Abstract
A selective deelectronation reagent with very high potential of +2.00 (solution)/+2.41 V (solid-state) vs. Fc+/0 and based on a room temperature stable perfluoronaphthalene (naphthaleneF) radical cation salt was developed and applied. The solid-state deelectronation of commercial naphthaleneF with [NO]+[F{Al(ORF)3}2]- generates [naphthaleneF]+⋅[F{Al(ORF)3}2]- (ORF=OC(CF3)3) in gram scale. Thermochemical analysis unravels the solid-state deelectronation potential of the starting [NO]+-reagent to be +2.34 V vs. Fc+/0 with [F{Al(ORF)3}2]- counterion, but only +1.14 V vs. Fc+/0 with the small [SbF6]- ion. Selective reactions demonstrate the selectivity of [naphthaleneF]+⋅ for deelectronation of a multitude of organ(ometall)ic molecules and elements in solution: providing the molecular structures of the acene dications [tetracene]2+, [pentacene]2+ or spectroscopic evidence for the carbonyl complex of the ferrocene dication [Fc(CO)]2+, the [P9]+ cation from white phosphorus, the solvent-free copper(I) salt starting from copper metal and the dicationic Fe(IV)-scorpionate complex [Fe(sc)2]2+.

Abstract
To realize an energy storage transition beyond Li-ion competitive technologies, earth-abundant elements, such as Mg, are needed. Carborane anions are particularly well-suited to realizing magnesium-ion batteries (MIBs), as their inert and weakly coordinating properties beget excellent electrolyte performance. However, utilizing these materials in actual electrochemical cells has been hampered by the reliance on the Mg2+ salts of the commercially available [HCB11H11]- anion, which is not soluble in more weakly binding solvents apart from the higher glymes. Herein, we demonstrate it is possible to iteratively engineer the [HCB11H11]- anion surface synthetically to address previous solubility issues and yield a highly conductive (up to 7.33 mS cm-1) and electrochemically stable (up to +4.2 V vs Mg2+/0) magnesium electrolyte that surpasses the state of the art. This novel non-nucleophilic electrolyte exhibits highly dissociative behavior regardless of concentration and is tolerant of prolonged periods of cycling in symmetric cells at high current densities (up to 2.0 mA cm-2, 400 h). The hydrocarbon functionalized carborane electrolyte presented here demonstrates >96% Coulombic efficiency when paired with a Mo6S8 cathode. This approach realizes a needed candidate to discover next-generation cathode materials that can enable the design of practical and commercially viable Mg batteries.

Abstract
Realization of practical sodium metal batteries (SMBs) is hindered due to lack of compatible electrolyte components, dendrite propagation, and poor understanding of anodic interphasial chemistries. Chemically robust liquid electrolytes that facilitate both favorable sodium metal deposition and a stable solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) are ideal to enable sodium metal and anode-free cells. Herein we present advanced characterization of a novel fluorine-free electrolyte utilizing the [HCB11 H11 ]1- anion. Symmetrical Na cells operated with this electrolyte exhibit a remarkably low overpotential of 0.032 V at a current density of 2.0 mA cm-2 and a high coulombic efficiency of 99.5 % in half-cell configurations. Surface characterization of electrodes post-operation reveals the absence of dendritic sodium nucleation and a surprisingly stable fluorine-free SEI. Furthermore, weak ion-pairing is identified as key towards the successful development of fluorine-free sodium electrolytes.

Abstract
Nitro‐functionalized undecahalogenated closo‐dodecaborates [B12X11(NO2)]2− were synthesized in high purities and characterized by NMR, IR, and Raman spectroscopy, single crystal X‐diffraction, mass spectrometry, and gas‐phase ion vibrational spectroscopy. The NO2 substituent leads to an enhanced electronic and electrochemical stability compared to the parent perhalogenated [B12X12]2− (X=F–I) dianions evidenced by photoelectron spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and quantum‐chemical calculations. The stabilizing effect decreases from X=F to X=I. Thermogravimetric measurements of the salts indicate the loss of the nitric oxide radical (NO.). The homolytic NO. elimination from the dianion under very soft collisional excitation in gas‐phase ion experiments results in the formation of the radical [B12X11O]2−.. Theoretical investigations suggest that the loss of NO. proceeds via the rearrangement product [B12X11(ONO)]2−. The O‐bonded nitrosooxy structure is thermodynamically more stable than the N‐bonded nitro structure and its formation by radical recombination of [B12X11O]2−. and NO. is demonstrated.

Abstract
Boron's unique position in the Periodic Table, that is, at the apex of the line separating metals and nonmetals, makes it highly versatile in chemical reactions and applications. Contemporary demand for renewable and clean energy as well as energy-efficient products has seen boron playing key roles in energy-related research, such as 1) activating and synthesizing energy-rich small molecules, 2) storing chemical and electrical energy, and 3) converting electrical energy into light. These applications are fundamentally associated with boron's unique characteristics, such as its electron-deficiency and the availability of an unoccupied p orbital, which allow the formation of a myriad of compounds with a wide range of chemical and physical properties. For example, boron's ability to achieve a full octet of electrons with four covalent bonds and a negative charge has led to the synthesis of a wide variety of borate anions of high chemical and electrochemical stability-in particular, weakly coordinating anions. This Review summarizes recent advances in the study of boron compounds for energy-related processes and applications.

Abstract
Classically closo-carborane anions, particularly [HCB11H11]- and [HCB9H9]-, and their derivatives have primarily been used as weakly coordinating anions to isolate reactive intermediates, platforms for stoichiometric and catalytic functionalization, counteranions for simple Lewis acid catalysis, and components of materials like liquid crystals. The aim of this article is to educate the reader on the contemporary nonclassical applications of these anions. Specifically, this review will cover new directions in main group catalysis utilized to achieve some of the most challenging catalytic reactions such as C-F, C-H, and C-C functionalizations that are difficult or impossible to realize with transition metals. In addition, the review will cover the utilization of the clusters as dianionic C σ-bound ligands for coordination chemistry, ligand substituents for coordination chemistry and advanced catalyst design, and covalently bound spectator substituents to stabilize radicals. Furthermore, their applications as solution-based and solid-state electrolytes for Li, Na, and Mg batteries will be discussed.

Abstract
Cyclic voltammograms of 12-iodinated icosahedral carborane anions [1-X-12-I-CB11Me10-] (X = H, CH3, C2H5, C3H7, C4H9, C6H13, and COOCH3) show two one-electron anodic oxidation peaks at the Pt electrode in liquid SO2. Oddly, the first is irreversible and the second partially reversible. Mass spectrometry of the principal anionic product of preparative anodic oxidation of [1-H-12-I-CB11Me11-], identical with the anionic product of its reaction with [Et3Si-H-SiEt3]+ and/or Et3Si+, allows it to be identified as the iodonium ylide anion [{12-(1-H-CB11Me10-)}2I+]. Its reversible oxidation to a neutral ylide radical [{12-(1-H-CB11Me10•)}{12-(1-H-CB11Me10-)}I+] is responsible for the second peak. A DFT geometry optimization suggests that both the ylide anion and the ylide radical are very crowded and have an unusually large C-I-C valence angle of ∼132°; they are the first compounds with two bulky highly methylated CB11 cages attached to the same atom. Molecular iodine is another product of the electrolysis. We propose an electrode mechanism in which initial one-electron oxidation of [1-X-12-I-CB11Me10-] is followed by a transfer of an iodine atom from the B-I bond to SO2 to yield a weakly bound radical ISO2• which disproportionates into SO2 and I2. The other product is the borenium ylide [12-dehydro-1-X-CB11Me10], which has a strongly Lewis acidic naked vertex in position 12 that rapidly adds to another [1-X-12-I-CB11Me10-] anion to form the observed stable ylide anion [{12-(1-X-CB11Me10-)}2I+]. In acetonitrile, where it presumably exists as a solvent adduct, [12-dehydro-1-X-CB11Me10] has been trapped with H2O and, to a small extent, with MeOH, but not with several other potential trapping agents.

Abstract
Anodic oxidation of [CB11H12]- and 18 of its halogenated and/or methylated derivatives was examined. Reversible oxidation was found for four of the anions in liquid SO2 and for four more in 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoroisopropyl alcohol. The oxidation occurred at ∼1 V (for [CB11Me12]-) up to more than 4 V (for [1-H-(2-6)-F5-(7-12)-(CF3)6-CB11]-) relative to ferrocene/ferricinium. The anodic peak potentials are reproduced by a set of additive position-sensitive substituent increments.

Abstract
Disubstituted carba-closo-dodecaborate anions with one functional group bonded to the cluster carbon atom and one ethynyl group bonded to the antipodal boron atom were synthesized from easily accessible {closo-1-CB11} clusters. [Et4N][1-NC-12-HC≡C-closo-1-CB11H10] ([Et4N]4b) was prepared starting from Cs[12-Et3SiC≡C-closo-1-CB11H11] (Cs1c) via salts of the anions [1-HO(O)C-12-HC≡C-closo-1-CB11H10](-) (2b) and [1-H2N(O)C-12-HC≡C-closo-1-CB11H10](-) (3b). In a similar reaction sequence [Et4N][1-CN-12-HC≡C-closo-1-CB11H10] ([Et4N]7b) was obtained from Cs[1-H2N-12-HC≡C-closo-1-CB11H10] (Cs5b) by formamidation to yield [Et4N][1-H(O)CHN-12-HC≡C-closo-1-CB11H10] ([Et4N]6b) and successive dehydration. In addition, the synthesis of the isonitrile [Et4N][1-CN-closo-1-CB11H11] ([Et4N]7a) is presented. The {closo-1-CB11} derivatives were characterized by multinuclear NMR as well as vibrational spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and elemental analysis. The crystal structures of [Et4N][1-HO(O)C-12-HC≡C-closo-1-CB11H10] ([Et4N]2b), [Et4N][1-H2N(O)C-12-HC≡C-closo-1-CB11H10] ([Et4N]3b), [Et4N][1-NC-12-HC≡C-closo-1-CB11H10] ([Et4N]4b), [Et4N][1-H(O)CHN-12-HC≡C-closo-1-CB11H10] ([Et4N]6b), [Et4N][1-CN-12-HC≡C-closo-1-CB11H10] ([Et4N]7b), and K[1-H(O)CHN-closo-1-CB11H11] ([Et4N]6a) were determined. The transmission of electronic effects through the carba-closo-dodecaboron cage was studied based on (13)C NMR spectroscopic data, by results derived from density functional theory calculations, and by a comparison to the data of related benzene and bicyclo[2.2.2]octane derivatives.
