Abstract
Ligand coupling on hypervalent main group elements has emerged as a pivotal methodology for the synthesis of functionalized N-heteroaromatic compounds in recent years due to the avoidance of transition metals and the mildness of the reaction conditions. In this direction, the reaction of N-heteroaryl sulfur(IV) and N-heteroaryl phosphorus(V) compounds has been well studied. However, the ligand coupling of sulfur(VI) is still underdeveloped and the reaction of alkyl N-heteroarylsulfones is still elusive, which does not match the high status of sulfones as the chemical chameleons in organic synthesis. Here we present a ligand coupling-enabled formal SO2 extrusion of fluoroalkyl 2-azaheteroarylsulfones under the promotion of Grignard reagents, which not only enriches the chemistry of sulfones, but also provides a novel and practical synthetic tool towards N-heteroaromatic fluoroalkylation.

Abstract
In recent years, a variety of cycloalkyl groups with quaternary carbons, in particular cyclopropyl and cyclobutyl trifluoromethyl groups, have emerged as promising bioisosteres in drug-like molecules. The modular installation of such bioisosteres remains challenging to synthetic chemists. Alkyl sulfinate reagents have been developed as radical precursors to prepare functionalized heterocycles with the desired alkyl bioisosteres. However, the innate (radical) reactivity of this transformation poses reactivity and regioselectivity challenges for the functionalization of any aromatic or heteroaromatic scaffold. Here we showcase the ability of alkyl sulfinates to engage in sulfurane-mediated C(sp3)-C(sp2) cross-coupling, thereby allowing for programmable and stereospecific installation of these alkyl bioisosteres. The ability of this method to simplify retrosynthetic analysis is exemplified by the improved synthesis of multiple medicinally relevant scaffolds. Experimental studies and theoretical calculations for the mechanism of this sulfur chemistry reveal a ligand-coupling trend under alkyl Grignard activation via the sulfurane intermediate, stabilized by solvation of tetrahydrofuran.

Abstract
Ni-catalyzed enantioselective hydrofunctionalizations of conjugated dienes are particularly demanding reactions to devise because they require not only addressing the inherent challenges associated with the development of an enantioselective transformation but also overcoming all other aspects of selective catalysis (chemoselectivity, regioselectivity, diastereoselectivity, etc.). However, the value-added nature of the chiral allylic and homoallylic derivatives obtained by these methods, the lack of efficient alternatives, and the use of an earth-abundant first-row transition metal have led to renewed interest over the past decade. In this Perspective, we give an overview of the developments in this field, from the original findings (often dating back to the last century) to the most recent contributions. Emphasis is placed on the nature of the hydrofunctionalization agent (C(sp), C(sp2), C(sp3), N, P, or O).

Abstract
We report the formation of zinc reagents by the reaction of styrylsulfonium salts with zinc powder. Transition metals and other additives are not required for promoting zincation. Zincation tolerates a variety of sensitive functional groups, including esters, bromides, and boronic esters, and proceeds with complete retention of stereochemistry. This method presents a practical approach to the formation of zinc reagents that can be used in a variety of functionalizations, such as halogenation, carboxylation, and Negishi cross-couplings.

Abstract
Herein, we report the transition-metal-free O-arylation of alcohols and phenols with S-arylphenothiaziniums, which can be easily synthesized from boronic acids. Aryl substituents derived from arylboronic acids were selectively introduced into the hydroxy groups in alcohols and phenols, and a variety of aryl ethers were synthesized. This selectivity is supported by theoretical calculations.

Abstract
An efficient cobalt-catalyzed geometrical isomerization of 1,3-dienes is described. In the combination of a CoCl2 precatalyst with an amido-diphosphine-oxazoline ligand, the geometrical isomerization of E/Z mixtures of 1,3-dienes proceed in a stereoconvergent manner, affording (E) isomers in high stereoselectivity. This facile transformation features a broad substrate scope with good functional group tolerance and could be scaled up to the gram scale smoothly with a catalyst loading of 1 mol %.

Abstract
Herein, we report the development of a transition-metal-free oxidative C(sp2)-C(sp2) coupling of readily available boronic acids and organolithiums via phenothiazinium ions. Various biaryl, styrene, and diene derivatives were obtained using this reaction system. The key to this process is N-methylphenothiazine S-oxide (PTZSO), which allows efficient conversion of boronic acids to phenothiazinium ions. The mechanism of phenothiazinium formation using PTZSO was investigated using theoretical calculations and experiments, which provided insight into the unique reactivity of PTZSO.

Abstract

S-Aryl dibenzothiophenium salts, obtained through a highly
regioselective C–H sulfenylation of o-benzyl-protected phenols,
are used as precursors of 6H-benzo[c]chromenes. The
reaction starts with a photocatalytically triggered single-electron transfer to the
sulfonium salt, which promotes the formation of an aryl radical via selective mesolitic
cleavage of the S–Arexo bond. Mechanistic studies reveal that this
initial radical species cyclizes following a kinetically favored 5-exo-trig pathway.
Subsequent ring expansion, favored by rearomatization, delivers the desired tricyclic
systems.

Abstract

Despite
the many methods available for the synthesis of furans,
few methods remain that allow for the custom-made assembly of fully
substituted furans. Here we report a powerful protocol to rapidly
construct tetrasubstituted, orthogonally functionalized furans under
mild reaction conditions. The developed method involves the regioselective
ring-opening of readily available 2,5-dihydrothiophenes followed by
an oxidative cyclization to provide the heterocycle. The selective
oxidation at sulfur is promoted by N-chlorosuccinimide
as an inexpensive reagent and proceeds at ambient temperature in high
yield within 30 min. The obtained furans serve as exceptionally versatile
intermediates and were shown to participate in a series of valuable
postmodifications. The fate of the initial sulfonium intermediate
was investigated by mechanistic experiments, and computational studies
revealed the existence of an unprecedented Pummerer-type rearrangement.
The potential for organic synthesis is highlighted by the total synthesis
of bisabolene sesquiterpenoids (pleurotins A, B, and D).

Moreover, dienes are important targets for synthetic chemists, due to their ability to give access to a wide range of functional group transformations, including a broad range of C-C bond-forming processes. Therefore, the stereoselective preparation of dienes have attracted much attention over the past decades, and the search for new synthetic protocols continues unabated. The aim of this review is to give an overview of the diverse methodologies that have emerged in the last decade, with a focus on the synthetic processes that meet the requirements of efficiency and sustainability of modern organic chemistry.

Abstract
Whereas metal-mediated cross-couplings find broad applications in syntheses of medicines, agrochemicals, and natural products, these powerful transformations have limited utility for Lewis basic substrates (e.g., heteroarenes), wherein basic functionalities coordinate to the metal center, hindering product formation. In this context, we have developed a transition-metal-free cross-coupling reaction mediated by sulfur(IV). This method leverages the ability of simple alkyl sulfinyl(IV) chlorides to form bipyramidal sulfurane complexes to drive a pseudo ‘reductive elimination’ process from the hypervalent sulfur atom, thereby readily providing unsymmetrical biheteroarenes.1 Introduction2 Historical Sulfurane(IV)-Mediated Couplings3 Unsymmetrical Heterocycle Cross-Couplings4 Conclusion

Abstract
An S-selective arylation of pyridylsulfides with good functional group tolerance was developed. To demonstrate synthetic utility, the resulting pyridylsulfonium salts were used in a scalable transition-metal-free coupling protocol, yielding functionalized bipyridines with extensive functional group tolerance. This modular methodology permits selective introduction of functional groups from commercially available pyridyl halides, furnishing symmetrical and unsymmetrical 2,2'- and 2,3'-bipyridines. Iterative application of the methodology enabled the synthesis of a functionalized terpyridine with three different pyridine components.

Abstract
Trifluoromethyl sulfoxides are a new class of trifluoromethylthiolating reagent. The sulfoxides engage in metal-free C-H trifluoromethylthiolation with a range of (hetero)arenes. The method is also applicable to the functionalization of important compound classes, such as ligand derivatives and polyaromatics, and in the late-stage trifluoromethylthiolation of medicines and agrochemicals. The isolation and characterization of a sulfonium salt intermediate supports an interrupted Pummerer reaction mechanism.

Abstract
The Suzuki-Miyaura coupling is a fundamentally important transformation in modern organic synthesis. The development of new reaction modes for new chemical accessibility and higher synthetic efficiency is still the consistent pursuance in this field. An efficient Suzuki-Miyaura coupling enabled by a controllable 1,4-palladium migration was realized to afford stereodefined multisubstituted olefins and 1,3-dienes. The reaction exhibits remarkable broad substrate scope, excellent functional-group tolerance, versatile conversion with obtained products, and easy scalability. The practicality of this method is highlighted by the aggregation-induced emission feature of the produced olefins and 1,3-dienes, as well as the capability of affording geometric isomer pairs with a marked difference on photoluminescent quantum yield values.

Abstract
Despite the tremendous utilities of metal-mediated cross-couplings in modern organic chemistry, coupling reactions involving nitrogenous heteroarenes remain a challenging undertaking - coordination of Lewis basic atoms into metal centers often necessitate elevated temperature, high catalyst loading, etc. Herein, we report a sulfur (IV) mediated cross-coupling amendable for the efficient synthesis of heteroaromatic substrates. Addition of heteroaryl nucleophiles to a simple, readily-accessible alkyl sulfinyl (IV) chloride allows formation of a trigonal bipyramidal sulfurane intermediate. Reductive elimination therefrom provides bis-heteroaryl products in a practical and efficient fashion.

Abstract
A metal-free, oxidative coupling of phenols with various nucleophiles, including arenes, 1,3-diketones and other phenols, is reported. Cross-coupling is mediated by a sulfoxide which inverts the reactivity of the phenol partner. Crucially, the process shows high selectivity for cross-versus homo-coupling and allows efficient access to a variety of aromatic scaffolds including biaryls, benzofurans and, through an iterative procedure, aromatic oligomers. A metal-free, oxidative coupling of phenols with various nucleophiles, including arenes, 1,3-diketones and other phenols, is reported.![]()
