Nanostructured Conjugated Polymers for Energy-Related Applications beyond Solar Cells

Constructing N-Containing Poly(p-Phenylene) (PPP) Films Through A Cathodic-Dehalogenation Polymerization Method

Developing the films of N-containing unsubstituted poly(p-phenylene) (PPP) films for diverse applications is significant and highly desirable because the replacement of sp2 C atoms with sp2 N atoms will bring novel properties to the as-prepared polymers. In this research, an electrochemical-dehalogenation polymerization strategy is employed to construct two N-containing PPP films under constant potentials, where 2,5-diiodopyridine (DIPy) and 2,5-dibromopyrazine (DBPz) are used as starting agents. The corresponding polymers are named CityU-23 (for polypyridine) and CityU-24 (for polypyrazine). Moreover, it is found that both polymers can form films in situ on different conductive substrates (i.e., silicon, gold, ITO, and nickel), satisfying potential device fabrication. Furthermore, the as-obtained thin films of CityU-23 and CityU-24 exhibit good performance of alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction with the overpotential of 212.8 and 180.7 mV and the Tafel slope of 157.0 and 122.4 mV dec-1, respectively.

Polymerization in living organisms

Vital biomacromolecules, such as RNA, DNA, polysaccharides and proteins, are synthesized inside cells via the polymerization of small biomolecules to support and multiply life. The study of polymerization reactions in living organisms is an emerging field in which the high diversity and efficiency of chemistry as well as the flexibility and ingeniousness of physiological environment are incisively and vividly embodied. Efforts have been made to design and develop in situ intra/extracellular polymerization reactions. Many important research areas, including cell surface engineering, biocompatible polymerization, cell behavior regulation, living cell imaging, targeted bacteriostasis and precise tumor therapy, have witnessed the elegant demeanour of polymerization reactions in living organisms. In this review, recent advances in polymerization in living organisms are summarized and presented according to different polymerization methods. The inspiration from biomacromolecule synthesis in nature highlights the feasibility and uniqueness of triggering living polymerization for cell-based biological applications. A series of examples of polymerization reactions in living organisms are discussed, along with their designs, mechanisms of action, and corresponding applications. The current challenges and prospects in this lifeful field are also proposed.

Exploration of Bioinformatics on Microbial Fuel Cell Technology: Trends, Challenges, and Future Prospects

Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) are a cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative energy method. MFC technology has gained much interest in recent decades owing to its effectiveness in remediating wastewater and generating bioelectricity. The microbial fuel cell generates energy mainlybecause of oxidation-reduction reactions. In this reaction, electrons were transferred between two reactants. Bioinformatics is expanding across a wide range of microbial fuel cell technology. Electroactive species in the microbial community were evaluated using bioinformatics methodologies in whole genome sequencing, RNA sequencing, transcriptomics, metagenomics, and phylogenetics. Technology advancements in microbial fuel cells primarily produce power from organic and inorganic waste from various sources. Reduced chemical oxygen demand and waste degradation are two added advantages for microbial fuel cells. From plants, bacteria, and algae, microbial fuel cells were developed. Due to the rapid advancement of sequencing techniques, bioinformatics approaches are currently widely used in the technology of microbial fuel cells. In addition, they play an important role in determining the composition of electroactive species in microorganisms. The metabolic pathway is also possible to determine with bioinformatics resources. A computational technique that reveals the nature of the mediators and the substrate was also used to predict the electrochemical properties. Computational strategies were used to tackle significant challenges in experimental procedures, such as optimization and understanding microbiological systems. The main focus of this review is on utilizing bioinformatics techniques to improve microbial fuel cell technology.

Biosensors Based on Bio-Functionalized Semiconducting Metal Oxides

Immobilization of biomaterials is a very important task in the development of biofuel cells and biosensors. Some semiconducting metal-oxide-based supporting materials can be used in these bioelectronics-based devices. In this article, we are reviewing some functionalization methods that are applied for the immobilization of biomaterials. The most significant attention is paid to the immobilization of biomolecules on the surface of semiconducting metal oxides. The improvement of biomaterials immobilization on metal oxides and analytical performance of biosensors by coatings based on conducting polymers, self-assembled monolayers and lipid membranes is discussed.

In-depth probing of thermally-driven phase separation behavior of lamella-forming PS-b-PMMA films by infrared nanoscopy

A non-invasive, image-based analytic method utilizing scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscopy (s-SNOM) is suggested to evaluate the phase separation behavior of lamella-forming polystyrene-b-poly(methyl methacrylate) (PS-b-PMMA) block copolymer films. Taking advantage of the penetrability of the tip-enhanced IR signal into the films, the spatio-spectral maps of each component are constructed. Subsequently, the effect of a sole and combinatorial applications of the self-assembly procedures, such as solvent vapor annealing (SVA) and/or thermal annealing (TA), on the spatial distribution of PS or PMMA components is quantitatively assessed in terms of the areal portions of the PS domain, PMMA domain, and the mixed zone that is adjacent to the domain border. Additionally, by statistically comparing the local concentration profiles, the chemical contrast between the domains turns out to be dependent upon the annealing procedures (namely, SVA and SVA + TA). This technique can pave the way to an uncomplicated but precise investigation of the polymer nanostructure-based thin film devices whose performances are critically governed by the spatial arrangement of the chemical elements.

Understanding the Potential of Genome Editing in Parkinson's Disease

CRISPR is a simple and cost-efficient gene-editing technique that has become increasingly popular over the last decades. Various CRISPR/Cas-based applications have been developed to introduce changes in the genome and alter gene expression in diverse systems and tissues. These novel gene-editing techniques are particularly promising for investigating and treating neurodegenerative diseases, including Parkinson's disease, for which we currently lack efficient disease-modifying treatment options. Gene therapy could thus provide treatment alternatives, revolutionizing our ability to treat this disease. Here, we review our current knowledge on the genetic basis of Parkinson's disease to highlight the main biological pathways that become disrupted in Parkinson's disease and their potential as gene therapy targets. Next, we perform a comprehensive review of novel delivery vehicles available for gene-editing applications, critical for their successful application in both innovative research and potential therapies. Finally, we review the latest developments in CRISPR-based applications and gene therapies to understand and treat Parkinson's disease. We carefully examine their advantages and shortcomings for diverse gene-editing applications in the brain, highlighting promising avenues for future research.

Recent Advance in Ionic-Liquid-Based Electrolytes for Rechargeable Metal-Ion Batteries

From basic research to industry process, battery energy storage systems have played a great role in the informatization, mobility, and intellectualization of modern human society. Some potential systems such as Li, Na, K, Mg, Zn, and Al secondary batteries have attracted much attention to maintain social progress and sustainable development. As one of the components in batteries, electrolytes play an important role in the upgrade and breakthrough of battery technology. Since room-temperature ionic liquids (ILs) feature high conductivity, nonflammability, nonvolatility, high thermal stability, and wide electrochemical window, they have been widely applied in various battery systems and show great potential in improving battery stability, kinetics performance, energy density, service life, and safety. Thus, it is a right time to summarize these progresses. In this review, the composition and classification of various ILs and their recent applications as electrolytes in diverse metal-ion batteries (Li, Na, K, Mg, Zn, Al) are outlined to enhance the battery performances.

The synthesis of alternating donor-acceptor polymers based on pyrene-4,5,9,10-tetraone and thiophene derivatives, their composites with carbon, and their lithium storage performances as anode materials

Two conjugated polymer@activated carbon composites were synthesized by the in situ polymerization of two donor-acceptor type polymers including poly[(thiophene-2,5-yl)-((pyrene-4,5,9,10-tetraone)-2,7-yl)] (PTPT) and poly[((2,3-dihydrothieno[3,4-b][1,4]dioxine)-5,7-yl)-((pyrene-4,5,9,10-tetraone)-2,7-yl)] (POTPT) on activated carbon (AC) by one-step cross-coupling reaction catalyzed by an organometallic catalyst. Cyclic voltammetry showed that both polymers exhibited ambipolar properties, low bandgaps, and low electrode potentials, which could be useful for their application as anodes in lithium-ion battery cells (LIBs). For PTPT@AC and POTPT@AC anodes, they showed a high capacity of 253.9 and 370.5 mA h g-1 at 100 mA g-1. Besides, the capacities of pure polymers were calculated to be 693.5 and 1276.5 mA h g-1 for PTPT and POTPT, respectively, at 100 mA g-1. Compared with PTPT, the introduction of the 3,4-ethylenedioxy unit into the side chain of the thiophene unit leads to substantially improved performance of POTPT due to the lowered LUMO energy levels of POTPT and the electron-rich feature of the EDOT unit. It is suggested that the structure-tuning strategy might be an effective method to prepare the new polymer-based anode for next generation LIBs with high performance and high safety.

Good microbial affinity of phenolic carbon felt as an efficient anode for microbial fuel cells

Phenolic carbon felt (PCF) is a three-dimensional material with a simple manufacturing process and low cost. To investigate the application of PCF as an anode material for use in microbial fuel cells (MFCs), we employed PCF as the anode material for the first time in MFCs that were carbonized at different temperatures. The relationship between the intrinsic characteristics and the electrochemical performance of different PCFs was also analyzed. Here, we obtained the best power generation with a power density of up to 2600 mW/m² when PCF was heated to 900 °C (PCF-900); this power generation was much higher than that of the commercial carbon felts. From SEM images, we found that the biofilm growth of PCF-900 was quite uniform. This may result from the higher surface electropositivity of PCF-900 and increased electrostatic attraction between the microorganisms and PCF. We also analyzed the conductivity, specific surface area, functional groups, and surface charge of the PCF anode. Under the synergistic effect of these intrinsic properties, PCF-900 showed good biocompatibility for the adhesion of microorganisms and high electron transfer efficiency. In addition, PCF was easily prepared in different sizes. Thus, it could be a promising material for the application of scale-up MFCs.

Two-Dimensional Covalent Organic Frameworks with Enhanced Aluminum Storage Properties

Aluminum-ion batteries (AIBs) are regarded as one of the most promising types of energy storage device in light of the safety, natural abundance, and electrochemical properties of aluminum. However, the rate capabilities of AIBs are limited owing to the sluggish kinetics of chloroaluminate anions. In this study, a covalent organic framework (COF) is adopted as the cathode material in AIBs. Theoretical and experimental results suggest that the COFs allow fast anion diffusion and intercalation without structure collapse, owing to the robust frameworks and the hierarchical pores with a large specific surface area of 1794 m²  g^-1 . The resultant AIB exhibits remarkable long-term stability, with a reversible discharge capacity of 150 mAh g^-1 after 13 000 cycles at 2 A g^-1 . It also shows an excellent rate capability of 113 mAh g^-1 at 5 A g^-1 . This work fully demonstrates the potential of COFs in the storage of chloroaluminate anions and other large-sized ions.

A New Conducting Copolymer Bearing Electro-Active Nitroxide Groups as Organic Electrode Materials for Batteries

To reduce the amount of conducting additives generally required for polynitroxide-based electrodes, a stable radical (TEMPO) is combined with a conductive copolymer backbone consisting of 2,7-bisthiophene carbazole (2,7-BTC), which is characterized by a high intrinsic electronic conductivity. This work deals with the synthesis of this new polymer functionalized by a redox nitroxide. Fine structural characterization using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) techniques established that: 1) the nitroxide radicals are properly attached to the radical chain (continuous wave EPR) and 2) the polymer chain has very rigid conformations leading to a set of well-defined distances between first neighboring pairs of nitroxides (pulsed EPR). The redox group combined with the electroactive polymer showed not only a very high electrochemical reversibility but also a perfect match of redox potentials between the de-/doping reaction of the bisthiophene carbazole backbone and the redox activity of the nitroxide radical. This new organic electrode shows a stable capacity (about 60 mAh g^-1 ) and enables a strong reduction in the amount of carbon additive due to the conducting-polymer skeleton.

Two-Dimensional (2D) Covalent Organic Framework as Efficient Cathode for Binder-free Lithium-Ion Battery

Searching new organic cathode materials to address the issues of poor cycle stability and low capacity in lithium ion batteries (LIBs) is very important and highly desirable. In this research, a 2D boroxine-linked chemically-active pyrene-4,5,9,10-tetraone (PTO) covalent organic framework (2D PPTODB COFs) was synthesized as an organic cathode material with remarkable electrochemical properties, including high electrochemical activity (four redox electrons), safe oxidation potential window (between 2.3 and 3.08 V vs. Li/Li⁺ ), superb structural/chemical stability, and strong adhesiveness. A binder-free cathode was obtained by mixing 70 wt % PPTODB and 30 wt % carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as a conductive additive. Promoted by the fast kinetics of electrons/ions, high electrochemical activity, and effective π-π interaction between PPTODB and CNTs, LIBs with the as-prepared cathode exhibited excellent electrochemical performance: a high specific capacity of 198 mAh g^-1 , a superb rate ability (the capacity at 1000 mA g^-1 can reach 76 % of the corresponding value at 100 mA g^-1 ), and a stable coulombic efficiency (≈99.6 % at the 150th cycle). This work suggests that the concept of binder-free 2D electroactive materials could be a promising strategy to approach energy storage with high energy density.

Efficient degradation of indole by microbial fuel cell based Fe2O3-polyaniline-dopamine hybrid composite modified carbon felt anode

Indole is a high-toxic refractory nitrogen-containing compound that could cause serious harm to the human and ecosystem. It has been a challenge to develop economical and efficient technology for degrading indole. Microbial fuel cell (MFC) has great potential in the removal of organic pollutants utilizing microorganisms as catalysts to degrade organic matter into the nutrients. Herein, a novel anode of Fe₂O₃-polyaniline-dopamine hybrid composite modified carbon felt (Fe₂O₃-PDHC/CF) was prepared by electrochemical deposition. The degradation efficiency of indole by the MFC loading Fe₂O₃-PDHC/CF anode was up to 90.3 % in 120 h operation, while that of the MFC loading CF anode was only 44.0 %. The maximum power density of the MFC loading Fe₂O₃-PDHC/CF anode was 3184.4 mW·m^-2, increasing 113 % compared to the MFC loading CF anode. The superior performances of the MFC with Fe₂O₃-PDHC surface-modified anode owned to the synergistic effect of high conductive Fe₂O₃ and admirably biocompatible polyaniline-dopamine. MFC with the Fe₂O₃-PDHC/CF anode could produce considerable electricity and effectively degrade indole in water, which demonstrated a practical approach for the efficient degradation of refractory organic compounds in wastewater.

Synergistic improvement of Shewanella loihica PV-4 extracellular electron transfer using a TiO2@TiN nanocomposite

Extracellular electron transfer (EET) allows microorganisms to perform anaerobic respiration using insoluble electron acceptors, including minerals and electrodes. EET-based applications require efficient electron transfer between living and non-living systems. To improve EET efficiency, the TiO₂@TiN nanocomposite was used to form hybrid biofilms with Shewanella loihica PV-4 (PV-4). Chronoamperometry showed that peak current was increased 4.6-fold via the addition of the TiO₂@TiN nanocomposite. Different biofilms were further tested in a dual-chamber microbial fuel cell. The PV-4 biofilm resulted a maximum power density of 33.4 mW/m², while the hybrid biofilm of the TiO₂@TiN nanocomposite with PV-4 yielded a 92.8% increase of power density. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy analyses showed a lower electron-transfer resistance in the hybrid biofilm. Biological measurements revealed that both flavin secretion and cytochrome c expression were increased when the TiO₂@TiN nanocomposite presented. These results demonstrated that the TiO₂@TiN nanocomposite could synergistically enhance the EET of PV-4 through altering its metabolism. Our findings provide a new strategy for optimizing biotic-abiotic interactions in bioelectrochemical systems.

Voltage issue of aqueous rechargeable metal-ion batteries

Over the past two decades, a series of aqueous rechargeable metal-ion batteries (ARMBs) have been developed, aiming at improving safety, environmental friendliness and cost-efficiency in fields of consumer electronics, electric vehicles and grid-scale energy storage. However, the notable gap between ARMBs and their organic counterparts in energy density directly hinders their practical applications, making it difficult to replace current widely-used organic lithium-ion batteries. Basically, this huge gap in energy density originates from cell voltage, as the narrow electrochemical stability window of aqueous electrolytes substantially confines the choice of electrode materials. This review highlights various ARMBs with focuses on their voltage characteristics and strategies that can effectively raise battery voltage. It begins with the discussion on the fundamental factor that limits the voltage of ARMBs, i.e., electrochemical stability window of aqueous electrolytes, which decides the maximum-allowed potential difference between cathode and anode. The following section introduces various ARMB systems and compares their voltage characteristics in midpoint voltage and plateau voltage, in relation to respective electrode materials. Subsequently, various strategies paving the way to high-voltage ARMBs are summarized, with corresponding advancements highlighted. The final section presents potential directions for further improvements and future perspectives of this thriving field.

Improved stability and efficiency of polymer-based selenium solar cells through the usage of tin(iv) oxide in the electron transport layers and the analysis of aging dynamics

Well-performing SSCs with SnO₂ as the ETL and P3HT as the HTL, showing a long-term stability (more than 1500 h) were fabricated. Moreover, the aging process of the SSCs was analyzed in detail to explore the factors that affect the device behaviors.

Nanostructured Metal-Organic Conjugated Coordination Polymers with Ligand Tailoring for Superior Rechargeable Energy Storage

Conjugated coordination polymers have become an emerging category of redox-active materials. Although recent studies heavily focus on the tailoring of metal centers in the complexes to achieve stable electrochemical performance, the effect on different substitutions of the bridging bonds has rarely been studied. An innovative tailoring strategy is presented toward the enhancement of the capacity storage and the stability of metal-organic conjugated coordination polymers. Two nanostructured d-π conjugated compounds, Ni[C₆ H₂ (NH)₄ ]_n (Ni-NH) and Ni[C₆ H₂ (NH)₂ S₂ ]_n (Ni-S), are evaluated and demonstrated to exhibit hybrid electrochemical processes. In particular, Ni-S delivers a high reversible capacity of 1164 mAh g^-1 , an ultralong stability up to 1500 cycles, and a fully recharge ability in 67 s. This tailoring strategy provides a guideline to design future effective conjugated coordination-polymer-based electrodes.

Cost-Effective Biomass Carbon/Calix[4]Quinone Composites for Lithium Ion Batteries

Searching for new cheap encapsulating materials to decrease the solubility of organic small molecules as the cathode materials in electrolytes and improve the performance of organic lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) is very important and highly desirable. In this research, we found that a novel cheap biomass carbon (named as PPL), prepared by pyrolyzing calyxes of Physalis Peruviana L, can efficiently encapsulate calix[4]quinone to form composites, which can be used as cathodes in LIBs. The initial discharge capacity of the as-fabricated battery was 437 mAh g^-1 and could maintain 228 mAh g^-1 after 100 cycles. Even at 1 C, the discharge capacity was still 217 mAh g^-1 .

Optimization of Molecular Structure and Electrode Architecture of Anthraquinone-Containing Polymer Cathode for High-Performance Lithium-Ion Batteries

Molecular structure and electrode architecture play very important roles in electrochemical performance of polymer electrode materials for lithium-ion batteries. Here, a series of anthraquinone-containing polymers with linear (with different molecular weights (MWs)) or cross-linked polymer structures were synthesized by (living) ring-opening metatheses (co)polymerization method. The influences of the molecular structures and electrode preparation process on the architectures and electrochemical performance of polymer electrodes were systematically investigated. It was found that the low MW linear polymers suffer from severe dissolution and thus result in low initial capacity and poor cycling stability. Under optimized electrode preparation process, high MW linear polymers can be uniformly composited with conductive additives and binders and deliver stable cycling performance. Cross-linked polymer shows significantly reduced solubility but a severe aggregation problem, leading to very poor electrochemical performance. Our findings shed light on the molecular structure design and electrode preparation process of polymer electrode materials for high-performance rechargeable batteries.

Recent Progress in Organic Electron Transport Materials in Inverted Perovskite Solar Cells

Organic n-type materials (e.g., fullerene derivatives, naphthalene diimides (NDIs), perylene diimides (PDIs), azaacene-based molecules, and n-type conjugated polymers) are demonstrated as promising electron transport layers (ETLs) in inverted perovskite solar cells (p-i-n PSCs), because these materials have several advantages such as easy synthesis and purification, tunable frontier molecular orbitals, decent electron mobility, low cost, good solubility in different organic solvents, and reasonable chemical/thermal stability. Considering these positive factors, approaches toward achieving effective p-i-n PSCs with these organic materials as ETLs are highlighted in this Review. Moreover, organic structures, electron transport properties, working function of electrodes caused by ETLs, and key relevant parameters (PCE and stability) of p-i-n PSCs are presented. Hopefully, this Review will provide fundamental guidance for future development of new organic n-type materials as ETLs for more efficient p-i-n PSCs.

Photophysical and Electroluminescence Characteristics of Polyfluorene Derivatives with Triphenylamine

In this work, polymers of poly[(9,9-dioctylfluorenyl-2,7-diyl)-co-triphenylamine] with side chains containing: pyrene (C1), diphenyl (C2), naphthalene (C3), and isopropyl (C6) structures were synthesized via a Suzuki coupling reaction. The structures were verified using NMR and cyclic voltammetry measurements provide the HOMO and LUMO of the polymers. The polymer with pyrene (C1) and naphthalene (C3) produced photoluminescence in the green while the polymer with the side chain containing diphenyl (C2) and isopropyl (C6) produce dual emission peaks of blue-green photoluminescence (PL). In order to examine the electroluminescence properties of the polymers, the solutions were spin-coated onto patterned ITO anode, dried, and subsequently coated with an Al cathode layer to form pristine single layer polymer LEDs. The results are compared to a standard PFO sample. The electroluminescence spectra resemble the PL spectra for C1 and C3. The devices of C2, C3, and C6 exhibit voltage-dependent EL. An additional red emission peak was detected for C2 and C6, resulting in spectra with peaks at 435 nm, 490 nm, and 625 nm. The effects of the side chains on the spectral characteristics of the polymer are discussed.

A template-assisted strategy to synthesize a dilute CoNi alloy incorporated into ultramicroporous carbon for high performance supercapacitor application

Carbon is widely studied as an electrical double-layer capacitor (EDLC) electrode material due to its high specific surface area and good electronic conductivity. However, the low capacitance and energy density limit its further commercial applications. Herein, we report a facile and novel synthesis of dilute CoNi alloy nanoparticles embedded into ultramicroporous carbon (CoNi/UMCs) via a template-assisted strategy using SBA-15 as a template. The CoNi alloy serves as not only the electron collector to decrease the conductivity during tests, but also creates CoNi oxide/oxhydroxide on the alloy surface in an alkali solution, promoting redox reactions in pseudocapacitors, enhancing the performance of supercapacitors. Interestingly, the final morphology of the composite is not transferred from SBA-15 and the ultramicropores absolutely come from sucrose itself. However, the presence of SBA-15 can definitely enlarge the surface area of the CoNi/UMCs. After carefully tailoring the loading of CoNi, we find that 0.95% CoNi/UMCs exhibit a high surface area of 613 m2 g-1 with regular ultramicropores of 0.57 nm. Due to the synergistic effect of porous carbon and CoNi alloy, the unique 0.95% CoNi/UMCs exhibit a high specific capacitance of up to 268 F g-1 at 0.25 A g-1 in 6 M KOH aqueous solution and a high capacitance retention ratio of 97.8% after 10 000 cycles.

Recent Progress in Multivalent Metal (Mg, Zn, Ca, and Al) and Metal-Ion Rechargeable Batteries with Organic Materials as Promising Electrodes

The emerging demand for electronic and transportation technologies has driven the development of rechargeable batteries with enhanced capacity storage. Especially, multivalent metal (Mg, Zn, Ca, and Al) and metal-ion batteries have recently attracted considerable interests as promising substitutes for future large-scale energy storage devices, due to their natural abundance and multielectron redox capability. These metals are compatible with nonflammable aqueous electrolytes and are less reactive when exposed in ambient atmosphere as compared with Li metals, hence enabling potential safer battery systems. Luckily, green and sustainable organic compounds could be designed and tailored as universal host materials to accommodate multivalent metal ions. Considering these advantages, effective approaches toward achieving organic multivalent metal and metal-ion rechargeable batteries are highlighted in this Review. Moreover, organic structures, cell configurations, and key relevant electrochemical parameters are presented. Hopefully, this Review will provide a fundamental guidance for future development of organic-based multivalent metal and metal-ion rechargeable batteries.

π-Conjugated nanostructured materials: preparation, properties and photonic applications

This article reviews recent advances in π-conjugated nanostructures based on conjugated oligomers and polymers, focusing on their preparation, energy transfer abilities, optoelectronic and laser applications, and photophysical properties including light harvesting. This is a rapidly evolving field as these materials are expected to have many important applications in areas such as light-emitting diodes, solid-state lighting, photovoltaics, solid-state lasers, biophotonics, sensing, imaging, photocatalysis, and photodynamic therapy. Other advantages of these materials are their versatility, and consequently, their adaptability to diverse fields.

Morphologies Tuning of Polypyrrole and Thermoelectric Properties of Polypyrrole Nanowire/Graphene Composites

Polypyrrole (PPy) with different morphologies (e.g., particles, nanotubes, and nanowires) were successfully prepared by adding or without adding different kinds of surfactants through a chemical oxidative polymerization method, respectively. The results show that the morphologies of PPy can be effectively controlled and have a significantly effects on their thermoelectric properties. The PPy nanowires exhibit the highest electrical conductivity and Seebeck coefficient among the various PPy morphologies, such as particles, nanotubes, and nanowires, so PPy nanowires were chosen to prepare PPy nanowire/graphene thermoelectric composites via a soft template polymerization method using cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide as the template. Both electrical conductivity and Seebeck coefficient of the PPy nanowire/graphene composites increased as the content of graphene increases from 0 to 20 wt %, and as the measured temperature increases from 300 K to 380 K, which leds to the same trend for the power factor. A highest power factor of 1.01 μWm⁻¹K⁻² at ~380 K was obtained for the PPy nanowire/graphene composites with 20 wt % PPy nanowire, which is about 3.3 times higher than that of the pure PPy nanowire.

New Layered Polythiophene-Silica Composite Through the Self-Assembly and Polymerization of Thiophene-Based Silylated Molecular Precursors

A new layered hybrid polythiophene-silica material was obtained directly by hydrolysis and polycondensation (sol-gel) of a silylated-thiophene bifunctional precursor, and its subsequent oxidative polymerization by FeCl₃. This precursor was judiciously designed to guarantee its self-assembly and the formation of a lamellar polymer-silica structure, exploiting the cooperative effect between the hydrogen bonding interactions, originating from the ureido groups and the π-stacking interactions between the thiophene units. The lamellar structure of the polythiophene-silica composite was confirmed by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analyses. The solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), UV-Vis, and photoluminescence spectra unambiguously indicate the incorporation of polythiophene into the silica matrix. Our work demonstrates that using a polymerizable silylated-thiophene precursor is an efficient approach towards the formation of nanostructured conjugated polymer-based hybrid materials.

Fabrication of Porous Polyvinylidene Fluoride/Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotube Nanocomposites and Their Enhanced Thermoelectric Performance

In this paper, a solvent vapor-induced phase separation (SVIPS) technique was used to create a porous structure in polyvinylidene fluoride/Multi-walled carbon nanotube (PVDF/MWNTs) composites with the aim of increasing the electrical conductivity through the incorporation of MWNTs while retaining a low thermal conductivity. By using the dimethylformamide/acetone mixture, porous networks could be generated in the PVDF/MWNTs composites upon the rapid volatilization of acetone. The electrical conductivity was gradually enhanced by the addition of MWNTs. At the same time, the thermal conductivity of the PVDF film could be retained at 0.1546 W·m⁻¹·K⁻¹ due to the porous structure being even by loaded with a high content of MWNTs (i.e., 15 wt.%). Thus, the Seebeck coefficient, power factor and figure of merit (ZT) were subsequently improved with maximum values of 324.45 μV/K, 1.679 μW·m⁻¹·K⁻², and 3.3 × 10⁻³, respectively. The microstructures, thermal properties, and thermoelectric properties of the porous PVDF/MWNTs composites were studied. It was found that the enhancement of thermoelectric properties would be attributed to the oxidation of MWNTs and the porous structure of the composites. The decrease of thermal conductivity and the increase of Seebeck coefficient were induced by the phonon scattering and energy-filtering effect. The proposed method was found to be facile and effective in creating a positive effect on the thermoelectric properties of composites.

Self-Sensitization and Photo-Polymerization of Diacetylene Molecules Self-Assembled on a Hexagonal-Boron Nitride Nanosheet

Long poly-diacetylene chains are excellent candidates for planar, on-surface synthesized molecular electronic wires. Since hexagonal-Boron Nitride (h-BN) was identified as the best available atomically flat insulator for the deposition of poly-diacetylene precursors, we demonstrate the polymerization patterns and rate on it under UV-light irradiation, with subsequent polymer identification by atomic force microscopy. The results on h-BN indicate self-sensitization which yields blocks comprised of several polymers, unlike on the well-studied graphite/diacetylene system, where the polymers are always isolated. In addition, the photo-polymerization proceeds at least 170 times faster on h-BN, where it also results in longer polymers. Both effects are explained by the h-BN bandgap, which is larger than the diacetylene electronic excitation energy, thus allowing the transfer of excess energy absorbed by polymerized wires to adjacent monomers, triggering their polymerization. This work sets the stage for conductance measurements of single molecular poly-diacetylene wires on h-BN.

Copper-Phenylacetylide Nanobelt/Single-Walled Carbon Nanotube Composites: Mechanochromic Luminescence Phenomenon and Thermoelectric Performance

We report flexible films of organic-inorganic thermoelectric (TE) composites based on organometallic coordination compound [copper-phenylacetylide (PhC₂Cu)] nanobelts and single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs). Interestingly, an unusual mechanochromic luminescence phenomenon from bright green to dark red is clearly observed after grinding the PhC₂Cu crystalline nanobelts. The PhC₂Cu/SWCNT composites display high mechanical flexibility and excellent TE performance. The maximum power factor at room temperature can reach as high as 200.2 ± 10.9 μW m^-1 K^-2. The present study opens an avenue to fabricate novel organic-inorganic TE composite materials using organometallic coordination compounds such as PhC₂Cu.
