In situ studies of reversible solid-gas reactions of ethylene responsive silver pyrazolates

Solid-gas reactions and in situ powder X-ray diffraction investigations of trinuclear silver complexes {[3,4,5-(CF3)3Pz]Ag}3 and {[4-Br-3,5-(CF3)2Pz]Ag}3 supported by highly fluorinated pyrazolates reveal that they undergo intricate ethylene-triggered structural transformations in the solid-state producing dinuclear silver-ethylene adducts. Despite the complexity, the chemistry is reversible producing precursor trimers with the loss of ethylene. Less reactive {[3,5-(CF3)2Pz]Ag}3 under ethylene pressure and low-temperature conditions stops at an unusual silver-ethylene complex in the trinuclear state, which could serve as a model for intermediates likely present in more common trimer-dimer reorganizations described above. Complete structural data of three novel silver-ethylene complexes are presented together with a thorough computational analysis of the mechanism.

Insights into structure-property relationships in ionic liquids using cyclic perfluoroalkylsulfonylimides

Room temperature ionic liquids of cyclic sulfonimide anions ncPFSI (ring size: n = 4-6) with the cations [EMIm]⁺ (1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium), [BMIm]⁺ (1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium) and [BMPL]⁺ (BMPL = 1-butyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium) have been synthesized. Their solid-state structures have been elucidated by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and their physicochemical properties (thermal behaviour and stability, dynamic viscosity and specific conductivity) have been assessed. In addition, the ion diffusion was studied by pulsed field gradient stimulated echo (PFGSTE) NMR spectroscopy. The decisive influence of the ring size of the cyclic sulfonimide anions on the physicochemical properties of the ILs has been revealed. All ILs show different properties compared to those of the non-cyclic TFSI anion. While these differences are especially distinct for ILs with the very rigid 6cPFSI anion, the 5-membered ring anion 5cPFSI was found to result in ILs with relatively similar properties. The difference between the properties of the TFSI anion and the cyclic sulfonimide anions has been rationalized by the rigidity (conformational lock) of the cyclic sulfonimide anions. The comparison of selected IL properties was augmented by MD simulations. These highlight the importance of π⁺-π⁺ interactions between pairs of [EMIm]⁺ cations in the liquid phase. The π⁺-π⁺ interactions are evident for the solid state from the molecular structures of the [EMIm]⁺-ILs with the three cyclic imide anions determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction.

Single-Crystal-to-Single-Crystal Transformations of Metal-Organic-Framework-Supported, Site-Isolated Trigonal-Planar Cu(I) Complexes with Labile Ligands

Transition-metal complexes bearing labile ligands can be difficult to isolate and study in solution because of unwanted dinucleation or ligand substitution reactions. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) provide a unique matrix that allows site isolation and stabilization of well-defined transition-metal complexes that may be of importance as moieties for gas adsorption or catalysis. Herein we report the development of an in situ anion metathesis strategy that facilitates the postsynthetic modification of Cu(I) complexes appended to a porous, crystalline MOF. By exchange of coordinated chloride for weakly coordinating anions in the presence of carbon monoxide (CO) or ethylene, a series of labile MOF-appended Cu(I) complexes featuring CO or ethylene ligands are prepared and structurally characterized using X-ray crystallography. These complexes have an uncommon trigonal planar geometry because of the absence of coordinating solvents. The porous host framework allows small and moderately sized molecules to access the isolated Cu(I) sites and displace the "place-holder" CO ligand, mirroring the ligand-exchange processes involved in Cu-centered catalysis.

Type 3 Porous Liquids for the Separation of Ethane and Ethene

We assess the potential for formulating a porous liquid that could be used as a selective solvent for the separation of ethane and ethene. Ethane-ethene separation is performed on very large scales by cryogenic distillation, but this uses large amounts of energy. Solvents that are selective to ethane or ethene could potentially enable more efficient liquid-based separation processes to be developed, but to date such solvents have been elusive. Here, Type 3 porous liquids, which consist of microporous solids dispersed in size-excluded liquid phases, were tailored toward the separation of ethane and ethene. A high selectivity for ethene over ethane (25.6 at 0.8 bar) and a high capacity was achieved for zeolite AgA dispersed in an Ag-containing ionic liquid. Unusually for liquid phases, the selectivity for ethane over ethene (2.55 at 0.8 bar) could also be achieved using either the metal-organic framework (MOF) Cu(Qc)₂ (Qc = quinoline-5-carboxylate) dispersed in sesame oil or ZIF-7 in sesame oil, the latter showing gated uptake. The efficiency of the Cu(Qc)₂ synthesis was increased by developing a mechanochemical method. The regeneration of Cu(Qc)₂ in sesame oil and ZIF-7 in sesame oil was also demonstrated, suggesting that these or similar porous liquids could potentially be applied in cyclic separation processes.

Synthetic Studies toward Dimeric Indole Alkaloids Based on Convergent Synthetic Strategy

The total syntheses of dimeric indole alkaloids, haplophytine, and T988s are described. These dimeric compounds comprising two structurally different indole units are ubiquitous in nature, and many possess pharmaceutically important activities. To realize an efficient chemical synthesis of these dimeric indole alkaloids, the establishment of convergent synthetic strategies and development of new coupling methods are indispensable. The linkage of two highly functionalized units at a late stage of the synthesis frequently induces synthetic problems such as chemoselectivity and steric repulsion. Moreover, although transition metal-catalyzed reactions are usually an effective method for the cross-coupling of two units, the application of these cross-coupling reactions to bond formation involving a sterically hindered C(sp³) is often difficult. Thus, even with precise modern synthetic methods, it is currently difficult to realize convergent syntheses of dimeric indole alkaloids possessing a quaternary carbon linking two units. To combat these synthetic problems, we developed a synthetic method to link two indole units using an Ag-mediated nucleophilic substitution reaction. In this review, we provide a detailed discussion of convergent synthetic strategies and coupling methods for dimeric indole alkaloids.

Structural features of uranyl acrylate complexes with s-, p-, and d-monovalent metals

A series of uranyl acrylate complexes with s-, p-, and d- monovalent cations (Li, Na, Tl, and Ag) was synthesized and characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction and IR spectroscopy. We demonstrated that the nature of the monovalent cation strongly affects the composition and crystal structure of an uranyl acrylate. Li[UO2(acr)3]·H2O (1, acr=CH2CHCOO−) crystallizes in the tetragonal crystal system and is built of chains which are connected through hydrogen bonding. The presence of an acrylic acid dimer in the reaction results in the monoclinic compound Na3[UO2(acr)3][UO2(acr)2.5(CH2CHCOOCH2CH2COO)0.5]2·5H2O (2), in which the acrylic dimer shares a position with both the acrylate anion and a water molecule. Tl[UO2(acr)3] (3) exists as two polymorphs and crystallizes in either P1̅ (3a) or P2 1 3 (3b) space groups. The polymorphs differ in the dimensionality, 2D for 3a and 3D for 3b, and density. Ag2[UO2(NO3)2(acr)2]·2Hacr (4) is the first example of the Ag atom coordination to the acrylate anion through the vinyl group. In 4, the Ag–C bonds enhances the connectivity of the trinuclear [Ag2UO2(acr)2(Hacr)2(NO3)2] clusters into a layered coordination polymer. A detailed structural study of the obtained compounds was performed using Voronoi-Dirichlet tessellation.

Taming the Cationic Beast: Novel Developments in the Synthesis and Application of Weakly Coordinating Anions

This Review gives a comprehensive overview of the most topical weakly coordinating anions (WCAs) and contains information on WCA design, stability, and applications. As an update to the 2004 review, developments in common classes of WCA are included. Methods for the incorporation of WCAs into a given system are discussed and advice given on how to best choose a method for the introduction of a particular WCA. A series of starting materials for a large number of WCA precursors and references are tabulated as a useful resource when looking for procedures to prepare WCAs. Furthermore, a collection of scales that allow the performance of a WCA, or its underlying Lewis acid, to be judged is collated with some advice on how to use them. The examples chosen to illustrate WCA developments are taken from a broad selection of topics where WCAs play a role. In addition a section focusing on transition metal and catalysis applications as well as supporting electrolytes is also included.

Experimental Insight into the Thermodynamics of the Dissolution of Electrolytes in Room-Temperature Ionic Liquids: From the Mass Action Law to the Absolute Standard Chemical Potential of a Proton

Room-temperature ionic liquids (ILs) are a class of nonaqueous solvents that have expanded the realm of modern chemistry, drawing increasing interest over the last few decades, not only in terms of their own unique physical chemistry but also in many applications including organic synthesis, electrochemistry, and biological systems, wherein charged solutes (i.e., electrolytes) often play vital roles. However, our fundamental understanding of the dissolution of an electrolyte in an IL is still rather limited. For example, the activity of a charged species has frequently been assumed to be unity without a clear experimental basis. In this study, we have discussed a standard component-based scheme for the dissolution of an electrolyte in an IL, supported by our observation of ideal Nernstian responses for the reduction of silver and ferrocenium salts in a representative IL, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide ([emim⁺][NTf₂ ^-] or [emim⁺][TFSI^-]). Using this scheme, which was also supported by temperature-dependent measurements with ILs having longer alkyl chains in the imidazolium ring, and the solubility of the IL in water, we established the concept of Gibbs transfer energies of "pseudo-single ions" from the IL to conventional neutral molecular solvents (water, acetonitrile, and methanol). This concept, which bridges component- and constituent-based energetics, utilizes an extrathermodynamic assumption, which itself was justified by experimental observations. These energies enable us to eliminate inner potential differences between the IL and molecular solvents (solvent-solvent interactions), that is, on a practical level, conditional liquid junction potential differences, so that we can discuss ion-solvent interactions independently. Specifically, we have examined the standard electrode potential of the ferrocenium/ferrocene redox couple, Fc⁺/Fc, and the absolute intrinsic standard chemical potential of a proton in [emim⁺][NTf₂ ^-], finding that the proton is more acidic in the IL than in water by 6.5 ± 0.6 units on the unified pH scale. These results strengthen the progress on the physical chemistry of ions in IL solvent systems on the basis of their activities, providing a rigorous thermodynamic framework.

Liquid silver tris(perfluoroethyl)trifluorophosphate salts as new media for propene/propane separation

A series of silver tris(perfluoroethyl)trifluorophosphate (Ag[FAP]) complexes with various ligands (acetonitrile ACN, chloroacetonitrile Cl-ACN, acrylonitrile acryl-CN, pyridine py, ethylenediamine en and propene C₃H₆) have been synthesized starting from Ag[NO₃] and K[FAP] using three different routes. Physicochemical properties as well as crystal structures ([Ag(ACN)_2/4][FAP], [Ag(py)₂][FAP]) were determined and the suitability of such Ag salts for propene/propane separation processes was investigated. The investigated silver complexes exhibit either low melting points or form liquid complexes when contacted with gaseous propene at 30 °C. This makes them promising separation materials for both liquid membranes and absorber fluids due to their high silver content and significant propene capacity. Single (iGSC) and mixed (NMR) gas solubilities as well as diffusion coefficients (PFG-NMR) of propene and propane were determined to predict the theoretical selectivity of solubility, membrane selectivity, capacity and transport properties of the silver salts according to the solution diffusion model. A strong influence of the number and type of ligands on chemical complexation, physicochemical properties and separation performance has been observed.

Ionic liquids from cationic palladium(II) chelate complexes: preparation, thermal properties, and crystal structures

Metal-containing ionic liquids comprising cationic Pd(II) chelate complexes and the bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)amide (Tf2N) anion were prepared: [Pd(acac)(Me4en)]Tf2N (1), [Pd(acac)(BuMe3en)]Tf2N (2), and [Pd(C8-acac)(Me4en)]Tf2N (3) (acac = 2,4-pentanedionate, C8-acac = 3-octyl-2,4-pentanedionate, Me4en = N,N,N',N'-tetramethylethylenediamine, BuMe3en = N-butyl-N,N',N'-trimethylethylenediamine). These salts were yellow solids with melting points of 85.2 °C, 71.1 °C, and 62.3 °C, respectively. During cooling from the liquid state, complex 1 exhibited crystallization, whereas 2 and 3 exhibited only glass transitions at approximately -40 °C. X-ray structure determination revealed that the cations in 1 and 3 form dimer-like arrangements and that there were no direct contacts between the charged moieties of the cations and anions in the solid state.

The ultrasounds-ionic liquids synergy on the copper catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition between phenylacetylene and 4-azidoquinoline

The effect of ultrasound irradiation on the copper catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition between phenylacetylene and 4-azidoquinoline has been studied in solution of different ionic liquids. In particular, we used ionic liquids featuring both aliphatic and aromatic mono- and dications, as well as anions differing in size, symmetry and coordination ability. We also examined the influence of the ionic liquids structural features on the reaction outcomes, finding that under magnetic stirring reactivity is favorably affected by the solvent structural organization, while under sonochemical conditions an opposite trend was observed. In all cases examined, sonochemical activation leads to significant reduction in energy consumption as compared to the reaction conducted under magnetic stirring.

Ferrocenyl-phosphonium ionic liquids - synthesis, characterisation and electrochemistry

New unsymmetrically substituted ferrocenyl-phosphonium ionic liquids (ILs) [FcPR2R']NTf2 are synthesized by two or three step syntheses starting from ferrocene, Fc = (C5H5)Fe(C5H4); R = Me, (n)Bu, (n)Hex, Ph; R' = Me, (n)Pr, (n)Bu, Ph; NTf2 = N(SO2CF3)2. The selective synthesis of alkyl phosphines FcPR2via a Friedel-Crafts phosphorylation is highlighted as an alternative for the standard protocol commonly used for ferrocenyl arylphosphines involving lithiation of FcH followed by phosphorylation. The influence of the P-substituents on thermal stability, electrochemical potential, chemical shift, and UV-Vis absorption behavior of the ILs is studied. The phosphonium group acts both as an ionic tag and as an electron-withdrawing substituent directly bound at the Cp-ring position. Therefore the title compounds are attractive for further studies to use them as tunable redox mediators for (photo)electrochemical devices such as dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) or redox flow batteries.
