Helicene Appended Benzothiadiazoles as Chiral Emitters

A homologous series of 4,7-bis(aryl) substituted benzothiadiazole (BTD) compounds, containing the helicenic derivatives bis([4]helicene), bis([5]helicene) and bis([6]helicene), have been prepared upon a double Suzuki coupling between 3,6-bis(pinacolyl-borane)-BTD and the corresponding bromo-aryl precursors. The single crystal X-ray structure of the bis([4]helicene) compound shows the existence of both helicities (M) and (P) on the same molecule. All the compounds of the series are highly emissive in solution, with quantum yields of the emission ranging from 50 to 91 %. The enantiopure compounds (M,M) and (P,P) for the BTD-bis([6]helicene) have been prepared from the corresponding enantiopure 2-bromo-[6]helicene precursors. Their chiroptical properties have been investigated in correlation with density functional theory (DFT) calculations, which allowed to confidently assign the absolute configuration of the helicene arms and to characterize the different electronic transitions, including the low energy charge transfer excitation from helicenes to BTD. The enantiomerically pure fluorophores (M,M)- and (P,P)-BTD-bis([6]helicene), which exist in solution as two main conformers, according to the DFT calculations, show CPL activity in solution, with glum factors of ≈1.7×10-3 at λem=525 nm, and also in the solid state, with glum factors of ≈1.2×10-3 in spite of the strong decrease of the quantum efficiency.

Time-resolved THz Stark spectroscopy of molecules in solution

For decades, it was considered all but impossible to perform Stark spectroscopy on molecules in a liquid solution, because their concomitant orientation to the applied electric field results in overwhelming background signals. A way out was to immobilize the solute molecules by freezing the solvent. While mitigating solute orientation, freezing removes the possibility to study molecules in liquid environments at ambient conditions. Here we demonstrate time-resolved THz Stark spectroscopy, utilizing intense single-cycle terahertz pulses as electric field source. At THz frequencies, solute molecules have no time to orient their dipole moments. Hence, dynamic Stark spectroscopy on the time scales of molecular vibrations or rotations in both non-polar and polar solvents at arbitrary temperatures is now possible. We verify THz Stark spectroscopy for two judiciously selected molecular systems and compare the results to conventional Stark spectroscopy and first principle calculations.

High pressure behaviour of the organic semiconductor salt (TTF-BTD)2I3

This study focuses on the effect of structure compression and cooling on the stereoelectronic properties of the planar π-conjugated TTF-BTD (TTF = tetrathiafulvalene; BTD = 2,1,3-benzothiadiazole) molecule, a prototypical example in which an electron-donor moiety is compactly annulated to an electron-acceptor moiety. Its partially oxidised iodine salt (TTF-BTD)2I3 is a crystalline semiconductor featuring segregated columns of TTF+0.5 units stacked via alternating short and long π-π interactions. We studied TTF-BTD at temperatures ranging from 300 K to 90 K and at pressures up to 7.5 GPa, using both X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy to determine the properties of the compressed samples. Periodic DFT calculations and several theoretical tools were employed to characterize the calculated structural modifications and to predict the structural changes up to 60 GPa. The existence of an unprecedented new phase is predicted above 20 GPa, following a covalent bond formation between two neighbouring TTF-BTD units.

Photoinduced asymmetric charge trapping in a symmetric tetraazapyrene-fused bis(tetrathiafulvalene) conjugate

In fused donor-acceptor (D-A) ensembles, rapid charge recombination often occurs because the D and A units are spatially close and strongly coupled. To the best of our knowledge, a long-lived charge separated (CS) state is still elusive in such systems. The results presented here show that symmetric annulation of two tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) donors to a central tetraazapyrene (TAP) acceptor via two quinoxaline units leads to a CS state lifetime of a few ns. A detailed study of the electronic interactions between TTF and TAP units in the ground and excited states was performed and compared with the asymmetric counterpart by cyclic voltammetry, optical absorption and ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy. The results demonstrate that the photoinduced asymmetric charge trapping between two TTFs significantly stabilizes the CS state, which is also verified theoretically.

Dithiol-Activated Bioorthogonal Chemistry for Endoplasmic Reticulum-Targeted Synergistic Chemophototherapy

The controlled intracellular release of nitrite is still an unmet challenge due to the lack of bio-friendly donors, and the antitumor effect of nitrite is limited by its physiologically inert activity. Herein, we designed benzothiadiazole-based organic nitrite donors that are stable against bio-relevant species but selectively respond to dithiol species through S_N Ar/intramolecular cyclization tandem reactions in the aqueous media. The bioorthogonal system was established to target the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) of liver cancer HepG2 cells. The nitrite and nonivamide were coupled to induce elevation of intracellular levels of calcium ions as well as reactive oxygen/nitrogen species, which resulted in ER stress and mitochondrial dysfunction. We demonstrated that a combination of photoactivation and "click to release" strategy could enhance antitumor effect in cellular level and show good potential for cancer precision therapy.

Fluorescent Benzothiadiazole Derivatives as Fluorescence Imaging Dyes: A Decade of New Generation Probes

The current review describes advances in the use of fluorescent 2,1,3-benzothiadiazole (BTD) derivatives after nearly one decade since the first description of bioimaging experiments using this class of fluorogenic dyes. The review describes the use of BTD-containing fluorophores applied as, inter alia, bioprobes for imaging cell nuclei, mitochondria, lipid droplets, sensors, markers for proteins and related events, biological processes and activities, lysosomes, plasma membranes, multicellular models, and animals. A number of physicochemical and photophysical properties commonly observed for BTD fluorogenic structures are also described.

Optically Controlled Electron Transfer in a ReI Complex

Ultrafast optical control of intramolecular charge flow was demonstrated, which paves the way for photocurrent modulation and switching with a highly wavelength-selective ON/OFF ratio. The system that was explored is a fac-[Re(CO)₃ (TTF-DPPZ)Cl] complex, where TTF-DPPZ=4',5'-bis(propylthio)tetrathiafulvenyl[i]dipyrido[3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine. DFT calculations and AC-Stark spectroscopy confirmed the presence of two distinct optically active charge-transfer processes, namely a metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) and an intra-ligand charge transfer (ILCT). Ultrafast transient absorption measurements showed that the ILCT state decays in the ps regime. Upon excitation to the MLCT state, only a long-lived ³ MLCT state was observed after 80 ps. Remarkably, however, the bleaching of the ILCT absorption band remained as a result of the effective inhibition of the HOMO-LUMO transition.

Dimensionality Control in Crystalline Zinc(II) and Silver(I) Complexes with Ditopic Benzothiadiazole-Dipyridine Ligands

Three 2,1,3-benzothiadiazole-based ligands decorated with two pyridyl groups, 4,7-di(2-pyridyl)-2,1,3-benzothiadiazol (2-PyBTD), 4,7-di(3-pyridyl)-2,1,3-benzothiadiazol (3-PyBTD) and 4,7-di(4-pyridyl)-2,1,3 benzothiadiazol (4-PyBTD), generate ZnII and AgI complexes with a rich structural variety: [Zn(hfac)2(2-PyBTD)] 1, [Zn2(hfac)4(2-PyBTD)] 2, [Ag(CF3SO3)(2-PyBTD)]23, [Ag(2-PyBTD)]2(SbF6)24, [Ag2(NO3)2(2-PyBTD)(CH3CN)] 5, [Zn(hfac)2(3-PyBTD)] 6, [Zn(hfac)2(4-PyBTD)] 7, [ZnCl2(4-PyBTD)2] 8 and [ZnCl2(4-PyBTD)] 9 (hfac = hexafluoroacetylacetonato). The nature of the resulting complexes (discrete species or coordination polymers) is influenced by the relative position of the pyridyl nitrogen atoms, the nature of the starting metal precursors, as well as by the synthetic conditions. Compounds 1 and 8 are mononuclear and 2, 3 and 4 are binuclear species. Compounds 6, 7 and 9 are 1D coordination polymers, while compound 5 is a 2D coordination polymer, the metal ions being bridged by 2-PyBTD and nitrato ligands. The solid-state architectures are sustained by intermolecular π–π stacking interactions established between the pyridyl group and the benzene ring from the benzothiadiazol moiety. Compounds 1, 2, 7–9 show luminescence in the visible range. Density Functional Theory (DFT) and Time Dependent Density Functional Theory (TD-DFT) calculations have been performed on the ZnII complexes 1 and 2 in order to disclose the nature of the electronic transitions and to have an insight on the modulation of the photophysical properties upon complexation.

Dipole Moment and Polarizability of Tunable Intramolecular Charge Transfer States in Heterocyclic π-Conjugated Molecular Dyads Determined by Computational and Stark Spectroscopic Study

The annulation of two redox-active molecules into a compact and planar structure paves the way toward a new class of electronically versatile materials whose physical properties can be tuned via a substitution of one of the constituting moieties. Specifically, we present tetrathiafulvalene-benzothiadiazole donor-acceptor molecules. The critical role played by the dielectric properties of these molecules is evident by the large spectral shifts of the ground-state absorption spectra in a range of solvents. Stark spectroscopy is performed to determine experimentally dipole and polarizability change over transitions in the visible range with particular attention to the transition from the highest-occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) to the lowest-unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO). The experimental results are compared to the results of time-dependent density functional theory calculations, and we reciprocally validate results from calculation and experiment. This allows us to filter out effective models and reveal important insights. The calculations are initially performed in the gas phase and subsequently a polarizable continuum model is adopted to probe the influence of the solvent on the molecular dielectric properties. The results show a large charge displacement from the HOMO to the LUMO and confirm the intramolecular charge transfer nature of the lowest-energy transition. Substitution of the acceptor moiety with electron-withdrawing groups results in changes to the experimentally determined molecular properties consistent with the effects predicted by computational results. The dominant contribution to the electroabsorption signal is due to the change in dipole moment, which is measured to be roughly 20 D for all samples and forms a small angle with the transition dipole moment in a toluene solvent environment.

Triggering Emission with the Helical Turn in Thiadiazole-Helicenes

Introduction of heterocycles into the helical skeleton of helicenes allows modulation of their redox, chiroptical, and photophysical properties. This paper describes the straightforward preparation and structural characterization by single-crystal X-ray diffraction of thiadiazole-[7]helicene, which was resolved into M and P enantiomers by chiral HPLC, together with its S-shaped double [4]helicene isomer, as well as the smaller congeners thiadiazole-[5]helicene and benzothiadiazole-anthracene. A copper(II) complex with two thiadiazole-[5]helicene ligands was structurally characterized, and it shows the presence of both M and P isomers coordinated to the metal center. The emission properties of the heterohelicenes are highly dependent on the helical turn, as the [7]- and [5]helicene are poorly emissive, whereas their isomers, that is, the S-shaped double [4]helicene and thiadiazole-benzanthracene, are luminescent, with quantum efficiencies of 5.4 and 6.5 %, respectively. DFT calculations suggest quenching of the luminescence of enantiopure [7]helicenes through an intersystem-crossing mechanism arising from the relaxed excited S1 state.

Synthesis, properties and surface self-assembly of a pentanuclear cluster based on the new π-conjugated TTF-triazole ligand

The new π-extended redox-active ligand with both TTF and triazole units, 6-(4,5-bis(propylthio)-1,3-dithiol-2-ylidene)-1H-[1,3]dithiolo[4′,5′:4,5]benzo [1,2-d] [1–3]triazole, has been successfully prepared. Based on the versatile ligand and Cu(tta)₂ precursors (tta⁻ = 4,4,4-trifluoro-1-(thiophen-2-yl)butane-1,3-dione), a TTF-based pentanuclear Cu^II cluster (Cu₅(tta)₄(TTFN₃)₆) is synthesized and structurally characterized. Their absorption and electrochemical properties are investigated. Antiferromagnetic couplings are operative between metal ion centers bridged by triazoles in the complex. The self-assembled structure of the cluster complex on a highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) surface was observed using scanning tunneling microscopy and density functional theory (DFT) calculations have been performed to provide insight into the formation mechanism. The introduction of the redox-active TTF unit into the cluster complexes with interesting magnetic properties renders them promising candidates for new multifunctional materials.

Exploring the electronic structure of an organic semiconductor based on a compactly fused electron donor-acceptor molecule

A Mott-type semiconductor based on a compactly fused and partially oxidized electron donor-acceptor (D-A) molecule was recently prepared and identified to exhibit a large room-temperature conductivity of 2 S cm(-1) . In a marked contrast to the organic conductors characterized by relatively well decoupled and segregated uniform stacks of D and A moieties, the formally half-oxidized tetrathiafulvalene donors of the actual compound are organized in columnar π stacks only, whereby the coplanar electron-acceptor units, namely benzothiadiazole, are closely annulated along their ridges. Herein, we present a theoretical study that explores the electronic structure of this novel type of organic semiconductor. The highly symmetric-solid state material behaves as a one-dimensional electronic system with strong antiferromagnetic interactions (coupling constant>200 cm(-1) ). The unique shape and local dipole of this redox-active fused electron D-A molecule lays the basis for further investigations of the collective electronic structure, mainly in the function of different counterions embedded in the crystalline lattice.

HOMO stabilisation in π-extended dibenzotetrathiafulvalene derivatives for their application in organic field-effect transistors

Three new organic semiconductors, in which either two methoxy units are directly linked to a dibenzotetrathiafulvalene (DB-TTF) central core and a 2,1,3-chalcogendiazole is fused on the one side, or four methoxy groups are linked to the DB-TTF, have been synthesised as active materials for organic field-effect transistors (OFETs). Their electrochemical behaviour, electronic absorption and fluorescence emission as well as photoinduced intramolecular charge transfer were studied. The electron-withdrawing 2,1,3-chalcogendiazole unit significantly affects the electronic properties of these semiconductors, lowering both the HOMO and LUMO energy levels and hence increasing the stability of the semiconducting material. The solution-processed single-crystal transistors exhibit high performance with a hole mobility up to 0.04 cm(2)  V(-1)  s(-1) as well as good ambient stability.

Contrast formation in Kelvin probe force microscopy of single π-conjugated molecules

We report the contrast formation in the local contact potential difference (LCPD) measured by Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) on single charge-transfer complexes (CTCs) on a NaCl bilayer on Cu(111). At different tip heights, we found quantitatively different LCPD contrasts that characterize different properties of the molecule. In the small distance regime, the tip penetrates the electron density of the molecule, and the contrast is related to the size and topography of the electron shell of the molecule. For larger distances, the LCPD contrast corresponds to the electrostatic field above the molecule. However, in the medium-distance regime, that is, for tip heights similar to the size of the molecule, the nonspherical distribution of π- and σ-electrons often conceals the effect of the partial charges within the molecule. Only for large distances does the LCPD map converge toward the simple field of a dipole for a polar molecule.

A compact tetrathiafulvalene-benzothiadiazole dyad and its highly symmetrical charge-transfer salt: ordered donor π-stacks closely bound to their acceptors

A compact and planar donor-acceptor molecule 1 comprising tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) and benzothiadiazole (BTD) units has been synthesised and experimentally characterised by structural, optical, and electrochemical methods. Solution-processed and thermally evaporated thin films of 1 have also been explored as active materials in organic field-effect transistors (OFETs). For these devices, hole field-effect mobilities of μFE = (1.3±0.5)×10(-3) and (2.7±0.4)×10(-3)  cm(2)  V s(-1) were determined for the solution-processed and thermally evaporated thin films, respectively. An intense intramolecular charge-transfer (ICT) transition at around 495 nm dominates the optical absorption spectrum of the neutral dyad, which also shows a weak emission from its ICT state. The iodine-induced oxidation of 1 leads to a partially oxidised crystalline charge-transfer (CT) salt {(1)2I3}, and eventually also to a fully oxidised compound {1I3}⋅1/2I2. Single crystals of the former CT compound, exhibiting a highly symmetrical crystal structure, reveal a fairly good room temperature electrical conductivity of the order of 2 S cm(-1). The one-dimensional spin system bears compactly bonded BTD acceptors (spatial localisation of the LUMO) along its ridge.

A highly sensitive TTF-functionalised probe for the determination of physiological thiols and its application in tumor cells
