Theory-Guided Regulation of FeN4 Spin State by Neighboring Cu Atoms for Enhanced Oxygen Reduction Electrocatalysis in Flexible Metal-Air Batteries

Sulfur doping-induced morphological and electronic structure modification of polyoxometalate FeWO4 for enhanced removal of organic pollutants from water

Wolframite (FeWO4), a typical polyoxometalate, serves as an auspicious candidate for heterogeneous catalysts, courtesy of its high chemical stability and electronic properties. However, the electron-deficient surface-active Fe species in FeWO4 are insufficient to cleave H2O2 via Fe redox-mediated Fenton-like catalytic reaction. Herein, we doped Sulfur (S) atom into FeWO4 catalysts to refine the electronic structure of FeWO4 for H2O2 activation and sulfamethoxazole (SMX) degradation. Furthermore, spin-state reconstruction on S-doped FeWO4 was found to effectively refine the electronic structure of Fe in the d orbital, thereby enhancing H2O2 activation. S doping also accelerated electron transfer during the conversion of sulfur species, promoting the cycling of Fe(III) to Fe(II). Consequently, S-doped FeWO4 bolstered the Fenton-like reaction by nearly two orders of magnitude compared to FeWO4. Significantly, the developed S-doped FeWO4 exhibited a remarkable removal efficiency of approximately 100% for SMX within 40 min in real water samples. This underscores its extensive pH adaptability, robust catalytic stability, and leaching resistance. The matrix effects of water constituents on the performance of S-doped FeWO4 were also investigated, and the results showed that a certain amount of Cl-, SO42-, NO3-, HCO3- and PO43- exhibited negligible effects on the degradation of SMX. Theoretical calculations corroborate that the distinctive spin-state reconstruction of Fe center in S-doped FeWO4 is advantageous for H2O2 decomposition. This discovery offers novel mechanistic insight into the enhanced catalytic activity of S doping in Fenton-like reactions and paves the way for expanding the application of FeWO4 in wastewater treatment.

Hf and Co Dual Single Atoms Co-Doped Carbon Catalyst Enhance the Oxygen Reduction Performance

Single-atom metal-doped M-N-C (M═Fe, Co, Mn, or Ni) catalysts exhibit excellent catalytic activity toward oxygen reduction reactions (ORR). However, their performance still has a large gap considering the demand for their practical applications. This study reports a high-performance dual single-atom doped carbon catalyst (HfCo-N-C), which is prepared by pyrolyzing Co and Hf co-doped ZIF-8 . Co and Hf are atomically dispersed in the carbon framework and coordinated with N to form Co-N4 and Hf-N4 active moieties. The synergetic effect between Co-N4 and Hf-N4 significantly enhance the catalytic activity and durability of the catalyst. In an acidic medium, the ORR half-wave potential (E1/2) of the catalyst is up to 0.82 V , which is much higher than that of the Co-N-C catalyst without Hf co-doping (0.80 V). The kinetic current density of the catalyst is up to 2.49 A cm-2 at 0.85 V , which is 1.74 times that of the Co-N-C catalyst without Hf co-doping. Moreover, the catalyst exhibits excellent cathodic performance in single proton exchange membrane fuel cells and Zn-air batteries. Furthermore, Hf co-doping can effectively suppress the formation of H2O2, resulting in significantly improved stability and durability.

Electronic Spin Alignment within Homologous NiS2/NiSe2 Heterostructures to Promote Sulfur Redox Kinetics in Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

The catalytic activation of the Li-S reaction is fundamental to maximize the capacity and stability of Li-S batteries (LSBs). Current research on Li-S catalysts mainly focuses on optimizing the energy levels to promote adsorption and catalytic conversion, while frequently overlooking the electronic spin state influence on charge transfer and orbital interactions. Here, hollow NiS2/NiSe2 heterostructures encapsulated in a nitrogen-doped carbon matrix (NiS2/NiSe2@NC) are synthesized and used as a catalytic additive in sulfur cathodes. The NiS2/NiSe2 heterostructure promotes the spin splitting of the 3d orbital, driving the Ni3+ transformation from low to high spin. This high spin configuration raises the electronic energy level and activates the electronic state. This accelerates the charge transfer and optimizes the adsorption energy, lowering the reaction energy barrier of the polysulfides conversion. Benefiting from these characteristics, LSBs based on NiS2/NiSe2@NC/S cathodes exhibit high initial capacity (1458 mAh·g⁻1 at 0.1C), excellent rate capability (572 mAh·g⁻1 at 5C), and stable cycling with an average capacity decay rate of only 0.025% per cycle at 1C during 500 cycles. Even at high sulfur loadings (6.2 mg·cm⁻2), high initial capacities of 1173 mAh·g⁻1 (7.27 mAh·cm⁻2) are measured at 0.1C, and 1058 mAh·g⁻1 is retained after 300 cycles.

Aluminum-air batteries: current advances and promises with future directions

Owing to their attractive energy density of about 8.1 kW h kg-1 and specific capacity of about 2.9 A h g-1, aluminum-air (Al-air) batteries have become the focus of research. Al-air batteries offer significant advantages in terms of high energy and power density, which can be applied in electric vehicles; however, there are limitations in their design and aluminum corrosion is a main bottleneck. Herein, we aim to provide a detailed overview of Al-air batteries and their reaction mechanism and electrochemical characteristics. This review emphasizes each component/sub-component including the anode, electrolyte, and air cathode together with strategies to modify the electrolyte, air-cathode, and even anode for enhanced performance. The latest advancements focusing on the specific design of Al-air batteries and their rechargeability characteristics are discussed. Finally, the constraints and prospects of their use in mobility applications are also covered in depth. Thus, the present review may pave the way for researchers and developers working in energy storage solutions to look beyond lithium/sodium ion-based storage solutions.

Atomically Dispersed p-Block Aluminum-Based Catalysts for Oxygen Reduction Reaction

The main group metals are commonly perceived as catalytically inert in the context of oxygen reduction reactions (ORR) due to the delocalized valence orbitals. Regulating the local environment and structure of metal center coordinated by nitrogen ligands (M-Nx) is a promising approach to accelerate catalytic dynamics. Herein, we, for the first time, report the atomically dispersed Al catalysts coordinated with N and C atoms for 4-electron ORR. The axial coordinated pyrrolyl N group (No) is constructed in the Al-N4-No moiety to regulate the p-band structure of Al center, effectively steering the local environment and structure of the square planar Al-N4 sites, which typically exhibit too strong interaction with ORR intermediates. The dynamic covalency competition of axial Al-No and Al-O bonding could endow the Al center with moderate hybridization between Al 3p orbital and O 2p orbital, alleviating the binding energy of ORR intermediates. The as-prepared Al-N4-No electrocatalyst exhibits excellent ORR activity, selectivity, and durability, along with the rapid kinetics as demonstrated by in situ Raman spectroscopy. This work offers a fundamental comprehension of the fine regulation on p-band and guides the rational design of main-group metal-based single atom catalysts.

Structural Defect-Enabled Magnetic Neutrality Nanoprobes for Ultra-High-Field Magnetic Resonance Imaging of Isolated Tumor Cells in Vivo

The identification of metastasis "seeds," isolated tumor cells (ITCs), is of paramount importance for the prognosis and tailored treatment of metastatic diseases. The conventional approach to clinical ITCs diagnosis through invasive biopsies is encumbered by the inherent risks of overdiagnosis and overtreatment. This underscores the pressing need for noninvasive ITCs detection methods that provide histopathological-level insights. Recent advancements in ultra-high-field (UHF) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) have ignited hope for the revelation of minute lesions, including the elusive ITCs. Nevertheless, currently available MRI contrast agents are susceptible to magnetization-induced strong T2-decaying effects under UHF conditions, which compromises T1 MRI capability and further impedes the precise imaging of small lesions. Herein, this study reports a structural defect-enabled magnetic neutrality nanoprobe (MNN) distinguished by its paramagnetic properties featuring an exceptionally low magnetic susceptibility through atomic modulation, rendering it almost nonmagnetic. This unique characteristic effectively mitigates T2-decaying effect while concurrently enhancing UHF T1 contrast. Under 9 T MRI, the MNN demonstrates an unprecedentedly low r2/r1 value (≈1.06), enabling noninvasive visualization of ITCs with an exceptional detection threshold of ≈0.16 mm. These high-performance MNNs unveil the domain of hitherto undetectable minute lesions, representing a significant advancement in UHF-MRI for diagnostic purposes and fostering comprehensive metastasis research.

Pd Clusters Loaded with Multivalent Cu Foam for Superior Electrochemical Nitrate Reduction and Selective N≡N Bond Formation

The electrochemical denitrification of nitrate (NO3 -) in actual wastewater to nitrogen (N2) is an effective approach to reversing the current imbalance of the nitrogen cycle and the eutrophication of water. However, electrostatic repulsion between NO3 - and the cathode results in the low efficiency of NO3 - reduction reaction (NO3RR). Here, density functional theory (DFT) calculations are used as a theoretical guide to design a Pd cluster-loaded multivalent Cu foam (Pd/Cu2O-CF) electrocatalyst, which achieves a splendid 97.8% NO3 - removal rate, 97.9% N2 selectivity, 695.5 mg N g-1 Pd h-1 reduction efficiency, and 60.0% Faradaic efficiency at -1.3 V versus SCE. The projected density of states (pDOS) indicates that NO3 - and Pd/Cu2O-CF are bonded via strong complexation between the O 2p (in NO3 -) and Cu 3d (in Cu2O) with the input of voltage, which reduces the electrostatic repulsion and enhances the enrichment of NO3 - on the cathode. In-situ characterizations demonstrate that Pd[H] can reduce Cu2O to Cu, and subsequently Cu reduces NO3 - to nitrite (NO2 -) accompanied by in situ reconfiguration of multivalent Cu foam. NO2 - is then transferred to the surface of Pd clusters by the cascade catalysis and accelerates the breaking of N─O bonds to form Pd─N, and eventually achieves the N≡N bond formation.

Engineering Spin Polarization of the Surface-Adsorbed Fe Atom by Intercalating a Transition Metal Atom into the MoS2 Bilayer for Enhanced Nitrogen Reduction

The precise control of spin states in transition metal (TM)-based single-atom catalysts (SACs) is crucial for advancing the functionality of electrocatalysts, yet it presents significant scientific challenges. Using density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we propose a novel mechanism to precisely modulate the spin state of the surface-adsorbed Fe atom on the MoS2 bilayer. This is achieved by strategically intercalating a TM atom into the interlayer space of the MoS2 bilayer. Our results show that these strategically intercalated TM atoms can induce a substantial interfacial charge polarization, thereby effectively controlling the charge transfer and spin polarization on the surface Fe site. In particular, by varying the identity of the intercalated TM atoms and their vacancy filling site, a continuous modulation of the spin states of the surface Fe site from low to medium to high can be achieved, which can be accurately described using descriptors composed of readily accessible intrinsic properties of materials. Using the electrochemical dinitrogen reduction reaction (eNRR) as a prototypical reaction, we discovered a universal volcano-like relation between the tuned spin and the catalytic activity of Fe-based SACs. This finding contrasts with the linear scaling relationships commonly seen in traditional studies and offers a robust new approach to modulating the activity of SACs through interfacial engineering.

P-Bridging Asymmetry Diatomic Catalysts Sites Drive Efficient Bifunctional Oxygen Electrocatalysis for Zinc-Air Batteries

Rechargeable zinc-air batteries (ZABs) rely on the development of high-performance bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts to facilitate efficient oxygen reduction/evolution reactions (ORR/OER). Single-atom catalysts (SACs), characterized by their precisely defined active sites, have great potential for applications in ZABs. However, the design and architecture of atomic site electrocatalysts with both high activity and durability present significant challenges, owing to their spatial confinement and electronic states. In this study, a strategy is proposed to fabricate structurally uniform dual single-atom electrocatalyst (denoted as P-FeCo/NC) consisting of P-bridging Fe and Co bimetal atom (i.e., Fe-P-Co) decorated on N, P-co-doped carbon framework as an efficient and durable bifunctional electrocatalyst for ZABs. Experimental investigations and theoretical calculations reveal that the Fe-P-Co bridge-coupling structure enables a facile adsorption/desorption of oxygen intermediates and low activation barrier. The resultant P-FeCo/NC exhibits ultralow overpotential of 340 mV at 10 mA cm-2 for OER and high half-wave potential of 0.95 V for ORR. In addition, the application of P-FeCo/NC in rechargeable ZABs demonstrates enhanced performance with maximum power density of 115 mW cm-2 and long cyclic stability, which surpass Pt/C and RuO2 catalysts. This study provides valuable insights into the design and mechanism of atomically dispersed catalysts for energy conversion applications.

From Charge to Spin: An In-Depth Exploration of Electron Transfer in Energy Electrocatalysis

Catalytic materials play crucial roles in various energy-related processes, ranging from large-scale chemical production to advancements in renewable energy technologies. Despite a century of dedicated research, major enduring challenges associated with enhancing catalyst efficiency and durability, particularly in green energy-related electrochemical reactions, remain. Focusing only on either the crystal structure or electronic structure of a catalyst is deemed insufficient to break the linear scaling relationship (LSR), which is the golden rule for the design of advanced catalysts. The discourse in this review intricately outlines the essence of heterogeneous catalysis reactions by highlighting the vital roles played by electron properties. The physical and electrochemical properties of electron charge and spin that govern catalysis efficiencies are analyzed. Emphasis is placed on the pronounced influence of external fields in perturbing the LSR, underscoring the vital role that electron spin plays in advancing high-performance catalyst design. The review culminates by proffering insights into the potential applications of spin catalysis, concluding with a discussion of extant challenges and inherent limitations.

Spatial engineering of single-atom Fe adjacent to Cu-assisted nanozymes for biomimetic O2 activation

The precise design of single-atom nanozymes (SAzymes) and understanding of their biocatalytic mechanisms hold great promise for developing ideal bio-enzyme substitutes. While considerable efforts have been directed towards mimicking partial bio-inspired structures, the integration of heterogeneous SAzymes configurations and homogeneous enzyme-like mechanism remains an enormous challenge. Here, we show a spatial engineering strategy to fabricate dual-sites SAzymes with atomic Fe active center and adjacent Cu sites. Compared to planar Fe-Cu dual-atomic sites, vertically stacked Fe-Cu geometry in FePc@2D-Cu-N-C possesses highly optimized scaffolds, favorable substrate affinity, and fast electron transfer. These characteristics of FePc@2D-Cu-N-C SAzyme induces biomimetic O2 activation through homogenous enzymatic pathway, resembling functional and mechanistic similarity to natural cytochrome c oxidase. Furthermore, it presents an appealing alternative of cytochrome P450 3A4 for drug metabolism and drug-drug interaction. These findings are expected to deepen the fundamental understanding of atomic-level design in next-generation bio-inspired nanozymes.

Pd "Kills Two Birds with One Stone" for the Synthesis of Catalyst: Dual Active Sites of Pd Triggers the Kinetics of O2 Electrocatalysis

Noble metal-based catalyst, despite their exorbitant cost, are the only successful catalyst for bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysis owing to their capability to drive forward the reaction rate kinetically. Therefore, it is desirable to diminish the noble metal loading without any compromise in the catalyst performance. In this study, the aim to achieve two goals with one action via a single-step route to have ultra-low loading of Pd in the catalyst. The Pd is used as a catalyst for C─C bond formation followed by complexation reactions or vice versa, in conventional Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling (SMCC) reaction, which yields a Pd-based porous organic polymer. Interestingly, it is found that dispersed Pd nanocluster (PdNC ) is present together with Pd single atom doped into nanocarbon (Pd-NC) matrix in the catalyst (PdNC /Pd-NC800 ) that obtained after pyrolysis of the porous polymer. The catalyst exhibits remarkable bifunctional activity and durability towards oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Further, it is studied that the in situ attenuated total reflection infrared (ATR-IR) spectroscopy at different electrochemical potentials during ORR and OER to observe the reaction intermediates. The homemade zinc-air battery with the catalyst displayed great performance, establishing the significance of PdNC /Pd-NC800 as a bifunctional oxygen electrocatalyst.

Current Status and Perspectives of Dual-Atom Catalysts Towards Sustainable Energy Utilization

The exploration of sustainable energy utilization requires the implementation of advanced electrochemical devices for efficient energy conversion and storage, which are enabled by the usage of cost-effective, high-performance electrocatalysts. Currently, heterogeneous atomically dispersed catalysts are considered as potential candidates for a wide range of applications. Compared to conventional catalysts, atomically dispersed metal atoms in carbon-based catalysts have more unsaturated coordination sites, quantum size effect, and strong metal-support interactions, resulting in exceptional catalytic activity. Of these, dual-atomic catalysts (DACs) have attracted extensive attention due to the additional synergistic effect between two adjacent metal atoms. DACs have the advantages of full active site exposure, high selectivity, theoretical 100% atom utilization, and the ability to break the scaling relationship of adsorption free energy on active sites. In this review, we summarize recent research advancement of DACs, which includes (1) the comprehensive understanding of the synergy between atomic pairs; (2) the synthesis of DACs; (3) characterization methods, especially aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy and synchrotron spectroscopy; and (4) electrochemical energy-related applications. The last part focuses on great potential for the electrochemical catalysis of energy-related small molecules, such as oxygen reduction reaction, CO2 reduction reaction, hydrogen evolution reaction, and N2 reduction reaction. The future research challenges and opportunities are also raised in prospective section.

Movable-type printing method to fabricate ternary FeCoNi alloys confined in porous carbon towards oxygen electrocatalysts for rechargeable Zn-air batteries

Transition metal-based carbon catalysts are a promising class of electrocatalysts to enhance the efficiency of energy conversion and storage devices. However, it remains a challenging task to develop multi-metal alloy catalysts. Herein, ternary FeCoNi alloy nanoparticles (NPs) confined in nitrogen-doped carbon (NC) catalysts were fabricated via a facile movable-type printing method, where a range of transition metals confined in NC catalysts was prepared using the same technique except for the adjustment of the metal precursors. Due to the unique electronic structure and significant active sites of the medium-entropy alloy, the FeCoNi-NC catalysts demonstrated highly efficient bifunctional electrocatalytic activities for the oxygen reduction (E1/2 = 0.838 V) and evolution (Eoverpotential = 330 mV, 10 mA cm-2) reactions, which were comparable to those of Pt/C and RuO2. Moreover, the FeCoNi-NC-based liquid rechargeable ZABs displayed a substantial power density of 231.2 mW cm-2, and the homemade flexible ZABs also exhibited outstanding activity and cycling durability. Thus, this movable-type printing method is suitable for constructing a variety of multi-metal-based catalysts for metal air batteries.

Toward three-dimensionally ordered nanoporous graphene materials: template synthesis, structure, and applications

Precise template synthesis will realize three-dimensionally ordered nanoporous graphenes (NPGs) with a spatially controlled seamless graphene structure and fewer edges. These structural features result in superelastic nature, high electrochemical stability, high electrical conductivity, and fast diffusion of gases and ions at the same time. Such innovative 3D graphene materials are conducive to solving energy-related issues for a better future. To further improve the attractive properties of NPGs, we review the template synthesis and its mechanism by chemical vapor deposition of hydrocarbons, analysis of the nanoporous graphene structure, and applications in electrochemical and mechanical devices.

Engineering Symmetry-Breaking Centers and d-Orbital Modulation in Triatomic Catalysts for Zinc-Air Batteries

Unraveling the configuration-activity relationship and synergistic enhancement mechanism (such as real active center, electron spin-state, and d-orbital energy level) for triatomic catalysts, as well as their intrinsically bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysis, is a great challenge. Here we present a triatomic catalyst (TAC) with a trinuclear active structure that displays extraordinary oxygen electrocatalysis for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), greatly outperforming the counterpart of single-atom and diatomic catalysts. The aqueous Zn-air battery (ZAB) equipped with a TAC-based cathode exhibits extraordinary rechargeable stability and ultrarobust cycling performance (1970 h/3940 cycles at 2 mA cm-2, 125 h/250 cycles at 10 mA cm-2 with negligible voltage decay), and the quasi-solid-state ZAB displays outstanding rechargeability and low-temperature adaptability (300 h/1800 cycles at 2 mA cm-2 at -60 °C), outperforming other state-of-the-art ZABs. The experimental and theoretical analyses reveal the symmetry-breaking CoN4 configuration under incorporation of neighboring metal atoms (Fe and Cu), which leads to d-orbital modulation, a low-shift d band center, weakened binding strength to the oxygen intermediates, and decreased energy barrier for bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysis. This rational tricoordination design as well as an in-depth mechanism analysis indicate that hetero-TACs can be promisingly applied in various electrocatalysis applications.

Non-noble metal single-atoms for oxygen electrocatalysis in rechargeable zinc-air batteries: recent developments and future perspectives

Ever-growing demands for zinc-air batteries (ZABs) call for the development of advanced electrocatalysts. Single-atom catalysts (SACs), particularly those for isolating non-noble metals (NBMs), are attracting great interest due to their merits of low cost, high atom utilization efficiency, structural tunability, and extraordinary activity. Rational design of advanced NBM SACs relies heavily on an in-depth understanding of reaction mechanisms. To gain a better understanding of the reaction mechanisms of oxygen electrocatalysis in ZABs and guide the design and optimization of more efficient NBM SACs, we herein organize a comprehensive review by summarizing the fundamental concepts in the field of ZABs and the recent advances in the reported NBM SACs. Moreover, the selection of NBM elements and supports of SACs and some effective strategies for enhancing the electrochemical performance of ZABs are illustrated in detail. Finally, the challenges and future direction in this field of ZABs are also discussed.

Recent progress of Ni-based nanomaterials for the electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction at large current density

The precise design and development of high-performing oxygen evolution reaction (OER) for the production of industrial hydrogen gas through water electrolysis has been a widely studied topic. A profound understanding of the nature of electrocatalytic processes reveals that Ni-based catalysts are highly active toward OER that can stably operate at a high current density for a long period of time. Given the current gap between research and applications in industrial water electrolysis, we have completed a systematic review by constructively discussing the recent progress of Ni-based catalysts for electrocatalytic OER at a large current density, with special focus on the morphology and composition regulation of Ni-based electrocatalysts for achieving extraordinary OER performance. This review will facilitate future research toward rationally designing next-generation OER electrocatalysts that can meet industrial demands, thereby promoting new sustainable solutions for energy shortage and environment issues.

Precise Design and Modification Engineering of Single-Atom Catalytic Materials for Oxygen Reduction

Due to their unique electronic and structural properties, single-atom catalytic materials (SACMs) hold great promise for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Coordinating environmental and engineering strategies is the key to improving the ORR performance of SACMs. This review summarizes the latest research progress and breakthroughs of SACMs in the field of ORR catalysis. First, the research progress on the catalytic mechanism of SACMs acting on ORR is reviewed, including the latest research results on the origin of SACMs activity and the analysis of pre-adsorption mechanism. The study of the pre-adsorption mechanism is an important breakthrough direction to explore the origin of the high activity of SACMs and the practical and theoretical understanding of the catalytic process. Precise coordination environment modification, including in-plane, axial, and adjacent site modifications, can enhance the intrinsic catalytic activity of SACMs and promote the ORR process. Additionally, several engineering strategies are discussed, including multiple SACMs, high loading, and atomic site confinement. Multiple SACMs synergistically enhance catalytic activity and selectivity, while high loading can provide more active sites for catalytic reactions. Overall, this review provides important insights into the design of advanced catalysts for ORR.

Constructing Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Hierarchy Structure Derived from Metal-Organic Framework as High-Performance ORR Cathode Material for Zn-Air Battery

The development of efficient and low-cost catalysts for cathodic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in Zn-air battery (ZAB) is a key factor in reducing costs and achieving industrialization. Here, a novel segregated CoNiPt alloy embedded in N-doped porous carbon with a nanoflowers (NFs)-like hierarchy structure is synthesized through pyrolyzing Hofmann-type metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). The unique hierarchical NFs structure exposes more active sites and facilitates the transportation of reaction intermediates, thus accelerating the reaction kinetics. Impressively, the resulting 15% CoNiPt@C NFs catalyst exhibits outstanding alkaline ORR activity with a half-wave potential of 0.93 V, and its mass activity is 7.5 times higher than that of commercial Pt/C catalyst, surpassing state-of-the-art noble metal-based catalysts. Furthermore, the assembled CoNiPt@C+RuO2 ZAB demonstrates a maximum power density of 172 mW cm-2 , which is superior to that of commercial Pt/C+RuO2 ZAB. Experimental results reveal that the intrinsic ORR mass activity is attributed to the synergistic interaction between oxygen defects and pyrrolic/graphitic N species, which optimizes the adsorption energy of the intermediate species in the ORR process and greatly enhances catalytic activity. This work provides a practical and feasible strategy for synthesizing cost-effective alkaline ORR catalysts by optimizing the electronic structure of MOF-derived catalysts.

Single-atom Zn with nitrogen defects on biomimetic 3D carbon nanotubes for bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysis

Single atoms catalysts (SACs) have promising development in electrocatalytic energy conversion. Nevertheless, rational design SACs with reversible oxygen electrocatalysis still remain challenge. Herein, we synthesized atomically dispersed Zn with N defect on three-dimensional (3D) biomimetic carbon nanotubes by secondary pyrolysis (Zn-N-C-2), which possesses excellent oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) bifunctional catalytic activities. The biomimetic 3D structure and unique "leaf-branch" system are beneficial to fully expose the active sites. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that Zn-N3-D can optimize the charge distribution and facilitate electron transfer step of OH*→O*. Zn-N-C-2 exhibits higher ORR activity than commercial Pt/C with a half-wave potential (E1/2) of 0.85 V and OER overpotential of 450 mV at 10 mA cm-2. After being assembled into the air cathode of aqueous Zn-air battery (ZAB), it demonstrates superior performances with long-term charge and discharge for more than 200 h. This work not only clarifies the controlled synthesis of N-defects Zn SACs with excellent bifunctional electrocatalyst, but also provide in-depth understanding of structural-performance relationships by regulating local microenvironments.

Targeted Spin-State Regulation to Boost Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Catalytic reactions are known to be significantly affected by spin states and their variations during reaction processes, yet the mechanisms behind them remain not fully understood, thus preventing the rational optimization of catalysis. Here, we explore the relationship between the spin states of active sites and their catalytic performance, taking the oxygen reduction reaction as an example. We demonstrate that the catalytic performance is spin-state-dependent and can be improved by adjusting spin states during the catalytic process. To this end, we further investigate the possibility of altering the spin states of transition metals through the application of external fields, such as adsorbed species. By studying the influence of the strength of adsorbed ligands on spin states and its impact on catalytic performance, our results show that optimal catalytic performance is achieved when the strength of the external field is neither too strong nor too weak, forming a volcano-like relationship between the catalytic performance and the external field strength. Our findings can have far-reaching implications for the rational design of high-performance catalysis.

Developing a class of dual atom materials for multifunctional catalytic reactions

Dual atom catalysts, bridging single atom and metal/alloy nanoparticle catalysts, offer more opportunities to enhance the kinetics and multifunctional performance of oxygen reduction/evolution and hydrogen evolution reactions. However, the rational design of efficient multifunctional dual atom catalysts remains a blind area and is challenging. In this study, we achieved controllable regulation from Co nanoparticles to CoN4 single atoms to Co2N5 dual atoms using an atomization and sintering strategy via an N-stripping and thermal-migrating process. More importantly, this strategy could be extended to the fabrication of 22 distinct dual atom catalysts. In particular, the Co2N5 dual atom with tailored spin states could achieve ideally balanced adsorption/desorption of intermediates, thus realizing superior multifunctional activity. In addition, it endows Zn-air batteries with long-term stability for 800 h, allows water splitting to continuously operate for 1000 h, and can enable solar-powered water splitting systems with uninterrupted large-scale hydrogen production throughout day and night. This universal and scalable strategy provides opportunities for the controlled design of efficient multifunctional dual atom catalysts in energy conversion technologies.

Regulating the Spin State Configuration in Bimetallic Phosphorus Trisulfides for Promoting Sulfur Redox Kinetics

Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries suffer from sluggish kinetics due to the poor conductivity of sulfur cathodes and polysulfide shutting. Current studies on sulfur redox catalysis mainly focus on the adsorption and catalytic conversion of lithium polysulfides but ignore the modulation of the electronic structure of the catalysts which involves spin-related charge transfer and orbital interactions. In this work, bimetallic phosphorus trisulfides embedded in Prussian blue analogue-derived nitrogen-doped hollow carbon nanocubes (FeCoPS3/NCs) were elaborately synthesized as a host to reveal the relationship between the catalytic activity and the spin state configuration for Li-S batteries. Orbital spin splitting in FeCoPS3 drives the electronic structure transition from low-spin to high-spin states, generating more unpaired electrons on the 3d orbit. Specifically, the nondegenerate orbitals involved in the high-spin configuration of FeCoPS3 result in the upshift of energy levels, generating more active electronic states. Such tailored electronic structure increases the charge transfer, influences the d-band center, and further modifies the adsorption energy with lithium polysulfides and the potential reaction pathways. Consequently, the cell with FeCoPS3/NC host exhibits an ultralow capacity decay of 0.037% per cycle over 1000 cycles. This study proposed a general strategy for sculpting geometric configurations to enable spin and orbital topology regulation in Li-S battery catalysts.

Spin state-dependent in-situ photo-Fenton-like transformation from oxygen molecule towards singlet oxygen for selective water decontamination

The development of 1O2-dominanted selective decontamination for water purification was hampered by extra H2O2 consumption and poor 1O2 generation. Herein, we proposed the reconstruction of Fe spin state using near-range N atom and long-range N vacancies to enable efficient generation of H2O2 and sequential activation of H2O2 into 1O2 after visible-light irradiation. Theoretical and experimental results revealed that medium-spin Fe(III) strengthened O2 adsorption, penetrated eg electrons to antibonding p-orbital of oxygen, and lowered the free energy of O2 activation, enabling the oxygen protonation for H2O2 generation. Thereafter, the electrons of H2O2 could be extracted by low-spin Fe(III) and rapidly converted into 1O2 in a nonradical path. The developed 1O2-dominated in-situ photo-Fenton-like system had an excellent pH universality and anti-interference to inorganic ions, dissolved organic matter, and even real water matrixes (e.g., tap water and secondary effluent). This work provided a novel insight for sustainable and efficient 1O2 generation, which motivated the development of new-generation selective water treatment technology.

Spin state modulation on dual Fe center by adjacent Ni sites enabling the boosted activities and ultra-long stability in Zn-air batteries

Breakthrough in developing cost-effective Fe-based catalysts with superior oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activities and ultra-long-term stability for application in Zn-air batteries (ZABs) remain a priority but still full of challenges. Herein, the neighboring NiN4 single-metal-atom and Fe2N5 dual-metal-atoms on the N-doped hollow carbon sphere (Fe/Ni-NHCS) were deliberately constructed as the efficient and robust ORR catalyst for ZABs. Both theory calculations and magnetic measurements demonstrate that the introduction of NiN4 provides a significant role on optimizing the electron spin state of Fe2N5 sites and reducing the energy barrier for the adsorption and conversion of the oxygen-containing intermediates, enabling the Fe/Ni-NHCS with excellent ORR performance and ultralow byproduct HO2- yield (0.5%). Impressively, the ZABs driven by Fe/Ni-NHCS exhibit unprecedented long-term rechargeable stability over 1200 h. This work paves a new venue to manipulate the spin state of active sites for simultaneously achieving superior catalytic activities and ultra-long-term stability in energy conversion technologies.

Phase Engineering of Molybdenum Carbide-Cobalt Heterostructures for Long-Lasting Zn-Air Batteries

Developing highly active and robust oxygen catalysts is of great significance for the commercialization of Zn-air batteries (ZABs) with long-life stability. Herein, heterostructured catalysts comprising molybdenum carbide and metallic Co are prepared by a simple dicyandiamide-assisted pyrolysis strategy. Importantly, the crystalline phase of molybdenum carbide in the catalysts can be carefully regulated by adjusting the CoMo-imidazole precursor and dicyandiamide ratio. The electronic configuration of Co and Mo centers as well as the phase-dependent oxygen reduction reaction performance of these heterostructures (β-Mo2C/Co, β-Mo2C/η-MoC/Co, and η-MoC/Co) was disclosed. A highly active η-MoC/Co cathode enables ZABs with outstanding long-term stability over 850 h with a low voltage decaying rate of 0.06 mV·h-1 and high peak power density of 162 mW·cm-2. This work provides a new idea for the rational design of efficient and stable cathode catalysts for ZABs.

A General "In Situ Etch-Adsorption-Phosphatization" Strategy for the Fabrication of Metal Phosphides/Hollow Carbon Composite for High Performance Liquid/Flexible Zn-Air Batteries

Benefiting from the admirable energy density (1086 Wh kg-1 ), overwhelming security, and low environmental impact, rechargeable zinc-air batteries (ZABs) are deemed to be attractive candidates for lithium-ion batteries. The exploration of novel oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) bifunctional catalysts is the key to promoting the development of zinc-air batteries. Transitional metal phosphides (TMPs) especially Fe-based TMPs are deemed to be a rational type of catalyst, however, their catalytic performance still needs to be further improved. Considering Fe (heme) and Cu (copper terminal oxidases) are nature's options for ORR catalysis in many forms of life from bacteria to humans. Herein, a general "in situ etch-adsorption-phosphatization" strategy is designed for the fabrication of hollow FeP/Fe2 P/Cu3 P-N, P codoped carbon (FeP/Cu3 P-NPC) catalyst as the cathode of liquid and flexible ZABs. The liquid ZABs manifest a high peak power density of 158.5 mW cm-2 and outstanding long-term cycling performance (≈1100 cycles at 2 mA cm-2 ). Similarly, the flexible ZABs deliver superior cycling stability of 81 h at 2 mA cm-2 without bending and 26 h with different bending angles.

Engineering Spin States of Isolated Copper Species in a Metal-Organic Framework Improves Urea Electrosynthesis

The catalytic activities are generally believed to be relevant to the electronic states of their active center, but understanding this relationship is usually difficult. Here, we design two types of catalysts for electrocatalytic urea via a coordination strategy in a metal-organic frameworks: CuIII-HHTP and CuII-HHTP. CuIII-HHTP exhibits an improved urea production rate of 7.78 mmol h-1 g-1 and an enhanced Faradaic efficiency of 23.09% at - 0.6 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode, in sharp contrast to CuII-HHTP. Isolated CuIII species with S = 0 spin ground state are demonstrated as the active center in CuIII-HHTP, different from CuII with S = 1/2 in CuII-HHTP. We further demonstrate that isolated CuIII with an empty [Formula: see text] orbital in CuIII-HHTP experiences a single-electron migration path with a lower energy barrier in the C-N coupling process, while CuII with a single-spin state ([Formula: see text]) in CuII-HHTP undergoes a two-electron migration pathway.

Atomic Fe/Zn anchored N, S co-doped nano-porous carbon for boosting oxygen reduction reaction

Dual-single-atom catalysts are well-known due to their excellent catalytic performance of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and the tunable coordination environment of the active sites. However, it is still challengable to finely modulate the electronic states of the metal atoms and facilely fabricate a catalyst with dual-single atoms homogeneously dispersed on conductive skeletons with good mass transport. Herein, atomic FeN_x/ZnN_x sites anchored N, S co-doped nano-porous carbon plates/nanotubes material (Fe_0.10ZnNSC) is rationally prepared via a facile room-temperature reaction and high-temperature pyrolysis. The as-prepared Fe_0.10ZnNSC catalyst exhibits a positive onset potential of 0.956 V, an impressive half-wave potential of 0.875 V, excellent long-term durability, and a high methanol resistance, outperforming the benchmark Pt/C. The outstanding ORR performance of Fe_0.10ZnNSC is due to its unique nanoarchitecture: a large specific surface area (1092.8 cm² g^-1) and well-developed nanopore structure ensure the high accessibility of active sites; the high conductivity of the carbon matrix guarantees a strong ability to transport electrons to the active sites; and the optimized electronic states of FeN_x and ZnN_x sites possess good oxygen intermediate adsorption/desorption capacity. This strategy can be extended to design and fabricate other non-precious dual-single-atom ORR catalysts.

Tailoring the d-Orbital Splitting Manner of Single Atomic Sites for Enhanced Oxygen Reduction

Regulating the electronic states of single atomic sites around the Fermi level remains a major concern for boosting the electrocatalytic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Herein, a Fe d-orbital splitting manner modulation strategy by constructing axial coordination on FeN₄ sites is presented. Experimental investigations and theoretical calculations reveal that the axial tractions induce the distortion of square-planar field (FeN₄ SP), up to the quasi-octahedral coordination (FeN₄ O₁ OC_quasi ), thus leading to the electron rearrangement with a diluted spin polarization. The declined population of unpaired electrons in d_z ² , d_{x z} and d_yz states engenders a moderate adsorption of ORR intermediates, thereby reinforcing the intrinsic reaction activity. In situ infrared spectroscopy further demonstrates that the reordering of d-orbital splitting and occupation facilitates the desorption of *OH. The FeN₄ O₁ OC_quasi exhibits a dramatic improvement of kinetic current density and turnover frequency, which are fivefold and tenfold higher than those of FeN₄ SP. This work presents a novel understanding on improving the electrocatalytic performance through the orbital-scale manipulation.

Improved Electronic Structure from Spin-State Reconstruction of a Heteronuclear Fe-Co Diatomic Pair to Boost the Fenton-like Reaction

Dual-atom catalysts (DACs) are promising candidates for various catalytic reactions, including electrocatalysis, chemical synthesis, and environmental remediation. However, the high-activity origin and mechanism underlying intrinsic activity enhancement remain elusive, especially for the Fenton-like reaction. Herein, we systematically compared the catalytic performance of dual-atom FeCo-N/C with its single-atom counterparts by activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for pollutant abatement. The unusual spin-state reconstruction on FeCo-N/C is demonstrated to effectively improve the electronic structure of Fe and Co in the d orbital and enhance the PMS activation efficiency. Accordingly, the dual-atom FeCo-N/C with an intermediate-spin state remarkably boosts the Fenton-like reaction by almost 1 order of magnitude compared with low-spin Co-N/C and high-spin Fe-N/C. Moreover, the established dual-atom-activated PMS system also exhibits excellent stability and robust resistance against harsh conditions. Combined theoretical calculations reveal that unlike unitary Co atom or Fe atom transferring electrons to the PMS molecule, the Fe atom of FeCo-N/C provides extra electrons to the neighboring Co atom and positively shifts the d band of the Co center, thereby optimizing the PMS adsorption and decomposition into a unique high-valent Fe^IV-O-Co^IV species via a low-energy barrier pathway. This work advances a conceptually novel mechanistic understanding of the enhanced catalytic activity of DACs in Fenton-like reactions and helps to expand the application of DACs in various catalytic reactions.

Boosting Benzene Oxidation with a Spin-State-Controlled Nuclearity Effect on Iron Sub-Nanocatalysts

A fundamental understanding of the nature of nuclearity effects is important for the rational design of superior sub-nanocatalysts with low nuclearity, but remains a long-standing challenge. Using atomic layer deposition, we precisely synthesized Fe sub-nanocatalysts with tunable nuclearity (Fe₁ -Fe₄ ) anchored on N,O-co-doped carbon nanorods (NOC). The electronic properties and spin configuration of the Fe sub-nanocatalysts were nuclearity dependent and dominated the H₂ O₂ activation modes and adsorption strength of active O species on Fe sites toward C-H oxidation. The Fe₁ -NOC single atom catalyst exhibits state-of-the-art activity for benzene oxidation to phenol, which is ascribed to its unique coordination environment (Fe₁ N₂ O₃ ) and medium spin state (t_2g ⁴ e_g ¹ ); turnover frequencies of 407 h^-1 at 25 °C and 1869 h^-1 at 60 °C were obtained, which is 3.4, 5.7, and 13.6 times higher than those of Fe dimer, trimer, and tetramer catalysts, respectively.

Aerogel-Based Single-Ion Magnets: A Case Study of a Cobalt(II) Complex Immobilized in Silica

The chemical immobilization of cobalt(II) ions in a silica aerogel matrix enabled the synthesis of the first representative example of aerogel-based single-ion magnets. For the synthesis of the lyogels, methyl-trimethoxysilane and N-3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl ethylenediamine were co-hydrolyzed, then the ethylenediamine groups that were immobilized on the silica matrix enabled the subsequent binding of cobalt(II) ions. Lyogels with various amounts of ethylenediamine moieties (0.1-15 mol %) were soaked in isopropanol solutions of cobalt(II) nitrate and further supercritically dried in carbon dioxide to obtain aerogels with a specific surface area of 210-596 m²·g^-1, an apparent density of 0.403-0.740 cm³·g^-1 and a porosity of 60-78%. The actual cobalt content in the aerogels was 0.01-1.50 mmol per 1 g of SiO₂, which could easily be tuned by the concentration of ethylenediamine moieties in the silica matrix. The introduction of cobalt(II) ions into the ethylenediamine-modified silica aerogel promoted the stability of the diamine moieties at the supercritical drying stage. The molecular prototype of the immobilized cobalt(II) complex, bearing one ethylenediamine ligand [Co(en)(MeCN)(NO₃)₂], was synthesized and structurally characterized. Using magnetometry in the DC mode, it was shown that cobalt(II)-modified silica aerogels exhibited slow magnetic relaxation in a nonzero field. A decrease in cobalt(II) concentration in aerogels from 1.5 mmol to 0.14 mmol per 1 g of SiO₂ resulted in a weakening of inter-ion interactions; the magnetization reversal energy barrier likewise increased from 4 to 18 K.

Light-Assisted Metal-Air Batteries: Progress, Challenges, and Perspectives

Metal-air batteries are considered one of the most promising next-generation energy storage devices owing to their ultrahigh theoretical specific energy. However, sluggish cathode kinetics (O₂ and CO₂ reduction/evolution) result in large overpotentials and low round-trip efficiencies which seriously hinder their practical applications. Utilizing light to drive slow cathode processes has increasingly becoming a promising solution to this issue. Considering the rapid development and emerging issues of this field, this Review summarizes the current understanding of light-assisted metal-air batteries in terms of configurations and mechanisms, provides general design strategies and specific examples of photocathodes, systematically discusses the influence of light on batteries, and finally identifies existing gaps and future priorities for the development of practical light-assisted metal-air batteries.

Manipulating the Spin State of Fe Sites via Fe-O-Si Bridge Bonds for Enhanced Polysulfide Redox Kinetics in the Li-S Battery

Transition metals with 3d unoccupied orbitals have superior catalytic activity, but inherent high spin suppresses their adsorption capability, leading to sluggish polysulfide conversion kinetics for Li-S batteries. Herein, we provide Fe-O-Si bridge bonds to manipulate e_g filling and induce a high-to-medium spin transition of Fe³⁺ sites, which enhances polysulfide adsorption and facilitates sulfur redox reaction kinetics. The resultant cathodes exhibit outstanding performances under high sulfur loading, which can deliver a high battery specific energy of 1061 mA h·g^-1 even after 100 cycles in Li-S pouch batteries. This work provides new insights into the kinetic and multi-step conversion mechanism of the sulfur redox reaction process, helping in the understanding and design of spin-dependent catalysts.

Orbital Occupancy and Spin Polarization: From Mechanistic Study to Rational Design of Transition Metal-Based Electrocatalysts toward Energy Applications

Over the past few decades, development of electrocatalysts for energy applications has extensively transitioned from trial-and-error methodologies to more rational and directed designs at the atomic levels via either nanogeometric optimization or modulating electronic properties of active sites. Regarding the modulation of electronic properties, nonprecious transition metal-based materials have been attracting large interest due to the capability of versatile tuning d-electron configurations expressed through the flexible orbital occupancy and various possible degrees of spin polarization. Herein, recent advances in tailoring electronic properties of the transition-metal atoms for intrinsically enhanced electrocatalytic performances are reviewed. We start with discussions on how orbital occupancy and spin polarization can govern the essential atomic level processes, including the transport of electron charge and spin in bulk, reactive species adsorption on the catalytic surface, and the electron transfer between catalytic centers and adsorbed species as well as reaction mechanisms. Subsequently, different techniques currently adopted in tuning electronic structures are discussed with particular emphasis on theoretical rationale and recent practical achievements. We also highlight the promises of the recently established computational design approaches in developing electrocatalysts for energy applications. Lastly, the discussion is concluded with perspectives on current challenges and future opportunities. We hope this review will present the beauty of the structure-activity relationships in catalysis sciences and contribute to advance the rational development of electrocatalysts for energy conversion applications.

In-Situ Grafting of Single-Atomic Titanium-Nitrogen Moiety onto Carbon Nanostructures for Efficient Photovoltaic Devices

Early transition metals offer promising orthogonal reactivity to catalytic processes promoted by late transition metals. Nevertheless, exploiting variable single-atomic configurations as reactive centers is hitherto not well documented owing to their oxophilic nature. Herein we report an in-situ grafting strategy that employs nitrogenated holey carbon nitrides as a scaffold and invokes the reasonably good match of temperature-dependent pyrolysis to stabilize an atomic titanium-nitrogen (Ti₁N₂OH) moiety onto the hierarchical porous carbon support (Ti₁/NC-SAC). The Ti₁/NC-SAC as the cathode in dye-sensitized solar cells assembly exhibited superior electrocatalytic activity toward the triiodine reduction reaction, comparable to the conventional Pt cathode. DFT studies theoretically identified that the intrinsic robust triiodine reduction activity is essentially governed by the unique edge-hosted Ti sites, from both aspects, near-optimal adsorption of I intermediate and electron-donating ability. This work sheds light on the rational design of Ti-based SACs and their applications in photovoltaic fields.

Electron spin modulation engineering in oxygen-involved electrocatalysis

Electrocatalytic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reduction (OER) are regarded as the key reactions via the sustainable system (fuel cell and water splitting), respectively. In OER, the transition from singlet oxygen species to triplet oxygen molecules is involved, meanwhile the ORR involves the transition from triplet oxygen molecules to singlet oxygen species. However, in these processes, the number of unpaired electrons is not conserved, which is not thermodynamically favorable and creates an additional energy barrier. Fortunately, regulating the electrocatalysis by spin-state modulation enables a unique effect on the catalytic performance, but the current understanding on spin-state engineering for electro-catalyzing ORR and OER is still insufficient. Herein, this review summarized the in-spin engineering for the state-of-the-art ORR and OER electrocatalysts. It began by introducing engineering of spin-state to e_gfilling for ORR and OER process, and then moved to spin polarization and spin-pinning effect for OER process. Various designed strategies focusing on how to regulate the spin-state of the active center have been summarized up. The connectivity of the structures of typical ORR (e.g. metal-nitrogen-carbon) and OER (e.g. design strategies oxides, metal organic frameworks) catalysts depending on the spin level is also discussed. Finally, we present the outlook from the aspects of template catalysts, characterization methods, regulation strategies, theoretical calculations, which will further expand the possibility of better electrocatalytic performance through spin-state modulation. This review concluded some open suggestions and prospects, which are worthy of the community's future work.
