Abstract
Atropisomeric compounds-stereoisomers that arise from the restricted rotation about a single bond-have attracted widespread attention in recent years due to their immense potential for applications in a variety of fields, including medicinal chemistry, catalysis and molecular nanoscience. This increased interest led to the invention of new molecular motors, the incorporation of atropisomers into drug discovery programmes and a wide range of novel atroposelective reactions, including those that simultaneously control multiple stereogenic axes. A diverse set of synthetic methodologies, which can be grouped into desymmetrizations, (dynamic) kinetic resolutions, cross-coupling reactions and de novo ring formations, is available for the catalyst-controlled stereoselective synthesis of various atropisomer classes. In this Review, we generalize the concepts for the catalyst-controlled stereoselective synthesis of atropisomers within these categories with an emphasis on recent advancements and underdeveloped atropisomeric scaffolds beyond stereogenic C(sp2)-C(sp2) axes. We also discuss more complex systems with multiple stereogenic axes or higher-order stereogenicity.

Abstract
1,1'-Binaphthyl-2,2'-diamine (BINAM) is a useful axially chiral compound. The kinetic resolution of BINAM is one of the most crucial methods for synthesizing chiral BINAM. We have developed a chiral calcium phosphate-catalyzed kinetic resolution of BINAM by utilizing an acylation reaction to produce a mono-amide. The kinetic resolution of BINAM derivatives was achieved by using isobutyric anhydride in the presence of chiral calcium phosphate and 4-morpholinopyridine with up to s = 127. 6,6'-Substituted BINAM derivatives were also applicable for this reaction. The resulting mono-acylated BINAM could be transformed into BINAM by hydrolysis under acidic conditions.

Abstract
An efficient catalytic asymmetric Michael-type reaction of azonaphthalenes with 5-aminoisoxazoles has been developed. The reaction was based on the utilization of a chiral phosphoric acid as the catalyst, delivering a large panel of axially chiral heterobiaryl diamines in generally good yields with excellent enantioselectivities. The gram-scale reaction and postmodification of the chiral product demonstrated their potentials in the synthesis of chiral catalysts and ligands. This approach not only provides a useful method for the construction of pentatomic heterobiaryl scaffolds but also offers new members to the axially chiral diamine family with promising applications in synthetic and medicinal chemistry.

Abstract
Axially chiral diaryl ethers are present in numerous natural products and bioactive molecules. However, only few catalytic enantioselective approaches have been established to access diaryl ether atropisomers. Herein, we report the N-heterocyclic carbene-catalyzed enantioselective synthesis of axially chiral diaryl ethers via desymmetrization of prochiral 2-aryloxyisophthalaldehydes with aliphatic alcohols, phenol derivatives, and heteroaromatic amines. This reaction features mild reaction conditions, good functional group tolerance, broad substrate scope and excellent enantioselectivity. The utility of this methodology is illustrated by late-stage functionalization, gram-scale synthesis, and diverse enantioretentive transformations. Control experiments and DFT calculations support the association of NHC-catalyzed desymmetrization with following kinetic resolution to enhance the enantioselectivity.

Abstract
The reaction of the oxygen-bridged frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs) tBu2 P-O-Si(C2 F5 )3 (1) and tBu2 P-O-AlBis2 (2) with azobenzene, promoted by UV irradiation, led to a selective complexation of the cis-isomer. The addition product of 2 is stable, while the adduct of 1 isomerizes in solution in an ortho-benzidine-like [3,3]-rearrangement by cleavage of the N-N bond, saturation of the nitrogen atoms with hydrogen atoms and formation of a new bond between two phenyl ortho-carbon atoms. Similar rearrangements take place with different para-substituted azobenzenes (R=Me, OMe, Cl) and di(2-naphthyl)diazene, while ortho-methylated azo compounds do not form adducts with 1. All adducts were characterized by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy and elemental analyses and the mechanism of the rearrangement was explored by quantum-chemical calculations.

Abstract
We describe an iron-catalyzed asymmetric oxidative C-C coupling of diarylamines which proceeds at room temperature with air as final oxidant. Using hexadecafluorophthalocyanine-iron(II) as catalyst in the presence of catalytic amounts of an axially chiral biaryl phosphoric acid, the resulting chiral 2,2'-diamino-1,1'-biaryls are obtained in up to 90 % ee as confirmed by chiral HPLC. A detailed mechanism has been proposed with a radical cation-chiral phosphate ion pair as key intermediate leading to the observed asymmetric induction.

Abstract
We describe the synthesis and X-ray crystal structure of μ-oxo-bis[(octacosafluoro-meso-tetraphenylporphyrinato)iron(iii)] [(FeTPPF28)2O]. This novel iron complex is an efficient catalyst for oxidative biaryl coupling reactions of diarylamines and carbazoles. The asymmetric oxidative coupling in the presence of an axially chiral biaryl phosphoric acid as co-catalyst provides the 2,2'-bis(arylamino)-1,1'-biaryl in 96% ee. The Wacker-type oxidation of alkenes to the corresponding ketones with (FeTPPF28)2O as catalyst in the presence of phenylsilane proceeds at room temperature with air as the terminal oxidant. For internal and aliphatic alkenes increased ketone/alcohol product ratios were obtained.

Abstract
The synthesis of novel tetrahydroquinoline-containing spirocycles has been achieved through an acid-promoted dearomatization of cyclic diarylhydrazines. The reaction, proceeding through a dearomative o-semidine rearrangement, furnishes a stable, yet reactive spirocyclohexadieniminium ion, which can further be used as an electrophile or a diene in a one-pot sequence. These transformations efficiently produce novel diazaspirocycles and allow for further synthetic elaboration of the cyclohexadienamine products.

Abstract
Molecular conformations induced by the rotation about single bonds play a crucial role in chemical transformations. Revealing the relationship between the conformations of chiral catalysts and the enantiodiscrimination is a formidable challenge due to the great difficulty in isolating the conformers. Herein, we report a chiral catalytic system composed of an achiral catalytically active unit and an axially chiral 1,1'-bi-2-naphthol (BINOL) unit which are connected via a C-O single bond. The two conformers of the catalyst induced by the rotation about the C-O bond, are determined via single-crystal X-ray diffraction and found to respectively lead to the formation of highly important axially chiral 1,1'-binaphthyl-2,2'-diamine (BINAM) and 2-amino-2'-hydroxy-1,1'-binaphthyl (NOBIN) derivatives in high yields (up to 98%), with excellent enantioselectivities (up to 98:2 e.r.) and opposite absolute configurations. The results highlight the importance of conformational dynamics of chiral catalysts in asymmetric catalysis.

Abstract
The axially chiral indole-aryl motifs are present in natural products and biologically active compounds as well as in chiral ligands. Atroposelective indole formation is an efficient method to construct indole-based biaryls. We report herein the result of a chiral phosphoric acid catalyzed asymmetric cycloaddition of 3-alkynylindoles with azonaphthalenes. A class of indole-based biaryls were prepared efficiently with excellent yields and enantioselectivities (up to 98% yield, 99% ee). Control experiment and DFT calculations illustrate a possible mechanism in which the reaction proceeds via a dearomatization of indole to generate an allene-iminium intermediate, followed by an intramolecular aza-Michael addition. This approach provides a convergent synthetic strategy for enantioselective construction of axially chiral heterobiaryl backbones. There is great interest in methods for catalytic enantioselective construction of axially chiral compounds found in natural products. Here, the authors develop a cycloaddition strategy for atroposelective construction of indole-based biaryls via chiral phosphoric acid-catalysed cycloaddition.

Biaryl synthesis continues to occupy a central role in chemical synthesis. From blockbuster drug molecules to organic electronics, biaryls present numerous possibilities and new applications continue to emerge. Transition-metal-catalyzed coupling reactions represent the gold standard for biaryl synthesis and the mechanistic steps, such as reductive elimination, are well established. Developing routes that exploit alternative mechanistic scenarios could give unprecedented biaryl structures and expand the portfolio of biaryl applications. We have developed metal-free C-H/C-H couplings of aryl sulfoxides with phenols to afford 2-hydroxy-2'-sulfanylbiaryls. This cascade strategy consists of an interrupted Pummerer reaction and [3,3] sigmatropic rearrangement. Our method enables the synthesis of intriguing aromatic molecules, including oligoarenes, enantioenriched dihetero[8]helicenes, and polyfluorobiaryls. From our successes in aryl sulfoxide/phenol couplings and a deeper understanding of sigmatropic rearrangements for biaryl synthesis, we have established related methods, such as aryl sulfoxide/aniline and aryl iodane/phenol couplings. Overall, our fundamental interests in underexplored reaction mechanisms have led to various methods for accessing important biaryl architectures.

Abstract
A comprehensive mechanistic investigation was conducted on the coupling reaction of aryl sulfoxides with phenols by using trifluoroacetic anhydride to yield biaryls. NMR experiments revealed that our previously proposed mechanism, which consists of a cascade of an interrupted Pummerer reaction and a rate-determining [3,3] sigmatropic rearrangement, is reasonable. The electronic effects of the substrates were also evaluated to elucidate the nature of the rearrangement step. Based on experimental observations and theoretical calculations, we conclude that the rearrangement is highly asynchronous and stepwise rather than concerted when electron-rich phenols are employed for the reaction.

Abstract
NOBIN and BINAM derivatives harboring biaryl frameworks are recognized as a class of important atropisomers with versatile applications. Here, we present an efficient synthetic route to access such compounds through copper-catalyzed domino arylation of N-arylhydroxylamines or N-arylhydrazines with diaryliodonium salts and [3,3]-sigmatropic rearrangement. This reaction features mild conditions, good substrate compatibility, and excellent efficiency. The practicality of this protocol was further extended by the synthesis of biaryl amino alcohols.

Abstract
Atropisomerism is a stereochemical behavior portrayed by three-dimensional molecules that bear rotationally restricted σ bond. Akin to the well-represented point-chiral molecules, atropisomerically chiral compounds are finding increasing utilities in many disciplines where molecular asymmetry is influential. This provides steady demand on atroposelective synthesis, where numerous synthetic pursuits have been rewarded with conceptually novel and streamlined methods while expanding the structural diversity of atropisomers. This review summarizes key achievements in stereoselective preparation of biaryl, heterobiaryl, and nonbiaryl atropisomers documented between 2015 and 2020. Emphasis is placed on the synthetic strategies for each structural class, while examples are cited to illustrate the potential applications of the accessed atropochiral targets.

Abstract
We disclose a new Brønsted acid promoted quinoline synthesis, proceeding via homo-diaza-Cope rearrangement of N-aryl-N'-cyclopropyl hydrazines. Our strategy can be considered a homologation of Fischer's classical indole synthesis and delivers 6-membered N-heterocycles, including previously inaccessible pyridine derivatives. This approach can also be used as a pyridannulation methodology toward constructing polycyclic polyheteroaromatics. A computational analysis has been employed to probe plausible activation modes and to interrogate the role of the catalyst.

Abstract
Central-to-axial chirality conversion represents a fascinating class of chemical processes consisting of the destruction of stereogenic centers and the simultaneous installation of axial chiral elements, which provides efficient methods for the preparation of axially chiral compounds. Using the strategy, a wide range of axially chiral compounds, including biaryls, heterobiaryls, aromatic amides, allenes and vinyl arenes, have been synthesized with high efficiency and excellent enantioselectivity. In addition, central-to-axial chirality conversion strategy has been applied to the synthesis of natural products. The strategy has undoubtedly become and will continue to be a hot research topic in the field of asymmetric catalysis and synthesis. In this minireview, we selected some examples to introduce the developments and trends in the central-to-axial chirality conversion strategy up to April 2020.

Abstract
Abstract
In the last twenty years, chiral Brønsted acid and chiral counteranion catalysis have emerged as a fundamental area of organocatalysis. The development of chiral acidic catalysts has allowed extending many known Brønsted catalyzed reactions to the stereoselective domain. Moreover, the controlled conditions under which these catalysts can be used, allowed accessing reactivity of increasing complexity with extraordinary selectivity levels. However, compared to the explosion of this branch of organocatalysis in an applicative direction, only little has been done to understand and rationalize the observed reaction outcomes. This is due, in part, to the complex nature of the weak interactions (H-bonds, electrostatic, and dispersion interactions) governing this class of reactions. Here we review relevant mechanistic analyses from both chiral Brønsted acid and chiral counteranion directed catalysis. Both experimental and computational work is included that aimed at unveiling the nature of the interactions governing the a number of reactions. These include the: enantioselective reduction of ketoimines with Hantzsch esters; ring opening reactions of epoxides, oxetanes, aziridinium, and sulfonium ions; stereoselective fluorination of allylic alcohols; oxidative aminations of benzylic thioethers (enantioselective Pummerer reaction). These case studies are analyzed and discussed in order to highlight key features and similarities across the different catalytic systems.

Abstract
A versatile method for atroposelective synthesis of chiral biaryl diamines and amino alcohols has been developed via para-amination of anilines and phenols with azodicarboxylates enabled by chiral phosphoric acid catalysis. Meanwhile, highly efficient kinetic resolution of the racemic biaryl anilines has also been realized through these reactions, giving selectivity factor up to 246. The gram-scale reaction and facile derivatizations of the chiral products well demonstrate the potential of these reactions in the development of novel chiral ligands and catalysts. Abstract
Chiral phosphoric acid (CPA)-catalyzed enantioselective arylation reactions have attracted immense attention recently. However, the preferential activation model in the stereodetermining step is controversial, and hence, the origin of enantioselectivity is still far from being understood. Two stereochemical models are provided on the basis of the asymmetric arylations of iminoquinones with naphthylamines (reaction 1) or naphthols (reaction 2) catalyzed by (R/S)-TRIP to explain the high enantioselectivity and the effect of CPAs scaffolds. Unexpectedly, our calculations reveal that substrate naphthylamines or naphthols prefer enantioselective aminal formation model II or 1,4-addition model I, respectively, which is the reverse of Tan's and Xu's model. The different noncovalent and steric interactions between catalysts and substrates are responsible for the observed model preference. Moreover, the enantioselectivity arises from distortion (reaction 1) and noncovalent interactions (reaction 2) that discriminate between the diastereomeric transition states. We further investigated the effect of SPINOL-based CPAs on the enantioselectivity and found that the more rigid skeleton and a smaller binding pocket lead to lower enantioselectivity as compared with that of BINOL-based CPA. The new insights into the reaction activation model rationalize the stereoselectivity outcome of direct asymmetric arylation reactions, and our general model can be extended to related transformations.

Abstract
Atropisomeric biaryl motifs are ubiquitous in chiral catalysts and ligands. Numerous efficient strategies have been developed for the synthesis of axially chiral biaryls. In contrast, the asymmetric construction of o-quinone-aryl atropisomers has yet to be realized. Inspired by the rapid progress of the chemistry of biaryls, here we present our initial investigations about the atroposelective construction of axially chiral arylquinones by a bifunctional chiral phosphoric acid-catalyzed asymmetric conjugate addition and central-to-axial chirality conversion. With o-naphthoquinone as both the electrophile and the oxidant, three types of arylation counterparts, namely 2-naphthylamines, 2-naphthols and indoles, are utilized to assemble a series of atropisomeric scaffolds in good yields and excellent enantioselectivities. This approach not only expands the axially chiral library but also offers a route to a class of potential, chiral biomimetic catalysts. Axially chiral compounds have widespread use in asymmetric catalysis. Here, the authors disclose a highly enantioselective synthesis of axially chiral o-naphthoquinones by chiral phosphoric acid catalysis and central-to-axial chirality conversion.
