Size-Selective Hydroformylation by a Rhodium Catalyst Confined in a Supramolecular Cage

Computational Screening of Putative Catalyst Transition Metal Complexes as Guests in a Ga4L612- Nanocage

Metal-organic cages form well-defined microenvironments that can enhance the catalytic proficiency of encapsulated transition metal complexes (TMCs). We introduce a screening protocol to efficiently identify TMCs that are promising candidates for encapsulation in the Ga4L612- nanocage. We obtain TMCs from the Cambridge Structural Database with geometric and electronic characteristics amenable to encapsulation and mine the text of associated manuscripts to curate TMCs with documented catalytic functionality. By docking candidate TMCs inside the nanocage cavity and carrying out electronic structure calculations, we identify a subset of successfully optimized candidates (TMC-34) and observe that encapsulated guests occupy an average of 60% of the cavity volume, in line with previous observations. Notably, some guests occupy as much as 72% of the cavity as a result of linker rotation. Encapsulation has a universal effect on the electrostatic potential (ESP), systematically decreasing the ESP at the metal center of each TMC in the TMC-34 data set, while minimally altering TMC metal partial charges. Collectively these observations support geometry-based screening of potential guests and suggest that encapsulation in Ga4L612- cages could electrostatically stabilize diverse cationic or electropositive intermediates. We highlight candidate guests with associated known reactivity and solubility most amenable for encapsulation in experimental follow-up studies.

Substrate scope driven optimization of an encapsulated hydroformylation catalyst

Caged complexes can provide impressive selective catalysts. Due to the complex shapes of such caged catalysts, however, the level of selectivity control of a single substrate cannot be extrapolated to other substrates. Herein, the substrate scope using 41 terminal alkene substrates is investigated in the hydroformylation reaction with an encapsulated rhodium catalyst [Rh(H)(CO)3(P(mPy3(ZnTPP)3))] (CAT1). For all substrates, the amount of branched products formed was higher with CAT1 than with the unencapsulated reference catalyst [Rh(H)(CO)2(P(mPy3))2] (CAT2) (linear/branched ratio between 2.14 and 0.12 for CAT1 and linear/branched ratio between 6.22 and 0.59 for CAT2). Interestingly, the level of cage induced selectivity depends strongly on the substrate structure that is converted. Analysis of the substrate scope combined with DFT calculations suggests that noncovalent interactions between the substrate moieties and cage walls play a key role in controlling the regioselectivity. Consequently, these supramolecular interactions were further optimized by replacing the ZnTPP building block with a zinc porphyrin analog that contained OiPr substituents on the meta position of the aryl rings. The resulting caged catalyst, CAT4, converted substrates with even higher branched selectivity.

Reversing the stereoselectivity of intramolecular [2+2] photocycloaddition utilizing cucurbit[8]uril as a molecular flask

Macrocyclic hosts, such as cucurbit[8]uril (CB8), can significantly influence the outcomes of chemical reactions involving encapsulated reactive guests. In this study, we demonstrate that CB8 completely reverses the stereoselectivity of intramolecular [2+2] photo-cycloaddition reactions. Notably, it was also found that CB8 can trigger the unreactive diene to be reactive.

Substrate Selectivity Imparted by Self-Assembled Molecular Containers and Catalysts

Recent trends in catalysis are devoted to mimicking some peculiar features of enzymes like site selectivity, through functional group recognition, and substrate selectivity, through recognition of the entire surface of the substrate. The latter is a specific feature of enzymes that is seldomly present in homogeneous catalysis. Supramolecular catalysis, thanks to the self-assembly of simple subunits, enables the creation of cavities and surfaces whose confinement effects drive the preferential binding of a substrate among others with consequent substrate selectivity. The topic is an emerging field that exploits recognition phenomena to discriminate the reagents based on their size and shape. This review deals this cutting-edge field of research covering examples of supramolecular self-assembled molecular containers and catalysts operating in organic as well as aqueous media, with special emphasis for catalytic systems dealing with direct competitive experiments involving two or more substrates.

Molecular Co-Catalyst Confined within a Metallacage for Enhanced Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction

The construction of structurally well-defined supramolecular hosts to accommodate catalytically active species within a cavity is a promising way to address catalyst deactivation. The resulting supramolecular catalysts can significantly improve the utilization of catalytic sites, thereby achieving a highly efficient chemical conversion. In this study, the Co-metalated phthalocyanine (Pc-Co) was successfully confined within a tetragonal prismatic metallacage, leading to the formation of a distinctive type of supramolecular photocatalyst (Pc-Co@Cage). The host-guest architecture of Pc-Co@Cage was unambiguously elucidated by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD), NMR, and ESI-TOF-MS, revealing that the single cobalt active site can be thoroughly isolated within the space-restricted microenvironment. In addition, we found that Pc-Co@Cage can serve as a homogeneous supramolecular photocatalyst that displays high CO2 to CO conversion in aqueous media under visible light irradiation. This supramolecular photocatalyst exhibits an obvious improvement in activity (TONCO = 4175) and selectivity (SelCO = 92%) relative to the nonconfined Pc-Co catalyst (TONCO = 500, SelCO = 54%). The present strategy provided a rare example for the construction of a highly active, selective, and stable photocatalyst for CO2 reduction through a cavity-confined molecular catalyst within a discrete metallacage.

Catalytic Inhibition of Base-Mediated Reactivity by a Self-Assembled Metal-Ligand Host

Spacious M4 L6 tetrahedra can act as catalytic inhibitors for base-mediated reactions. Upon adding only 5 % of a self-assembled Fe4 L6 cage complex, the conversion of the conjugate addition between ethylcyanoacetate and β-nitrostyrene catalyzed by proton sponge can be reduced from 83 % after 75 mins at ambient temperature to <1 % under identical conditions. The mechanism of the catalytic inhibition is unusual: the octacationic Fe4 L6 cage increases the acidity of exogenous water in the acetonitrile reaction solvent by favorably binding the conjugate acid of the basic catalyst. The inhibition only occurs for Fe4 L6 hosts with spacious internal cavities: minimal inhibition is seen with smaller tetrahedra or Fe2 L3 helicates. The surprising tendency of the cationic cage to preferentially bind protonated, cationic ammonium guests is quantified via the comprehensive modeling of spectrophotometric titration datasets.

Supramolecular Subphthalocyanine Cage as Catalytic Container for the Functionalization of Fullerenes in Water

Herein we report the first example of a supramolecular cage that works as a catalytic molecular reactor to perform transformations over fullerenes in aqueous medium. Taking advantage of the ability of metallo-organic Pd(II)-subphthalocyanine (SubPc) capsules to form stable host:guest complexes with C60 , we have prepared a water-soluble cage that provides a hydrophobic environment for conducting cycloadditions over encapsulated C60 , namely, Diels-Alder reactions with anthracene. Indeed, the presence of catalytic amounts of SubPc cage dissolved in water promotes co-encapsulation of insoluble C60 and anthracene substrates, allowing the reaction to occur inside the cavity under mild conditions. The lower stability of the host:guest complex with the resulting C60 cycloadduct facilitates its displacement by pristine C60 , which grants catalytic turnover. Moreover, bis-addition compounds are regioselectively formed inside the cage when using excess anthracene.

Transition Metal Catalysis in Living Cells: Progress, Challenges, and Novel Supramolecular Solutions

The importance of transition metal catalysis is exemplified by its wide range of applications, for example in the synthesis of chemicals, natural products, and pharmaceuticals. However, one relatively new application is for carrying out new-to-nature reactions inside living cells. The complex environment of a living cell is not welcoming to transition metal catalysts, as a diverse range of biological components have the potential to inhibit or deactivate the catalyst. Here we review the current progress in the field of transition metal catalysis, and evaluation of catalysis efficiency in living cells and under biological (relevant) conditions. Catalyst poisoning is a ubiquitous problem in this field, and we propose that future research into the development of physical and kinetic protection strategies may provide a route to improve the reactivity of catalysts in cells.

Exploring the Gas-Phase Formation and Chemical Reactivity of Highly Reduced M8 L6 Coordination Cages

Coordination cages with well-defined cavities show great promise in the field of catalysis on account of their unique combination of molecular confinement effects and transition-metal redox chemistry. Here, three coordination cages are reduced from their native 16+ oxidation state to the 2+ state in the gas phase without observable structural degradation. Using this method, the reaction rate constants for each reduction step were determined, with no noticeable differences arising following either the incorporation of a C60 -fullerene guest or alteration of the cage chemical structure. The reactivity of highly reduced cage species toward molecular oxygen is "switched-on" after a threshold number of reduction steps, which is influenced by guest molecules and the structure of cage components. These new experimental approaches provide a unique window to explore the chemistry of highly-reduced cage species that can be modulated by altering their structures and encapsulated guest species.

Photoresponsive Azobenzene-Functionalized Shell Cross-Linked Micelles for Selective Asymmetric Transfer Hydrogenation

We describe the substrate-selective asymmetric transfer hydrogenation of aromatic ketones using rhodium complexes immobilized on a photoresponsive nanoreactor. The nanoreactor switches its morphology upon light irradiation in a wavelength-selective manner. Kinetic studies show that the gated behavior in the cross-linking layer is key to discriminating among substrates and reagents during catalysis. Under ultraviolet light irradiation, the nanoreactor displays substrate selectivity, converting smaller ketone substrates faster to the corresponding secondary alcohols.

Molecular Cavity for Catalysis and Formation of Metal Nanoparticles for Use in Catalysis

The employment of weak intermolecular interactions in supramolecular chemistry offers an alternative approach to project artificial chemical environments like the active sites of enzymes. Discrete molecular architectures with defined shapes and geometries have become a revolutionary field of research in recent years because of their intrinsic porosity and ease of synthesis using dynamic non-covalent/covalent interactions. Several porous molecular cages have been constructed from simple building blocks by self-assembly, which undergoes many self-correction processes to form the final architecture. These supramolecular systems have been developed to demonstrate numerous applications, such as guest stabilization, drug delivery, catalysis, smart materials, and many other related fields. In this respect, catalysis in confined nanospaces using such supramolecular cages has seen significant growth over the years. These porous discrete cages contain suitable apertures for easy intake of substrates and smooth release of products to exhibit exceptional catalytic efficacy. This review highlights recent advancements in catalytic activity influenced by the nanocavities of hydrogen-bonded cages, metal-ligand coordination cages, and dynamic or reversible covalently bonded organic cages in different solvent media. Synthetic strategies for these three types of supramolecular systems are discussed briefly and follow similar and simplistic approaches manifested by simple starting materials and benign conditions. These examples demonstrate the progress of various functionalized molecular cages for specific chemical transformations in aqueous and nonaqueous media. Finally, we discuss the enduring challenges related to porous cage compounds that need to be overcome for further developments in this field of work.

Metallocavitins as Promising Industrial Catalysts: Recent Advances

The energy, material, and environmental problems of society require clean materials and impose an urgent need to develop effective chemical processes for obtaining and converting energy to ensure further sustainable development. To solve these challenges, it is necessary, first of all, to learn solar energy harvesting through the development of artificial photosynthesis. In our planet, water, carbon dioxide, and methane are such affordable and inexhaustible clean materials. Electro/photocatalytic water splitting, and also CO₂ and CH₄ transforming into valuable products, requires the search for relevant efficient and selective processes and catalysts. Of great interest is the emerging new generation of bioinspired catalysts—metallocavitins (MCs). MCs are attracting increasing attention of researchers as advanced models of metalloenzymes, whose efficiency and selectivity are well known. The primary field of MC application is fine organic synthesis and enantioselective catalysis. On the other hand, MCs demonstrate high activity for energy challenging reactions involving small gas molecules and high selectivity for converting them into valuable products. This mini-review will highlight some recent advances in the synthesis of organic substances using MCs, but its main focus will be on the rapid development of advanced catalysts for the activation of small molecules, such as H₂O, CO₂, and CH₄, and the prospects for creating related technological processes in the future.

Uncovering the Hidden Landscape of Tris(4-pyridyl) Ligands: Topological Complexity Derived from the Bridgehead

Supramolecular main group chemistry is a developing field which parallels the conventional domain of metallo-organic chemistry. Little explored building blocks in this area are main group metal-based ligands which have the appropriate donor symmetry to build desired molecular or extended arrangements. Tris(pyridyl) main group ligands (E(py)₃ , E=main group metal) are potentially highly versatile building blocks since shifting the N-donor arms from the 2- to the 3-positions and 4-positions provides a very simple way of changing the ligand character from mononuclear/chelating to multidentate/metal-bridging. Here, the coordination behaviour of the first main group metal tris(4-pyridyl) ligands, E(4-py)₃ (E=Sb, Bi, Ph-Sn) is explored, as well as their ability to build metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). The complicated topology of these MOFs shows a marked influence on the counter anion and on the ability of the E(4-py)₃ ligands to switch coordination mode, depending on the steric and donor character of the bridgehead. This structure-directing influence of the bridgehead provides a potential building strategy for future molecular and MOF design in this area.

A Novel M8 L6 Cubic Cage That Binds Tetrapyridyl Porphyrins: Cage and Solvent Effects in Cobalt-Porphyrin-Catalyzed Cyclopropanation Reactions

Confinement of a catalyst can have a significant impact on catalytic performance and can lead to otherwise difficult to achieve catalyst properties. Herein, we report the design and synthesis of a novel caged catalyst system Co-G@Fe₈ (Zn-L ⋅ 1)₆ , which is soluble in both polar and apolar solvents without the necessity of any post-functionalization. This is a rare example of a metal-coordination cage able to bind catalytically active porphyrins that is soluble in solvents spanning a wide variety of polarity. This system was used to investigate the combined effects of the solvent and the cage on the catalytic performance in the cobalt catalyzed cyclopropanation of styrene, which involves radical intermediates. Kinetic studies show that DMF has a protective influence on the catalyst, slowing down deactivation of both [Co(TPP)] and Co-G@Fe₈ (Zn-L ⋅ 1)₆ , leading to higher TONs in this solvent. Moreover, DFT studies on the [Co(TPP)] catalyst show that the rate determining energy barrier of this radical-type transformation is not influenced by the coordination of DMF. As such, the increased TONs obtained experimentally stem from the stabilizing effect of DMF and are not due to an intrinsic higher activity caused by axial ligand binding to the cobalt center ([Co(TPP)(L)]). Remarkably, encapsulation of Co-G led to a three times more active catalyst than [Co(TPP)] (TOF_ini ) and a substantially increased TON compared to both [Co(TPP)] and free Co-G. The increased local concentration of the substrates in the hydrophobic cage compared to the bulk explains the observed higher catalytic activities.

Increasing structural and functional complexity in self-assembled coordination cages

Progress in metallo-supramolecular chemistry creates potential to synthesize functional nano systems and intelligent materials of increasing complexity. In the past four decades, metal-mediated self-assembly has produced a wide range of structural motifs such as helicates, grids, links, knots, spheres and cages, with particularly the latter ones catching growing attention, owing to their nano-scale cavities. Assemblies serving as hosts allow application as selective receptors, confined reaction environments and more. Recently, the field has made big steps forward by implementing dedicated functionality, e.g. catalytic centres or photoswitches to allow stimuli control. Besides incorporation in homoleptic systems, composed of one type of ligand, desire arose to include more than one function within the same assembly. Inspiration comes from natural enzymes that congregate, for example, a substrate recognition site, an allosteric regulator element and a reaction centre. Combining several functionalities without creating statistical mixtures, however, requires a toolbox of sophisticated assembly strategies. This review showcases the implementation of function into self-assembled cages and devises strategies to selectively form heteroleptic structures. We discuss first examples resulting from a combination of both principles, namely multicomponent multifunctional host-guest complexes, and their potential in application in areas such as sensing, catalysis, and photo-redox systems.

One-Pot Dual C-C Coupling Reaction via Site Selective Cascade Formation by PdII -Cryptate of an Amino-Ether Heteroditopic Macrobicycle

Selectivity of aryl iodo over ethynyl iodo toward the Suzuki cross coupling reaction is explored by utilizing a palladium complex of amino-ether heteroditopic macrobicycle. Subsequently, unreacted ethynyl iodide undergoes homocoupling reaction in the same catalytic atmosphere, thereby representing a cascade dual C-C coupling reaction. Furthermore, this approach is extended for novel one-pot synthesis of unsymmetrical 1,3-diynes.

How to not build a cage: endohedral functionalization of polyoxometalate-based metal-organic polyhedra

Introducing functionalities into the interior of metal-organic cage complexes can confer properties and utilities (e.g. catalysis, separation, drug delivery, and guest recognition) that are distinct from those of unfunctionalized cages. Endohedral functionalization of such cage molecules, for decades, has largely relied on modifying their organic linkers to covalently append targeted functional groups to the interior surface. We herein introduce an effective coordination method to bring in functionalities at the metal sites instead, for a set of polyhedral cages where the nodes are in situ formed polyoxovanadate clusters, [VIV 6O6(OCH3)9(μ6-SO4)(COO)3]2-. Replacing the central sulfates of these hexavanadate clusters with more strongly coordinating phosphonate groups allows the installation of functionalities within the cage cavities. Organophosphonates with phenyl, biphenyl, and terphenyl tails were examined for internalization. Depending on the size/shape of the cavities, small phosphonates can fit into the molecular containers whereas larger ones inhibit or transform the framework architecture, whereby the first non-cage complex was isolated from a reaction that otherwise would lead to entropically favored regular polyhedra cages. The results highlight the complex and dynamic nature of the self-assembly process involving polyoxometalates and the scope of molecular variety accessible by the introduction of endo functional groups.

Cell mimicry as a bottom-up strategy for hierarchical engineering of nature-inspired entities

Artificial biology is an emerging concept that aims to design and engineer the structure and function of natural cells, organelles, or biomolecules with a combination of biological and abiotic building blocks. Cell mimicry focuses on concepts that have the potential to be integrated with mammalian cells and tissue. In this feature article, we will emphasize the advancements in the past 3-4 years (2017-present) that are dedicated to artificial enzymes, artificial organelles, and artificial mammalian cells. Each aspect will be briefly introduced, followed by highlighting efforts that considered key properties of the different mimics. Finally, the current challenges and opportunities will be outlined. A Five-layer π-Aromatic Structure Formed through Self-assembly of a Porphyrin Trimer and Two Aromatic Guests

In this study we synthesized two- and four-armed porphyrins - bearing two carboxyl and four 2-aminoquinolino functionalities, respectively, at their meso positions - as a complementary hydrogen bonding pair for the self-assembly of a D₂ -symmetric porphyrin trimer host. Two units of the two-armed porphyrin and one unit of the four-armed porphyrin self-assembled quantitatively into the D₂ -symmetric porphyrin trimer, stabilized through ammidinium-carboxylate salt bridge formation, in CH₂ Cl₂ and CHCl₃ . The porphyrin trimer host gradually bound two units of 1,3,5-trinitrobenzene between the pair of porphyrin units, forming a five-layer aromatic structure. At temperatures below -40 °C, the rates of association and dissociation of the complexes were slow on the NMR spectroscopic time scale, allowing the 1 : 1 and 1 : 2 complexes of the trimer host and trinitrobenzene guest(s) to be detected independently when using less than 2 eq of trinitrobenzene. Vis titration experiments revealed the values of K₁ (2.1±0.4×10⁵  M^-1 ) and K₂ (2.2±0.06×10⁴  M^-1 ) in CHCl₃ at room temperature.

Recent developments in the construction and applications of platinum-based metallacycles and metallacages via coordination

Coordination-driven suprastructures have attracted much interest due to their unique properties. Among these structures, platinum-based architectures have been broadly studied due to their facile preparation. The resultant two- or three-dimensional (2D or 3D) systems have many advantages over their precursors, such as improved emission tuning, sensitivity as sensors, and capture and release of guests, and they have been applied in biomedical diagnosis as well as in catalysis. Herein, we review the recent results related to platinum-based coordination-driven self-assembly (CDSA), and the text is organized to emphasizes both the synthesis of new metallacycles and metallacages and their various applications.

N-Heterocyclic Carbene Copper(I) Rotaxanes Mediate Sequential Click Ligations with All Reagents Premixed

We have prepared NHC-Cu^I complexes with a rotaxane structure and used them as sterically sensitive catalysts for one-pot sequential copper-catalyzed azide/alkyne cycloadditions in solutions containing all of the coupling partners premixed in unprotected form. Most notably, a photolabile and sterically encumbered complex first catalyzed the coupling of a less bulky azide/alkyne pair; after removing the protective macrocyclic component from the rotaxane structure, through irradiation with light, the exposed dumbbell-shaped NHC-Cu^I complex catalyzed the second click reaction of a bulkier azide/alkyne pair. Using this approach, we obtained predominantly, from a single sealed pot, a bis-triazole product (84 %) from a mixture of two sterically distinct azides and a diyne.

Cofactor-Mediated Nucleophilic Substitution Catalyzed by a Self-Assembled Holoenzyme Mimic

A self-assembled Fe₄L₆ cage is capable of co-encapsulating multiple carboxylic acid containing guests in its cavity, and these acids can act as cofactors for cage-catalyzed nucleophilic substitutions. The kinetics of the substitution reaction depend on the size, shape, and binding affinity of each of the components, and small structural changes in guest size can have large effects on the reaction. The host is quite promiscuous and is capable of binding multiple guests with micromolar binding affinities while retaining the ability to effect turnover and catalysis. Substrate binding modes vary widely, from simple 1:1 complexes to 1:2 complexes that can show either negative or positive cooperativity, depending on the guest. The molecularity of the dissociative substitution reaction varies, depending on the electrophile leaving group, acid cofactor, and nucleophile size: small changes in the nature of substrate can have large effects on reaction kinetics, all controlled by selective molecular recognition in the cage interior.

Metal-Organic Capsules with NADH Mimics as Switchable Selectivity Regulators for Photocatalytic Transfer Hydrogenation

Switchable selective hydrogenation among the groups in multifunctional compounds is challenging because selective hydrogenation is of great interest in the synthesis of fine chemicals and pharmaceuticals as a result of the importance of key intermediates. Herein, we report a new approach to highly selectively (>99%) reducing C═X (X = O, N) over the thermodynamically more favorable nitro groups locating the substrate in a metal-organic capsule containing NADH active sites. Within the capsule, the NADH active sites reduce the double bonds via a typical 2e^- hydride transfer hydrogenation, and the formed excited-state NAD⁺ mimics oxidize the reductant via two consecutive 1e^- processes to regenerate the NADH active sites under illumination. Outside the capsule, nitro groups are highly selectively reduced through a typical 1e^- hydrogenation. By combining photoinduced 1e^- transfer regeneration outside the cage, both 1e^- and 2e^- hydrogenation can be switched controllably by varying the concentrations of the substrates and the redox potential of electron donors. This promising alternative approach, which could proceed under mild reaction conditions and use easy-to-handle hydrogen donors with enhanced high selectivity toward different groups, is based on the localization and differentiation of the 2e^- and 1e^- hydrogenation pathways inside and outside the capsules, provides a deep comprehension of photocatalytic microscopic reaction processes, and will allow the design and optimization of catalysts. We demonstrate the advantage of this method over typical hydrogenation that involves specific activation via well-modified catalytic sites and present results on the high, well-controlled, and switchable selectivity for the hydrogenation of a variety of substituted and bifunctional aldehydes, ketones, and imines.

Catalysis inside Supramolecular Capsules: Recent Developments

In the last decades, supramolecular chemists have developed new molecular receptors able to include a wide range of guests. In addition, they have designed synthetic hosts able to form capsules having an internal volume of thousands of Å3. This inner space shows different features from the bulk solution. In particular, this environment has recently been employed to perform chemical reactions, obtaining reaction products different from the “normal” conditions. These supramolecular capsules act as nanoreactors, catalyzing many chemical transformations. This review collects the recent developments (since 2015) in this field, focusing on supramolecular capsules based on resorcinarene hexameric capsules and metal-cage capsules.

A Supramolecular Strategy for Selective Catalytic Hydrogenation Independent of Remote Chain Length

Performing selective transformations on complex substrates remains a challenge in synthetic chemistry. These difficulties often arise due to cross-reactivity, particularly in the presence of similar functional groups at multiple sites. Therefore, there is a premium on the ability to perform selective activation of these functional groups. We report here a supramolecular strategy where encapsulation of a hydrogenation catalyst enables selective olefin hydrogenation, even in the presence of multiple sites of unsaturation. While the reaction requires at least one sterically nondemanding alkene substituent, the rate of hydrogenation is not sensitive to the distance between the alkene and the functional group, including a carboxylate, on the other substituent. This observation indicates that only the double bond has to be encapsulated to effect hydrogenation. Going further, we demonstrate that this supramolecular strategy can overcome the inherent allylic alcohol selectivity of the free catalyst, achieving supramolecular catalyst-directed regioselectivity as opposed to directing-group selectivity.

Structure Optimisation of Large Transition-Metal Complexes with Extended Tight-Binding Methods

Large transition-metal complexes are used in numerous areas of chemistry. Computer-aided theoretical investigations of such complexes are limited by the sheer size of real systems often consisting of hundreds to thousands of atoms. Accordingly, the development and thorough evaluation of fast semi-empirical quantum chemistry methods that are universally applicable to a large part of the periodic table is indispensable. Herein, we report on the capability of the recently developed GFNn-xTB method family for full quantum-mechanical geometry optimisation of medium to very large transition-metal complexes and organometallic supramolecular structures. The results for a specially compiled benchmark set of 145 diverse closed-shell transition-metal complex structures for all metals up to Hg are presented. Further the GFNn-xTB methods are tested on three established benchmark sets regarding reaction energies and barrier heights of organometallic reactions.

Size-Selective Hydroformylation by a Rhodium Catalyst Confined in a Supramolecular Cage

Size-selective hydroformylation of terminal alkenes was attained upon embedding a rhodium bisphosphine complex in a supramolecular metal-organic cage that was formed by subcomponent self-assembly. The catalyst was bound in the cage by a ligand-template approach, in which pyridyl-zinc(II) porphyrin interactions led to high association constants (>105  m-1 ) for the binding of the ligands and the corresponding rhodium complex. DFT calculations confirm that the second coordination sphere forces the encapsulated active species to adopt the ee coordination geometry (i.e., both phosphine ligands in equatorial positions), in line with in situ high-pressure IR studies of the host-guest complex. The window aperture of the cage decreases slightly upon binding the catalyst. As a result, the diffusion of larger substrates into the cage is slower compared to that of smaller substrates. Consequently, the encapsulated rhodium catalyst displays substrate selectivity, converting smaller substrates faster to the corresponding aldehydes. This selectivity bears a resemblance to an effect observed in nature, where enzymes are able to discriminate between substrates based on shape and size by embedding the active site deep inside the hydrophobic pocket of a bulky protein structure.
