Semiconductive Nanotube Array Constructed from Giant [PbII 18 I54 (I2 )9 ] Wheel Clusters

Nanotube Structure of AsPS4-xSex (x = 0, 1)

Single-wall nanotubes of isostructural AsPS4-xSex (x = 0, 1) are grown from solid-state reaction of stoichiometric amounts of the elements. The structure of AsPS4 was determined using single-crystal X-ray diffraction and refined in space group P 1 ¯ . The infinite, single-walled AsPS4 nanotubes have an outer diameter of ≈1.1 nm and are built of corner-sharing PS4 tetrahedra and AsS3 trigonal pyramids. Each nanotube is nearly hexagonal, but the ≈3.4 Å distance between S atoms on adjacent nanotubes allows them to easily slide past one another, resulting in the loss of long-range order. Substituting S with Se disrupted the crystallization of the nanotubes, resulting in amorphous products that precluded the determination of the structure for AsPS3Se. 31P solid-state NMR spectroscopy indicated a single unique tetrahedral P environment in AsPS4 and five different P environments all with different degrees of Se substitution in AsPS3Se. Optical absorption spectroscopy revealed an energy band gap of 2.7 to 2.4 eV for AsPS4 and AsPS3Se, respectively. Individual AsPS4 microfibers showed a bulk conductivity of 3.2 × 10-6 S/cm and a negative photoconductivity effect under the illumination of light (3.06 eV) in ambient conditions. Thus, intrinsic conductivity originates from hopping through empty trap states along the length of the AsPS4 nanotubes.

In Situ Chiral Template Approach to Synthesize Homochiral Lead Iodides for Second-Harmonic Generation

Homochiral halide perovskites have gained increasing attention because of their fascinating optoelectronic properties and prospective applications in laser technologies. However, the limited choice of chiral organic templates severely restricts their structural diversity and second-harmonic generation (SHG) effects. Here, we present an in situ chiral template approach for the synthesis of one-dimensional (1D) homochiral lead iodides. A chiral imine (L-ipp) template was generated in situ by reacting L-proline (L-pro) and acetone under ambient conditions. Notably, L-ipp can cooperate with L-pro to direct the formation of a homochiral lead iodide with dual chiral templates, which is unprecedented in crystalline metal halides. The homochiral lead iodide containing both L-ipp and L-pro shows a strong SHG response of 8.0 times that of KH2 PO4 (8.0×KDP). The SHG efficiency is one of the largest values reported to date for any homochiral lead halides under 1064 nm laser irradiation. A comparative study shows that homochiral 1D lead iodides containing either L-ipp or L-pro exhibit relatively weak SHG responses (≤1.0×KDP). This work demonstrates the advantage of using two different chiral templates over a single chiral template in enhancing the SHG responses of halide materials.

Three Semiconductive 1D Naphthalene Diimide/Iodoplumbate Perovskites with High Moisture Tolerance and Long-Lived Charge Separation States

Low-dimensional inorganic-organic hybrid perovskites with high moisture tolerance and long-lived charge separation states have captured significant attention in the field of optoelectronic devices. To further achieve the relationship between crystal structures and stability, as well as charge separation behaviors, three one-dimensional hybrid perovskites containing electron-deficient naphthalene diimide ammonium (NDIEA) and electron-rich iodoplumbate chains, [(H₂NDIEA)Pb₂I₆]·2DMF (1), [(H₂NDIEA)₂Pb₅I₁₄·(DMF)₂]·4DMF (2), and [(HNDIEA)₂Pb₂I₆]·3H₂O (3), were synthesized. Crystal structure determinations revealed various synthesis conditions leading to different stacking modes, especially the inorganic lead iodide fraction, which resulted in different water resistances and charge-separated behaviors. The comprehensive analysis found that strong intermolecular interactions (anion-π interactions and π-π interactions), and matching energy levels between protonated NDIEA and iodoplumbate chains, can facilitate the generation of long-lived charge separation states and extraordinary moisture stability, even in the water environment. In addition, the conductivity behavior of 3 was also explored in detail.

Interpenetration of Donor-Acceptor Hybrid Frameworks for Highly Sensitive Thermal Sensors

Donor-acceptor (D-A) alignment that integrates D-A pairs into the modular and versatile crystalline metal-organic frameworks is a powerful strategy to precisely fabricate multifunctional materials with unique optoelectronic properties and applications at the molecular level. Herein, we reported an unprecedented threefold interpenetrating D-A hybrid framework by incorporating an electron-deficient linear viologen zwitterion into the lead-halide systems. The 1D iodoplumbate nanoribbon and interpenetrating close-packed D-A structure endowed this hitherto unknown semiconductive alignment with the anisotropic conductivity and high stability. When used in a thermal sensor, it presented exceptional electrical properties with a high sensitivity (high thermal index B of 4671 K) and decent temperature coefficient of resistivity (0.72% °C^-1) in wide operational temperature ranges (40-220 °C), which are among the best of the related thermistors. This work develops a pathway to bridge the gaps between hybrid materials and electron devices.

Two Giant Calixarene-Like Polyoxoniobate Nanocups {Cu12 Nb120 } and {Cd16 Nb128 } Built from Mixed Macrocyclic Cluster Motifs

Cup-shaped molecules are of great interest due to their appealing architectures and properties. Compared with widely studied calixarenes, polyoxometalate-based cup-shaped molecules currently remain a virgin land waiting for exploration. In this work, we report the first discovery of two giant cup-shaped inorganic-organic hybrid polyoxoniobates (PONbs) of {Cu₁₂ Nb₁₂₀ } and {Cd₁₆ Nb₁₂₈ }. The former integrates three tricyclic Nb₂₄ clusters and a hexacyclic Nb₄₈ cluster into a cup-shaped molecule via a Cu₁₂ metallacalixarene, while the latter unifies two tricyclic Nb₂₄ clusters and a brand-new pentacyclic Nb₄₀ cluster into another cup-shaped molecule via a hybrid Cd₁₆ unit. With 132 and 144 metal centers, {Cu₁₂ Nb₁₂₀ } and {Cd₁₆ Nb₁₂₈ } show the largest two inorganic-organic hybrid PONbs known to date.

A chalcogenide-cluster-based semiconducting nanotube array with oriented photoconductive behavior

The interesting physical and chemical properties of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have prompted the search for diverse inorganic nanotubes with different compositions to expand the number of available nanotechnology applications. Among these materials, crystalline inorganic nanotubes with well-defined structures and uniform sizes are suitable for understanding structure-activity relationships. However, their preparation comes with large synthetic challenges owing to their inherent complexity. Herein, we report the example of a crystalline nanotube array based on a supertetrahedral chalcogenide cluster, K₃[K(Cu₂Ge₃Se₉)(H₂O)] (1). To the best of our knowledge, this nanotube array possesses the largest diameter of crystalline inorganic nanotubes reported to date and exhibits an excellent structure-dependent electric conductivity and an oriented photoconductive behavior. This work represents a significant breakthrough both in terms of the structure of cluster-based metal chalcogenides and in the conductivity of crystalline nanotube arrays (i.e., an enhancement of ~4 orders of magnitude).

Amino acid-templated zinc phosphites: low-dimensional structures, fluorescence, and nonlinear optical properties

Two new zinc phosphites were prepared using the amino acid alanine as a structure-directing agent. They have tubular and ladder-like structures, exhibiting blue fluorescence upon UV light irradiation. Notably, the tubular structure is unprecedented in metal phosphite systems. The compound is a nonlinear optically active solid with a second-harmonic generation efficiency of about 1.2 times that of KH2PO4 (KDP).

Broadband Photoresponsive Bismuth Halide Hybrid Semiconductors Built with π-Stacked Photoactive Polycyclic Viologen

Photoresponse ranges of commercially prevailing photoelectric semiconductors, typically Si and InGaAs, are far from fully covering the whole solar spectrum (∼295-2500 nm), resulting in insufficient solar energy conversion or narrow wave bands for photoelectric detection. Recent studies have shown that infinite π-aggregation of viologen radicals can provide semiconductors with a photoelectric response range covering the solar spectrum. However, controlled assembly of an infinite π-aggregate is still a great challenge in material design. Through directional self-assembly of electron-transfer photoactive polycyclic ligands, two crystalline inorganic-organic hybrid photochromic viologen-based bismuth halide semiconductors, ((Me)₃pytpy)[BiCl₆]·2H₂O [1; (Me)₃pytpy = N,N',N″-trimethyl-2,4,6-tris(4-pyridyl)pyridine] and ((Me)₃pytpy)[Bi₂Cl₉]·H₂O (2), have been synthesized. They represent the first series of pytpy-based photochromic compounds. After photoinduced coloration, the conductivities of both 1 and 2 increased. The radical products have electron absorption bands in the range of 200-1600 nm, exceeding that of Si. Both the conductivity and the photocurrent intensity of 2 are stronger than those of 1, due to better planarity, tighter π-stacking, and higher degrees of overlap of ((Me)₃pytpy)³⁺ cations. This study not only provides a new design idea for synthesizing radical-based multispectral photoelectric semiconductors but also enriches the family of electron-transfer photochromic compounds.

Ion-exchange-induced MAPbI3 thin-film 3D–2D and 3D–1D conversions: unveiling structural transformations in films via synergistic and competitive approaches

Transition-Metal-Complex-Directed Synthesis of Hybrid Iodoargentates with Single-Crystal to Single-Crystal Structural Transformation and Photocatalytic Properties

We synthesized and characterized three types of isostructural iodoargentates, [TM(phen)₃]Ag₂I₄·3DMF (TM = Co (1), Ni (2), Zn (3)), [TM(phen)₃]Ag₃I₅·DMF (TM = Co (4), Ni (5), Zn (6)), and [TM(phen)₃]₂Ag₈I₁₂·7DMF (TM = Co (7), Ni (8), Zn (9)) (phen = 1,10-phenanthroline, DMF = dimethylformamide) using transition-metal (TM) complexes as the structure-directing agents. Compounds 1-3 and compounds 4-6 feature zero-dimensional anionic [Ag₄I₈]^4- and [Ag₆I₁₀]^4- clusters, respectively. All of the [TM(phen)₃]²⁺ cations in compounds 1-6 are arranged into a two-dimensional (2D) (6,3) net layer. Interestingly, compounds 1-3 are kinetically unstable in the mother solution, and they can be converted to compounds 4-6 via irreversible single-crystal to single-crystal transformation processes, respectively, with distinct changes in the crystal morphology and structure. Compounds 7-9 feature one-dimensional (1D) zigzag chains constructed from [Ag₈I₁₂]^4- units. The UV-vis diffuse reflectance measurements demonstrate that compounds 1-9 possess the characteristics of semiconductors with band gaps of 2.58-2.71 eV and visible-light-irradiation-induced photocatalytic activities. Especially, compound 3 possesses higher photocatalytic degradation activity toward crystal violet (CV) and rhodamine B (RhB) in comparison to P25 under identical conditions. Moreover, the mechanism study reveals that the TM complex cations make a great contribution to the photocatalytic activity.

Luminescent Thermochromic Silver Iodides as Wavelength-Dependent Thermometers

Luminescent thermochromic materials with a dramatic shift of emission band under different temperatures are highly desirable in temperature sensing fields. However, the design of the synthesis of such compounds remains a great challenge. In this work, two new luminescent thermochromic silver iodides, (emIm)Ag₃I₄ (1) and (emIm)Ag₂I₃ (2) (emIm = 1-ethyl-3-methyl imidazole), have been synthesized under solvothermal conditions. Compound 1 features a [Ag₃I₄]^- anionic layer, while compound 2 possesses an infinite [Ag₂I₃]^- chain structure, both of which are charge balanced by emIm⁺ cations. Particularly, they display luminescent thermochromism with a significant wavelength shift of emission maximum with temperature change. They represent rare examples of infinite layered or chain silver iodides that show luminescent thermochromism. Furthermore, the results indicate that compounds 1 and 2 are promising wavelength-dependent luminescent thermometers.

Metal-organic tube or layered assembly: reversible sheet-to-tube transformation and adaptive recognition

Rational preparation of an adaptive cavity-like enzyme is a great challenge for chemists. Herein, a new self-assembly strategy for the rational preparation of metal-organic tubes with nano-channels has been developed; both 1D metal-organic tube and corresponding 2D layered assemblies can be selectively synthesized driven by different templates; reversible sheet-to-tube transformation can be realized and the key intermediate has been identified. Furthermore, the newly formed nano-channel displays excellent polarity-selectivity for encapsulation of guest molecules, and can be further expanded or contracted through guest-driven adaptive deformation; even induced by very similar guest molecules, the adaptive deformations can also be obviously distinguished. Finally, the key chemicals benzene/hexane with a similar size can also be effectively separated by such nano-channels in the liquid phase. Our work not only provides a new synthetic strategy for the rational synthesis of metal-organic tubes with a reversible sheet-to-tube transformation character, but also gives a potential method for the construction of adaptive host-like enzymes and an in-depth understanding of the nature of adaptive host and guest molecules.

Semiconducting crystalline inorganic-organic hybrid metal halide nanochains

One-dimensional (1D) inorganic-organic metal halide hybrids at the molecular level, which can be considered as arrays of nanochains isolated by organic components, have shown remarkable optical and electric properties. This review summarizes their reported structural types and shows how to modify their band gaps and optical and electric properties.

Hybrid iodoplumbates with metal complexes: syntheses, crystal structures, band gaps and photoelectric properties

With the in situ-generated [Pb(MCP)₄]²⁺ (HMCP⁺ = 1-methyl-4-(carboxyl)pyridinium) or [M(phen)₃]²⁺ (M = Co, Fe and Ni; phen = 1,10-phenanthroline) complexes as structural directing agents and charge-balancing ions, we solvothermally synthesized and structurally characterized four new organic-inorganic hybrid iodoplumbates. Compound K₂[Pb(MCP)₄]Pb₃I₁₀ (1) represents the first K⁺ and [Pb(MCP)₄]²⁺ co-templated hybrid haloplumbate, and exhibits a curve-like anionic layer of [Pb₃I₁₀]_n^4n-. Compounds [M(phen)₃]Pb₂I₆·CH₃CN (M = Co (2), Fe (3) and Ni (4)) have isostructural phases, and feature a one-dimensional (1D) [Pb₂I₆]_n^2n- anionic chain characteristic of pyramid-like [PbI₅] units. The optical property studies show that compounds 1-4 exhibit semiconductor behaviors with the band gaps of 1.98-2.68 eV. In addition, the title compounds exhibited interesting photoelectrical responsive properties, with the photocurrent density in the order of 1 > 3 > 2 > 4. The thermal stabilities of the title compounds 1-4, as well as the theoretical band structure and density of states (DOS) of compounds 1 and 2 have also been studied.

Organic cation directed one-dimensional cuprous halide compounds: syntheses, crystal structures and photoluminescence properties

In recent years, organic-inorganic hybrid metal halides have emerged as a highly promising class of semiconducting light emitting diodes (LEDs) due to their fascinating photoluminescence properties. Here, by specifically selecting different organic cations as templates, a series of new hybrid cuprous halides have been solvothermally prepared, namely [Me-Py]CuI₂ (1), [(Me)₂-DABCO]Cu₂I₄ (2), [Me-MePy]Cu₂I₃ (3), and [H₂DABCO]Cu₃X₅ (X = I (4) and Br (5)). These hybrid cuprous halides feature one-dimensional (1D) [CuI₂]^-, [Cu₂I₃]^- and [Cu₃X₅]^2- (X = Br, I) chains surrounded and charge-balanced by organic cations. Under UV photoexcitation, these hybrid cuprous halides exhibit strong tunable photoluminescence from cyan (480 nm) to red (675 nm) emissions with large Stokes shifts (345 nm). The intrinsic nature of PL emissions is also investigated based on temperature-dependent PL emission, lifetime, photoluminescence quantum efficiencies, etc.

Self-template Synthesis of Metal Halide Perovskite Nanotubes as Functional Cavities for Tailored Optoelectronic Devices

Intriguing optoelectronic features of low-dimensional perovskites drive researchers to develop novel nanostructures for exploring new photophysical properties and meeting the requirements of future practical applications. Here, we report the facile and universal synthesis of metal halide perovskite nanotubes (NTs) in a micro alkylammonium emulsion system for the first time. The [PbBr₆]^4--based NTs with a diameter of 300 nm and length of 100 μm were synthesized through the reaction of PbBr₂ and long-chain bromide in advance, which can be controllably converted into general metal halide perovskite APbBr₃ (A = Cs, FA, MA) with preserved tubular morphology by introducing the Cs⁺, MA⁺, and FA⁺ cations. Importantly, the NTs can readily couple with other nanofillers exhibiting tunable and novel optoelectronic properties demonstrated by the photodetectors. The device performance can be significantly improved and broadened to infrared photoresponse through the introduction of Au nanocrystal (NC) plasma and PbS NCs, respectively. These results demonstrate that the metal halide perovskite NTs are expected to enrich the diversity of nanostructures and have a huge potential in the fabrication of integrated, light-manipulated, and miniaturized electronic and photonic devices.

PbX2(OOCMMIm) (X = Cl, Br): photoluminescent organic-inorganic hybrid lead halide compounds with high proton conductivity

Two-Dimensional Hybrid Halide Perovskites: Principles and Promises

Hybrid halide perovskites have become the "next big thing" in emerging semiconductor materials, as the past decade witnessed their successful application in high-performance photovoltaics. This resurgence has encompassed enormous and widespread development of the three-dimensional (3D) perovskites, spearheaded by CH₃NH₃PbI₃. The next generation of halide perovskites, however, is characterized by reduced dimensionality perovskites, emphasizing the two-dimensional (2D) perovskite derivatives which expand the field into a more diverse subgroup of semiconducting hybrids that possesses even higher tunability and excellent photophysical properties. In this Perspective, we begin with a historical flashback to early reports before the "perovskite fever", and we follow this original work to its fruition in the present day, where 2D halide perovskites are in the spotlight of current research, offering characteristics desirable in high-performance optoelectronics. We approach the evolution of 2D halide perovskites from a structural perspective, providing a way to classify the diverse structure types of the materials, which largely dictate the unusual physical properties observed. We sort the 2D hybrid halide perovskites on the basis of two key components: the inorganic layers and their modification, and the organic cation diversity. As these two heterogeneous components blend, either by synthetic manipulation (shuffling the organic cations or inorganic elements) or by application of external stimuli (temperature and pressure), the modular perovskite structure evolves to construct crystallographically defined quantum wells (QWs). The complex electronic structure that arises is sensitive to the structural features that could be in turn used as a knob to control the dielectric and optical properties the QWs. We conclude this Perspective with the most notable achievements in optoelectronic devices that have been demonstrated to date, with an eye toward future material discovery and potential technological developments.

A Novel Family of Polyiodo-Bromoantimonate(III) Complexes: Cation-Driven Self-Assembly of Photoconductive Metal-Polyhalide Frameworks

In the presence of different cations, reactions of [SbBr₆ ]^3- and I₂ result in a new family of diverse supramolecular 1D polyiodide-bromoantimonate networks. The coordination number of Sb, as well as geometry of assembling {I_x }^n- polyhalide units, can vary, resulting in unprecedented structural types. The nature of I⋅⋅⋅Br interactions was studied by DFT calculations; estimated energy values are 1.6-6.9 kcal mol^-1 . Some of the compounds showed strong photoconductivity in thin films, suggesting multiple feasible applications in optoelectronics and solar energy conversion.

Construction of a bicontinuous donor-acceptor hybrid material at the molecular level by inserting inorganic nanowires into porous MOFs

Herein, we report an unprecedented hybrid structure of electron-rich iodoplumbate nanowires precisely inserted into the periodic pores of electron-deficient pyridinium metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first example of semiconductive MOFs in situ loaded with inorganic semiconductive nanowires via a simple self-assembly method. Due to the dissimilar semiconductivities between the host and guest components, this hybrid also represents the first bicontinuous donor-acceptor hybrid at the molecular level based on host-guest interactions.

Do alkyl groups on aromatic or aliphatic structure directing agents affect water stabilities and properties of hybrid iodoargentates?

Two types of in situ formed structure directing agents (SDAs) including aromatic triphenylphosphine (PPh₃)- and aliphatic piperazine (H₂pp)-derivative cations were used to synthesize five new hybrid iodoargentates, namely (EtPPh₃)Ag₃I₄ (1, Et = ethyl), (n-PrPPh₃)Ag₃I₄ (2, n-Pr = n-propyl), (i-PrPPh₃)Ag₅I₆ (3, i-Pr = isopropyl), (Me₄pp)_0.5AgI₂ (4, Me = methyl), and (H₃app)₂(Ag₂I₆)·2I·2H₂O (5, app = N-aminoethylpiperazine). A comparative study of the two types of SDAs on the structures, stabilities and properties of hybrid iodoargentates was performed in detail. Structurally, except for (EtPPh₃)⁺ and (n-PrPPh₃)⁺, which both directly form (Ag₃I₄)^- anionic chains in 1 and 2, three SDAs generate hybrid iodoargentates different from each other with inorganic anions ranging from a 0-D (Ag₂I₆)^4- dimer to 1-D α-type (AgI₂)^- and (Ag₅I₆)^- chains. With regard to the electronic structures, aromatic PPh₃-derivative cations make noticeable contributions to the bottom of the conduction bands, while aliphatic pp-derivative cations make nearly no contribution to the frontier orbitals, clearly indicating their different ways to adjust the band gaps. With regard to stability, the decomposition temperatures of 1-3 in the range of 324-349 °C are noticeably higher than the values of 217 and 225 °C for 4 and 5. Furthermore, 1-4 exhibit good water stabilities, which is ascribed to the alkylation reactions precluding the formation of strong hydrogen bonds between alkylated SDAs and extraneous H₂O molecules. Contrarily, the presence of typical hydrophilic [double bond, length as m-dash]NH₂⁺, [triple bond, length as m-dash]NH⁺ and -NH₃⁺ groups on the protonated (H₃app)³⁺ cation makes 5 sensitive to water and a hydrolysis reaction occurs to generate a cubic AgI phase. Finally, 1-3 exhibit high photocatalytic efficiencies for the degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) dye in wastewater under visible light. All conclusions obtained here will help a lot in the synthesis of stable functional metal halide-based hybrids.

Electrophilic-Nucleophilic Dualism of Nickel(II) toward Ni···I Noncovalent Interactions: Semicoordination of Iodine Centers via Electron Belt and Halogen Bonding via σ-Hole

The nitrosoguanidinate complex [Ni{NH═C(NMe₂)NN(O)}₂] (1) was cocrystallized with I₂ and sym-trifluorotriiodobenzene (FIB) to give associates 1·2I₂ and 1·2FIB. Structures of these solid species were studied by XRD followed by topological analysis of the electron density distribution within the framework of Bader's approach (QTAIM) at the M06/DZP-DKH level of theory and Hirshfeld surface analysis. Our results along with inspection of XRD (CCDC) data, accompanied by the theoretical calculations, allowed the identification of three types of Ni···I contacts. The Ni···I semicoordination of the electrophilic nickel(II) center with electron belt of I₂ was observed in 1·2I₂, the metal-involving halogen bonding between the nucleophilic nickel(II)-d_z² center and σ-hole of iodine center was recognized and confirmed theoretically in the structure of [FeNi(CN)₄(IPz)(H₂O)]_n (IPz = 4-N-coordinated 2-I-pyrazine), whereas the arrangement of FIB in 1·2FIB provides a boundary case between the semicoordination and the halogen Ni···I bondings. In 1·2I₂ and 1·2FIB, noncovalent interactions were studied by variable temperature XRD detecting the expansion of noncovalent contacts with preservation of covalent bond lengths upon the temperature increase from 100 to 300 K. The nature and energies of all identified types of the Ni···I noncovalent interactions in the obtained (1·2I₂ and 1·2FIB) and in the previously reported ([FeNi(CN)₄(IPz)(H₂O)]_n, [NiL₂](I₃)₂·2I₂ (L = o-phenylene-bis(dimethylphosphine), [NiL]I₂ (L = 1,4,8,11-tetra-azacyclotetradecane), Ni(en)₂]_n[AgI₂]_2n (en = ethylenediamine), and [NiL](ClO₄) (L = 4-iodo-2-((2-(2-(2-pyridyl)ethylsulfanyl)ethylimino)methyl)-phenolate)) structures were studied theoretically. The estimated strengths of these Ni···I noncovalent contacts vary from 1.6 to 4.1 kcal/mol and, as expected, become weaker on heating. This work is the first emphasizing electrophilic-nucleophilic dualism of any metal center toward noncovalent interactions.

Engineered Transport in Microporous Materials and Membranes for Clean Energy Technologies

Many forward-looking clean-energy technologies hinge on the development of scalable and efficient membrane-based separations. Ongoing investment in the basic research of microporous materials is beginning to pay dividends in membrane technology maturation. Specifically, improvements in membrane selectivity, permeability, and durability are being leveraged for more efficient carbon capture, desalination, and energy storage, and the market adoption of membranes in those areas appears to be on the horizon. Herein, an overview of the microporous materials chemistry driving advanced membrane development, the clean-energy separations employing them, and the theoretical underpinnings tying membrane performance to membrane structure across multiple length scales is provided. The interplay of pore architecture and chemistry for a given set of analytes emerges as a critical design consideration dictating mass transport outcomes. Opportunities and outstanding challenges in the field are also discussed, including high-flux 2D molecular-sieving membranes, phase-change adsorbents as performance-enhancing components in composite membranes, and the need for quantitative metrologies for understanding mass transport in heterophasic materials and in micropores with unusual chemical interactions with analytes of interest.

A nanowire array with two types of bromoplumbate chains and high anisotropic conductance

Crystalline nanowire arrays would create great opportunity for novel electrical application. Herein, we report a metal halide-based crystalline nanowire array, which was the first example constructed from two types of bromoplumbate anion chains. The single crystal shows high anisotropic conductivity with semiconducting transport along the c axis and an insulating feature perpendicular to the c direction.
