Surface Capping Agents and Their Roles in Shape‐Controlled Synthesis of Colloidal Metal Nanocrystals

Nanocrystal Assemblies: Current Advances and Open Problems

We explore the potential of nanocrystals (a term used equivalently to nanoparticles) as building blocks for nanomaterials, and the current advances and open challenges for fundamental science developments and applications. Nanocrystal assemblies are inherently multiscale, and the generation of revolutionary material properties requires a precise understanding of the relationship between structure and function, the former being determined by classical effects and the latter often by quantum effects. With an emphasis on theory and computation, we discuss challenges that hamper current assembly strategies and to what extent nanocrystal assemblies represent thermodynamic equilibrium or kinetically trapped metastable states. We also examine dynamic effects and optimization of assembly protocols. Finally, we discuss promising material functions and examples of their realization with nanocrystal assemblies.

Role of polyvinylpyrrolidone in the polyol synthesis of platinum nanoparticles

In this work, platinum (Pt) nanoparticles (NPs) were prepared via the reduction of Pt salts in an ethylene glycol induced polyol process with an altered polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)/Pt molar ratio. With the systematic elucidation of the hydrodynamic size in a liquid; the solid-state size and morphology, crystal structure, surface chemical state and thermal decomposition behavior of the synthesized Pt NPs; as well as the reducing dynamic of Pt cations, the role of PVP in the polyol synthesis of Pt NPs is clarified for the first time. It was found that the amount of PVP does not affect the reducing dynamic of Pt cations, but the chemical state of PVP capped on Pt NPs and the resultant particle size significantly depend on the initial PVP/Pt molar ratio in the precursor solution. Dense-packed PVP via the chemisorption of carbonyl oxygen on the surface of Pt NPs occurs in the case of a higher PVP/Pt ratio, suppressing particle growth and resulting in smaller Pt NPs. On the contrary, the chemical structure of PVP is tuned by the cleavage of the N-C bond and results in the chemisorption of the N atom on the surface of Pt NPs, which promotes the production of larger Pt NPs when a lower PVP/Pt ratio is applied.

Mesomorphology of clathrate hydrates from molecular ordering

Clathrate hydrates are crystals formed by guest molecules that stabilize cages of hydrogen-bonded water molecules. Whereas thermodynamic equilibrium is well described via the van der Waals and Platteeuw approach, the increasing concerns with global warming and energy transition require extending the knowledge to non-equilibrium conditions in multiphase, sheared systems, in a multiscale framework. Potential macro-applications concern the storage of carbon dioxide in the form of clathrates, and the reduction of hydrate inhibition additives currently required in hydrocarbon production. We evidence porous mesomorphologies as key to bridging the molecular scales to macro-applications of low solubility guests. We discuss the coupling of molecular ordering with the mesoscales, including (i) the emergence of porous patterns as a combined factor from the walk over the free energy landscape and 3D competitive nucleation and growth and (ii) the role of molecular attachment rates in crystallization-diffusion models that allow predicting the timescale of pore sealing. This is a perspective study that discusses the use of discrete models (molecular dynamics) to build continuum models (phase field models, crystallization laws, and transport phenomena) to predict multiscale manifestations at a feasible computational cost. Several advances in correlated fields (ice, polymers, alloys, and nanoparticles) are discussed in the scenario of clathrate hydrates, as well as the challenges and necessary developments to push the field forward.

Bridging colloidal and electrochemical syntheses of metal nanocrystals with seeded electrodeposition for tracking single nanocrystal growth

Metal nanocrystals (NCs) produced by colloidal synthesis have a variety of structural features, such as different planes, edges, and defects. Even from the best colloidal syntheses, these characteristics are distributed differently in each NC. This inherent heterogeneity can play a significant role in the properties displayed by NCs. This manuscript reports the use of electrochemistry to synthesize Au NCs in a system evaluated to track individual NC growth trajectories as a first step toward rapid identification of NCs with different structural features. Au nanocubes were prepared colloidally and deposited onto a glassy carbon electrode using either electrospray or an airbrush, resulting in well-spaced Au nanocubes. The Au nanocubes then served as seeds as gold salt was reduced to deposit metal at constant potential. Deposition at constant potential facilitates overgrowth on the Au nanocubes to achieve new NC shapes. The effects of applied potential, deposition time, precursor concentration, and capping agents on NC shape evolution were studied. The outcomes are correlated to results from traditional colloidal syntheses, providing a bridge between the two synthetic strategies. Moreover, scanning electron microscopy was used to image the same NCs before and after deposition, linking individual seed features to differences in deposition. This ability is anticipated to enable tracking of individual growth trajectories of NCs to elucidate sources of heterogeneity in NC syntheses.

Formation mechanisms and environmental influences on the crystal growth of wulfenite

In this study, we introduce a novel approach using correlative analysis techniques to unravel detailed insights into the environmental influences on crystal growth. Tabular and bipyramidal wulfenite samples from the Mežica mine in north-eastern Slovenia were analysed to combine the morphological aspects of crystal growth with the atomic-resolution reconstruction of the positions of lead (Pb) and molybdenum (Mo) atoms in the parent crystal lattice. These combined data also allow us to present the formation mechanism that enables the development of bipyramidal or tabular morphologies in wulfenite. The bipyramidal and tabular crystals are chemically pure wulfenite (PbMoO4), as confirmed by various advanced diffraction and spectroscopy techniques. However, each habit includes multiple inclusions, mostly consisting of carbonates, Pb-Fe oxides, Pb oxides and, more rarely, Pb vanadate (descloizite). The differences in the morphologies can be attributed to compositional changes during precipitation from a meteoric solution and thus, we propose a growth mechanism consisting of three different phases of growth. This innovative approach emphasises the importance of understanding the origin of crystal habits, as can help to decipher how external influences can affect the crystal structure and its surface, leading to the dissolution of preferred surfaces and the selective release of Pb and Mo.

Mechanochemical hydroquinone regeneration promotes gold salt reduction in sub-stoichiometric conditions of the reducing agent

Bottom-up mechanochemical synthesis (BUMS) has been demonstrated to be an efficient approach for the preparation of metal nanoparticles (NPs), protected by surface agents or anchored on solid supports. However, there are limitations, such as precise size and morphological control, due to a lack of knowledge about the mechanically induced processes of NP formation under milling. In this article, we further investigate the BUMS of AuNPs. Using SiO2 as a solid support, we studied the effect of typical reducing agents, namely NaBH4, L-ascorbic acid, and hydroquinone (HQ), on the conversion of a AuIII source. XANES showed that HQ is the strongest reducing agent under our experimental conditions, leading to the quantitative conversion of gold salt in a few minutes. Interestingly, even when HQ was used in sub-stoichiometric amounts, AuIII could be reduced to ratios higher than 85% after two minutes of milling. Investigations into the byproducts by 1H NMR and GC-FID/MS enabled the identification HQ regeneration and the formation of its derivatives. We mainly focused on benzoquinone (BQ), which is the product of the oxidation of HQ as it reduces the gold salt. We could demonstrate that HQ is regenerated from BQ exclusively under milling and acidic conditions. The regenerated HQ and other HQ-chlorinated molecules could then reduce gold-oxidized species, leading to higher conversions and economy of reactants. Our study highlights the intriguing and complex mechanisms of mechanochemical systems, in addition to fostering the atom and energy economy side of mechanochemical means to produce metal nanoparticles.

Putting Hybrid Nanomaterials to Work for Biomedical Applications

Hybrid nanomaterials have found use in many biomedical applications. This article provides a comprehensive review of the principles, techniques, and recent advancements in the design and fabrication of hybrid nanomaterials for biomedicine. We begin with an introduction to the general concept of material hybridization, followed by a discussion of how this approach leads to materials with additional functionality and enhanced performance. We then highlight hybrid nanomaterials in the forms of nanostructures, nanocomposites, metal-organic frameworks, and biohybrids, including their fabrication methods. We also showcase the use of hybrid nanomaterials to advance biomedical engineering in the context of nanomedicine, regenerative medicine, diagnostics, theranostics, and biomanufacturing. Finally, we offer perspectives on challenges and opportunities.

Tuning the Geometry and Optical Chirality of Pentatwinned Au Nanoparticles with 5-Fold Rotational Symmetry

Chirality transfer from chiral molecules to chiral nanomaterials represents an important topic for exploring the origin of chirality in many natural and artificial systems. Moreover, developing a promising class of chiral nanomaterials holds great significance for various applications, including sensing, photonics, catalysis, and biomedicine. Here we demonstrate the geometric control and tunable optical chirality of chiral pentatwinned Au nanoparticles with 5-fold rotational symmetry using the seed-mediated chiral growth method. A distinctive growth pathway and optical chirality are observed using pentatwinned decahedra as seeds, in comparison with the single-crystal Au seeds. By employing different peptides as chiral inducers, pentatwinned Au nanoparticles with two distinct geometric chirality (pentagonal nanostars and pentagonal prisms) are obtained. The intriguing formation and evolution of geometric chirality with the twinned structure are analyzed from a crystallographic perspective upon maneuvering the interplay of chiral molecules, surfactants, and reducing agents. Moreover, the interesting effects of the molecular structure of peptides on tuning the geometric chirality of pentatwinned Au nanoparticles are also explored. Finally, we theoretically and experimentally investigate the far-field and near-field optical properties of chiral pentatwinned Au nanoparticles through numerical simulations and single-particle chiroptical measurements. The ability to tune the geometric chirality in a controlled manner represents an important step toward the development of chiral nanomaterials with increasing architectural complexity for chiroptical applications.

Unexpected Emergence of Carbon-Centered Radicals from Piezoelectric Effect in Oleic Acid-Capped BaTiO3

The utilization of alkyl radicals (•R) for hypoxic tumor therapy has great prospects due to its O2-independence and high reactivity. However, correlational initiators for in vivo activation remain scarce. Here, we report that ultrasound excitation of oleic acid-capped BaTiO3 (OA@BaTiO3) can result in an •R cascade and hence a means to conquer hypoxic tumors. Mechanistic studies find that the •R signal disappears when OA@BaTiO3 undergoes acid washing post-treatment, which is a common procedure for removing the unwanted byproduct BaCO3. Combined with the infrared spectrum analysis, acid treatment was proven to weaken the peaks at 2840-2970 cm-1 characteristic of -CH2- and terminal -CH3 stretching vibration of OA. There is compelling evidence that high temperature thermal oxidation of OA involves the generation of •R. Thus, acid washing is considered to remove the loosely bound yet catalytically active OA. And piezoelectric BaTiO3, a potential electron-hole redox catalyst, can sensitize these OA molecules and disintegrate them to •R. This unexpected discovery provides us with a distinctive mentality to seek diverse •R initiators for tumor ablation, as well as an additional perspective on the postprocessing of synthetic materials.

The role of pH-induced tautomerism of polyvinylpyrrolidone on the size, stability, and antioxidant and antibacterial activities of silver nanoparticles synthesized using microwave radiation

Tautomerism alters the structure and properties of materials, which can be exploited to control their chemical and biological activities. The role of pH-induced tautomerism of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) was determined by measuring the size, stability, and antioxidant and antibacterial properties of microwave synthesized-silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). TEM and XRD analyses confirmed the formation of face-centered cubic silver nanoparticles. PVP stabilized the AgNPs by interaction with the carbonyl or hydroxyl groups depending on the tautomerization under different pH conditions. At pH 4, PVP was stable in the keto tautomer, stabilizing Ag through electron donation of oxygen atoms in the carbonyl group, producing smaller AgNPs with a higher zeta potential. At pH 7 and 9, the enol tautomer PVP stabilized the AgNPs via oxygen atoms in the hydroxyl group, forming large nanoparticles. The keto form of PVP improved the stability and antioxidant and antibacterial properties of AgNPs compared with the enol form. This study also excluded the antioxidant contribution of PVP via hydrogen donation to free radicals. A facile method for controlling the size of AgNPs by adapting the pH-induced tautomerism of PVP that affects their stability and antioxidant and antibacterial activities is thus reported.

A universal strategy for green and surfactant-free synthesis of noble metal nanoparticles

We propose a universal, green, and surfactant-free strategy to synthesize noble metal particles with high monodispersity using gaseous H2 as a reducing agent in a solution at 60 °C. The prepared Pt nanoparticles have a 24 mV more positive half-wave potential than the commercially available Pt/C in the oxygen reduction reaction, while showing high durability with negligible half-wave potential decay after 10 000 cycles of testing.

Understanding and controlling the nucleation and growth of metal-organic frameworks

Metal-organic frameworks offer a diverse landscape of building blocks to design high performance materials for implications in almost every major industry. With this diversity stems complex crystallization mechanisms with various pathways and intermediates. Crystallization studies have been key to the advancement of countless biological and synthetic systems, with MOFs being no exception. This review provides an overview of the current theories and fundamental chemistry used to decipher MOF crystallization. We then discuss how intrinsic and extrinsic synthetic parameters can be used as tools to modulate the crystallization pathway to produce MOF crystals with finely tuned physical and chemical properties. Experimental and computational methods are provided to guide the probing of MOF crystal formation on the molecular and bulk scale. Lastly, we summarize the recent major advances in the field and our outlook on the exciting future of MOF crystallization.

Minimum Free-Energy Shapes of Ag Nanocrystals: Vacuum vs Solution

We use two variants of replica-exchange molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, parallel tempering MD and partial replica exchange MD, to probe the minimum free-energy shapes of Ag nanocrystals containing 100-200 atoms in a vacuum, ethylene glycol (EG) solvent, and EG solvent with a PVP polymer containing 100 repeat units. Our simulations reveal a shape intermediate between a Dh and an Ih, a Dh-Ih, that has distinct structural signatures and magic sizes. We find several prominent features associated with entropy: pure FCC nanocrystals are less common than FCC crystals containing stacking faults, and crystals with the minimum potential energy are not always preferred over the range of relevant temperatures. The shapes of the nanocrystals in solution are influenced by the chemical identities of the solution-phase molecules. Comparing Ag nanocrystal shapes in EG to those in an EG+PVP solution, we find more icosahedra in EG and more decahedra in EG+PVP across all of the nanocrystal sizes probed in this study. At certain critical sizes, nanocrystal shapes can change dramatically with the addition and removal of a single atom or with a change in temperature at a fixed size. The information in our study could be useful in efforts to devise processing routes to achieve selective nanocrystal shapes.

Mapping the Identity of Transition Metal Doping and Surface Passivation in Indium Phosphide with Theoretical Calculation

Understanding the electronic structure of doped InP quantum dots (QDs) is essential to optimize the material for specific optoelectronic applications. However, current synthesis approaches are often tedious and unfavorable for rational tunning. Herein, a combination of experimental and computational studies was conducted to address the doping mechanism and surface passivation of InP QDs. The successful dopant introduction requires low Cu doping concentration and heavy Mn doping, while the Ag doping amount is relatively moderate. This may correspond to the theoretical doping formation energy presented as Cu (-2.52 eV) < Ag (-1.76 eV) < Mn (-0.38 eV). As for surface passivation, inorganic ions and shell-like ZnS are unraveled through simulational investigation. Chloride ion promotes oriented growth toward tetrahedron morphology while nitrate-passivated InP QDs exhibit blurry transmission electron microscope (TEM) morphology. Correspondingly, the binding energy of chloride ion with (111) facet is -2.13 eV significantly lower than those of (110) and (100) facets. Further, the additional Zn 3d bands are more involved in the formation of conduction band, which optimized the Mn-doped InP with a 0.32 eV bandgap. These experimental and model results provide more microscopic details of doped InP, which can motivate theoretically exact control of guest ion stoichiometry with optimized characteristics for electrical devices.

Synthesis of Zwitterionic CsPbBr3 Nanocrystals with Controlled Anisotropy using Surface-Selective Ligand Pairs

Mechanistic studies of the morphology of lead halide perovskite nanocrystals (LHP-NCs) are hampered by a lack of generalizable suitable synthetic strategies and ligand systems. Here, the synthesis of zwitterionic CsPbBr3 NCs is presented with controlled anisotropy using a proposed "surface-selective ligand pairs" strategy. Such a strategy provides a platform to systematically study the binding affinity of capping ligand pairs and the resulting LHP morphologies. By using zwitterionic ligands (ZwL) with varying structures, majority ZwL-capped LHP NCs with controlled morphology are obtained, including anisotropic nanoplatelets and nanorods, for the first time. Combining experiments with density functional theory calculations, factors that govern the ligand binding on the different surface facets of LHP-NCs are revealed, including the steric bulkiness of the ligand, the number of binding sites, and the charge distance between binding moieties. This study provides guidance for the further exploration of anisotropic LHP-NCs.

Early-stage bifurcation of crystallization in a sphere

Bifurcations in kinetic pathways decide the evolution of a system. An example is crystallization, in which the thermodynamically stable polymorph may not form due to kinetic hindrance. Here, we use confined self-assembly to investigate the interplay of thermodynamics and kinetics in the crystallization pathways of finite clusters. We report the observation of decahedral clusters from colloidal particles in emulsion droplets and show that these decahedral clusters can be thermodynamically stable, just like icosahedral clusters. Our hard sphere simulations reveal how the development of the early nucleus shape passes through a bifurcation that decides the cluster symmetry. A geometric argument explains why decahedral clusters are kinetically hindered and why icosahedral clusters can be dominant even if they are not in the thermodynamic ground state.

Deterministic Synthesis of Pd Nanocrystals Enclosed by High-Index Facets and Their Enhanced Activity toward Formic Acid Oxidation

Noble-metal nanocrystals enclosed by high-index facets are of growing interest due to their enhanced catalytic performance in a variety of reactions. Herein, we report the deterministic synthesis of Pd nanocrystals encased by high-index facets by controlling the rate of deposition (Vdeposition) relative to that of surface diffusion (Vdiffusion). For octahedral seeds with truncated corners, a reduction rate (and thus deposition rate) faster than that of surface diffusion (i.e., Vdeposition/Vdiffusion > 1) led to the formation of concave trisoctahedra (TOH) with high-index facets. When the reduction was slowed down, in contrast, surface diffusion dominated the growth pathway. In the case of Vdeposition/Vdiffusion ≈ 1, truncated octahedra with enlarged sizes were produced. When the reduction rate was between these two extremes, we obtained concave tetrahexahedra (THH) without or with truncation. Similar growth patterns were also observed for the cuboctahedral seeds. When the Pd octahedra, concave TOH, and concave THH were tested for electrocatalyzing the formic acid oxidation (FAO) reaction, those with high-index facets were advantageous over the conventional Pd octahedra enclosed by {111} facets. This work not only contributes to the understanding of surface diffusion and its role in nanocrystal growth but also offers a general protocol for the synthesis of nanocrystals enclosed by high-index facets.

Shape Transformation via Etching and Regrowth: A Systematic Study of Pd Nanocrystals with Different Shapes and Twin Structures

This article describes a systematic study of the oxidative etching and regrowth behaviors of Pd nanocrystals, including single-crystal cubes bounded by {100} facets, single-crystal octahedra and tetrahedra enclosed by {111} facets; and multiple-twinned icosahedra covered by {111} facets and twin boundaries. During etching, Pd atoms are preferentially oxidized and removed from the corners regardless of the type of nanocrystal, and the resultant Pd2+ ions are then reduced back to elemental Pd. For cubes and icosahedra, the newly formed Pd atoms are deposited on the {100} facets and twin boundaries, respectively, due to their relatively higher energies. For octahedra and tetrahedra, the Pd atoms self-nucleate in the solution phase, followed by their growth into small particles. We can control the regrowth rate relative to etching rate by varying the concentration of HCl in the reaction solution. As the concentration of HCl is increased, 18-nm Pd cubes are transformed into octahedra of 23, 18, and 13 nm, respectively, in edge length. Due to the absence of regrowth, however, Pd octahedra are transformed into truncated octahedra, cuboctahedra, and spheres with decreasing sizes whereas Pd tetrahedra evolve into truncated tetrahedra and spheres. In contrast, Pd icosahedra with twin boundaries on the surface are converted to asymmetric icosahedra, flower-like icosahedra, and spheres. This work not only advances the understanding of etching and growth behaviors of metal nanocrystals with various shapes and twin structures but also offers an alternative method for controlling their shape and size.

Control over product formation and thermodynamic stability of thiolate-protected gold nanoclusters through tuning of surface protecting ligands

Surface-protecting ligands can regulate the structure of a cluster's core either through electronic or steric effects. However, the influence of the steric effect along with the electronic effect over controlling the structure during ligand exchange reactions remains elusive. To understand this, we have carried out ligand exchange on [Au23(CHT)16]- (CHT: cyclohexane thiol) using aromatic thiolates where we have tuned the bulkiness at the para position of the thiolate group on the incoming ligands. The outcome of the experiments reveals that each of the ligands in the chosen series is precisely selective towards the parent cluster transformation through specific intermediates. The ligand with more steric crowding directed the reaction pathway to have Au28 nanocluster as the major product while Au36 was the final product obtained with the gradual decrease of bulkiness over the ligand. The combined experimental and theoretical results elucidated the mechanism of the reaction pathways, product formation, and their stability. Indeed, this study with the series of ligands will add up to the ligand library, where we can decide on the ligand to obtain our desired cluster for specific applications through the ligand exchange reaction.

A Surfactant-Free and General Strategy for the Synthesis of Bimetallic Core-Shell Nanocrystals on Reduced Graphene Oxide through Targeted Photodeposition

Tunable physicochemical properties of bimetallic core-shell heterostructured nanocrystals (HNCs) have shown enormous potential in electrocatalytic reactions. In many cases, HNCs are required to load on supports to inhibit catalyst aggregation. However, the introduction of supports during the process of growing core-shell HNCs makes the synthesis much more complicated and difficult to control precisely. Herein, we reported a universal photochemical synthetic strategy for the controlled synthesis of well-defined surfactant-free core-shell metal HNCs on a reduced graphene oxide (rGO) support, which was assisted by the fine control of photogenerated electrons directly transferring to the targeted metal seeds via rGO and the precisely tuned adsorption capacity of the added second metal precursors. The surface photovoltage microscopy (SPVM) platform proved that photogenerated electrons flowed through rGO to Pd particles under illumination. We have successfully synthesized 24 different core-shell metal HNCs, i.,e., M_A@M_B (M_A = Pd, Au, and Pt; M_B = Au, Ag, Pt, Pd, Ir, Ru, Rh, Ni and Cu), on the rGO supports. The as-prepared Pd@Cu core-shell HNCs showed outstanding performance in the electrocatalytic reduction of CO₂ to CH₄. This work could shed light on the controlled synthesis of more functional bimetallic nanostructured materials on diverse supports for various applications.

Elucidating the Role of Capping Agents in Facet-Dependent Adsorption Performance of Hematite Nanostructures

Organic capping agents are a ubiquitous and crucial part of preparing reproducible and homogeneous batches of nanomaterials, particularly nanocrystals with well-defined facets. Despite studies reporting surface ligands (e.g., capping agents) having a non-negligible role in catalytic behavior, their impact is less understood in contaminant adsorption, an important consideration given their potential to obfuscate facet-dependent trends in performance. To ascribe observed behaviors to the facet or the ligand, this report evaluates the impact of poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) (PVP), a commonly utilized capping agent, on the adsorption performance of nanohematite particles of varying prevailing facet in the removal of selenite (Se(IV)) as a model system. The PVP capping agent reduces the available surface area for contaminant binding, thus resulting in a reduction in overall Se(IV) adsorbed. However, accounting for the effects of surface area, {012}-faceted nanohematite demonstrates a significantly higher sorption capacity for Se(IV) compared with that of {001}-faceted nanohematite. Notably, chemical treatment is minimally effective in removing strongly bound PVP, indicating that complete removal of surface ligands remains challenging.

Nanoimaging of Facet-Dependent Adsorption, Diffusion, and Reactivity of Surface Ligands on Au Nanocrystals

Analysis of the influence of dissimilar facets on the adsorption, stability, mobility, and reactivity of surface ligands is essential for designing ligand-coated nanocrystals with optimal functionality. Herein, para-nitrothiophenol and nitronaphthalene were chemisorbed and physisorbed, respectively, on Au nanocrystals, and the influence of different facets within a single Au nanocrystal on ligands properties were identified by IR nanospectroscopy measurements. Preferred adsorption was probed on (001) facets for both ligands, with a lower density on (111) facets. Exposure to reducing conditions led to nitro reduction and diffusion of both ligands toward the top (111) facet. Nitrothiophenol was characterized with a diffusivity higher than that of nitronaphthalene. Moreover, the strong thiol-Au interaction led to the diffusion of Au atoms and the formation of thiol-coated Au nanoparticles on the silicon surface. It is identified that the adsorption and reactivity of surface ligands were mainly influenced by the atomic properties of each facet, while diffusion was controlled by ligand-metal interactions.

Metal-Ligand Interactions and Their Roles in Controlling Nanoparticle Formation and Functions

ConspectusFunctional nanoparticles (NPs) have been studied extensively in the past decades for their unique nanoscale properties and their promising applications in advanced nanosciences and nanotechnologies. One critical component of studying these NPs is to prepare monodisperse NPs so that their physical and chemical properties can be tuned and optimized. Solution phase reactions have provided the most reliable processes for fabricating such monodisperse NPs in which metal-ligand interactions play essential roles in the synthetic controls. These interactions are also key to stabilizing the preformed NPs for them to show the desired electronic, magnetic, photonic, and catalytic properties. In this Account, we summarize some representative organic bipolar ligands that have recently been explored to control NP formation and NP functions. These include aliphatic acids, alkylphosphonic acids, alkylamines, alkylphosphines, and alkylthiols. This ligand group covers metal-ligand interactions via covalent, coordination, and electrostatic bonds that are most commonly employed to control NP sizes, compositions, shapes, and properties. The metal-ligand bonding effects on NP nucleation rate and growth can now be more thoroughly investigated by in situ spectroscopic and theoretical studies. In general, to obtain the desired NP size and monodispersity requires rational control of the metal/ligand ratios, concentrations, and reaction temperatures in the synthetic solutions. In addition, for multicomponent NPs, the binding strength of ligands to various metal surfaces needs to be considered in order to prepare these NPs with predesigned compositions. The selective ligand binding onto certain facets of NPs is also key to anisotropic growth of NPs, as demonstrated in the synthesis of one-dimensional nanorods and nanowires. The effects of metal-ligand interactions on NP functions are discussed in two aspects, electrochemical catalysis for CO₂ reduction and electronic transport across NP assemblies. We first highlight recent advances in using surface ligands to promote the electrochemical reduction of CO₂. Several mechanisms are discussed, including the modification of the catalyst surface environment, electron transfer through the metal-organic interface, and stabilization of the CO₂ reduction intermediates, all of which facilitate selective CO₂ reduction. These strategies lead to better understanding of molecular level control of catalysis for further catalyst optimization. Metal-ligand interaction in magnetic NPs can also be used to control tunneling magnetoresistance properties across NPs in NP assemblies by tuning NP interparticle spacing and surface spin polarization. In all, metal-ligand interactions have yielded particularly promising directions for tuning CO₂ reduction selectivity and for optimizing nanoelectronics, and the concepts can certainly be extended to rationalize NP engineering at atomic/molecular precision for the fabrication of sensitive functional devices that will be critical for many nanotechnological applications.

Manipulating morphology and composition in colloidal heterometallic nanopods and nanodendrites

Branched Pt nanoparticles represent an exciting class of nanomaterials with high surface areas suitable for applications in electrocatalysis. Introducing a second metal can enhance performance and reduce cost. External factors such as capping agents and temperature have been used to offer insights into nanopod formation and to encourage their kinetic evolution. More recently, nanodendrites have been reported, though synthesis has generally been empirical; making controlled variation of morphology while maintaining bimetallic composition an elusive target. We report the combination of Pt with Fe under a range of conditions, yielding individually bimetallic nanoparticles whose construction sheds new light on nanopod and/or nanodendrite formation. Fine control of metal precursor reduction through modulating capping agents, reagents, and temperature initially directs nanopod synthesis. Morphology control is retained while composition is then varied from Pt-rich to Pt-poor. Additionally, conditions are identified that promote the collision-based branching of nanopod arms. This allows synthesis to be redirected for the selective growth of compositionally controlled nanodendrites in predictable fashion.

Quantification, Exchange, and Removal of Surface Ligands on Noble-Metal Nanocrystals

ConspectusSurface ligands are vital to the colloidal synthesis of noble-metal nanocrystals with well-controlled sizes and shapes for various applications. The surface ligands not only dictate the formation of nanocrystals with diverse shapes but also serve as a colloidal stabilizer to prevent the suspended nanocrystals from aggregation during their synthesis or storage. By leveraging the facet selectivity of some surface ligands, one can further control the sites for growth or galvanic replacement to transform presynthesized nanocrystals into complex structures that are otherwise difficult to fabricate using conventional methods. Furthermore, the presence of surface ligands on nanocrystals also facilitates their applications in areas such as sensing, imaging, nanomedicine, and self-assembly. Despite their popular use in enhancing the properties of nanocrystals and thus optimizing their performance in a wide variety of applications, it remains a major challenge to quantitatively determine the coverage density of ligand molecules, not to mention the difficulty of substituting or removing them without compromising the surface structure and aggregation state of the nanocrystals.In this Account, we recapitulate our efforts in developing methods capable of qualitatively or quantitatively measuring, exchanging, and removing the surface ligands adsorbed on noble-metal nanocrystals. We begin with an introduction to the typical interactions between ligand molecules and surface atoms, followed by a discussion of the Langmuir model that can be used to describe the adsorption of surface ligands. It is also emphasized that the adsorption process may become very complex in the case of a polymeric ligand due to the variations in binding configuration and chain conformation. We then highlight the capabilities of various spectroscopy methods to analyze the adsorbed ligands qualitatively or quantitatively. Specifically, surface-enhanced Raman scattering, Fourier transform infrared, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy are three examples of qualitative methods that can be used to confirm the absence or presence of a surface ligand. On the other hand, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry can be used for quantitative measurements. Additionally, the coverage density of a ligand can be derived by analyzing the morphological changes during nanocrystal growth. We then discuss how the ligands present on the surface of metal nanocrystals can be exchanged directly or indirectly to meet the requirements of different applications. The former can be done using a ligand with stronger binding, whereas the latter is achieved by introducing a sacrificial shell to the surface of the nanocrystals. Furthermore, we highlight three additional strategies besides simple washing to remove the surface ligands, including calcination, heating in a solution, and UV-ozone treatment. Finally, we showcase three applications of metal nanocrystals in nanomedicine, tumor targeting, and self-assembly by taking advantage of the diversity of surface ligands bearing different functional groups. We also offer perspectives on the challenges and opportunities in realizing the full potential of surface ligands.

Silver Nanocubes: From Serendipity to Mechanistic Understanding, Rational Synthesis, and Niche Applications

Silver has long been interwoven into human history, and its uses have evolved from currency and jewelry to medicine, information technology, catalysis, and electronics. Within the last century, the development of nanomaterials has further solidified the importance of this element. Despite this long history, there was essentially no mechanistic understanding or experimental control of silver nanocrystal synthesis until about two decades ago. Here we aim to provide an account of the history and development of the colloidal synthesis of silver nanocubes, as well as some of their major applications. We begin with a description of the first accidental synthesis of silver nanocubes that spurred subsequent investigations into each of the individual components of the protocol, revealing piece by piece parts of the mechanistic puzzle. This is followed by a discussion of the various obstacles inherent to the original method alongside mechanistic details developed to optimize the synthetic protocol. Finally, we discuss a range of applications enabled by the plasmonic and catalytic properties of silver nanocubes, including localized surface plasmon resonance, surface-enhanced Raman scattering, metamaterials, and ethylene epoxidation, as well as further derivatization and development of size, shape, composition, and related properties.

Bridging Colloidal and Electrochemical Nanoparticle Growth with In Situ Electrochemical Measurements

ConspectusProspective applications involving the electrification of industrial chemical processes and electrical energy to chemical fuels interconversion as part of the energy transition to renewable energy sources have led to an increasing need for highly tailored nanostructures immobilized on electrode surfaces. Control of surface facet structure across material compositions is of particular importance for ensuring performance in such applications. Colloidal methods for producing shaped nanoparticles in solution are abundant, particularly for noble metals. However, significant technical challenges remain with respect to rationally designing syntheses for the novel compositions and morphologies required to sustainably enable the above technological advances as well as in developing methods for uniformly and reproducibly dispersing colloidally synthesized nanostructures on electrode surfaces. The direct synthesis of nanoparticles on electrodes using chemical reduction approaches remains challenging, though recent advances have been made for certain materials and structures. Electrochemical nanoparticle synthesis─where an applied current or potential instead of a chemical reducing agent drives the redox chemistry of nanoparticle growth─is poised to play an important role in advancing the fabrication of nanostructured electrodes. Specifically, this Account focuses on the colloidal-inspired design of electrochemical syntheses and the interplay between colloidal and electrochemical approaches in terms of understanding the fundamental chemical reaction mechanisms of nanoparticle growth. An initial discussion of the development of electrochemical particle syntheses that incorporate colloidal synthetic tools highlights the promising emergent capabilities that result from blending these two approaches. Furthermore, it demonstrates how existing colloidal syntheses can be directly translated to electrochemical growth on a conductive surface using real-time electrochemical measurements of the chemistry of the growth solution. Measuring the open circuit potential of a colloidal synthesis over time and then replicating that measured potential during electrochemical deposition leads to the formation of the same nanoparticle shape. These in situ open circuit and chronopotentiometric measurements also give fundamental insight about the changing chemical environment during particle growth. We highlight how these time-resolved electrochemical measurements, as well as correlated spectroelectrochemical monitoring of particle formation kinetics, enable the extraction of information regarding mechanisms of particle formation that is difficult to obtain using other approaches. This information can be translated back into colloidal synthesis design via a directed, intentional approach to synthetic development. We additionally explore the added flexibility of synthetic design for methods involving electrochemically driven reduction as compared to the use of chemical reducing agents. The Account concludes with a brief perspective on potential future directions in both fundamental studies and synthetic development enabled by this emerging integrated electrochemical approach.

Emerging 2D Metal Oxides: From Synthesis to Device Integration

2D metal oxides have aroused increasing attention in the field of electronics and optoelectronics due to their intriguing physical properties. In this review, an overview of recent advances on synthesis of 2D metal oxides and their electronic applications is presented. First, the tunable physical properties of 2D metal oxides that relate to the structure (various oxidation-state forms, polymorphism, etc.), crystallinity and defects (anisotropy, point defects, and grain boundary), and thickness (quantum confinement effect, interfacial effect, etc.) are discussed. Then, advanced synthesis methods for 2D metal oxides besides mechanical exfoliation are introduced and classified into solution process, vapor-phase deposition, and native oxidation on a metal source. Later, the various roles of 2D metal oxides in widespread applications, i.e., transistors, inverters, photodetectors, piezotronics, memristors, and potential applications (solar cell, spintronics, and superconducting devices) are discussed. Finally, an outlook of existing challenges and future opportunities in 2D metal oxides is proposed.

Coherent hexagonal platinum skin on nickel nanocrystals for enhanced hydrogen evolution activity

Metastable noble metal nanocrystals may exhibit distinctive catalytic properties to address the sluggish kinetics of many important processes, including the hydrogen evolution reaction under alkaline conditions for water-electrolysis hydrogen production. However, the exploration of metastable noble metal nanocrystals is still in its infancy and suffers from a lack of sufficient synthesis and electronic engineering strategies to fully stimulate their potential in catalysis. In this paper, we report a synthesis of metastable hexagonal Pt nanostructures by coherent growth on 3d transition metal nanocrystals such as Ni without involving galvanic replacement reaction, which expands the frontier of the phase-replication synthesis. Unlike noble metal substrates, the 3d transition metal substrate owns more crystal phases and lower cost and endows the hexagonal Pt skin with substantial compressive strains and programmable charge density, making the electronic properties particularly preferred for the alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction. The energy barriers are greatly reduced, pushing the activity to 133 mA cm_geo^-2 and 17.4 mA μg_Pt^-1 at -70 mV with 1.5 µg of Pt in 1 M KOH. Our strategy paves the way for metastable noble metal catalysts with tailored electronic properties for highly efficient and cost-effective energy conversion.

Morphology Effect of Photoconverted Silver Nanoparticles on the Performance of Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy Substrates

Nowadays, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrates are of great interest for many researchers, aiming to fabricate substrates with high sensitivity and low fabrication costs. In this study, we photoconverted Ag nanoparticles by using a simple and affordable red-green-blue light-emitting diode photoreactor. The obtained dispersions were transformed into a paste of nanoparticles and used to fabricate SERS substrates by a simple drop-casting process under controlled humidity conditions. The performance of these substrates was tested using p-aminothiophenol as a Raman probe. The results indicate that the particle shape has an influence on the Raman intensities and substrate sensitivity, showing a significant enhancement as the number of faces and vertices in the particle increases.

Site-Selective Chiral Growth of Anisotropic Au Triangular Nanoplates for Tuning the Optical Chirality

Site-selective chiral growth of anisotropic nanoparticles is of great importance to realize the plasmonic nanostructures with delicate geometry and desired optical chirality; however, it remains largely unexplored. This work demonstrates a controlled site-selective chiral growth system based on the seed-mediated growth of anisotropic Au triangular nanoplates. The site-selective chiral growth involves two distinct underlying pathways, faceted growth and island growth, which are interswitchable upon maneuvering the interplay of chiral molecules, surfactants, and reducing agents. The pathway switch governs the geometric and chirality evolution of Au triangular nanoplates, giving rise to tailorable circular dichroism spectra. The ability to tune the optical chirality in a controlled manner by manipulating the site-selective chiral growth pathway opens up a promising strategy for exploiting chiral metamaterials with increasing architectural complexity in chiroptical applications.

The role of crystallinity of palladium nanocrystals in ROS generation and cytotoxicity induction

Palladium (Pd) nanocrystals with different crystalline forms exhibit distinct enzyme-like activities in generating reactive oxygen species (ROS). How such crystallinity-dependent catalytic activity regulates potential cytotoxicity remains to be elucidated. In the present work, Pd nanocrystals with four different crystalline forms were synthesized, and the underlying mechanisms involved in ROS-mediated cytotoxicity were systematically revealed. Pd nanocrystals with the {100} (nanocubes) and {111} (nanooctahedrons and nanotetrahedrons) facets triggered cytotoxicity by generating singlet oxygen (¹O₂) and hydroxyl radicals (OH˙), respectively. Meanwhile, Pd nanoconcave-tetrahedrons, which had both the {110} and {111} facets, induced ROS-mediated cytotoxicity via activating the superoxide (O₂˙^-) pathway. Consumption of protons and generation of hydroxide during intracellular ROS conversion resulted in pH alkalization, eventually leading to cell death. Our findings emphasize the importance of facet-dependent ROS generation promoted by Pd nanocrystals. Furthermore, alkalization is identified as a new biomarker for analyzing ROS-mediated cytotoxicity.

Plate-Like Colloidal Metal Nanoparticles

The pseudo-two-dimensional (2D) morphology of plate-like metal nanoparticles makes them one of the most anisotropic, mechanistically understood, and tunable structures available. Although well-known for their superior plasmonic properties, recent progress in the 2D growth of various other materials has led to an increasingly diverse family of plate-like metal nanoparticles, giving rise to numerous appealing properties and applications. In this review, we summarize recent progress on the solution-phase growth of colloidal plate-like metal nanoparticles, including plasmonic and other metals, with an emphasis on mechanistic insights for different synthetic strategies, the crystallographic habits of different metals, and the use of nanoplates as scaffolds for the synthesis of other derivative structures. We additionally highlight representative self-assembly techniques and provide a brief overview on the attractive properties and unique versatility benefiting from the 2D morphology. Finally, we share our opinions on the existing challenges and future perspectives for plate-like metal nanomaterials.

Chloride enables the growth of Ag nanocubes and nanowires by making PVP binding facet-selective

Solution-phase synthesis of metal nanocrystals with multiple additives is a common strategy for control over nanocrystal shape, and thus control over their properties. However, few rules are available to predict the effect of multiple capping agents on metal nanocrystal shapes, making it hard to rationally design synthetic conditions. This work uses a combination of seed-mediated growth, single-crystal electrochemistry, and DFT calculations to determine the roles of PVP and Cl^- in the anisotropic growth of single-crystal and penta-twinned silver nanocrystals. Single-crystal seeds grow into truncated octahedra bounded by a mixture of {111} and {100} facets in the presence of 0.03-30 mM PVP, but when 3-6 μM Cl^- is added with PVP, the single-crystal seeds grow into cubes bounded by {100} facets. Electrochemical measurements on Ag(100) and Ag(111) single-crystal electrodes show PVP is a capping agent but it exhibits no selectivity for a particular facet. Addition of Cl^- to PVP further passivates Ag(100) but not Ag(111), leading to conditions that favor formation of nanocubes. DFT calculations indicate the preferential binding of Cl^- to Ag(100) causes preferential binding of PVP to Ag(100). The combined results indicate the presence or absence of Cl^- modulates binding of PVP to (100) facets, leading to the formation of nanocubes with Cl^-, or truncated octahedra without it.

Shape Transformation Mechanism of Gold Nanoplates

Shape control is of key importance in utilizing the structure-property relationship of nanocrystals. The high surface-to-volume ratio of nanocrystals induces dynamic surface reactions on exposed facets of nanocrystals, such as adsorption, desorption, and diffusion of surface atoms, all of which are important in overall shape transformation. However, it is difficult to track shape transformation of nanocrystals and understand the underlying mechanism at the level of distinguishing events on individual facets. Herein, we investigate changes of individual surface-exposed facets during diverse shape transformations of Au nanocrystals using liquid phase TEM in various chemical potentials and kinetic Monte Carlo simulations. The results reveal that the diffusion of surface atoms on nanocrystals is the governing factor in determining the final structure in shape transformation, causing the fast transformation of unstable facets to truncated morphology with minimized surface energy. The role of surface diffusion introduced here can be further applied to understanding the formation mechanism of variously shaped nanocrystals.

Functional Surfactant-Induced Long-Range Compressive Strain in Curved Ultrathin Nanodendrites Boosts Electrocatalysis

Curved ultrathin PtPd nanodendrites (CNDs) with long-range compressive strain and highly branched feature are first prepared by a functional surfactant-induced strategy. Precise synthesis realized the construction of both curved and flat PtPd nanodendrites (NDs) with the same atomic ratio, which contributed to exploration of the strain effect on electrocatalytic performance alone. Abundant evidence is provided to confirm that the long-range compressive strain in curved PtPd architectures can effectively tailor the local coordination environment of active sites, lower the position of the d-band center, weaken the adsorption energy of the intermediates (e.g., H* and CO*), and ultimately increase their intrinsic activity. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations further reveal that the introduction of compressive strain weakens the Gibbs free-energy of the intermediate (ΔG_H*), which is favorable for accelerating the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) kinetics. A similar enhanced electrocatalytic performance can also be found in the methanol oxidation reaction (MOR).

Metallene-related materials for electrocatalysis and energy conversion

As a member of graphene analogs, metallenes are a class of two-dimensional materials with atomic thickness and well-controlled surface atomic arrangement made of metals or alloys. When utilized as catalysts, metallenes exhibit distinctive physicochemical properties endowed from the under-coordinated metal atoms on the surface, making them highly competitive candidates for energy-related electrocatalysis and energy conversion systems. Significantly, their catalytic activity can be precisely tuned through the chemical modification of their surface and subsurface atoms for efficient catalyst engineering. This minireview summarizes the recent progress in the synthesis and characterization of metallenes, together with their use as electrocatalysts toward reactions for energy conversion. In the Synthesis section, we pay particular attention to the strategies designed to tune their exposed facets, composition, and surface strain, as well as the porosity/cavity, defects, and crystallinity on the surface. We then discuss the electrocatalytic properties of metallenes in terms of oxygen reduction, hydrogen evolution, alcohol and acid oxidation, carbon dioxide reduction, and nitrogen reduction reaction, with a small extension regarding photocatalysis. At the end, we offer perspectives on the challenges and opportunities with respect to the synthesis, characterization, modeling, and application of metallenes.

Morphology control through the synthesis of metal-organic frameworks

Designable morphology and predictable properties are the most challenging goals in material engineering. Features such as shape, size, porosity, agglomeration ratio significantly affect the final properties of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and can be regulated throughout synthesis parameters but require a deep understanding of the mechanisms of MOFs formation. Herein, we systematically summarize the effects of the individual synthesis factors, such as pH of reaction mixture, including acidic or basic character of modulators, temperature, solvents types, surfactants type and content and ionic liquids on the morphology of growing MOFs. We identified main mechanisms of MOFs' growth leading to different morphology of final particles and next systematically discuss the effect of miscellaneous parameters on MOFs morphology based on the main mechanisms related to the nucleation, growth and formation of final MOFs structure, including coordination modulation, protonation/deprotonation acting and modulation by surfactants or capping agents. The effect of microwaves and ultrasound employment during synthesis is also considered due to their affecting especially nucleation and particles growing steps during MOFs formation.

Template-directed growth of Ag nanostructures: soft templates versus hard templates

Hard template-directed growth methods present a compelling route for the synthesis of Ag nanostructures with precise size control. Meanwhile, soft template methods are effective and flexible for the synthesis of Ag nanostructures with various morphologies. However, the role of the soft template is ambiguous and obviously neglected in hard template-directed growth processes due to the strong confinement effect of the hard template, limiting the diversity of Ag nanostructures that can be obtained. Herein, we design Au nanoframes with deformable head structures as a hard template while using cetyltrimethylammonium chloride as a soft template, to direct the growth of Ag atoms on Au nanobipyramid seeds. When using the Au nanoframes with a closed head, the longitudinal growth of the Ag atoms is clearly limited by the hard template, leading to the formation of thick Ag nanorods with a five-fold twinned structure. The soft template starts to influence the growth process when the head structure of the Au nanoframes becomes hollow. In particular, the confinement effect of the hard template can be completely broken by selectively strengthening the role of the soft template, promoting the production of slender Ag nanorods similar to the results obtained in the absence of the hard template. Our results indicate that the morphology of the Ag nanostructures depends on the competition between the qualitatively confined energies of the hard and soft templates during the template-directed growth process. Moreover, this confined growth mechanism is also verified by the successful construction of various Ag nanostructures. The understanding of the collaborative competition mechanism between the soft and hard templates presents a great opportunity to construct novel Ag nanostructures through a template-directed method.

Colloidal Synthesis of Metal Nanocrystals: From Asymmetrical Growth to Symmetry Breaking

Nanocrystals offer a unique platform for tailoring the physicochemical properties of solid materials to enhance their performances in various applications. While most work on controlling their shapes revolves around symmetrical growth, the introduction of asymmetrical growth and thus symmetry breaking has also emerged as a powerful route to enrich metal nanocrystals with new shapes and complex morphologies as well as unprecedented properties and functionalities. The success of this route critically relies on our ability to lift the confinement on symmetry by the underlying unit cell of the crystal structure and/or the initial seed in a systematic manner. This Review aims to provide an account of recent progress in understanding and controlling asymmetrical growth and symmetry breaking in a colloidal synthesis of noble-metal nanocrystals. With a touch on both the nucleation and growth steps, we discuss a number of methods capable of generating seeds with diverse symmetry while achieving asymmetrical growth for mono-, bi-, and multimetallic systems. We then showcase a variety of symmetry-broken nanocrystals that have been reported, together with insights into their growth mechanisms. We also highlight their properties and applications and conclude with perspectives on future directions in developing this class of nanomaterials. It is hoped that the concepts and existing challenges outlined in this Review will drive further research into understanding and controlling the symmetry breaking process.

Electroless deposition of tellurium nanowires in eutectic solvents using immobilised silver islands

In this work we demonstrate a new approach towards the electroless deposition of tellurium nanowires in deep eutectic solvents. Unlike most electroless deposition where the substrate is sacrificed to drive the reduction, our process uses immobilised silver epoxy islands on gold films to give localised galvanic displacement of the silver, resulting in an even growth of wires across the entire gold electrode surface. We demonstrate the strong dependence of the nanostructure on the experimental conditions, with changes in bath temperature, tellurium concentration and the halide component of the solvent leading to sizeable alterations in the nanowire geometry. This demonstrates electroless deposition as a promising synthetic route towards low-dimensional tellurium nanostructures.

Inorganic nanomaterials for intelligent photothermal antibacterial applications

Antibiotics are currently the main therapeutic agent for bacterial infections, but they have led to bacterial resistance, which has become a worldwide problem that needs to be addressed. The emergence of inorganic nanomaterials provides a new opportunity for the prevention and treatment of bacterial infection. With the continuous development of nanoscience, more and more inorganic nanomaterials have been used to treat bacterial infections. However, single inorganic nanoparticles (NPs) are often faced with problems such as large dosage, strong toxic and side effects, poor therapeutic effect and so on, so the combination of inorganic nano-materials and photothermal therapy (PTT) has become a promising treatment. PTT effectively avoids the problem of bacterial drug resistance, and can also reduce the dosage of inorganic nanomaterials to a certain extent, greatly improving the antibacterial effect. In this paper, we summarize several common synthesis methods of inorganic nanomaterials, and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of several typical inorganic nanomaterials which can be used in photothermal treatment of bacterial infection, such as precious metal-based nanomaterials, metal-based nanomaterials and carbon-based nanomaterials. In addition, we also analyze the future development trend of the remaining problems. We hope that these discussions will be helpful to the future research of near-infrared (NIR) photothermal conversion inorganic nanomaterials.

Facet engineering of ultrathin two-dimensional materials

Ultrathin two-dimensional (2D) materials exhibit broad application prospects in many fields due to the enhanced specific surface area to volume ratio and quantum confinement effect. Because of the atomic thickness and various orientations, ultrathin 2D materials exposing specific facets have drawn great attention for various applications in catalysis, batteries, optoelectronics, magnetism, epitaxial template for material growth, etc. Though maintaining the atomic thickness of 2D materials while controlling crystal facets is an enormous challenge, breakthroughs are being made. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the recent advances in the facet engineering of 2D materials, ranging from a basic understanding of facets and the corresponding approaches and the significance of facet engineering. We also propose current challenges and forecast future development directions including the establishment of a facet database, the fabrication of new 2D materials, the design of specific substrates, and the introduction of theoretical calculations and in situ characterization techniques. This review can guide researchers to design ultrathin 2D materials with unique and distinct facets and provide an insight into the applications of energy, magnetism, optics, biomedicine, and other fields.

Green chemistry and first-principles theory enhance catalysis: synthesis and 6-fold catalytic activity increase of sub-5 nm Pd and Pt@Pd nanocubes

Synthesizing metal nanoparticles with fine control of size, shape and surface properties is of high interest for applications such as catalysis, nanoplasmonics, and fuel cells. In this contribution, we demonstrate that the citrate-coated surfaces of palladium (Pd) and platinum (Pt)@Pd nanocubes with a lateral length <5 nm and low polydispersity in shape achieve superior catalytic properties. The synthesis achieves great control of the nanoparticle's physico-chemical properties by using only biogenic reagents and bromide ions in water while being fast, easy to perform and scalable. The role of the seed morphology is pivotal as Pt single crystal seeds are necessary to achieve low polydispersity in shape and prevent nanorods formation. In addition, electrochemical measurements demonstrate the abundancy of Pd{100} surface facets at a macroscopic level, in line with information inferred from TEM analysis. Quantum density functional theory calculations indicate that the kinetic origin of cubic Pd nanoshapes is facet-selective Pd reduction/deposition on Pd(111). Moreover, we underline both from an experimental and theoretical point of view that bromide alone does not induce nanocube formation without the synergy with formic acid. The superior performance of these highly controlled nanoparticles to perform the catalytic reduction of 4-nitrophenol was proved: polymer-free and surfactant-free Pd nanocubes outperform state-of-the-art materials by a factor >6 and a commercial Pd/C catalyst by more than one order of magnitude.

Alkynyl ligands-induced growth of ultrathin nanowires arrays

Ligands are almost essential in the synthesis of nanostructures. In this work, we introduce the alkynyl ligands into the synthesis of ultrathin gold (Au) nanowires arrays. The strong binding affinity of the alkynyl ligands enables one-dimensional (1D) growth via the active surface growth mechanism. The scope of the ligand generality was systematically investigated, and the alkynyl ligand-induced nanowire growth processes were compared and contrasted with those involving thiolated ligands. While strong ligands are usually difficult to dissociate from the nanostructure surface and therefore problematic for post-synthetic processing, the alkynyl ligands are readily dissociable, making the alkynyl ligand-stabilized Au nanowires potentially more modifiable and applicable. As a demonstration, direct palladium (Pd) deposition on the Au nanowires was successfully carried out without any ligand exchange process.

Control over Ligand-Exchange Positions of Thiolate-Protected Gold Nanoclusters Using Steric Repulsion of Protecting Ligands

Organic ligands on gold nanoclusters play important roles in regulating the structures of gold cores. However, the impact of the number and positions of the protecting ligands on gold-core structures remains unclear. We isolated thiolate-protected Au₂₅ cluster anions, [Au₂₅(SC₂Ph)₁₇(Por)₁]^- and [Au₂₅(SC₂Ph)₁₆(Por)₂]^- (SC₂Ph = 2-phenylethanethiolate), obtained by ligand exchange of [Au₂₅(SC₂Ph)₁₈]^- with one or two porphyrinthiolate (Por) ligands as mixtures of regioisomers. The ratio of two regioisomers in [Au₂₅(SC₂Ph)₁₇(Por)₁]^- as measured by ¹H NMR spectroscopy revealed that the selectivity could be controlled by the steric hindrance of the incoming thiols. Extended X-ray absorption fine structure studies of a series of porphyrin-coordinated gold nanoclusters clarified that the Au₁₃ icosahedral core in the Au₂₅ cluster was distorted through steric repulsion between porphyrin thiolates and phenylethanethiolates. This paper reveals interesting insights into the importance of the steric structures of protecting ligands for control over core structures in gold nanoclusters.

Copper Phosphonate Lamella Intermediates Control the Shape of Colloidal Copper Nanocrystals

Understanding the structure and behavior of intermediates in chemical reactions is the key to developing greater control over the reaction outcome. This principle is particularly important in the synthesis of metal nanocrystals (NCs), where the reduction, nucleation, and growth of the reaction intermediates will determine the final size and shape of the product. The shape of metal NCs plays a major role in determining their catalytic, photochemical, and electronic properties and, thus, the potential applications of the material. In this work, we demonstrate that layered coordination polymers, called lamellae, are reaction intermediates in Cu NC synthesis. Importantly, we discover that the lamella structure can be fine-tuned using organic ligands of different lengths and that these structural changes control the shape of the final NC. Specifically, we show that short-chain phosphonate ligands generate lamellae that are stable enough at the reaction temperature to facilitate the growth of Cu nuclei into anisotropic Cu NCs, being primarily triangular plates. In contrast, lamellae formed from long-chain ligands lose their structure and form spherical Cu NCs. The synthetic approach presented here provides a versatile tool for the future development of metal NCs, including other anisotropic structures.
