Generation and reactivity of the fragment ion [B12I8S(CN)]- in the gas phase and on surfaces

Gaseous fragment ions generated in mass spectrometers may be employed as "building blocks" for the synthesis of novel molecules on surfaces using ion soft-landing. A fundamental understanding of the reactivity of the fragment ions is required to control bond formation of deposited fragments in surface layers. The fragment ion [B12X11]- (X = halogen) is formed by collision-induced dissociation (CID) from the precursor [B12X12]2- dianion. [B12X11]- is highly reactive and ion soft-landing experiments have shown that this ion binds to the alkyl chains of organic molecules on surfaces. In this work we investigate whether specific modifications of the precursor ion affect the chemical properties of the fragment ions to such an extent that attachment to functional groups of organic molecules on surfaces occurs and binding of alkyl chains is prevented. Therefore, a halogen substituent was replaced by a thiocyanate substituent. CID of the precursor [B12I11(SCN)]2- ion preferentially yields the fragment ion [B12I8S(CN)]-, which shows significantly altered reactivity compared to the fragment ions of [B12I12]2-. [B12I8S(CN)]- has a previously unknown structural element, wherein a sulfur atom bridges three boron atoms. Gas-phase reactions with different neutral reactants (cyclohexane, dimethyl sulfide, and dimethyl amine) accompanied by theoretical studies indicate that [B12I8S(CN)]- binds with higher selectivity to functional groups of organic molecules than fragment ions of [B12I12]2- (e.g., [B12I11]- and [B12I9]-). These findings were further confirmed by ion soft-landing experiments, which showed that [B12I8S(CN)]- ions attacked ester groups of adipates and phthalates, whereas [B12I11]- ions only bound to alkyl chains of the same reagents.

The Power of the Proton: From Superacidic Media to Superelectrophile Catalysis

Superacidic media became famous in connection with carbocations. Yet not all reactive intermediates can be generated, characterized, and eventually isolated from these Brønsted acid/Lewis acid cocktails. The counteranion, that is the conjugate base, in these systems is often too nucleophilic and/or engages in redox chemistry with the newly formed cation. The Brønsted acidity, especially superacidity, is in fact often not even crucial unless protonation of extremely weak bases needs to be achieved. Instead, it is the chemical robustness of the aforementioned counteranion that determines the success of the protolysis. The advent of molecular Brønsted superacids derived from weakly coordinating, redox-inactive counteranions that do withstand the enormous reactivity of superelectrophiles such as silicon cations completely changed the whole field. This Perspective summarizes general aspects of medium and molecular Brønsted acidity and shows how applications of molecular Brønsted superacids have advanced from stoichiometric reactions to catalytic processes involving protons and in situ generated superelectrophiles.

The Reaction of Hydrogen Halides with Tetrahydroborate Anion and Hexahydro-closo-hexaborate Dianion

The mechanism of the consecutive halogenation of the tetrahydroborate anion [BH₄]⁻ by hydrogen halides (HX, X = F, Cl, Br) and hexahydro-closo-hexaborate dianion [B₆H₆]²⁻ by HCl via electrophile-induced nucleophilic substitution (EINS) was established by ab initio DFT calculations [M06/6-311++G(d,p) and wB97XD/6-311++G(d,p)] in acetonitrile (MeCN), taking into account non-specific solvent effects (SMD model). Successive substitution of H⁻ by X⁻ resulted in increased electron deficiency of borohydrides and changes in the character of boron atoms from nucleophilic to highly electrophilic. This, in turn, increased the tendency of the B–H bond to transfer a proton rather than a hydride ion. Thus, the regularities established suggested that it should be possible to carry out halogenation more selectively with the targeted synthesis of halogen derivatives with a low degree of substitution, by stabilization of H₂ complex, or by carrying out a nucleophilic substitution of B–H bonds activated by interaction with Lewis acids (BL₃).

B12X11(H2)−: exploring the limits of isotopologue selectivity of hydrogen adsorption

We study the isotopologue-selective binding of dihydrogen at the undercoordinated boron site of B₁₂X₁₁⁻ (X = H, F, Cl, Br, I, CN) using ab initio quantum chemistry. With a Gibbs free energy of H₂ attachment reaching up to 80 kJ mol⁻¹ (ΔG at 300 K for X = CN), these sites are even more attractive than most undercoordinated metal centers studied so far. We thus believe that they can serve as an edge case close to the upper limit of isotopologue-selective H₂ adsorption sites. Differences of the zero-point energy of attachment average 5.0 kJ mol⁻¹ between D₂ and H₂ and 2.7 kJ mol⁻¹ between HD and H₂, resulting in hypothetical isotopologue selectivities as high as 2.0 and 1.5, respectively, even at 300 K. Interestingly, even though attachment energies vary substantially according to the chemical nature of X, isotopologue selectivities remain very similar. We find that the H–H activation is so strong that it likely results in the instantaneous heterolytic dissociation of H₂ in all cases (except, possibly, for X = H), highlighting the extremely electrophilic nature of B₁₂X₁₁⁻ despite its negative charge. Unfortunately, this high reactivity also makes B₁₂X₁₁⁻ unsuitable for practical application in the field of dihydrogen isotopologue separation. Thus, this example stresses the two-edged nature of strong H₂ affinity, yielding a higher isotopologue selectivity on the one hand but risking dissociation on the other, and helps define a window of adsorption energies into which a material for selective adsorption near room temperature should ideally fall.

The extreme H₂ affinity of B₁₂X₁₁⁻ gives a glimpse of how higher selectivities in adsorptive isotopologue separation may be achieved.

Synthesis, Electronic Properties and Reactivity of [B12 X11 (NO2 )]2- (X=F-I) Dianions

Nitro‐functionalized undecahalogenated closo‐dodecaborates [B₁₂X₁₁(NO₂)]²⁻ were synthesized in high purities and characterized by NMR, IR, and Raman spectroscopy, single crystal X‐diffraction, mass spectrometry, and gas‐phase ion vibrational spectroscopy. The NO₂ substituent leads to an enhanced electronic and electrochemical stability compared to the parent perhalogenated [B₁₂X₁₂]²⁻ (X=F–I) dianions evidenced by photoelectron spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and quantum‐chemical calculations. The stabilizing effect decreases from X=F to X=I. Thermogravimetric measurements of the salts indicate the loss of the nitric oxide radical (NO^.). The homolytic NO^. elimination from the dianion under very soft collisional excitation in gas‐phase ion experiments results in the formation of the radical [B₁₂X₁₁O]^2−.. Theoretical investigations suggest that the loss of NO^. proceeds via the rearrangement product [B₁₂X₁₁(ONO)]²⁻. The O‐bonded nitrosooxy structure is thermodynamically more stable than the N‐bonded nitro structure and its formation by radical recombination of [B₁₂X₁₁O]^2−. and NO^. is demonstrated.

Direct functionalization of C-H bonds by electrophilic anions

Alkanes and [B₁₂X₁₂]^2- (X = Cl, Br) are both stable compounds which are difficult to functionalize. Here we demonstrate the formation of a boron-carbon bond between these substances in a two-step process. Fragmentation of [B₁₂X₁₂]^2- in the gas phase generates highly reactive [B₁₂X₁₁]^- ions which spontaneously react with alkanes. The reaction mechanism was investigated using tandem mass spectrometry and gas-phase vibrational spectroscopy combined with electronic structure calculations. [B₁₂X₁₁]^- reacts by an electrophilic substitution of a proton in an alkane resulting in a B-C bond formation. The product is a dianionic [B₁₂X₁₁C_nH_2n+1]^2- species, to which H⁺ is electrostatically bound. High-flux ion soft landing was performed to codeposit [B₁₂X₁₁]^- and complex organic molecules (phthalates) in thin layers on surfaces. Molecular structure analysis of the product films revealed that C-H functionalization by [B₁₂X₁₁]^- occurred in the presence of other more reactive functional groups. This observation demonstrates the utility of highly reactive fragment ions for selective bond formation processes and may pave the way for the use of gas-phase ion chemistry for the generation of complex molecular structures in the condensed phase.

Gas-Phase Fragmentation of Host-Guest Complexes of Cyclodextrins and Polyoxometalates

Gas-phase fragmentation pathways of host-guest complexes of cyclodextrins (CDs) and polyoxometalates (POMs) were examined using collision-induced dissociation (CID). The host-guest complexes studied here were composed of two different classes of POMs-Keggin (PW₁₂O₄₀^3-) and Lindqvist (M₆O₁₉^2-, M = Mo, W)-and three types of CDs (α-, β-, and γ-CD) differing in the diameter of the inner cavity. The CD-POM complexes were generated either by mixing methanol solutions of POM and CD or through a one-step acidic condensation of tetraoxometalates MO₄^2- (M = Mo, W) with CDs for complexes with Keggin and Lindqvist anions, respectively, and introduced into the gas phase using electrospray ionization (ESI). We observe distinct differences in fragmentation pathways of the complexes of Keggin and Lindqvist POMs under high- and low-energy CID conditions. Specifically, direct dissociation and proton transfer from CD to POM accompanied by the separation of fragments is observed in CID of Keggin CD-POM complexes. In contrast, dissociation of CD complexes with Lindqvist POMs is dominated by the simultaneous loss of multiple water molecules. This unusual fragmentation channel is attributed to dissociation of the POM cluster inside the CD cavity accompanied by covalent bond formation between the fragments and CD and elimination of multiple water molecules. The observed covalent coupling of metal oxide clusters opens up opportunities for derivatization of macrocyclic host molecules using collisional excitation of gaseous non-covalent complexes.

Synthesis and Applications of Perfunctionalized Boron Clusters

This Viewpoint describes major advances pertaining to perfunctionalized boron clusters in synthesis and their respective applications. The first portion of this work highlights key synthetic methods, allowing one to access a wide range of polyhedral boranes (B4 and B6-B12 cluster cores) that contain exhaustively functionalized vertices. The second portion of this Viewpoint showcases the historical developments in using these molecules for applications ranging from materials science to medicine. Last, we suggest potential new directions for these clusters as they apply to both synthetic methods and applications.

Superacids Based on Pentafluoroorthotellurate Derivatives of Aluminum

The new Lewis acid Al(OTeF₅ )₃ and its acetonitrile adduct CH₃ CN→Al(OTeF₅ )₃ were obtained by a simple one-step synthesis in batches of up to 15 g. Al(OTeF₅ )₃ and the adduct were characterized by vibrational spectroscopy (IR, Raman) and quantum-chemical calculations. Furthermore, five different salts of the new weakly coordinating anion [Al(OTeF₅ )₄ ]^- were prepared in a two-step procedure. [Ph₄ P][Al(OTeF₅ )₄ ], Cs[Al(OTeF₅ )₄ ], [Ph₃ C][Al(OTeF₅ )₄ ], as well as the protonated benzene derivatives [C₉ H₁₃ ][Al(OTeF₅ )₄ ] and [C₆ H₇ ][Al(OTeF₅ )₄ ] were characterized by low-temperature single-crystal X-ray diffraction and NMR spectroscopy. Arenium salts have rarely been characterized in the solid state and were synthesized in this work in a simplified fashion.

Binary twinned-icosahedral [B21H18]− interacts with cyclodextrins as a precedent for its complexation with other organic motifs

Evidence for an intrinsic binding force between dodecaborate dianions and receptors with hydrophobic binding pockets

A gas phase binding study revealed strong intrinsic intermolecular interactions between dianionic halogenated closo-dodecaborates [B12X12](2-) and several neutral organic receptors. Oxidation of a tetrathiafulvalene host allowed switching between two host-guest binding modes in a supramolecular complex. Complexes of β-cyclodextrin with [B12F12](2-) show remarkable stability in the gas phase and were successfully tested as carriers for the delivery of boron clusters into cancer cells.

Identification of a neutral loss from precursor ions with nearly Gaussian-shaped isotopic patterns via inverted isotopic patterns of product ions

RATIONALE

Direct atomic composition determination of ions with very broad Gaussian-shaped isotopic patterns is challenging because no monoisotopic peak is available for high accurate mass determination and no characteristic shapes in isotopic patterns are visible.

METHODS

Isolation and fragmentation of the ions corresponding to one peak (one nominal mass) in the center of the broad Gaussian-shaped isotopic pattern lead to a mass spectrum with the product ion signal showing the inverted full isotopic profile of the neutral fragment.

RESULTS

We have introduced a convenient method for the fast and straightforward identification of a neutral loss for molecular ions with broad isotopic patterns. The theoretical considerations underlying this method are explained and its practical limitations are considered. The benefits of this method are exemplified by guiding a reader through the analysis of a complex mixture of bridged carborate clusters, compounds with very broad isotopic patterns.

CONCLUSIONS

The presented method can be efficiently used for the determination of atomic compositions of compounds with broad isotopic patterns by their fragmentation using mass spectrometry. This method should significantly facilitate the mass spectrometric analysis of compounds containing several atoms with broad isotopic distributions, such as Ge, Sn, Mo, Ru and Hg, and, thus, can considerably broaden the use of mass spectrometry as an analytical method in inorganic and organometallic chemistry. Alkoxy substituted halogenated closo-dodecaborates as anions for ionic liquids

Halogenated and alkoxylated closo-dodecaborates [B12X11OR](2-) (X = Cl, Br; R = propyl, octyl, dodecyl) have been synthesized by halogenation of the known [B12H11OH](2-) anion followed by alkylation in the superbasic medium DMSO/KOH. The obtained sodium salts were transformed by simple metathesis reactions in aqueous solution to the tetrabutylammonium ([NBu4](+)) and 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium ([C6mim](+)) salts. All compounds were fully characterized by heteronuclear NMR, IR and Raman spectroscopy, ESI mass spectrometry, and thermal analytical measurements. Selected anions were also structurally characterized as their [Ph4P](+) salts by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The [C6mim](+) salts are thermally stable up to more than 300 °C and show clear melting points. Surprisingly, the compound [C6mim]2[B12Cl11O-propyl] having the short propyl group bound to the boron cluster shows the lowest melting point (96 °C) of all the investigated compounds. Thus this compound is a rare member of the class of ionic liquids consisting of dianions.
