Sustainable Elastomers for Actuators: "Green" Synthetic Approaches and Material Properties

Elastomeric materials have great application potential in actuator design and soft robot development. The most common elastomers used for these purposes are polyurethanes, silicones, and acrylic elastomers due to their outstanding physical, mechanical, and electrical properties. Currently, these types of polymers are produced by traditional synthetic methods, which may be harmful to the environment and hazardous to human health. The development of new synthetic routes using green chemistry principles is an important step to reduce the ecological footprint and create more sustainable biocompatible materials. Another promising trend is the synthesis of other types of elastomers from renewable bioresources, such as terpenes, lignin, chitin, various bio-oils, etc. The aim of this review is to address existing approaches to the synthesis of elastomers using "green" chemistry methods, compare the properties of sustainable elastomers with the properties of materials produced by traditional methods, and analyze the feasibility of said sustainable elastomers for the development of actuators. Finally, the advantages and challenges of existing "green" methods of elastomer synthesis will be summarized, along with an estimation of future development prospects.

Polyurethane Recycling: Conversion of Carbamates-Catalysis, Side-Reactions and Mole Balance

Diisocyanates, a key monomer in polyurethane, are generally lost during recycling. Polyurethane alcoholysis to carbamate and subsequent cracking to isocyanate represents a promising, phosgene-free recycling route. This work reports the thermal and catalytic cracking of a model carbamate (Methyl N-phenyl carbamate, MPC) to isocyanate (Phenyl isocyanate). Multiple catalysts (ZnO, Bi₂O₃, Al₂O₃, and Montmorillonite K-10) were evaluated in a closed system (batch autoclaves) to decompose MPC at temperatures of 160-200 °C, with a thorough analysis of the products and high (≥90%) mole balance. The thermal reaction was very limited at these temperatures, whereas the catalytic reaction led mainly to aniline and urea and seemed to be dominated by water adsorbed on the catalyst surface.

The methodology for preparing domperidone: strategies, routes and reaction processes

Domperidone is a powerful peripheral dopamine receptor antagonist; however, a systematic review of the synthetic methods and processes of this drug has not been reported so far. This review summarizes the synthetic strategies, synthetic routes and reaction processes of domperidone in detail. Domperidone can be synthesized from the coupling reaction of two benzimidazolone derivatives (intermediates 1 and 2). Intermediate 1 can be prepared by two synthetic routes: the cyclization of o-phenylenediamine with carbonyl reagents followed by coupling with 1,3-dihalopropane, and the coupling reaction of o-halo or o-amino substituted nitrobenzene with 1,3-disubstituted propane followed by reduction and cyclization. The latter route avoids the production of di-substituted by-products and has higher reaction selectivity. Intermediate 2 is synthesized by coupling substituted nitrobenzene with 4-aminopiperidine followed by reduction and cyclization, which is similar to the synthetic route of intermediate 1. Understanding the advantages and drawbacks of these synthetic methodologies would provide insights for the development of new strategies to prepare domperidone. Moreover, the methods used to synthesize domperidone can provide alternative approaches in the preparation of drugs or compounds with similar structure.

Effective Synthesis of m-Xylylene Dicarbamate via Carbonylation of m-Xylylene Diamine with Ethyl Carbamate over Hierarchical TS-1 Catalysts

Carbonylation of m-xylylene diamine (XDA) with ethyl carbamate to produce m-xylylene dicarbamate (XDC), which is the crucial intermediate for the production of m-xylylene diisocyanate (XDI), over the hierarchical TS-1 (HTS-1) zeolite catalyst was studied. The catalysts were characterized by Brunauer-Emmett-Teller, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and temperature-programed desorption of ammonia techniques systematically. The results showed that the high performance of HTS-1 could be attributed to the weak acidity and high V _meso/V _total ratio of the catalyst. Impacts of reaction time and reusage on the HTS-1 catalyst were also investigated. Under 6 h and 200 °C, XDA conversion could reach 100% with 88.5% XDC yield. Furthermore, partial loss of Ti active sites with Lewis acidity on the catalyst surface led to the decrease of XDC yield during recycling. Moreover, a possible reaction mechanism for the title reaction was primarily proposed.

Reductive Carbonylation of Nitroarenes Using a Heterogenized Phen-Pd Catalyst

The reductive carbonylation of nitroarenes in the presence of MeOH and CO(g) is one of the interesting alternative routes without utilizing toxic phosgene and corrosive HCl generation for the synthesis of industrially useful carbamate compounds that serve as important intermediates for polyurethane production. Since homogeneous palladium catalysts supported by phen (phen = 1,10-phenanthroline) are known to be effective for this catalysis, the heterogenized Pd catalyst was developed using the phen-containing solid support. In this study, we report the synthesis of a phen-based heterogeneous Pd catalyst, Pd@phen-POP, which involves the solvent knitting of a phen scaffold via the Lewis-acid-catalyzed Friedel-Crafts reaction using dichloromethane as a source for linker in the presence of AlCl₃ as a catalyst. The resulting solid material has been thoroughly characterized by various physical methods revealing high porosity and surface area. Similar to the homogeneous pallidum catalyst, this heterogeneous catalyst shows efficient reductive carbonylation of various nitroarenes. The catalytic reaction using nitrobenzene as a model compound presents a high turnover number (TON = 530) and a reasonable turnover frequency (TOF = 45 h^-1), with a high selectivity (92%) for the carbamate formation. According to the recycling study, the heterogeneous catalyst is recyclable and retains ∼90% of the original reactivity in each cycle.

Highly efficient synthesis of novel bio-based pentamethylene dicarbamate via carbonylation of pentanediamine with ethyl carbamate over well-defined titanium oxide catalysts

Highly efficient synthesis of bio-based pentamethylene dicarbamate from pentanediamine and ethyl carbamate was successfully achieved over the well-defined TiO2 catalysts, which provides a green and sustainable way for the production of bio-based isocyanates or polyurethane.

Reaction Mechanisms and Rate Constants of Auto-Catalytic Urethane Formation and Cleavage Reactions

The chemistry of urethanes plays a key role in important industrial processes. Although catalysts are often used, the study of the reactions without added catalysts provides the basis for a deeper understanding. For the non-catalytic urethane formation and cleavage reactions, the dominating reaction mechanism has long been debated. To our knowledge, the reaction kinetics have not been predicted quantitatively so far. Therefore, we report a new computational study of urethane formation and cleavage reactions. To analyze various potential reaction mechanisms and to predict the reaction rate constants quantum chemistry and transition state theory were employed. For validation, experimental data from literature and from own experiments were used. Quantitative agreement of experiments and predictions could be demonstrated. The calculations confirm earlier assumptions that urethane formation reactions proceed via mechanisms where alcohol molecules act as auto-catalysts. Our results show that it is essential to consider several transition states corresponding to different reaction orders to enable agreement with experimental observations. Urethane cleavage seems to be catalyzed by an isourethane, leading to an observed 2nd-order dependence of the reaction rate on the urethane concentration. The results of our study support a deeper understanding of the reactions as well as a better description of reaction kinetics and will therefore help in catalyst development and process optimization.

CO Activation Using Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Nanotubes for Reductive Carbonylation of Nitroaromatics to Benzimidazolinone and Phenyl Urea

Carbonylation of nitroaromatics with CO is extensively investigated with efficient but precious group 8-10 metal-based catalysts for the productions of both industrially and academically important chemicals such as isocyanates, formamides, carbamates, ureas and several types of heterocyclic compounds. Herein, we report that rationally designed nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (N-CNTs) exhibit catalytic activity toward CO activation for carbonylation of nitroaromatics to benzimidazolinones and ureas. Under the optimal conditions, N-CNT-promoted intramolecular carbonylation of 2-nitroaniline (1a) with CO leads to formation of 1,3-dihydro-2H-benzo[d]imidazol-2-one in 90% yield. Moreover, an intermolecular carbonylation of nitrobenzene and aniline with CO in the presence of the N-CNT gives 70% yield of N,N'-diphenylurea. The N-CNT is also applicable to various benzimidazolinones and phenyl ureas; moreover, it can be readily reused at least 9 times for the carbonylation. The theoretical investigation based on density functional theory calculations indicates that the graphitic N of the N-CNT plays a crucial step in the 1a reduction with CO. The correlation between the structural defect and catalytic performance of the N-CNT reveals an enhanced catalytic activity of the N-CNT with its increased structural defects. This research thus represents a major breakthrough in CO activation for nitroaromatic carbonylation with environmental-friendly, low-cost, and carbon-based catalysts as a potential alternative to expensive and scarce noble-metal-based catalysts.

Formation and Depolymerization of Oligomers during Thermal Cracking of Silicon-Containing Carbamates

Polymerization reactions in the thermal cracking of N-substituted carbamates to produce the corresponding isocyanates significantly reduce the yield of isocyanates and thus vastly hinder the industrial application of such non-phosgene routes. Herein, we tried to recycle the oligomers generated during the thermal cracking of 3-ethylcarbamatopropyltriethoxysilane (CPTS) to produce 3-isocyanatopropyltriethoxysilane (IPTS). Firstly, the polymerized substrates of the pyrolysis reaction were analyzed by NMR, IR, MALDI-TOF-MS and TG, indicating the pyrolysis substrates were mixtures of CPTS (25 wt%), polyureas (74 wt%), imines, and other compounds (<1 wt %). The polyureas were generated by reaction of CPTS and IPTS. Then, the depolymerization of these polyureas was realized via alcoholysis in the presence of urea. It was found that the urea not only provides a carbonyl group source, but also forms hydrogen bonds with polyureas. In addition, NH₃ co-produced can also modify the reaction system microenvironment, which might be favorable for the dissociation of polyureas. With optimized conditions, more than 96 % of polymerized substrates could be reverted to CPTS for secondary cracking.

CO2 Capture and in situ Catalytic Transformation

The escalating rate of fossil fuel combustion contributes to excessive CO₂ emission and the resulting global climate change has drawn considerable attention. Therefore, tremendous efforts have been devoted to mitigate the CO₂ accumulation in the atmosphere. Carbon capture and storage (CCS) strategy has been regarded as one of the promising options for controlling CO₂ build-up. However, desorption and compression of CO₂ need extra energy input. To circumvent this energy issue, carbon capture and utilization (CCU) strategy has been proposed whereby CO₂ can be captured and in situ activated simultaneously to participate in the subsequent conversion under mild conditions, offering valuable compounds. As an alternative to CCS, the CCU has attracted much concern. Although various absorbents have been developed for the CCU strategy, the direct, in situ chemical conversion of the captured CO₂ into valuable chemicals remains in its infancies compared with the gaseous CO₂ conversion. This review summarizes the recent progress on CO₂ capture and in situ catalytic transformation. The contents are introduced according to the absorbent types, in which different reaction type is involved and the transformation mechanism of the captured CO₂ and the role of the absorbent in the conversion are especially elucidated. We hope this review can shed light on the transformation of the captured CO₂ and arouse broad concern on the CCU strategy.

Optimisation by Design of Experiment of Benzimidazol-2-One Synthesis under Flow Conditions

A novel flow-based approach for the preparation of benzimidazol-2-one (1) scaffold by the 1,1′-carbonyldiimidazole (CDI)-promoted cyclocarbonylation of o-phenylenediamine (2) is reported. Starting from a preliminary batch screening, the model reaction was successfully translated under flow conditions and optimised by means of design of experiment (DoE). The method allowed the efficient preparation of this privileged scaffold and to set up a general protocol for the multigram-scale preparation in high yield, purity, and productivity, and was successfully applied for the multigram flow synthesis of N-(2-chlorobenzyl)-5-cyano-benzimidazol-2-one, which is a key synthon for hit-to-lead explorations in our anti-inflammatory drug discovery program.

Recovery of the polymers formed during thermal cracking of N-substituted dicarbamates over Fe–Ni/Al2O3
