Skeletal Transformations Observed in the Reaction of a Tricyclic Thymine Nucleoside with Dicarbonyl Compounds

Some intriguing skeletal transformations were observed in the reaction of α-hydroxypyrrolidine thymine nucleoside 2 with different dicarbonyl compounds. In these reactions, unusual ring systems, together with new C-C bonds and stereogenic centers of defined configuration, were formed in a single step. These reactions were initiated by the nucleophilic attack of the NH of the pyrrolidine ring, present on 2, on one of the carbonyl moieties of a dicarbonyl reagent and seem to proceed through an enamine-iminium mechanism. The present methodology is particularly attractive because no catalyst or aggressive conditions are needed. The new polycyclic nucleosides obtained from 2 can be good scaffolds for diversification. In fact, modification and derivatization can be achieved by performing further chemical transformations of the functional groups present in some of them. This may lead to the formation of new highly functionalized nucleosides. Our results show the high synthetic potential of 2 to construct complex systems in an efficient way. On the other hand, the enamine chemistry involved in the particular reactivity of the α-hydroxy pyrrolidine ring present in 2 has no connection with the nucleobase and could be extended to simple glycosides preserving this essential ring system.

Photoswitchable Imines Drive Dynamic Covalent Systems to Nonequilibrium Steady States

Coupling a photochemical reaction to a thermal exchange process can drive the latter to a nonequilibrium steady state (NESS) under photoirradiation. Typically, systems use separate motifs for photoresponse and equilibrium-related processes. Here, we show that photoswitchable imines can fulfill both roles simultaneously, autonomously driving a dynamic covalent system into a NESS under continuous light irradiation. We demonstrate this using transimination reactions, where E-to-Z photoisomerism generates a more kinetically labile species. At the NESS, energy is stored both in the metastable Z-isomer of the imine and in the system's nonequilibrium constitution; when the light is switched off, this stored energy is released as the system reverts to its equilibrium state. The system operates autonomously under continuous light irradiation and exhibits characteristics of a light-driven information ratchet. This is enabled by the dual-role of the imine linkage as both the photochromic and dynamic covalent bond. This work highlights the ability and application of these imines to drive systems to NESSs, thus offering a novel approach in the field of systems chemistry.

Key structural features to favour imines over hydrates in water: pyridoxal phosphate as a muse

Imination reactions in water represent a challenge not only because of the high propensity of imines to be hydrolysed but also as a result of the competing hydrate formation through H2O addition to the aldehyde. In the present work we report a successful approach that allows for favouring imitation reactions while silencing hydrate formation. Such remarkable reactivity and selectivity can be attained by fine-tuning the electronic and steric structural features of the ortho-substituents of the carbonyl groups. It resulted from studying the structure-reactivity relationships in a series of condensation reactions between different amines and aldehydes, comparing the results to the ones obtained in the presence of the biologically-relevant pyridoxal phosphate (PLP). The key role of negatively-charged and sterically-crowding units (i.e., sulfonate groups) in disfavouring hydrate formation was corroborated by DFT and steric-hindrance calculations. Furthermore, the best-performing aldehyde leads to higher imine yields, selectivity and stability than those of PLP itself, allowing for the inhibition of a PLP-dependent enzyme (transaminase) through dynamic aldimine exchange. These results will increase the applicability of imine-based dynamic covalent chemistry (DCvC) under physiological conditions and will pave the way for the design of new carbonyl derivatives that might be used in the dynamic modification of biomolecules.

New Insights on the Chemical Origin of Life: The Role of Aqueous Polymerization of N-carboxyanhydrides (NCA)

At the origin, the emergence of proteins was based on crucial prebiotic stages in which simple amino acids-based building blocks spontaneously evolved from the prebiotic soup into random proto-polymers called protoproteins. Despite advances in modern peptide synthesis, these prebiotic chemical routes to protoproteins remain puzzling. We discuss in this perspective how polymer science and systems chemistry are reaching a point of convergence in which simple monomers called N-carboxyanhydrides would be able to form such protoproteins via the emergence of a protometabolic cycle involving aqueous polymerization and featuring macromolecular Darwinism behavior.

Host-Guest Stimuli-Responsive Click Chemistry

Click chemistry has reached its maturity as the weapon of choice for the irreversible ligation of molecular fragments, with over 20 years of research resulting in the development or improvement of highly efficient kinetically controlled conjugation reactions. Nevertheless, traditional click reactions can be disadvantageous not only in terms of efficiency (side products, slow kinetics, air/water tolerance, etc.), but also because they completely avoid the possibility to reversibly produce and control bound/unbound states. Recently, non-covalent click chemistry has appeared as a more efficient alternative, in particular by using host-guest self-assembled systems of high thermodynamic stability and kinetic lability. This review discusses the implementation of molecular switches in the development of such non-covalent ligation processes, resulting in what we have termed stimuli-responsive click chemistry, in which the bound/unbound constitutional states of the system can be favored by external stimulation, in particular using host-guest complexes. As we exemplify with handpicked selected examples, these supramolecular systems are well suited for the development of human-controlled molecular conjugation, by coupling thermodynamically regulated processes with appropriate temporally resolved extrinsic control mechanisms, thus mimicking nature and advancing our efforts to develop a more function-oriented chemical synthesis.

Aromatic-Carbonyl Interactions as an Emerging Type of Non-Covalent Interactions

Aromatic-carbonyl (Ar···C═O) interactions, attractive interactions between the arene plane and the carbon atom of carbonyl, are in the infancy as one type of new supramolecular bonding forces. Here the study and functionalization of aromatic-carbonyl interactions in solution is reported. A combination of aromatic-carbonyl interactions and dynamic covalent chemistry provided a versatile avenue. The stabilizing role and mechanism of arene-aldehyde/imine interactions are elucidated through crystal structures, NMR studies, and computational evidence. The movement of imine exchange equilibria further allowed the quantification of the interplay between arene-aldehyde/imine interactions and dynamic imine chemistry, with solvent effects offering another handle and matching the electrostatic feature of the interactions. Moreover, arene-aldehyde/imine interactions enabled the reversal of kinetic and thermodynamic selectivity and sorting of dynamic covalent libraries. To show the functional utility diverse modulation of fluorescence signals is realized with arene-aldehyde/imine interactions. The results should find applications in many aspects, including molecular recognition, assemblies, catalysis, and intelligent materials.

Sustainable Supramolecular Polymers

Polymer waste is a pressing issue that requires innovative solutions from the scientific community. As a beacon of hope in addressing this challenge, the concept of sustainable supramolecular polymers (SSPs) emerges. This article discusses challenges and efforts in fabricating SSPs. Addressing the trade-offs between mechanical performance and sustainability, the ultra-tough and multi-recyclable supramolecular polymers are fabricated via tailoring mismatched supramolecular interactions. Additionally, the healing of kinetically inert polymer materials is realized through transient regulation of the interfacial reactivity. Furthermore, a possible development trajectory for SSPs is proposed, and the transient materials can be regarded as the next generation in this field. The evolution of SSPs promises to be a pivotal stride towards a regenerative economy, sparking further exploration and innovation in the realm of sustainable materials.

Highly robust supramolecular polymer networks crosslinked by a tiny amount of metallacycles

Supramolecular polymeric materials have exhibited attractive features such as self-healing, reversibility, and stimuli-responsiveness. However, on account of the weak bonding nature of most noncovalent interactions, it remains a great challenge to construct supramolecular polymeric materials with high robustness. Moreover, high usage of supramolecular units is usually necessary to promote the formation of robust supramolecular polymeric materials, which restrains their applications. Herein, we describe the construction of highly robust supramolecular polymer networks by using only a tiny amount of metallacycles as the supramolecular crosslinkers. A norbornene ring-opening metathesis copolymer with a 120° dipyridine ligand is prepared and self-assembled with a 60° or 120° Pt(II) acceptor to fabricate the metallacycle-crosslinked polymer networks. With only 0.28 mol% or less pendant dipyridine units to form the metallacycle crosslinkers, the mechanical properties of the polymers are significantly enhanced. The tensile strengths, Young's moduli, and toughness of the reinforced polymers reach up to more than 20 MPa, 600 MPa, and 150 MJ/m3, respectively. Controllable destruction and reconstruction of the metallacycle-crosslinked polymer networks are further demonstrated by the sequential addition of tetrabutylammonium bromide and silver triflate, indicative of good stimuli-responsiveness of the networks. These remarkable performances are attributed to the thermodynamically stable, but dynamic metallacycle-based supramolecular coordination complexes that offer strong linkages with good adaptive characteristics.

Generalist versus Specialist Self-Replicators

Darwinian evolution, including the selection of the fittest species under given environmental conditions, is a major milestone in the development of synthetic living systems. In this regard, generalist or specialist behavior (the ability to replicate in a broader or narrower, more specific food environment) are of importance. Here we demonstrate generalist and specialist behavior in dynamic combinatorial libraries composed of a peptide-based and an oligo(ethylene glycol) based building block. Three different sets of macrocyclic replicators could be distinguished based on their supramolecular organization: two prepared from a single building block as well as one prepared from an equimolar mixture of them. Peptide-containing hexamer replicators were found to be generalists, i. e. they could replicate in a broad range of food niches, whereas the octamer peptide-based replicator and hexameric ethyleneoxide-based replicator were proven to be specialists, i. e. they only replicate in very specific food niches that correspond to their composition. However, sequence specificity cannot be demonstrated for either of the generalist replicators. The generalist versus specialist nature of these replicators was linked to their supramolecular organization. Assembly modes that accommodate structurally different building blocks lead to generalist replicators, while assembly modes that are more restrictive yield specialist replicators.

Chemistry plays a central role in science and is the basis of one of the major, more impactful, and diverse industries. However, to address the most pressing global challenges, we must learn to create connections in an effective and meaningful way, with other disciplines, industries, and society at large. Here, we present the IUPAC Top Ten Emerging Technologies in Chemistry as an example of an initiative that highlights the value of the most promising advances in chemistry and contributes to creating connections to accelerate sustainable solutions for our society and our planet.

Triple Adaptation of Constitutional Dynamic Networks of Imines in Response to Micellar Agents: Internal Uptake-Interfacial Localization-Shape Transition

Understanding the behavior of complex chemical reaction networks and how environmental conditions can modulate their organization as well as the associated outcomes may take advantage of the design of related artificial systems. Microenvironments with defined boundaries are of particular interest for their unique properties and prebiotic significance. Dynamic covalent libraries (DCvLs) and their underlying constitutional dynamic networks (CDNs) have been shown to be appropriate for studying adaptation to several processes, including compartmentalization. However, microcompartments (e.g., micelles) provide specific environments for the selective protection from interfering reactions such as hydrolysis and an enhanced chemical promiscuity due to the interface, governing different processes of network modulation. Different interactions between the micelles and the library constituents lead to dynamic sensing, resulting in different expressions of the network through pattern generation. The constituents integrated into the micelles are protected from hydrolysis and hence preferentially expressed in the network composition at the cost of constitutionally linked members. In the present work, micellar integration was observed for two processes: internal uptake based on hydrophobic forces and interfacial localization relying on attractive electrostatic interactions. The latter drives a complex triple adaptation of the network with feedback on the shape of the self-assembled entity. Our results demonstrate how microcompartments can enforce the expression of constituents of CDNs by reducing the hydrolysis of uptaken members, unravelling processes that govern the response of reactions networks. Such studies open the way toward using DCvLs and CDNs to understand the emergence of complexity within reaction networks by their interactions with microenvironments.

Emergence of Dynamic Instability by Hybridizing Synthetic Self-Assembled Dipeptide Fibers with Surfactant Micelles

Supramolecular chemistry currently faces the challenge of controlling nonequilibrium dynamics such as the dynamic instability of microtubules. In this study, we explored the emergence of dynamic instability through the hybridization of peptide-type supramolecular nanofibers with surfactant micelles. Using real-time confocal imaging, we discovered that the addition of micelles to nanofibers induced the simultaneous but asynchronous growth and shrinkage of nanofibers during which the total number of fibers decreased monotonically. This dynamic phenomenon unexpectedly persisted for 6 days and was driven not by chemical reactions but by noncovalent supramolecular interactions between peptide-type nanofibers and surfactant micelles. This study demonstrates a strategy for inducing autonomous supramolecular dynamics, which will open up possibilities for developing soft materials applicable to biomedicine and soft robotics.

Smart Hydrogels for Tissue Regeneration

The rapid growth in the portion of the aging population has led to a consequent increase in demand for biomedical hydrogels, together with an assortment of challenges that need to be overcome in this field. Smart hydrogels can autonomously sense and respond to the physiological/pathological changes of the tissue microenvironment and continuously adapt the response according to the dynamic spatiotemporal shifts in conditions. This along with other favorable properties, make smart hydrogels excellent materials for employing toward improving the precision of treatment for age-related diseases. The key factor during the smart hydrogel design is on accurately identifying the characteristics of natural tissues and faithfully replicating the composition, structure, and biological functions of these tissues at the molecular level. Such hydrogels can accurately sense distinct physiological and external factors such as temperature and biologically active molecules, so they may in turn actively and promptly adjust their response, by regulating their own biological effects, thereby promoting damaged tissue repair. This review summarizes the design strategies employed in the creation of smart hydrogels, their response mechanisms, as well as their applications in field of tissue engineering; and concludes by briefly discussing the relevant challenges and future prospects.

Complexation-driven assembly of imine-linked helical receptors showing adaptive folding and temperature-dependent guest selection

The development of synthetic receptors capable of selectively binding guests with diverse structures and multiple functional groups poses a significant challenge. Here, we present the efficient assembly of foldamer-based receptors for monosaccharides, utilising the principles of complexation-induced equilibrium shifting and adaptive folding. Diimine 4 can be quantitatively assembled from smaller components when D-galactose is added as a guest among monosaccharides we examined. During this assembly, dual complexation-induced equilibrium shifts toward both the formation of diimine 4 and the conversion of D-galactose into α-D-galactofuranose are observed. Diimine 6 is quantitatively assembled in the presence of two different guests, methyl β-D-glucopyranoside and methyl β-D-galactopyranoside, resulting in the formation of two dimeric complexes: (6-MP)2⊃(methyl β-D-glucopyranoside)2 and (6-MM)2⊃(methyl β-D-galactopyranoside∙2H2O)2, respectively. These two complexes exhibit distinct folding structures with domain-swapping cavities depending on the bound guest and temperature. Interestingly, (6-MM)2⊃(methyl β-D-galactopyranoside∙2H2O)2 is exclusively formed at lower temperatures, while (6-MP)2⊃(methyl β-D-glucopyranoside)2 is only formed at higher temperatures.

Supramolecular Polymers: Inherently Dynamic Materials

ConspectusSince its inception in the early 1990s, the field of supramolecular polymers (SPs) has grown into an interdisciplinary field of chemistry. It expanded from the self-assembly of molecular building blocks based on H-bonding into the realm of complex dynamic material, encompassing both supramolecular noncovalent and molecular covalent regimes. It has paved the path for a more diverse field of research into a new class of polymeric materials, coined dynamic polymers or dynamers. Dynamers are bringing a paradigm shift not only in material science research but also in a broad field of applications from self-healing materials to biocompatible polymeric materials. The present Account presents the evolution of supramolecular polymer chemistry from simple linear polymeric chains to complex dynamic polymers imparting novel functional properties, such as component exchange and self-healing. We explore how SPs led to materials of increasing complexity, starting from simple main-chain polymers to the formation of more complex columnar SPs and lateral SPs. The field has experienced three partially overlapping periods. The main goal was first the generation of polymeric entities from various molecular components connected through noncovalent interactions, especially complementary hydrogen bonding recognition patterns as well as stacked columnar SPs. Thereafter, attention was directed in parallel to the exploration of the properties of SPs and their applications as novel materials. In a third period, the dynamic properties of supramolecular polymers were explored, taking advantage of the lability of noncovalent interactions to perform component rearrangement and exchange. We illustrate how the field of SPs has emerged as a multidisciplinary field of chemistry, biology, and materials science with selected examples from the literature. The SPs, specifically dynamic owing to their inherent reversibility, also pave the path to easier sorting and recycling, as desired in the plastics industry.One of the biggest challenges that the plastics industry is facing today is the end-of-life fate of plastics. Plastics that cannot be recycled end up in landfills or are improperly disposed of in rivers and oceans, polluting and damaging the environmental balance irreversibly. Dynamic polymeric materials presenting inherent dynamicity could pave the way for addressing this long-standing challenge of nonrecyclability of plastics. Dynamers formed via noncovalent interactions or reversible covalent bonds can be broken into components that could be easily recycled and reused. Therefore, dynamers could play a pivotal role toward closing the loop for the plastics industry and provide a solution to an elusive circular economy with plastics being an integral part.

Cell-Like Synthetic Supramolecular Soft Materials Realized in Multicomponent, Non-/Out-of-Equilibrium Dynamic Systems

Living cells are complex, nonequilibrium supramolecular systems capable of independently and/or cooperatively integrating multiple bio-supramolecules to execute intricate physiological functions that cannot be accomplished by individual biomolecules. These biological design strategies offer valuable insights for the development of synthetic supramolecular systems with spatially controlled hierarchical structures, which, importantly, exhibit cell-like responses and functions. The next grand challenge in supramolecular chemistry is to control the organization of multiple types of supramolecules in a single system, thus integrating the functions of these supramolecules in an orthogonal and/or cooperative manner. In this perspective, the recent progress in constructing multicomponent supramolecular soft materials through the hybridization of supramolecules, such as self-assembled nanofibers/gels and coacervates, with other functional molecules, including polymer gels and enzymes is highlighted. Moreover, results show that these materials exhibit bioinspired responses to stimuli, such as bidirectional rheological responses of supramolecular double-network hydrogels, temporal stimulus pattern-dependent responses of synthetic coacervates, and 3D hydrogel patterning in response to reaction-diffusion processes are presented. Autonomous active soft materials with cell-like responses and spatially controlled structures hold promise for diverse applications, including soft robotics with directional motion, point-of-care disease diagnosis, and tissue regeneration.

Hierarchical Mechanical Transduction of Precision-Engineered DNA Hydrogels with Sacrificial Bonds

Engineering the response to external signals in mechanically switchable hydrogels is important to promote smart materials applications. However, comparably little attention has focused on embedded precision mechanisms for autonomous nonlinear response in mechanical profiles in hydrogels, and we lack understanding of how the behavior from the molecular scale transduces to the macroscale. Here, we design a nonlinear stress-strain response into hydrogels by engineering sacrificial DNA hairpin loops into model network hydrogels formed from star-shaped building blocks. We characterize the force-extension response of single DNA hairpins and are able to describe how the specific topology influences the nonlinear mechanical behavior at different length scales. For this purpose, we utilize force spectroscopy as well as microscopic and macroscopic deformation tests. This study contributes to a better understanding of designing nonlinear strain-adaptive features into hydrogel materials.

Entropy-Enthalpy Compensation in Solvent Geometry Regulated Supramolecular Polymerization of Luminescent Napthalimide via a Non-Cooperative, Isodesmic Mechanism

Supramolecular polymers of π-conjugated systems are an important class of materials with fascinating functions and properties originated from the dynamic behavior and highly ordered molecular organizations. Here, a donor-π-acceptor based functionalized luminescent napthalene monoimide (NMI) undergoes J-type self-assembly by non-covalent interactions via a non-cooperative, isodesmic mechanism to form supramolecular 1D nanowire. The fundamental insights into the thermodynamics regulating the supramolecular polymerization were derived through the fitting of the isodesmic model to variable temperature UV/Vis data in linear (dodecane) and nonliner hydrocarbon (decalin) based solvents. This shows a significant role of entropy-enthalpy compensation in solvent geometry-regulated formation and stabilization of supramolecular polymer. Furthermore, we have quantitively estimated the influence of solvent geometry and found that NMI forms stronger self-assembly and spontaneous gel in linear hydrocarbon based solvent compared to nonliner one and thereby substantially increases the degree of polymerization in linear hydrocarbon solvent (dodecane). This is accredited to the effective influence of the linear hydrocarbon solvent molecules in the polymerization process by favourable van der waals interactions with the peripheral alkyl chains of the NMI monomers in contrast to unfavourable interaction of nonliner hydrocarbon solvent due to geometry mismatch.

Graphene oxide-based large-area dynamic covalent interfaces

Dynamic materials, being capable of reversible structural adaptation in response to the variation of external surroundings, have experienced significant advancements in the past several decades. In particular, dynamic covalent materials (DCMs), where the dynamic covalent bonds (DCBs) can reversibly break and reform under defined conditions, present superior dynamic characteristics, such as self-adaptivity, self-healing and shape memory. However, the dynamic characteristics of DCBs are mainly limited within the length scale of covalent bonds, due to the local position exchange or the inter-distance variation between the chemical compositions involved in the reversible covalent reactions. In this minireview, a discussion regarding the realization of long-range migration of chemical compositions along the interfaces of graphene oxide (GO)-based materials via the spatially connected and consecutive occurrence of DCB-based reversible covalent reactions is presented, and the interfaces are termed "large-area dynamic covalent interfaces (LDCIs)". The effective strategies, including water adsorption, interfacial curvature and metal-substrate support, as well as the potential applications of LDCIs in water dissociation and humidity sensing are summarized. Additionally, we also give an outlook on potential strategies to realize LDCIs on other 2D carbon-based materials, including the interfacial morphology and periodic element doping. This minireview provides insights into the realization of LDCIs on a wider range of 2D materials, and offers a theoretical perspective for advancing materials with long-range dynamic characteristics and improved performance, including controlled drug delivery/release and high-efficiency (bio)sensing.

Behavior of a Dynamic Covalent Library Driven by Combined Pd(II) and Biphasic Effectors for Metal Transport between Phases

This work reports the effect of Pd(II) as chemical effector on an acylhydrazone-based dynamic covalent library (DCL) in biphasic systems (water/chloroform). The constituents of the DCL are self-built and distributed in the two phases, two of them are lipophilic enough to play the role of a carrier agent that may transfer Pd(II) from the aqueous phase to the organic phase. Upon addition of Pd(II), the DCL of components exhibits a strong amplification of the constituent that is the most adapted to stabilize Pd(II) in chloroform as well as its agonist in water. This evolution is driven by the combination of the interaction of the DCL with Pd(II) and the presence of the two phases. This study paves the way to a novel approach for liquid/liquid extraction and metal recovery by means of adaptive extractant species generated in situ by a DCL.

Dual reactivity based dynamic covalent chemistry: mechanisms and applications

Dynamic covalent chemistry (DCC) focuses on the reversible formation, breakage, and exchange of covalent bonds and assemblies, setting a bridge between irreversible organic synthesis and supramolecular chemistry and finding wide utility. In order to enhance structural and functional diversity and complexity, different types of dynamic covalent reactions (DCRs) are placed in one vessel, encompassing orthogonal DCC without crosstalk and communicating DCC with a shared reactive functional group. As a means of adding tautomers, widespread in chemistry, to interconnected DCRs and combining the features of orthogonal and communicating DCRs, a concept of dual reactivity based DCC and underlying structural and mechanistic insights are summarized. The manipulation of the distinct reactivity of structurally diverse ring-chain tautomers allows selective activation and switching of reaction pathways and corresponding DCRs (C-N, C-O, and C-S) and assemblies. The coupling with photoswitches further enables light-mediated formation and scission of multiple types of reversible covalent bonds. To showcase the capability of dual reactivity based DCC, the versatile applications in dynamic polymers and luminescent materials are presented, paving the way for future functionalization studies.

Supramolecular multivalency effects enhance imine formation in aqueous medium allowing for dynamic modification of enzymatic activity

Imine formation under physiological conditions represents a challenging reaction due to the strong propensity of aldimines to be hydrolyzed. Herein we disclose the remarkable effect of supramolecular multivalency on increasing imine stability. A family of reactive aldehydes was synthesized bearing supramolecularly-active sites within their structure. The imine formation activity for such aldehydes was evaluated and compared with model aldehydes. The reaction of the best-performing species - containing two carboxylate groups-with a set of amines showed a significant decrease in imine yields as the degree of supramolecular multivalency between sidechains decreased. The reversible conjugation of amino acid derivatives and small peptides was also assayed, with excellent selectivities for the imine formation at the Nα position even in substrates containing competing sites. Preliminary results on protein bioconjugation revealed that a model enzyme could be dynamically inhibited upon reaction with the aldehyde, with its native activity being recovered by displacing the imine bonds with a suitable chemical effector (i.e., acylhydrazide).

Anion-assisted supramolecular polymerization of luminescent organic π-conjugated chromophores in a moderately polar solvent: tunable nanostructures and their corresponding effects on electronic properties

Supramolecular polymers of π-conjugated organic chromophores have emerged as promising candidates in organic electronics because of their dynamic and highly ordered molecular organization. Herein, we demonstrate the formation of luminescent, highly conducting supramolecular polymers of a functionalized naphthalimide π-chromophore-based organic semiconductor in a moderately polar organic solvent (tetrahydrofuran) by overcoming solute-solvent H-bonding via assistance from fluoride anions. The polymerization is exclusively guided by the synergistic effects of cascade H-bonding (F-⋯H-N- of primary amines, followed by -CO⋯H-N- of amides), π-π stacking and hydrophobic interactions. An increasing molar equivalent of anions leads to a morphology transition from 1D nanowires to 2D nanosheets via nanotubes and nanorings, but above a particular threshold of the same anion, depolymerization-mediated disruption of long-range order and formation of non-luminescent spherical particles was observed. Such significant impacts of anions in supramolecular polymerization-depolymerization were utilized in modulating the electronic properties of this naphthalimide-based organic semiconductor.

Selective Detection of Erythrocytes with QCMs-ABO Blood Group Typing

Blood transfusion, as well as organ transplantation, is only possible after prior blood group (BG) typing and crossmatching. The most important blood group system is that of Landsteiner's ABO classification based on antigen presence on the erythrocyte surfaces. A mass sensitive QCM (quartz crystal microbalance) sensor for BG typing has been developed by utilizing molecular imprinting technology. Polyvinylpyrrolidone (crosslinked with N,N-methylenebisacrylamide) is a favorable coating that was imprinted with erythrocytes of different blood groups. In total, 10 MHz quartz sheets with two resonators, one for MIP (molecularly imprinted polymer) and the other for NIP (non-imprinted polymer) were fabricated and later used for mass-sensitive measurements. The structure of erythrocyte imprints resembles a donut, as identified by AFM (atomic force microscope). All the erythrocytes of the ABO system were chosen as templates and the responses to these selective coatings were evaluated against all blood groups. Each blood group can be characterized by the pattern of responses in an unambiguous way. The results for blood group O are remarkable given that all types of erythrocytes give nearly the same result. This can be easily understood as blood group O does not possess neither antigen A nor antigen B. The responses can be roughly related to the number of respective antigens on the erythrocyte surface. The imprints generate hollows, which are used for reversible recognition of the erythrocytes. This procedure is based on molecular recognition (based on supramolecular strategies), which results from size, shape and enthalpic interactions between host and guest molecules.

A study across scales to unveil microstructural regimes in the multivalent metal driven self-assembly of cellulose nanocrystals

Understanding the behaviour of self-assembled systems, from nanoscale building blocks to bulk materials, is a central theme for the rational design of high-performance materials. Herein, we revealed, at different length scales, how the self-assembly of TEMPO-oxidised cellulose nanocrystals (TOCNCs) into rod fractal gels is directed by the complexation of Fe3+ ions on the surface of colloidal particles. Different specificities in Fe3+ binding on the TOCNC surface and conformational changes of the nanocellulose chain were unveiled by paramagnetic NMR spectroscopy. The macroscopic properties of systems presenting different concentrations of TOCNCs and Fe3+ ions were investigated by rheology and microscopy, demonstrating the tunability of the self-assembly of cellulose nanorods driven by Fe3+ complexation. Near-atomistic coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations were developed to gain microscopic insight into the behaviour of this colloidal system. We found that the formation of different self-assembled architectures is driven by metal-nanocellulose complexation combined with the attenuation of electrostatic repulsion and water structuration around cellulose, leading to different microstructural regimes, from isolated nanorods to disconnected rod fractal clusters and rod fractal gels. These findings lay the foundation to unlock the full potential of cellulose nanocrystals as sustainable building blocks to develop self-assembled materials with defined structural control for a range of advanced applications.

Photoswitchable dynamic conjugate addition-elimination reactions as a tool for light-mediated click and clip chemistry

Phototriggered click and clip reactions can endow chemical processes with high spatiotemporal resolution and sustainability, but are challenging with a limited scope. Herein we report photoswitchable reversible covalent conjugate addition-elimination reactions toward light-addressed modular covalent connection and disconnection. By coupling between photochromic dithienylethene switch and Michael acceptors, the reactivity of Michael reactions was tuned through closed-ring and open-ring forms of dithienylethene, allowing switching on and off dynamic exchange of a wide scope of thiol and amine nucleophiles. The breaking of antiaromaticity in transition states and enol intermediates of addition-elimination reactions provides the driving force for photoinduced change in kinetic barriers. To showcase the versatile application, light-mediated modification of solid surfaces, regulation of amphiphilic assemblies, and creation/degradation of covalent polymers on demand were achieved. The manipulation of dynamic click/clip reactions with light should set the stage for future endeavors, including responsive assemblies, biological delivery, and intelligent materials.

Emergence of Cooperative Glucose-Binding Networks in Adaptive Peptide Systems

Minimalistic peptide-based systems that bind sugars in water are challenging to design due to the weakness of interactions and required cooperative contributions from specific amino-acid side chains. Here, we used a bottom-up approach to create peptide-based adaptive glucose-binding networks by mixing glucose with selected sets of input dipeptides (up to 4) in the presence of an amidase to enable in situ reversible peptide elongation, forming mixtures of up to 16 dynamically interacting tetrapeptides. The choice of input dipeptides was based on amino-acid abundance in glucose-binding sites found in the protein data bank, with side chains that can support hydrogen bonding and CH-π interactions. Tetrapeptide sequence amplification patterns, determined through LC-MS analysis, served as a readout for collective interactions and led to the identification of optimized binding networks. Systematic variation of dipeptide input revealed the emergence of two networks of non-covalent hydrogen bonding and CH-π interactions that can co-exist, are cooperative and context-dependent. A cooperative binding mode was determined by studying the binding of the most amplified tetrapeptide (AWAD) with glucose in isolation. Overall, these results demonstrate that the bottom-up design of complex systems can recreate emergent behaviors driven by covalent and non-covalent self-organization that are not observed in reductionist designs and lead to the identification of system-level cooperative binding motifs.

Tailorable and Biocompatible Supramolecular-Based Hydrogels Featuring two Dynamic Covalent Chemistries

Dynamic covalent chemistry (DCC) has proven to be a valuable tool in creating fascinating molecules, structures, and emergent properties in fully synthetic systems. Here we report a system that uses two dynamic covalent bonds in tandem, namely disulfides and hydrazones, for the formation of hydrogels containing biologically relevant ligands. The reversibility of disulfide bonds allows fiber formation upon oxidation of dithiol-peptide building block, while the reaction between NH-NH₂ functionalized C-terminus and aldehyde cross-linkers results in a gel. The same bond-forming reaction was exploited for the "decoration" of the supramolecular assemblies by cell-adhesion-promoting sequences (RGD and LDV). Fast triggered gelation, cytocompatibility and ability to "on-demand" chemically customize fibrillar scaffold offer potential for applying these systems as a bioactive platform for cell culture and tissue engineering.

Solvent-Responsive Reversible and Controllable Conversion between a Polyimine Membrane and an Organic Molecule Cage

Adaptive bionic self-correcting behavior offers an attractive property for chemical systems. Here, based on the dynamic feature of imine formation, we propose a solvent-responsive strategy for smart switching between an amorphous ionic polyimine membrane and a crystalline organic molecule cage without the addition of other building blocks. To adapt to solvent environmental constraints, the aldehyde and amine components undergo self-correction to form a polymer network or a molecular cage. Studies have shown that the amorphous film can be switched in acetonitrile to generate a discrete cage with bright birefringence under polarized light. Conversely, the membrane from the cage crystal conversion can be regained in ethanol. Such a membrane-cage interconversion can be cycled continuously at least 5 times by switching the two solvents. This work builds a bridge between the polymer network and crystalline molecules and offers prospects for smart dynamic materials.

Fluorescence by self-assembly: autofluorescent peptide vesicles and fibers

A series of oxidized cysteinyl peptides ([P-Cys-X-OMe]₂; P = Boc or H; X = Trp or Glu) showed vesicular and fibrillar assemblies. The anatomy of the self-assembled vesicles from the water-soluble cystine peptide [Cys-Trp-OMe]₂ (1a) has been investigated by using various fluorescent probes such as ammonium 8-anilinonaphthalene-1-sulfonate, Nile Red and pyrene. The morphological characterization was carried out by fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM) and super resolution-structured illumination microscopy (SR-SIM) utilizing the autofluorescence of the vesicles stemming from the self-assembly. The self-assembled structures are also observed in solution as evident from the quantitative phase images obtained using a dual-mode digital holographic microscope (DHM) system. Present investigations show that the self-assembly is enthalpy- and entropy-driven in the aqueous medium. Based on the CD spectral studies, we proposed that 1a organizes into vesicles through the sequestration of indole units. We observed that the solutions of dipeptides 1a-b exhibit autofluorescence in the blue region upon excitation at a wavelength >350 nm. Detailed spectroscopic studies on the peptides lacking tryptophan 2a-b unequivocally showed that the autofluorescence stems exclusively from peptide aggregation. Our experimental results with appropriate controls revealed that the clustering of carbonyl chromophores is central to autofluorescence. Autofluorescence was also used to probe the vesicle formation without using any external fluorescent probe. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on autofluorescent vesicles formed by the spontaneous association of dipeptides. We also found that the vesicles formed by 1a can act as a host for guests like C₆₀. The biocompatibility and biodegradability of these peptides along with the autofluorescent nature and guest binding ability of peptide-based vesicles offer numerous applications in the biomedical area.

Real-time Observation of Macroscopic Helical Morphologies under Optical Microscope: A Curious Case of π-π Stacking Driven Molecular Self-assembly of an Organic Gelator Devoid of Hydrogen Bonding

Supramolecular assemblies such as tubules/helix/double helix/helical tape etc. are usually submicron objects preventing direct observation under optical microscope. Chiral-pure form of these assemblies is important for potential applications. Herein, we report a rare phenomenon wherein a DMSO gel of a simple terpyridine derivative [(4-CNPhe)4PyTerp] produced macroscopic helical morphologies (μm length scale) which could be observed under optical microscope, formation of which could be monitored by optical videography, stable enough to withstand acidic vapour, robust enough to display reversible gel↔sol in response to acidic and ammonia vapour and sturdy enough to be maneuvered with a needle. These properties appeared to be unique to the title compound as the other related derivatives failed to display such assembly structures. SXRD and MD simulation studies suggested that weak interactions (π-π stacking) played a crucial role in the self-assembly process.

Transient self-assembly of metal-organic complexes

Implementing transient processes in networks of dynamic molecules holds great promise for developing new functional behaviours. Here we report that trichloroacetic acid can be used to temporarily rearrange networks of dynamic imine-based metal complexes towards new equilibrium states, forcing them to express complexes otherwise unfavourable in their initial equilibrium states. Basic design principles were determined for the creation of such networks. Where a complex distribution of products was obtained in the initial equilibrium state of the system, the transient rearrangement temporarily yielded a simplified output, forcing a more structured distribution of products. Where a single complex was obtained in the initial equilibrium state of the system, the transient rearrangement temporarily modified the properties of this complex. By doing so, the mechanical properties of an helical macrocyclic complex could be temporarily altered by rearranging it into a [2]catenane.

Adaptive insertion of a hydrophobic anchor into a poly(ethylene glycol) host for programmable surface functionalization

Covalent and non-covalent molecular binding are two strategies to tailor surface properties and functions. However, the lack of responsiveness and requirement for specific binding groups makes spatiotemporal control challenging. Here, we report the adaptive insertion of a hydrophobic anchor into a poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) host as a non-covalent binding strategy for surface functionalization. By using polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons as the hydrophobic anchor, hydrophilic charged and non-charged functional modules were spontaneously loaded onto PEG corona in 2 min without the assistance of any catalysts and binding groups. The thermodynamically favourable insertion of the hydrophobic anchor can be reversed by pulling the functional module, enabling programmable surface functionalization. We anticipate that the adaptive molecular recognition between the hydrophobic anchor and the PEG host will challenge the hydrophilic understanding of PEG and enhance the progress in nanomedicine, advanced materials and nanotechnology.

Nonlinear Effects in Asymmetric Catalysis by Design: Concept, Synthesis, and Applications

Asymmetric synthesis constitutes a key technology for the preparation of enantiomerically pure compounds as well as for the selective control of individual stereocenters in the synthesis of complex compounds. It is thus of extraordinary importance for the synthesis of chiral drugs, dietary supplements, flavors, and fragrances, as well as novel materials with tunable and reconfigurable chiroptical properties or the assembly of complex natural products. Typically, enantiomerically pure catalysts are used for this purpose. To prepare enantiomerically pure ligands or organocatalysts, one can make use of the natural chiral pool. Ligands and organocatalysts with an atropisomeric biphenyl and binaphthyl system have become popular, as they are configurationally stable and contain a C2-symmetric skeleton, which has been found to be particularly privileged. For catalysts with opposite configurations, both product enantiomers can be obtained. Configurationally flexible biphenyl systems initially appeared to be unsuitable for this purpose, as they racemize after successful enantiomer separation and thus are neither storable nor afford a reproducible enantioselectivity. However, there are strategies that exploit the dynamics of such ligands to stereoconvergently enrich one of the catalyst enantiomers. This can be achieved, for example, by coordinating an enantiomerically pure additive to a ligand-metal complex, which results in deracemization of the configurationally flexible biphenyl system, thereby enriching the thermodynamically preferred diastereomer. In this Account, we present our strategy to design stereochemically flexible catalysts that combine the properties of supramolecular recognition, stereoconvergent alignment, and catalysis. Such systems are capable to recognize the chirality of the target product, leading to an increase in enantioselectivity during asymmetric catalysis. We have systematically developed and investigated these smart catalyst systems and have found ways to specifically design and synthesize them for various applications. In addition to (i) reaction product-induced chiral amplification, we have developed systems with (ii) intermolecular and (iii) intramolecular recognition, and successfully applied them in asymmetric catalysis. Our results pave the way for new applications such as temperature-controlled enantioselectivity, controlled inversion of enantioselectivity with the same chirality of the recognition unit, generation of positive nonlinear effects, and targeted design of autocatalytic systems through dynamic formation of transient catalysts. Understanding such systems is of enormous importance for catalytic processes leading to symmetry breaking and amplification of small imbalances of enantiomers and offer a possible explanation of homochirality of biological systems. In addition, we are learning how to target supramolecular interactions to enhance enantioselectivities in asymmetric catalysis through secondary double stereocontrol. Configurationally flexible catalysts will enable future resource-efficient development of asymmetric syntheses, as enantioselectivities can be fully switched by stereoselective alignment of the stereochemically flexible ligand core on demand.

Organo-macrocycle-containing hierarchical metal-organic frameworks and cages: design, structures, and applications

Developing hierarchical ordered systems is challenging. Using organo-macrocycles to construct metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and porous coordination cages (PCCs) provides an efficient way to obtain hierarchical assemblies. Macrocycles, such as crown ethers, cyclodextrins, calixarenes, cucurbiturils, and pillararenes, can be incorporated within MOFs/PCCs and they also endow the resultant composites with enhanced properties and functionalities. This review summarizes recent developments of organo-macrocycle-containing hierarchical MOFs/PCCs, emphasizing applications and structure-property relationships of these hierarchically porous materials. This review provides insights for future research on hierarchical self-assembly using macrocycles as building blocks and functional ligands to extend the applications of the composites.

Anion-assisted amidinium exchange and metathesis

Dynamic covalent chemistry has become an invaluable tool for the design and preparation of adaptable yet robust molecular systems. Herein we explore the scope of a largely overlooked dynamic covalent reaction - amidinium exchange - and report on conditions that allow formal amidinium metathesis reactions.

Switchable and dynamic G-quadruplexes and their applications

G-Quadruplexes attract growing interest as functional constituents in biology, chemistry, nanotechnology, and material science. In particular, the reversible dynamic reconfiguration of G-quadruplexes provides versatile means to switch DNA nanostructures, reversibly control catalytic functions of DNA assemblies, and switch material properties and functions. The present review article discusses the switchable dynamic reconfiguration of G-quadruplexes as central functional and structural motifs that enable diverse applications in DNA nanotechnology and material science. The dynamic reconfiguration of G-quadruplexes has a major impact on the development of DNA switches and DNA machines. The integration of G-quadruplexes with enzymes yields supramolecular assemblies exhibiting switchable catalytic functions guided by dynamic G-quadruplex topologies. In addition, G-quadruplexes act as important building blocks to operate constitutional dynamic networks and transient dissipative networks mimicking complex biological dynamic circuitries. Furthermore, the integration of G-quadruplexes with DNA nanostructures, such as origami tiles, introduces dynamic and mechanical features into these static frameworks. Beyond the dynamic operation of G-quadruplex structures in solution, the assembly of G-quadruplexes on bulk surfaces such as electrodes or nanoparticles provides versatile means to engineer diverse electrochemical and photoelectrochemical devices and to switch the dynamic aggregation/deaggregation of nanoparticles, leading to nanoparticle assemblies that reveal switchable optical properties. Finally, the functionalization of hydrogels, hydrogel microcapsules, or nanoparticle carriers, such as SiO₂ nanoparticles or metal-organic framework nanoparticles, yields stimuli-responsive materials exhibiting shape-memory, self-healing, and controlled drug release properties. Indeed, G-quadruplex-modified nanomaterials find growing interest in the area of nanomedicine. Beyond the impressive G-quadruplex-based scientific advances achieved to date, exciting future developments are still anticipated. The review addresses these goals by identifying the potential opportunities and challenges ahead of the field in the coming years.

Remarkably enhanced dynamic oxygen migration on graphene oxide supported by copper substrate

The dynamic covalent properties of graphene oxide (GO) are of fundamental interest to a broad range of scientific areas and technological applications. It remains a challenge to access feasible dynamic reactions for reversibly breaking/reforming the covalent bonds of oxygen functional groups on GO, although these reactions can be induced by photonic or mechanical routes, or mediated by adsorbed water. Here, using density functional theory calculations, we demonstrate the remarkably enhanced dynamic oxygen migration along the basal plane of GO supported by copper substrate (GO@copper), with C-O bond breaking reactions and proton transfer between neighboring epoxy and hydroxyl groups. Compared to reactions on GO, the energy barriers of oxygen migrations on GO@copper are sharply reduced to be less than or comparable to thermal fluctuations, and meanwhile the crystallographic match between GO and copper substrate induces new oxygen migration paths on GO@copper. This work sheds light on understanding of the metal substrate-enhanced dynamic properties of GO, and evidences the strategy to tune the activity of two-dimensional-interfacial oxygen groups for various potential applications.

Temporal Stimulus Patterns Drive Differentiation of a Synthetic Dipeptide-Based Coacervate

The fate of living cells often depends on their processing of temporally modulated information, such as the frequency and duration of various signals. Synthetic stimulus-responsive systems have been intensely studied for >50 years, but it is still challenging for chemists to create artificial systems that can decode dynamically oscillating stimuli and alter the systems' properties/functions because of the lack of sophisticated reaction networks that are comparable with biological signal transduction. Here, we report morphological differentiation of synthetic dipeptide-based coacervates in response to temporally distinct patterns of the light pulse. We designed a simple cationic diphenylalanine peptide derivative to enable the formation of coacervates. The coacervates concentrated an anionic methacrylate monomer and a photoinitiator, which provided a unique reaction environment and facilitated light-triggered radical polymerization─even in air. Pulsed light irradiation at 9.0 Hz (but not at 0.5 Hz) afforded anionic polymers. This dependence on the light pulse patterns is attributable to the competition of reactive radical intermediates between the methacrylate monomer and molecular oxygen. The temporal pulse pattern-dependent polymer formation enabled the coacervates to differentiate in terms of morphology and internal viscosity, with an ultrasensitive switch-like mode. Our achievements will facilitate the rational design of smart supramolecular soft materials and are insightful regarding the synthesis of sophisticated chemical cells.

Teaching an Old Compound New Tricks: Reversible Transamidation in Maleamic Acids

Dynamic combinatorial chemistry is a method widely used for generating responsive libraries of compounds, with applications ranging from chemical biology to materials science. It relies on dynamic covalent bonds that are able to form in a reversible manner in mild conditions, and therefore requires the discovery of new types of these bonds in order to progress. Amides, due to their high stability, have been scarcely used in this field and typically require an external catalyst or harsh conditions for exchange. Compounds able to undergo uncatalysed transamidation at room temperature are still rare exceptions. In this work, we describe reversible amide formation and transamidation in a class of compounds known as maleamic acids. Due to the presence of a carboxylic acid in β-position, these compounds are in equilibrium with their anhydride and amine precursors in organic solvents at room temperature. First, we show that this equilibrium is responsive to external stimuli: by alternating the additions of a Brønsted acid and a base, we can switch between amide and anhydride several times without side-reactions. Next, we prove that this equilibrium provides a pathway for reversible transamidation without any added catalyst, leading to thermodynamic distributions of amides at room temperature. Lastly, we use different preparation conditions and concentrations of Brønsted acid to access different library distributions, easily controlling the transition between kinetic and thermodynamic regimes. Our results show that maleamic acids can undergo transamidation in mild conditions in a reversible and tunable way, establishing them as a new addition to the toolbox of dynamic combinatorial chemistry.

Kinetic and energetic insights into the dissipative non-equilibrium operation of an autonomous light-powered supramolecular pump

Natural and artificial autonomous molecular machines operate by constantly dissipating energy coming from an external source to maintain a non-equilibrium state. Quantitative thermodynamic characterization of these dissipative states is highly challenging as they exist only as long as energy is provided. Here we report on the detailed physicochemical characterization of the dissipative operation of a supramolecular pump. The pump transduces light energy into chemical energy by bringing self-assembly reactions to non-equilibrium steady states. The composition of the system under light irradiation was followed in real time by ¹H NMR for four different irradiation intensities. The experimental composition and photon flow were then fed into a theoretical model describing the non-equilibrium dissipation and the energy storage at the steady state. We quantitatively probed the relationship between the light energy input and the deviation of the dissipative state from thermodynamic equilibrium in this artificial system. Our results provide a testing ground for newly developed theoretical models for photoactivated artificial molecular machines operating away from thermodynamic equilibrium.

Cucurbituril-Based Supramolecular Assemblies: Prospective on Drug Delivery, Sensing, Separation, and Catalytic Applications

Precise control over the stimuli-responsive noncovalent interactions operative in a complex molecular system has emerged as a convenient way to realize applications in the detection and sensing of trace analytes, metal ion separation, uptake-release, in situ nanoparticle synthesis, and catalytic activity. This feature article focuses on the attributes and advantages of noncovalent host-guest interactions involving cucurbituril homologues (CBs) with a wide range of organic and inorganic guests, starting from organic dyes to drugs, proteins, surfactants, metal ions, and polyoxometalates. The unique structural features of CBs provide interaction sites for cations at the portals, polyanions at the periphery, and hydrophobic groups in its cavity. The facile complexation and consequent compositional and geometrical arrangements of guests such as naphthalenediimides, coumarins, porphyrins, and triphenylpyrylium ions with the host CBs led to remarkable changes in many molecular properties, especially aggregation, the proton binding and release affinity, and novel emissive dimers, and each of such spectroscopic signatures have been appropriately channeled to drug delivery and activation to improve the antibacterial efficacy and shelf life of drugs by increasing their photostability. Several technological advantages have also been extracted from the interaction of CBs with inorganic guests as well. The interaction of CB7 with the heptamolybdate anion resulted in the precipitation of a hybrid complex material which enabled a convenient separation methodology for the use of clinically pure radioactive ^99mTc in diagnostic applications. Certain cucurbituril-based hybrid materials have been developed for enhanced SO₂ adsorption at low pressures, high-efficiency hydrogen production, and reversible catalytic systems. Thus, this feature article provides a glimpse of the vast potential of cucurbituril homologues with organic and inorganic guests and calls for a dedicated effort to explore supramolecular strategies for better sensors, therapeutics, smart drug delivery modules, and facile devices.

Chiral gelators for visual enantiomeric recognition

Introduction of chirality in supramolecular gels has allowed the effective translation and amplification of molecular chirality. Upon integrating the stimuli-responsive nature of these gels with supramolecular chirality, a new platform for the discrimination of the enantiomeric guests through naked eye can be developed. Over the past decade, several groups have reported the development of chiral supramolecular gels for enantioselective recognition through gel formation or collapse. However, to the best of our knowledge, we are yet to come across a review highlighting the utilization of chiral supramolecular gels for macroscopic discrimination of enantiomers. In this article, we have articulated the chiral gelators developed to date for the recognition of different enantiomeric analytes focusing on their mode of recognition with an in-depth analysis of the mechanism of interactions assisting the recognition process.

Emerging Two-Dimensional Tellurene and Tellurides for Broadband Photodetectors

As with all stylish 2D functional materials, tellurene and tellurides possessing excellent physical and chemical properties such as high environmental stability, tunable narrow bandgap, and lower thermal conductivity, have aroused the great interest of the researchers. These properties of such materials also form the basis for relatively newfangled scholarly fields involving advanced topics, especially for broadband photodetectors. Integrating the excellent properties of many 2D materials, tellurene/telluride-based photodetectors show great flexibility, higher frequency response or faster time response, high signal-to-noise ratio, and so on, which make them leading the frontier of photodetector research. To fully understand the excellent properties of tellurene/tellurides and their optoelectronic applications, the recent advances in tellurene/telluride-based photodetectors are maximally summarized. Benefiting from the solid research in this field, the challenges and opportunities of tellurene/tellurides for future optoelectronic applications are also discussed in this review, which might provide possibilities for the realization of state-of-the-art high-performance tellurene/telluride-based devices.

Spatiotemporal dynamics of supramolecular polymers by in situ quantitative catalyst-free hydroamination

Implementing chemical reactivity into synthetic supramolecular polymers based on π-conjugated molecules has been of great interest to create functional materials with spatiotemporal dynamic properties. However, the development of an in situ chemical reaction within supramolecular polymers is still in its infancy, because one needs to design optimal π-conjugated monomers having excellent reactivity under mild conditions possibly without byproducts or a catalyst. Herein we report the synthesis of a supramolecular polymer based on ethynyl core-substituted naphthalenediimide (S-NDI2) molecules that react with various amines quantitatively in a nonpolar solvent, without a catalyst, at 298 K. Most interestingly, the in situ reaction of the S-NDI2 supramolecular polymer with a linear aliphatic diamine proceeded much faster than the homogeneous reaction of a monomeric naphthalenediimide with the same diamine, affording diamine-linked S-NDI2 oligomers and polymers. The acceleration of in situ hydroamination was presumably due to rapid intra-supramolecular cross-linking between ethynyl and amino groups fixed in close proximity within the supramolecular polymer. Such intra-supramolecular cross-linking did not occur efficiently with an incompatible diamine. The systematic kinetic studies of in situ catalyst-free hydroamination within supramolecular polymers provide us with a useful, facile and versatile tool kit for designing dynamic supramolecular polymeric materials based on electron-deficient π-conjugated monomers.
