Dopant-Free Pyrene-Based Hole Transporting Material Enables Efficient and Stable Perovskite Solar Cells

Dopant-free hole transporting materials (HTMs) is significant to the stability of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Here, we developed a novel star-shape arylamine HTM, termed Py-DB, with a pyrene core and carbon-carbon double bonds as the bridge units. Compared to the reference HTM (termed Py-C), the extension of the planar conjugation backbone endows Py-DB with typical intermolecular π-π stacking interactions and excellent solubility, resulting in improved hole mobility and film morphology. In addition, the lower HOMO energy level of the Py-DB HTM provides efficient hole extraction with reduced energy loss at the perovskite/HTM interface. Consequently, an impressive power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 24.33 % was achieved for dopant-free Py-DB-based PSCs, which is the highest PCE for dopant-free small molecular HTMs in n-i-p configured PSCs. The dopant-free Py-DB-based device also exhibits improved long-term stability, retaining over 90 % of its initial efficiency after 1000 h exposure to 25 % humidity at 60 °C. These findings provide valuable insights and approaches for the further development of dopant-free HTMs for efficient and reliable PSCs.

Modulator-Dependent Dynamics Synergistically Enabled Record SO2 Uptake in Zr(IV) Metal-Organic Frameworks Based on Pyrene-Cored Molecular Quadripod Ligand

Developing innovative porous solid sorbents for the capture and storage of toxic SO2 is crucial for energy-efficient transportation and subsequent processing. Nonetheless, the quest for high-performance SO2 sorbents, characterized by exceptional uptake capacity, minimal regeneration energy requirements, and outstanding recyclability under ambient conditions, remains a significant challenge. In this study, we present the design of a unique tertiary amine-embedded, pyrene-based quadripod-shaped ligand. This ligand is then assembled into a highly porous Zr-metal-organic framework (MOF) denoted as Zr-TPA, which exhibits a newly discovered 3,4,8-c woy net structure. Remarkably, our Zr-TPA MOF achieved an unprecedented SO2 sorption capacity of 22.7 mmol g-1 at 298 K and 1 bar, surpassing those of all previously reported solid sorbents. We elucidated the distinct SO2 sorption behaviors observed in isostructural Zr-TPA variants synthesized with different capping modulators (formate, acetate, benzoate, and trifluoroacetate, abbreviated as FA, HAc, BA, and TFA, respectively) through computational analyses. These analyses revealed unexpected SO2-induced modulator-node dynamics, resulting in transient chemisorption that enhanced synergistic SO2 sorption. Additionally, we conducted a proof-of-concept experiment demonstrating that the captured SO2 in Zr-TPA-FA can be converted in situ into a valuable pharmaceutical intermediate known as aryl N-aminosulfonamide, with a high yield and excellent recyclability. This highlights the potential of robust Zr-MOFs for storing SO2 in catalytic applications. In summary, this work contributes significantly to the development of efficient SO2 solid sorbents and advances our understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying SO2 sorption in Zr-MOF materials.

The Lewis Acid Induced Formation of a Stable Diradical with an Intramolecular Ion Pairing State

A stable cross-conjugated diradical was prepared by the reaction of a donor-acceptor-donor (D-A-D) molecule with B(C₆F₅)₃. Its geometry and electronic structure were characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction, EPR spectroscopy, SQUID measurement, UV/vis spectroscopy, and DFT calculation. It has an open-shell singlet ground state with a thermally excited triplet state. It can be viewed as an intramolecular radical ion pair, and the formation mechanism is proposed as an intramolecular single electron transfer that occurs from the bis(triarylamine) donor fragment to the central dioxophenyl acceptor moiety, induced by the acidic boron atom. This work provides a Lewis acid induced approach to the formation of neutral and cross-conjugated diradicals.

Understanding Diffusional Charge Transport within a Pyrene-Based Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Framework

Electrochemically active hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) offer opportunities to study charge transport in supramolecular systems where the rate of movement of charges is dependent on weak electronic coupling between individual components. Here, we used potential-step chronoamperometric measurements on electrochemically active, drop-cast HOF-102 films to estimate both redox-hopping-based apparent diffusion coefficients for charge transport and rate constants for linker-to-linker charge transfer (hole transfer) in the mesoporous two-dimensional (2D) plane created by interlinker hydrogen bonding. Also present are one-dimensional columns formed by stacking pyrene units. However, because the HOF-102 crystallites containing these columns are oriented parallel to an underlying electrode, dynamics of charge transport (hole-transport) along the column axis, in contrast to the plane, are not directly probed by the electrochemical measurements. Furthermore, we employed electrochemical impedance spectroscopy to measure the electrical conductivity of the as-deposited films biased at various potentials. We found that both the neutral/singly oxidized and the singly oxidized/doubly oxidized pyrene linker redox couples of HOF-102 can engender hopping-based film conductivity within the 2D plane of HOF-102. Consistent with the radical cation and radical dication nature of the singly and doubly oxidized linkers, respectively, HOF-102 films are electrochromic. The measured values of in-plane charge-diffusion coefficients (∼10^-10 to 10^-11 cm² s^-1) and electrical conductivity (∼10^-6 to 10^-8 S cm^-1) compare favorably with those for related redox-conductive MOFs and suggest that the transport and conductivity parameters for HOF-102 are sufficiently large to support electrocatalysis by subsequently installed catalysts in films─specifically, films of micron or greater thickness, corresponding to the equivalent hundreds of monolayers of closely packed (i.e., face-to-face-packed) pyrene-derivatives, but with solution access (solvent, ion, and reactant access) still readily provided by channels oriented parallel to an underlying planar electrode.

Bridge-Length- and Solvent-Dependent Charge Separation and Recombination Processes in Donor-Bridge-Acceptor Molecules

The photoinduced intramolecular charge separation (CS) and charge recombination (CR) phenomena in a series of donor-bridge-acceptor (D-B-A) molecules are intensively investigated as a means of understanding electron transport through the π-B. Pyrene (Pyr) and triarylamine (TAA) moieties connected via phenylene Bs of various lengths are studied because their CS and CR behaviors can be readily monitored in real time by femtosecond transient absorption (fs-TA) spectroscopy. By combining the steady-state and fs-TA spectroscopic measurements in a variety of solvents together with chemical calculations, the parameters that govern the CS behaviors of these dyads were obtained, such as the solvent effects on free energy and the B-length-dependent electronic coupling (V_DA) between D and A. We observed the sharp switch of the CS behavior with the increase of the solvent polarity and B-linker lengths. Furthermore, in the case of the shortest distance between D and A when the electron coupling is sufficiently large, we observed that the CS phenomenon occurs even in low-polar solvents. Upon increasing the length of B, CS occurs only in strong polar solvents. The distance-dependent decay constant of the CS rate is determined as ∼0.53 Å^-1, indicating that CS is governed by superexchange tunneling interactions. The CS rate constants are also approximately estimated using Marcus electron transfer theory, and the results imply that the V_DA value is the key factor dominating the CS rate, while the facile rotation of the phenylene B is important for modulating the lifetime of the charge-separated state in these D-B-A dyads. These results shed light on the practical strategy for obtaining a high CS efficiency with a long-lived CS state in TAA-B-Pyr derivatives.

Control of Electron Transfer Processes in Multidimensional Arylamine-Based Mixed-Valence Compounds by Molecular Backbone Design

Four trigonal topology compounds with three diarylamines redox centers and dibenzofulvene as core bridge have been synthesized. Their radical cations exhibit appealing intramolecular electron transfer pathways between three redox centers, depending on their position on the core bridge. By changing such positions (on either 2,7- or 3,6-), and the length of the bridge, the control of the intramolecular electron transfer pathways was achieved through the electron self-exchange route. These processes were investigated by absorption spectroscopy, electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, and (time-dependent) density functional theory calculations. Hole mobility measurements were carried out as well, to correlate the intramolecular electron transfer with the hole-transporting ability for possible applications in optoelectronic devices.

Tetraruthenium Metallamacrocycles with Potentially Coordinating Appended Functionalities

We present four new tetraruthenium macrocycles built from two 1,4-divinylphenylene diruthenium and two isophthalic acid building blocks with peripheral, potentially mono- or tridentate donor functions attached to the isophthalic linkers. These macrocycles are characterized by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry and, in the case of the thioacetyl-appended complex 4, by X-ray crystallography. Cyclic and square wave voltammetry establish that the macrocycles can be oxidized in four consecutive redox steps that come as two pairs of two closely spaced one-electron waves. Spectroscopic changes observed during IR and UV/Vis/NIR spectroelectrochemical experiments (NIR = near infrared) show that the isophthalate linkers insulate the electroactive divinylphenylene diruthenium moieties against each other. The macrocycles exhibit nevertheless pronounced polyelectrochromism with highly intense absorptions in the Vis (2+/4+ states) and the NIR (2+ states) with extinction coefficients of up to >100,000 M−1·cm−1. The strong absorptivity enhancement with respect to the individual divinylphenylene diruthenium building blocks is attributed to conformational restrictions imposed by the macrocycle backbone. Moreover, the di- and tetracations of these macrocycles are paramagnetic as revealed by EPR spectroscopy.

Pyrene Molecular Orbital Shuffle-Controlling Excited State and Redox Properties by Changing the Nature of the Frontier Orbitals

We show that by judicious choice of substituents at the 2- and 7-positions of pyrene, the frontier orbital order of pyrene can be modified, giving enhanced control over the nature and properties of the photoexcited states and the redox potentials. Specifically, we introduced a julolidine-like moiety and Bmes₂ (mes=2,4,6-Me₃ C₆ H₂ ) as very strong donor (D) and acceptor (A), respectively, giving 2,7-D-π-D- and unsymmetric 2,7-D-π-A-pyrene derivatives, in which the donor destabilizes the HOMO-1 and the acceptor stabilizes the LUMO+1 of the pyrene core. Consequently, for 2,7-substituted pyrene derivatives, unusual properties are obtained. For example, very large bathochromic shifts were observed for all of our compounds, and unprecedented green light emission occurs for the D/D system. In addition, very high radiative rate constants in solution and in the solid state were recorded for the D-π-D- and D-π-A-substituted compounds. All compounds show reversible one-electron oxidations, and Jul₂ Pyr exhibits a second oxidation, with the largest potential splitting (ΔE=440 mV) thus far reported for 2,7-substituted pyrenes. Spectroelectrochemical measurements confirm an unexpectedly strong coupling between the 2,7-substituents in our pyrene derivatives.

Isolable Bis(triarylamine) Dications: Analogues of Thiele's, Chichibabin's, and Müller's Hydrocarbons

Since the pioneering work by Thiele and Chichibabin, who synthesized the first diradicals bridged by phenylene and biphenylene groups in 1904 and 1907, respectively, numerous efforts have been devoted to synthesizing stable diradicals during the last few decades, and several strategies have been developed to stabilize these highly reactive diradicals. In this Account, we describe the synthesis and characterization of isolable bis(triarylamine) dications, nitrogen analogues of Thiele's, Chichibabin's, and Müller's hydrocarbons, which represent facilely accessible, stable diradicals by replacing carbinyl centers with isoelectronic aminium centers. Along with discussing the molecular structures and electronic structures of the isolated bis(triarylamine) dications, their spectroscopic and magnetic properties are also introduced. Since 2011, we have reported the stabilization of a variety of radical cations bearing the weakly coordinating anion Al(OR_F)₄^- (R_F = polyfluorinated alkyl group), which we have recently successfully applied for the stabilization and crystallization of bis(triarylamine) dications, analogues of Thiele's, Chichibabin's, and Müller's hydrocarbons. Prior to our and Kamada's work, there have been only three stable bis(triarylamine) dications isolated in the solid state. The facile access of bis(triarylamine) dications in their crystalline forms allowed us to pursue a deep investigation of their solid-state structures, electronic structures, and physical properties. Similar to their hydrocarbon analogues, bis(triarylamine) dications possess characteristic resonance structures between open-shell singlet (OS) diradicals and closed-shell (CS) quinoidal forms. The combination of single-crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis and density functional theory (DFT) calculations has proved to be a robust strategy to gain a better understanding of the electronic structures of the obtained diradicals. The structural parameters obtained from XRD analysis reflect the overall contribution of each resonance structure to the crystal structure. The comparison of the parameters from the crystal structures with those from DFT calculations for the pure electronic configurations (CS, OS, and triplet states) affords an overview of the ground-state structures of the diradicals. To justify the "degree" of singlet diradical character, the diradical parameter y is applied, which is estimated by the occupancy of the lowest unoccupied natural orbital (LUNO) having antibonding nature (y = 0 for the closed-shell and y = 1 for the pure singlet diradical). In addition, magnetic susceptibility measurements serve as a practical experimental method to determine the singlet-triplet energy gaps of the isolable diradical dications. Through detailed studies on isolable bis(triarylamine) dications, magnetic bistability caused by intramolecular electron-exchange interactions was observed. Moreover, we also found that the singlet-triplet energy gaps of the diradicals could be thermally controlled. These investigations highlight the potential of bis(triarylamine) dications as building blocks for functional materials.

Rational Design of Molecular Hole-Transporting Materials for Perovskite Solar Cells: Direct versus Inverted Device Configurations

Due to a still limited understanding of the reasons making 2,2',7,7'-tetrakis(N,N-di-p-methoxyphenylamine)-9,9'-spirobifluorene (Spiro-OMeTAD) the state-of-the-art hole-transporting material (HTM) for emerging photovoltaic applications, the molecular tailoring of organic components for perovskite solar cells (PSCs) lacks in solid design criteria. Charge delocalization in radical cationic states can undoubtedly be considered as one of the essential prerequisites for an HTM, but this aspect has been investigated to a relatively minor extent. In marked contrast with the 3-D structure of Spiro-OMeTAD, truxene-based HTMs Trux1 and Trux2 have been employed for the first time in PSCs fabricated with a direct (n-i-p) or inverted (p-i-n) architecture, exhibiting a peculiar behavior with respect to the referential HTM. Notwithstanding the efficient hole extraction from the perovskite layer exhibited by Trux1 and Trux2 in direct configuration devices, their photovoltaic performances were detrimentally affected by their poor hole transport. Conversely, an outstanding improvement of the photovoltaic performances in dopant-free inverted configuration devices compared to Spiro-OMeTAD was recorded, ascribable to the use of thinner HTM layers. The rationalization of the photovoltaic performances exhibited by different configuration devices discussed in this paper can provide new and unexpected prospects for engineering the interface between the active layer of perovskite-based solar cells and the hole transporters.

Experimental and Theoretical Examination of the Radical Cations Obtained from the Chemical and Electrochemical Oxidation of 5-Aminothiazoles

Chemical or electrochemical one-electron oxidation of 5-N-arylaminothiazoles was found to afford stable radical cations. For chemical oxidation, 1 equivalent of [(4-BrC6H4)3N][SbCl6] (Magic Blue, MB) was added to CH2Cl2 solutions of the thiazoles, and the thus-obtained radicals showed light absorption in the near-infrared region. Electrochemical oxidation also led to bathochromic shifts in the absorption bands, and the obtained spectra were similar to those derived from the chemically oxidized species. These radicals afforded electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra that are consistent with the notion of stable nitrogen radicals (half-life≤385 h). The EPR spectrum of a thiazole containing 4-dimethylaminophenyl groups on the nitrogen atom at the 5-position changed significantly upon adding >3 equivalents of MB. Details of the electronic structures of the experimentally obtained radical cations were generated from theoretical calculations.

Bis(aminoaryl) Carbon-Bridged Oligo(phenylenevinylene)s Expand the Limits of Electronic Couplings

Carbon-bridged bis(aminoaryl) oligo(para-phenylenevinylene)s have been prepared and their optical, electrochemical, and structural properties analyzed. Their radical cations are class III and class II mixed-valence systems, depending on the molecular size, and they show electronic couplings which are among the largest for the self-exchange reaction of purely organic molecules. In their dication states, the antiferromagnetic coupling is progressively tuned with size from quinoidal closed-shell to open-shell biradicals. The data prove that the electronic coupling in the radical cations and the singlet-triplet gap in the dications show similar small attenuation factors, thus allowing charge/spin transfer over rather large distances.

Synthesis and photophysics of extended π-conjugated systems of substituted 10-aryl-pyrenoimidazoles

The synthesis of π-extended 10-aryl-pyrenoimidazoles having different substituents was realised via Ru(ii)-catalyzed oxidative annulation of 10-aryl-pyrenoimidazole with diphenylacetylene. The single crystal X-ray structure of trifluoromethyl and carboxylate substituted annulated-10-aryl-pyrenoimidazoles confirms the near coplanarity of the pyrene and imidazole moieties and the presence of twisted conformation resulting in intermolecular C-Hπ interactions. The lowest energy absorption maximum becomes red-shifted characteristic to the nature of the substituent owing to the extended π-conjugation, and specifically the nitro substituent shows intense absorption in the visible region with the maximum at 440 nm. All the molecules were found to show intense fluorescence both in solution and solid states. Strikingly, 170 nm red-shifted fluorescence with a large Stokes shift ca. 7000 cm^-1 for the nitro derivative, a value nearly two-fold higher than the parent compound despite its rigid polyaromatic skeleton was observed. The combination of electron rich π-conjugated aromatic systems with electron deficient substituents induces the intramolecular charge transfer interactions, which has been corroborated with the theoretical calculations.

Asymmetric oxidation of vinyl- and ethynyl terthiophene ligands in triruthenium complexes

Newly synthesized open-triangle triruthenium vinyl and ethynyl terthiophene complexes exhibit stepwise laterally localized oxidation processes, as revealed by UV-vis-NIR and IR spectroelectrochemistry.

A new series of pyrenyl-based triarylamines: syntheses, structures, optical properties, electrochemistry and electroluminescence

A new series of pyrenyl-based triarylamines (2a–2e and 3py) were designed and synthesized. These pyrene-based triarylamines exhibit excellent photoelectric properties and are potentially functional materials for devices.

Isolation and Characterization of Persistent Radical Cation and Dication of 2,7-Bis(dianisylamino)pyrene

Orbital interaction between 2,7-pyrenylene and two nitrogen redox-active centers effectively reduces the energy difference between HOMO and HOMO-1, both of which were distributed over the two nitrogen centers. In fact, one- and two-electron oxidation of 2,7-bis(dianisylamino)pyrene 3 generated a persistent radical cation and a persistent dication, respectively, and we succeeded in the isolation and single crystal X-ray structural analyses of all three oxidation states. The radical cation was considered as a spin and charge delocalized mixed-valence compound with a semiquinoidal structure. The dication was in an open-shell singlet state with a small singlet-triplet energy gap. The molecular and electronic structures for all three oxidation states of 3 were studied in comparison with the data reported for each oxidation state of closely related bis(triarylamine)s, of which structures were determined by X-ray crystallography.
