Abstract
Clarification and control of the active sites at the atomic/molecular level are important to develop nanocatalysts. The catalytic performance of two oxidation states of nitrate-incorporating octadecavanadates, [V18O46(NO3)]5- (V18) and [V18O46(NO3)]4- (V18ox), and a copper-substituted one, [Cu2V16O44(NO3)]5- (Cu2V16), in selective oxidation was investigated. Both V18 and V18ox possessed the same double-helical structures and one of two tetravalent vanadium sites of V18 was oxidized in V18ox. The comparison of the mobility of the incorporated nitrate reveals that tetravalent vanadium centres show stronger interaction with the incorporated anions than pentavalent ones. The oxidation reaction with V18ox proceeded more smoothly with tert-BuOOH as an oxidant than that with V18. The reactivity and selectivity of the oxidation of 2-cyclohexen-1-ol were different among the derivatives. V18ox showed the higher reactivity with 72% selectivity to epoxide. With V18, reactivity was lower but higher selectivity to epoxide was achieved. In the presence of Cu2V16, 2-cyclohexen-1-one was selectively obtained with 81% selectivity. The order of the reactivity for cyclooctene was V18ox, V18 and Cu2V16. These results shows that the cap part of the double-helix acts as the active site. Even though the vanadium-oxygen species exhibit the same structures, the catalytic properties can be controlled by changing the valence of vanadium and metal substitution.

Abstract
We demonstrate the first formation of stable, multistate switchable monolayers of polyoxometalates (POMs), which can be electronically triggered to higher charged states with increased conductance in the current-voltage profile at room temperature. These responsive two-dimensional monolayers are based on a fully oxidised dodecavanadate cage (POV12) equipped with Dy(III)-doped phthalocyanine (Pc) macrocycles adopting the face-on orientation on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG). The layers can be lithographically processed by the tip of a scanning tunnelling microscope (STM) to machine patterns with diameters ranging from 30 to 150 nm2.

Abstract
A series of {V12}-nuclearity polyoxovanadate cages covalently functionalized with one or sandwiched by two phthalocyaninato (Pc) lanthanide (Ln) moieties via V-O-Ln bonds were prepared and fully characterized for paramagnetic Ln = SmIII-ErIII and diamagnetic Ln = LuIII, including YIII. The LnPc-functionalized {V12O32} cages with fully oxidized vanadium centers in the ground state were isolated as (nBu4N)3[HV12O32Cl(LnPc)] and (nBu4N)2[HV12O32Cl(LnPc)2] compounds. As corroborated by a combined experimental (EPR, DC and AC SQUID, laser photolysis transient absorption spectroscopy, and electrochemistry) and computational (DFT, MD, and model Hamiltonian approach) methods, the compounds feature intra- and intermolecular electron transfer that is responsible for a partial reduction at V(3d) centers from VV to VIV in the solid state and at high sample concentrations. The effects are generally Ln dependent and are clearly demonstrated for the (nBu4N)3[HV12O32Cl(LnPc)] representative with Ln = LuIII or DyIII. Intramolecular charge transfer takes place for Ln = LuIII and occurs from a Pc ligand via the Ln center to the {V12O32} core of the same molecule, whereas for Ln = DyIII, only intermolecular charge transfer is allowed, which is realized from Pc in one molecule to the {V12O32} core of another molecule usually via the nBu4N+ countercation. For all Ln but DyIII, two of these phenomena may be present in different proportions. Besides, it is demonstrated that (nBu4N)3[HV12O32Cl(DyPc)] is a field-induced single molecule magnet with a maximal relaxation time of the order 10-3 s. The obtained results open up the way to further exploration and fine-tuning of these three modular molecular nanocomposites regarding tailoring and control of their Ln-dependent charge-separated states (induced by intramolecular transfer) and relaxation dynamics as well as of electron hopping between molecules. This should enable us to realize ultra-sensitive polyoxometalate powered quasi-superconductors, sensors, and data storage/processing materials for quantum technologies and neuromorphic computing.

Abstract
Polyoxometalates (POMs) have emerged as material of interest in many applications such as energy storage and conversion due to their redox activity and molecularly defined structure. However, especially for polyoxovanadates a lack of understanding between structural modifications and physicochemical properties remains. The present study leverages a lacunary dodecavanadate to systematically investigate the electronic effect of heterometal functionalization. While structural distortion affects the stability of the cluster, the redox potentials correlate with the overall cluster charge. Furthermore, we report the first bromide-templated analogue of this cluster family. While the halide anion is crucial for the formation of the cluster, no major effect on the electrochemical properties is observed. By improving the understanding of structure-property relationship in this work, we hope to enable a more predictable tuning of redox-properties of polyoxovandates.

Abstract
Two mixed-valence octadecavanadates, (NH4)2(Me4N)5[VIV12VV6O42I]·Me4NI·5H2O (V18I) and [{K6(OH2)12VIV11VV7O41(PO4)·4H2O}n] (V18P), were synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis and FTIR, Raman, 51V NMR, EPR and UV/Vis/NIR spectroscopies. The chemoprotective activity of V18I and V18P towards the alkylating agent diethyl sulfate was assessed in E. coli cultures. The complex V18I was nontoxic in concentrations up to 5.0 mmol L-1, while V18P presented moderate toxicity in the concentration range 0.10 - 10 mmol L-1. Conversely, a ca. 35% enhancement in culture growth as compared to cells treated only with diethyl sulfate was observed upon addition of V18I (0.10 to 2.5 mmol L-1), while the combination of diethyl sulfate with V18P increased the cytotoxicity presented by diethyl sulfate alone. 51V NMR and EPR speciation studies showed that V18I is stable in solution, while V18P suffers partial breakage to give low nuclearity oxidometalates of vanadium(V) and (IV). According to the results, the chemoprotective effect depends strongly on the direct reactivity of the polyoxidovanadates (POV) towards the alkylating agent. The reaction of diethyl sulfate with V18I apparently produces a new, rearranged POV instead of poorly-reactive breakage products, while V18P shows the formation and subsequent consumption of low-nuclearity species. The correlation of this chemistry with that of other mixed-valence polyoxidovanadates, [H6VIV2VV12O38PO4]5- (V14) and [VIV8VV7O36Cl]6- (V15), suggests a relationship between stability in solution and chemoprotective performance.

Abstract
Polyoxovanadate (POV) clusters are an important subclass of polyoxometalates with a broad range of molecular compositions and physicochemical properties. One relatively underdeveloped application of these polynuclear assemblies involves their use as atomically precise, homogenous molecular models for bulk metal oxides. Given the structural and electronic similarities of POVs and extended vanadium oxide materials, as well as the relative ease of modifying the homogenous congeners, investigation of the chemical and physical properties of pristine and modified cluster complexes presents a method toward understanding the influence of structural modifications (e.g. crystal structure/phase, chemical makeup of surface ligands, elemental dopants) on the properties of extended solids. This review summarises recent advances in the use of POV clusters as atomically precise models for bulk metal oxides, with particular focus on the assembly of vanadium oxide clusters and the consequences of altering the molecular composition of the assembly via organofunctionalization and the incorporation of elemental "dopants".

Abstract
Dodecavanadate, [V12 O32 ]4- (V12), possesses a 4.4 Å cavity entrance, and the cavity shows unique electrophilicity. Owing to the high polarizability, Br2 was inserted into V12, inducing the inversion of one of the VO5 square pyramids to form [V12 O32 (Br2 )]4- (V12(Br2)). The inserted Br2 molecule was polarized and showed a peak at 185 cm-1 in the IR spectrum. The reaction of V12(Br2) and toluene yielded bromination of toluene at the ring, showing the electrophilicity of the inserted Br2 molecule. Compound V12(Br2) also reacted with propane, n-butane, and n-pentane to give brominated alkanes. Bromination with V12(Br2) showed high selectivity for 3-bromopentane (64 %) among the monobromopentane products and preferred threo isomer among 2-,3-dibromobutane and 2,3-dibromopenane. The unique inorganic cavity traps Br2 leading the polarization of the diatomic molecule. Owing to its new reaction field, the trapped Br2 shows selective functionalization of alkanes.

Abstract
Mixed-valent polyoxometalate (POM) clusters are one of the most interesting host species, showing a wide range of structural features and properties. The facile preparation and functionalisation of a mixed-valent polyoxofluorovanadates is reported, where two electrons are trapped to antipodal sites of the clusters. The first members of this family of clusters with the general formula, [VV12 VIV2 O16 (μ-O)10 (μ3 -O)10 (μ3 -F)2 (L)2 ]6- , where L: py=pyridine (1); pyr=pyrazine (2); im=imidazole (3), are unique organic-inorganic hybrids with the addition of a N-donor ligand at either end of the polyoxofluorovanadate. The composition and connectivity of 1-3 were characterised by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and electrospray ionisation mass spectrometry. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy revealed that the two well-separated VIV ions in each cluster are fully uncoupled with J=0, giving a degenerate singlet-triplet ground state. This attenuation of the exchange interaction is probed with density functional theoretical calculations that reveal that the inclusion of the fluoride ion in the cluster produces a bond pathway biased toward destructive interference between competing ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions. These robust molecular materials are the ideal combination of desirable electronic properties, with an organic handle with which they can be integrated into spintronic circuitry for molecular devices.

Compounds [Bu4N]2[V8O16(oda)4⊂2Cl], 1, [Bu4N]2[V8O16(glut)4⊂2Cl], 2, and [Bu4N][V4O8(glut)2⊂F], 3, (oda = oxydiacetate, O(CH2COO)22-; glut = glutarate, CH2(CH2COO)22-) were obtained by a stepwise reaction of in situ prepared [Bu4N]VO3 with HCl (or HF for 3) and then with the dicarboxylic acid X(CH2COOH)2 (X = O and CH2), under appropriate reaction conditions. Multinuclear magnetic resonance (1H, 13C{1H}, 35Cl, 19F and 51V), electrochemical studies, X-ray structural determinations (single crystal and powder), thermogravimetric analyses (TGA) and Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations were employed to characterise these polyoxovanadate complexes 1-3. They included encapsulated halide anions, two chloride ions in 1 and 2 and one fluoride ion in 3, where the shape and dimensions of the cage were governed by the halide size. The stabilizing template effect of the chloride ion towards the bowl-shaped [V4O8(OOCR)4] fragment (i.e. the half part of 1 and 2), containing a crown-shaped {V4O8} subunit, or that of the fluoride ion towards the planar {V4O8} moiety in 3, was definitively demonstrated by DFT calculations. The HOMO composition of 1 prompted us to study the possible oxidation of the two encapsulated chloride ions toward a chlorine molecule. The electrochemical behaviors of 1-3 were thus investigated. However, the chlorine molecule in the model [V8O16(oda)4⊂(Cl2)], 6c, was not capable to stabilise the polyoxovanadate cage [V8O16(oda)4], 4c, according to DFT calculations.

Abstract
The bioconjugation of a polyoxometalate (POMs), i.e., dodecavanadate (V12O32), to DNA strands produces a functional labeled DNA primer, V12O32-DNA. The grafting of DNA primer onto streptavidin-coated magnetic nanoparticles (SVM) produces a novel composite, V12O32-DNA@SVM. The high binding-affinity of V12O32 with the ATP binding site in myosin subfragment-1 (S1) facilitates favorable adsorption of myosin, with an efficiency of 99.4% when processing 0.1 mL myosin solution (100 μg mL-1) using 0.1 mg composite. Myosin adsorption fits the Langmuir model, corresponding to a theoretical adsorption capacity of 613.5 mg g-1. The retained myosin is readily recovered by 1% SDS (m/m), giving rise to a recovery of 58.7%. No conformational change is observed for myosin after eliminating SDS by ultrafiltration. For practical use, high-purity myosin S1 is obtained by separation of myosin from the rough protein extract from porcine left ventricle, followed by digestion with α-chymotryptic and further isolation of S1 subfragment. The purified myosin S1 is identified with matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight/mass spectrometry, giving rise to a sequence coverage of 38%.

Abstract
The dodecavanadate framework, [V12O32]4-, exhibits a unique bowl-type structure with an open molecular oxide cage having a cavity diameter of 4.4 Å, and different synthetic paths were required to construct the bowl-type structure with a different guest. A new dodecavanadate, {(n-C4H9)4N}4[V12O32(CH3NO2)] (1), is synthesized with a nitromethane guest, which is stacked above the entrance of the hemisphere rather than fully occupying the cavity, and it enables a guest-capturing reaction, while retaining the anionic cage structure. Compound 1 is a good precursor for halide-centered dodecavanadates, {(C2H5)4N}5[V12O32(X)] (X = Cl- (2), Br- (3), and I- (4)). The position of the halide inside the cavity correlates with the ionic radius of the guest; the small chloride ion sat at the far bottom, and the large iodide floated at the entrance. The inclusion reaction rates were estimated through 51V NMR time-course measurements in nitromethane. The reaction rates increase in the order I- < Br- < Cl-.

Abstract
Polyoxovanadates (POVs), known for their wide applicability and relevance in chemical, physical and biological sciences, are a subclass of polyoxometalates and usually self-assemble in aqueous-phase, pH-controlled condensation reactions. Archetypical POVs such as the robust [VO42](12-) polyoxoanion can be structurally, electronically and magnetically altered by heavier group 14 and 15 elements to afford Si-, Ge-, As- or Sb-decorated POV structures (heteroPOVs). These main-group semimetals introduce specific chemically engineered functionalities which cause the generally hydrophilic heteroPOV compounds to exhibit interesting reactivity towards organic molecules, late transition metal and lanthanoid ions. The fully-oxidised (V(V)), mixed-valent (V(V)/V(IV) and V(IV)/V(III)), "fully-reduced" (V(IV)) and "highly-reduced" (V(III)) heteroPOVs possess a number of intriguing properties, ranging from catalytic to molecular magnet characteristics. Herein, we review key developments in the synthetic and structural chemistry as well as the reactivity of POVs functionalised with Si-, Ge-, As- or Sb-based heterogroups.

Abstract
The speciation studies of oxovanadates are essential to clarify their biological activities. We surveyed the distribution of oxovanadate species in the presence of halide anions with various acid concentrations in an aqueous mixed-solvent system. The presence of chloride, bromide, and iodide anions has no effects on the appearance of polyoxovanadate species observed in (51)V NMR. Those are the precedent formation of metavanadate species and decavanadates. The presence of fluoride anion during the addition of acids exhibits strong intervention in the polyoxovanadate equilibria and we found the subsequent formation of two polyoxovanadate species by (51)V NMR observation. From the estimated experimental condition, we isolated fluoride-incorporated polyoxovanadates {Et4N}4[V7O19F] and {Et4N}4[HV11O29F2], successfully. Polyanion [V7O19F](4-) is the fluoride-incorporated all V(V) state polyoxovanadate which has two different coordination environments of tetrahedral and square pyramidal vanadium units within the one anionic structural integrity. The structural gap between tetrahedral-unit-based metavanadate and octahedral-unit-based decavanadate structures may be linked by this hybrid complex.

Abstract
Mixed-valence polyoxovanadates(IV/V) have emerged as one of the most intricate class of supramolecular all-inorganic host species, able to encapsulate a wide variety of smaller guest templates during their self-assembly formation process. As showcased herein, the incorporation of guests, though governed solely by ultra-weak electrostatic and van der Waals interactions, can cause drastic effects on the electronic and magnetic characteristics of the shell complex of the polyoxovanadate. We address the question of methodology for the magnetochemical analysis of virtually isostructural {V(IV/V) 22 O54 }-type polyoxoanions of D2d symmetry enclosing diamagnetic VO2 F2 (-) (C2v ), SCN(-) (C∞v ), or ClO4 (-) (Td ) template anions. These induce different polarization effects related to differences in their geometric structures, symmetry, ion radii, and valence shells, eventually resulting in a supramolecular modulation of magnetic exchange between the V(3d) electrons that are partly delocalized over the {V22 O54 } shells. We also include the synthesis and characterization of the novel [V(V) O2 F2 @HV(IV) 8 V(V) 14 O54 ](6-) system that comprises the rarely encountered discrete difluorovanadate anion as a quasi-isolated guest species.

Abstract
Electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) combined with in-source fragmentation and tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) experiments were used to generate a wide range of singly and multiply charged vanadium oxide cluster anions including VxOy(n-) and VxOyCl(n-) ions (x = 1-14, y = 2-36, n = 1-3), protonated clusters, and ligand-bound polyoxovanadate anions. The cluster anions were produced by electrospraying a solution of tetradecavanadate, V14O36Cl(L)5 (L = Et4N(+), tetraethylammonium), in acetonitrile. Under mild source conditions, ESI-MS generates a distribution of doubly and triply charged VxOyCl(n-) and VxOyCl(L)((n-1)-) clusters predominantly containing 14 vanadium atoms as well as their protonated analogs. Accurate mass measurement using a high-resolution LTQ/Orbitrap mass spectrometer (m/Δm = 60,000 at m/z 410) enabled unambiguous assignment of the elemental composition of the majority of peaks in the ESI-MS spectrum. In addition, high-sensitivity mass spectrometry allowed the charge state of the cluster ions to be assigned based on the separation of the major from the much less abundant minor isotope of vanadium. In-source fragmentation resulted in facile formation of smaller VxOyCl((1-2)-) and VxOy ((1-2)-) anions. Collision-induced dissociation (CID) experiments enabled systematic study of the gas-phase fragmentation pathways of the cluster anions originating from solution and from in-source CID. Surprisingly simple fragmentation patterns were obtained for all singly and doubly charged VxOyCl and VxOy species generated through multiple MS/MS experiments. In contrast, cluster anions originating directly from solution produced comparatively complex CID spectra. These results are consistent with the formation of more stable structures of VxOyCl and VxOy anions through low-energy CID. Furthermore, our results demonstrate that solution-phase synthesis of one precursor cluster anion combined with gas-phase CID is an efficient approach for the top-down synthesis of a wide range of singly and multiply charged gas-phase metal oxide cluster anions for subsequent investigations of structure and reactivity using mass spectrometry and ion spectroscopy techniques.
