Abstract
The unique flavor and aroma characteristics of huajiao were not only influenced by cultivated varieties, maturity, but also geographic origin. This study compared the terpenoids of 48 species of huajiao using headspace solid-phase microextraction-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HS-SPME-GC-MS) and electronic nose (E-nose). The E-nose results showed differences in huajiao from different origins and varieties, and from the PCA loading plots it was possible to conclude that some samples contained higher levels of hydrocarbons and alcohols, providing a preliminary discrimination between different species of huajiao. Further, GC-MS results showed that six key biomarkers could be used to distinguish red and green huajiao. Red huajiao in Central China contained more terpenoids than in other regions. Nine key biomarkers could be used to distinguish red huajiao from different regions. Oil huajiao exhibited a more distinct aroma in red huajiao. Green huajiao from Yunnan Province had more terpenoids than that from other provinces. The terpenoids content of Yunnan zhuyeqing was higher than other green huajiao. Heatmap analysis helped to find the most contributors of huajiao, which could be used as key terpenoids to differentiate huajiao of different regions or cultivars. Finally, through the correlation analysis of E-nose and GC-MS, it was found that the E-nose sensors could distinguish different huajiao by specific responses to some terpenoids in the samples.

Abstract
To explore the hydroxy-alpha-sanshool (HAS) effects on the intestinal metabolites of insulin-resistant mice, the blank group (BG), model group (MG), and HAS dose group (DG) were designed. The insulin resistance (IR) model was induced through streptozotocin (STZ) combined with a high-fat and high-sugar diet. Based on the availability of the model, the HAS dose was given by gavage for 28 days. The determination of cecum and key serum indexes was made, including the contents of insulin (INS), triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol (TC), glycosylated serum protein (GSP), and glycosylated hemoglobin (GHb). The changes in gut microbiota and metabolites in cecal contents were detected by 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing and UPLC/HRMS technology, respectively. The results that the levels of GSP, GHb, TG, and TC were significantly increased; this was not the case for INS; or for the changes in the gut microbiota and metabolites in MG. However, the intervention of HAS effectively reversed these changes, for instance, it decreased levels of GSP, GHb, TG, TC, and alterations of metabolite composition for linoleic acid and tyrosine metabolism and recovered trends of declining species diversity and richness of the gut microbiota in MG. It was indicated that HAS alleviated IR by regulating the gut microbiota and metabolites and affecting lipid and amino acid metabolism pathways.

Abstract
Red Huajiao was the most important Zanthoxylum species in China, and its quality was highly determined the geographical region. This study was aimed to establish a determination method for the geographical origin recognition of Red Huajiao by using the electronic nose and ensemble recognition algorithm. Six origins of samples were detected by the electronic nose, and two categories of electronic nose sensors characteristic values, named as "optimized characteristic value" and "filtered characteristic value," were obtained by the principal component analysis and discrimination index method and Filter-Wrapper method. Based on the two categories of characteristic values, 22 kinds of model analysis methods, which belonged to five categories of ensemble recognition algorithms were used to recognize the geographical origin. The total recognition accuracy rate of the two categories of characteristic values were 83.9% and 85.7%, respectively. Furthermore, during 22 kinds of model analysis method, the ensemble Subspace KNN and Bagged Trees methods in Ensemble Learning algorithm exhibited the best distinguishing ability with the accuracy rate more than 90%. Therefore, the electronic nose combined with Ensemble Learning would be promising for the geographical origin determination application. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: This work demonstrates that the Red Huajiao can be simply and rapidly determined by using electronic nose combined with ensemble recognition algorithm, allowing to effectively distinguish geographical origin of Red Huajiao, which can provide an important reference for the quality assessment of Huajiao.

Abstract
Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) can easily induce insulin resistance (IR) in skeletal muscle, causing protein metabolism disorder and inflammation. The present study aimed to investigate whether Zanthoxylum alkylamides (ZA) could ameliorate T2DM through regulating protein metabolism disorder by using a rat model of T2DM. The predominant bioactive constituents found in ZA were hydroxyl-α-sanshool, hydroxyl-β-sanshool and hydroxyl-γ-sanshool. The results showed that ZA improved a series of biochemical indices associated with protein metabolism and inflammation in T2DM rats. Our mechanistic finding indicated that ZA promoted protein anabolism in T2DM rats by up-regulating the phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K)/protein kinase B (Akt)/mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) signaling pathway. ZA also promoted glucose transportation in skeletal muscle to ameliorate skeletal muscle IR and energy metabolism through regulating the AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) signaling pathway. Moreover, ZA inhibited protein degradation and improved protein catabolism disorder in T2DM rats by down-regulating the PI3K/Akt/forkhead box O (FoxO) signaling pathway, and ZA further ameliorated inflammation to inhibit protein catabolism via regulating the tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α)/nuclear factor κB (NF-κB) pathway in the skeletal muscle of T2DM rats. Collectively, the ameliorating effect of ZA on protein metabolism disorder in T2DM rats was the common result of regulating multiple signaling pathways. ZA decreased skeletal muscle IR to promote protein anabolism and inhibit protein catabolism for improving protein metabolism disorder, thus ultimately ameliorating T2DM. In sum, our findings demonstrated that ZA treatment could effectively ameliorate T2DM through improving protein metabolism, providing a new treatment target for T2DM.

Abstract
Pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs) and their corresponding N-oxides (PANOs) are natural protoxins biosynthesised by many plant species and are responsible for occasional fatal intoxication outbreaks due to the consumption of contaminated food. However, only in rare cases has the origin of the contamination been determined. Although their presence has been studied in many matrices, occurrence data on popular widely used cooking herbs, seeds, spices and leafy vegetables is very scarce. Therefore, a systematic study on the occurrence of PA/PANOs contaminations in these popular herbal items, available on the Belgian market, was performed, by means of a validatedtargeted LC-MS/MS analysis, followed by multilocus DNA metabarcoding to track back the origin of the contamination for seven highly to moderately contaminated samples. Our results clearly indicate that 21% of the seed spices and 25% seed-based aromatic mixes contain an amount higher than 400 μg of the 30 summed targeted PAs and PANOs per kg, the value which is currently under discussion by the European member states to be set as a maximum threshold. For both the herbs and the herb-based mixes only 7% of analysed samples exceeded these levels. As a proof of concept, multilocus DNA metabarcoding was performed on six highly contaminated samples, belonging to each subtype matrix, containing high levels of heliotrine type of PA/PANOs. Each time the analysis demonstrated the presence of DNA from a plant species belonging to the plant genus Heliotropium. Moreover, a contaminated leafy vegetable sample, containing solely senecionine type PA/PANOs, contained DNA from Senecio vulgaris. Taken together, it can be stated that the proposed combinatory chemical and molecular techniques could be used to verify if a PA/PANO(s) contamination occurred in these popular cooking items and to pinpoint the origin the contamination, which is pivotal in the case of a detrimental intoxication or intoxication outbreak.

Abstract
Zanthoxylum zanthoxyloides is a West African forest tree that is used for example against malaria and sickle cell anemia in Burkina Faso. The goal of this study was to analyze the genetic and morphological diversity of the species within wild populations in Burkina Faso, where it is potentially under threat due to the uncontrolled harvesting of its roots. Seventy-two trees from three different sites in Southwestern Burkina Faso were analyzed. Each tree was characterized by 12 traits specifying the period of flowering and maturity as well as morphological characteristics of the stem, leaves, and seeds. The molecular analysis was performed using two plastid DNA regions (psbA-trnH and trnL-trnF) and two nuclear regions (GBSSI and ITS) to identify the genetic diversity of the species for further development of a management plan for ex situ reproduction and in situ conservation. We found variability in morphological traits correlating with the geographic distance of the study sites. The molecular analysis, in contrast, revealed hardly any genetic variability among the tested trees and no population structure. Whether the differences in morphological traits are caused by different environmental conditions or by genetic variability in genes linked to morphological traits needs further testing. The apparent lack of genetic differentiation suggests that germplasm throughout the study region is suitable for planting in conservation actions. Efficient conservation management should involve local communities, especially those interested in traditional medicine.

Abstract
Essential oils (EOs) extracted from leaves (EL) and fruit pericarp (EFP) of Zanthoxylum planispinum var. dintanensis were analyzed for their chemical composition by GC-MS technique and evaluated for their fumigant, contact toxicity and repellency against three stored-product insects, namely Tribolium castaneum, Lasioderma serricorne, and Liposcelis bostrychophila adults. Results of GC-MS analysis manifested that EL and EFP of Z. planispinum var. dintanensis were mainly composed of oxygenated monoterpenes. Major components included linalool, sylvestrene and terpinen-4-ol. The obvious variation observed between two oil samples was that EL contained 2-dodecanone (11.52%) in addition to the above mentioned components, while this constituent was not detected in EFP. Bioassays of insecticidal and repellent activities were performed for EL, EFP as well as some of their individual compounds (linalool, terpinen-4-ol and 2-dodecanone). Testing results indicated that EL, EFP, linalool, terpinen-4-ol and 2-dodecanone exhibited potent insecticidal and repellent activities against the three target insects selected. Among the three individual compounds, 2-dodecanone was significantly toxic to T. castaneum (LD50 = 5.21 μg/adult), L. serricorne (LD50 = 2.54 μg/adult) and L. bostrychophila (LD50 = 23.41 μg/cm2) in contact assays and had beneficial repellent effects on L. serricorne at 2 and 4 h post-exposure. The anti-insect efficacy of Z. planispinum var. dintanensis EO suggests it has potential to be used as botanical insecticide or repellent to control pest damage in warehouses and grain stores.
