Redox-Active M8L6Cubic Hosts with Tetraphenylethylene Faces Encapsulate Organic Dyes for Light-Driven H2Production

Multipocket Cage Enables the Binding of High-Order Bulky and Drug Guests Uncovered by MS Methodology

Achieving high guest loading and multiguest-binding capacity holds crucial significance for advancement in separation, catalysis, and drug delivery with synthetic receptors; however, it remains a challenging bottleneck in characterization of high-stoichiometry guest-binding events. Herein, we describe a large-sized coordination cage (MOC-70-Zn8Pd6) possessing 12 peripheral pockets capable of accommodating multiple guests and a high-resolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (HR-ESI-MS)-based method to understand the solution host-guest chemistry. A diverse range of bulky guests, varying from drug molecules to rigid fullerenes as well as flexible host molecules of crown ethers and calixarenes, could be loaded into open pockets with high capacities. Notably, these hollow cage pockets provide multisites to capture different guests, showing heteroguest coloading behavior to capture binary, ternary, or even quaternary guests. Moreover, a pair of commercially applied drugs for the combination therapy of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) has been tested, highlighting its potential in multidrug delivery for combined treatment.

Encapsulated Dye in Coordination-Assembled Octahedron for Visible-Light-Driven Proton Reduction and Nitroaromatic Hydrogenation

To mimic the finely tuned natural photosynthetic systems, a large metal-organic octahedron was synthesized by one-pot self-assembly with modified triphenylamine ligands and redox-active cobalt ions. By encapsulating an organic dye, fluorescein (Fl), within the inner cavity of the octahedron, the host-guest supramolecular system was provided for light-driven hydrogen production. The intimate distance between the redox site and the photosensitizer in the supramolecular metal-organic cage allowed the photoinduced electrons to transfer from the excited state Fl* to the redox cobalt center in a pseudo-intramolecular pathway. The supramolecular system showed good performance in light-driven hydrogen production and the reduction of nitroaromatic compounds. Control experiments based on a mononuclear compound resembling a cobalt corner of the octahedron and inhibitor competition provided evidence of enzyme-like catalytic behavior. The supramolecular reaction pathways within confined spaces contribute to the superior activity of the host-guest system.

Isoreticular Preparation of Tetraphenylethylene-based Multicomponent Metallacages towards Light-Driven Hydrogen Production

Multicomponent metallacages can integrate the functions of their different building blocks to achieve synergetic effects for advanced applications. Herein, based on metal-coordination-driven self-assembly, we report the preparation of a series of isoreticular tetraphenylethylene-based metallacages, which are well characterized by multinuclear NMR, ESI-TOF-MS and single-crystal X-ray diffraction techniques. The suitable integration of photosensitizing tetraphenylethylene units as faces and Re catalytic complexes as the pillars into a single metallacage offers a high photocatalytic hydrogen production rate of 1707 μmol g-1  h-1 , which is one of the highest values among reported metallacages. Femtosecond transient absorption and DFT calculations reveal that the metallacage can serve as a platform for the precise and organized arrangement of the two building blocks, enabling efficient and directional electron transfer for highly efficient photocatalytic performance. This study provides a general strategy to integrate multifunctional ligands into a certain metallacage to improve the efficiency of photocatalytic hydrogen production, which will guide the future design of metallacages towards photocatalysis.

A chemiluminescent lantern: a coordination cage catalysed oxidation of luminol followed by chemiluminescence resonance energy-transfer

A molecule of luminol bound as guest inside a Co₈ coordination cage host undergoes oxidation by H₂O₂ to generate chemiluminescence by a process in which the Co(II) ions in the cage superstructure activate the H₂O₂: accordingly the cage not only co-locates the reactants but also acts as a redox partner in the catalysis. The luminescence from oxidation of the cavity-bound luminol can transfer its excitation energy to surface-bound fluorescein molecules in an unusual example of Chemiluminescence Resonance Energy Transfer (CRET).

Tetramine Aspect Ratio and Flexibility Determine Framework Symmetry for Zn8 L6 Self-Assembled Structures

We derive design principles for the assembly of rectangular tetramines into Zn8 L6 pseudo-cubic coordination cages. Because of the rectangular, as opposed to square, geometry of the ligand panels, and the possibility of either Δ or Λ handedness of each metal center at the eight corners of the pseudo-cube, many different cage diastereomers are possible. Each of the six tetra-aniline subcomponents investigated in this work assembled with zinc(II) and 2-formylpyridine in acetonitrile into a single Zn8 L6 pseudo-cube diastereomer, however. Each product corresponded to one of four diastereomeric configurations, with T, Th , S6 or D3 symmetry. The preferred diastereomer for a given tetra-aniline subcomponent was shown to be dependent on its aspect ratio and conformational flexibility. Analysis of computationally modeled individual faces or whole pseudo-cubes provided insight as to why the observed diastereomers were favored.

Supramolecular Coordination Cages for Artificial Photosynthesis and Synthetic Photocatalysis

Because sunlight is the most abundant energy source on earth, it has huge potential for practical applications ranging from sustainable energy supply to light driven chemistry. From a chemical perspective, excited states generated by light make thermodynamically uphill reactions possible, which forms the basis for energy storage into fuels. In addition, with light, open-shell species can be generated which open up new reaction pathways in organic synthesis. Crucial are photosensitizers, which absorb light and transfer energy to substrates by various mechanisms, processes that highly depend on the distance between the molecules involved. Supramolecular coordination cages are well studied and synthetically accessible reaction vessels with single cavities for guest binding, ensuring close proximity of different components. Due to high modularity of their size, shape, and the nature of metal centers and ligands, cages are ideal platforms to exploit preorganization in photocatalysis. Herein we focus on the application of supramolecular cages for photocatalysis in artificial photosynthesis and in organic photo(redox) catalysis. Finally, a brief overview of immobilization strategies for supramolecular cages provides tools for implementing cages into devices. This review provides inspiration for future design of photocatalytic supramolecular host-guest systems and their application in producing solar fuels and complex organic molecules.

Incorporation of a Phosphino(pyridine) Subcomponent Enables the Formation of Cages with Homobimetallic and Heterobimetallic Vertices

Biological systems employ multimetallic assemblies to achieve a range of functions. Here we demonstrate the preparation of metal–organic cages that contain either homobimetallic or heterobimetallic vertices. These vertices are constructed using 2-formyl-6-diphenylphosphinopyridine, which forms ligands that readily bridge between a pair of metal centers, thus enforcing the formation of bimetallic coordination motifs. Two pseudo-octahedral homometallic M^I₁₂L₄ cages (M^I = Cu^I or Ag^I) were prepared, with a head-to-head configuration of their vertices confirmed by X-ray crystallography and multinuclear NMR for Ag^I. The phosphino-pyridine subcomponent also enabled the formation of a class of octanuclear Cd^II₄Cu^I₄L₄ tetrahedral cages, representing an initial example of self-assembled cages containing well-defined heterobimetallic vertices.

Direct Z-Scheme Heterojunction Catalysts Constructed by Graphitic-C3N4 and Photosensitive Metal-Organic Cages for Efficient Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution

The demand for improving the activity, durability, and recyclability of metal-organic cages (MOCs) that work as photocatalytic molecular devices in a homogeneous system has promoted research to combine them with other solid materials. An M₂L₄ type photosensitive metal-organic cage MOC-Q2 with light-harvesting ligands and catalytic Pd²⁺ centers has been synthesized and further heterogenized with graphitic carbon nitride to prepare a robust direct Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst for visible-light-driven hydrogen generation. The optimized g-C₃N₄/MOC-Q2 (0.7 wt%) sample exhibits a high H₂ evolution activity of 6423 μmol g⁻¹ h⁻¹ in 5 h, and a total turnover number of 39,695 after 10 h, significantly superior to the bare MOC-Q2 used in the homogeneous solution and the comparison sample Pd/g-C₃N₄/L-4. The enhanced performances of g-C₃N₄/MOC-Q2 can be ascribed to its direct Z-scheme heterostructure, which effectively improves the charge separation and transfer efficiency. This work presents a rational approach of designing a binary photocatalytic system through combing micromolecular MOCs with heterogeneous semiconductors for water splitting.

Light-emitting self-assembled metallacages

Coordination-driven self-assembly of metallacages has garnered significant interest because of their 3D layout and cavity-cored nature. The well-defined, highly tunable metallacage structures render them particularly attractive for investigating the properties of luminophores, as well as for inducing novel photophysical characters that enable widespread applications. In this review, we summarize the recent advances in synthetic methodologies for light-emitting metallacages, and highlight some representative applications of these metallacages. In particular, we focus on the favorable photophysical properties—including high luminescence efficiency in various physical states, good modularity in photophysical properties and stimulus responsiveness—that have resulted from incorporating ligands displaying aggregation-induced emission (AIE) into metallacages. These features show that the synergy between carrying out coordination-driven self-assembly and using luminophores with novel photophysical characteristics like AIE could stimulate the development of supramolecular luminophores for applications in fields as diverse as sensing, biomedicine and catalysis.

Photocatalysis in Supramolecular Fluorescent Metallacycles and Metallacages

The utilization of photocatalytic techniques for achieving light-to-fuel conversion is a promising way to ease the shortage of energy and degradation of the ecological environment. Fluorescent metallacycles and metallacages have drawn considerable attention and have been used in widespread fields due to easy preparation and their abundant functionality including photocatalysis. This review covers recent advances in photocatalysis in discrete supramolecular fluorescent metallacycles and metallacages. The developments in the utilization of the metallacycles skeletons and the effect of fluorescence-resonance energy transfer for photocatalysis are discussed. Furthermore, the use of the ligands decorated by organic chromophores or redox metal sites in metallacages as photocatalysts and their ability to encapsulate appropriate catalytic cofactors for photocatalysis are summarized. For the sake of brevity, macrocycles and cages with inorganic coordination complexes such as ruthenium complexes and iridium complexes are not included in this minireview.

A host-guest semibiological photosynthesis system coupling artificial and natural enzymes for solar alcohol splitting

Development of a versatile, sustainable and efficient photosynthesis system that integrates intricate catalytic networks and energy modules at the same location is of considerable future value to energy transformation. In the present study, we develop a coenzyme-mediated supramolecular host-guest semibiological system that combines artificial and enzymatic catalysis for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution from alcohol dehydrogenation. This approach involves modification of the microenvironment of a dithiolene-embedded metal-organic cage to trap an organic dye and NADH molecule simultaneously, serving as a hydrogenase analogue to induce effective proton reduction inside the artificial host. This abiotic photocatalytic system is further embedded into the pocket of the alcohol dehydrogenase to couple enzymatic alcohol dehydrogenation. This host-guest approach allows in situ regeneration of NAD⁺/NADH couple to transfer protons and electrons between the two catalytic cycles, thereby paving a unique avenue for a synergic combination of abiotic and biotic synthetic sequences for photocatalytic fuel and chemical transformation.

Abiotic–biotic hybrid systems are promising to trap light for fuel and chemical transformation with high efficacy and selectivity. This study reports a coenzyme-mediated supramolecular host-guest semibiological system combining supramolecular catalyst and enzymes for solar alcohol splitting.

Sterics and Hydrogen Bonding Control Stereochemistry and Self-Sorting in BINOL-Based Assemblies

Here we demonstrate how the hydrogen-bonding ability of a BINOL-based dialdehyde subcomponent dictated the stereochemical outcome of its subsequent self-assembly into one diastereomeric helicate form when bearing free hydroxy groups, and another in the case of its methylated congener. The presence of methyl groups also altered the self-sorting behavior when mixed with another, short linear dialdehyde subcomponent, switching the outcome of the system from narcissistic to integrative self-sorting. In all cases, the axial chirality of the BINOL building block also dictated helicate metal center handedness during stereospecific self-assembly. A new family of stereochemically pure heteroleptic helicates were thus prepared using the new knowledge gained. We also found that switching from Fe^II to Zn^II, or the incorporation of a longer linear ligand, favored heteroleptic structure formation.

Luminescent silver(i) complexes with pyrazole-tetraphenylethene ligands: turn-on fluorescence due to the coordination-driven rigidification and solvent-oriented structural transformation

A new tetrapyrazole-modified tetraphenylethene (TPE) ligand L was designed and found to display "turn-on" fluorescence when it combines with Ag⁺ ions in dilute solution by restricting intramolecular rotation of TPE. A series of Ag complexes 1-7 were obtained, and they exhibit excellent fluorescence properties in the solid state. Compared with PF₆^-, the silver complex with the CF₃SO₃^- anion can further enhance its fluorescence due to the transformation of its structure from Ag₂L (2) to Ag₄L₂ (3). As zero-dimensional complexes, 1 and 3 have excellent piezochromic properties with a color change from blue to green. Furthermore, structural changes of 1 and 3 to the corresponding three-dimensional frameworks 4 and 5 occur upon immersing in ethanol. In addition, 1 can act as a potential fluorescent probe for sensing nitrile compounds.

Dual-emitting piezofluorochromic dye@MOF for white-light generation

An tetraphenylethylene-based MOF (HNU-49) has been synthesized, which exhibits interesting piezofluorochromic behavior. Additionally, rhodamine B (RhB) can be successful encapsulated in HNU-49, to emit the characteristic dual-emission of RhB and the framework. The combination of host-guest interaction and piezofluorochromism can precisely modulate the luminescence to achieve near white-light.

Coordination-Induced Emission from Tetraphenylethylene Units and Their Applications

Thanks to the potential of aggregation-induced emission (AIE) phenomena, improved stabilities, and the good selectivity and sensitivity of the chemical responses exhibited by the products, coordination-driven self-assembly with tetraphenylethylene (TPE) units has recently received much attention and has been widely investigated for application in chemical sensors, cell imaging agents, light-harvesting systems, and others. Several reviews have emerged on the topics of AIE chemistry and aggregation-induced emission luminogen (AIEgen)-based supramolecular assembles, however, there is still a distinct lack of full overviews of emission enhancement from the viewpoint of metal-coordination effects. Thus, this minireview offers recent advances that have been made in the design and application of TPE-based metallacycles, metallacages, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and coordination polymers (CPs).

Transformation Network Culminating in a Heteroleptic Cd6L6L'2 Twisted Trigonal Prism

Transformations between three-dimensional metallosupramolecular assemblies can enable switching between the different functions of these structures. Here we report a network of such transformations, based upon a subcomponent displacement strategy. The flow through this network is directed by the relative reactivities of different amines, aldehydes, and di(2-pyridyl)ketone. The network provides access to an unprecedented heteroleptic Cd6L6L'2 twisted trigonal prism. The principles underpinning this network thus allow for the design of diverse structural transformations, converting one helicate into another, a helicate into a tetrahedron, a tetrahedron into a different tetrahedron, and a tetrahedron into the new trigonal prismatic structure type. The selective conversion from one host to another also enabled the uptake of a desired guest from a mixture of guests.

Supramolecular assemblies based on Fe8L12 cubic metal–organic cages: synergistic adsorption and spin-crossover properties

Strategy for the Construction of Diverse Poly-NHC-Derived Assemblies and Their Photoinduced Transformations

A series of supramolecular assemblies of types [Ag₈ (L)₄ ](PF₆ )₈ and [Ag₄ (L)₂ ](PF₆ )₄ , obtained from the tetraphenylethylene (TPE) bridged tetrakis(1,2,4-triazolium) salts H₄ -L(PF₆ )₄ and Ag^I ions, is described. The assembly type obtained dependends on the N-wingtip substituents of H₄ -L(PF₆ )₄ . Changes in the lengths of the N4-wingtip substituents enables controlled formation of assemblies with either [Ag₄ (L)₂ ](PF₆ )₄ or [Ag₈ (L)₄ ](PF₆ )₈ stoichiometry. The molecular structures of selected [Ag₈ (L)₄ ](PF₆ )₈ and [Ag₄ (L)₂ ](PF₆ )₄ assemblies were determined by X-ray diffraction analyses. While H₄ -L(PF₆ )₄ does not exhibit fluorescence in solution, their tetra-NHC (NHC=N-heterocyclic carbene) assemblies do upon NHC-metal coordination. Upon irradiation, all assemblies undergo a light-induced, supramolecule-to-supramolecule structural transformation by an oxidative photocyclization involving phenyl groups of the TPE core, resulting in a significant change of the luminescence properties.

Diastereoselective Control of Tetraphenylethene Reactivity by Metal Template Self-Assembly

The reaction of 4,4',4'',4'''-(ethene-1,1,2,2-tetrayl)tetraaniline with 2-pyridinecarboxaldehyde and iron(II) chloride resulted, after aqueous workup, in the diastereoselective formation of an [Fe₂ L₃ ]⁴⁺ triple-stranded helicate structure, irrespective of the stoichiometry employed. The helicate structure was characterized in solution by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy, and in the solid state by single-crystal X-ray crystallography. The reaction of iron(II) tetrafluoroborate or iron(II) bistriflimide with the tetraaniline and 2-pyridinecarboxaldehyde allowed the formation of an [Fe₈ L₆ ]¹⁶⁺ cube when the appropriate stoichiometry was used, but these structures were unstable with respect to hydrolysis. The pendant amine groups on the helicate can be functionalized by reaction with acid chlorides or anhydrides, and the resulting functionalized tetraphenylethene (TPE) units were isolated by the reaction of the helicate with tris(2-aminoethyl)amine. The emission properties of the TPE units were studied in THF/water mixtures, and they were found by dynamic light scattering to self-assemble into large (av. diameter 250 nm) structures.

Photochemical Properties of Host-Guest Supramolecular Systems with Structurally Confined Metal-Organic Capsules

Inspired by natural photosynthesis, researchers have designed symmetric metal-organic hosts with large inner pockets that are spontaneously generated through preorganized ligands and functionalized metallocorners to construct dye-containing host-guest systems. The abundant noncovalent interaction sites in the pockets of the hosts facilitated substrate-catalyst interactions for possible enrichment, fixation, and activation of substrates/reagents, providing special electron transfer pathways for regio- or stereoselectively photocatalytic chemical transformations. In this Account, we focus our attention on metal-organic hosts that contain photoactive or redox-active units to evaluate electron transfer and charge separation between host and guest units in these supramolecular systems and elucidate the related photoinduced chemical reactions controlled by these electron transfer processes within the structurally confined pockets of these interesting metal-organic hosts. We have been engaged in developing methods to isolate a series of chromophores for charge separation in supramolecular systems, incorporating organic dyes as photosensitizers in metal-organic hosts with electron acceptor/donor guests is a promising way to enable typical enzyme-like photocatalytic transformations within a confined microenvironment. Related to these inter- and intramolecular photoinduced electron transfer (PET) processes, the formation of host-guest supramolecular systems to fix and isolate the donor-acceptor pair with a short through-space distance provided a new PET pathway to stabilize the charge-separated ion pair. Highly efficient photosynthetic systems can be obtained when charge transfer to electron donors/acceptors occurs faster than the charge recombination. This Account starts with a brief summary of the potential approaches for constructing photoactive metal-organic hosts through the incorporation of dye molecules within ligand backbones or as a part of the metal nodes of the architecture. Following the methodological summary is a discussion on the mechanisms governing the photoinduced charge separation and electron transfer pathways within the dye-incorporated metal-organic hosts. We also searched for strategies for constructing photoactive supramolecular systems through encapsulating dye molecules within the inner space of redox-active hosts. The photochemistry of these systems demonstrated the following advantages due to the structural confinement: avoiding excited state quenching caused by other chemical species, including aggregated dyes, stabilizing the radical intermediate and tuning the absorption or emission of the guest through electron/energy transfer pathways. The photoinduced dye to redox-active host electron transfer is a new and efficient pathway that is meaningful for chemists to realize and understand many important enzymatic processes and to reveal the secrets of a substance and energy metabolism in biological systems. The confined interactions between the host and the guest have shown fascinating effects of promoting and controlling light-induced chemical transformations.

Chiral molecular face-rotating sandwich structures constructed through restricting the phenyl flipping of tetraphenylethylene

Chiral tetraphenylethylene (TPE) derivatives have great potential in chiral recognition and circularly polarized luminescence. However, they were mainly constructed through introducing chiral substituents at the periphery of the TPE moiety, which required additional chemical modifications and limited the variety of chiralities of products. Herein, we constructed a series of chiral face-rotating sandwich structures (FRSs) through restricting the phenyl flipping of TPE without introducing any chiral substituents. In FRSs, the complex arrangements of TPE motifs resulted in a variety of chiralities. We also found that non-covalent repulsive interactions in vertices caused the facial hetero-directionality of FRSs, and the hydrogen bonds between imine bonds and hydroxy groups induced excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) emission of FRSs. In addition, the fluorescence intensity of FRSs decreases with the addition of trifluoroacetic acid. This study provides new insights into the rational design of chiral assemblies from aggregation-induced emission (AIE) active building blocks through restriction of intramolecular rotation (RIR).

Luminescent Tetrahedral Molecular Cages Containing Ruthenium(II) Chromophores

We have designed linear metalloligands which contain a central photoactive [Ru(N^∧N)₃]²⁺ unit bordered by peripheral metal binding sites. The combination of these metalloligands with Zn(II) and Fe(II) ions leads to heterometallic tetrahedral cages, which were studied by NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and photophysical methods. Like the parent metalloligands, the cages remain emissive in solution. This approach allows direct incorporation of the favorable properties of ruthenium(II) polypyridyl complexes into larger self-assembled structures.

Diversity of metal-organic macrocycles assembled from carbazole based ligands with different lengths

A series of carbazole based ligands with different lengths were assembled with nickel ions to construct metal-organic macrocycles. High-resolution mass spectrometry and ion mobility-mass spectrometry have been used to analyse the resulting M_nL_n assembly coexisting in solution. Combining with the structural analysis of their solid confirmation, it was revealed that the diversity of the metal-organic macrocycles was increased with the flexibility of the ligands.

Binding of anions in triply interlocked coordination catenanes and dynamic allostery for dehalogenation reactions

By synergistic combination of multicomponent self-assembly and template-directed approaches, triply interlocked metal organic catenanes that consist of two isolated chirally identical tetrahedrons were constructed and stabilized as thermodynamic minima. In the presence of suitable template anions, the structural conversion from the isolated tetrahedral conformers into locked catenanes occurred via the cleavage of an intrinsically reversible coordination bond in each of the tetrahedrons, followed by the reengineering and interlocking of two fragments with the regeneration of the broken coordination bonds. The presence of several kinds of individual pocket that were attributed to the triply interlocked patterns enabled the possibility of encapsulating different anions, allowing the dynamic allostery between the unlocked/locked conformers to promote the dehalogenation reaction of 3-bromo-cyclohexene efficiently, as with the use of dehalogenase enzymes. The interlocked structures could be unlocked into two individual tetrahedrons through removal of the well-matched anion templates. The stability and reversibility of the locked/unlocked structures were further confirmed by the catching/releasing process that accompanied emission switching, providing opportunities for the system to be a dynamic molecular logic system.

Excitation Energy Delocalization and Transfer to Guests within MII4L6 Cage Frameworks

We have prepared a series of M^II₄L₆ tetrahedral cages containing one or the other of two distinct BODIPY moieties, as well as mixed cages that contain both BODIPY chromophores. The photophysical properties of these cages and their fullerene-encapsulated adducts were studied in depth. Upon cage formation, the charge-transfer character exhibited by the bis(aminophenyl)-BODIPY subcomponents disappeared. Strong excitonic interactions were instead observed between at least two BODIPY chromophores along the edges of the cages, arising from the electronic delocalization through the metal centers. This excited-state delocalization contrasts with previously reported cages. All cages exhibited the same progression from an initial bright singlet state (species I) to a delocalized dark state (species II), driven by interactions between the transition dipoles of the ligands, and subsequently into geometrically relaxed species III. In the case of cages loaded with C₆₀ or C₇₀ fullerenes, ultrafast host-to-guest electron transfer was observed to compete with the excitonic interactions, short-circuiting the I → II → III sequence.

Design Principles for the Optimization of Guest Binding in Aromatic-Paneled FeII4L6 Cages

A series of aromatic-paneled Fe^II₄L₆ cages was synthesized through iron(II)-templated subcomponent self-assembly of 2-formylpyridine and C₂-symmetric diamine building blocks having differing geometries, including many with a large degree of lateral offset between metal-binding sites. The new cages were characterized using X-ray crystallography, NMR spectroscopy, and mass spectrometry. Investigations of the guest binding properties of the cages provided insights into the structural factors important for the observation of guest binding. Both the size and arrangement of the aromatic panels were shown to be crucial for achieving effective encapsulation of large hydrophobic guests, including fullerenes, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and steroids, with subtle differences in the structure of subcomponents resulting in incommensurate effects on the binding abilities of the resulting hosts. Cages with large, offset aromatic panels were observed to be the most effective hosts as a result of a preference for a ligand conformation where the aromatic panels lie tangent to the edges of the tetrahedron, thus maximizing cavity enclosure.

Redox-active copper triangles as an enzymatic molecular flask for light-driven hydrogen production

A redox-active Cu-based triangle was developed to encapsulate fluorescein for photocatalytic hydrogen production. Control experiments and inactive ATP as an inhibitor were performed to confirm this enzymatic photocatalytic behaviour.
