Abstract
A series of iso-carbamate complexes have been synthesized by the reaction of [SnII(OiPr)2] or [SnII(OtBu)2] with either aryl or alkyl isocyanates, ONC-R (R = 2,4,6-trimethylphenyl (Mes), 2,6-diisopropylphenyl (Dipp), isopropyl (iPr), cyclohexyl (Cy) and tert-butyl (tBu)). In the case of aryl isocyanates, mono-insertion occurs to form structurally characterized complexes [Sn{κ2-N,O-R-NC(OiPr)O}(μ-OiPr)]2 (1: R = Mes, 2: R = Dipp) and [Sn{κ2-N,O-R-NC(OtBu)O}(μ-OtBu)]2 (3: R = Mes, 4: R = Dipp). The complicated solution-state chemistry of these species has been explored using 1H DOSY experiments. In contrast, reactions of tin(II) alkoxides with alkyl isocyanates result in the formation of bis-insertion products [Sn{κ2-N,O-R-NC(OiPr)O}2] (5: R = iPr, and 6: R = Cy) and [Sn{κ2-N,O-R-NC(OtBu)O}2] (7: R = iPr, 8: R = Cy), of which complexes 6-8 have also been structurally characterized. 1H NMR studies show that the reaction of tBu-NCO with either [Sn(OiPr)2] or [Sn(OtBu)2] results in a reversible mono-insertion. Variable-temperature 2D 1H-1H exchange spectroscopy (VT-2D-EXSY) was used to determine the rate of exchange between free tBu-NCO and the coordinated tBu-iso-carbamate ligand for the {OiPr} alkoxide complex, as well as the activation energy (Ea = 92.2 ± 0.8 kJ mol-1), enthalpy (ΔH‡ = 89.4 ± 0.8 kJ mol-1), and entropy (ΔS‡ = 12.6 ± 2.9 J mol-1 K-1) for the process [Sn(OiPr)2] + tBu-NCO ↔ [Sn{κ2-N,O-tBu-NC(OiPr)O}(OiPr)]. Attempts to form Sn(II) alkyl carbonates by the insertion of CO2 into either [Sn(OiPr)2] or [Sn(OtBu)2] proved unsuccessful. However, 119Sn{1H} NMR spectroscopy of the reaction of excess CO2 with [Sn(OiPr)2] reveals the presence of a new Sn(II) species, i.e., [(iPrO)Sn(O2COiPr)], VT-2D-EXSY (1H) of which confirms the reversible alkyl carbonate formation (Ea = 70.3 ± 13.0 kJ mol-1; ΔH‡ = 68.0 ± 1.3 kJ mol-1 and ΔS‡ = -8.07 ± 2.8 J mol-1 K-1).

Abstract
This review describes recent advances in the synthesis of homopolymers of lactide and related cyclic esters via ring-opening polymerization (ROP) in the presence of metal complexes based on group 1, 2, 4, 12, 13 and 14 metals. Particular attention is paid to the influence of the initiator structure on the properties of the obtaining homo- and copolymers. Also, a separate chapter is devoted to the study of metal complexes in the synthesis of copolymers of lactide and lactones. This review highlights the efforts made over the last ten years or so, and shows how main-group metals have received increasing attention in the field of the polymerization of lactide and related cyclic esters.

Abstract
Poly(l-lactic acid) (PLLA) is a leading commercial polymer produced from biomass, showing useful properties for plastics and fiber applications; after use, it is compostable. One area for improvement is postconsumer waste PLLA chemical recycling to monomer (CRM), i.e., the formation of l-lactide (l-LA) from waste plastic. This process is currently feasible at high reaction temperatures and shows low catalytic activity accompanied, in some cases, by side reactions, including epimerization. Here, a commercial Sn(II) catalyst, applied with nonvolatile commercial alcohol, enables highly efficient CRM of PLLA to yield l-LA in excellent yield and purity (92% yield, >99% l-LA from theoretical max.). The depolymerization is performed using neat polymer films at low temperatures (160 °C) under a nitrogen flow or vacuum. The chemical recycling operates with outstanding activity, achieving turnover frequencies which are up to 3000× higher than previously excellent catalysts and applied at loadings up to 6000× lower than previously leading catalysts. The catalyst system achieves a TOF = 3000 h-1 at 0.01 mol % or 1:10,000 catalyst:PLLA loading. The depolymerization of waste PLLA plastic packaging (coffee cup lids) produces pure l-LA in excellent yield and selectivity. The new catalyst system (Sn + alcohol) can itself be recycled four times in different PLLA "batch degradations" and maintains its high catalytic productivity, activity, and selectivity.

Abstract
Density functional theory (DFT) simulations of ring-opening copolymerization of ε-caprolactone (CL) and L-lactide (LA) in presence of novel gallium complex on aminobis (phenolate) ligand are conducted. The initial steps of polymerization of CL and LA as well as the first steps of propagation which led to LGa-LA-LA-OMe, LGa-LA-CL-OMe, LGa-CL-LA-OMe, or LGa-CL-CL-OMe derivatives have been analyzed in detail. According to these data, the studied catalyst is a rare example of a catalyst in which, during copolymerization, the polymerization of CL should proceed faster than LA. Thus, we predict the formation of a mainly block copolymer poly(CL-block-LA) using this catalyst.

Abstract
A new series of tin(II) complexes (1, 2, 4, and 5) were successfully synthesized by employing hydroxy functionalized pyridine ligands, specifically 2-hydroxypyridine (hpH), 8-hydroxyquinoline (hqH), and 10-hydroxybenzo[h]quinoline (hbqH) as stabilizing ligands. Complexes [Sn(μ-κ2ON-OC5H4N)(N{SiMe3}2)]2 (1) and [Sn4(μ-κ2ON-OC5H4N)6(κ1O-OC5H4N)2] (2) are the first structurally characterized examples of tin(II) oxypyridinato complexes exhibiting {Sn2(OCN)2} heterocyclic cores. As part of our study, 1H DOSY NMR experiments were undertaken using an external calibration curve (ECC) approach, with temperature-independent normalized diffusion coefficients, to determine the nature of oligomerisation of 2 in solution. An experimentally determined diffusion coefficient (298 K) of 6.87 × 10−10 m2 s−1 corresponds to a hydrodynamic radius of Ca. 4.95 Å. This is consistent with the observation of an averaged hydrodynamic radii and equilibria between dimeric [Sn{hp}2]2 and tetrameric [Sn{hp}2]4 species at 298 K. Testing this hypothesis, 1H DOSY NMR experiments were undertaken at regular intervals between 298 K–348 K and show a clear change in the calculated hydrodynamic radii form 4.95 Å (298 K) to 4.35 Å (348 K) consistent with a tetramer ⇄ dimer equilibria which lies towards the dimeric species at higher temperatures. Using these data, thermodynamic parameters for the equilibrium (ΔH° = 70.4 (±9.22) kJ mol−1, ΔS° = 259 (±29.5) J K−1 mol−1 and ΔG°298 = −6.97 (±12.7) kJ mol−1) were calculated. In the course of our studies, the Sn(II) oxo cluster, [Sn6(m3-O)6(OR)4:{Sn(II)(OR)2}2] (3) (R = C5H4N) was serendipitously isolated, and its molecular structure was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. However, attempts to characterise the complex by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy were thwarted by solubility issues, and attempts to synthesise 3 on a larger scale were unsuccessful. In contrast to the oligomeric structures observed for 1 and 2, single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies unambiguously establish the monomeric 4-coordinate solid-state structures of [Sn(κ2ON-OC9H6N)2)] (4) and [Sn(κ2ON-OC13H8N)2)] (5).

Abstract
Poly(ester-alt-ethers) can combine beneficial ether linkage flexibility and polarity with ester linkage hydrolysability, furnishing fully degradable polymers. Despite their promising properties, this class of polymers remains underexplored, in part due to difficulties in polymer synthesis. Here, a catalyzed copolymerization using commercially available monomers, butylene oxide (BO)/oxetane (OX), tetrahydrofuran (THF), and phthalic anhydride (PA), accesses a series of well-defined poly(ester-alt-ethers). A Zr(IV) catalyst is reported that yields polymer repeat units comprising a ring-opened PA (A), followed by two ring-opened cyclic ethers (B/C) (-ABB- or -ABC-). It operates with high polymerization control, good rate, and successfully enchains epoxides, oxetane, and/or tetrahydrofurans, providing a straightforward means to moderate the distance between ester linkages. Kinetic analysis of PA/BO copolymerization, with/without THF, reveals an overall second-order rate law: first order in both catalyst and butylene oxide concentrations but zero order in phthalic anhydride and, where it is present, zero order in THF. Poly(ester-alt-ethers) have lower glass-transition temperatures (-16 °C < Tg < 12 °C) than the analogous alternating polyesters, consistent with the greater backbone flexibility. They also show faster ester hydrolysis rates compared with the analogous AB polymers. The Zr(IV) catalyst furnishes poly(ester-alt-ethers) from a range of commercially available epoxides and anhydride; it presents a straightforward method to moderate degradable polymers' properties.

Abstract
A family of pyridine dipyrrolide bismuth complexes (Mes,PhL)MX (1-6) (M = Bi, X = O-2,6-Me-C6H3 = OXyl (1); M = Sb, X = OXyl (2); M = Bi, X = O-2,6-iPr-C6H3 = ODipp (3), O-2,6-tBu-C6H3 = OArtBu (4), OtBu (5) and OCMe2Et = OAm (6), N(SiMe3)2 = N'' (7) and CH2Ph (8)) have been prepared and investigated as initiators for the ring-opening polymerisation of lactide monomers. Bismuth lactate complexes (Mes,PhL)Bi{OC(H)(Me)C(O)OR} were prepared as models for the propagating species (R = tBu (9), Me (10), iPr (11)). The first insertion of the lactide monomer is rate limiting and the second and subsequent insertions are more rapid (kinit ≪ kLA2 < kprop), leading to a significant induction period. The sterically demanding, rigid pincer ligand affords a well-defined coordination environment at the metal centre and allows for the enchainment of two lactide monomers to be differentiated spectroscopically ((Mes,PhL)Bi{OC(H)(Me)C(O)}4OX (12-X)), with this species also implied to be the true initiator for the regime of propagation with first order kinetics. Well-controlled first order kinetic data for the polymerisation of L-, D-, rac- and meso-lactide are observed.

Abstract
Sustainable plastics sourced without virgin petrochemicals, that are easily recyclable and with potential for degradation at end of life, are urgently needed. Here, copolymersand blends meeting these criteria are efficiently prepared using a single catalyst and existing commercial monomers l-lactide, propylene oxide, and maleic anhydride. The selective, one-reactor polymerization applies an industry-relevant tin(II) catalyst. Tapered, miscible block polyesters are formed with alkene groups which are postfunctionalized to modulate the polymer glass transition temperature. The polymers are blended at desirable low weight fractions (2 wt %) with commercial poly(l-lactide) (PLLA), increasing toughness, and elongation at break without compromising the elastic modulus, tensile strength, or thermal properties. The selective polymerization catalysis, using commercial monomers and catalyst, provides a straightforward means to improve bioplastics performances.

Abstract
Two manganese(III) compounds were studied as catalysts for the reaction of carbon dioxide with propylene oxide, styrene oxide, and cyclohexene oxide, and formed cyclic carbonate products selectively under solvent free conditions in the presence of an ionic co-catalyst such as TBAB or PPNCl. Variable temperature kinetic studies allowed the activation energy for propylene carbonate formation to be determined (64 kJ mol−1). The catalysts showed good stability in these reactions and overall turnover numbers (TON) of up to 6000 were observed. The complexes showed low activity for the aerobic oxidation of 4-methyoxybenzylalcohol to the corresponding aldehyde, achieving up to 40% conversion in 72 h. However, near quantitative conversion of 1,2-diphenyl-2-methoxyethanol to provide up to 90% yield of benzaldehyde could be achieved over the course of 5 days. Both complexes showed similar reactivity in the two catalytic processes, and this is likely due to the weakly coordinating nature of the pendant donor within the tetradentate ligand.

Abstract
Ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of cyclic esters (lactones, lactides, cyclic carbonates and phosphates) is an effective tool to synthesize biocompatible and biodegradable polymers. Metal complexes effectively catalyze ROP, a remarkable diversity of the ROP mechanisms prompted the use of density functional theory (DFT) methods for simulation and visualization of the ROP pathways. Optimization of the molecular structures of the key reaction intermediates and transition states has allowed to explain the values of catalytic activities and stereocontrol events. DFT computation data sets might be viewed as a sound basis for the design of novel ROP catalysts and cyclic substrates, for the creation of new types of homo- and copolymers with promising properties. In this review, we summarized the results of DFT modeling of coordination ROP of cyclic esters. The importance to understand the difference between initiation and propagation stages, to consider the possibility of polymer-catalyst coordination, to figure out the key transition states, and other aspects of DFT simulation and visualization of ROP have been also discussed in our review.

Abstract
Catalytic ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of cyclic esters (lactides, lactones) and cyclic ethylene phosphates is an effective way to process materials with regulated hydrophilicity and controlled biodegradability. Random copolymers of cyclic monomers of different chemical nature are highly attractive due to their high variability of characteristics. Aryloxy-alkoxy complexes of non-toxic metals such as derivatives of 2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-methylphenoxy magnesium (BHT-Mg) complexes are effective coordination catalysts for homopolymerization of all types of traditional ROP monomers. In the present paper, we report the results of density functional theory (DFT) modeling of BHT-Mg-catalyzed copolymerization for lactone/lactide, lactone/ethylene phosphate and lactide/ethylene phosphate mixtures. ε-Caprolactone (ε-CL), l-lactide (l-LA) and methyl ethylene phosphate (MeOEP) were used as examples of monomers in DFT simulations by the Gaussian-09 program package with the B3PW91/DGTZVP basis set. Both binuclear and mononuclear reaction mechanistic concepts have been applied for the calculations of the reaction profiles. The results of calculations predict the possibility of the formation of random copolymers based on l-LA/MeOEP, and substantial hindrance of copolymerization for ε-CL/l-LA and ε-CL/MeOEP pairs. From the mechanistic point of view, the formation of highly stable five-membered chelate by the products of l-LA ring-opening and high donor properties of phosphates are the key factors that rule the reactions. The results of DFT modeling have been confirmed by copolymerization experiments.

Abstract
Density functional theory (DFT) is employed to characterize in detail the mechanism for the ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of ε-caprolactone catalyzed by iron alkoxide complexes bearing redox-active bis(imino)pyridine ligands. The combination of iron with the non-innocent bis(imino)pyridine ligand permits comparison of catalytic activity as a function of oxidation state (and overall spin state). The reactivities of aryl oxide versus alkoxide initiators for the ROP of ε-caprolactone are also examined. An experimental test of a computational prediction reveals an Fe(III) bis(imino)pyridine bis-neopentoxide complex to be competent for ROP of ε-caprolactone.

Abstract
The synthesis of up to pentablock copolymers from various combinations of l-lactide and trimethylene carbonate was accomplished using a dinuclear zinc complex, and the physical, thermal, and mechanical properties of the resulting copolymers evaluated.
Poly(l-lactide) (PLA) is a bioderived and biodegradable polymer that has limited applications due to its hard and brittle nature. Incorporation of 1,3-trimethylene carbonate into PLA, in a block copolymer fashion, improves the mechanical properties, while retaining the biodegradability of the polymer, and broadens its range of applications. However, the preparation of 1,3-trimethylene carbonate (TMC)/l-lactide (LA) copolymers beyond diblock and triblock structures has not been reported, with explanations focusing mostly on thermodynamic reasons that impede the copolymerization of TMC after lactide. We discuss the preparation of multiblock copolymers via the ring opening polymerization (ROP) of LA and TMC, in a step-wise addition, by a ferrocene-chelating heteroscorpionate zinc complex, {[fc(PPh2)(BH[(3,5-Me)2pz]2)]Zn(μ-OCH2Ph)}2 ([(fcP,B)Zn(μ-OCH2Ph)]2, fc = 1,1′-ferrocenediyl, pz = pyrazole). The synthesis of up to pentablock copolymers, from various combinations of LA and TMC, was accomplished and the physical, thermal, and mechanical properties of the resulting copolymers evaluated.

Abstract
We report here a unique example of an in situ generated aluminum initiator stabilized by a C2-symmetric salen ligand which shows a hitherto unknown high activity for the ROP of rac-lactide at room temperature. Using a simple and robust catalyst system, which is prepared from a salen complex and an onium salt, this convenient route employs readily available reagents that afford polylactide in good yields with narrow polydispersity indices, without the need for time-consuming and expensive processes that are typically required for catalyst preparation and purification. In line with the experimental evidence, DFT studies reveal that initiation and propagation proceed via an external alkoxide attack on the coordinated monomer.

Abstract
A series of monomeric zinc silylamido complexes bearing [NNNO]-type tetradentate aminophenolate ligands, LZnN(SiMe3)2 [L = {(2-R(1))ArCH2N[(CH2)2R(2)]CH2(4-R(4)-6-R(3))C6H2O-}, R(1) = NMe2, R(2) = N(i)Pr2, R(3) = R(4) = Cl (1), R(3) = R(4) = cumyl (3); R(1) = NMe2, R(2) = NEt2, R(3) = R(4) = cumyl (2), R(3) = CPh3, R(4) = Me (4); R(1) = NEt2, R(2) = NEt2, R(3) = CPh3, R(4) = Me (5); R(1) = NMe2, R(2) = (S)-1-butylpyrrolidin-2-yl, R(3) = R(4) = cumyl (6), R(3) = CPh3, R(4) = Me (7)], have been synthesized via reactions of Zn[N(SiMe3)2]2 and 1 equiv of the corresponding aminophenols. The monomeric nature and versatile coordination patterns of these complexes in the solid state were further confirmed by X-ray diffraction studies on complexes 2, 3, 5, and 7. In complex 3, the N,N-diisopropylamino group on the pendant side arm does not coordinate to the metal center; only the remaining three donors of the aminophenolate ligand and the silylamido group interact with the zinc center. By contrast, in complexes 2, 5, and 7, the amino group of the aryl moiety does not coordinate to the metal center, while the amino group on the pendant side arm coordinates. At room temperature, the above-mentioned structural features of these complexes are retained in solution, as confirmed by (1)H NMR spectroscopy. Complexes 1-7 proved to be efficient initiators for the ring-opening polymerization of rac-lactide (rac-LA) at ambient temperature, and the polymerizations were better controlled in the presence of 2-propanol. The coordination pattern of the aminophenolate ligand exerted a significant influence on the stereoselectivity of the corresponding complex toward the polymerization of rac-LA, leading to the production of heterotactic biased polylactides (PLAs) by complexes 1 and 3 (Pm = 0.40-0.46) and moderately to highly isotactic PLAs by complexes 2 and 4-7 (Pm = 0.70-0.81). Detailed kinetic investigations revealed a first-order dependence on the monomer concentration for all complexes and different orders in the initiator concentration ranging from 1.78 to 1.81. The nature of the solvent as well as the molar ratio of the zinc complex and 2-propanol also displayed certain influence on the order of rac-LA polymerization in the initiator concentration. Factional orders of 1.80, 1.38, and 1.11 were obtained by using complex 5/(i)PrOH (1:1) in toluene and tetrahydrofuran and complex 5/(i)PrOH (1:2) in toluene, respectively. On the basis of DOSY and (1)H and (13)C NMR studies of zinc alkoxide model complexes "LZn(OCMe2COOMe)" as well as the fractional orders of 1.78-1.81 in the initiator concentration, activation/insertion processes likely involving more than one monomeric active species were then hypothesized.
