Abstract
Marine meroterpenoids have attracted a great deal of attention from synthetic research groups due to their attractive and varied biological activities and their unique and diverse structures. In most cases, however, further biological studies have been severely limited mainly to the scarcity of natural supply and because almost none of the reported syntheses methods has enabled unified access for a large number of marine meroterpenoids with aureane and avarane skeletons. Based on our previous publications and the study of recent manuscripts on marine meroterpenoids, we have conceived a unified strategy for these fascinating marine compounds with aureane or avarane skeletons using available drimane compounds as starting materials. The key step is a biosynthetic sequence of 1,2-hydride and methyl shifts. This strategy is of great synthetic value to access marine meroterpenoids through easy chemical synthetic procedures. Finally, several retrosynthetic proposals are made for the future synthesis of several members of this class of meroterpenoids, focused on consolidating these 1,2-rearrangements as a versatile and unified strategy that could be widely used in the preparation of these marine meroterpenoids.

Abstract
The reaction of bromopropargylic alcohols with phenols in the presence of Cs2CO3/DMF affords α-phenoxy-α’-hydroxyketones (1:1 adducts) and α,α-diphenoxyketones (1:2 adducts) in up to 92% and 24% yields, respectively. Both products are formed via ring opening of the same intermediates, 1,3-dioxolan-2-ones, generated in situ from bromopropargylic alcohols and Cs2CO3.

Abstract
Trisubstituted vinyl ethers were accessed via Chan-Evans-Lam coupling of vinyl trifluoroborates and primary aliphatic alcohols. This approach complements prior methods that required the use of neat liquid alcohol coupling partners. A palladium-catalyzed redox-relay Heck reaction was used to convert several vinyl ethers into aldehyde-functionalized 1,3-dihydroisobenzofurans.

Abstract
Polyene cyclizations generate molecular complexity from a linear polyene in a single step. While methods to initiate these cyclizations have been continuously expanded and improved over the years, the majority of polyene substrates are still limited to simple alkyl-substituted alkenes. In this study, we took advantage of the unique reactivity of higher-functionalized bifunctional alkenes. The realization of a polyene tetracyclization of a dual nucleophilic aryl enol ether involving a transannular endo-termination step enabled the total synthesis of the tricyclic diterpenoid pimara-15-en-3α-8α-diol. The highly flexible and modular route allowed for the preparation of a diverse library of cyclization precursors specifically designed for the total synthesis of the tetracyclic nor-diterpenoid norflickinflimiod C. The tetracyclization of three diversely substituted allenes enabled access to complex pentacyclic products and provided a detailed insight into the underlying reaction pathways.

Abstract
An enantioselective synthetic approach for preparing manginoids and guignardones, two types of biogenetically related meroterpenoids, is reported. This bioinspired and divergent synthesis employs an oxidative 1,3-dicarbonyl radical-initiated cyclization and cyclodehydration of the common precursor to forge the central ring of the manginoids and guignardones, respectively, at a late stage. Key synthetic steps include silica-gel-promoted semipinacol rearrangement to form the 6-oxabicyclo[3.2.1]octane skeleton and the Suzuki-Miyaura reaction of vinyl bromide to achieve fragment coupling. This synthesis protocol enables the asymmetric syntheses of four fungal meroterpenoids from commercially available materials.

Abstract
A 12-step total synthesis of the natural product dysiherbol A, a strongly anti-inflammatory and anti-tumor avarane meroterpene isolated from the marine sponge Dysidea sp., was elaborated. As key steps, the synthesis features an enantioselective Cu-catalyzed 1,4-addition/enolate-trapping opening move, an Au-catalyzed double cyclization to build up the tetracyclic core-carbon skeleton, and a late installation of the C5-bridgehead methyl group via proton-induced cyclopropane opening associated with spontaneous cyclic ether formation. The obtained pentacyclic compound (corresponding to an anhydride of the originally suggested structure for dysiherbol A) showed identical spectroscopic data as the natural product, but an opposite molecular rotation. CD-spectroscopic measurements finally confirmed that both the constitution and the absolute configuration of the originally proposed structure of (+)-dysiherbol A need to be revised.

Abstract
The divergent total synthesis strategy can be successfully applied to the preparation of families of natural products using a common late-stage pluripotent intermediate. This approach is a powerful tool in organic synthesis as it offers opportunities for the efficient preparation of structurally related compounds. This article reviews the synthesis of the marine natural product aureol, as well as its use as a common intermediate in the divergent synthesis of other marine natural and non-natural tetracyclic meroterpenoids.

Abstract
Polyene cyclizations are capable of producing molecular complexity in a single step. While classical systems are limited to simple alkyl substitution patterns only, bifunctional polyenes take advantage of the unique reactivity of higher‐functionalized alkenes. Here, we highlight the potential of these variants for the synthesis of structurally complex polycycles involving unprecedented termination steps. We also want to provide a stimulus for the development of novel modes of cyclization that involve bifunctional units to enable efficient synthesis of yet inaccessible natural products.

Abstract
Polyene cyclizations are one of the most powerful and fascinating chemical transformations to rapidly generate molecular complexity. However, cyclizations employing heteroatom-substituted polyenes are rare. Described here is the tetracyclization of a dual nucleophilic aryl enol ether involving an unprecedented transannular endo-termination step. In this transformation, five stereocenters, two of which are quaternary, four carbon-carbon bonds, and four six-membered rings are formed from a readily available cyclization precursor. The realization of this cyclization enabled short synthetic access to the tricyclic diterpenoid pimara-15-en-3α-8α-diol.

Abstract
Here we present a comprehensive study on the [3+2]-cycloaddition of thiocarbonyl ylides with a wide variety of alkenes and alkynes. The obtained dihydro- and tetrahydrothiophene products serve as exceptionally versatile intermediates providing access to thiophenes, dienes, dendralenes, and vic-quarternary carbon centers. The use of high-pressure conditions enables thermally unstable, sterically encumbered or moderately reactive substrates to undergo the cycloaddition under mild conditions, thereby increasing the yield by up to 58%. In addition, we showcase its utility by the formal syntheses of the pharmaceuticals NGB 4420 and tenilapine.

Abstract
Organosulfur compounds have long played a vital role in organic chemistry and in the development of novel chemical structures and architectures. Prominent among these organosulfur compounds are those involving a sulfur(IV) center, which have been the subject of countless investigations over more than a hundred years. In addition to a long list of textbook sulfur-based reactions, there has been a sustained interest in the chemistry of organosulfur(IV) compounds in recent years. Of particular interest within organosulfur chemistry is the ease with which the synthetic chemist can effect a wide range of transformations through either bond formation or bond cleavage at sulfur. This review aims to cover the developments of the past decade in the chemistry of organic sulfur(IV) molecules and provide insight into both the wide range of reactions which critically rely on this versatile element and the diverse scaffolds that can thereby be synthesized.

Abstract
Stachyflin, aureol, smenoqualone, strongylin A, and cyclosmenospongine belong to a family of tetracyclic meroterpenoids, which, by nature of their unique molecular structures and various biological properties, have attracted synthetic and medicinal chemists alike. Despite their obvious biosynthetic relationship, only scattered reports on the synthesis and biological investigation of individual meroterpenoids have appeared so far. Herein, we report a highly modular synthetic strategy that enabled the synthesis of each of these natural products and 15 non-natural derivatives. The route employs an auxiliary-controlled Diels-Alder reaction to enable the enantioselective construction of the decalin subunit, which is connected to variously substituted arenes by either carbonyl addition chemistry or sterically demanding sp2-sp3 cross-coupling reactions. The selective installation of either the cis- or trans-decalin stereochemistry is accomplished by an acid-mediated cyclization/isomerization reaction. Biological profiling reveals that strongylin A and a simplified derivative thereof have potent antibiotic activity against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.

Abstract
The formal (3+2) cycloaddition between terminal allenes and aryl or styryl gold(I) carbenes generated by a retro-Buchner reaction of 7-substituted 1,3,5-cycloheptatrienes led to indenes and cyclopentadienes, respectively. These cycloaddition processes have been applied to the construction of the carbon skeleton of the cycloaurenones and the dysiherbols as well as to the total synthesis of (±)-laurokamurene B.
