Abstract
In this work, the chemical reduction of a hybrid pyracylene-hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronene (HPH) nanographene was investigated with different alkali metals (Na, K, Rb) to reveal its remarkable multielectron acceptor abilities. The UV-vis and 1H NMR spectroscopy monitoring of the stepwise reduction reactions supports the existence of all intermediate reduction states up to the hexaanion for HPH. Tuning the experimental conditions enabled the synthesis of the HPH anions with gradually increasing reduction states (up to -5) isolated with different alkali metal ions as crystalline materials. The single-crystal X-ray diffraction structure analysis demonstrates that the highly negatively charged HPH anions (-4 and -5) exhibit a drastic geometry change from boat-shaped (observed in the neutral parent, mono- and dianions) to a chair conformation, which was proved to be fully reversible by NMR spectroscopy. DFT calculations show that this geometry change is induced by an enhanced interaction between the coordinated metal ions and negatively charged HPH core in the chair conformation.

Abstract
Hybridizing two heterocomponents to construct a built-in electric field (BIEF) at the interface represents a significant strategy for facilitating charge separation in carbon dioxide (CO2)-photoreduction. However, the unidirectional nature of BIEFs formed by various low-dimensional materials poses challenges in adequately segregating the photogenerated carriers produced in bulk. In this study, leveraging zinc oxide (ZnO) nanodisks, a sulfurization reaction is employed to fabricate Z-scheme ZnO/zinc sulfide (ZnS) heterojunctions featuring a multiple-order BIEF. These heterojunctions reveal distinctive interfacial structures characterized by two semicoherent phase boundaries. The cathodoluminescence 2D maps and density functional theory calculation results demonstrate that the direction of the multiple-order BIEF spans from ZnS to ZnO. This directional alignment significantly fosters the spatial separation of photogenerated electrons and holes within ZnS nanoparticles and enhances CO2-to-carbon monoxide photoreduction performance (3811.7 µmol h-1 g-1). The findings present a novel pathway for structurally designing BIEFs within heterojunctions, while providing fresh insights into the migratory behavior of photogenerated carriers across interfaces.

Abstract
Two novel derivatives of the C70 fullerene with 9- and 10-membered cage openings were obtained by means of oxidation and decarbonylation of C70(CF3)8. The major product, C70(O)(CF3)8O2, features a cleaved C-C bond transformed into two carbonyl functions plus an ether bridge. The second product, C69O(CF3)8O, has one of the carbonyls replaced with another ether bridge. We provide a DFT analysis of the possible formation pathways to give the oxidized compounds under the action of pyridine N-oxide.

Abstract
The availability of hydrogen energy from water splitting through the electrocatalytic route is strongly dependent on the efficiency, durability, and cost of the electrocatalysts. Herein, a novel Bi2S3-covered Sm2O3 (Bi2S3-Sm2O3) nanocomposite electrocatalyst was developed by a hydrothermal route for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The electrochemical properties were studied in 1.00 mol KOH solution after coating the target material on the stainless-steel substrate (SS). Physical analysis via XRD, FTIR, IV, TEM/EDX, and XPS revealed that the Bi2S3-Sm2O3 composite possesses metallic surface states, thereby displaying unconventional electron dynamics and purity of phases. The Bi2S3-Sm2O3 composite shows outstanding OER activity with a low overpotential of 197 mV and a Tafel slope of 74 mV dec-1 at a 10 mA cm-2 current density as compared to pure Bi2S3 and Sm2O3. Meanwhile, the composite catalyst retains high stability even after 100 h of the chronoamperometry test. Thus, this work unveils a new avenue for the speedy flow of electrons, which is attributed to the synergetic effect between Bi2S3 and Sm2O3, as well as enriched interfacial defects, which exhibit greater oxygen adsorption capability with improved electronic assemblies in the active interfacial region. In addition, the introduced porous structure in core-shell Bi2S3-Sm2O3 provides extraordinary electrical properties. Thus, this article offers a realistic framework for electrochemical energy generation.

Abstract
Herein, we report divergent additions of 2,2'-diazidobiphenyls to C60 and Sc3 N@Ih -C80 . In stark contrast to that of the previously reported bis-azide additions, the unexpected cascade reaction leads to the dearomative formation of azafulleroids 2 fused with a 7-6-5-membered ring system in the case of C60 . In contrast, the corresponding reaction with Sc3 N@Ih -C80 switches to the C-H insertion pathway, thereby resulting in multiple isomers, including a carbazole-derived [6,6]-azametallofulleroid 3 and a [5,6]-azametallofulleroid 4 and an unusual 1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyrrolo[3,2-c]carbazole-derived metallofullerene 5, whose molecular structures have been unambiguously determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses. Among them, the addition type of 5 is observed for the first time in all reported additions of azides to fullerenes. Furthermore, unexpected isomerizations from 3 to 5 and from 4 to 5 have been discovered, providing the first examples of the isomerization of an azafulleroid to a carbazole-derived fullerene rather than an aziridinofullerene. In particular, the isomerism of the [5,6]-isomer 4 to the [5,6]-isomer 5 is unprecedented in fullerene chemistry, contradicting the present understanding that isomerization generally occurs between [5,6]- and [6,6]-isomers. Control experiments have been carried out to rationalize the reaction mechanism. Furthermore, representative azafulleroids have been applied in organic solar cells, thereby resulting in improved power conversion efficiencies.

Abstract
The electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is one of the most studied and promising processes for hydrogen fuel generation. Single-atom catalysts have been shown to exhibit ultra-high HER catalytic activity, but the harsh preparation conditions and the low single-atom loading hinder their practical applications. Furthermore, promoting hydrogen evolution reaction kinetics, especially in alkaline electrolytes, remains as an important challenge. Herein, Pt/C60 catalysts with high-loading, high-dispersion single-atomic platinum anchored on C60 are achieved through a room-temperature synthetic strategy. Pt/C60-2 exhibits high HER catalytic performance with a low overpotential (η10) of 25 mV at 10 mA cm-2. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the Pt-C60 polymeric structures in Pt/C60-2 favors water adsorption, and the shell-like charge redistribution around the Pt-bonding region induced by the curved surfaces of two adjacent C60 facilitates the desorption of hydrogen, thus favoring fast reaction kinetics for hydrogen evolution.

XRD, Raman spectroscopy, and FTIR spectroscopy confirmed the formation of the La2O3-C60 nanocomposite with TEM nano-graphs, and EDX mapping exhibits the loading of C60 on La2O3 particles. XPS confirmed the presence of varying oxidation states of La3+/La2+. The electrochemical capacitive properties were tested by CV, EIS, GCD, ECSA, and LSV, which indicated that the La2O3-C60 nanocomposite can be effectively used as an electrode material for durable and efficient supercapacitors. The photocatalytic test using methylene blue (MB) dye revealed the complete photodegradation of the MB dye under UV light irradiation after 30 min by a La2O3-C60 catalyst with a reusability up to 7 cycles. The lower energy bandgap, presence of deep-level emissions, and lower recombination rate of photoinduced charge carriers in the La2O3-C60 nanocomposite than those of bare La2O3 are responsible for enhanced photocatalytic activity with low-power UV irradiation. The fabrication of multi-functional and highly efficient electrode materials and photocatalysts such as La2O3-C60 nanocomposites is beneficial for the energy industry and environmental remediation applications.

Abstract
The mass transfer efficiency and structural stability of the electrode are critical for industrialized water electrolysis operations. Herein, the biomimicry-inspired design of Ni3N/FeNi3N/NF nanoarrays with a fish scale-like structure, which endowed the Ni3N/FeNi3N/NF nanoarrays with rapid infiltration of aqueous solution within 60 ms and 169° bubble contact angle, is demonstrated. The optimal Ni3N/FeNi3N/NF sample displayed catalytic activity with hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) overpotentials of only 48 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and 102 mV at 100 mA cm-2. Similarly, the overpotential of the anodic-coupled urea oxidation reaction (UOR) was only 1.3 V at 10 mA cm-2 and 1.35 V at 100 mA cm-2. Besides, the small impact resulting from the rapid bubble extraction within the Ni3N/FeNi3N/NF nanoarrays ensured excellent HER cycling stability over 100 h at a current density of 50 mA cm-2. The further scale-up experiment suggests the industrialization prospects of the prepared Ni3N/FeNi3N/NF electrocatalysts.

Abstract
The electrochemical and paramagnetic properties of endohedral metallofullerenes (EMFs) have drawn extensive attention due to their huge potential in the fields of molecular devices, biomedicines, quantum information processing, etc. Exohedral modification of the fullerene carbon cage, such as in the classical Prato reaction, is an effective and facile approach to regulate the electronic structure and molecular dynamics of EMFs. In this work, novel pyrrolidine products of Sc3N@C80 and Sc3C2@C80 were successfully synthesized via Prato reactions using L-cysteine and paraformaldehyde. Structure characterizations demonstrated that two regioisomers with a [5,6] and a [6,6] cycloaddition on the Ih-C80 cage were obtained both for Sc3N@C80 and Sc3C2@C80. Besides, the [6,6]-monoadduct of Sc3N@C80 was thermally stable while the [5,6]-monoadduct exhibited a retro-cycloaddition ability to recover the pristine Sc3N@C80. Electrochemical measurements revealed that the redox potential of Sc3N@C80 could be tuned via such exohedral modifications. Furthermore, the paramagnetic property and internal dynamics of the encapsulated Sc3C2 cluster of Sc3C2@C80 can be well-regulated by controlling the spin density of the molecule. The present work could provide a new approach to regulate the electronic and/or spin structure of EMFs.

Abstract
High-performance electrocatalysts are critical to support emerging electrochemical energy storage and conversion technologies. Graphite-derived materials, including fullerenes, carbon nanotubes, and graphene, have been recognized as promising electrocatalysts and electrocatalyst supports for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), and carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR). Effective modification/functionalization of graphite-derived materials can promote higher electrocatalytic activity, stability, and durability. In this review, the mechanisms and evaluation parameters for the above-outlined electrochemical reactions are introduced first. Then, we emphasize the preparation methods for graphite-derived materials and modification strategies. We further highlight the importance of the structural changes of modified graphite-derived materials on electrocatalytic activity and stability. Finally, future directions and perspectives towards new and better graphite-derived materials are presented.

Abstract
A nitrogen-doped fullerene dimer is synthesized and compounded with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) to construct a low-dimensional and metal-free 0D-1D heterostructure for electrocatalytic water oxidation. The (C59N)2/MWCNTs heterostructure exhibits a highly efficient performance, as verified by both first-principles density functional theory and experimental studies. The *O → *OOH process is confirmed as the rate-determining step of water oxidation. The negatively charged N-doping leads to electronic redistribution and intermolecular charge transfer and thus reduces the uphill free energies of intermediates on the (C59N)2/MWCNTs interface. Therefore, the (C59N)2/MWCNTs heterostructure has great potential to emit light and heat in metal-free-based electrocatalytic water oxidation.

Abstract
A non-metal covalent hybrid of fullerene and graphene was synthesized in one step via fluorographene chemistry. Its electrocatalytic performance for the hydrogen evolution reaction and durability was ascribed to intrahybrid charge-transfer phenomena, exploiting the electron-accepting properties of C60 and the high conductivity and large surface area of graphene.

Abstract
The simplicity of fullerenes as assembled components provides attractive opportunities for basic understanding in self-assembly research. We applied in situ reactive methods to the self-assembly process of C60 molecules with melamine/ethylenediamine components in solution, resulting in a novel type of fullerene assemblies, micron-sized two-dimensional, amorphous shape-regular objects, fullerene rosettes. ATR−FTIR spectra, XPS, and TGA results suggest that the melamine/ethylenediamine components strongly interact and/or are covalently linked with fullerenes in the fullerene rosettes. The broad peak for layer spacing in the XRD patterns of the fullerene rosettes corresponds roughly to the interdigitated fullerene bilayer or monolayer of modified fullerene molecules. The fullerene rosettes are made from the accumulation of bilayer/monolayer assemblies of hybridized fullerenes in low crystallinity. Prototype sensor systems were fabricated upon immobilization of the fullerene rosettes onto surfaces of a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM), and selective sensing of formic acid was demonstrated as preliminary results for social-demanded toxic material sensing. The QCM sensor with fullerene rosette is categorized as one of the large-response sensors among reported examples. In selectivity to formic acids against basic guests (formic acid/pyridine >30) or aromatic guests (formic acid/toluene >110), the fullerene rosette-based QCM sensor also showed superior performance.

Abstract
At present, the potential role of the AgNPs/endo-fullerene molecule metal nano-composite has been evaluated over the biosystems in-vitro. The intra-atomic configuration of the fullerene molecule (C60) has been studied in-vitro for the anti-proliferative activity of human breast adenocarcinoma (MDA-MB-231) cell lines and antimicrobial activity against a few human pathogens that have been augmented with the pristine surface plasmonic electrons and antibiotic activity of AgNPs. Furthermore, FTIR revealed the basic vibrational signatures at ~3300 cm-1, 1023 cm-1, 1400 cm-1 for O-H, C-O, and C-H groups, respectively, for the carbon and oxygen atoms of the C60 molecule. NMR studies exhibited the different footprints and magnetic moments at ~7.285 ppm, explaining the unique underlying electrochemical attributes of the fullerene molecule. Such unique electronic and physico-chemical properties of the caged carbon structure raise hope for applications into the drug delivery domain. The in-vitro dose-dependent application of C60 elicits a toxic response against both the breast adenocarcinoma cell lines and pathogenic microbes. That enables the use of AgNPs decorated C60 endo fullerene molecules to design an effective anti-cancerous drug delivery and antimicrobial agent in the future, bringing a revolutionary change in the perspective of a treatment regime.

Abstract
The three-component annulation reactions of C60, alkyl isocyanide, and dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate (DMAD) or unsymmetric alkynes are investigated to afford cyclopent-2-en-1-imino- and ketenimine methano-[60]fullerene derivatives, which, upon hydration in the presence of acid, yield the corresponding fullerene amides. Dimethyl 2,3-pentadienedioate, the allene counterpart of DMAD, and ethyl buta-2,3-dienoate undergo four-component annulation with C60, alkyl isocyanide, and water under similar conditions to yield cyclopentano-[60]fullerene derivatives with similar amide groups.

Abstract
Binding of carbon monoxide, CO, and its activation on the surface of the FenCumCO (n + m = 6) clusters are studied in this work. Using the BPW91/6-311 + G(2d) method, we have found that adsorption of the CO molecule on the surface of FenCum (n + m = 6) clusters is thermochemically favorable. Atop and bridge CO cluster coordinations appear for pure, Fe6 and Cu6, and mixed, Fe2Cu4 and Fe4Cu2, clusters. Threefold coordination takes place for Fe3Cu3-CO where the CO bond length, dCO, suffers a largest increase from 1.128 ± 0.014 Å for bare CO up to 1.21 Å. The CO stretching, νCO, as an indicator for the CO bond weakening is redshifted, from 2099 ± 4 cm-1 for isolated CO up to 1690 cm-1 for Fe3Cu3CO and 1678 cm-1 for Fe6CO. In addition, in Cu6CO, the strongest CO bond is slightly weakened as it has a bond length of 1.15 Å and a νCO of 2029 cm-1. There is a correlation between the CO bond weakening and the increase of CO coordination in FenCumCO, which in turns promotes the transference of charges from the metal core into the antibonding orbitals of CO. Substitution of up to three Cu atoms in Fe6 increases the adsorption energies and the activation of CO. Indeed, FenCum (n + m = 6) are promising clusters to catalyze CO dissociation, particularly Fe3Cu3, Fe5Cu, and Fe6, which have large CO bond lengths and CO adsorption energies. The Bader analysis of the electronic density indicates that FenCumCO species with threefold coordination show a rise in the C-O covalent character due to the less electronic polarization. They also show important M → CO charge transfer, which favors the weakening of the CO bond.

Abstract
The electrocatalytic properties of some endohedral fullerenes for hydrogen evolution reactions (HER) were recently predicted by DFT calculations. Nonetheless, the experimental catalytic performance under realistic electrochemical environments of these 0D-nanomaterials have not been explored. Here, for the first time, we disclose the HER electrocatalytic behavior of seven M3N@2n (2n = 68, 78, and 80) fullerenes (Gd3N@Ih(7)-C80, Y3N@Ih(7)-C80, Lu3N@Ih(7)-C80, Sc3N@Ih(7)-C80, Sc3N@D5h(6)-C80, Sc3N@D3h(5)-C78, and Sc3N@D3(6140)-C68) using a combination of experimental and theoretical techniques. The non-IPR Sc3N@D3(6140)-C68 compound exhibited the best catalytic performance toward the generation of molecular hydrogen, exhibiting an onset potential of -38 mV vs RHE, a very high mass activity of 1.75 A·mg-1 at -0.4 V vs RHE, and an excellent electrochemical stability, retaining 96% of the initial current after 24 h. The superior performance was explained on the basis of the fused pentagon rings, which represent a new and promising HER catalytic motif.

Abstract
The first example of metal-free-catalyzed multicomponent annulation reaction of [60]fullerene has been developed for concise and efficient construction of novel [60]fullerene-fused 1,2-tetrahydrocarbazoles. Using inexpensive and readily available I2 as a catalyst, [60]fullerene, ketones, and indoles undergo a formal [2+2+2] annulation process to conveniently assemble diverse 1,2-tetrahydrocarbazoles. Mechanistic studies indicate that this reaction proceeds through I2-promoted generation of a 3-vinylindole structure with the characteristics of a conjugated diene followed by cycloaddition to [60]fullerene.

The development of low-dimensional (LD) supramolecular materials with multifunctional electrocatalytic properties has sparked the attention of the catalysis community. Herein, we report the synthesis of a new class of 0D-2D heterostructures composed of boron carbon nitride nanosheets (BCN NSs) and fullerene molecules (C60/F) that exhibit multifunctional electrocatalytic properties for the hydrogen evolution/oxidation reactions (HER/HOR) and the oxygen evolution/reduction reactions (OER/ORR). The electrocatalytic properties were studied with varying F:BCN weight ratios to optimize the intermolecular electron transfer (ET) from the BCN NSs to the electron-accepting C60 molecules. The nanohybrid supramolecular material with 10 wt % F in BCN NSs (10% F/BCN) exhibited the largest Raman and C 1s binding energy shifts, which were associated with greater cooperativity interactions and enhanced ET processes at the F/BCN interface. This synergistic interfacial phenomenon resulted in highly active catalytic sites that markedly boosted electrocatalytic activity of the material. The 10% F/BCN showed the highest tetrafunctional catalytic performance, outperforming the OER catalytic activity of commercial RuO2 catalysts with a η10 of 390 mV and very competitive onset potential values of -0.042 and 0.92 V vs RHE for HER and ORR, respectively, and a current density value of 1.47 mA cm-2 at 0.1 V vs RHE with an ultralow ΔGH* value of -0.03 eV toward the HOR process. Additionally, the 10% F/BCN catalyst was also used as both cathode and anode in a water splitting device, delivering a cell potential of 1.61 V to reach a current density of 10 mA cm-2.
