Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopic Evidence of Key Intermediate Species and Role of NiFe Dual-Catalytic Center in Water Oxidation

Ce-4f as an electron-modulation reservoir weakening Fe-O bond to induce iron vacancies in CeFevNi hydroxide for enhancing oxygen evolution reaction

Designing novel rare-earth-transition metal composites is at the forefront of electrocatalyst research. However, the modulation of transition metal electronic structures by rare earths to induce vacancy defects and enhance electrochemical performance has rarely been reported. In this study, we systematically investigate the mechanism by which Ce-4f electron modulation weakens the Fe-O bond, thereby altering the electronic structure in CeFevNi hydroxide to improve oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance. Theoretical calculations and experimental characterizations reveal that Ce-4f orbitals function as electron-modulation reservoirs, capable not only of retaining or donating electrons but also of influencing the material's electronic structure. Moreover, Ce-4f bands optimize the Fe lower Hubbard bands (LHB) and O-2p bands, leading to weakened Fe-O bonds and the formation of cationic vacancies. This change results in the upshift of the d-band center at the active sites, favoring the reaction energy barrier for oxygen intermediates in the OER process. The synthesized catalyst demonstrated an overpotential of 201 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and a lifetime exceeding 200 h at 100 mA cm-2 under alkaline conditions. This work offers a proof-of-concept for the application of the mechanism of rare earth-induced transition metal vacancy defects, providing a general guideline for the design and development of novel highly efficient catalysts.

Activating active motifs in Ni-Fe oxide by introducing dual-defect for oxygen evolution reaction in alkaline seawater

Developing simple and energy-saving pathways to prepare high-efficient and robust non-noble metal based electrocatalysts remains a huge challenge to hydrogen production from seawater electrolysis. Here we demonstrate a facile hydrothermal-calcination-etching approach that simultaneously achieves the required surface N doping and Fe vacancies generation to activate the Ni-O-Fe active motifs in N-vFe-NiFe2O4/NF. The unique localized environments (Ni-N-Fe structures and unsaturated O- and N-coordination) due to dual-defect strategy can effectively regulate the electronic structure of the Ni-O-Fe motif to make the motif more reactive. As a result, the N-vFe-NiFe2O4/NF catalyst exhibits overpotentials of 210, 213 and 222 mV to deliver 100 mA cm-2 in 1.0 M KOH, simulated seawater and alkaline seawater environments, respectively. Theoretical calculations prove that the Ni-O-Fe structure is the active motif and that the presence of special localized environments can optimize the adsorption of key intermediates on the activated active motifs.

WO3-x as an activation medium to prompt overall water splitting of NiFe-based electrocatalyst

The efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is crucial for various electrochemical processes, especially for overall water splitting (OWS). In this study, we focus on the utilization of WO3-x as an activation medium to enhance the OER performance of NiFe-based electrocatalysts. Firstly, we synthesize WO3-x nanowires supported on nickel foam (NF) and then incorporate NiFe on WO3-x nanowires by a simple hydrothermal method. The WO3-x self-supported NiFe (Oxy)hydroxide (denoted as NiFe-W-O/NF) shows a three-dimensional stereostructure composed of ultrathin nanosheets (∼ 4.0 nm). This unique structure provides a large open surface for fuller diffusion of the electrolyte while exposing more active sites. The electronic interaction of tri-centers of NiFeW accelerates the surface reconstruction process of γ-NiOOH and FeOOH, which are converted into the main active species in a short time. The electrochemical measurements confirm that the NiFe-W-O/NF has low OER overpotentials (233 mV at 10 mA cm-2, 298 mV at 100 mA cm-2) and excellent stability (100 h in total) in 1 M KOH electrolyte. In addition, the NiFe-W-O/NF || NiFe-W-O/NF battery also exhibits a low cell voltage (1.52 V at 10 mA cm-2) with a stable lifetime (50 h) under alkaline conditions. These results highlight the great potential of NiFe-W-O/NF for practical applications.

Oxygen Functional Groups Regulate Cobalt-Porphyrin Molecular Electrocatalyst for Acidic H2O2 Electrosynthesis at Industrial-Level Current

Electrosynthesis of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) based on proton exchange membrane (PEM) reactor represents a promising approach to industrial-level H2O2 production, while it is hampered by the lack of high-efficiency electrocatalysts in acidic medium. Herein, we present a strategy for the specific oxygen functional group (OFG) regulation to promote the H2O2 selectivity up to 92 % in acid on cobalt-porphyrin molecular assembled with reduced graphene oxide. In situ X-ray adsorption spectroscopy, in situ Raman spectroscopy and Kelvin probe force microscopy combined with theoretical calculation unravel that different OFGs exert distinctive regulation effects on the electronic structure of Co center through either remote (carboxyl and epoxy) or vicinal (hydroxyl) interaction manners, thus leading to the opposite influences on the promotion in 2e- ORR selectivity. As a consequence, the PEM electrolyzer integrated with the optimized catalyst can continuously and stably produce the high-concentration of ca. 7 wt % pure H2O2 aqueous solution at 400 mA cm-2 over 200 h with a cell voltage as low as ca. 2.1 V, suggesting the application potential in industrial-scale H2O2 electrosynthesis.

Recycling Spent Ternary Cathodes to Oxygen Evolution Catalysts for Pure Water Anion-Exchange Membrane Electrolysis

Recycling spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) to efficient water-splitting electrocatalysts is a promising and sustainable technology route for green hydrogen production by renewables. In this work, a fluorinated ternary metal oxide (F-TMO) derived from spent LIBs was successfully converted to a robust water oxidation catalyst for pure water electrolysis by utilizing an anion-exchange membrane. The optimized catalyst delivered a high current density of 3.0 A cm-2 at only 2.56 V and a durability of >300 h at 0.5 A cm-2, surpassing the noble-metal IrO2 catalyst. Such excellent performance benefits from an artificially endowed interface layer on the F-TMO, which renders the exposure of active metal (oxy)hydroxide sites with a stabilized configuration during pure water operation. Compared to other metal oxides (i.e., NiO, Co3O4, MnO2), F-TMO possesses a higher stability number of 2.4 × 106, indicating its strong potential for industrial applications. This work provides a feasible way of recycling waste LIBs to valuable electrocatalysts.

Lignin-assisted electronic modulation on NiSe/FeOx heterointerface for boosting electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction

The development of productive and durable non-precious metal catalysts for the sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is critical for water splitting. Herein, a novel NiSe-FeOx heterojunction encapsulated in lignin-derived carbon layer (NiSe-FeOx@LC) was synthesized via hydrothermal self-assembly and in-situ pyrolysis. NiSe-FeOx@LC exhibited excellent OER performance with an overpotential of 265 mV at 50 mA·cm-2, a Tafel slope of 83 mV·dec-1, as well as long-term stability. Both experimental and DFT calculation results indicated that the doping of FeOx into NiSe@LC successfully optimized the dual interface structure between NiSe and FeOx, thereby promoted the d-bands orbital hybridization, that facilitated electron transfer. Besides, the carbon coating effectively protected the NiSe-FeOx components from leaching and agglomerating during the reaction. This study provides insight into the significance of lignin-derived carbon-encapsulated metallic catalyst for electrocatalytic OER process.

Precisely Constructing Orbital-Coupled Fe─Co Dual-atom Sites for High-Energy-Efficiency Zn-Air/Iodide Hybrid Batteries

Rechargeable Zn-air batteries (ZABs) are promising for energy storage and conversion. However, the high charging voltage and low energy efficiency hinder their commercialization. Herein, these challenges are addressed by employing precisely constructed multifunctional Fe-Co diatomic site catalysts (FeCo-DACs) and integrating iodide/iodate redox into ZABs to create Zinc-air/iodide hybrid batteries (ZAIHBs) with highly efficient multifunctional catalyst. The strong coupling between the 3d orbitals of Fe and Co weakens the excessively strong binding strength between active sites and intermediates, enhancing the catalytic activities for oxygen reduction/evolution reaction and iodide/iodate redox. Consequently, FeCo-DACs exhibit outstanding bifunctional oxygen catalytic activity with a small potential gap (ΔE = 0.66 V) and outstanding stability. Moreover, an outstanding catalytic performance toward iodide/iodate redox is obtained. Therefore, FeCo-DAC-based ZAIHBs exhibit high energy efficiency of up to 75% at 10 mA cm-2 and excellent cycling stability (72% after 500 h). This research offers critical insights into the rational design of DACs and paves the way for high-energy efficiency energy storage devices.

Inducing Intermolecular Oxygen Coupling by Introducing S and FeOOH on Co(OH)2 Nanoneedle Arrays for Industrial Water Oxidation

The design of electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) remains a limitation of industrial hydrogen production by electrolysis of water. Excellent and stable OER catalysts can be developed by activating lattice oxygen and changing the reaction path. Herein, S and FeOOH on the Co(OH)2 nanoneedle arrays are introduced to construct a heterostructure (S-FeOOH/Co(OH)2/NF) as a proof of concept. Theoretical calculations and experimental suggest that the Co-O-Fe motif formed at the heterogeneous interface with the introduction of FeOOH, inducing electron transfer from Co to Fe, enhancing Co─O covalency and reducing intramolecular charge transfer energy, thereby stimulating direct intramolecular lattice oxygen coupling. Doping of S in FeOOH further accelerates electron transfer, improves lattice oxygen activity, and prevents dissolution of FeOOH. Consequently, the overpotential of S-FeOOH/Co(OH)2/NF is only 199 mV at 10 mA cm-2, and coupled with the Pt/C electrode can be up to 1 A cm-2 under 1.79 V and remain stable for over 120 h in an anion exchange membrane water electrolyzer (AEMWE). This work proposes a strategy for the design of efficient and stable electrocatalysts for industrial water electrolysis and promotes the commercialization of AEMWE.

Crystal Facets-Activity Correlation for Oxygen Evolution Reaction in Compositional Complex Alloys

Compositional complex alloys, including high and medium-entropy alloys (HEAs/MEAs) have displayed significant potential as efficient electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), but their structure-activity relationship remains unclear. In particular, the basic question of which crystal facets are more active, especially considering the surface reconstructions, has yet to be answered. This study demonstrates that the lowest index {100} facets of FeCoNiCr MEAs exhibit the highest activity. The underlying mechanism associated with the {100} facet's low in-plane density, making it easier to surface reconstruction and form amorphous structures containing the true active species is uncovered. These results are validated by experiments on single crystals and polycrystal MEAs, as well as DFT calculations. The discoveries contribute to a fundamental comprehension of MEAs in electrocatalysis and offer physics-based strategies for developing electrocatalysts.

In Situ Hydroxide Growth over Nickel-Iron Phosphide with Enhanced Overall Water Splitting Performances

In this work, three dimensional (3D) self-supported Ni-FeOH@Ni-FeP needle arrays with core-shell heterojunction structure are fabricated via in situ hydroxide growth over Ni-FeP surface. The as-prepared electrodes show an outstanding oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance, only requiring the low overpotential of 232 mV to reach 200 mA cm-2 with the Tafel slop of 40 mV dec-1. For overall water splitting, an alkaline electrolyzer with these electrodes only requires a cell voltage of 2.14 V to reach 1 A cm-2. Mechanistic investigations for such excellent electrocatalytic performances are utilized by in situ Raman spectroscopy in conjunction with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The computation results present that Ni-FeOH@Ni-FeP attains better intrinsic conductivity and the D-band center (close to that of the ideal catalyst), thus giving superior excellent catalytic performances. Likewise, the surface Ni-FeOH layer can improve the structural stability of Ni-FeP cores and attenuate the eventual formation of irreversible FeOOH products. More importantly, the appearance of FeOOH intermediates can effectively decrease the energy barrier of NiOOH intermediates, and then rapidly accelerate the sluggish reaction dynamics, as well as further enhance the electrocatalytic activities, reversibility and cycling stability.

A Dual-Cation Exchange Membrane Electrolyzer for Continuous H2 Production from Seawater

Direct seawater splitting (DSS) offers an aspirational route toward green hydrogen (H2) production but remains challenging when operating in a practically continuous manner, mainly due to the difficulty in establishing the water supply-consumption balance under the interference from impurity ions. A DSS system is reported for continuous ampere-level H2 production by coupling a dual-cation exchange membrane (CEM) three-compartment architecture with a circulatory electrolyte design. Monovalent-selective CEMs decouple the transmembrane water migration from interferences of Mg2+, Ca2+, and Cl- ions while maintaining ionic neutrality during electrolysis; the self-loop concentrated alkaline electrolyte ensures the constant gradient of water chemical potential, allowing a specific water supply-consumption balance relationship in a seawater-electrolyte-H2 sequence to be built among an expanded current range. Even paired with commercialized Ni foams, this electrolyzer (model size: 2 × 2 cm2) continuously produces H2 from flowing seawater with a rate of 7.5 mL min-1 at an industrially relevant current of 1.0 A over 100 h. More importantly, the energy consumption can be further reduced by coupling more efficient NiMo/NiFe foams (≈6.2 kWh Nm-3 H2 at 1.0 A), demonstrating the potential to further optimize the continuous DSS electrolyzer for practical applications.

Electronic Modulation in Cu Doped NiCo LDH/NiCo Heterostructure for Highly Efficient Overall Water Splitting

Layered double hydroxides (LDHs), promising bifunctional electrocatalysts for overall water splitting, are hindered by their poor conductivity and sluggish electrochemical reaction kinetics. Herein, a hierarchical Cu-doped NiCo LDH/NiCo alloy heterostructure with rich oxygen vacancies by electronic modulation is tactfully designed. It extraordinarily effectively drives both the oxygen evolution reaction (151 mV@10 mA cm-2) and the hydrogen evolution reaction (73 mV@10 mA cm-2) in an alkaline medium. As bifunctional electrodes for overall water splitting, a low cell voltage of 1.51 V at 10 mA cm-2 and remarkable long-term stability for 100 h are achieved. The experimental and theoretical results reveal that Cu doping and NiCo alloy recombination can improve the conductivity and reaction kinetics of NiCo LDH with surface charge redistribution and reduced Gibbs free energy barriers. This work provides a new inspiration for further design and construction of nonprecious metal-based bifunctional electrocatalysts based on electronic structure modulation strategies.

Stabilization of Lattice Oxygen Evolution Reactions in Oxophilic Ce-Mediated Bi/BiCeO1.8H Electrocatalysts for Efficient Anion Exchange Membrane Water Electrolyzers

The lattice oxygen mechanism (LOM) offers an efficient reaction pathway for oxygen evolution reactions (OERs) in energy storage and conversion systems. Owing to the involvement of active lattice oxygen enhancing electrochemical activity, addressing the structural and electrochemical stabilities of LOM materials is crucial. Herein, a heterostructure (Bi/BiCeO1.8H) containing abundant under-coordinated oxygen atoms having oxygen nonbonding states is synthesized by a simple electrochemical deposition method. Given the difference in reduction potentials between Bi and Ce, partially reduced Bi nanoparticles and surrounding under-coordinated oxygen atoms are generated in BiCeO1.8H. It is found that the lattice oxygen can be activated as a reactant of the OER when the valence state of Bi increases to Bi5+, leading to increased metal-oxygen covalency and that the oxophilic Ce3+/4+ redox couple can maintain the Bi nanoparticles and surrounding under-coordinated oxygen atoms by preventing over-oxidation of Bi. The anion exchange membrane water electrolyzer with Bi/BiCeO1.8H exhibits a low cell voltage of 1.79 V even at a high practical current density of 1.0 A cm-2. Furthermore, the cell performance remains significantly stable over 100 h with only a 2.2% increase in the initial cell voltage, demonstrating sustainable lattice oxygen redox.

Field-Effect Enhancement of Non-Faradaic Processes at Interfaces Governs Electrocatalytic Water Splitting Activity

Recognizing the essential factor governing interfacial hydrogen/oxygen evolution reactions (HER/OER) is central to electrocatalytic water-splitting. Traditional strategies aiming at enhancing electrocatalytic activities have mainly focused on manipulating active site valencies or coordination environments. Herein, the role of interfacial adsorption is probed and modulated by the topological construct of the electrocatalyst, a frequently underestimated non-Faradaic mechanism in the dynamics of electrocatalysis. The engineered Co0.75Fe0.25P nanorods, anchored with FeOx clusters, manifest a marked amplification of the surface electric field, thus delivering a substantially improved bifunctional electrocatalytic performance. In alkaline water splitting anion exchange membrane (AEM) electrolyzer, the current density of 1.0 A cm-2 can be achieved at a cell voltage of only 1.73 V for the FeOx@Co0.75Fe0.25P|| FeOx@Co0.75Fe0.25P pairs for 120 h of continuous operation at 1.0 A cm-2. Detailed investigations of electronic structures, combined with valence state and coordination geometry assessments, reveal that the enhancement of catalytic behavior in FeOx@Co0.75Fe0.25P is chiefly attributed to the strengthened adsorptive interactions prompted by the intensified electric field at the surface. The congruent effects observed in FeOx-cluster-decorated Co0.75Fe0.25P nanosheets underscore the ubiquity of this effect. The results put forth a compelling proposition for leveraging interfacial charge densification via deliberate cluster supplementation.

Enhanced stability of boron modified NiFe hydroxide for oxygen evolution reaction

The introduction of non-metal elements including boron has been identified as a significant means to enhance oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance in NiFe-based catalysts. To understand the catalytic activity and stability, recent attention has widened toward the Fe species as a potential contributor, prompting exploration from various perspectives. Here, boron incorporation in NiFe hydroxide achieves significantly enhanced activity and stability compared to the boron-free NiFe hydroxide. The boron inclusion in NiFe hydroxide is found to show exceptionally improved stability from 12 to 100 hours at a high current density (200 mA cm-2). It facilitates the production and redeposition of OER-active, high-valent Fe species in NiFe hydroxide based on the operando Raman, UV-vis, and X-ray absorption spectroscopy analysis. It is proposed that preserving a homogenous distribution of Fe across the boron-containing catalyst surface enhances OER stability, unlike the bare NiFe hydroxide electrocatalyst, which exhibits uneven Fe dissolution, confirmed through elementary mapping analysis. These findings shed light on the potential of anionic regulation to augment the activity of iron, an aspect not previously explored in depth, and thus are expected to aid in designing practical OER electrocatalysts.

Sulfur-Vacancy Engineering Accelerates Rapid Surface Reconstruction in Ni-Co Bimetal Sulfide Nanosheet for Urea Oxidation Electrocatalysis

Developing a highly efficient catalyst for electrocatalytic urea oxidation reaction (UOR) is not only beneficial for the degradation of urea pollutants in wastewater but also provides a benign route for hydrogen production. Herein, a sulfur-vacancy (Sv) engineering is proposed to accelerate the formation of metal (oxy)hydroxide on the surface of Ni-Co bimetal sulfide nanosheet arrays on nickel foam (Sv-CoNiS@NF) for boosting the urea oxidation electrocatalysis. As a result, the obtained Sv-CoNiS@NF demonstrates an outstanding electrocatalytic UOR performance, which requires a low potential of only 1.397 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode to achieve the current density of 100 mA cm-2. The ex situ Raman spectra and density functional theory calculations reveal the key roles of the Sv site and Co9S8 in promoting the electrocatalytic UOR performance. This work provides a new strategy for accelerating the transformation of electrocatalysts to active metallic (oxy)hydroxide for urea electrolysis via engineering the surface vacancies.

Ceria-Optimized Oxygen-Species Exchange in Hierarchical Bimetallic Hydroxide for Electrocatalytic Water Oxidation

The utilization of rare earth elements to regulate the interaction between catalysts and oxygen-containing species holds promising prospects in the field of oxygen electrocatalysis. Through structural engineering and adsorption regulation, it is possible to achieve high-performance catalytic sites with a broken activity-stability tradeoff. Herein, this work fabricates a hierarchical CeO2/NiCo hydroxide for electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER). This material exhibits superior overpotentials and enhanced stability. Multiple potential-dependent experiments reveal that CeO2 promotes oxygen-species exchange, especially OH- ions, between catalyst and environment, thereby optimizing the redox transformation of hydroxide and the adsorption of oxygen-containing intermediates during OER. This is attributed to the reduction in the adsorption energy barrier of Ni to *OH facilitated by CeO2, particularly the near-interfacial Ni sites. The less-damaging adsorbate evolution mechanism and the CeO2 hierarchical shell significantly enhance the structural robustness, leading to exceptional stability. Additionally, the observed "self-healing" phenomenon provides further substantiation for the accelerated oxygen exchange. This work provides a neat strategy for the synthesis of ceria-based complex hollow electrocatalysts, as well as an in-depth insight into the co-catalytic role of CeO2 in terms of oxygen transfer.

Promoted Overall Water Splitting Catalytic Activity and Durability of Ni3Fe Alloy by Designing N-Doped Carbon Encapsulation

Combining an electrochemically stable material onto the surface of a catalyst can improve the durability of a transition metal catalyst, and enable the catalyst to operate stably at high current density. Herein, the contribution of the N-doped carbon shell (NCS) to the electrochemical properties is evaluated by comparing the characteristics of the Ni3Fe@NCS catalyst with the N-doped carbon shell, and the Ni3Fe catalyst. The synthesized Ni3Fe@NCS catalyst has a distinct overpotential difference from the Ni3Fe catalyst (ηOER = 468.8 mV, ηHER = 462.2 mV) at (200 and -200) mA cm-2 in 1 m KOH. In stability test at (10 and -10) mA cm-2, the Ni3Fe@NCS catalyst showed a stability of (95.47 and 99.6)%, while the Ni3Fe catalyst showed a stability of (72.4 and 95.9)%, respectively. In addition, the in situ X-ray Absorption Near Edge Spectroscopy (XANES) results show that redox reaction appeared in the Ni3Fe catalyst by applying voltages of (1.7 and -0.48) V. The decomposition of nickel and iron due to the redox reaction is detected as a high ppm concentration in the Ni3Fe catalyst through Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-OES) analysis. This work presents the strategy and design of a next-generation electrochemical catalyst to improve the electrocatalytic properties and stability.

Interfacial charge transfer in sheet Ni2P-FePx heterojunction to promote the study of electrocatalytic oxygen evolution

The substantial expense associated with catalysts significantly hampers the progress of electrolytic water-based hydrogen production technology. There is an urgent need to find non-precious metal catalysts that are both cost-effective and highly efficient. Here, the porous Ni2P-FePx nanomaterials were successfully prepared by hydrothermal method, nickel foam as the base, iron nitrate solution as the caustic agent and iron source, and finally phosphating at low temperature. The obtained porous Ni2P-FePx nanosheets showed excellent catalytic activity under alkaline PH = 14, and an overpotential of merely 241 mV was required to achieve a current density of 50 mA cm-2. The morphology of the nanosheet can still be flawlessly presented on the screen after 50 h of working at high current density.

Revealing the Orbital Interactions between Dissimilar Metal Sites during Oxygen Reduction Process

A FeCo/DA@NC catalyst with the well-defined FeCoN6 moiety is customized through a novel and ultrafast Joule heating technique. This catalyst demonstrates superior oxygen reduction reaction activity and stability in an alkaline environment. The power density and charge-discharge cycling of znic-air batteries driven by FeCo/DA@NC also surpass those of Pt/C catalyst. The source of the excellent oxygen reduction reaction activity of FeCo/DA@NC originates from the significantly changed charge environment and 3d orbital spin state. These not only improve the bonding strength between active sites and oxygen-containing intermediates, but also provide spare reaction sites for oxygen-containing intermediates. Moreover, various in situ detection techniques reveal that the rate-determining step in the four-electron oxygen reduction reaction is *O2 protonation. This work provides strong support for the precise design and rapid preparation of bimetallic catalysts and opens up new ideas for understanding orbital interactions during oxygen reduction reactions.

Construction active sites in nickel sulfide by dual-doping vanadium/cobalt for highly effective oxygen evolution reaction

Rational design and exploration of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts with exceptional performance are crucial for the advancement of the hydrogen energy economy. In this study, vanadium/cobalt (V/Co) dual-doped nickel sulfide (Ni3S2) nanowires were synthesized on a nickel foam (NF) substrate to overcome the sluggish kinetics typically associated with OER. The resulting catalyst exhibited outstanding electrocatalytic activity towards OER in a 1.0 M KOH electrolyte, with a minimal overpotential of 155 and 263 mV, the current densities of 10 and 100 mA cm-2 can be achieved effortlessly. Importantly, this catalyst demonstrated remarkable stability over extended periods, maintaining its performance for 25 h under constant current density, 55 h under continuously varying current density, and even after undergoing 2000 cycles of cyclic voltammetry (CV), which had surpassed those of most non-noble metal electrocatalysts. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and density functional theory analyses confirmed that the co-doping of Co and V redistributed the electron of Ni, leading to improvements in the d-band center, structural characteristics, and free energy landscapes of adsorbed intermediates. This work presents a novel strategy, based on the connection between electronic structure and catalytic properties, in the design of double-doped catalysts for efficient OER.

Infrared Spectroscopic Observation of Oxo- and Superoxo-Intermediates in the Water Oxidation Cycle of a Molecular Ir Catalyst

Molecular Ir catalysts have emerged as an important class of model catalysts for understanding structure-activity relationships in water oxidation, a reaction that is central to renewable fuel synthesis. Prior efforts have mostly focused on controlling and elucidating the emergence of active species from prepared precursors. However, the development of efficient and stable molecular Ir catalysts also necessitates probing of reaction intermediates. To date, relatively little is known about the key intermediates in the cycles of the molecular Ir catalysts. Herein, we probed the catalytic cycle of a homogeneous Ir catalyst ("blue dimer") at a Au electrode/aqueous electrolyte interface by combining surface-enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy (SEIRAS) with phase-sensitive detection (PSD). Cyclic voltammograms (CVs) from 1.4 to 1.7 VRHE (RHE = reversible hydrogen electrode) give rise to a band at ∼818 cm-1, whereas CVs from 1.4 to ≥1.85 VRHE generate an additional band at ∼1146 cm-1. Isotope labeling experiments indicate that the bands at ∼818 and ∼1146 cm-1 are attributable to oxo (IrV═O) and superoxo (IrIV-OO•) moieties, respectively. This study establishes PSD-SEIRAS as a sensitive tool for probing water oxidation cycles at electrode/electrolyte interfaces and demonstrates that the relative abundance of two key intermediates can be tuned by the thermodynamic driving force of the reaction.

Rapid preparation of high efficiency hydrogen evolution catalyst with hydrophilicity

The electrolytic water method is an outstanding hydrogen production process because of its high stability and no restriction. A low-priced and efficient catalyst for electro-deposition of Ni-Co microspheres and nanoclusters on carbon steel (Ni-Co/CS) has been prepared by the dynamic hydrogen bubble template. In the 6 M KOH solution, Ni-Co/CS only requires an overpotential of 48 mV to provide a current density of 50 mA cm-2. At the same time, it also has a large electrochemically active specific surface area (ECSA) and a hydrophilic surface. In addition, the study about the influence of carbon steel (CS) on Ni-Co coatings and the comparison experiment for different base materials has been completed. The results prove that CS is an excellent base material for hydrogen production. It can help the Ni-Co catalyst to have a stable electrolysis in 6 M KOH for 500 h. The above properties of Ni-Co/CS catalyst make it a new choice of hydrogen production by electrolysis of water in practical applications.

DFT-assisted low-dimensional carbon-based electrocatalysts design and mechanism study: a review

Low-dimensional carbon-based (LDC) materials have attracted extensive research attention in electrocatalysis because of their unique advantages such as structural diversity, low cost, and chemical tolerance. They have been widely used in a broad range of electrochemical reactions to relieve environmental pollution and energy crisis. Typical examples include hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR), and nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR). Traditional "trial and error" strategies greatly slowed down the rational design of electrocatalysts for these important applications. Recent studies show that the combination of density functional theory (DFT) calculations and experimental research is capable of accurately predicting the structures of electrocatalysts, thus revealing the catalytic mechanisms. Herein, current well-recognized collaboration methods of theory and practice are reviewed. The commonly used calculation methods and the basic functionals are briefly summarized. Special attention is paid to descriptors that are widely accepted as a bridge linking the structure and activity and the breakthroughs for high-volume accurate prediction of electrocatalysts. Importantly, correlated multiple descriptors are used to systematically describe the complicated interfacial electrocatalytic processes of LDC catalysts. Furthermore, machine learning and high-throughput simulations are crucial in assisting the discovery of new multiple descriptors and reaction mechanisms. This review will guide the further development of LDC electrocatalysts for extended applications from the aspect of DFT computations.

Unraveling and leveraging in situ surface amorphization for enhanced hydrogen evolution reaction in alkaline media

Surface amorphization provides electrocatalysts with more active sites and flexibility. However, there is still a lack of experimental observations and mechanistic explanations for the in situ amorphization process and its crucial role. Herein, we propose the concept that by in situ reconstructed amorphous surface, metal phosphorus trichalcogenides could intrinsically offer better catalytic performance for the alkaline hydrogen production. Trace Ru (0.81 wt.%) is doped into NiPS3 nanosheets for alkaline hydrogen production. Using in situ electrochemical transmission electron microscopy technique, we confirmed the amorphization process occurred on the edges of NiPS3 is critical for achieving superior activity. Comprehensive characterizations and theoretical calculations reveal Ru primarily stabilized at edges of NiPS3 through in situ formed amorphous layer containing bridging S22- species, which can effectively reduce the reaction energy barrier. This work emphasizes the critical role of in situ formed active layer and suggests its potential for optimizing catalytic activities of electrocatalysts.

Constructing S-deficient nickel sulfide/N-doped carbon interface for improved water splitting activity

Transition-metal sulfides are an intriguing family of electrocatalysts, yet their water-splitting applications are severely hampered by uncontrollable phase reconstruction and unsatisfactory in-service durability. Herein, we developed an efficient method to construct nickel sulfide (NiS) nanoarrays on foam nickel (NF) while being protected by highly N-doped formamide-derived carbon (termed NiS-NC@NF). The NiS nanocrystals were transformed in situ from highly dispersed Ni-N-C deposited on NF, ensuring a strong coupling effect that tunes the surface properties of NiS nanocrystals via the in situ constructed NiS/N-doped carbon interface. Electrochemical measurements reveal that very low overpotentials of 88.0 and 170.0 mV (vs. RHE) are required to achieve a current density of 10.0 mA cm-2 for hydrogen and oxygen evolution, respectively. The highly N-doped carbon matrix additionally regulates the potential-driven reconstruction of NiS in a controlled extent. Remarkably, the water electrolyzer built with NiS-NC@NF as both anode and cathode delivers an extremely low cell voltage of 1.51 V to initiate water splitting in the alkaline medium.

Electrode/Electrolyte Synergy for Concerted Promotion of Electron and Proton Transfers toward Efficient Neutral Water Oxidation

Neutral water oxidation is a crucial half-reaction for various electrochemical applications requiring pH-benign conditions. However, its sluggish kinetics with limited proton and electron transfer rates greatly impacts the overall energy efficiency. In this work, we created an electrode/electrolyte synergy strategy for simultaneously enhancing the proton and electron transfers at the interface toward highly efficient neutral water oxidation. The charge transfer was accelerated between the iridium oxide and in situ formed nickel oxyhydroxide on the electrode end. The proton transfer was expedited by the compact borate environment that originated from hierarchical fluoride/borate anions on the electrolyte end. These concerted promotions facilitated the proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) events. Due to the electrode/electrolyte synergy, Ir-O and Ir-OO- intermediates could be directly detected by in situ Raman spectroscopy, and the rate-limiting step of Ir-O oxidation was determined. This synergy strategy can extend the scope of optimizing electrocatalytic activities toward more electrode/electrolyte combinations.

Unveiling the Oxygen Evolution Mechanism with FeNi (Hydr)oxide under Neutral Conditions

Large-scale solar-driven water splitting is a way to store energy, but it requires the development of practical and durable oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts. The present paper aims to investigate the mechanism of the OER, local pH, high-valent metal ions, limitations, conversions, and details during the OER in the presence of FeNi foam using in situ surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy. This research also explores the use of in situ surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy for detecting species on foam surfaces during the OER. The acidic media around the electrode not only limit the process but also affect the phosphate ion protonation and overall catalysis effectiveness. The study proposes that FeNi hydroxides serve as true catalysts for OER under neutral conditions, rather than FeNi phosphates. However, phosphate species remain crucial for proton transfer and water molecule adsorption. Changes observed in pH at the open-circuit potential suggest new insights concerning the coordination of Ni(II) to phosphate ions under certain conditions. By extrapolating the Tafel plot, the overpotential for the onset of OER was determined to be 470 mV. Furthermore, the overpotentials for current densities of 1 and 5 mA/cm2 were 590 and 790 mV, respectively. These findings offer valuable insights into the advancement of the OER catalysts and our understanding of the underlying mechanism for efficient water splitting; both are crucial elements for the purpose of energy storage.

Highly Efficient Biomass Upgrading by a Ni-Cu Electrocatalyst Featuring Passivation of Water Oxidation Activity

Electricity-driven organo-oxidations have shown an increasing potential recently. However, oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is the primary competitive reaction, especially under high current densities, which leads to low Faradaic efficiency (FE) of the product and catalyst detachment from the electrode. Here, we report a bimetallic Ni-Cu electrocatalyst supported on Ni foam (Ni-Cu/NF) to passivate the OER process while the oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is significantly enhanced. A current density of 1000 mA cm-2 can be achieved at 1.50 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode, and both FE and yield keep close to 100 % over a wide range of potentials. Both experimental results and theoretical calculations reveal that Cu doping impedes the OH* deprotonation to O* and hereby OER process is greatly passivated. Those instructive results provide a new approach to realizing highly efficient biomass upgrading by regulating the OER activity.

Synergistic Activation of Inert Iron Oxide Basal Planes through Heterostructure Formation and Doping for Efficient Hydrogen Evolution

Iron oxides have emerged as a very promising and cost-effective alternative to precious metal catalysts for hydrogen production. However, the inert basal plane of iron oxides needs to be activated to enhance their catalytic efficiency. In this study, we employed heterostructure engineering and doped nickel to cooperatively activate the basal planes of iron oxide (Ni-Fe2 O3 /CeO2 HSs) to achieve high hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity. The Ni-Fe2 O3 /CeO2 HSs electrocatalyst demonstrates excellent basic HER activity and stability, such as an extremely low overpotential of 43 mV at 10 mA cm-2 current density and corresponding Tafel slope of 58.6 mV dec-1 . The increase in electrocatalyst activity and acceleration of hydrogen precipitation kinetics arises from the dual modulation of Ni doping and heterostructure, which not only modulates the electrocatalyst's electronic structure, but also increases the number and exposure of active sites. Remarkably, the generation of heterogeneous structure makes the catalyst se. The Ni-doped catalyst has not only increased HER activity but also low-temperature resistance. These results suggest that the synergistic activation of inert iron oxide basal planes through heterostructure formation and doping is a feasible strategy. Furthermore, for efficient electrocatalytic water splitting, this technique can be extended to other non-noble metal oxides.

Dynamic Changes of an Anodized FeNi Alloy during the Oxygen Evolution Reaction under Alkaline Conditions

An efficient and durable oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalyst is necessary for the water-splitting process toward energy conversion. The OER through water oxidation reactions could provide electrons for H2O, CO2, and N2 reduction and produce valuable compounds. Herein, the FeNi (1:1 Ni/Fe) alloy as foam, after anodizing at 50 V in a two-electrode system in KOH solution (1.0 M), was characterized by Raman spectroscopy, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDX), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-angle annular dark-field imaging (HAADF)-scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and used as an efficient and durable OER electrocatalyst in KOH solution (1.0 M). The overpotential for the onset of the OER based on extrapolation of the Tafel plot was 225 mV. The overpotentials for the current densities of 10 and 30 mA/cm2 are observed at 270 and 290 mV, respectively. In addition, a low Tafel slope is observed, 38.0 mV per decade, for the OER. To investigate the mechanism of the OER, in situ surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy was used to detect FeNi hydroxide and characteristic peaks of H2O. Impurities in KOH can adsorb onto the electrode surface during the OER. Peaks corresponding to Ni(III) (hydr)oxide and FeO42- can be detected during the OER, but high-valent FeNi (hydr)oxides are unstable and reduce under the open circle potential. Metal hydroxide transformations during the OER and anion adsorption should be carefully considered. In addition, Fe3O4 may convert to γ-Fe2O3 during the OER. This study aims to offer logical perspectives on the dynamic changes that occur during the OER under alkaline conditions in an anodized FeNi alloy. These changes encompass variations in morphology, surface oxidation, the generation of high-valent species, and phase conversion during the OER.

Improving the Hydrogen Oxidation Reaction Rate of Ru by Active Hydrogen in the Ultrathin Pd Interlayer

Enhancing the catalytic activity of Ru metal in the hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) potential range, improving the insufficient activity of Ru caused by its oxophilicity, is of great significance for reducing the cost of anion exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs). Here, we use Ru grown on Au@Pd as a model system to understand the underlying mechanism for activity improvement by combining direct in situ surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) evidence of the catalytic reaction intermediate (OH_ad) with in situ X-ray diffraction (XRD), electrochemical characterization, as well as DFT calculations. The results showed that the Au@Pd@Ru nanocatalyst utilizes the hydrogen storage capacity of the Pd interlayer to "temporarily" store the activated hydrogen enriched at the interface, which spontaneously overflows at the "hydrogen-deficient interface" to react with OH_ad adsorbed on Ru. It is the essential reason for the enhanced catalytic activity of Ru at anodic potential. This work deepens our understanding of the HOR mechanism and provides new ideas for the rational design of advanced electrocatalysts.

In-situ Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy Reveals a Mars-van Krevelen-Type Gas Sensing Mechanism in Au@SnO2 Nanoparticle-Based Chemiresistors

Molecular-level understandings of gas sensing mechanisms of oxide-based chemiresistors are significant for designing high-performance gas sensors; however, the mechanisms are still controversial due to the lack of direct experimental evidence. This work demonstrates efficient in situ surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) tracing of the highly representative SnO₂-ethanol gas sensing using Au@SnO₂ nanoparticles (NPs), where the Au core and SnO₂ shell provide SERS activity and a gas sensing response, respectively. The in situ SERS evidence suggests that the sensing follows a Mars-van Krevelen mechanism rather than the prevailing adsorbed oxygen (AO) model. This mechanism is also observed in sensing other gases based on the Au@SnO₂ NPs, showing its universality. This work offers efficient in situ tracing for gas sensing and experimental elucidation of the specific gas sensing mechanism, potentially ending the long-term controversy over the gas sensing mechanisms. Therefore, it is highly significant to this field.

Introducing non-bridging ligand in metal-organic framework-based electrocatalyst enabling reinforced oxygen evolution in seawater

Using seawater as the replacement of freshwater for electrolysis, with the integration of renewable energy, is deemed as an attractive manner to harvest green hydrogen. However, the complexity of seawater puts forward stricter requirement to the electrocatalyst to alleviate the chlorine electrochemistry and corrosion. Herein, a nanosheet array of NiFe-MOF@Ni₂P/Ni(OH)₂ is devised by partially substituting terephthalic acid (H₂BDC) ligand by ferrocenecarboxylic acid (FcCA). Tailoring the active site into an under-coordinated fashion affords NiFe-MOF@Ni₂P/Ni(OH)₂ excellent performance towards oxygen evolution reaction (OER), only requiring the overpotentials of 302 mV and 394 mV in alkaline seawater to drive the current densities of 100 and 1000 mA cm^-2, respectively. Moreover, the as-obtained electrocatalyst showed robust durability for operating more than 120 h at 500 mA cm^-2 under harsh condition (6 M KOH + 1.5 M NaCl, 60 ℃). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirmed that tuning the coordination environment of Ni in NiFe-MOF by incorporating the non-bridging FcCA ligands could boost the formation of more active catalytic sites, which can simultaneously enhance the electronic conductivity and accelerate OER kinetics. This work provides beneficial enlightenment of combining MOF-based electrocatalyst with direct electrolysis of seawater.

Understanding the sulphur-oxygen exchange process of metal sulphides prior to oxygen evolution reaction

Dynamic reconstruction of metal sulphides during electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) has hampered the acquisition of legible evidence for comprehensively understanding the phase-transition mechanism and electrocatalytic activity origin. Herein, modelling on a series of cobalt-nickel bimetallic sulphides, we for the first time establish an explicit and comprehensive picture of their dynamic phase evaluation pathway at the pre-catalytic stage before OER process. By utilizing the in-situ electrochemical transmission electron microscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy, the lattice sulphur atoms of (NiCo)S_1.33 particles are revealed to be partially substituted by oxygen from electrolyte to form a lattice oxygen-sulphur coexisting shell surface before the generation of reconstituted active species. Such S-O exchange process is benefitted from the subtle modulation of metal-sulphur coordination form caused by the specific Ni and Co occupation. This unique oxygen-substitution behaviour produces an (NiCo)O_xS_1.33-x surface to reduce the energy barrier of surface reconstruction for converting sulphides into active oxy/hydroxide derivative, therefore significantly increasing the proportion of lattice oxygen-mediated mechanism compared to the pure sulphide surface. We anticipate this direct observation can provide an explicit picture of catalysts' structural and compositional evolution during the electrocatalytic process.

Regulating the reaction pathway of nZVI to improve the decontamination performance through magnetic spatial confinement effect

Nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) shows high effectiveness in the catalyzed removal of contaminants in wastewater treatment. However, the uncontrolled interfacial electron transfer behavior and formation of surface iron oxide (FeOx) layer led to severe electron wasting and occasionally form highly toxic intermediates. Here, we constructed magnetic mesoporous SiO₂ shell on surface of nZVI to stimulate a magnetic spatial confinement effect and regulate the electron transfer pattern. Therein, Fe atom facilely spread out from the nZVI core, orderly release electron to surface adsorbed H₂O molecule, which is efficiently transformed into active hydrogen (H*). Meanwhile, in-situ Raman revealed that Fe atoms were involved in the formation of penetrable γ-FeOOH rather than FeOx layer, enabling the continuous inward diffusion of H₂O and outward diffusion of H* . Employing the catalyzed removal of halogenated phenols as demo reaction, the presence of magnetic mesoporous SiO₂ shell utilized the reaction between electrons and H₂O to switch the reaction pathway from the reduction/oxidation hybrid process to hydrodehalogantion, and increased the conversion of halogenated phenols-to-phenols by 5.53 times. This study shows the forehand of improving the decontamination performance of nZVI through sophisticated designed surface coating, as well as fine regulating the environmental behavior of magnetic material via micro-magnetic field.

Evolution of Carbonate-Intercalated γ-NiOOH from a Molecularly Derived Nickel Sulfide (Pre)Catalyst for Efficient Water and Selective Organic Oxidation

The development of a competent (pre)catalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) to produce green hydrogen is critical for a carbon-neutral economy. In this aspect, the low-temperature, single-source precursor (SSP) method allows the formation of highly efficient OER electrocatalysts, with better control over their structural and electronic properties. Herein, a transition metal (TM) based chalcogenide material, nickel sulfide (NiS), is prepared from a novel molecular complex [Ni^II (PyHS)₄ ][OTf]₂ (1) and utilized as a (pre)catalyst for OER. The NiS (pre)catalyst requires an overpotential of only 255 mV to reach the benchmark current density of 10 mA cm^-2 and shows 63 h of chronopotentiometry (CP) stability along with over 95% Faradaic efficiency in 1 m KOH. Several ex situ measurements and quasi in situ Raman spectroscopy uncover that NiS irreversibly transformed to a carbonate-intercalated γ-NiOOH phase under the alkaline OER conditions, which serves as the actual active structure for the OER. Additionally, this in situ formed active phase successfully catalyzes the selective oxidation of alcohol, aldehyde, and amine-based organic substrates to value-added chemicals, with high efficiencies.

Self-Terminating Surface Reconstruction Induced by High-Index Facets of Delafossite for Accelerating Ammonia Oxidation Reaction Involving Lattice Oxygen

Ammonia (NH₃ ) is a promising hydrogen (H₂ ) carrier for future carbon-free energy systems, due to its high hydrogen content and easiness to be liquefied. Inexpensive and efficient catalysts for ammonia electro-oxidation reaction (AOR) are desired in whole ammonia-based energy systems. In this work, ultrasmall delafossite (CuFeO₂ ) polyhedrons with exposed high-index facets are prepared by a one-step NH₃ -assisted hydrothermal method, serving as AOR pre-catalysts. The high-index CuFeO₂ facet is revealed to facilitate surface reconstruction into active Cu-doped FeOOH nanolayers during AOR processes in ammonia alkaline solutions, which is driven by the favorable Cu leaching and terminates as the 2p levels of internal lattice oxygen change. The reconstructed heterostructures of CuFeO₂ and Cu-doped FeOOH effectively activate the dehydrogenation steps of NH₃ and exhibit a potential improvement of 260 mV for electrocatalytic AOR at 10 mA cm^-2 compared to the pre-restructured phase. Further, density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirm that a lower energy barrier of the rate-determining step (*NH₃ to *NH₂ ) is presented on high-index CuFeO₂ facets covered with Cu-doped FeOOH nanolayers. Innovatively, lattice oxygen atoms in Fe-based oxides and oxyhydroxide are involved in the dehydrogenation steps of AOR as a proton acceptor, broadening the horizons for rational designs of AOR catalysts.

Oxygen Evolution/Reduction Reaction Catalysts: From In Situ Monitoring and Reaction Mechanisms to Rational Design

The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) are core steps of various energy conversion and storage systems. However, their sluggish reaction kinetics, i.e., the demanding multielectron transfer processes, still render OER/ORR catalysts less efficient for practical applications. Moreover, the complexity of the catalyst-electrolyte interface makes a comprehensive understanding of the intrinsic OER/ORR mechanisms challenging. Fortunately, recent advances of in situ/operando characterization techniques have facilitated the kinetic monitoring of catalysts under reaction conditions. Here we provide selected highlights of recent in situ/operando mechanistic studies of OER/ORR catalysts with the main emphasis placed on heterogeneous systems (primarily discussing first-row transition metals which operate under basic conditions), followed by a brief outlook on molecular catalysts. Key sections in this review are focused on determination of the true active species, identification of the active sites, and monitoring of the reactive intermediates. For in-depth insights into the above factors, a short overview of the metrics for accurate characterizations of OER/ORR catalysts is provided. A combination of the obtained time-resolved reaction information and reliable activity data will then guide the rational design of new catalysts. Strategies such as optimizing the restructuring process as well as overcoming the adsorption-energy scaling relations will be discussed. Finally, pending current challenges and prospects toward the understanding and development of efficient heterogeneous catalysts and selected homogeneous catalysts are presented.

Formation and Stabilization of NiOOH by Introducing α-FeOOH in LDH: Composite Electrocatalyst for Oxygen Evolution and Urea Oxidation Reactions

NiOOH is considered as the most active intermediate during electrochemical oxidation reaction, however, it is hard to directly synthesize due to high oxidation energy. Herein, theoretical calculations predict that α-FeOOH enables a decline in formation energy and an improvement in stabilization of NiOOH in NiFe-based layered double hydroxide (LDH). Inspiringly, a composite composed of α-FeOOH and LDH is well-designed and successfully fabricated in hydrothermal treatment by adding extra Fe³⁺ resource, and stable NiOOH is obtained by the following electro-oxidation method. Benefiting from strong electron-capturing capability of α-FeOOH, it efficiently promotes charge redistribution around the Ni/Fe sites and activates Ni atoms of LDH, verified by X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) and X-ray absorption spectra (XAS). The d-band center is optimized that balances the absorption and desorption energy, and thus Gibbs free energy barrier is lowered dramatically toward oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and urea oxidation reaction (UOR), and finally showing an outstanding overpotential of 195 mV and a potential of 1.35 V at 10 mA cm^-2 , respectively. This study provides a novel strategy to construct highly efficient catalysts via the introduction of a new phase for complex multiple-electron reactions.

Interfacial Evolution on Co-based Oxygen Evolution Reaction Electrocatalysts Probed by Using In Situ Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy

Disclosing the roles of reactive sites at catalytic interfaces is of paramount importance for understanding the reaction mechanism. However, due to the difficulties in the detection of reaction intermediates in the complex heterophase reaction system, disentangling the highly convolved roles of different surface atoms remains challenging. Herein, we used CoO_x as a model catalyst to study the synergy of Co_Td²⁺ and Co_Oh³⁺ active sites in the electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The formation and evolution of reaction intermediates on the catalyst surface during the OER process were investigated by in situ surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). According to the SERS results in ion-substitution experiments, Co_Oh³⁺ is the catalytic site for the conversion of OH^- to O-O^- intermediate species (1140-1180 cm^-1). CoOOH (503 cm^-1) and CoO₂ (560 cm^-1) active centers generated during the OER, at the original Co_Td²⁺ sites of CoO_x, eventually serve as the O₂ release sites (conversion of O-O^- intermediate to O₂). The mechanism was further confirmed on Co²⁺-Co³⁺ layered double hydroxides (LDHs), where an optimal ratio of 1:1.2 (Co²⁺/Co³⁺) is required to balance O-O^- generation and O₂ release. This work highlights the synergistic role of metal atoms at different valence statuses in water oxidation and sheds light on surface component engineering for the rational design of high-performance heterogeneous catalysts.

An Electrochromic Nickel Phosphate Film for Large-Area Smart Window with Ultra-Large Optical Modulation

Exploring materials with high electrochemical activity is of keen interest for electrochemistry-controlled optical and energy storage devices. However, it remains a great challenge for transition metal oxides to meet this feature due to their low electron conductivity and insufficient reaction sites. Here, we propose a type of transition metal phosphate (NiHPO4·3H2O, NHP) by a facile and scalable electrodeposition method, which can achieve the capability of efficient ion accommodation and injection/extraction for electrochromic energy storage applications. Specifically, the NHP film with an ultra-high transmittance (approach to 100%) achieves a large optical modulation (90.8% at 500 nm), high coloration efficiency (75.4 cm2 C-1 at 500 nm), and a high specific capacity of 47.8 mAh g-1 at 0.4 A g-1. Furthermore, the transformation mechanism of NHP upon electrochemical reaction is systematically elucidated using in situ and ex situ techniques. Ultimately, a large-area electrochromic smart window with 100 cm2 is constructed based on the NHP electrode, displaying superior electrochromic energy storage performance in regulating natural light and storing electrical charges. Our findings may open up new strategies for developing advanced electrochromic energy storage materials and smart windows.

Investigation of the Plasmon-Activated C-C Coupling Reactions by Liquid-State SERS Measurement

The implementation of plasmonic materials in heterogeneous catalysis was limited due to the lack of experimental access in managing the plasmonic hot carriers. Herein, we propose a liquid-state surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) technique to manipulate and visualize heterogeneous photocatalysis with transparent plasmonic chips. The liquid-state measurement conquers the difficulties that arise from the plasmon-induced thermal effects, and thus the plasmon based strategies can be extended to investigate a wider range of catalytic reactions. We demonstrated the selection of reaction products by modulating the plasmonic hot carriers and explored the mechanisms in several typical C-C coupling reactions with 4-bromothiophenol (4-BTP) as reactants. The real-time experimental results suggest brand new mechanisms of the formation of C-C bonds on plasmonic metal nanoparticles (NPs): the residue of 4-BTP, but not thiophenol (TP), is responsible for the C-C coupling. Furthermore, this technique was extended to study the evolution of the Suzuki-Miyaura reaction on nonplasmonic palladium metals by establishing the charge transfer channels between palladium and Au NPs. The cleavage and formation of chemical bonds in each individual reaction step were discerned, and the corresponding working mechanisms were clarified.

Electrochemical activation-induced surface-reconstruction of NiOx microbelt superstructure of core-shell nanoparticles for superior durability electrocatalysis

The tailoring of intrinsic electronic structures and extrinsic hierarchical morphologies is widely recognized as a promising strategy to enhance the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance of electrocatalysts. It is generally accepted that the surface of the transition metal-based electrocatalyst exposed to the alkaline electrolyte is highly oxidized and reconstructed, forming an amorphous layer during the electrochemical process. This amorphous active phase is favorable for OER due to its abundant dangling bonds, vacancies and defects, which is tricky to be rationally prepared by conventional methods. Herein, a facile access to crystalline / amorphous NiO_x microbelt superstructure of core-shell nanoparticles is presented, which is assembled of crystalline NiO nanoparticles coated with amorphous Ni³⁺/Ni²⁺ oxide layer. Electrochemical activation induces the in-situ surface reconstruction of the NiO_x microbelt superstructure, resulting in a thicker outer amorphous Ni³⁺/Ni²⁺ layer further facilitating OER. Owing to the optimization of the in-situ surface reconstruction, the NiO_x microbelt superstructure with crystalline / amorphous dual phases exhibited both high electrocatalytic activity and superior durability for OER, with the original microbelt superstructure retained after 50000 s I-t test.
