Disclosing Interfaces of ZnO Nanocrystals Using Dynamic Nuclear Polarization: Sol-Gel versus Organometallic Approach

Direct Readout of Homo- vs Heterochiral Ligand Shell of Quantum Dots

The chiroptical activity of various semiconductor inorganic nanocrystalline materials has typically been tested using circular dichroism or circularly polarized luminescence. Herein, we report on a high-throughput screening method for identifying and differentiating chiroptically active quantum-sized ZnO crystals using Raman spectroscopy combined with principal component analysis. ZnO quantum dots (QDs) coated by structurally diverse homo- and heterochiral aminoalcoholate ligands (cis- and trans-1-amino-2-indanolate, 2-amino-1-phenylethanolate, and diphenyl-2-pyrrolidinemethanolate) were prepared using the one-pot self-supporting organometallic procedure and then extensively studied toward the identification of specific Raman fingerprints and spectral variations. The direct comparison between the spectra demonstrates that it is very difficult to make definite recognition and identification between QDs coated with enantiomers based only on the differences in the respective Raman bands' position shifts and their intensities. However, the applied approach involving the principal component analysis performed on the Raman spectra allows the simultaneous differentiation and identification of the studied QDs. The first and second principal components explain 98, 97, 97, and 87% of the variability among the studied families of QDs and demonstrate the possibility of using the presented method as a qualitative assay. Thus, the reported multivariate approach paves the way for simultaneous differentiation and identification of chirotopically active semiconductor nanocrystals.

Shelf-Stable Green and Blue Quantum Dot Light-Emitting Diodes with High Efficiencies

Quantum dot light-emitting diodes (QLEDs) are promising electroluminescent devices for next-generation display and solid-state lighting technologies. Achieving shelf-stable and high-performance QLEDs is crucial for their practical applications. However, the successful demonstration of shelf-stable QLEDs with high efficiencies is limited to red devices. Here, we developed a solution-based amine ligand exchange strategy to passivate the surfaces of optical ZnO (O-ZnO) nanocrystals, leading to suppressed exciton quenching at the green and blue QD/oxide interface. Furthermore, we designed new bilayered oxide electron-transporting layers consisting of amine-modified O-ZnO/conductive ZnO. This design simultaneously offers suppressed interfacial exciton quenching and sufficient electron transport in the green and blue QLEDs, resulting in shelf-stable green and blue devices with high efficiencies. Our devices exhibit neglectable changes in external quantum efficiencies (maximum external quantum efficiencies of 22.4% for green and 14.3% for blue) after storage for 270 days. Our work represents a step forward in the practical applications of QLED technology.

On the Fate of Lithium Ions in Sol-Gel Derived Zinc Oxide Nanocrystals

Among diverse chemical synthetic approaches to zinc oxide nanocrystals (ZnO NCs), ubiquitous inorganic sol-gel methodology proved crucial for advancements in ZnO-based nanoscience. Strikingly, unlike the exquisite level of control over morphology and size dispersity achieved in ZnO NC syntheses, the purity of the crystalline phase, as well as the understanding of the surface structure and the character of the inorganic-organic interface, have been limited to vague descriptors until very recently. Herein, ZnO NCs applying the standard sol-gel synthetic protocol are synthesized with zinc acetate and lithium hydroxide and tracked the integration of lithium (Li) cations into the interior and exterior of nanoparticles by combining various techniques, including advanced solid-state NMR methods. In contrast to common views, it is demonstrated that Li+ ions remain kinetically trapped in the inorganic core, enter into a shallow subsurface layer, and generate "swelling" of the surface and interface regions. Thus, this work enabled both the determination of the NCs' structural imperfections and an in-depth understanding of the unappreciated role of the Li+ ions in impacting the doping and the passivation of sol-gel-derived ZnO nanomaterials.

Transition-Metal-Based Nanozymes: Synthesis, Mechanisms of Therapeutic Action, and Applications in Cancer Treatment

Cancer, as one of the leading causes of death worldwide, drives the advancement of cutting-edge technologies for cancer treatment. Transition-metal-based nanozymes emerge as promising therapeutic nanodrugs that provide a reference for cancer therapy. In this review, we present recent breakthrough nanozymes for cancer treatment. First, we comprehensively outline the preparation strategies involved in creating transition-metal-based nanozymes, including hydrothermal method, solvothermal method, chemical reduction method, biomimetic mineralization method, and sol-gel method. Subsequently, we elucidate the catalytic mechanisms (catalase (CAT)-like activities), peroxidase (POD)-like activities), oxidase (OXD)-like activities) and superoxide dismutase (SOD)-like activities) of transition-metal-based nanozymes along with their activity regulation strategies such as morphology control, size manipulation, modulation, composition adjustment and surface modification under environmental stimulation. Furthermore, we elaborate on the diverse applications of transition-metal-based nanozymes in anticancer therapies encompassing radiotherapy (RT), chemodynamic therapy (CDT), photodynamic therapy (PDT), photothermal therapy (PTT), sonodynamic therapy (SDT), immunotherapy, and synergistic therapy. Finally, the challenges faced by transition-metal-based nanozymes are discussed alongside future research directions. The purpose of this review is to offer scientific guidance that will enhance the clinical applications of nanozymes based on transition metals.

Rational Design of Dinitroxide Polarizing Agents for Dynamic Nuclear Polarization to Enhance Overall NMR Sensitivity

We evaluate the overall sensitivity gains provided by a series of eighteen nitroxide biradicals for dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) solid-state NMR at 9.4 T and 100 K, including eight new biradicals. We find that in the best performing group the factors contributing to the overall sensitivity gains, namely the DNP enhancement, the build-up time, and the contribution factor, often compete with each other leading to very similar overall sensitivity across a range of biradicals. NaphPol and HydroPol are found to provide the best overall sensitivity factors, in organic and aqueous solvents respectively. One of the new biradicals, AMUPolCbm, provides high sensitivity for all three solvent formulations measured here, and can be considered to be a "universal" polarizing agent.

AsymPol-TEKs as efficient polarizing agents for MAS-DNP in glass matrices of non-aqueous solvents

Two polarizing agents from the AsymPol family, AsymPol-TEK and cAsymPol-TEK (methyl-free version) are introduced for MAS-DNP applications in non-aqueous solvents. The performance of these new biradicals is rationalized in detail using a combination of electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, density functional theory, molecular dynamics and quantitative MAS-DNP spin dynamics simulations. By slightly modifying the experimental protocol to keep the sample temperature low at insertion, we are able to obtain reproducable DNP-NMR data with 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane (TCE) at 100 K, which facilitates optimization and comparison of different polarizing agents. At intermediate magnetic fields, AsymPol-TEK and cAsymPol-TEK provide 1.5 to 3-fold improvement in sensitivity compared to TEKPol, one of the most widely used polarizing agents for organic solvents, with significantly shorter DNP build-up times of ∼1 s and ∼2 s at 9.4 and 14.1 T respectively. In the course of the work, we also isolated and characterized two diastereoisomers that can form during the synthesis of AsymPol-TEK; their difference in performance is described and discussed. Finally, the advantages of the AsymPol-TEKs are demonstrated by recording 2D 13C-13C correlation experiments at natural 13C-abundance of proton-dense microcrystals and by polarizing the surface of ZnO nanocrystals (NCs) coated with diphenyl phosphate ligands. For those experiments, cAsymPol-TEK yielded a three-fold increase in sensitivity compared to TEKPol, corresponding to a nine-fold time saving.

Factors controlling the structure of alkylzinc amidinates: on the role of N-substituents

Despite various applications of alkylzinc complexes supported by N,N-bidentate ligands in chemistry and materials science, the corresponding organozinc amidinates still represent an insufficiently explored area. To gain a more in-depth understanding of factors controlling the structure and stability of alkylzinc amidinates, we selected benzamidinate and N,N'-diphenylformamidinate ligands as model N,N'-unsubstituted and N,N'-diaryl substituted ligands, respectively, to systematically modify the secondary coordination sphere of the Zn center. A series of new alkylzinc amidinates has been synthesized and their molecular structures identified in both the solid state (single-crystal X-ray crystallography) and solution (NMR and FTIR spectroscopy). The results indicate that [RZnL]_x-type amidinate moieties are essentially unstable and tend to undergo Schlenk equilibria-mediated ligand scrambling leading to more thermodynamically stable non-stoichiometric [R₂Zn₃L₄]- and [R₃Zn₄L₅]-type complexes. This process is significantly influenced by the secondary coordination sphere noncovalent interactions as well as the steric hindrance provided by both zinc-bounded alkyl groups and the N-substituents.

Electrochemically Stable Ligands of ZnO Electron-Transporting Layers for Quantum-Dot Light-Emitting Diodes

Thin films of ZnO nanocrystals are actively pursued as electron-transporting layers (ETLs) in quantum-dot light-emitting diodes (QLEDs). However, the developments of ZnO-based ETLs are highly engineering oriented and the design of ZnO-based ETLs remains empirical. Here, we identified a previously overlooked efficiency-loss channel associated with the ZnO-based ETLs: i.e., interfacial exciton quenching induced by surface-bound ethanol. Accordingly, we developed a general surface-treatment procedure to replace the redox-active surface-bound ethanol with electrochemically inert alkali carboxylates. Characterization results show that the surface treatment procedure does not change other key properties of the ETLs, such as the conductance and work function. Our single-variable experimental design unambiguously demonstrates that improving the electrochemical stabilities of the ZnO ETLs leads to QLEDs with a higher efficiency and longer operational lifetime. Our work provides a crucial guideline to design ZnO-based ETLs for optoelectronic devices.

Secured Nanosynthesis-Deposition Aerosol Process for Composite Thin Films Incorporating Highly Dispersed Nanoparticles

Application of nanocomposites in daily life requires not only small nanoparticles (NPs) well dispersed in a matrix, but also a manufacturing process that is mindful of the operator and the environment. Avoiding any exposure to NPs is one such way, and direct liquid reaction-injection (DLRI) aims to fulfill this need. DLRI is based on the controlled in situ synthesis of NPs from the decomposition of suitable organometallic precursors in conditions that are compatible with a pulsed injection mode of an aerosol into a downstream process. Coupled with low-pressure plasma, DLRI produces nanocomposite with homogeneously well-dispersed small nanoparticles that in the particular case of ZnO-DLC nanocomposite exhibit unique properties. DLRI favorably compares with the direct liquid injection of ex situ formed NPs. The exothermic hydrolysis reaction of the organometallic precursor at the droplet-gas interface leads to the injection of small and highly dispersed NPs and, consequently, the deposition of fine and controlled distribution in the nanocomposite. The scope of DLRI nanosynthesis has been extended to several metal oxides such as zinc, tin, tungsten, and copper to generalize the concept. Hence, DLRI is an attractive method to synthesize, inject, and deposit nanoparticles and meets the prevention and atom economy requirements of green chemistry.

A modular design approach to polymer-coated ZnO nanocrystals

Hybrid materials based on inorganic nanocrystals with organic polymers feature peculiar and fascinating properties and various applications. However, there is still a need for simple synthesis procedures that provide precise control over the polymer/nanocrystal microstructure of these materials. Herein, a novel organometallic approach to polymer-coated ZnO nanocrystals was developed. The presented method merges the initial ring-opening polymerization of ϵ-caprolactone mediated by an organozinc alkoxide initiator and an air-promoted transformation of the resulting macromolecular organozinc species. This one-pot procedure results in quantum-sized ZnO crystals with a core diameter of ca 3 nm coated by poly(ϵ-caprolactone) covalently bonded to the surface. Overall, the ability to create well-defined hybrid composites should provide a unique ability to access various nanosystems.

Binding Between Antibiotics and Polystyrene Nanoparticles Examined by NMR

Elucidating the interactions between plastic nanoparticles and small molecules is important to understanding these interactions as they occur in polluted waterways. For example, plastic that breaks down into micro- and nanoscale particles will interact with small molecule pollutants that are also present in contaminated waters. Other components of natural water, such as dissolved organic matter, will also influence these interactions. Here we use a collection of complementary NMR techniques to examine the binding between polystyrene nanoparticles and three common antibiotics, belonging to a class of molecules that are expected to be common in polluted water. Through examination of proton NMR signal intensity, relaxation times, saturation-transfer difference (STD) NMR, and competition STD-NMR, we find that the antibiotics have binding strengths in the order amoxicillin < metronidazole ≪ levofloxacin. Levofloxacin is able to compete for binding sites, preventing the other two antibiotics from binding. The presence of tannic acid disrupts the binding between levofloxacin and the polystyrene nanoparticles, but does not influence the binding between metronidazole and these nanoparticles.

Deep-UV laser direct writing of photoluminescent ZnO submicron patterns: an example of nanoarchitectonics concept

Micro- and nanopatterning of metal oxide materials is an important process to develop electronic or optoelectronic devices. ZnO is a material of choice for its semiconducting and photoluminescence properties. In the frame of the nanoarchitectonics concept, we have developed and investigated a new process that relies on direct writing laser patterning in the Deep-UV (DUV) range to prepare photoluminescent microstructures of ZnO at room temperature, under air. This process is based on a synthesis of colloidal ZnO nanocrystals (NCs) with a careful choice of the ligands on the surface to obtain an optimal (i) stability of the colloids, (ii) redissolution of the non-insolated parts and (iii) cross-linking of the DUV-insolated parts. The mechanisms of photocrosslinking are studied by different spectroscopic methods. This room temperature process preserves the photoluminescence properties of the NCs and the wavelength used in DUV allows to reach a sub-micrometer resolution, which opens new perspectives for the integration of microstructures on flexible substrates for optoelectronic applications.

From a Well-Defined Organozinc Precursor to Diverse Luminescent Coordination Polymers Based on Zn(II)-Quinolinate Building Units Interconnected by Mixed Ligand Systems

Introduction of photoactive building blocks into mixed-ligand coordination polymers appears to be a promising way to produce new advanced luminescent materials. However, rational design and self-assembly of the multi-component supramolecular systems is challenging from both a conceptual and synthetic perspective. Here, we report exploratory studies that investigate the potential of [Zn(q)₂]₂[tBuZn(OH)]₂ complex (q = deprotonated 8-hydroxyquinoline) as an organozinc precursor as well as a mixed-ligand synthetic strategy for the preparation of new luminescent coordination polymers (CPs). As a result we present three new 2D mixed-ligand Zn(II)-quinolinate coordination polymers which are based on various zinc quinolinate secondary building units interconnected by two different organic linker types, i.e., deprotonated 4,4'-oxybisbenzoic acid (H₂obc) as a flexible dicarboxylate linker and/or selected bipyridines (bipy). Remarkably, using the title organozinc precursors in a combination with H₂obc and 4,4'-bipyridine, a novel molecular zinc quinolinate building unit, [Zn₄(q)₆(bipy)₂(obc)₂], was obtained which self-assembled into a chain-type hydrogen-bonded network. The application of the organometallic precursor allowed for its direct reaction with the selected ligands at ambient temperature, avoiding the use of both solvothermal conditions and additional base reagents. In turn, the reaction involving Zn(NO₃)₂, as a classical inorganic precursor, in a combination with H₂obc and bipy led to a novel 1D coordination polymer [Zn₂(q)₂(NO₃)₂(bipy)]. While the presence of H₂obc was essential for the formation of this coordination polymer, this ditopic linker was not incorporated into the isolated product, which indicates its templating behavior. The reported compounds were characterized by single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis as well as UV-Vis and photoluminescence spectroscopy.

Anisotropic growth of ZnO nanoparticles driven by the structure of amine surfactants: the role of surface dynamics in nanocrystal growth

Herein, we elucidate the key role of amine surfactants in the controlled anisotropic growth of ZnO nanoparticles that is achieved under mild conditions by organometallic hydrolysis. The structuring influence of alkyl substituents on the nitrogen atom of amines is jointly analyzed theoretically by DFT modeling, and experimentally by multinuclear NMR (¹H, ¹³C and ¹⁷O) spectroscopy. We demonstrate that in initial steps leading to the growth of colloidal ZnO particles, the nature of molecular species that are involved in the solution strongly depends on the structure of the amine surfactant. By using tertiary, secondary or primary amines, no or weak adducts between the amine and zinc, or stable adducts, or adduct oligomers were identified, respectively. Afterwards, following the course of the reaction, the dynamic behavior of the amines on the grown ZnO nanocrystal surfaces is also strongly correlated with their structure. We identified that in the presence of tertiary, secondary or primary amines, no significant [Zn⋯N] adsorption, or surface adsorption with notable surface mobility, or a very strong adsorption is achieved, respectively. The last case, primary amines, significantly involves the structuring of a hydrogen bonding network. Therefore, such surface dynamic behavior has a predominant role in driving the nanocrystal growth, and orienting the ZnO material final morphology. By forming hydrogen bonds at the nanoparticle surface during the growth process, primary amines specifically lead to the formation of nanorods. Conversely, isotropic nanoparticles and aggregates are obtained when secondary and tertiary amines are used, respectively. These findings shed light on the role of weak surface interactions, herein H-bonding, that rule the growth of nano-objects and are as such crucial to identify, study, and control for achieving progress in nanoscience.

Molecular-Level Insight into Semiconductor Nanocrystal Surfaces

Semiconductor nanocrystals exhibit attractive photophysical properties for use in a variety of applications. Advancing the efficiency of nanocrystal-based devices requires a deep understanding of the physical defects and electronic states that trap charge carriers. Many of these states reside at the nanocrystal surface, which acts as an interface between the semiconductor lattice and the molecular capping ligands. While a detailed structural and electronic understanding of the surface is required to optimize nanocrystal properties, these materials are at a technical disadvantage: unlike molecular structures, semiconductor nanocrystals lack a specific chemical formula and generally must be characterized as heterogeneous ensembles. Therefore, in order for the field to improve current nanocrystal-based technologies, a creative approach to gaining a "molecular-level" picture of nanocrystal surfaces is required. To this end, an expansive toolbox of experimental and computational techniques has emerged in recent years. In this Perspective, we critically evaluate the insight into surface structure and reactivity that can be gained from each of these techniques and demonstrate how their strategic combination is already advancing our molecular-level understanding of nanocrystal surface chemistry.

Unveiling the Structure and Reactivity of Fatty-Acid Based (Nano)materials Thanks to Efficient and Scalable 17O and 18O-Isotopic Labeling Schemes

Fatty acids are ubiquitous in biological systems and widely used in materials science, including for the formulation of drugs and the surface-functionalization of nanoparticles. However, important questions regarding the structure and reactivity of these molecules are still to be elucidated, including their mode of binding to certain metal cations or materials surfaces. In this context, we have developed novel, efficient, user-friendly, and cost-effective synthetic protocols based on ball-milling, for the 17O and 18O isotopic labeling of two key fatty acids which are widely used in (nano)materials science, namely stearic and oleic acid. Labeled molecules were analyzed by 1H and 13C solution NMR, IR spectroscopy, and mass spectrometry (ESI-TOF and LC-MS), as well as 17O solid state NMR (for the 17O labeled species). In both cases, the labeling procedures were scaled-up to produce up to gram quantities of 17O- or 18O-enriched molecules in just half-a-day, with very good synthetic yields (all ≥84%) and enrichment levels (up to an average of 46% per carboxylic oxygen). The 17O-labeled oleic acid was then used for the synthesis of a metal soap (Zn-oleate) and the surface-functionalization of ZnO nanoparticles (NPs), which were characterized for the first time by high-resolution 17O NMR (at 14.1 and 35.2 T). This allowed very detailed insight into (i) the coordination mode of the oleate ligand in Zn-oleate to be achieved (including information on Zn···O distances) and (ii) the mode of attachment of oleic-acid at the surface of ZnO (including novel information on its photoreactivity upon UV-irradiation). Overall, this work demonstrates the high interest of these fatty acid-enrichment protocols for understanding the structure and reactivity of a variety of functional (nano)materials systems using high resolution analyses like 17O NMR.

Prominence of the Instability of a Stabilizing Agent in the Changes in Physical State of a Hybrid Nanomaterial

Shaping ability of hybrid nanomaterials is a key point for their further use in devices. It is therefore crucial to control it. To this end, it is necessary that the macroscopic properties of the material remain constant over time. Here, we evidence by multinuclear Magic-Angle Spinning Nuclear Magnetic Resonance spectroscopic study including ¹⁷ O isotope exchange that for a ZnO-alkylamine hybrid material, the partial carbonation of amine into ammonium carbamate molecules is behind the conversion from highly viscous liquid to a powdery solid when exposed to air. This carbonation induces modification and reorganization of the organic shell around the nanocrystals and affects significantly the macroscopic properties of the material such as it physical state, its solubility and colloidal stability. This study, straightforwardly extendable, highlights that the nature of the functional chemical group allowing connecting the stabilizing agent (SA) to the surface of the nanoparticles is of tremendous importance especially if the SA is reactive with molecules present in the environment.

Unveiling Complexity of the Oxygenation of Aluminum Alkyls by the Isolation of Unique Alkylperoxide and Oxoalkoxide Compounds

While aluminum alkyls are often considered to be exemplary compounds of main-group organometallics and an in-depth understanding of their multifaceted chemistry is continually vital, the controlled oxygenation of organoaluminum complexes still remains a largely undeveloped area. In the course of our systematic studies on the relationship between the Lewis acidity of metal centers and noncovalent interactions in the secondary coordination sphere, we report the oxygenation of dialkylaluminum complexes incorporating a pyrrole–ester ligand, as purposefully selected dormant Lewis acidic octet-compliant model compounds, and the isolation and characterization of a new, dimeric aluminum tert-butylperoxide and an unique example of an aluminum oxoethoxide cluster. Our studies provide a more in-depth look at the diversity and complexity of the oxygenation chemistry of aluminum alkyls.

We report the reactions of dialkylaluminum complexes incorporating a pyrrole−ester ligand with dioxygen as well as the isolation of a novel aluminum tert-butylperoxide and an unique example of aluminum oxoethoxide. Our studies provide a more in-depth look at the diversity and complexity of the oxygenation chemistry of aluminum alkyls.

Improved Magnetization Transfers among Quadrupolar Nuclei in Two-Dimensional Homonuclear Correlation NMR Experiments Applied to Inorganic Network Structures

We demonstrate that supercycles of previously introduced two-fold symmetry dipolar recoupling schemes may be utilized successfully in homonuclear correlation nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy for probing proximities among half-integer spin quadrupolar nuclei in network materials undergoing magic-angle-spinning (MAS). These (SR221)M, (SR241)M, and (SR281)M recoupling sequences with M=3 and M=4 offer comparably efficient magnetization transfers in single-quantum–single-quantum (1Q–1Q) correlation NMR experiments under moderately fast MAS conditions, as demonstrated at 14.1 T and 24 kHz MAS in the contexts of 11B NMR on a Na2O–CaO–B2O3–SiO2 glass and 27Al NMR on the open framework aluminophosphate AlPO-CJ19 [(NH4)2Al4(PO4)4HPO4·H2O]. Numerically simulated magnetization transfers in spin–3/2 pairs revealed a progressively enhanced tolerance to resonance offsets and rf-amplitude errors of the recoupling pulses along the series (SR221)M< (SR241)M< (SR281)M for increasing differences in chemical shifts between the two nuclei. Nonetheless, for scenarios of a relatively minor chemical-shift dispersions (≲3 kHz), the (SR221)M supercycles perform best both experimentally and in simulations.

In Situ Preparation of Amphibious ZnO Quantum Dots with Blue Fluorescence Based on Hyperbranched Polymers and their Application in Bio-Imaging

A new strategy for preparing amphibious ZnO quantum dots (QDs) with blue fluorescence within hyper-branched poly(ethylenimine)s (HPEI) was proposed in this paper. By changing [Zn²⁺]/[OH^-] molar ratio and heating time, ZnO QDs with a quantum yields (QY) of 30% in ethanol were obtained. Benefiting from the amphibious property of HPEI, the ZnO/HPEI nanocomposites in ethanol could be dissolved in chloroform and water, acquiring a QY of 53%, chloroform and 11% in water. By this strategy, the ZnO/HPEI nano-composites could be applied in not only in optoelectronics, but also biomedical fields (such as bio-imaging and gene transfection). The bio-imaging application of water-soluble ZnO/HPEI nanocomposites was investigated and it was found that they could easily be endocytosed by the COS-7 cells, without transfection reagent, and they exhibited excellent biological imaging behavior.

ZnO nanocrystals derived from organometallic approach: Delineating the role of organic ligand shell on physicochemical properties and nano-specific toxicity

The surface organic ligands have profound effect on modulation of different physicochemical parameters as well as toxicological profile of semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs). Zinc oxide (ZnO) is one of the most versatile semiconductor material with multifarious potential applications and systematic approach to in-depth understand the interplay between ZnO NCs surface chemistry along with physicochemical properties and their nano-specific toxicity is indispensable for development of ZnO NCs-based devices and biomedical applications. To this end, we have used recently developed the one-pot self-supporting organometallic (OSSOM) approach as a model platform to synthesize a series of ZnO NCs coated with three different alkoxyacetate ligands with varying the ether tail length which simultaneously act as miniPEG prototypes. The ligand coating influence on ZnO NCs physicochemical properties including the inorganic core size, the hydrodynamic diameter, surface charge, photoluminescence (quantum yield and decay time) and ZnO NCs biological activity toward lung cells was thoroughly investigated. The resulting ZnO NCs with average core diameter of 4-5 nm and the hydrodynamic diameter of 8-13 nm exhibit high photoluminescence quantum yield reaching 33% and a dramatic slowing down of charge recombination up to 2.4 µs, which is virtually unaffected by the ligand's character. Nano-specific ZnO NCs-induced cytotoxicity was tested using MTT assay with normal (MRC-5) and cancer (A549) human lung cell lines. Noticeably, no negative effect has been observed up to the NCs concentration of 10 µg/mL and essentially very low negative toxicological impact could be noticed at higher concentrations. In the latter case, the MTT data analysis indicate that there is a subtle interconnection between inorganic core-organic shell dimensions and toxicological profile of ZnO NCs (strikingly, the NCs coated by the carboxylate bearing a medium ether chain length exhibit the lowest toxicity level). The results demonstrate that, when fully optimized, our organometallic self-supporting approach can be a highly promising method to obtain high-quality and bio-stable ligand-coated ZnO NCs.
