Nanomineralogy of thorite in the supergiant Huayangchuan uranium ore deposit: Revealing a new geochemical behavior of actinide in environment

Thorium (Th) is a naturally occurring radioactive element found in the environment, and recent advancements have been made in identifying and characterizing Th-bearing nanoparticles (NPs). However, the main focus is still on synthesized Th-bearing NPs and knowledge about natural Th-bearing NPs remains limited. Here, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) observations of thorite from the Huayangchuan uranium ore deposit in Shaanxi Province, Central China, have revealed the nanoscale mineral characteristics of thorite. In this study, thorite NPs ranging from 5-10 nm in size were identified within the uranium ore. A combination of transmission electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectroscopy (TEM-EDS) elemental mapping and corresponding HRTEM images alongside Selected Area Electron Diffraction (SAED) and Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) patterns revealed a complex nanoscale structure in the thorite NPs, consisting of both amorphous and crystalline nanodomains with abundant defects. These nanostructures are associated with a metamictization mechanism in micrometer-sized thorite. Our findings indicate that the metamictization process can generate numerous thorite nanoparticles. Given the high penetrability and mobility of these NPs, the metamictization of thorite poses new challenges for the long-term stability of radioactive substances and the storage containers for radioactive waste. Furthermore, considering the likelihood of environmental release and the chemical toxicity, radioactivity, and nanotoxicity of natural Th-bearing NPs, increased attention should be given to the presence of natural thorite NPs in the ore deposit.

Critical Review: Uptake and Translocation of Organic Nanodelivery Vehicles in Plants

Nanodelivery vehicles (NDVs) are engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) that, within the agricultural sector, have been investigated for their ability to improve uptake and translocation of agrochemicals, control release, or target specific tissues or subcellular compartments. Both inorganic and organic NDVs have been studied for agrochemical delivery in the literature, but research on the latter has been slower to develop than the literature on the former. Since the two classes of nanomaterials exhibit significant differences in surface chemistry, physical deformability, and even colloidal stability, trends that apply to inorganic NDVs may not hold for organic NDVs, and vice versa. We here review the current literature on the uptake, translocation, biotransformation, and cellular and subcellular internalization of organic NDVs in plants following foliar or root administration. A background on nanomaterials and plant physiology is provided as a leveling ground for researchers in the field. Trends in uptake and translocation are examined as a function of NDV properties and compared to those reported for inorganic nanomaterials. Methods for assessing fate and transport of organic NDVs in plants (a major bottleneck in the field) are discussed. We end by identifying knowledge gaps in the literature that must be understood in order to rationally design organic NDVs for precision agrochemical nanodelivery.

Radiolabeling of Micro-/Nanoplastics via In-Diffusion

Micro- and nanoplastics are emerging pollutants with a concerning persistence in the environment. Research into their environmental impact requires addressing challenges related to sensitively and selectively detecting them in complex ecological media. One solution with great potential for alleviating these issues is using radiolabeling strategies. Here, we report the successful introduction of a 64Cu radiotracer into common microplastics, namely polyethylene, polyethylene terephthalate, polystyrene, polyamide, and polyvinylidene dichloride, which allows the sensitive detection of mere nanograms of substance. Utilizing a Hansen Solubility Parameter screening, we developed a swelling and in-diffusion process for tetraphenylporphyrin-complexed 64Cu, which permits one-pot labeling of polymer particles.

The behavior, transport, and positive regulation mechanism of ZnO nanoparticles in a plant-soil-microbe environment

ZnO nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) have been widely used in several fields, and they have the potential to be a novel fertilizer to promote plant growth. For the effective use of ZnO NPs, it is necessary to understand their influence mechanisms and key interactions with the soil physical and biological environment. In this review, we summarize the fate and transport of ZnO NPs applied via soil treatment or foliar spray in plant-soil systems and discuss their positive regulation mechanisms in plants and microbes. The latest research shows that the formation, bioavailability, and location of ZnO NPs experience complicated changes during the transport in soil-plant systems and that this depends on many factors. ZnO NPs can improve plant photosynthesis, nutrient element uptake, enzyme activity, and the related gene expression as well as modulate carbon/nitrogen metabolism, secondary metabolites, and the antioxidant systems in plants. Several microbial groups related to plant growth, disease biocontrol, and nutrient cycling in soil can be altered with ZnO NP treatment. In this work, we present a systematic comparison between ZnO NP fertilizer and conventional zinc salt fertilizer. We also fill several knowledge gaps in current studies with the hope of providing guidance for future research.

Imaging tools for plant nanobiotechnology

The successful application of nanobiotechnology in biomedicine has greatly changed the traditional way of diagnosis and treating of disease, and is promising for revolutionizing the traditional plant nanobiotechnology. Over the past few years, nanobiotechnology has increasingly expanded into plant research area. Nanomaterials can be designed as vectors for targeted delivery and controlled release of fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, nucleotides, proteins, etc. Interestingly, nanomaterials with unique physical and chemical properties can directly affect plant growth and development; improve plant resistance to disease and stress; design as sensors in plant biology; and even be used for plant genetic engineering. Similarly, there have been concerns about the potential biological toxicity of nanomaterials. Selecting appropriate characterization methods will help understand how nanomaterials interact with plants and promote advances in plant nanobiotechnology. However, there are relatively few reviews of tools for characterizing nanomaterials in plant nanobiotechnology. In this review, we present relevant imaging tools that have been used in plant nanobiotechnology to monitor nanomaterial migration, interaction with and internalization into plants at three-dimensional lengths. Including: 1) Migration of nanomaterial into plant organs 2) Penetration of nanomaterial into plant tissues (iii)Internalization of nanomaterials by plant cells and interactions with plant subcellular structures. We compare the advantages and disadvantages of current characterization tools and propose future optimal characterization methods for plant nanobiotechnology.

Nanoparticle's uptake and translocation mechanisms in plants via seed priming, foliar treatment, and root exposure: a review

Nanotechnology is one of the promising techniques and shares wide ranges of applications almost in every field of life. Nanomaterials are getting continuous attractions due to specific physical and chemical properties and being applied as multifunctional material. The use of nanomaterials/nanoparticles in agriculture sector for crop improvement and protection against various environmental threats have attained greater significance. Size and nature of nanoparticles, mode of application, environmental conditions, rhizospheric and phyllospheric environment, and plant species are major factors that influence the action of nanoparticles. The mode or method of nanoparticle applications to plants is attaining greater attentions. Recently, different methods for nanoparticle applications (seed priming, foliar, and root application) are being used to improve crop growth. It is of quite worth that which method is suitable for nanoparticle application, and how nanoparticles can possibly translocate to various plant tissues from root to shoot or vice versa. These information's are poorly understood and need more investigations to explore the comprehensive mechanism by which nanoparticles make their possible entry through different plant organs and how they transport to regulate various physiological and molecular functions in plant cells. Therefore, this study comprehensively provides the knowledge of nanoparticles uptake via seed priming, foliar exposure, and root application, and their possible translocation mechanism within plants influenced by various factors that has not clearly presented. This study will provide new insights to find out an actual uptake and translocation mechanism of nanoparticles that may help researchers to develop nanoparticle-based new strategies for plants to cope with various environmental challenges. This study also focuses on different soil factors or above ground factors that are involved in nanoparticles uptake and translocation and ultimately their functioning in plants.

Interaction of Nanoatrazine and Target Organism: Evaluation of Fate and Photosystem II Inhibition in Hydroponically Grown Mustard (Brassica juncea) Plants

Poly(epsilon-caprolactone) nanoparticles are an efficient carrier system for atrazine. However, there is a gap regarding the effects of nanoencapsulation on herbicide-plant interactions. Here, we evaluate the fate and photosystem II inhibition of nano and commercial atrazine in hydroponically grown mustard (Brassica juncea) plants whose roots were exposed to the formulations. In addition, to quantify the endogenous levels of atrazine in plant organs, we measured the inhibition of photosystem II activity by both formulations. Moreover, the fluorescently labeled nanoatrazine was tracked in plant tissues using confocal microscopy. The nanoencapsulation induced greater inhibition of photosystem II activity as well as higher accumulation of atrazine in roots and leaves. The nanoparticles were quickly absorbed by the roots, being detected in the vascular tissues and the leaves. Overall, these results provide insights into the mechanisms involved in the enhanced preemergent herbicidal activity of nanoatrazine against target plants.

Nanotechnology-enabled biofortification strategies for micronutrients enrichment of food crops: Current understanding and future scope

Nutrient deficiency in food crops severely compromises human health, particularly in under privileged communities. Globally, billions of people, particularly in developing nations, have limited access to nutritional supplements and fortified foods, subsequently suffering from micronutrient deficiency leading to a range of health issues. The green revolution enhanced crop production and provided food to billions of people but often falls short with respect to the nutritional quality of that food. Plants may assimilate nutrients from synthetic chemical fertilizers, but this approach generally has low nutrient delivery and use efficiency. Further, the overexposure of chemical fertilizers may increase the risk of neoplastic diseases, render food crops unfit for consumption and cause environmental degradation. Therefore, to address these challenges, more research is needed for sustainable crop yield and quality enhancement with minimum use of chemical fertilizers. Complex nutritional disorders and 'hidden hunger' can be addressed through biofortification of food crops. Nanotechnology may help to improve food quality via biofortification as plants may readily acquire nanoparticle-based nutrients. Nanofertilizers are target specific, possess controlled release, and can be retained for relatively long time periods, thus prevent leaching or run-off from soil. This review evaluates the recent literature on the development and use of nanofertilizers, their effects on the environment, and benefits to food quality. Further, the review highlights the potential of nanomaterials on plant genetics in biofortification, as well as issues of affordability, sustainability, and toxicity.

Exposure of cerium oxide nanoparticles to the hyperaccumulator Sedum alfredii decreases the uptake of cadmium via the apoplastic pathway

Cadmium (Cd) is harmful to the environment and threatens human health. With the increasing use of cerium oxide nanoparticles (CeO₂NPs) in extensive industries, investigating the combination of CeO₂NPs and plants has attracted research interests for phytoremediation. Here, we explored the effects of CeO₂NPs on Cd uptake, transport and the consequent Cd accumulation in Sedum alfredii. Exposure of 50 or 500 mg L^-1 CeO₂NPs alone had no apparent damaging effects on plant growth. However, upon Cd condition, the consistent CeO₂NPs decreased Cd concentrations in the roots and shoots by up to 37%. Furthermore, the application of a metabolic inhibitor revealed that CeO₂NPs mainly decreased the Cd uptake in roots by the apoplastic pathway. Simultaneously, CeO₂NPs accelerated the development of Casparian strips (CSs) and suberin, which was further proven by the elevated expression levels of genes associated with their formation, SaCASP, SaGPAT5, SaKCS20 and SaCYP86A1. Compared to CeO₂NPs added alone, the concurrent Cd decreased the Ce contents in the roots and altered its translocation from root to shoot. Taken together, both CeO₂NPs and Cd influence the interactional uptake of both chemicals in roots of S. alfredii mainly via the apoplastic pathway which is primarily regulated by the development of CSs and suberin.

Germination and Early Development of Three Spontaneous Plant Species Exposed to Nanoceria (nCeO2) with Different Concentrations and Particle Sizes

This study aimed to provide insight regarding the influence of Ce oxide nanoparticles (nCeO₂) with different concentrations and two different particle sizes on the germination and root elongation in seedlings of spontaneous terrestrial species. In a bench-scale experiment, seeds of the monocot, Holcus lanatus and dicots Lychnis-flos-cuculi and Diplotaxis tenuifolia were treated with solutions containing nCeO₂ 25 nm and 50 nm in the range 0-2000 mg Ce L^-1. The results show that nCeO₂ enters within the plant tissues. Even at high concentration, nCeO₂ have positive effects on seed germination and the development of the seedling roots. This study further demonstrated that the particle size had no influence on the germination of L. flos-cuculi, while in H. lanatus and D. tenuifolia, the germination percentage was slightly higher (+10%) for seeds treated with nCeO₂ 25 nm with respect to 50 nm. In summary, the results indicated that nCeO₂ was taken up by germinating seeds, but even at the highest concentrations, they did not have negative effects on plant seedlings. The influence of the different sizes of nCeO₂ on germination and root development was not very strong. It is likely that particle agglomeration and ion dissolution influenced the observed effects.

A non-classical route of efficient plant uptake verified with fluorescent nanoparticles and root adhesion forces investigated using AFM

Classical plant uptake is limited to hydrophilic or water-dispersible material. Therefore, in order to test the uptake behaviour of hydrophobic particles, here, we tested the fate of hydrophobic particles (oleylamine coated Cu2-xSe NPs (CS@OA)) in comparison to hydrophilic particles (chitosan-coated Cu2-xSe NPs (CS@CH)) by treatment on the plant roots. Surprisingly, hydrophobic CS@OA NPs have been found to be ~ 1.3 times more efficient than hydrophilic CS@CH NPs in tomato plant root penetration. An atomic force microscopy (AFM) adhesion force experiment confirms that hydrophobic NPs experience non-spontaneous yet energetically favorable root trapping and penetration. Further, a relative difference in the hydrophobic vs. hydrophilic NPs movement from roots to shoots has been observed and found related to the change in protein corona as identified by two dimensional-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (2D-PAGE) analysis. Finally, the toxicity assays at the give concentration showed that Cu2-xSe NPs lead to non-significant toxicity as compared to control. This technology may find an advantage in fertilizer application.

Analysis of cerium oxide and copper oxide nanoparticles bioaccessibility from radish using SP-ICP-MS

BACKGROUND

The transformation of nanoparticles (NPs) internalized in plant tissues is the human digestive system that can provide a better understanding of the impact of NPs on the human system. The presented methodology was developed to study the bioaccessibility of cerium oxide (CeO₂ ) and copper oxide (CuO) NPs from radish after the in vitro simulation of gastrointestinal digestion using single-particle inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (SP-ICP-MS).

RESULTS

Radish plants were cultivated hydroponically in a growth medium containing: (i) CeO₂ NPs and (ii) CuO NPs. Both cerium (Ce) and copper (Cu) were found in all organs of the radish plants after analysis by standalone ICP-MS. This confirms the bioaccumulation of CeO₂ and CuO NPs and the translocation of their Ce and Cu to the aerial parts of the plant. Less Ce (4.095 μg g^-1 ) has been detected in leaves than in roots (1.156 mg g^-1 ) while Cu content in leaves was 5.245 μg g^-1 and in roots was 10.41 μg g^-1 . Analysis of the digestive extracts obtained after the in vitro simulation of gastro (pepsin) and gastrointestinal (pancreatin) digestion showed that Ce has easy access to human system at least by 73%.

CONCLUSION

The size of CeO₂ NPs in digestive extracts showed no significant changes. However, the results obtained for CuO NPs digestion were variable and suggested that CuO NPs dissolved during the digestion process. The CuO NPs were observed in roots after the gastrointestinal digestion concluding that CuO NPs recovered after the initial dissolution. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry.

Citric acid enhances Ce uptake and accumulation in rice seedlings exposed to CeO2 nanoparticles and iron plaque attenuates the enhancement

To assess the role of citric acid, as a typical low-molecular-weight organic acid from root exudates, on cerium (Ce) uptake, accumulation and translocation in rice seedlings (Oryza sativa L.) exposed to two CeO₂ nanoparticles (NPs) (14 nm and 25 nm). A hydroponic experiment was performed under two citric acid levels (0.01 and 0.04 mmol L^-1) combined with iron plaque presence. Citric acid significantly enhanced surface-Ce, root-Ce and shoot-Ce accumulation, irrespective of NPs size and iron plaque presence. The increased surface-Ce was associated with the promoted interactive attraction between NPs and root surface, and the enhanced NPs dissolution. Surface-Ce (containing crystalline and amorphous fractions of iron plaque) accumulation increased with the increase of citric acid concentrations. However, the enhancement influence of 0.01 mmol L^-1 citric acid on root-Ce, shoot-Ce accumulations, rice-Ce distribution and TF_root-shoot was more remarkable than citric acid (0.04 mmol L^-1), which suggested higher food security risk for human health with environment-level citric acid. Iron plaque presence attenuated the enhancement effect of citric acid on rice-Ce accumulation and distribution (containing surface-Ce, root-Ce and shoot-Ce) due to the reduced attractive interaction between NPs and root surface from the effect of Fe²⁺ being dissolved by iron plaque. Above effect of citric acid and iron plaque was more remarkable in 25 nm NP than 14 nm NP.

Citric acid and glycine reduce the uptake and accumulation of Fe2O3 nanoparticles and oxytetracycline in rice seedlings upon individual and combined exposure

Uptake of nanoparticles and antibiotics by plants is root exudates-dependent, however, the underlying influence processes and mechanisms from different root exudates are rarely investigated. A hydroponic experiment was conducted to investigate the accumulation of Fe₂O₃ nanoparticle (NP) and oxytetracycline (OTC) in rice seedlings, in the absence or presence of citric acid or glycine, acting as components of root exudates. Irrespective of individual or combined exposure of Fe₂O₃ NP and OTC, citric acid and glycine both reduced surface-Fe, surface-OTC, root-OTC, shoot-OTC accumulations with dose-effect relationship. Two exudates increased |ζ| values of NP, which weakened the interactive attraction between NP and root surface and then decreased surface-Fe accumulation. Citric acid and glycine binding with OTC in solution decreased surface-OTC accumulation, and further decreased root-OTC and shoot-OTC accumulations. Combined exposure of two pollutants alleviated the reduction effect of citric acid and glycine on surface-Fe/surface-OTC/root-OTC accumulations due to their high accumulations in combined exposure compared to individual exposure. Although citric acid and glycine promoted TF_root-shoot and TF_surface-root of two pollutants, respectively, they always decreased total rice-Fe and rice-OTC accumulations. Therefore, the presence of root exudates decreased the bioaccumulation of Fe₂O₃ NP and OTC in rice upon their individual and combined exposure through changing their environmental behaviors in rhizosphere.

Competitive Adsorption of ZrO2 Nanoparticle and Alkali Cations (Li+-Cs+) on Muscovite (001)

We studied the adsorption behavior of ZrO₂ nanoparticles on a muscovite (001) surface in the presence of cations from the alkali series (Li⁺, Na⁺, K⁺, Rb⁺, and Cs⁺). The results of X-ray reflectivity, i.e., specular crystal truncation rod and resonant anomalous X-ray reflectivity in combination with AFM images, show that the sorption of ZrO₂ nanoparticles is significantly affected by the binding mode of alkali ions on the muscovite (001) surface. From solutions containing alkali ions binding as outer sphere surface complexes (i.e., Li⁺ and Na⁺), higher uptake of Zr⁴⁺ is observed corresponding to the binding of larger nanoparticles, which relatively easily replace the loosely bound alkali ions. However, Zr⁴⁺ uptake in solutions containing alkali ions binding as inner sphere surface complexes (i.e., K⁺, Rb⁺, and Cs⁺) is significantly lower, and smaller nanoparticles are found at the interface. In addition, the uptake of Zr⁴⁺ in the presence of inner sphere bound cations displays a strong linear relationship with the hydration energy of the coexisting alkali ion. The linear trend can be interpreted as competitive adsorption between ZrO₂ nanoparticles and inner sphere bound alkali cations, which are replaced on the surface and undergo rehydration after release to the solution. The rehydration of alkali ions gives rise to a large energy gain, which dominates the reaction energy of the competitive adsorption process. The competitive adsorption mechanism of ZrO₂ nanoparticles and alkali ions is discussed comprehensively to highlight the potential relationship between the hydration effect of alkali ions and the effect of charge density of the nanoparticles.
