delocalization of π electrons must comply with the framework constructed by covalent bonds (typically σ bonds), representing classic through-bond conjugation. However, through-space conjugation offers an alternative that achieves spatial electron communication with closely stacked π systems instead of covalent bonds thus enabling multidimensional energy and charge transport. Because of the ever-accelerating advances of through-space conjugation studies, researchers are inspired greatly by the beauty of through-space conjugated systems and their potential in high-tech applications. In this mini review, we introduce some representative and newly developed π systems having the through-space conjugation feature. In addition to discussing the profound impacts of through-space conjugation on the luminescence properties and charge transport, we will review some impressive findings of distinctive molecules with attractive characteristics, such as aggregation-induced emission, thermally activated delayed fluorescence, bipolar charge transport, and multichannel. These achievements may bring about new breakthroughs of theory, materials, and devices in the fields of organic electronics and molecular electronics.

Free-Radical Copolymerization of Dibenzofulvene with (Meth)acrylates Leading to π-Stacked Copolymers

Copolymerizations of dibenzofulvene (DBF) with methyl methacrylate (MMA), 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA), methyl acrylate (MA), and 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate (HEA) were conducted under free radical conditions in toluene using α,α'-azobisisobutylonitrile (AIBN) as the initiator. In the copolymerizations, DBF indicated much higher reactivity than the comonomers, and the products comprised mainly of DBF units. NMR, UV, and fluorescence spectra, as well as electrochemical features indicated that the copolymers possess both isolated and rather short, sequential (meth)acrylate units, as well as π-stacked and unstacked DBF sequences. Isolated (meth)acrylate units are proposed to be sandwiched between DBF units. The ratios of π-stacked and unstacked side-chain fluorene groups of DBF units in excited states were accurately determined on the basis of fluorescent emission spectra; DBF units are mostly π-stacked in excited states as disclosed by fluorescence spectra. Two types of π-stacked sequences were suggested to be present in the ground state by electrochemical analysis. The copolymers exhibited higher solubility than pure poly(DBF).

High Fluorescence Efficiencies and Large Stokes Shifts of Folded Fluorophores Consisting of a Pair of Alkenyl-Tethered, π-Stacked Oligo-p-phenylenes

A series of pure hydrocarbon fluorophores containing a pair of π-stacked oligo-p-phenylenes have been synthesized and analyzed by NMR and X-ray crystallography. They show good fluorescence in solutions and enhanced fluorescence in the aggregated state. Large Stokes shifts (up to 214 nm) have been achieved in these folded fluorophores in virtue of intramolecular energy transfer, and balanced structural rigidity and flexibility. These folded fluorophores provide perfect models for understanding the energy and charge transfer process in π-stacked systems.

Multichannel conductance of folded single-molecule wires aided by through-space conjugation

Deciphering charge transport through multichannel pathways in single-molecule junctions is of high importance to construct nanoscale electronic devices and deepen insight into biological redox processes. Herein, we report two tailor-made folded single-molecule wires featuring intramolecular π-π stacking interactions. The scanning tunneling microscope (STM) based break-junction technique and theoretical calculations show that through-bond and through-space conjugations are integrated into one single-molecule wire, allowing for two simultaneous conducting channels in a single-molecule junction. These folded molecules with stable π-π stacking interaction offer conceptual advances in single-molecule multichannel conductance, and are perfect models for conductance studies in biological systems, organic thin films, and π-stacked columnar aggregates.

Variation of formal hydrogen-bonding networks within electronically delocalized π-conjugated oligopeptide nanostructures

This photophysical study characterizes the generality of intermolecular electronic interactions present within nanomaterials derived from self-assembling oligopeptides with embedded π-conjugated oligophenylenevinylene (OPV) subunits stilbene and distyrylbenzene that in principle present two distinct β-sheet motifs. Two different synthetic approaches led to oligopeptides that upon self-assembly are expected to self-assemble into multimeric aggregates stabilized by β-sheet-like secondary structures. The target molecules express either two C-termini linked to the central OPV core (symmetric peptides) or the more common N-termini to C-termini polarity typical of natural oligopeptides (nonsymmetric peptides). Both peptide secondary structures were shown to form extended 1-D peptide aggregates with intimate intermolecular π-electron interactions. Differences in length of the π-conjugated OPV segments resulted in differing extents of intermolecular interactions and the resulting photophysics. The peptides containing the shorter stilbene (OPV2) units showed little ground state interactions and resulted in excimeric emission, while the longer distyrylbenzene (OPV3) peptides had different ground state interactions between adjacent π-conjugated subunits resulting in either perturbed electronic properties arising from exciton coupling or excimer-like excited states. Molecular dynamics simulations of nascent aggregate formation predict peptide dimerization to be a spontaneous process, possessing thermodynamic driving potentials in the range 2-6 kcal/mol for the four molecules considered. Antiparallel stacking of the peptides containing an OPV3 subunit is thermodynamically favored over the parallel orientation, whereas both arrangements are equally favored for the peptides containing an OPV2 subunit. This study validates the generality of peptide-π-peptide self-assembly to provide electronically delocalized supramolecular structures and suggests flexibility in peptide sequence design as a way to tune the material properties of π-conjugated supramolecular polymers.

Supramolecular polymorphism: tunable electronic interactions within π-conjugated peptide nanostructures dictated by primary amino acid sequence

We present a systematic study of the photophysical properties of one-dimensional electronically delocalized nanostructures assembled from π-conjugated subunits embedded within oligopeptide backbones. The nature of the excited states within these nanostructures is studied as a function of primary amino acid sequence utilizing steady-state and time-resolved spectroscopies, and their atomistic structure is probed by molecular simulation. Variations introduced into the amino acid side chains at specific residue locations along the molecular peptide backbone lead to pronounced changes in the observed photophysical behavior of the fibrillar structures (spanning H-like excitonic coupling and disordered excimeric coupling) that arise from subtle changes in the π-stacking within them. These results indicate that residue modification-in terms of relative size, solvation properties, and with respect to the distance from the central π-electron core-enables the ability to tune chromophore packing and the resulting photophysics of supramolecular assemblies of π-conjugated bioelectronic materials in a rational and systematic manner.
