Red Fluorescence from Organic Microdots: Leveraging Foldamer-Linked Azobenzene for Enhanced Stability and Intensity in Bioimaging Applications

Azobenzene, while relevant, has faced constraints in biological system applications due to its suboptimal quantum yield and short-wavelength emission. This study presents a pioneering strategy for fabricating organic microdots by coupling foldamer-linked azobenzene, resulting in robust fluorescence intensity and stability, especially in aggregated states, thereby showing promise for bioimaging applications. Comprehensive experimental and computational examinations elucidate the mechanisms underpinning enhanced photostability and fluorescence efficacy. In vitro and in vivo evaluations disclose that the external layer of cis-azo-foldamer microdots performs a self-sacrificial function during photo-bleaching. Consequently, these red-fluorescent microdots demonstrate extraordinary structural and photochemical stabilities over extended periods. The conjugation of a β-peptide foldamer to the azobenzene chromophore through a glycine linker instigates a blue-shifted and amplified π*-n transition. Molecular dynamics simulations reveal that the aggregated state of cis-azo-foldamers fortifies the stability of cis isomers, thereby augmenting fluorescence efficiency. This investigation furnishes crucial insights into conceptualizing novel, biologically inspired materials, promising stable and enduring imaging applications, and carries implications for diverse arenas such as medical diagnostics, drug delivery, and sensing technologies.

Crystallization-induced emission from F-doped carbon dots

Herein, F-doped CDs with bright red SSF were synthesized by a solvothermal method using trifluoroethanol as the solvent and m-hydroxybenzaldehyde as the carbon source. Strong F-F interactions are vital for inducing crystallization, and solid luminescence is achieved by blocking the nonradiative energy dissipation pathways of crystalline organizations.

Visible Light Induced Exciton Dynamics and trans-to-cis Isomerization in Azobenzene Aggregates: Insights from Surface Hopping/Semiempirical Configuration Interaction Molecular Dynamics Simulations

Assemblies of photochromic molecules feature exciton states, which govern photochemical and photophysical processes in multichromophoric systems. Understanding the photoinduced dynamics of the assemblies requires nonadiabatic treatment involving multiple exciton states and numerous nuclear degrees of freedom, thus posing a challenge for simulations. In this work, we address this challenge for aggregates of azobenzene, a prototypical molecular switch, performing on-the-fly surface hopping calculations combined with semiempirical configuration interaction electronic structure and augmented with transition density matrix analysis to characterize exciton evolution. Specifically, we consider excitation of azobenzene tetramers in the nπ* absorption band located in the visible (blue) part of the electromagnetic spectrum, thus extending our recent work on dynamics after ππ* excitation corresponding to the ultraviolet region [Titov, J. Phys. Chem. C2023, 127, 13678-13688]. We find that the nπ* excitons, which are initially strongly localized by ground-state conformational disorder, undergo further (very strong) localization during short-time photodynamics. This excited-state localization process is extremely ultrafast, occurring within the first 10 fs of photodynamics. We observe virtually no exciton transfer of the localized excitons in the nπ* manifold. However, the transfer may occur via secondary pathways involving ππ* states or the ground state. Moreover, we find that the nπ* quantum yields of the trans-to-cis isomerization are reduced in the aggregated state.

Photoswitchable Enantioselective and Helix-Sense Controlled Living Polymerization

A pair of enantiomeric photoswitchable PdII catalysts, alkyne-PdII /LR-azo and alkyne-PdII /LS-azo , were prepared via the coordination of alkyne-PdII and azobenzene-modified phosphine ligands LR-azo and LS-azo . Owing to the cis-trans photoisomerization of the azobenzene moiety, alkyne-PdII /LR-azo and alkyne-PdII /LS-azo exhibited different polymerization activities, helix-sense selectivities, and enantioselectivities during the polymerization of isocyanide monomers under irradiation of different wavelength lights. Furthermore, the achiral isocyanide monomer A-1 could be polymerized efficiently using alkyne-PdII /LR-azo under dark condition in a living/controlled manner. Further, it generated single right-handed helical poly-A-1m (LR-azo ), confirmed by the circular dichroism spectra and atomic force microscopy images. However, the polymerization of A-1 almost could not be initiated under 420 nm light in identical conditions of dark condition. Moreover, the photoswitchable catalyst alkyne-PdII /LR-azo exhibited high enantioselectivity for the polymerization of the racemates of L-1 and D-1, respectively. D-1 was polymerized preferentially under dark condition with a D-1/L-1 rate ratio of 70, yielding single right-handed polyisocyanides. Additionally, reversible enantioselectivity was observed under 420 nm light using alkyne-PdII /LR-azo , and the calculated polymerization rate ratio of L-1/D-1 was 57 because of the isomerization of the azobenzene moiety of the catalyst. Furthermore, alkyne-PdII /LS-azo showed opposite enantioselectivity and helix-sense selectivity during the polymerization of the racemates of L-1 and D-1.

The Synergistic Effects between Liquid Crystal and Crystalline Phase on Photo-Responsive Elastomers toward Quick Photo-Responsive Performance

Adopting only a small amount of azobenzene molecular to design liquid crystal photo-responsive materials capable of quick response and flexible adjustability is in high demand but is challenging. Herein, azobenzenemolecules into polyurethane elastomer containing crystalline structure for preparing azobenzene liquid-crystal elastomers (ALCEs) are demonstrated and this phenomenon of the synergistic effects between liquid crystal and crystalline phase is discovered. The key point of the work is that the synthetic ALCEs can utilize the reversible isomerism capability of azobenzene molecules under light irradiation, which can pry the motion of the macromolecular crystalline region in system to realize the large macroscopic deformation of the photo-responsive behavior. Obviously, the ALCEs sample containing azobenzene molecule and polyethylene glycol crystallization can quickly bend, illuminated by ultraviolet light and rapidly straighten under green light. Under the same ultraviolet irradiation, the bending speed, final bending angle, recovery rate and recovery ratio of ALCEs are larger than that of ALCEs without any crystalline structure. This ALCEs based on the synergistic effects between liquid crystal and crystalline phase can break through the current dilemma that the application of traditional azobenzene photo-responsive materials is limited by their concentration, greatly expanding the design thought and their scope of application.

Unexplored Isomerization Pathways of Azobis(benzo-15-crown-5): Computational Studies on a Butterfly Crown Ether

Computational studies on trans → cis and cis → trans isomerizations of photoresponsive azobis(benzo-15-crown-5) have been reported in this work. Kinetics of UV Radiation-Induced Fast Collapse and Recovery in Thermally Cycled and Rehydrated Light- and Thermo- Double-Responsive Copolymer Films Probed by In Situ Neutron Reflectivity

The kinetics of UV radiation-induced fast collapse and recovery in thermally cycled and rehydrated light- and thermo- double-responsive copolymer films of poly(oligo(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate-co-6-(4-phenylazophenoxy)hexyl acrylate), abbreviated as P(OEGMA300-co-PAHA), are probed by in situ neutron reflectivity (NR). The copolymer film is exposed to a thermal treatment starting at a temperature of 60 °C, which is well above its transition temperature (TT = 53 °C) before the temperature is rapidly decreased from 60 to 23 °C. Based on the applied protocol, the initially collapsed P(OEGMA300-co-PAHA) film is rehydrated due to the switching of polymer chains from a more hydrophobic to a more hydrophilic state when the temperature falls below its TT. The whole rehydration process can be divided into 3 stages: D2O absorption, chain rearrangement, and film reswelling. After rehydration, the thermally cycled P(OEGMA300-co-PAHA) film is switched by UV irradiation via setting the UV radiation on and off. Considering the UV-induced collapse and recovery, both processes are slower than those observed in freshly hydrated films without any thermal stimulus history. Therefore, the experienced thermal history of the film should be considered in the design of sensors and detectors based on double-responsive copolymer films.

Photoinduced crystal melting with luminescence evolution based on conformational isomerisation

The phenomenon of crystal melting by light irradiation, known as photo-induced crystal-to-liquid transition (PCLT), can dramatically change material properties with high spatiotemporal resolution. However, the diversity of compounds exhibiting PCLT is severely limited, which hampers further functionalisation of PCLT-active materials and the fundamental understandings of PCLT. Here, we report on heteroaromatic 1,2-diketones as the new class of PCLT-active compounds, whose PCLT is based on conformational isomerisation. In particular, one of the diketones demonstrates luminescence evolution prior to crystal melting. Thus, the diketone crystal exhibits dynamic multistep changes in the luminescence colour and intensity during continuous ultraviolet irradiation. This luminescence evolution can be ascribed to the sequential PCLT processes of crystal loosening and conformational isomerisation before macroscopic melting. Single-crystal X-ray structural analysis, thermal analysis, and theoretical calculations of two PCLT-active and one inactive diketones revealed weaker intermolecular interactions for the PCLT-active crystals. In particular, we observed a characteristic packing motif for the PCLT-active crystals, consisting of an ordered layer of diketone core and a disordered layer of triisopropylsilyl moieties. Our results demonstrate the integration of photofunction with PCLT, provide fundamental insights into the melting process of molecular crystals, and will diversify the molecular design of PCLT-active materials beyond classical photochromic scaffolds such as azobenzenes.

Near-Infrared Emissive Hypervalent Compounds with Germanium(IV)-Fused Azobenzene π-Conjugated Systems

A novel molecular design for showing near-infrared (NIR) emission is still required for satisfying growing demands for NIR-light technology. In this research, hypervalent compounds with germanium (Ge)-fused azobenzene (GAz) scaffolds were discovered that can exhibit NIR emission (λ_PL =690∼721 nm, Φ_PL =0.03∼0.04) despite compact π-conjugated systems. The unique optical properties are derived from the trigonal bipyramidal geometry of the hypervalent compounds constructed by combination of Ge and azobenzene-based tridentate ligands. Experimental and theoretical calculation results disclosed that the germanium-nitrogen (Ge-N) coordination at the equatorial position strongly reduces the energy level of the LUMO (lowest unoccupied molecular orbital), and the three-center four-electron (3 c-4 e) bond in the apical position effectively rises the energy level of the HOMO (highest occupied molecular orbital). It is emphasized that large narrowing of the HOMO-LUMO energy gap is achieved just by forming the hypervalent bond. In addition, the narrow-energy-gap property can be enhanced by extension of π-conjugation. The obtained π-conjugated polymer shows efficient NIR emission both in solution (λ_PL =770 nm and Φ_PL =0.10) and film (λ_PL =807 nm and Φ_PL =0.04). These results suggest that collaboration of a hypervalent bond and a π-conjugated system is a novel and effective strategy for tuning electronic properties even in the NIR region.

Role of Sterically Bulky Azobenzenes in the Molecular Assembly of Pyrene Derivatives: Rectangular Sheet-like Structures and Their Emission Characteristics

The development of pyrene-based fluorescent assembled systems with desirable emission characteristics by reducing conventional concentration quenching and/or aggregation-induced quenching (ACQ) is highly desirable. In this investigation, we designed a new azobenzene-functionalized pyrene derivative (AzPy) in which sterically bulky azobenzene is linked to pyrene. Absorption and fluorescence spectroscopic results before and after molecular assembly indicate that even in a dilute N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) solution (~10 μM), AzPy molecules experienced significant concentration quenching, whereas the emission intensities of AzPy DMF-H₂O turbid suspensions containing self-assembled aggregates were slightly enhanced and showed similar values regardless of the concentration. The shape and size of sheet-like structures, from incomplete flakes less than one micrometer in size to well-completed rectangular microstructures, could be adjusted by changing the concentration. Importantly, such sheet-like structures exhibit concentration dependence of their emission wavelength from blue to yellow-orange. Comparison with the precursor (PyOH) demonstrates that the introduction of a sterically twisted azobenzene moiety plays an important role in converting the spatial molecular arrangements from H- to J-type aggregation mode. Thus, AzPy chromophores grow into anisotropic microstructures through inclined J-type aggregation and high crystallinity, which are responsible for their unexpected emission characteristics. Our findings provide useful insight into the rational design of fluorescent assembled systems.

Hexaphenylbenzene-Based Deep Blue-Emissive Metallacages as Donors for Light-Harvesting Systems

We herein report the preparation of a series of hexaphenylbenzene (HPB)-based deep blue-emissive metallacages via multicomponent coordination-driven self-assembly. These metallacages feature prismatic structures with HPB derivatives as the faces and tetracarboxylic ligands as the pillars, as evidenced by NMR, mass spectrometry and X-ray diffraction analysis. Light-harvesting systems were further constructed by employing the metallacages as the donor and a naphthalimide derivative (NAP) as the acceptor, owing to their good spectral overlap. The judiciously chosen metallacage serves as the antenna, providing the suitable energy to excite the non-emissive NAP, and thus resulting in bright emission for NAP in the solid state. This study provides a type of HPB-based multicomponent emissive metallacage and explores their applications as energy donors to light up non-emissive fluorophores in the solid state, which will advance the development of emissive metallacages as useful luminescent materials.

Light-Responsive Hexagonal Assemblies of Triangular Azo Dyes

The rational design of small building block molecules and understanding their molecular assemblies are of fundamental importance in creating new stimuli-responsive organic architectures with desired shapes and functions. Based on the experimental results of light-induced conformational changes of four types of triangular azo dyes with different terminal functional groups, as well as absorption and fluorescence characteristics associated with their molecular assemblies, we report that aggregation-active emission enhancement (AIEE)-active compound (1) substituted with sterically crowded tert-butyl (t-Bu) groups showed approximately 35% light-induced molecular switching and had a strong tendency to assemble into highly stable hexagonal structures with AIEE characteristics. Their sizes were regulated from nanometer-scale hexagonal rods to micrometer-scale sticks depending on the concentration. This is in contrast to other triangular compounds with bromo (Br) and triphenylamine (TPA) substituents, which exhibited no photoisomerization and tended to form flexible fibrous structures. Moreover, non-contact exposure of the fluorescent hexagonal nanorods to ultraviolet (UV) light led to a dramatic hexagonal-to-amorphous structure transition. The resulting remarkable variations, such as in the contrast of microscopic images and fluorescence characteristics, were confirmed by various microscopic and spectroscopic measurements.

Chiral Luminescent Liquid Crystal with Multi-State-Reversibility: Breakthrough in Advanced Anti-Counterfeiting Materials

Creating a security material that carries distinct information in reflective color, fluorescence, and chiroptical property will enhance anti-counterfeiting levels to deter counterfeits ranging from currencies to pharmaceuticals, but is proven extremely challenging. In this work, an advanced anti-counterfeiting material, with three-state of each mode reversibly converted into multi-mode materials including reflective color, fluorescence, and circularly polarized luminescence signal, is constructed by loading photofluorochromic spiropyran (SP) and zinc ion (Zn2+ ) into the chiral liquid crystal. Under UV irradiation, the complexes of SP and Zn2+ will be transformed into merocyanine (MC) and MC-Zn2+ , while the energy transfer occurs from MC-Zn2+ to MC. Upon heating, MC is easy to recover to SP, while the MC-Zn2+ remains unchanged. The MC and MC-Zn2+ can be transformed into the SP and Zn2+ under visible light irradiation. The three states of each mode can reversibly convert. Furthermore, the reflective color or fluorescence of each state shows different intensities under left- and right-handed circular polarized filters, enabling easy distinguishing by naked eyes. The advanced anti-counterfeiting method with multi-state of each mode for multi-mode encryption information output will provide a new concept for designing and fabricating multi-mode anti-counterfeiting materials, improving the security level for practical application.

Light-controlled shape-changing azomacrocycles exhibiting reversible modulation of pyrene fluorescence emission

We report the design, synthesis, and study of light-induced shape-changing azomacrocycles. These systems have been incorporated with azobenzene photoswitches using alkoxy tethers and triazole units to afford flexibility and binding. We envision that such azomacrocycles are capable of reversibly binding with the guest molecule. Remarkably, we have demonstrated fully light-controlled fluorescence quenching and enhancement in the monomeric emission of pyrene (guest). Such modulations have been achieved by the photoisomerization of the azomacrocycle and, in turn, host-guest interactions. Also, the azomacrocycles tend to aggregate and can also be controlled by light or heat. We uncovered such phenomena using spectroscopic, microscopic, and isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) studies and computations.

Solvent- and Light-Sensitive AIEE-Active Azo Dye: From Spherical to 1D and 2D Assemblies

Fluorescent molecular assembly systems provide an exciting platform for creating stimuli-responsive nano- and microstructured materials with optical, electronic, and sensing functions. To understand the relationship between (i) the plausible molecular structures preferentially adopted depending on the solvent polarity (such as N,N-dimethylformamide [DMF], tetrahydrofuran [THF], and toluene), (ii) the resulting spectroscopic features, and (iii) self-assembled nano-, micro-, and macrostructures, we chose a sterically crowded triangular azo dye (3Bu) composed of a polar molecular core and three peripheral biphenyl wings. The chromophore changed the solution color from yellow to pink-red depending on the solvent polarity. In a yellow DMF solution, a considerable amount of the twisted azo form could be kept stable with the help of favorable intermolecular interactions with the solvent molecules. By varying the concentration of the DMF solution, the morphology of self-assembled structures was transformed from nanoparticles to micrometer-sized one-dimensional (1D) structures such as sticks and fibers. In a pink-red toluene solution, the periphery of the central ring became more planar. The resulting significant amount of the keto-hydrazone tautomer grew into micro- and millimeter-sized 1D structures. Interestingly, when THF-H₂O (1:1) mixtures were stored at a low temperature, elongated fibers were stacked sideways and eventually developed into anisotropic two-dimensional (2D) sheets. Notably, subsequent exposure of visible-light-irradiated sphere samples to solvent vapor resulted in reversible fluorescence off↔on switching accompanied by morphological restoration. These findings suggest that rational selection of organic dyes, solvents, and light is important for developing reusable fluorescent materials.

Aggregation-Induced Emission Luminogens with Photoresponsive Behaviors for Biomedical Applications

Fluorescent biomedical materials can visualize subcellular structures and therapy processes in vivo. The aggregation-induced emission (AIE) phenomenon helps suppress the quenching effect in the aggregated state suffered by conventional fluorescent materials, thereby contributing to design strategies for fluorescent biomedical materials. Photoresponsive biomedical materials have attracted attention because of the inherent advantages of light; i.e., remote control, high spatial and temporal resolution, and environmentally friendly characteristics, and their combination with AIE facilitates development of fluorescent molecules with efficient photochemical reactions upon light irradiation. In this review, organic compounds with AIE features for biomedical applications and design strategies for photoresponsive AIE luminogens (AIEgens) are first summarized briefly. Applications are then reviewed, with the employment of photoresponsive and AIE-active molecules for photoactivation imaging, super-resolution imaging, light-induced drug delivery, photodynamic therapy with photochromic behavior, and bacterial targeting and killing being discussed at length. Finally, the future outlook for AIEgens is considered with the aim of stimulating innovative work for further development of this field.

Photoregulated Morphological Transformation of Spiropyran Derivatives Achieving the Tunability of Interfacial Hydrophilicity

Regulation of self-assembly morphology is an effective strategy to obtain advanced functional materials with expected properties. However, achieving remarkable morphological transformation by light irradiation is still a challenge. Herein, three simple spiropyran derivatives (SP1, SP2, and SP3) are constructed, achieving different degrees of morphological transformation from nanospheres to hollow tadpole-like structures (SP3), tubular structures (SP2), and microsheets (SP1) after ultraviolet light irradiation. Interestingly, the hollow tadpole-like structures (SP3) can further extend to Y-shaped or T-shaped tubular morphology. In the process, SP1, SP2, and SP3 can be isomerized from a closed-ring form (hydrophobicity) to an open-ring form (hydrophilicity) in different degrees, interacting differently with methanol solvent molecules. The formation of hollow structures or microsheets along with the isomerization of spiropyran derivatives contributes to the adjustment of the hydrophilicity of the interface. Therefore, SP1, SP2, and SP3 with photoregulated morphological transformation show promising applications in tunable interface materials.

Stimuli-Responsive AIEgens

The unique advantages and the exciting application prospects of AIEgens have triggered booming developments in this area in recent years. Among them, stimuli-responsive AIEgens have received particular attention and impressive progress, and they have been demonstrated to show tremendous potential in many fields from physical chemistry to materials science and to biology and medicine. Here, the recent achievements of stimuli-responsive AIEgens in terms of seven most representative types of stimuli including force, light, polarity, temperature, electricity, ion, and pH, are summarized. Based on typical examples, it is illustrated how each type of systems realize the desired stimuli-responsive performance for various applications. The key work principles behind them are ultimately deciphered and figured out to offer new insights and guidelines for the design and engineering of the next-generation stimuli-responsive luminescent materials for more broad applications.

Fluorescent Azobenzene-Containing Compounds: From Structure to Mechanism

The reversible photoisomerization of azobenzenes has been extensively studied to construct systems with optical responsiveness; however, this process limits the luminescence of these compounds. Recently, there have been many efforts to design and synthesize fluorescent azobenzene compounds, such as inhibition of electron transfer, inducing aggregation, and metal-enhancement, which make the materials ideal for application in fluorescence probes, light-emitting devices, molecular detection, etc. Herein, we review the recently reported progress in the development of various fluorescent azobenzenes and summarize the possible mechanism of their fluorescence emission. The potential applications of these materials are also discussed. Finally, in order to guide research in this field, the existing problems and future development prospects are discussed.

A Highly Ordered Quantum Dot Supramolecular Assembly Exhibiting Photoinduced Emission Enhancement

Multicomponent supramolecular assembly systems enable the generation of materials with outstanding properties, not obtained from single-component systems, via a synergetic effect. Herein, we demonstrate a novel supramolecular coassembly system rendering highly ordered quantum dot (QD) arrangement structures formed via the self-assembly of azobenzene derivatives, where the photocontrollable photoluminescence (PL) properties of the QDs are realized based on photoisomerization. Upon mixing the assembled azobenzene derivatives and QDs in apolar media, a time-evolution coaggregation into hierarchical nanosheets with a highly ordered QD arrangement structure occurs. Upon photoirradiation, the nanosheets transform into ill-defined aggregates without arranged QDs together with enhancing the PL intensity. In days, the photoirradiated coaggregates undergo recovery of the PL properties corresponding to the arranged QDs through thermal isomerization.

Tuning of Bistability, Thermal Stability of the Metastable States, and Application Prospects in the C3 -Symmetric Designs of Multiple Azo(hetero)arenes Systems

Light-responsive molecular systems with multiple photoswitches in C₃ -symmetric designs have enormous application potential. The design part of such molecular systems is critical due to its influence in several properties associated with the photoswitches. In order to tune, and in the evaluation of the design-property relationship, we synthesized 18 tripodal systems with variations in the core, linkers, connectivity, and azo(hetero)arene photoswitches. Through extensive spectroscopic and computational studies, we envisaged the factors controlling near-quantitative photoisomerization in both the directions (bistability) and the thermal stability of the metastable states. Furthermore, we also evaluated the impact of designs in obtaining reversible photo-responsive sol-gel phase transitions, solvatochromism, photo- and thermochromism.

Discovery of Functional Luminescence Properties Based on Flexible and Bendable Boron-Fused Azomethine/Azobenzene Complexes with O,N,O-Type Tridentate Ligands

Azomethine (C=N) and azo (N=N) scaffolds are a part of structural units in poly(p-phenylene azomethine) (PAM) and poly(p-phenylene azo) (PAZ), respectively. Poly(p-phenylene vinylene) (PPV) is known to be one of luminescent π-conjugated polymers, meanwhile PAM and PAZ, which are the aza-substituted PPV analogues, are regarded as weak or no emissive materials. However, by the boron complexation, intense emission can be induced. Furthermore, environment-sensitivity and stimuli-responsivity were also observed. In this review, we demonstrate unique and versatile luminescent properties based on "flexible and bendable" π-conjugated systems composed of the boron-fused azomethine and azobenzene complexes (BAm and BAz) with the O,N,O-type tridentate ligands. The "flexible and bendable" luminophores showed intriguing optical behaviors, such as thermosalient effect, aggregation-induced emission (AIE) and crystallized-induced emission (CIE). Moreover, highly efficient emissions both in solution and film states were observed from the polymers. We illustrate the results and mechanisms on these luminescent properties from the series of our recent studies with BAm and BAz complexes and polymers.

Benzosiloles with Crystallization-Induced Emission Enhancement of Electrochemiluminescence: Synthesis, Electrochemistry, and Crystallography

Crystallization-induced emission enhancement (CIEE) was demonstrated for the first time for electrochemilunimescence (ECL) with two new benzosiloles. Compared with their solution, the films of the two benzosiloles gave CIEE of 24 and 16 times. The mechanism of the CIEE-ECL was examined by spooling ECL spectroscopy, X-ray crystal structure analysis, photoluminescence, and DFT calculations. This CIEE-ECL system is a complement to the well-established aggregation-induced emission enhancement (AIEE) systems. Unique intermolecular interactions are noted in the crystalline chromophore. The first heterogeneous ECL system is established for organic compounds with highly hydrophobic properties.

Self-assembly and fluorescence emission of UV-responsive azobenzene-containing helical poly(phenyl isocyanide) copolymers
