Pyridyl‐Functionalized 1‐Phosphabarrelene: Synthesis, Coordination Chemistry and Photochemical di‐π‐Methane Rearrangement

Facile One-Step Access to Pyrrole-Based 1,4-Diphosphabarrelenes

1,4-Diphosphabarrelenes are bicyclic diphosphines relevant, for example, for the generation of polymetallic coordination compounds. However, current synthetic protocols either suffer from low yields or require multiple reaction steps. Herein, we report the one-step synthesis of pyrrole-based 1,4-diphosphabarrelenes that are obtained in very good yields from the reaction of 1,2,5-trimethylpyrrole with 1,2-bis(dichlorophosphino)ethane or 1,2-bis(dichlorophosphino)benzene. The new caged diphosphines are strong donor ligands and act as bridging ligand in nickel(0), rhodium(I), iridium(I) and copper(I) coordination compounds.

On the Reactivity of Phosphaalumenes towards C-C Multiple Bonds

Heterocycles containing group 13 and 15 elements such as borazines are an integral part of organic, biomedical and materials chemistry. Surprisingly, heterocycles containing P and Al are rare. We have now utilized phosphaalumenes in reactions with alkynes, alkenes and conjugated double bond systems. With sterically demanding alkynes 1,2-phosphaalumetes were afforded, whereas the reaction with HCCH or HCCSiMe₃ gave 1,4-phosphaaluminabarrelenes. Using styrene saturated 1,2-phosphaalumates were formed, which reacted further with additional styrene to give different regio-isomers of 1,4-aluminaphosphorinanes. Using ethylene, a 1,4-aluminaphosphorinane is obtained, while with 1,3-butadiene a bicyclic system containing an aluminacyclopentane and a phosphirane unit was synthesized. The experimental work is supported by theoretical studies to shed light on the mechanism governing the formation of these heterocycles.

Borane Adducts of Aromatic Phosphorus Heterocycles: Synthesis, Crystallographic Characterization and Reactivity of a Phosphinine-B(C6F5)3 Lewis Pair

A phosphinine‐borane adduct of a Me₃Si‐functionalized phosphinine and the Lewis acid B(C₆F₅)₃ has been synthesized and characterized crystallographically for the first time. The reaction strongly depends on the nature of the substituents in the α‐position of the phosphorus heterocycle. In contrast, the reaction of B₂H₆ with various substituted phosphinines leads to an equilibrium between the starting materials and the phosphinine–borane adducts that is determined by the Lewis basicity of the phosphinine. The novel phosphinine borane adduct (6‐B(C₆F₅)₃) shows rapid and facile insertion and [4+2] cycloaddition reactivity towards phenylacetylene. A hitherto unknown dihydro‐1‐phosphabarrelene is formed with styrene. The reaction with an ester provides a new, facile and selective route to 1‐R‐phosphininium salts. These salts then undergo a [4+2] cycloaddition in the presence of Me₃Si−C≡CH and styrene to cleanly form unprecedented derivatives of 1‐R‐phosphabarrelenium salts.

Non-conventional Behavior of a 2,1-Benzazaphosphole: Heterodiene or Hidden Phosphinidene?

The titled 2,1-benzazaphosphole (1) (i. e. ArP, where Ar=2-(DippN=CH)C6 H4 , Dipp=2,6-iPr2 C6 H3 ) showed a spectacular reactivity behaving both as a reactive heterodiene in hetero-Diels-Alder (DA) reactions or as a hidden phosphinidene in the coordination toward selected transition metals (TMs). Thus, 1 reacts with electron-deficient alkynes RC≡CR (R=CO2 Me, C5 F4 N) giving 1-phospha-1,4-dihydro-iminonaphthalenes 2 and 3, that undergo hydrogen migration producing 1-phosphanaphthalenes 4 and 5. Compound 1 is also able to activate the C=C double bond in selected N-alkyl/aryl-maleimides RN(C(O)CH)2 (R=Me, tBu, Ph) resulting in the addition products 7-9 with bridged bicyclic [2.2.1] structures. The binding of the maleimides to 1 is semi-reversible upon heating. By contrast, when 1 was treated with selected TM complexes, it serves as a 4e donor bridging two TMs thus producing complexes [μ-ArP(AuCl)2 ] (10), [(μ-ArP)4 Ag4 ][X]4 (X=BF4 (11), OTf (12)) and [μ-ArP(Co2 (CO)6 )] (13). The structure and electron distribution of the starting material 1 as well as of other compounds were also studied from the theoretical point of view.

New frontiers: 1,4-diphosphinines and P-bridged bis(NHCs)

This review describes synthetic concepts and breakthroughs in 1,4-diphosphinine and related P-bridged bis(NHCs) chemistry, covering the last four decades, starting from monocyclic 1,4-dihydro-1,4-diphosphinines in the early 80s to the most recent and promising achievements of tricyclic 1,4-dihydro-1,4-diphosphinines and tricyclic 1,4-diphosphinines. Theoretical aspects are presented for 1,4-dihydro- and 1,4-diphosphinines considering HOMO LUMO situations as well as the degree of aromaticity. Moreover, fundamental characteristics of analytical data of these compounds are highlighted with special focus on substituent effects, structural aspects and trends of electrophilicity. The two P-centers and the heterocyclic rings of 1,4-dihydro- and 1,4-diphosphinines constitute a broad platform for substitution, reduction/oxidation, alkylation, complexation and cycloaddition reactions, i.e., a comprehensive compilation of reactivity aspects is presented. Furthermore, very recent developments in the synthesis and reactivity of tricyclic PV/V- and PIII/III-bridged bis(imidazole-2-ylidenes) will be discussed together with new perspectives derived from an antiaromatic middle ring. In total, our intention is to show new frontiers, i.e., new synthetic paths, thus creating novel opportunities for potential applications in molecular and materials chemistry.

Distannabarrelenes with Three Coordinated SnII Atoms

Crystalline 1,4-distannabarrelene compounds [(ADCAr )3 Sn2 ]SnCl3 (3-Ar) (ADCAr ={ArC(NDipp)2 CC}; Dipp=2,6-iPr2 C6 H3 , Ar=Ph or DMP; DMP=4-Me2 NC6 H4 ) derived from anionic dicarbenes Li(ADCAr ) (2-Ar) (Ar=Ph or DMP) have been reported. The cationic moiety of 3-Ar features a barrelene framework with three coordinated SnII atoms at the 1,4-positions, whereas the anionic unit SnCl3 is formally derived from SnCl2 and chloride ion. The all carbon substituted bis-stannylenes 3-Ar have been characterized by NMR spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. DFT calculations reveal that the HOMO of 3-Ph (ϵ=-6.40 eV) is mainly the lone-pair orbital at the SnII atoms of the barrelene unit. 3-Ar readily react with sulfur and selenium to afford the mixed-valence SnII /SnIV compounds [(ADCAr )3 SnSn(E)](SnCl6 )0.5 (E=S 4-Ar, Ar=Ph or DMP; E=Se 5-Ph).

[4 + 2]-Cycloadditions of a thiazol-based tricyclic 1,4-diphosphinine and a new easy 1,4-diphosphinine protection deprotection strategy

Diels–Alder-reactions of a thiazol-2-thione-based, tricyclic 1,4-diphosphinine were investigated, showing that the central aromatic π-system can react with various dienophiles. In one case, photochemical deprotection of the 1,4-diphosphinine was found.
