Abstract
Metal complexes used as sensitisers in dye-sensitised solar cells (DSCs) are conventionally constructed using a push-pull strategy with electron-releasing and electron-withdrawing (anchoring) ligands. In a new paradigm we have designed new DπA ligands incorporating diarylaminophenyl donor substituents and phosphonic acid anchoring groups. These new ligands function as organic dyes. For two separate classes of DπA ligands with 2,2'-bipyridine metal-binding domains, the DSCs containing the copper(i) complexes [Cu(DπA)2]+ perform better than the push-pull analogues [Cu(DD)(AA)]+. Furthermore, we have shown for the first time that the complexes [Cu(DπA)2]+ perform better than the organic DπA dye in DSCs. The synthetic studies and the device performances are rationalised with the aid of density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) studies.

Abstract
Transition Metal Complexes (TMCs) are known for the rich variety of their excited states showing different nature and degrees of locality. Describing the energies of these excited states with the same degree of accuracy is still problematic when using time-dependent density functional theory in conjunction with the most current density functional approximations. In particular, the presence of unphysically low lying excited states possessing a relevant Charge Transfer (CT) character may significantly affect the spectra computed at such a level of theory and, more relevantly, the interpretation of their photophysical behavior. In this work, we propose an improved version of the MAC index, recently proposed by the authors and collaborators, as a simple and computationally inexpensive diagnostic tool that can be used for the detection and correction of the unphysically predicted low lying excited states. The analysis, performed on five prototype TMCs, shows that spurious and ghost states can appear in a wide spectral range and that it is difficult to detect them only on the basis of their CT extent. Indeed, both delocalization of the excited state and CT extent are criteria that must be combined, as in the MAC index, to detect unphysical states.

Abstract
Conjugated poly-ynes and poly(metalla-ynes) constitute an important class of new materials with potential application in various domains of science. The key factors responsible for the diverse usage of these materials is their intriguing and tunable chemical and photophysical properties. This review highlights fascinating advances made in the field of conjugated organic poly-ynes and poly(metalla-ynes) incorporating group 4-11 metals. This includes several important aspects of conjugated poly-ynes viz. synthetic protocols, bonding, electronic structure, nature of luminescence, structure-property relationships, diverse applications, and concluding remarks. Furthermore, we delineated the future directions and challenges in this particular area of research.

Abstract
Photovoltaic generation has stepped up within the last decade from outsider status to one of the important contributors of the ongoing energy transition, with about 1.7% of world electricity provided by solar cells. Progress in materials and production processes has played an important part in this development. Yet, there are many challenges before photovoltaics could provide clean, abundant, and cheap energy. Here, we review this research direction, with a focus on the results obtained within a Japan-French cooperation program, NextPV, working on promising solar cell technologies. The cooperation was focused on efficient photovoltaic devices, such as multijunction, ultrathin, intermediate band, and hot-carrier solar cells, and on printable solar cell materials such as colloidal quantum dots.

Abstract
The present work describes the one-pot synthesis and electrochemical, photophysical and second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of a series of dipolar π-delocalized Ru(ii) dialkynyl complexes. The eight new asymmetrical D-π-Ru-π-A push-pull chromophores incorporate pyranylidene ligands as pro-aromatic donor groups (D) and formaldehyde, indane-1,3-dione, pyrimidine or pyrimidinium as electron-attracting groups (A) separated by ruthenium bis-acetylide fragments and π-conjugated linkers. The second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of all eight complexes were determined by the Electric-Field-Induced Second Harmonic generation (EFISH) technique (operating at 1907 nm), and were compared to those of their purely organic analogs. All investigated compounds (organic and organometallic) exhibited positive μβ values, which dramatically increased for the complexes due to the presence of ruthenium in the π-conjugated core. The second-order NLO response could also be easily modulated by changing the nature of alkynyl substituents. The most promising ruthenium complexes 7 and 8 of the series with the pyrimidinium fragment displayed μβ values of 14 000 × 10-48 esu. The effect of structural modifications on the redox and spectroscopic properties of the complexes was also studied. The intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) occurring through the ruthenium center of the push-pull σ-dialkynyl complexes was investigated by combining experimental and theoretical data.

Abstract
Two metallo-organic dyes were synthesized and used for NiO sensitization in view of their photoelectrochemical applications. The new dyes present an original π-conjugated structure containing the [Ru(dppe)2] metal fragment with a highly delocalized allenylidene ligand on one side and a σ-alkynyl ligand bearing an electron-rich group, i.e. a thiophene or triphenylamine unit, and one or two anchoring functions on the other side. The optoelectronic, electrochemical and photoelectrochemical properties of the dyes were systematically investigated. A broad photoresponse was observed with the absorption maximum at 600 nm. The X-ray crystal structure of one precursor was obtained to elucidate the structural conformation of the organometallic complexes and theoretical calculations were performed in order to address the photophysical properties of the new dyes. These photosensitizers were further implemented in NiO-based photocathodes and tested as photocurrent generators under pertinent aqueous conditions in association with [Co(NH3)5Cl]Cl2 as an irreversible electron acceptor. The dye-sensitized photocathodes provided good photocurrent densities (40 to 60 μA cm(-2)) at neutral pH in phosphate buffer and a high stability was observed for the two dyes.
