Markov State Models Reveal How Folding Kinetics Influence Absorption Spectra of Foldamers

Self-assembly of platinum(II) complex foldamers is an essential approach to fabricate advanced luminescent materials. However, a comprehensive understanding of folding kinetics and their absorption spectra remains elusive. By constructing Markov state models (MSMs) from large-scale molecular dynamics simulations, we reveal that two largely similar dinuclear alknylplatinum(II) terpyridine foldamers, Pt-PEG and Pt-PE with slightly different bridges, exhibit distinctive folding kinetics. Particularly, Pt-PEG bears bridge-dominant, plane-dominant, and cooperative pathways, while Pt-PE only prefers the plane-dominant pathway. Such preference originates from their difference in intrabridge electrostatic interactions, leading to contrastive distributions of metastable states. We also found that the bridge-dominant pathway for Pt-PEG becomes more favorable when lowering the temperature. Interestingly, based on the comprehensive conformation ensembles from our MSMs, we reveal the conformation-dependent absorption spectra of Pt-PEG and Pt-PE. Our theoretical spectra not only align with experimental results but also reveal the contributions of diverse conformations to the overall absorption bands explicitly, facilitating the rational design of stimuli-responsive smart luminescent molecules.

Cyanido-bridged diplatinum(ii) complexes: ligand and solvent effect on aggregation and luminescence

The association of platinum(ii)-based luminophores, which is caused by metal⋯metal and π-π stacking interactions, has been actively exploited in supramolecular construction of photofunctional molecular materials. Herein, we describe a series of bimetallic complexes [{Pt(C^N^/*N)}2(CN)][BAr4F], containing cyanido-bridged cyclometalated Pt(ii) chromophore fragments (HC^N^N = 6-phenyl-2,2'-bipyridine, (benzyltriazolyl)-phenylpyridine, and pyrazolyl-phenylpyridine; HC^N*N = N-pentyl-6-phenyl-N-(pyridin-2-yl)pyridin-2-amine; ^/* denote five/six-membered metallocycles). These compounds are intensely phosphorescent at room temperature showing quantum yields up to 0.73 in solution and 0.62 in the solid state, which are generally higher than those of the mononuclear relatives [Pt(C^N^/*N)(CN)]. The complex cations bearing sterically unhindered -C^N^N ligands readily assemble in solution, reaching the tetrameric species [{Pt(C^N^N)}2(CN)]44+ as suggested by diffusion NMR spectroscopy. The size of the aggregates can be regulated by the concentration, temperature, and polarity of the solvent that allows to alter the emission from green to near-IR. In the solid state, the maximum of low-energy luminescence is shifted up to 912 nm. The results show that photophysical properties of discrete complexes and the intermolecular aggregation can be substantially enhanced by utilizing the rigid bimetallic units giving rise to novel dynamic light emitting Pt(ii) systems.

Stimuli-fluorochromic smart organic materials

Smart materials based on stimuli-fluorochromic π-conjugated solids (SFCSs) have aroused significant interest due to their versatile and exciting properties, leading to advanced applications. In this review, we highlight the recent developments in SFCS-based smart materials, expanding beyond organometallic compounds and light-responsive organic luminescent materials, with a discussion on the design strategies, exciting properties and stimuli-fluorochromic mechanisms along with their potential applications in the exciting fields of encryption, sensors, data storage, display, green printing, etc. The review comprehensively covers single-component and multi-component SFCSs as well as their stimuli-fluorochromic behaviors under external stimuli. We also provide insights into current achievements, limitations, and major challenges as well as future opportunities, aiming to inspire further investigation in this field in the near future. We expect this review to inspire more innovative research on SFCSs and their advanced applications so as to promote further development of smart materials and devices.

Luminescent Platinum(II) Complexes with Terdentate N∧C∧C Ligands

The synthesis, structure, and luminescence of Pt(II) complexes of the type [Pt(N∧C∧C)(L)] are reported, where N∧C∧C is a terdentate ligand resulting from the cycloplatination of 2-(3,5-diphenoxyphenyl)pyridine or 2-(4,4″-dimethyl-[1,1':3',1″-terphenyl]-5'-yl)pyridine, and L represents a monodentate ancillary ligand, which can be γ-picoline, 4-pyridinecarboxaldehyde, PPh3, n-butyl or 2,6-dimethylphenyl isocyanide, CO, or the N-heterocyclic carbenes 1-butyl-3-methylimidazol-2-ylidene or 4-butyl-3-methyl-1-phenyl-1H-1,2,3-triazol-5-ylidene. Derivatives bearing CO, isocyanides, or carbenes showed the highest stabilities in solution, whereas the pyridine and PPh3 derivatives establish ligand-exchange equilibria in acetonitrile. Different supramolecular structures are observed in the solid state, which largely depend on the nature of the ancillary ligand. Isocyanides and CO favor π interactions between the aromatic rings, metallophilic Pt···Pt contacts, or a combination of both. In contrast, pyridine ligands may lead to bimolecular assemblies driven by C-H···O, C-H···Pt, or C-H/π hydrogen bonds. Luminescence was examined in fluid solution, poly(methyl methacrylate) matrices, and the solid state at 298 K, and in 2-methyltetrahydrofuran glasses at 77 K. The majority of derivatives show highly efficient emissions from 3ILCT/MLCT or 3ILCT/MLCT/LLCT excited states of monomeric species. The formation of excimers and different types of emissive aggregates are demonstrated, which lead to red-shifted emissions of different origins and characteristics depending on the involved noncovalent interactions.

Functional Molecular Crystals from the Arylation of a Halogenoplatinum Complex: Stimuli Responsiveness, Comproportionation, and π-Bridged Dimerization

A chloroplatinum complex was arylated to obtain stimuli-responsive molecular crystals. The resulting arylplatinum complex showed polymorph-dependent emission, mechano- and thermochromic luminescence as well as comproportionation and π-bridged dimerization. Simple mixing of structurally similar arylplatinum complexes at room temperature resulted in the transfer of their aryl groups (comproportionation), which allowed their mechanochromic profiles to be tuned. We also found that recrystallization of the complex afforded a dimerized product in which two platinum ions are bridged by aryl groups resulting in a very short (3.0466(10) Å) Pt-Pt distance.

Precise peripheral design enables propeller-like squaraine dye with highly sensitive and wide-range piezochromism

Piezochromic fluorescent (PCF) materials that feature high sensitivity and wide-range switching are attractive in intelligent optoelectronic applications but their fabrication remains a significant challenge. Here we present a propeller-like squaraine dye SQ-NMe₂ decorated with four peripheral dimethylamines acting as electron donors and spatial obstacles. This precise peripheral design is expected to loosen the molecular packing pattern and facilitate more substantial intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) switching caused by conformational planarization under mechanical stimuli. As such, the pristine SQ-NMe₂ microcrystal exhibits significant fluorescence changes from yellow (λ_em = 554 nm) to orange (λ_em = 590 nm) upon slight mechanical grinding and further to deep red (λ_em = 648 nm) upon heavy mechanical grinding. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction structural analysis of two SQ-NMe₂ polymorphs provides direct evidence to illustrate the design concept of such a piezochromic molecule. The piezochromic behavior of SQ-NMe₂ microcrystals is sensitive, high-contrast, and easily reversible, enabling cryptographic applications.

Tailoring Dye Emissions within Metal-Organic Frameworks for Tunable Luminescence and Ratiometric Temperature Sensing

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as powerful platforms for tuning the luminescence characteristics of guests due to their various structures and functions. Tunable and stimuli-responsive luminescence of guests within MOFs can be achieved through a judicious choice of guests and hosts. Herein, we demonstrate a dramatic change in the luminescence of dye excimers encapsulated in MOFs. A polar dye presented largely red-shifted excimer emissions in MOFs with higher polarities, while a nonpolar dye showed very different excimer emissions. Interestingly, the excimer emissions tailored by the MOFs showed strong thermal quenching. Cz-Ant@ZIF-8, containing two luminescent dyes (carbazole (Cz) and anthracene (Ant)), was prepared, and it presented ratiometric temperature sensing properties (1.55% K^-1) in the temperature range of 278-353 K. This work sheds light on the luminescence tuning of dyes confined in MOFs and the design of sensitive ratiometric thermometers.

Anion-selective "Turn-on" two color phosphorescent probes based on "Pd-Pd" interaction of a series of cyclometallated Palladium (II) complexes induced by a self-assembly in aqueous solution

Herein, three pairs of cationic cyclometallated palladium (II) complexes with different types of C^N ligands, which is non-phosphorescent in aqueous solution, interestingly, they can be utilized as turn-on blue phosphorescent probes selectively for ClO^-, HSO₃^- and CO₃^2-, and turn-on green phosphorescent probe for HSO₃^- in aqueous solution. These different phosphorescent turn-on responses of Pd(II) complexes could be attributed to the degree of coordination and electrostatic interaction between them with specific anion. It suggests that the selectivity towards specific anion of these cyclometallated Pd(II) complexes can be further improved by rationally tuning the structure and enhancing aromaticity of C^N ligand. Our study reveals that these specific species of anions can effectively induce self-assembly of Pd(II) compounds with different C^N ligand based on PdPd interaction, the aggregation and morphology of palladium complex with anion in aqueous media was also investigated by various means of ¹H NMR, UV/Vis, fluorescence spectra, and dynamic light scattering (DLS) analysis. Moreover, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) reveals that nanowires with increased length of diameters of Pd complexes can form in aqueous solution in presence of anions with different high concentration. Furthermore, the cellular uptake and location of Pd2a was also investigated by confocal imaging for the first time. DFT calculation of monomer and dimer of Pd2a was also performed, which is helpful to explain the turn on phosphorescent effect during self-assembly process.

Reversible Near-Infrared Fluorescent Probe for Rapid Sensing Sulfur Dioxide and Formaldehyde: Recognition and Photoactivation Mechanism and Applications in Bioimaging and Encryption Ink

A novel near-infrared (NIR) fluorescent Probe 1 was successfully developed for the reversible detection of sulfur dioxide derivatives and formaldehyde. The purple solution of Probe 1 faded to colorless in 1.8 s with the addition of HSO₃^-. Meanwhile, its fluorescence signal disappeared instantaneously with a 39 nM detection limit. The probe exhibited excellent selectivity toward HSO₃^- over other potential interfering agents. Then, its absorption and fluorescence bands were able to effectively recover in response to formaldehyde. Remarkably, this reverse process was able to accelerate 84 times under UV light in 122 s and achieved a recovery rate of 98% by UV light, the photoactivation mechanism was fully determined by HRMS and theoretical calculation. Furthermore, we demonstrated that Probe 1 was successfully applied for the detection of sulfur dioxide derivatives and formaldehyde in living cells and data encryption.

Enhanced Electrochemiluminescence of A Macrocyclic Tetradentate Chelate Pt(II) Molecule via Its Collisional Interactions with the Electrode

A macrocyclic tetradentate chelate Pt(II) molecule (Pt1) served as an excellent luminophore in electrochemiluminescence (ECL) processes. The blue ECL of Pt1/S2O82- coreactant system in N,N'-dimethylformamide was found to be 46 times higher than that of the Ru(bpy)2+/S2O82- system or 30 times higher than that of the 9,10-diphenylanthracene/S2O82- system. The unprecedented high ECL quantum efficiencies were caused by the cyclic generation of monomer excited states through collisional interactions of Pt1 molecules with the electrode at an elevated frequency. The ECL is tunable from bright blue to pure white by simply changing the solvent from N,N'-dimethylformamide to dichloromethane. The white ECL of Pt(II) molecule was reported for the first time and the mechanism was proposed to be the simultaneous emissions from the monomer excited state (blue) and excimer (red).

Reversible Multilevel Stimuli-Responsiveness and Multicolor Room-Temperature Phosphorescence Emission Based on a Single-Component System

There are limited reports about the transformation of pure organic room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) materials with multilevel stimuli-responsiveness at different RTP emission wavelengths under external stimuli. It is difficult to ensure efficient intersystem crossing (ISC) in different states of a single-component system. This research reports the conversion of the organic single-component small molecule 1,2-bis(4-alkoxyphenyl)ethane-1,2-dione (N-BOX) with multilevel stimuli-responsiveness between high-efficiency blue and yellow RTP by grinding or thermal annealing N-BOX crystals. The RTP emission of N-BOX in the crystalline state was easy to adjust by external stimuli (grinding or thermal annealing) due to its non-compact packing, which led to a phase transition and generated unique multilevel stimuli-responsiveness. In particular, the RTP quantum yield of 7-BOX with multilevel stimuli-responsiveness reached 68.4 %, which provides an opportunity for regulation of smart optical materials based on pure organic RTP.

Role of the Trifluoropropynyl Ligand in Blue-Shifting Charge-Transfer States in Emissive Pt Diimine Complexes and an Investigation into the PMMA-Imposed Rigidoluminescence and Rigidochromism

Square-planar Pt^II complexes are of interest as dopants for the emissive layer of organic light-emitting diodes. Herein, the photophysics of three Pt bipyridyl complexes with the strongly e^- withdrawing, high-field, 3,3,3-trifluoropropynyl ligand has been investigated. One complex, (phbpy)PtC₂CF₃ (phbpy = 6-phenyl-2,2'-dipyridyl), has also been characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. All complexes reported are emissive in both RT CH₂Cl₂ solution (Φ_PL = 0.007 to 0.027) and PMMA film (Φ_PL = 0.25 to 0.42). The trifluoropropynyl ligand elevates the energy of the MLCT and LL'CT states above that of the IL π-π* state, resulting in IL emission in all cases. The emission energies of the trifluoropropynyl compounds are also blue-shifted relative to the analogous pentafluorophenylethynyl compounds, suggesting that the trifluoropropynyl ligand is one of the most electron-withdrawing alkynyl ligands. Rate constants for radiative and nonradiative deactivation were determined from experimentally determined values of Φ_PL and excited-state lifetimes in both solution and PMMA films. The increase in Φ_PL upon incorporation into PMMA film (rigidoluminescence) results from a decrease in the rate constant for non-radiative relaxation. Experimental activation energies for excited-state decay in combination with TDDFT are consistent with the rigidoluminescence resulting from an increase in the energy of the non-emissive triplet metal-centered state. Two of the complexes investigated, (^Ph2bpy)Pt(C₂CF₃)₂ and (^t-Bu2bpy)Pt(C₂CF₃)₂, where ^t-Bu2bpy = 4,4'-di-tert-butyl-2,2'-dipyridyl and ^Ph2bpy = 4,4'-diphenyl-2,2'-dipyridyl, exhibit concentration-dependent excimer emission (orange) along with monomer emission (blue), enabling fine-tuning of the emission color. However, excimer emission was absent in cured PMMA films up to the solubility limit for solution processing of (^Ph2bpy)Pt(C₂CF₃)₂ in CH₂Cl₂, demonstrating the diffusional nature of excimer formation.

Multistimuli-Responsive Properties of Aggregated Isocyanide Cycloplatinated(II) Complexes

Here, we describe the neutral cyclometalated tert-butylisocyanide Pt^II complexes, [Pt(C^∧N)Cl(CNBu^t)] 1, the double salts [Pt(C^∧N)(CNBu^t)₂][Pt(C^∧N)Cl₂] 2, and the cationic complexes [Pt(C^∧N)(CNBu^t)₂]ClO₄ 3 [C∧N = difluorophenylpyridine (dfppy, a), 4-(2-pyridyl)benzaldehyde (ppy-CHO, b)]. A comparative study of the pseudopolymorphs 1a, 1a·CHCl₃, 1b, 1b·0.5Toluene, 1b·0.5PhF, and 3a·0.25CH₂Cl₂ reveals strong aggregation through Pt···Pt and/or π···π stacking interactions to give a variety of distinctive one-dimensional (1D) infinite chains, which modulate the photoluminescent properties. This intermolecular long-range aggregate formation is the main origin of the photoluminescent behavior of 1a and 1b complexes, which exhibit highly sensitive and reversible responses to multiple external stimuli including different volatile organic compounds (VOCs), solvents, temperatures, and pressures, with distinct color and phosphorescent color switching from green to red. Furthermore, complex 1b undergoes supramolecular self-assembly via Pt···Pt and/or π···π interactions into a polymer thin polystyrene (PS) film 10 wt % in response to toluene vapors, and 3a exhibits vapochromic and vapoluminescent behavior. Theoretical simulations on the dimer, trimer, and tetramer models of 1a and 1b have been carried out to get insight into the photophysical properties in the aggregated solid state.

Multiresponsive Cyclometalated Crown Ether Bearing a Platinum(II) Metal Center

Multiresponsive materials can adapt to numerous changes in their local environment, which makes them highly valuable for various applications. Although nanostructured and polymeric multiresponsive materials are plentiful, small-molecule analogues are scarce. This work presents a compact cyclometalated platinum(II) complex that bears a crown ether cavity (18C6-Pt^II); the intimate ring/emitter connectivity is key to unlocking multiresponsiveness. Complex 18C6-Pt^II responds to (i) cationic guests, producing changes in luminescence in both solution and the solid state, (ii) solvent molecules, which perturb the packing of the complex in the solid state and cause reversible color changes, and (iii) solvent polarity, which leads to controlled aggregation. These responses may enable 18C6-Pt^II to function as a sensor for ions and solvents, or as a functional unit for the fabrication of hybrid supramolecular polymers and metallogels.

Reversible On-Off Switching of Excitation-Wavelength-Dependent Emission of a Phosphorescent Soft Salt Based on Platinum(II) Complexes

Excitation-wavelength-dependent (Ex-De) emission materials show excellent potential in diverse advanced photonic areas. Of significant importance is the on-demand regulation of the Ex-De luminescence behavior of these materials, which is previously unprecedented. In this study, we report on a platinum(II) complex-based phosphorescent soft salt S1 ([Pt(tpp)(ed)]⁺[Pt(ftpp)(CN)₂]^- (where ttp = 2-(4-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)pyridine, ed = ethane-1,2-diamine, and ftpp = 2-(4-fluoro-3-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)pyridine)) with Ex-De photoluminescence (PL) property. UV-visible absorption and PL spectra of S1 were recorded in DMSO-H₂O mixture (1 × 10^-3 M) with various H₂O fractions to investigate its ground and excited states. Interestingly, the PL spectra of S1 powder show that its maximum emission peak is red-shifted from 595 to 644 nm upon excitation at different wavelengths from 360 to 520 nm, accompanied by an obvious emission color change from yellow-orange to red. Furthermore, confocal laser scanning fluorescence microscopy was employed to determine the PL property of self-assembled uniform S1 nanostructure, and the result shows that the Ex-De emission behavior is absent. On the basis of these results, we conclude the various Pt(II)···Pt(II) distances that exist are the major factor responsible for the properties of the Ex-De PL of S1 powder. Thus, for the first time, reversible on-off switching of Ex-De PL of S1 was achieved by manipulating its Pt(II)···Pt(II) distances through mechanical stress and vapor fuming. Finally, we demonstrate the high-level anticounterfeiting applications via on-demand multicolor displays.

Thermoresponsive multicolor-emissive materials based on solid lipid nanoparticles

Despite the recent advances in the field of thermofluorochromism, the fabrication of thermoresponsive multicolor-emissive materials in a simple, low-cost and versatile manner still remains a challenge. Herein we accomplish this goal by expanding the concept of matrix-induced thermofluorochromism, where a sudden two-state variation of dyes' emission is promoted by the solid-liquid transition of a surrounding phase change material (e.g., paraffins). We demonstrate that this behavior can be transferred to the nanoscale by the synthesis of dye-loaded solid lipid nanoparticles, different types of which can then be combined into a single platform to obtain multicolor thermofluorochromism using a single type of emitter. Because of the reduced dimensions of these particles, they can be utilized to prepare transparent nanocomposites and inkjet-printed patterns showing complex thermoresponsive luminescence signals and applications ranging from smart displays to thermal sensing and high-security anti-counterfeiting.

Molecular copper iodide clusters: a distinguishing family of mechanochromic luminescent compounds

Mechanochromic luminescent materials displaying switchable luminescence properties in response to external mechanical force are currently attracting wide interest because of their multiple potential applications. In the growing number of mechanochromic luminescent compounds, mechanochromic complexes based on copper present appealing features with a large variety of mechanochromic properties and economical advantages over other metals. Among Cu-based compounds, molecular copper iodide clusters of cubane geometry with formula [Cu₄I₄L₄] (L = organic ligand) stand out. Indeed, they can exhibit multiple luminescent stimuli-responsive properties, being particularly suitable for the development of multifunctional photoactive systems. This perspective describes the survey of these mechanochromic luminescent cubane copper iodide clusters. Based on our investigations, their mechanochromic luminescence properties are presented along with the study of the underlying mechanism. Establishment of structure-property relationships supported by various characterization techniques and associated with theoretical investigations permits gaining insights into the mechanism at play. Studies of other researcher groups are also described and illustrate the interest shown by these mechanochromic compounds. Mechanically responsive films are reported, demonstrating their potential use in a range of applications of such copper-based stimuli-responsive materials. Current challenges faced by the development of technological applications are finally outlined.

Osmaindenes: Synthesis and Reversible Mechanochromism Characteristics

A series of novel osmaindenes 1 - 6 bearing different substituents (CF 3 , H, I, Br, OCH 3 , N(Ph) 2 ) has been synthesized by nucleophilic reaction of water with the corresponding aromatic osmanaphthalyne complexes. All osmaindenes 1 - 6 have been characterized by elemental analysis (EA) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, although the low solubilities of 3 and 4 precluded the accumulation of their 13 C NMR spectra. Osmaindenes 2 , 3 and 5 have also been characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Subsequently, through solid-state fluorescence spectroscopy, mechanochromic studies, and powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, we found that osmaindenes 1 - 6 fluoresce at wavelengths in the range 500-800 nm, while also displaying reversible mechanochromic properties. The solid-state fluorescence emission of 1 after grinding extends into the near-infrared region. This research provides new insight into the design and synthesis of metallic materials with excellent mechanochromic properties.

Mechanochromic properties in a mononuclear Cu(I) complex without cuprophilic interactions

Two polymorphs of Cu[(3,4-bis(diphenylphosphino)thiophene)(bis(pyrazol-1-yl)borohydrate)] (1) were isolated. The blue luminescent crystals have evident mechanochromic luminescent (MCL) properties. Based on photophysical and structural analysis, the pore structure in the blue crystals is considered to be the main reason for the MCL properties.

The development of phosphorescent probes for in vitro and in vivo bioimaging

Phosphorescence is a process that slowly releases the photoexcitation energy after the removal of the excitation source. Although transition metal complexes and purely organic room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) materials show excellent phosphorescence property, their applications in in vitro and in vivo bioimaging are limited due to their poor solubility in water. To overcome this issue, phosphorescent materials are modified with amphiphilic or hydrophilic polymers to endow them with biocompatibility. This review focuses on recent advances in the development of phosphorescent probes for in vitro and in vivo bioimaging. The photophysical mechanism and the design principles of transition metal complexes and purely organic RTP materials for the stabilization of the triplet excited state for enhanced phosphorescence are first discussed. Then, the applications in in vitro and in vivo bioimaging using transition metal complexes including iridium(iii) complexes, platinum(ii) complexes, rhodium(i) complexes, and purely organic RTP materials are summarized. Finally, the current challenges and perspectives for these emerging materials in bioimaging are discussed.

Stimuli-Responsive Plasmonic Assemblies and Their Biomedical Applications

Among the diverse development of stimuli-responsive assemblies, plasmonic nanoparticle (NP) assemblies functionalized with responsive molecules are of a major interest. In this review, we outline a comprehensive and up-to-date overview of recently reported studies on in vitro and in vivo assembly/disassembly and biomedical applications of plasmonic NPs, wherein stimuli such as enzymes, light, pH, redox potential, temperature, metal ions, magnetic or electric field, and/or multi-stimuli were involved. Stimuli-responsive assemblies have been applied in various biomedical fields including biosensors, surfaced-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), photoacoustic (PA) imaging, multimodal imaging, photo-activated therapy, enhanced X-ray therapy, drug release, stimuli-responsive aggregation-induced cancer therapy, and so on. The perspectives on the use of stimuli-responsive plasmonic assemblies are discussed by addressing future scientific challenges involving assembly/disassembly strategies and applications.

Modulation of Metallophilic and π-π Interactions in Platinum Cyclometalated Luminophores with Halogen Bonding

Luminescent cyclometalated complexes [M(C^N^N)CN] (M=Pt, Pd; HC^N^N=pyridinyl- (M=Pt 1, Pd 5), benzyltriazolyl- (M=Pt 2), indazolyl- (M=Pt 3, Pd 6), pyrazolyl-phenylpyridine (M=Pt 4)) decorated with cyanide ligand, have been explored as nucleophilic building blocks for the construction of halogen-bonded (XB) adducts using IC₆ F₅ as an XB donor. The negative electrostatic potential of the CN group afforded CN⋅⋅⋅I noncovalent interactions for platinum complexes 1-3; the energies of XB contacts are comparable to those of metallophilic bonding according to QTAIM analysis. Embedding the chromophore units into XB adducts 1-3⋅⋅⋅IC₆ F₅ has little effect on the charge distribution, but strongly affects Pt⋅⋅⋅Pt bonding and π-stacking, which lead to excited states of MMLCT (metal-metal-to-ligand charge transfer) origin. The energies of these states and the photoemissive properties of the crystalline materials are primarily determined by the degree of aggregation of the luminophores via metal-metal interactions. The adduct formation depends on the nature of the metal and the structure of the metalated ligand, the variation of which can yield dynamic XB-supported systems, exemplified by thermally regulated transition 3↔3⋅⋅⋅IC₆ F₅ .

Solvent responses and substituent effects upon magnetic properties of mononuclear DyIII compounds

Solvent responsive magnets comprise a class of molecule-based materials where lattice solvent driven structural transformation leads to the switching of magnetic properties. Herein, we present a special type of magnet where single-crystal to single-crystal (SCSC) transformations within mononuclear DyIII compounds result in the switching of DyIII single-molecule magnets (SMMs). This structural transformation involves lattice solvents which leads to significant changes in the color and magnetic properties. Additionally, the relaxation dynamics of mononuclear DyIII compounds are perceptibly fine-tuned by the modification of β-diketonate ligands. The uniaxial magnetic anisotropies, magneto-structural correlations and the relaxation mechanism were investigated by magnetic studies and ab initio calculations. These experimental and theoretical studies indicate that compound 2 exhibits the best magnetic properties in compounds 1-4. The experimental observation is supported by the theoretical prediction of QTM time (τZeeQTM) as theτZeeQTM of 2 is remarkably longer than those of the other three compounds by an order of magnitude. This means that, compared with 1, 3, and 4, the magnetic relaxation of 2 is significantly slower. Meanwhile, 2 has the largest value of axial ESP (the axial electrostatic potential), which supports the smallest gXY value in these compounds, resulting in better SMM properties. The present results offer a systematic synthesis regulation to change the magnetization dynamics and further understand magneto-structural correlations for DyIII SMMs.

Highly Luminescent Liquid Crystals in Aggregation Based on Platinum(II) Complexes

Luminescent liquid crystals (LLCs) attract considerable attention because of their broad applications in displays, chemosensors, and anti-counterfeiting. However, it remains challenging to achieve a high luminescence efficiency in LCs because of the common aggregation-caused quenching effect. Herein, we demonstrate a facile approach to designing LLCs with a high quantum yield up to 88% by deliberately tuning the aggregation behavior of platinum(II) complexes with alkoxy chains (C_nH_2n+1O-). LLCs in hexagonal columnar and rectangular columnar phases are achieved when n = 12 and 16, respectively, as revealed by one-dimensional wide-angle X-ray diffraction and small-angle X-ray scattering. These LLCs are able to not only exhibit strong emission at elevated temperatures but also show attractive reversible vapochromism upon alternative CH₂Cl₂ and EtOH fuming, which imparts added functions and promises technological utility.

Flexible π-Conjugated 2,5-Diarylamino-Terephthalates: A New Class of Mechanochromic Luminophores with Tunable Aggregation States

The generation of different thermodynamically (meta)stable states is crucial for the development of smart solid-state luminescent materials. However, the design of luminophores with tunable aggregation states is remaining a grand challenge. Herein, we present a family of mechanochromic luminophores with tunable metastable states, based on the dynamically controllable π-π stacking of the flexible π-conjugated structure of 2,5-diarylamino-terephthalates in the solid state. The experimental data revealed that both the kinetically controlled metastable state and thermodynamic controlled stable state can be generated via tuning the intermolecular interactions such as π-π stacking and hydrogen bonds. As a result, the highly sensitive mechano-stimuli response of these luminophores was successfully achieved.

Robust liquid-core nanocapsules as biocompatible and precise ratiometric fluorescent thermometers for living cells

Intracellular thermometry with favorable biocompatibility and precision is essential for insight into temperature-related cellular events. Here, liquid-core nanocapsule ratiometric fluorescent thermometers (LCN-RFTs) were prepared by encapsulating thermosensitive organic fluorophores (N,N'-di(2-ethylhexyl)-3,4,9,10-perylene tetracarboxylic diimide, DEH-PDI) with hydrophobic solvent (2,2,4-trimethylpentane, TMP) into polystyrene/silica hybrid nanoshells. As the fluorescent thermosensitive unit of the LCN-RFT, the TMP solution of DEH-PDI was responsible for the fluorescence response to temperature. Benefitting from the hydrophilic nanoshells, the LCN-RFTs exhibited favorable anti-interference and biocompatibility. Furthermore, the LCN-RFTs showed an excellent precision of 0.02 °C-0.10 °C in a simulated physiological environment from 10.00 °C to 90.00 °C, and were employed to realize intracellular thermometry with an outstanding precision of 0.06 °C-0.14 °C. This work provides a feasible method of using hydrophobic organic fluorophores for intracellular thermometry by encapsulating them into nanocapsules.

Steric Engineering of Cyclometalated Pt(II) Complexes toward High-Contrast Monomer-Excimer-Based Mechanochromic and Vapochromic Luminescence

Ligands play a crucial role in the supramolecular photoluminescence properties of Pt(II) square-planar complexes. To improve the luminescence color responses of N∧C∧N cyclometalated Pt(II) complexes to external stimuli such as mechanical stress and chemical vapors, we have conducted a steric engineering of the previous systems 1a-1d [Inorg. Chem. 2017, 56, 4978-4989] by introducing two tert-butyl groups to the tridentate ligand to form complexes 2a-2c. Unlike the "too low" or "too high" steric hindrance of the NCNPt core in 1a-1d, the combined steric effects of the tert-butyl groups at one side and the pentiptycene group at the other side of the NCNPt core in 2b are "just right" for generating as-prepared powders with pure monomer (green) emission or pure excimer (red) emission, depending on the rate of precipitation from solutions. The synergistic steric effects are also beneficial to the solid-state luminescence quantum efficiency (30-36%). As a result of the differences in steric interactions and thus in the relative monomer vs excimer emission intensity, each complex of 2a-2c performs a two-step luminescence mechanochromism and vapochromism with different color patterns. This work provides an intriguing example of steric engineering of Pt(II) complexes toward highly emissive molecular solids with high-contrast mechanochromic and vapochromic luminescence.

Versatile Pt(II) Pyrazolate Complexes: Emission Tuning via Interplay of Chelate Designs and Stacking Assemblies

Three homoleptic Pt(II) metal complexes [Pt(im^Pz)₂] (1), [Pt(imⁱz)₂] (2), and [Pt(im^Mz)₂] (3) were synthesized from the treatment of Pt(DMSO)₂Cl₂ and functional imidazolyl pyrazole in refluxing tetrahydrofuran (THF). Alternatively, the heteroleptic Pt(II) complexes [Pt(im^Pz)(fppz)] (4), [Pt(imⁱz)(fppz)] (5), and [Pt(im^Mz)(fppz)] (6) were obtained from the treatment of a common intermediate [Pt(fppzH)Cl₂] with a corresponding imidazolyl chelate. Pt(II) complexes 1, 2, and 5 were studied by single-crystal X-ray diffraction to reveal the corresponding packing arrangement in their crystal lattices, among which both homoleptic complexes 1 and 2 formed monomeric species, while heteroleptic 5 aligned as a dimer with a nonbonding Pt···Pt contact of 3.574 Å. Subsequent photophysical examinations showed that the homoleptic 1-3 and heteroleptic 4-6 exhibited the structured sky-blue ππ* emission and structureless light-green-emitting metal-metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MMLCT) emission in the solid state, respectively. A shortened Pt···Pt interaction of approximately 0.34-0.35 nm was confirmed in thin films of all heteroleptic Pt(II) complexes 4-6 by grazing-incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXD) analyses. Finally, Pt(II) complex 6 was employed as a dopant in the fabrication of organic light-emitting diode (OLED) devices with varied doping ratios, among which OLEDs with only 1 wt % 6 in the SimCP host exhibited a maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 5.8% and CIE_x,y values of 0.20, 0.31. In contrast, OLEDs using a nondoped architecture (i.e., 100% of 6 in the emitting layer (EML)) achieved a maximum EQE of 26.8%, current efficiency (CE) of 91.7 cd A^-1, and power efficiency (PE) of 80.1 lm·W^-1 and CIE_x,y values of 0.41, 0.55, manifesting their versatility in various degrees of stacking assemblies and hence facile color-tuning capability on OLEDs.

Ratiometric dual fluorescence tridurylboron thermometers with tunable measurement ranges and colors

Noncontact ratiometric fluorescent thermometers have received great interests in recent years. Besides being a sensitive and easily observable detection signal, the ratiometric dual fluorescence are also highly accurate and resistable to interference. However, organic molecular thermometers with such fluorescence property are very rare, and their measurement ranges and colors are limited. In this work, a series of ratiometric dual fluorescent tridurylboron thermometers, with tunable measurement ranges and colors, are designed and synthesized. The measurement ranges of the thermometers are -20 °C-40 °C, -10 °C-50 °C and -25 °C-30 °C in solid polymeric systems, and -50 °C-100 °C and -30 °C-110 °C in liquid organic solvent. With decreasing temperature, the fluorescence colors of tridurylboron-MOE thermometers are from green yellow to yellow red, green to green yellow, blue to green. This study provides a novel strategy for developing tunable ratiometric dual fluoresence organic molecular thermometers.

Highly Efficient Phosphorescent Tetradentate Platinum(II) Complexes Containing Fused 6/5/6 Metallocycles

A series of neutral tetradentate Pt(II) complexes with fused 6/5/6 metallocycles and biphenyl (bp)-containing ligands have been designed and synthesized. All bridging atoms adopt nitrogens designed as an acridinyl group (Ac), an aza acridinyl group (AAc), and an aza carbazolyl group (ACz), which can effectively tune their LUMO energy levels. Their HOMO energy levels can be well-controlled through molecular modifications on the bp moieties with electron-donating and electron-withdrawing groups. These molecular modifications also have profound effects on the electrochemical and photophysical properties and photostabilities of the Pt(II) complexes. The ground-states and excited states are systematically studied by density functional theory (DFT), time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT), and natural transition orbital (NTO) calculations. All the Pt(II) complexes exhibit admixed ³(LC/MLCT) characters in T₁ states with various proportions, which are strongly structure-dependent. These 6/5/6 Pt(II) complexes demonstrate high quantum efficiencies in dichloromethane solutions (Φ_PL = 27-51%) and in doped PMMA films (Φ_PL = 36-52%) at room temperature with short luminescence lifetimes of 1.6-9.5 μs and 7.6-9.0 μs, respectively. They emit green light with dominant peaks of 512-529 nm in solutions and 512-524 nm in doped PMMA films, respectively. Importantly, Pt(bp-2) exhibits highly stable emission colors with the same dominant peaks at 512 nm in various matrixes and also demonstrates a long photostability lifetime, LT₈₀, at 80% of initial luminance, of 190 min, which is doped in polystyrene films (5 wt %) excited by UV light of 375 nm at 500 W/m². These studies indicate that these 6/5/6 Pt(II) complexes can act as good phosphorescent emitters for OLED applications and should provide a viable route for the development of efficient and stable Pt(II)-based phosphorescent emitters.

Tetradentate Gold(III) Complexes as Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence (TADF) Emitters: Microwave-Assisted Synthesis and High-Performance OLEDs with Long Operational Lifetime

Structurally robust tetradentate gold(III)-emitters have potent material applications but are rare and unprecedented for those displaying thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF). Herein, a novel synthetic route leading to the preparation of highly emissive, charge-neutral tetradentate [C^C^N^C] gold(III) complexes with 5-5-6-membered chelate rings has been developed through microwave-assisted C-H bond activation. These complexes show high thermal stability and with emission origin (³ IL, ³ ILCT, and TADF) tuned by varying the substituents of the C^C^N^C ligand. With phenoxazine/diphenylamine substituent, we prepared the first tetradentate gold(III) complexes that are TADF emitters with emission quantum yields of up to 94 % and emission lifetimes of down to 0.62 μs in deoxygenated toluene. These tetradentate Au^III TADF emitters showed good performance in vacuum-deposited OLEDs with maximum EQEs of up to 25 % and LT₉₅ of up to 5280 h at 100 cd m^-2 .

A facile way to obtain near-infrared room-temperature phosphorescent soft materials based on Bodipy dyes

Research on pure organic room-temperature phosphorescent (RTP) materials has made great advances but near-infrared (NIR) RTP emitting materials are still rare. Novel amorphous acrylamide copolymers containing iodine substituted borondipyrromethene (Bodipy) were prepared to obtain strong absorption in the visible region and moderate RTP in the NIR region with much larger Stokes shift than the fluorescence emission of traditional Bodipy dyes. Expensive metals and crystallization were left out to avoid biotoxicity and strict preparation conditions. Monoiodo and diiodo-Bodipy derivatives were both designed to study the substitution effect of iodine atoms. Photophysical properties, phosphorescence quantum yield and lifetime were characterized. Gels with NIR RTP emission were facilely prepared with the incorporation of ureidopyrimidone (UPy) and N,N'-methylenebisacrylamide (MBAA). The mechanical properties of the gels were measured using a rheometer and the results showed that the gels displayed fast self-healing ability due to the strong quadruple hydrogen bonding between UPy moieties.

Luminescence of mononuclear Pt(ii) complexes with glycolate: external stimuli-induced excimer emission changes to oligomer emissions

Trihydrate crystals of novel Pt^II complexes [Pt^II(bpy)(gl)] (bpy: 2,2′-bipyridine; Hgl⁻: glycolate) show excimer emission changes to two kinds of oligomer emissions depending on the type of external stimuli.

Solvation-dependent switching of solid-state luminescence of a fluorinated aromatic tetrapyrazole

Creating stimuli-responsive materials with switchable solid-state luminescence remains a challenge. We report that the solvation of a novel organic fluorophore can be utilized to prepare such a material, which emits in the blue (442-446 nm) region when wet and in the green (497-503 nm) region when dry.
