Capture, Storage, and Release of Oxygen by Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs)

Enhanced water stability and catalytic activity of Fe-based metal-organic frameworks with co-ligands for 2,4-dichlorophenol degradation

Fe-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have good photocatalytic performance, environmental friendliness, low cost, and abundance. However, their applications are limited by low water stability, particularly in the presence of light irradiation and oxidizing agents. In this study, we present a MIL-53(Fe)-based MOF using 1,4-naphthalene dicarboxylic (1,4-NDC) and 1,4-benzenedicarboxylic (H2BDC) acid co-ligands, denoted MIL-53(Fe)-Nx, where Nx represents the ratio of 1,4-NDC. This MOF exhibits high water stability and good photocatalytic activity because of the hydrophobicity of naphthalene. The removal and mineralization rates for 100 mg/L 2,4-dichlorophenol reached 100% and 22%, respectively, within 60 min. After three cycles of use, the Fe leached into the solution from the catalysts was significantly lower than the maximum permissible limit indicated in the European Union standard. Of note, 1,4-NDC can be used to make a rigid MOF, thereby improving the crystallinity, porosity, and hydrophobicity of the resultant materials. It also significantly reduced the bandgap energy and improved the charge separation efficiency of the catalysts. This study provides a route to enhance the water stability of Fe-based MOFs via a mixed-ligand strategy to expand their applications in pollutant control.

Gas Delivery Relevant to Human Health using Porous Materials

Gases are essential for various applications relevant to human health, including in medicine, biomedical imaging, and pharmaceutical synthesis. However, gases are significantly more challenging to safely handle than liquids and solids. Herein, we review the use of porous materials, such as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), zeolites, and silicas, to adsorb medicinally relevant gases and facilitate their handling as solids. Specific topics include the use of MOFs and zeolites to deliver H2S for therapeutic applications, 129Xe for magnetic resonance imaging, O2 for the treatment of cancer and hypoxia, and various gases for use in organic synthesis. This Perspective aims to bring together the organic, inorganic, medicinal, and materials chemistry communities to inspire the design of next-generation porous materials for the storage and delivery of medicinally relevant gases.

Ultrafast and Parts-per-Billion-Level MEMS Gas Sensors by Hetero-Interface Engineering of 2D/2D Cu-TCPP@ZnIn2S4 with Enriched Surface Sulfur Vacancies

The primary challenge for resonant-gravimetric gas sensors is the synchronous improvement of the sensitivity and response time, which is restricted by low adsorption capacity and slow mass transfer in the sensing process and remains a great challenge. In this study, a novel 2D/2D Cu-TCPP@ZnIn2S4 composite is successfully constructed, in which Cu-TCPP MOF is used as a core substrate for the growth of 2D ultrathin ZnIn2S4 nanosheets with well-defined {0001} crystalline facets. The Cu-TCPP@ZnIn2S4 sensor exhibited high sensitivity (1.5 Hz@50 and 2.3 Hz@100 ppb), limit of detection (LOD: 50 ppb), and ultrafast (9 s @500 ppb) detection of triethylamine (TEA), which is the lowest LOD and the fastest sensor among the reported TEA sensors at room temperature, tackling the bottleneck for the ultrafast detection of the resonant-gravimetric sensor. These above results provide an innovative and easily achievable pathway for the synthesis of heterogeneous structure sensing materials.

Metal-organic framework (MOF)/C-dots and covalent organic framework (COF)/C-dots hybrid nanocomposites: Fabrications and applications in sensing, medical, environmental, and energy sectors

Developing new hybrid materials is critical for addressing the current needs of the world in various fields, such as energy, sensing, health, hygiene, and others. C-dots are a member of the carbon nanomaterial family with numerous applications. Aggregation is one of the barriers to the performance of C-dots, which causes luminescence quenching, surface area decreases, etc. To improve the performance of C-dots, numerous matrices including metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent-organic frameworks (COFs), and polymers have been composited with C-dots. The porous crystalline structures, which are constituents of metal nodes and organic linkers (MOFs) or covalently attached organic units (COFs) provide privileged features such as high specific surface area, tunable structures, and pore diameters, modifiable surface, high thermal, mechanical, and chemical stabilities. Also, the MOFs and COFs protect the C-dots from the environment. Therefore, MOF/C-dots and COF/C-dots composites combine their features while retaining topological properties and improving performances. In this review, we first compare MOFs with COFs as matrices for C-dots. Then, the recent progress in developing hybrid MOFs/C-dots and COFs/C-dots composites has been discussed and their applications in various fields have been explained briefly.

Microfluidic-Aerosol Hyphenated Synthesis of Metal-Organic Framework-Derived Hybrid Catalysts for CO2 Utilization

A new and efficient technique is developed by combining the hyphenated microfluidic- and aerosol-based synthesis with the coupled differential mobility analysis for the effective and continuous synthesis and simultaneous analysis of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)-derived hybrid nanostructured products. HKUST-1, a copper-based MOF, is chosen as the representative to fabricate Cu-based hybrid catalysts for reverse water-gas shift (RWGS) reaction, an effective route for CO2 utilization. The effect of precursor concentration and carrier selection on the properties of the resulting products, including mobility size distribution, crystallization degree, surface area, and metal dispersion are investigated, as well as the correlation between the material properties of the synthesized catalysts and their catalytic performance in RWGS reaction in terms of conversion ratio/rate, selectivity, and operational stability. The results indicate that the continuous microfluidic droplet system can successfully synthesize MOF colloids, followed by the continuous production of MOF-derived hybrid materials through the tandem aerosol spray-drying-reaction system. High catalytic activity and low initiate temperature toward RWGS (turnover frequency = 0.0074 s-1; 450 °C) are achievable. The work facilitates the production and the designed concept of relevant MOF-derived hybrid nanostructured catalysts in the continuous synthesis system and the enhancement of applications in CO2 capture and utilization.

Controlling Film Formation and Host-Guest Interactions to Enhance the Thermoelectric Properties of Nickel-Nitrogen-Based 2D Conjugated Coordination Polymers

2D conjugated coordination polymers (cCPs) based on square-planar transition metal-complexes (such as MO4, M(NH)4, and MS4, M = metal) are an emerging class of (semi)conducting materials that are of great interest for applications in supercapacitors, catalysis, and thermoelectrics. Finding synthetic approaches to high-performance nickel-nitrogen (Ni-N) based cCP films is a long-standing challenge. Here, a general, dynamically controlled on-surface synthesis that produces highly conductive Ni-N-based cCP films is developed and the thermoelectric properties as a function of the molecular structure and their dependence on interactions with ambient atmosphere are studied. Among the four studied cCPs with different ligand sizes hexaminobenzene- and hexaaminotriphenylene-based films exhibit record electrical conductivity (100-200 S cm-1) in this Ni-N based cCP family, which is one order of magnitude higher than previous reports, and the highest thermoelectric power factors up to 10 µW m-1 K-2 among reported 2D cCPs. The transport physics of these films is studied and it is shown that depending on the host-guest interaction with oxygen/water the majority carrier type and the value of the Seebeck coefficient can be largely regulated. The high conductivity is likely reflecting good interconnectivity between (small) ordered domains and grain boundaries supporting disordered metallic transport.

Four Lanthanide(III) Metal-Organic Frameworks Fabricated by Bithiophene Dicarboxylate for High Inherent Proton Conduction

Currently, it is still a challenge to directly achieve highly stable metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with superior proton conductivity solely through the exquisite design of ligands and the attentive selection of metal nodes. Inspired by this, we are intrigued by a multifunctional dicarboxylate ligand including dithiophene groups, 3,4-dimethylthieno[2,3-b]thiophene-2,5-dicarboxylic acid (H2DTD), and lanthanide ions with distinct coordination topologies. Successfully, four isostructural three-dimensional lanthanide(III)-based MOFs, [Ln2(DTD)3(DEF)4]·DEF·6H2O [LnIII = TbIII (Tb-MOF), EuIII (Eu-MOF), SmIII (Sm-MOF), and DyIII (Dy-MOF)], were solvothermally prepared, in which the effective proton transport will be provided by the coordinated or free solvent molecules, the crystalline water molecules, and the framework components, as well as a large number of highly electronegative S and O atoms. As expected, the four Ln-MOFs demonstrated the highest proton conductivities (σ) being 0.54 × 10-3, 3.75 × 10-3, 1.28 × 10-3, and 1.92 × 10-3 S·cm-1 for the four MOFs, respectively, at 100 °C/98% relative humidity (RH). Excitingly, Dy-MOF demonstrated an extraordinary ultrahigh σ of 1 × 10-3 S·cm-1 at 30 °C/98% RH. Additionally, the plausible proton transport mechanisms were emphasized.

Research progress on antibacterial applications of metal-organic frameworks and their biomacromolecule composites

With the extensive use of antibiotics, resulting in increasingly serious problems of bacterial resistance, antimicrobial therapy has become a global concern. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are low-density porous coordination materials composed of metal ions and organic ligands, which can form composite materials with biomacromolecules such as proteins and polysaccharides. In recent years, MOFs and their derivatives have been widely used in the antibacterial field as efficient antibacterial agents. This review offers a detailed summary of the antibacterial applications of MOFs and their composites, and the different synthesis methods and antibacterial mechanisms of MOFs and MOF-based composites are briefly introduced. Finally, the challenges and prospects of MOFs-based antibacterial materials in the rapidly developing medical field were briefly discussed. We hope this review will provide new strategies for the medical application of MOFs-based antibacterial materials.

Current advances in modulating tumor hypoxia for enhanced therapeutic efficacy

Hypoxia is a common feature of most solid tumors, which promotes the proliferation, invasion, metastasis, and therapeutic resistance of tumors. Researchers have been developing advanced strategies and nanoplatforms to modulate tumor hypoxia to enhance therapeutic effects. A timely review of this rapidly developing research topic is therefore highly desirable. For this purpose, this review first introduces the impact of hypoxia on tumor development and therapeutic resistance in detail. Current developments in the construction of various nanoplatforms to enhance tumor treatment in response to hypoxia are also systematically summarized, including hypoxia-overcoming, hypoxia-exploiting, and hypoxia-disregarding strategies. We provide a detailed discussion of the rationale and research progress of these strategies. Through a review of current trends, it is hoped that this comprehensive overview can provide new prospects for clinical application in tumor treatment. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: As a common feature of most solid tumors, hypoxia significantly promotes tumor progression. Selective Adsorption of Oxygen from Humid Air in a Metal-Organic Framework with Trigonal Pyramidal Copper(I) Sites

High or enriched-purity O2 is used in numerous industries and is predominantly produced from the cryogenic distillation of air, an extremely capital- and energy-intensive process. There is significant interest in the development of new approaches for O2-selective air separations, including the use of metal-organic frameworks featuring coordinatively unsaturated metal sites that can selectively bind O2 over N2 via electron transfer. However, most of these materials exhibit appreciable and/or reversible O2 uptake only at low temperatures, and their open metal sites are also potential strong binding sites for the water present in air. Here, we study the framework CuI-MFU-4l (CuxZn5-xCl4-x(btdd)3; H2btdd = bis(1H-1,2,3-triazolo[4,5-b],[4',5'-i])dibenzo[1,4]dioxin), which binds O2 reversibly at ambient temperature. We develop an optimized synthesis for the material to access a high density of trigonal pyramidal CuI sites, and we show that this material reversibly captures O2 from air at 25 °C, even in the presence of water. When exposed to air up to 100% relative humidity, CuI-MFU-4l retains a constant O2 capacity over the course of repeated cycling under dynamic breakthrough conditions. While this material simultaneously adsorbs N2, differences in O2 and N2 desorption kinetics allow for the isolation of high-purity O2 (>99%) under relatively mild regeneration conditions. Spectroscopic, magnetic, and computational analyses reveal that O2 binds to the copper(I) sites to form copper(II)-superoxide moieties that exhibit temperature-dependent side-on and end-on binding modes. Overall, these results suggest that CuI-MFU-4l is a promising material for the separation of O2 from ambient air, even without dehumidification.

Portable smartphone-assisted highly sensitive detection of mercury ions based on gold nanoparticle-modified NH2-UiO-66 metal-organic framework

A novel portable smartphone-assisted colorimetric method was reported for the determination of Hg2+ with good analytical performance. A Zr(IV)-based metal-organic framework functionalized with amino groups (NH2-UiO-66) has been adopted as a supporting platform to anchor gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), avoiding the migration and aggregation of AuNPs. With the addition of Hg2+, the formation of gold amalgam proved possible to enhance peroxidase-like activity of the composite (AuNPs/NH2-UiO-66), accelerating the oxidization of zymolyte 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB). In the meantime, the color of the reaction solution turned a vivid blue, and the red, green, and blue (RGB) values of the solution color changed accordingly. On account of this strategy, the quantitative detection of Hg2+ could be achieved. After the optimization of the experiment conditions, the average color intensity (Ic) resulting from RGB values was linear related to the concentration of Hg2+ from 10 to 100 nM, accompanied with a detection limit (LOD) down to 5.4 nM calculated by 3σ/S. The successful application of the designed method has been promoted to detect Hg2+ in some water samples, displaying a great potential in practical application. Furthermore, the use of a smartphone made our proposed method simple and accurate, and thus puts forward a possible way for in situ and real-time monitoring.

Directional Shunting of Photogenerated Carriers in POM@MOF for Promoting Nitrogen Adsorption and Oxidation

The efficient catalysis of nitrogen (N2 ) into high-value N-containing products plays a crucial role in the N economic cycle. However, weak N2 adsorption and invalid N2 activation remain two major bottlenecks in rate-determining steps, leading to low N2 fixation performance. Herein, an effective dual active sites photocatalyst of polyoxometalates (POMs)-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is highlighted via altering coordination microenvironment and inducing directional shunting of photogenerated carriers to facilitate N2 /catalyst interaction and enhance oxidation performance. MOFs create more open unsaturated metal cluster sites with unoccupied d orbital possessing Lewis acidity to accept electrons from the 3σg bonding orbital of N2 for storage by combining with POMs to replace bidentate linkers. POMs act as electron sponges donating electrons to MOFs, while the holes directional flow to POMs. The hole-rich POMs with strong oxidation capacity are easily involved in oxidizing adsorbed N2 . Taking UiO-66 (C48 H28 O32 Zr6 ) and Mo72 Fe30 ([Mo72 Fe30 O252 (CH3 COO)12 {Mo2 O7 (H2 O)}2 {H2 Mo2 O8 (H2 O)}(H2 O)91 ]·150H2 O) as an example, Mo72 Fe30 @UiO-66 shows twofold enhanced adsorption of N2 (250.5 cm3  g-1 ) than UiO-66 (122.9 cm3 g-1 ) at P/P0  = 1. And, the HNO3 yield of Mo72 Fe30 @UiO-66 is 702.4 µg g-1  h-1 , ≈7 times and 24 times higher than UiO-66 and Mo72 Fe30 . This work provides reliable value for the storage and relaying artificial N2 fixation.

Stepwise construction of multi-component metal-organic frameworks

Multi-component metal-organic frameworks (MC-MOFs) are crystalline porous materials containing multiple organic ligands or mixed metals, which manifest new properties beyond the linear combination of the single component. However, the traditional one-pot synthesis method for MOFs is not always applicable for synthesizing MC-MOFs due to the competitive coordination of multiple ligands and metals. Therefore, the stepwise construction of MC-MOFs has been explored, which enables more precise control of the heterogeneity within the ordered MC-MOFs. This review provides a summary of the synthesis strategies, namely, ligand exchange, coordinative modification, covalent modification, ligand metalation, cluster metalation, and use of mixed-metal precursors, for the stepwise construction of MC-MOFs. Furthermore, we discuss the applications of MC-MOFs with ordered arrangements of multiple functionalities, focusing on gas adsorption and separation, water remediation, heterogeneous catalysis, luminescence, and chemical sensing.

Direct Synthesis of Metal-Organic Framework Sols: Advances and Perspectives

The intrinsic lack of processability in the conventional nano/microcrystalline powder form of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) greatly limits their application in various fields. Synthesis of MOFs with certain flowability make them promising for multitudinous applications. The direct synthesis strategy represents one of the simplest and efficient method for synthesizing solution processable MOF sols/suspensions, compared with other approaches, for instance, the post-synthesis surface modification, the direct dispersion of MOFs in hindered ionic liquids, as well as the calcination method toward a few MOFs with melting behavior. This article reviews the recent direct synthesis strategies of solution processable MOF sols and their typical applications in different fields. The direct synthesis strategies of MOF sols can be classified into two categories: particle size reduction strategy, and selective coordination strategy. The synthesis mechanism of different strategies and the factors affecting the formation of sols are summarized. The application of solution processable MOF sols in different fields are introduced, showing great application potentials. Furthermore, the challenges faced by the direct synthesis of MOF sols and the main methods to deal with the challenges are emphasized, and the future development trend is prospected.

Immunogenic Radiation Therapy for Enhanced Antitumor Immunity via a Core-Shell Nanosensitizer-Mediated Immunosuppressive Tumor Microenvironment Modulation

Due to the immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment (TME) and weak radiation absorption, the immune response triggered by radiation therapy (RT) is limited. Herein, a core-shell nanosensitizer UiO@MnS (denoted as UM) was genuinely constructed for the amplification of RT efficacy and induction of immunogenicity via integrating MnS-reprogrammed TME with Hf-based UiO-sensitized RT. The acid-sensitive MnS would produce H2S under acidic TME to improve oxygenation through inhibition mitochondrial respiration and reducing metabolic oxygen consumption, leading to decreased HIF-1α expression and enhanced radiosensitization. In addition, the generated H2S inhibited the catalase activity to increase the H2O2 level, which subsequently enhanced the Mn2+-mediated Fenton-like reaction, resulting in G2/M cell cycle arrest to improve the cellular sensitivity for radiation. This impressive tumor oxygenation, cell cycle arrest, and radiosensitization procedure boosted RT efficacy and resulted in strong antitumor immunogenicity. Taken together, combining the immunosuppressive TME modulation with a sensitizing radiation strategy shows great promise for magnifying immunogenic RT outputs.

Two-Dimensional Metal-Organic Frameworks Towards Spintronics

The intrinsic properties of predesignable topologies and tunable electronic structures, coupled with the increase of electrical conductivity, make two-dimensional metal-organic frameworks (2D MOFs) highly prospective candidates for next-generation electronic/spintronic devices. In this Minireview, we present an outline of the design principles of 2D MOF-based spintronics materials. Then, we highlight the spin-transport properties of 2D MOF-based organic spin valves (OSVs) as a notable achievement in the progress of 2D MOFs for spintronics devices. After that, we discuss the potential for spin manipulation in 2D MOFs with bipolar magnetic semiconductor (BMS) properties as a promising field for future research. Finally, we provide a brief summary and outlook to encourage the development of novel 2D MOFs for spintronics applications.

Effective Enrichment of Phosphopeptides Using Magnetic Polyoxometalate-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks

In this study, magnetic polyoxometalate-based metal-organic frameworks (Fe3O4-POMOFs) were designed and applied to the enrichment of phosphopeptides. Thanks to the abundant metal oxide and metal ion sites, the material had a strong affinity for phosphopeptides. Simultaneously, the high amount of amino and guanidyl groups provided hydrophilicity and positive charge for phosphopeptide capture. By coupling with MS detection, the established platform possessed good reusability, high sensitivity (0.01 fmol), and high selectivity (α-casein/β-casein/bovine serum albumin = 1:1:5000). Furthermore, the method was successfully used for the detection of phosphopeptides in nonfat milk, human serum, saliva, and A549 cell lysate, showing great potential for practical application.

Polyiodo Azole-Based Metal-Organic Framework Energetic Biocidal Material for Synergetic Sterilization Applications

Biological hazards caused by bacteria, viruses, and toxins have become a major survival and development issue facing the international community. However, the traditional method of disinfection and sterilization is helpless in dealing with viruses that spread quickly and are highly infectious. Metal-organic framework (MOF) biocidal materials hold promise as superior alternatives to traditional sterilization materials because of their stable framework structures and unique properties. Now, we demonstrate for the first time the synthesis of a MOF (TIBT-Cu) containing Cu metal centers and tetraiodo-4,4'-bi-1,2,4-triazole as the main ligand. This novel MOF biocidal material has good thermal stability (Td = 278 °C), excellent mechanical sensitivity, and a high bacteriostatic efficiency (>99.90%). Additionally, the particles produced by the combustion of TIBT-Cu are composed of active iodine substances and CuO particles, which can act synergistically against harmful microorganisms such as bacteria and viruses. This study provides a new perspective for the preparation of highly effective bactericidal materials.

Ultrafast Photocatalytic Detoxification of Mustard Gas Simulants by a Mesoporous Metal-Organic Framework with Dangling Porphyrin Molecules

Developing effective catalysts to degrade chemical warfare agents is of great significance. Herein, a mesoporous MIL-101(Cr) composite material dangled with porphyrin molecules (denote as TCPP@MIL-101(Cr), TCPP = tetra(4-carboxyphenyl)porphyrin) is reported, which can be used as a heterogeneous photocatalyst for detoxification of mustard gas simulants 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfide (CEES) to 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfoxide (CEESO) with a half-life of 1 min. The catalytic performance of TCPP@MIL-101(Cr) is comparable to that of homogeneous molecular porphyrin. Mechanistic studies reveal that both 1 O2 and O2 •- are efficiently generated and play vital roles in the oxidation reaction. Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) are attached to the TCPP@MIL-101(Cr) to further enhance the catalytic activity with a benchmark half-life of 45 s, which is the fastest record so far. A medical mask loaded TCPP@MIL-101(Cr) is fabricated for practical applications, which can selectively photoxidize CEES to CEESO under sunlight and air atmosphere, exhibiting the best degradation performance among the reported fabric-like composite materials.

Exfoliation of a Two-Dimensional Metal-Organic Framework for Enhanced Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction

A two-dimensional metal-organic framework, FICN-12, was constructed from tris[4-(1H-pyrazole-4-yl)phenyl]amine (H₃TPPA) ligands and Ni₂ secondary building units. The triphenylamine moiety in the H₃TPPA ligand readily absorbs UV-visible photons and sensitizes the Ni center to drive photocatalytic CO₂ reduction. FICN-12 can be exfoliated into monolayer and few-layer nanosheets with a "top-down" approach, which exposes more catalytic sites and increases its catalytic activity. As a result, the nanosheets (FICN-12-MONs) showed photocatalytic CO and CH₄ production rates of 121.15 and 12.17 μmol/g/h, respectively, nearly 1.4 times higher than those of bulk FICN-12.

3D Lanthanide Neodymium Porphyrin Metal-Organic Framework for Photocatalytic Oxidation of Styrene

A novel three-dimensional lanthanide porphyrin-based MOF (Nd-PMOFs) was synthesized by using tetracarboxyphenyl porphyrin as the ligand and the lanthanide Nd as the coordination metal. Its specific crystal structure information was obtained by single-crystal diffraction with the space group C2/c and the empirical formula C₇₂H₄₅N₆Nd₂O_15.25. This new Nd porphyrin-based MOF with an organic framework formed by a unique coordination method enables the effective separation of photogenerated electrons and holes under photoluminescence, giving it excellent photocatalytic property which could be verified by the characterization data. The photocatalytic performance was examined by taking tert-butyl hydroperoxide as the oxidant and Nd-PMOFs as the catalyst for photocatalytic oxidation of styrene to benzaldehyde with 91.4% conversion and 81.2% benzaldehyde selectivity under optimal reactions, which surpasses most of the results reported in the literature. Several styrenes with other substituents were screened to explore the general applicability of Nd-PMOF for photocatalysis of styrene, among which Nd-PMOFs also exhibited excellent photocatalytic performance. This work offers the possibility to apply lanthanide organometallic frameworks, which are widely used in fluorescent materials, to photocatalysis. In addition, it also provides a new method for the catalytic generation of benzaldehyde from styrene that is consistent with the needs of modern green development.

Recent Developments in Nanoparticle-Based Photo-Immunotherapy for Cancer Treatment

Phototherapy is an emerging approach for cancer treatment that is effective at controlling the growth of primary tumors. In the presence of light irradiation, photothermal and photodynamic agents that are delivered to tumor sites can induce local hyperthermia and the production of reactive oxygen species, respectively, that directly eradicate cancer cells. Nanoparticles, characterized by their small size and tunable physiochemical properties, have been widely utilized as carriers for phototherapeutic agents to improve their biocompatibility and tumor-targeted delivery. Nanocarriers can also be used to implement various codelivery strategies for further enhancing phototherapeutic efficiency. More recently, there has been considerable interest in augmenting the immunological effects of nanoparticle-based phototherapies, which can yield durable and systemic antitumor responses. This review provides an overview of recent developments in using nanoparticle technology to achieve photo-immunotherapy.

Noncryogenic Air Separation Using Aluminum Formate Al(HCOO)3 (ALF)

Separating oxygen from air to create oxygen-enriched gas streams is a process that is significant in both industrial and medical fields. However, the prominent technologies for creating oxygen-enriched gas streams are both energy and infrastructure intensive as they use cryogenic temperatures or materials that adsorb N₂ from air. The latter method is less efficient than the methods that adsorb O₂ directly. Herein, we show, via a combination of gas adsorption isotherms, gas breakthrough experiments, neutron and synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and computational studies, that the metal-organic framework, Al(HCOO)₃ (ALF), which is easily prepared at low cost from commodity chemicals, exhibits substantial O₂ adsorption and excellent time-dependent O₂/N₂ selectivity in a range of 50-125 near dry ice/solvent (≈190 K) temperatures. The effective O₂ adsorption with ALF at ≈190 K and ≈0.21 bar (the partial pressure of O₂ in air) is ≈1.7 mmol/g, and at ice/salt temperatures (≈250 K), it is ≈0.3 mmol/g. Though the kinetics for full adsorption of O₂ near 190 K are slower than at temperatures nearer 250 K, the kinetics for initial O₂ adsorption are fast, suggesting that O₂ separation using ALF with rapid temperature swings at ambient pressures is a potentially viable choice for low-cost air separation applications. We also present synthetic strategies for improving the kinetics of this family of compounds, namely, via Al/Fe solid solutions. To the best of our knowledge, ALF has the highest O₂/N₂ sorption selectivity among MOF adsorbents without open metal sites as verified by co-adsorption experiments..

Drying enables multiple reuses of activated carbon without regeneration

Traditional regeneration of activated carbon is usually carried out by high-temperature oxidation in industrial processes, which reduces the quality and performance of the adsorbent, thereby increasing costs and damaging the environment. In this study, a simple drying process is proposed to enable reuse of spent activated carbon. The feasibility and merits of this method were evaluated in batch and continuous adsorption modes using dyes as adsorbates. The batch adsorption results showed that the activated carbon could be reused seven times after a simple drying process, because it led to full occupancy of the activated carbon pores by adsorbate molecules. The cumulative adsorption capacities of the activated carbon were as high as 1005.3 mg/g for methyl orange (MO) and 954.8 mg/g for methylene blue (MB). Continuous adsorption experiments in a fixed-bed column demonstrated that the activated carbon column could be reused more than three times after simply drying. Moreover, dye molecules adsorbed by the activated carbon were not leached by the stream of dye solution during reuse. This drying method exhibits three main merits for reuse of activated carbon, including (1) remarkably reduced consumption of fresh activated carbon to 51.5% or below, (2) significantly increased recovery of high-value adsorbate from the liquid phase, and (3) potential integration of multiple steps for industrial adsorption processes.

CeO2/Ni-MOF with Synergistic Function of Enrichment and Activation: Efficient Reduction of 4-Nitrophenol Pollutant to 4-Aminophenol

The conversion of organic pollutants to value-added chemicals has been considered as a sustainable approach to solve environmental problems. However, it is still a challenge to construct a suitable heterogeneous catalyst that can synchronously achieve the enrichment and activation of organic pollutants (such as 4-nitrophenol, 4-NP). Here, an organic-inorganic hybrid catalyst (CeO₂/Ni-MOF) was successfully fabricated for efficiently reducing 4-NP to 4-aminophenol (4-AP) with water as the hydrogen source. Based on the synergistic effect of Ni-MOF (adsorption action) and CeO₂ (active sites), CeO₂/Ni-MOF could achieve a reaction rate of 1.102 μmol min^-1 mg^-1 with an ultrahigh Faraday efficiency (FE) (99.9%) and conversion (97.6%). In addition, the catalytic mechanism of 4-NP reduction over CeO₂/Ni-MOF was elaborated in depth. This work presents a new avenue for the effective reduction of pollutants and provides a new strategy for designing high-performance catalysts for rare-earth metals.
