Acceleration of xenon kick-out exchange in a cryptophane host explained by ab initio simulation

The degenerate exchange involving xenon and anti-cryptophane-222-(OCH2COOH)6 in basic water is studied. The reaction consists of the intrusion of a xenon atom into a cavity hosting another xenon and the escape of the latter from the cage to reach the aqueous solution. A series of constrained ab initio molecular dynamics simulations were performed according to the Blue Moon ensemble method to reconstruct the free-energy profile for the degenerate exchange reaction at ambient temperature. In addition to the estimation of the free-energy barrier height of the reaction, analysis of the trajectories provides details on its mechanism as well as on the nature of its transition state, where both Xe atoms interact through strong dispersion forces owing to moderate confinement effects.

Triphenylamine[3]arenes: Streamlining Synthesis of a Versatile Macrocyclic Platform for Supramolecular Architectures and Functionalities

Triphenylamine[3]arenes (TPA[3]s), featuring [16]paracyclophane backbone with alternating carbon and nitrogen bridging atoms, were synthesized through a BF3 ⋅ Et2O-catalyzed cyclization reaction using triphenylamine derivatized monomers and paraformaldehyde. This molecular design yielded a series of TPA[3] macrocycles with high efficiency, with their facile derivatizations also successfully demonstrated. On account of the strong electron-donating properties of the TPA moieties, these TPA[3]s exhibit remarkable delayed fluorescence, and possess a significant affinity for iodine. Furthermore, their inherent three-fold symmetry rendered TPA[3]s as novel building blocks for the construction of extended frameworks and molecular cages. This advancement expands the versatility of discrete macrocycles into complex architectures, enhancing their applicability across a broad spectrum of applications.

Self-Assembled Bis-Acridinium Tweezer Equilibria Controlled by Multi-Responsive Properties

Protonated and methylated bis-acridinium tweezers built around a 2,6-diphenylpyridyl and an electron enriched 2,6-di(p-anisyl)pyridyl spacer have been synthesized. These tweezers can self-assemble in their corresponding homodimers and the associated thermodynamic parameters have been probed in organic solvents. The switching properties of the tweezers have been exploited in biphasic transfer experiments showing the shift of the equilibria towards the homodimers. Moreover, the thermodynamic parameters of the formation of the reduced methylated homodimers investigated by electrochemical experiments revealed the dissociation of the dimers. Thus, in addition to solvent and temperature, the pH and redox responsiveness of the acridinium units of the tweezers make it possible to modulate to a larger extent the monomer-dimer equilibria.

Hierarchically Assembled Gigantic Fe/Co Cyanometallate Clusters Exhibiting Electron Transfer Behavior Above Room Temperature

The construction of large and complex supramolecular architectures through self-assembly is at the forefront of contemporary coordination chemistry. Notwithstanding great success in various systems using anionic bridges (e.g., O2- or S2-) or organic ligands (e.g., pyridine or carboxylate ligands), the assembly of large cyanide-bridged clusters with increasing nuclearity remains a formidable synthetic challenge. In this study, it is achieved in preparing two heterometallic cyanometallate clusters with unprecedented complexity, [Fe20Co20] (1) and [Fe12Co15] (2), by creating the "flexibility" through a versatile ligand of bis((1H-imidazol-4-yl)methylene)hydrazine (H2L) and low-coordinate cobalt. Complex 1 features a super-square array of four cyanide-bridged [Fe4Co4] cube subunits as the corners that are interconnected by four additional [FeCo] units, resulting in a torus-shaped architecture. Complex 2 contains a lantern-like core-shell cluster with a triple-helix kernel of [Co3L3] enveloped by a [Fe12Co12] shell. The combined structure analysis and mass spectrometry study reveal a hierarchical assembly mechanism, which sheds new light on constructing cyanometallate nanoclusters with atomic precision. Moreover, complex 1 undergoes a thermally induced electron-transfer-coupled spin transition (ETCST) between the diamagnetic {FeII LS(µ-CN)CoIII LS} and paramagnetic {FeIII LS(µ-CN)CoII HS} configurations (LS = low spin, HS = high spin) above room temperature, representing the largest molecule displaying electron transfer and spin transition characteristic.

Molecular and supramolecular adaptation by coupled stimuli

Adaptation transcends scale in both natural and artificial systems, but delineating the causative factors of this phenomenon requires urgent clarification. Herein, we unravel the molecular requirements for adaptation and establish a link to rationalize adaptive behavior on a self-assembled level. These concepts are established by analyzing a model compound exhibiting both light- and pH-responsive units, which enable the combined or independent application of different stimuli. On a molecular level, adaptation arises from coupled stimuli, as the final outcome of the system depends on their sequence of application. However, in a self-assembled state, a single stimulus suffices to induce adaptation as a result of collective molecular behavior and the reversibility of non-covalent interactions. Our findings go beyond state-of-the-art (multi)stimuli-responsive systems and allow us to draw up design guidelines for adaptive behavior both at the molecular and supramolecular levels, which are fundamental criteria for the realization of intelligent matter.

Photoswitchable hydrazones with pyridine-based rotors and halogen substituents

The Z,E-photoisomerization of pyridine-based hydrazone switches is typically suppressed due to the presence of pyridine-based rotors. The crystal structures of studied compounds were investigated using theoretical methods combining DFT and QT-AIM calculations to unveil the nature and properties of the intramolecular hydrogen bonding. In this study, we introduced a new series of pyridine-based hydrazones anchored with o-halogen substituents (2-X) and investigated their photoswitching abilities using 1H NMR and UV-Vis spectroscopy. The efficiency of the photoisomerization from initial 2-X-Z to the 2-X-E isomer varied, with the highest yield observed for 2-Cl-E (55%). Our findings, supported by DFT calculations, revealed the formation of a new diastereomer, 2-X-E*, upon back-photoisomerization. We demonstrated that hydrazones from the 2-X series can be reversibly photoswitched using irradiation from the UV-Vis range, and additionally, we explored the effect of the halogen atom on their switching capabilities and also on their thermodynamics and kinetics of photoswitching, determining their molecular solar thermal energy storage potential.

Triply Adaptive Libraries of Dynamic Covalent Macrocycles: Switching between Sorted and Unsorted States

Dynamic noncovalent and covalent chemistries have enabled the constitutional modulation of chemical entities within chemical dynamic systems. The switching between order and disorder, i.e., self-sorted and unsorted states of constitutional dynamic libraries, remains challenging. Herein, we study the adaptive behaviors of a dynamic library of imine macrocycles generated from dialdehydes and diamines, seeking ways to exert control over sorting and unsorting processes. The distribution of constituents in the present library of dynamic macrocycles is modulated in response to internal and external effectors (e.g., time, metal cations, and chemical fuels), resulting in the transient amplification of self-sorted constituents in out-of-equilibrium states. The present study showcases higher complexity in systems subject to multiple adaptation through the dynamic interconversion between singularity/order and diversity/disorder.

Molecular Ratchets and Kinetic Asymmetry: Giving Chemistry Direction

Over the last two decades ratchet mechanisms have transformed the understanding and design of stochastic molecular systems-biological, chemical and physical-in a move away from the mechanical macroscopic analogies that dominated thinking regarding molecular dynamics in the 1990s and early 2000s (e.g. pistons, springs, etc), to the more scale-relevant concepts that underpin out-of-equilibrium research in the molecular sciences today. Ratcheting has established molecular nanotechnology as a research frontier for energy transduction and metabolism, and has enabled the reverse engineering of biomolecular machinery, delivering insights into how molecules 'walk' and track-based synthesisers operate, how the acceleration of chemical reactions enables energy to be transduced by catalysts (both motor proteins and synthetic catalysts), and how dynamic systems can be driven away from equilibrium through catalysis. The recognition of molecular ratchet mechanisms in biology, and their invention in synthetic systems, is proving significant in areas as diverse as supramolecular chemistry, systems chemistry, dynamic covalent chemistry, DNA nanotechnology, polymer and materials science, molecular biology, heterogeneous catalysis, endergonic synthesis, the origin of life, and many other branches of chemical science. Put simply, ratchet mechanisms give chemistry direction. Kinetic asymmetry, the key feature of ratcheting, is the dynamic counterpart of structural asymmetry (i.e. chirality). Given the ubiquity of ratchet mechanisms in endergonic chemical processes in biology, and their significance for behaviour and function from systems to synthesis, it is surely just as fundamentally important. This Review charts the recognition, invention and development of molecular ratchets, focussing particularly on the role for which they were originally envisaged in chemistry, as design elements for molecular machinery. Different kinetically asymmetric systems are compared, and the consequences of their dynamic behaviour discussed. These archetypal examples demonstrate how chemical systems can be driven inexorably away from equilibrium, rather than relax towards it.

Metal-Flavonoid Interactions-From Simple Complexes to Advanced Systems

For many years, metal-flavonoid complexes have been widely studied as a part of drug discovery programs, but in the last decade their importance in materials science has increased significantly. A deeper understanding of the role of metal ions and flavonoids in constructing simple complexes and more advanced hybrid networks will facilitate the assembly of materials with tailored architecture and functionality. In this Review, we highlight the most essential data on metal-flavonoid systems, presenting a promising alternative in the design of hybrid inorganic-organic materials. We focus mainly on systems containing CuII/I and FeIII/II ions, which are necessary in natural and industrial catalysis. We discuss two kinds of interactions that typically ensure the formation of metal-flavonoid systems, namely coordination and redox reactions. Our intention is to cover the fundamentals of metal-flavonoid systems to show how this knowledge has been already transferred from small molecules to complex materials.

Constitutional adaptation to pKa modulation by remote ester hydrolysis

The mechanisms through which environmental conditions affect the expression of interconnected species is a key step to comprehending the principles underlying complex chemical processes. In Nature, chemical modifications triggered by the environment have a major impact on the structure and function of biomolecules and regulate different reaction pathways. Yet, minimalistic artificial systems implementing related adaptation behaviours remain barely explored. The hydrolysis of amino acid methyl esters to their corresponding amino acids leads to a drastic change in pKa (ca. 7 and 9, respectively) that protonates the free amino group at physiological conditions. Dynamic covalent libraries (DCvLs) based on amino acid methyl esters and aldehydes respond to such hydrolysis and lead to constitutional adaptation. Each of the libraries studied experiences a DCvL conversion allowing for constituent selection due to the silencing of the zwitterionic amino acids towards imine formation. The selective action of different enzymes on the DCvLs results in states with simplified constitutional distributions and transient chirality. When additional components (i.e., scavengers) that are not affected by hydrolysis are introduced into the dynamic libraries, the amino acid methyl ester hydrolysis induces the up-regulation of the constituents made of these scavenging components. In these systems, the constituent distribution is resolved from a scrambled mixture of imines to a state characterized by the predominance of a single aldimine. Remarkably, although the final libraries display higher "simplexity", the different transient states present an increased complexity that allows for the emergence of organized structures [micelle formation] and distributions [up-regulation of two antagonistic constituents]. This reactive site inhibition by a remote chemical modification resembles the scenario found in some enzymes for the regulation of their activity through proximal post-translational modifications.

Friedel-Crafts reactions for biomolecular chemistry

Chemical tools and principles have become central to biological and medical research/applications by leveraging a range of classical organic chemistry reactions. Friedel-Crafts alkylation and acylation are arguably some of the most well-known and used synthetic methods for the preparation of small molecules but their use in biological and medical fields is relatively less frequent than the other reactions, possibly owing to the notion of their plausible incompatibility with biological systems. This review demonstrates advances in Friedel-Crafts alkylation and acylation reactions in a variety of biomolecular chemistry fields. With the discoveries and applications of numerous biomolecule-catalyzed or -assisted processes, these reactions have garnered considerable interest in biochemistry, enzymology, and biocatalysis. Despite the challenges of reactivity and selectivity of biomolecular reactions, the alkylation and acylation reactions demonstrated their utility for the construction and functionalization of all the four major biomolecules (i.e., nucleosides, carbohydrates/saccharides, lipids/fatty acids, and amino acids/peptides/proteins), and their diverse applications in biological, medical, and material fields are discussed. As the alkylation and acylation reactions are often fundamental educational components of organic chemistry courses, this review is intended for both experts and nonexperts by discussing their basic reaction patterns (with the depiction of each reaction mechanism in the ESI) and relevant real-world impacts in order to enrich chemical research and education. The significant growth of biomolecular Friedel-Crafts reactions described here is a testament to their broad importance and utility, and further development and investigations of the reactions will surely be the focus in the organic biomolecular chemistry fields.

Photoswitchable Cascades for Allosteric and Bidirectional Control over Covalent Bonds and Assemblies

Studies of complex systems and emerging properties to mimic biosystems are at the forefront of chemical research. Dynamic multistep cascades, especially those exhibiting allosteric regulation, are challenging. Herein, we demonstrate a versatile platform of photoswitchable covalent cascades toward remote and bidirectional control of reversible covalent bonds and ensuing assemblies. The relay of a photochromic switch, keto-enol equilibrium, and ring-chain equilibrium allows light-mediated reversible allosteric structural changes. The accompanying distinct reactivity further enables photoswitchable dynamic covalent bonding and release of substrates bidirectionally through alternating two wavelengths of light, essentially realizing light-mediated signaling cycles. The downfall of energy by covalent bond formation/scission upon photochemical reactions offers the driving force for the controlled direction of the cascade. To show the molecular diversity, photoswitchable on-demand assembly/disassembly of covalent polymers, including structurally reconfigurable polymers, was realized. This work achieves photoswitchable allosteric regulation of covalent architectures within dynamic multistep cascades, which has rarely been reported before. The results resemble allosteric control within biological signaling networks and should set the stage for many endeavors, such as dynamic assemblies, molecular motors, responsive polymers, and intelligent materials.

Directional Crystal Jumping Controlled by Chirality

Jumping crystals of racemic mixtures of asparagine monohydrate have been presented in this contribution to emphasize the key role of molecular chirality in governing the direction of macroscopic motions. When heated at the specific faces of the single crystals, a pair of enantiomorphs jump in opposite directions, which are further utilized for chiral resolution. The hydrogen-bonded networks between asparagine molecules in a specific direction provide oriented channels for the escape of water molecules during the dehydration, serving as a foundation for the directional crystal jumping. Our findings not only lay the foundation for the future creation of directed actuation systems based on dynamic crystals but shall also guide the efforts to reveal the correlation between chirality and motion across diverse realms of knowledge.

Triple Adaptation of Constitutional Dynamic Networks of Imines in Response to Micellar Agents: Internal Uptake-Interfacial Localization-Shape Transition

Understanding the behavior of complex chemical reaction networks and how environmental conditions can modulate their organization as well as the associated outcomes may take advantage of the design of related artificial systems. Microenvironments with defined boundaries are of particular interest for their unique properties and prebiotic significance. Dynamic covalent libraries (DCvLs) and their underlying constitutional dynamic networks (CDNs) have been shown to be appropriate for studying adaptation to several processes, including compartmentalization. However, microcompartments (e.g., micelles) provide specific environments for the selective protection from interfering reactions such as hydrolysis and an enhanced chemical promiscuity due to the interface, governing different processes of network modulation. Different interactions between the micelles and the library constituents lead to dynamic sensing, resulting in different expressions of the network through pattern generation. The constituents integrated into the micelles are protected from hydrolysis and hence preferentially expressed in the network composition at the cost of constitutionally linked members. In the present work, micellar integration was observed for two processes: internal uptake based on hydrophobic forces and interfacial localization relying on attractive electrostatic interactions. The latter drives a complex triple adaptation of the network with feedback on the shape of the self-assembled entity. Our results demonstrate how microcompartments can enforce the expression of constituents of CDNs by reducing the hydrolysis of uptaken members, unravelling processes that govern the response of reactions networks. Such studies open the way toward using DCvLs and CDNs to understand the emergence of complexity within reaction networks by their interactions with microenvironments.

Spontaneous Multi-scale Supramolecular Assembly Driven by Noncovalent Interactions Coupled with the Continuous Marangoni Effect

Reported herein is the multi-scale supramolecular assembly (MSSA) process along with redox reactions driven by supramolecular interactions coupled with the spontaneous Marangoni effect in ionic liquid (IL)-based extraction systems. The black powder, the single sphere with a black exterior, and the single colorless sphere were formed step by step at the interface when an aqueous solution of KMnO4 was mixed with the IL phase 1-(2-hydroxyethyl)-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl) imide (C2OHmimNTf2) bearing octyl(phenyl)-N,N-diisobutylcarbamoylmethylphosphine oxide (CMPO). The mechanism of the whole process was studied systematically. The phenomena were related closely to the change in the valence state of Mn. The MnO4- ion could be reduced quickly to δ-MnO2 and further to Mn2+ slowly by the hydroxyl-functionalized IL C2OHmimNTf2. Based on Mn2+, Mn(CMPO)32+, elementary building blocks (EBBs), and [EBB]n clusters were generated step by step. The [EBB]n clusters with the large enough size that were transferred to the interface, together with the remaining δ-MnO2, assembled into the single sphere with a black exterior, driven by supramolecular interactions coupled with the spontaneous Marangoni effect. When the remaining δ-MnO2 was used up, the mixed single sphere turned completely colorless. It was found that the reaction site of C2OHmim+ with Mn(VII) and Mn(IV) was distributed mainly at the side chain with a hydroxyl group. The MSSA process presents unique spontaneous phase changes. This work paves the way for the practical application of the MSSA-based separation method developed recently. The process also provides a convenient way to observe in situ and characterize directly the continuous Marangoni effect.

Phototriggered Equilibrated and Transient Orthogonally Operating Constitutional Dynamic Networks Guiding Biocatalytic Cascades

The photochemical deprotection of structurally engineered o-nitrobenzylphosphate-caged hairpin nucleic acids is introduced as a versatile method to evolve constitutional dynamic networks, CDNs. The photogenerated CDNs, in the presence of fuel strands, interact with auxiliary CDNs, resulting in their dynamically equilibrated reconfiguration. By modification of the constituents associated with the auxiliary CDNs with glucose oxidase (GOx)/horseradish peroxidase (HRP) or the lactate dehydrogenase (LDH)/nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) cofactor, the photogenerated CDN drives the orthogonal operation upregulated/downregulated operation of the GOx/HRP and LDH/NAD+ biocatalytic cascade in the conjugate mixture of auxiliary CDNs. Also, the photogenerated CDN was applied to control the reconfiguration of coupled CDNs, leading to upregulated/downregulated formation of the antithrombin aptamer units, resulting in the dictated inhibition of thrombin activity (fibrinogen coagulation). Moreover, a reaction module consisting of GOx/HRP-modified o-nitrobenzyl phosphate-caged DNA hairpins, photoresponsive caged auxiliary duplexes, and nickase leads upon irradiation to the emergence of a transient, dissipative CDN activating in the presence of two alternate auxiliary triggers, achieving transient operation of up- and downregulated GOx/HRP biocatalytic cascades.

From Frank-Kasper, Quasicrystals, and Biological Membrane Mimics to Reprogramming In Vivo the Living Factory to Target the Delivery of mRNA with One-Component Amphiphilic Janus Dendrimers

This Perspective is dedicated to the 25th Anniversary of Biomacromolecules. It provides a personal view on the developing field of the polymer and biology interface over the 25 years since the journal was launched by the American Chemical Society (ACS). This Perspective is meant to bridge an article published in the first issue of the journal and recent bioinspired developments in the laboratory of the corresponding author. The discovery of supramolecular spherical helices self-organizing into Frank-Kasper and quasicrystals as models of icosahedral viruses, as well as of columnar helical assemblies that mimic rodlike viruses by supramolecular dendrimers, is briefly presented. The transplant of these assemblies from supramolecular dendrimers to block copolymers, giant surfactants, and other self-organized soft matter follows. Amphiphilic self-assembling Janus dendrimers and glycodendrimers as mimics of biological membranes and their glycans are discussed. New concepts derived from them that evolved in the in vivo targeted delivery of mRNA with the simplest one-component synthetic vector systems are introduced. Some synthetic methodologies employed during the synthesis and self-assembly are explained. Unraveling bioinspired applications of novel materials concludes this brief 25th Anniversary Perspective of Biomacromolecules.

What can molecular assembly learn from catalysed assembly in living organisms?

Molecular assembly is the process of organizing individual molecules into larger structures and complex systems. The self-assembly approach is predominantly utilized in creating artificial molecular assemblies, and was believed to be the primary mode of molecular assembly in living organisms as well. However, it has been shown that the assembly of many biological complexes is "catalysed" by other molecules, rather than relying solely on self-assembly. In this review, we summarize these catalysed-assembly (catassembly) phenomena in living organisms and systematically analyse their mechanisms. We then expand on these phenomena and discuss related concepts, including catalysed-disassembly and catalysed-reassembly. Catassembly proves to be an efficient and highly selective strategy for synergistically controlling and manipulating various noncovalent interactions, especially in hierarchical molecular assemblies. Overreliance on self-assembly may, to some extent, hinder the advancement of artificial molecular assembly with powerful features. Furthermore, inspired by the biological catassembly phenomena, we propose guidelines for designing artificial catassembly systems and developing characterization and theoretical methods, and review pioneering works along this new direction. Overall, this approach may broaden and deepen our understanding of molecular assembly, enabling the construction and control of intelligent assembly systems with advanced functionality.

Highly Ordered Co-Assembly of Bisurea Functionalized Molecular Switches at the Solid-Liquid Interface

Immobilization of stimulus-responsive systems on solid surfaces is beneficial for controlled signal transmission and adaptive behavior while allowing the characterization of the functional interface with high sensitivity and high spatial resolution. Positioning of the stimuli-responsive units with nanometer-scale precision across the adaptive surface remains one of the bottlenecks in the extraction of cooperative function. Nanoscale organization, cooperativity, and amplification remain key challenges in bridging the molecular and the macroscopic worlds. Here we report on the design, synthesis, and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) characterization of overcrowded alkene photoswitches merged in self-assembled networks physisorbed at the solid-liquid interface. A detailed anchoring strategy that ensures appropriate orientation of the switches with respect to the solid surface through the use of bis-urea groups is presented. We implement a co-assembly strategy that enables the merging of the photoswitches within physisorbed monolayers of structurally similar 'spacer' molecules. The self-assembly of the individual components and the co-assemblies was examined in detail using (sub)molecular resolution STM which confirms the robust immobilization and controlled orientation of the photoswitches within the spacer monolayers. The experimental STM data is supported by detailed molecular mechanics (MM) simulations. Different designs of the switches and the spacers were investigated which allowed us to formulate guidelines that enable the precise organization of the photoswitches in crystalline physisorbed self-assembled molecular networks.

Deliver on a Promise: Hydrogen-Bonded Polymer Nanomedicine with a Precise Ratio of Chemodrug and Photosensitizer for Intelligent Cancer Therapy

The outcomes of combined cancer therapy are largely related to loading content and contribution of each therapeutic agent; however, fine-tuning the ratio of two coloaded components toward precise cancer therapy is a great challenge and still remains in its infancy. We herein develop a supramolecular polymer scaffold to optimize the coloading ratio of chemotherapeutic agent and photosensitizer through hydrogen-bonding (H-bonding) interaction, for maximizing the efficacy of intelligent cancer chemo/photodynamic therapies (CT/PDT). To do so, we first synthesize a thymine (THY)-functionalized tetraphenylporphyrin photosensitizer (i.e., TTPP), featuring the same molecular configuration of H-bonding array with chemotherapeutic carmofur (e.g., 1-hexylcarbamoyl-5-fluorouracil, HCFU). Meanwhile, a six-arm star-shaped amphiphilic polymer vehicle P(DAPA-co-DPMA-co-OEGMA)6 (poly(diaminopyridine acrylamide-co-2-(diisopropylamino)ethyl methacrylate-co-oligo(ethylene glycol) monomethyl ether methacrylate)6) is prepared, bearing hydrophilic and biocompatible POEGMA segment, along with hydrophobic PDAPA and PDPMA segments, characterizing the randomly dispersed dual functionalities, i.e., heterocomplementary H-bonding DAP motifs and pH-responsive protonation DPMA content. Thanks to the identical DAP/HCFU and DAP/TTPP H-bonding association capability, the incorporation of both HCFU and TTPP to six-arm star-shaped P(DAPA-co-DPMA-co-OEGMA)6 vehicle, with an optimized coloading ratio, can be straightforwardly realized by adjusting the feeding concentrations, thus yielding the hydrogen-bonded supramolecular nanoparticles (i.e., HCFU-TTPP-SPNs), demonstrating the codelivery of two components with the promise to optimize the combined CT/PDT efficacy.

Nonclassical Crystal Growth of Supramolecular Polymers in Aqueous Medium

A mechanistic understanding of the principles governing the hierarchical organization of supramolecular polymers offers a paradigm for tailoring synthetic molecular architectures at the nano to micrometric scales. Herein, the unconventional crystal growth mechanism of a supramolecular polymer of superbenzene(coronene)-diphenylalanine conjugate (Cr-FFOEt ) is demonstrated. 3D electron diffraction (3D ED), a technique underexplored in supramolecular chemistry, is effectively utilized to gain a molecular-level understanding of the gradual growth of the initially formed poorly crystalline hairy, fibril-like supramolecular polymers into the ribbon-like crystallites. The further evolution of these nanosized flat ribbons into microcrystals by oriented attachment and lateral fusion is probed by time-resolved microscopy and electron diffraction. The gradual morphological and structural changes reveal the nonclassical crystal growth pathway, where the balance of strong and weak intermolecular interactions led to a structure beyond the nanoscale. The role of distinct π-stacking and H-bonding interactions that drive the nonclassical crystallization process of Cr-FFOEt supramolecular polymers is analyzed in comparison to analogous molecules, Py-FFOEt and Cr-FF forming helical and twisted fibers, respectively. Furthermore, the Cr-FFOEt crystals formed through nonclassical crystallization are found to improve the functional properties.

Chemically Fueled Logic AND Gate with Double Encoding in the Time Domain

To increase information density and security in communication, Nature at times encodes signals in the time domain, for instance, Ca2+ ion signals. Double encoding in the time domain operates beyond this level of security because the data are encoded in two time-dependent output signals showing distinct periods, frequencies, and full duration half-maxima. To illustrate such a protocol, a three-component ensemble consisting of a double ion-selective luminophore with two distinct receptor sites, hexacyclen, and diaza-18-crown-6 ether is demonstrated to act as a logic AND gate with Ag+ and Ca2+ ions as inputs. The gate shows an unprecedented 2-fold time-encoded fluorescence output at 590 and 488 nm based on metal ion pulses with distinct periods when trichloroacetic acid is applied as chemical fuel.

A Kinetic Investigation of the Supramolecular Chiral Self-Assembling Process of Cationic Organometallic (2,2':6',2″-terpyridine)methylplatinum(II) Complexes with Poly(L-glutamic Acid)

The cationic platinum(II) organometallic complex [Pt(terpy)Me]+ (terpy = 2,2':6',2″-terpyridine) at mild acidic pH interacts with poly(L-glutamic acid) (L-PGA) in its α-helix conformation, affording chiral supramolecular adducts. Their kinetics of formation have been investigated in detail as a function of the concentrations of both reagents and changing pH, ionic strength, the length of the polymeric scaffold and temperature. After a very fast early stage, the kinetic traces have been analyzed as three consecutive steps, suggesting a mechanism based on the electrostatic fast formation of a not-organized aggregate that subsequently evolves through different rearrangements to form the eventual supramolecular adduct. A model for this species has been proposed based on (i) the attractive electrostatic interaction of the cationic platinum(II) complexes and the polyelectrolyte and (ii) the π-stacking interactions acting among the [Pt(terpy)Me]+ units.

The network structure in transient telechelic polymer networks: extension of the Miller-Macosko model

The combination of supramolecular chemistry and polymer science has resulted in the development of transient polymer networks with diverse properties and applications. Specifically, polymer networks based on transient linking of telechelic polymer precursors offer a high degree of control over the network structure, which can reform in response to external stimuli that change the connectivity of transient bonds. Therefore, the combination of the versatile polymer functionality and the adjustable connectivity of transient bonds may result in complex network structures that are not easy to predict or characterize. To address this gap, herein we extend the Miller-Macosko model to forecast the network connectivity of transient telechelic polymer networks made with various polymer functionalities and transient connectivities represented by metal-ligand complexes. This model predicts a universal dependence of the network structure and modulus on preparative parameters including the metal ion identity, characterized by the complexation thermodynamics, and concentration. Moreover, we demonstrate that given the thermodynamic tendency of forming network defects like loops, the model can include such imperfections, enabling rheological properties to be used indirectly for the characterization of defect content. We outline general guidelines to extend the model to more intricate structures, enhancing our understanding of the structure-property relationship in complex transient polymer networks.

Self-organization of metallo-supramolecular polymer networks by free formation of pyridine-phenanthroline heteroleptic complexes

Nature employs spontaneous self-organization of supramolecular bonds to create complex matter capable of adaptation and self-healing. Accordingly, the self-sorting of unlike ligands towards a cooperative heteroleptic complex or narcistic homoleptic association in a mixed ligand system is frequently employed to form interchangeable stimuli-responsive complex geometries with a wide range of applications. This notion is however just rarely employed in the organization of polymer networks. In this paper, we report the free-formation of heteroleptic complexes between tetra-am poly(ethylene glycol) (tetraPEG) precursors functionalized either with pyridine (tetraPy) or phenanthroline (tetraEPhen). Among a wide range of studied metal ions, tetraPy could form a network only in combination with Pd2+, presumably with a square-planar geometry, highlighting the importance of complex strength and stability in forming gels with monodentate ligands. Also, mixed networks with tetraEPhen form only in combination with Pd2+ and Fe2+, with strengths surpassing those of individual components and stabilities incomparable to those of parent networks, indicative of heteroleptic complexation. Extensive rheological, UV-vis, and DFT simulation studies revealed the coexistence of different coordination geometries, with an octahedral arrangement prevailing in the presence of Fe2+ and a square-planar geometry in the presence of Pd2+. Therefore, this study offers new opportunities for the development of stimuli-responsive topology-switching polymer networks.

Self-Assembly of Rhenium(I) Double-Stranded Helicate and Mesocate from Flexible Ditopic Benzimidazolyl/Naphthanoimidazolyl N-Donor and Rigid Bis-Chelating Hydroxyphenylbenzimidazolyl N∩OH-Donor Ligands: Synthesis, Characterization, and Photophysical and B-DNA Docking Studies

The self-assembly of three rheniumtricarbonyl core-based supramolecular coordination complexes (SCCs), fac-[Re(CO)3(μ-L)(μ-L')Re(CO)3] (1-3) was carried out using Re2(CO)10, rigid bis-chelating ligand (HO∩N-Ph-N∩OH (L1) (where HO∩N = 2-hydroxyphenylbenzimidazolyl), and flexible ditopic N-donor ligands (L2 = bis(3-((1H-benzoimidazol-1-yl)methyl)-2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)methane, L3 = bis(3-((1H-naphtho[2,3-d]imidazol-1-yl)methyl)-2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)methane, L4 = bis(4-(naphtho[2,3-d]imidazol-1-yl-methyl)phenyl)methane) via a one-pot solvothermal approach. In the solid state, the dinuclear SCCs adopt heteroleptic double-stranded helicate and meso-helicate architectures. The supramolecular structures of the complexes are retained in the solution based on the 1H NMR and electrospray ionization (ESI)-mass analysis. The spectral and photophysical properties of the complexes were studied both experimentally and using time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) calculations. All of the supramolecules exhibited emission in both solution and solid states. Theoretical studies were conducted to determine the chemical reactivity parameters, molecular electrostatic potential surface plots, natural population, and Hirshfeld analysis for complexes 1-3. Additionally, molecular docking studies were carried out for complexes 1-3 with B-DNA.

Dynamic covalent self-assembly and self-sorting processes in the formation of imine-based macrocycles and macrobicyclic cages

Investigating the self-assembly and self-sorting behaviour of dynamic covalent organic architectures makes possible the parallel generation of multiple discrete products in a single one pot procedure. We here report the self-assembly of covalent organic macrocycles and macrobicyclic cages from dialdehyde and polyamine components via multiple [2 + 2] and [3 + 2] polyimine condensations. Furthermore, component self-sorting processes have been monitored within the dynamic covalent libraries formed by these macrocycles and macrobicyclic cages. The progressive assembly of the final structures involves intermediates which undergo component selection and self-correction to generate the final thermodynamic constituents. The homo-self-sorting observed seems to involve entropic factors, as the homoleptic species present a higher symmetry than the competing heteroleptic ones. This study not only emphasizes the importance of an adequate design of the components of complex self-sorting systems, but also verifies the conjecture that systems of higher complexity may generate simpler outputs through the operation of competitive self-sorting.

BODIPY as a Multifunctional Theranostic Reagent in Biomedicine: Self-Assembly, Properties, and Applications

The use of boron dipyrromethene (BODIPY) in biomedicine is reviewed. To open, its synthesis and regulatory strategies are summarized, and inspiring cutting-edge work in post-functionalization strategies is highlighted. A brief overview of assembly model of BODIPY is then provided: BODIPY is introduced as a promising building block for the formation of single- and multicomponent self-assembled systems, including nanostructures suitable for aqueous environments, thereby showing the great development potential of supramolecular assembly in biomedicine applications. The frontier progress of BODIPY in biomedical application is thereafter described, supported by examples of the frontiers of biomedical applications of BODIPY-containing smart materials: it mainly involves the application of materials based on BODIPY building blocks and their assemblies in fluorescence bioimaging, photoacoustic imaging, disease treatment including photodynamic therapy, photothermal therapy, and immunotherapy. Lastly, not only the current status of the BODIPY family in the biomedical field but also the challenges worth considering are summarized. At the same time, insights into the future development prospects of biomedically applicable BODIPY are provided.

Emergence of Cooperative Glucose-Binding Networks in Adaptive Peptide Systems

Minimalistic peptide-based systems that bind sugars in water are challenging to design due to the weakness of interactions and required cooperative contributions from specific amino-acid side chains. Here, we used a bottom-up approach to create peptide-based adaptive glucose-binding networks by mixing glucose with selected sets of input dipeptides (up to 4) in the presence of an amidase to enable in situ reversible peptide elongation, forming mixtures of up to 16 dynamically interacting tetrapeptides. The choice of input dipeptides was based on amino-acid abundance in glucose-binding sites found in the protein data bank, with side chains that can support hydrogen bonding and CH-π interactions. Tetrapeptide sequence amplification patterns, determined through LC-MS analysis, served as a readout for collective interactions and led to the identification of optimized binding networks. Systematic variation of dipeptide input revealed the emergence of two networks of non-covalent hydrogen bonding and CH-π interactions that can co-exist, are cooperative and context-dependent. A cooperative binding mode was determined by studying the binding of the most amplified tetrapeptide (AWAD) with glucose in isolation. Overall, these results demonstrate that the bottom-up design of complex systems can recreate emergent behaviors driven by covalent and non-covalent self-organization that are not observed in reductionist designs and lead to the identification of system-level cooperative binding motifs.

Chiral Binaphthalene Building Blocks for Self-Assembled Nanoscale CPL Emitters

The introduction of biuret hydrogen-bonding sites onto chiral binaphthalene-based chromophores was investigated as a route to sub-micron-sized, vesicle-like aggregates endowed with chiroptical properties. The synthesis was conducted from the corresponding chiral 4,4'-dibromo-1,1'-bis(2-naphthol) via Suzuki-Miyaura coupling to afford luminescent chromophores whose emission spectrum could be tuned from blue to yellow-green through extension of the conjugation. For all compounds, the spontaneous formation of hollow spheres with a diameter of ca. 200-800 nm was evidenced by scanning electron microscopy, along with strong asymmetry in the circularly polarized absorption spectra. For some compounds, the emission also displayed circular polarization with values of g_lum = ca. 10^-3 which could be increased upon aggregation.

Supramolecular Shish Kebabs: Higher Order Dimeric Structures from Ring-in-Rings Complexes with Conformational Adaptivity

Use of abiotic chemical systems for understanding higher order superstructures is challenging. Here we report a ring-in-ring(s) system comprising a hydrogen-bonded macrocycle and cyclobis(paraquat-o-phenylene) tetracation (o-Box) or cyclobis(paraquat-p-phenylene) tetracation (CBPQT⁴⁺ , p-Box) that assembles to construct discrete higher order structures with adaptive conformation. As indicated by mass spectrometry, computational modeling, NMR spectroscopy, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, this ring-in-ring(s) system features the box-directed aggregation of multiple macrocycles, leading to generation of several stable species such as H4G (1 a/o-Box) and H5G (1 a/o-Box). Remarkably, a dimeric shish-kebab-like ring-in-rings superstructure H7G2 (1 a/o-Box) or H8G2 (1 a/p-Box) is formed from the coaxial stacking of two ring-in-rings units. The formation of such unique dimeric superstructures is attributed to the large π-surface of this 2D planar macrocycle and the conformational variation of both host and guest.

Kinetic Asymmetry versus Dissipation in the Evolution of Chemical Systems as Exemplified by Single Enzyme Chemotaxis

Single enzyme chemotaxis is a phenomenon by which a nonequilibrium spatial distribution of an enzyme is created and maintained by concentration gradients of the substrate and product of the catalyzed reaction. These gradients can arise either naturally through metabolism or experimentally, e.g., by flow of materials through microfluidic channels or by use of diffusion chambers with semipermeable membranes. Numerous hypotheses regarding the mechanism of this phenomenon have been proposed. Here, we discuss a mechanism based solely on diffusion and chemical reaction and show that kinetic asymmetry, a difference in the transition state energies for dissociation/association of substrate and product, and diffusion asymmetry, a difference in the diffusivities of the bound and free forms of the enzyme, are the determinates of the direction of chemotaxis and can result in either positive or negative chemotaxis, both of which have been demonstrated experimentally. Exploration of these fundamental symmetries that govern nonequilibrium behavior helps to distinguish between possible mechanisms for the evolution of a chemical system from initial to the steady state and whether the principle that determines the direction a system shifts when exposed to an external energy source is based on thermodynamics or on kinetics with the latter being supported by the results of the present paper. Our results show that, while dissipation ineluctably accompanies nonequilibrium phenomena, including chemotaxis, systems do not evolve to maximize or minimize dissipation but rather to attain greater kinetic stability and accumulate in regions where their effective diffusion coefficient is as small as possible. The chemotactic response to the chemical gradients formed by other enzymes participating in a catalytic cascade provides a mechanism for forming loose associations known as metabolons. Significantly, the direction of the effective force due to these gradients depends on the kinetic asymmetry of the enzyme and so can be nonreciprocal, where one enzyme is attracted to another enzyme, but the other enzyme is repelled by the one, in seeming contradiction to Newtons third law. This nonreciprocity is an important ingredient in the behavior of active matter.

Using supramolecular machinery to engineer directional charge propagation in photoelectrochemical devices

Molecular photoelectrochemical devices are hampered by electron-hole recombination after photoinduced electron transfer, causing losses in power conversion efficiency. Inspired by natural photosynthesis, we demonstrate the use of supramolecular machinery as a strategy to inhibit recombination through an organization of molecular components that enables unbinding of the final electron acceptor upon reduction. We show that preorganization of a macrocyclic electron acceptor to a dye yields a pseudorotaxane that undergoes a fast (completed within ~50 ps) 'ring-launching' event upon electron transfer from the dye to the macrocycle, releasing the anionic macrocycle and thus reducing charge recombination. Implementing this system into p-type dye-sensitized solar cells yielded a 16-fold and 5-fold increase in power conversion efficiency compared to devices based on the two control dyes that are unable to facilitate pseudorotaxane formation. The active repulsion of the anionic macrocycle with concomitant reformation of a neutral pseudorotaxane complex circumvents recombination at both the semiconductor-electrolyte and semiconductor-dye interfaces, enabling a threefold enhancement in hole lifetime.

Modulating the Lifetime of DNA Motifs Using Visible Light and Small Molecules

Here we regulate the formation of dissipative assemblies built from DNA using a merocyanine photoacid that responds to visible light. The operation of our system and the relative distribution of species within it are controlled by irradiation time, initial pH value, and the concentration of a small-molecule binder that inhibits the reaction cycle. This approach is modular, does not require DNA modification, and can be used for several DNA sequences and lengths. Our system design allows for waste-free control of dissipative DNA nanotechnology, toward the generation of nonequilibrium, life-like nanodevices.

Macromolecular Information Transfer

Macromolecular information transfer can be defined as the process by which a coded monomer sequence is communicated from one macromolecule to another. In such a transfer process, the information sequence can be kept identical, transformed into a complementary sequence or even translated into a different molecular language. Such mechanisms are crucial in biology and take place in DNA→DNA replication, DNA→RNA transcription and RNA→protein translation. In fact, there would be no life on Earth without macromolecular information transfer. Mimicking such processes with synthetic macromolecules would also be of major scientific relevance because it would open up new avenues for technological applications (e.g. data storage and processing) but also for the creation of artificial life. In this important context, this minireview summarizes recent research about information transfer in synthetic oligomers and polymers. Medium- and long-term perspectives are also discussed.

Design of supramolecular hybrid nanomaterials comprising peptide-based supramolecular nanofibers and in situ generated DNA nanoflowers through rolling circle amplification

The artificial construction of multicomponent supramolecular materials comprising plural supramolecular architectures that are assembled orthogonally from their constituent molecules has attracted growing attention. Here, we describe the design and development of multicomponent supramolecular materials by combining peptide-based self-assembled fibrous nanostructures with globular DNA nanoflowers constructed by the rolling circle amplification reaction. The orthogonally constructed architectures were dissected by fluorescence imaging using the selective fluorescence staining procedures adapted to this study. The present, unique hybrid materials developed by taking advantage of each supramolecular architecture based on their peptide and DNA functions may offer distinct opportunities to explore their bioapplications as a soft matrix.

Ligand-Modulated Nuclearity and Geometry in Nickel(II) Hydrazone Complexes: From Mononuclear Complexes to Acetato- and/or Phenoxido-Bridged Clusters

The propensity of 4-hydroxybenzhydrazone-related ligands derived from 3-methoxysalicylaldehyde (H₂L^3OMe), 4-methoxysalicylaldehyde (H₂L^4OMe), and salicylaldehyde (H₂L^H) to act as chelating and/or bridging ligands in Ni(II) complexes was investigated. Three clusters of different nuclearities, [Ni₃(L^3OMe)₂(OAc)₂(MeOH)₂]∙2MeOH∙MeCN (1∙2MeOH∙MeCN), [Ni₂(HL^4OMe)(L^4OMe)(OAc)(MeOH)₂]∙4.7MeOH (2∙4.7MeOH), and [Ni₄(HL^H)₂(L^H)₂(OAc)₂]∙4MeOH·0.63H₂O·0.5MeCN·HOAc (3∙4MeOH·0.63H₂O·0.5MeCN·HOAc), were prepared from Ni(OAc)₂∙4H₂O and the corresponding ligand in the presence of Et₃N. The hydrazones in these acetato- and phenoxido-bridged clusters acted as singly or doubly deprotonated ligands. When pyridine was used, mononuclear complexes with the square-planar geometry seemed to be favoured, as found for complexes [Ni(L^3OMe)(py)] (4), [Ni(L^4Ome)(py)] (5) and [Ni(L^H)(py)] (6). Ligand substituent effects and the stability of square-planar complexes were investigated and quantified by extensive quantum chemical analysis. Obtained results showed that standard Gibbs energies of binding were lower for square-planar than for octahedral complexes. Starting from [MoO₂(L)(EtOH)] complexes as precursors and applying the metal-exchange procedure, the mononuclear complexes [Ni(HL^3OMe)₂]∙MeOH (7∙MeOH) and [Ni(HL^H)]∙2MeOH (9∙2MeOH) and hybrid organic-inorganic compound [Ni₂(HL^4OMe)₂(CH₃OH)₄][Mo₄O₁₀(OCH₃)₆] (10) were achieved. The octahedral complexes [Ni(HL)₂] (7-9) can also be obtained by the direct synthesis from Ni(Oac)₂∙4H₂O and the appropriate ligand under specific reaction conditions. Crystal and molecular structures of 1∙2MeOH∙MeCN, 2∙4.7MeOH, 3∙4MeOH∙0.63H₂O∙0.5MeCN∙HOAc, 4, 5, 9∙2MeOH, and 10 were determined by the single-crystal X-ray diffraction method.

Conjoined and non-conjoined coordination cages with palladium(II) vertices: structural diversity, solution dynamics, and intermolecular interactions

Self-assembled coordination complexes prepared from a combination of Pd(II) components with one or more types of high-symmetry or low-symmetry bis/tris/tetrakis-monodentate ligands are considered in this review. The structures of these complexes are viewed in terms of the presence of a metallo-macromonocycle or conjoined metallo-macromonocycles/metallocages in the frameworks. Analysis of the typical molecular structures revealed an open truth that one or more units of metallo-macromonocycles can be conjoined to afford planar or non-planar systems. In the same line, the enveloping surface of a 3D cage can be considered as a multiple number of conjoined metallomacrocycles that embrace a 3D space from all directions. However, two or more units of cages are conjoined in a multi-3D-cavity cage system and such a system is considered as a conjoined cage. Construction of such conjoined cages having a finite but multiple number of 3D-cavities unified in a single molecular architecture is a challenging task when compared to that of single-3D-cavity based compounds. Conjoining of as many as four units of 3D cages is known so far. Single- as well as multi-cavity cages of lower symmetry have become a very recent trend in this regard where low-symmetry ligands or mixed ligand ensembles are crafted in the framework of the cages. Other structural diversities like helicity in cages, and supramolecular isomerism are also included in this assorted literature work. Although isomerism in classical coordination complexes is well known, it is very less studied in self-assembled coordination complexes. Ligand isomerism is one such feature that is reviewed here. The dynamic behavior of the cages results in interesting reactivity aspects. A large variety of dynamic processes are collected under an umbrella, i.e., "ligand exchange reactions" and described with examples. Intermolecular interaction among the already self-assembled molecules is possible in solution, solid, and gel-phases as discussed in the last part of this review. The understanding of intermolecular interaction is likely to influence different areas of research including crystal engineering, and materials chemistry.

Shape-Dependent Complementary Ditopic Terpyridine Pair with Two Levels of Self-Recognition for Coordination-Driven Self-Assembly

Molecular recognition in biological systems plays a vital role in the precise construction of biomacromolecules and the corresponding biological activities. Such recognition mainly relies on the highly specific binding of complementary molecular pairs with complementary sizes, shapes, and intermolecular forces. It still remains challenging to develop artificial complementary motif pairs for coordination-driven self-assembly. Herein, a series of shape-dependent complementary motif pairs, based on ditopic 2,2':6',2″-terpyridine (TPY) backbone, are designed and synthesized. The fidelity degrees of self-assemblies from these motifs are carefully evaluated by multi-dimensional mass spectrometry, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and molecular modeling. In addition, two levels of self-recognition in both homoleptic and heteroleptic assembly are discovered in the assembled system. Through finely tuning the shape and size of the ligands, a complementary pair is developed with error-free narcissistically self-sorting at two levels of self-recognition, and the intrinsic principle is carefully investigated.

Luminescent Möbius Strip of a Flexible Halogen-Bonded Cocrystal Evolved from Ring and Helix

Luminescent Möbius strip microstructures have been created for the first time based on flexible organic single crystals via a template-free solution self-assembly. We herein demonstrated a rationally designed morphological evolution toward Möbius strips from rings and helixes. Our findings lay the foundation for the future construction of complex matters with predetermined morphologies and functions from crystal systems.

Nonlinear Effects in Asymmetric Catalysis by Design: Concept, Synthesis, and Applications

Asymmetric synthesis constitutes a key technology for the preparation of enantiomerically pure compounds as well as for the selective control of individual stereocenters in the synthesis of complex compounds. It is thus of extraordinary importance for the synthesis of chiral drugs, dietary supplements, flavors, and fragrances, as well as novel materials with tunable and reconfigurable chiroptical properties or the assembly of complex natural products. Typically, enantiomerically pure catalysts are used for this purpose. To prepare enantiomerically pure ligands or organocatalysts, one can make use of the natural chiral pool. Ligands and organocatalysts with an atropisomeric biphenyl and binaphthyl system have become popular, as they are configurationally stable and contain a C2-symmetric skeleton, which has been found to be particularly privileged. For catalysts with opposite configurations, both product enantiomers can be obtained. Configurationally flexible biphenyl systems initially appeared to be unsuitable for this purpose, as they racemize after successful enantiomer separation and thus are neither storable nor afford a reproducible enantioselectivity. However, there are strategies that exploit the dynamics of such ligands to stereoconvergently enrich one of the catalyst enantiomers. This can be achieved, for example, by coordinating an enantiomerically pure additive to a ligand-metal complex, which results in deracemization of the configurationally flexible biphenyl system, thereby enriching the thermodynamically preferred diastereomer. In this Account, we present our strategy to design stereochemically flexible catalysts that combine the properties of supramolecular recognition, stereoconvergent alignment, and catalysis. Such systems are capable to recognize the chirality of the target product, leading to an increase in enantioselectivity during asymmetric catalysis. We have systematically developed and investigated these smart catalyst systems and have found ways to specifically design and synthesize them for various applications. In addition to (i) reaction product-induced chiral amplification, we have developed systems with (ii) intermolecular and (iii) intramolecular recognition, and successfully applied them in asymmetric catalysis. Our results pave the way for new applications such as temperature-controlled enantioselectivity, controlled inversion of enantioselectivity with the same chirality of the recognition unit, generation of positive nonlinear effects, and targeted design of autocatalytic systems through dynamic formation of transient catalysts. Understanding such systems is of enormous importance for catalytic processes leading to symmetry breaking and amplification of small imbalances of enantiomers and offer a possible explanation of homochirality of biological systems. In addition, we are learning how to target supramolecular interactions to enhance enantioselectivities in asymmetric catalysis through secondary double stereocontrol. Configurationally flexible catalysts will enable future resource-efficient development of asymmetric syntheses, as enantioselectivities can be fully switched by stereoselective alignment of the stereochemically flexible ligand core on demand.

Molecular Evolutionary Growth of Ultralong Semiconducting Double-Walled Carbon Nanotubes

The self-assembling preparation accompanied with template auto-catalysis loop and the ability to gather energy, induces the appearance of chirality and entropy reduction in biotic systems. However, an abiotic system with biotic characteristics is of great significance but still missing. Here, it is demonstrated that the molecular evolution is characteristic of ultralong carbon nanotube preparation, revealing the advantage of chiral assembly through template auto-catalysis growth, stepwise-enriched chirality distribution with decreasing entropy, and environmental effects on the evolutionary growth. Specifically, the defective and metallic nanotubes perform inferiority to semiconducting counterparts, among of which the ones with double walls and specific chirality (n, m) are more predominant due to molecular coevolution. An explicit evolutionary trend for tailoring certain layer chirality is presented toward perfect near-(2n, n)-containing semiconducting double-walled nanotubes. These findings extend our conceptual understanding for the template auto-catalysis assembly of abiotic carbon nanotubes, and provide an inspiration for preparing chiral materials with kinetic stability by evolutionary growth.

Insights into the spontaneous multi-scale supramolecular assembly in an ionic liquid-based extraction system

Herein, we report a four-step mechanism for the spontaneous multi-scale supramolecular assembly (MSSA) process in a two-phase system concerning an ionic liquid (IL). The complex ions, elementary building blocks (EBBs), [EBB]_n clusters and macroscopic assembly (MA) sphere are formed step by step. The porous large-sized [EBB]_n clusters in the glassy state can hardly stay in the IL phase and they transfer to the IL-water interface due to both electroneutrality and amphiphilicity. Then, the clusters undergo random collision in the interface driven by the Marangoni effect and capillary force thereafter. Finally, a single MA sphere can be formed owing to supramolecular interactions. To our knowledge, this is the first example realizing spontaneous whole-process supramolecular assembly covering microscopic, mesoscopic and macroscopic scales in extraction systems. The concept of multi-scale selectivity (MSS) is therefore suggested and its mechanism is revealed. The selective separation and solidification of metal ions can be realized in a MSSA-based extraction system depending on MSS. In addition, insights into the physicochemical characteristics of ILs from microscopic, mesoscopic to macroscopic scales are provided, and especially, the solvation effect of ILs on the large-sized clusters leading to the phase-splitting is examined. It is quite important that the polarization of uranyl in its complex, the growing of uranyl clusters in an IL as well as the glassy material of uranyl are investigated systematically on the basis of both experiment and theoretical calculations in this work.

Network Analysis Reveals Spatial Clustering and Annotation of Complex Chemical Spaces: Application to Astrochemistry

How are molecules linked to each other in complex systems? In a proof-of-concept study, we have developed the method mol2net (https://zenodo.org/record/7025094) to generate and analyze the molecular network of complex astrochemical data (from high-resolution Orbitrap MS¹ analysis of H₂O:CH₃OH:NH₃ interstellar ice analogs) in a data-driven and unsupervised manner, without any prior knowledge about chemical reactions. The molecular network is clustered according to the initial NH₃ content and unlocked HCN, NH₃, and H₂O as spatially resolved key transformations. In comparison with the PubChem database, four subsets were annotated: (i) saturated C-backbone molecules without N, (ii) saturated N-backbone molecules, (iii) unsaturated C-backbone molecules without N, and (iv) unsaturated N-backbone molecules. These findings were validated with previous results (e.g., identifying the two major graph components as previously described N-poor and N-rich molecular groups) but with additional information about subclustering, key transformations, and molecular structures, and thus, the structural characterization of large complex organic molecules in interstellar ice analogs has been significantly refined.

Molecular Tweezer Based on Perylene and Crown Ether for Selective Recognition of Fullerenes

A molecular tweezer trans-di(perylene-3-ylmethanaminobenzo)-18-crown-6 (DP-18C6) incorporating two perylene subunits in a single crown ether core was designed and synthesized as a host for fullerenes. Through the cooperative effect of the perylene subunits and the crown ether moiety, DP-18C6 can efficiently recognize fullerenes including C₆₀, C₇₀, and C₇₆. ¹H NMR titration and fluorescence titration experiments demonstrated that DP-18C6 can effectively grasp the fullerene molecule to form a 1:1 host-guest complex. Density functional theory calculations revealed the presence of intermolecular π-π interactions between the perylene subunits of DP-18C6 and the fullerene molecule. More importantly, DP-18C6 exhibited remarkably high binding selectivity for higher fullerenes over C₆₀, revealing potential application for the separation of fullerenes by means of host-guest interactions.
