Abstract
We report the electron transfer (ET) dynamics in a series of Ir(III)-Re(I) photocatalysts where two bipyridyl ligands of Ir and Re moieties are conjugated at the meta (m)- or para (p)-position of each side. Femtosecond transient absorption (TA) measurements identify the intramolecular ET (IET) dynamics from the Ir to Re moiety, followed by the formation of one-electron-reduced species (OERS) via the intermolecular ET with a sacrificial electron donor (SED). The IET rate depends on the bridging ligand (BL) structures (∼25 ps for BLmm/mp vs ∼68 ps for BLpm/pp), while the OERS formation happens on an even slower time scale (∼1.4 ns). Connecting the Re moiety at the meta-position of the bipyridyl of the Ir moiety can restrict the rotation around a covalent bond between two bipyridyl ligands by steric hindrances and facilitate the IET process. This highlights the importance of BL structures on the ET dynamics in photocatalysts.

Heteroleptic Ir(III)-based near-infrared organic light-emitting diodes with high radiance capacity. Sci Rep 2023; 13:1369. Abstract
Near-infrared organic light-emitting diodes (NIR OLEDs) with heavy metals are regularly reported due to the advantages of their various applications in healthcare services, veil authentication, and night vision displays. For commercial applications, it is necessary to look at radiance capacity (RC) instead of radiance because of power consumption. However, recent papers still reported only simple high radiance performance and do not look at device from the point of view of RC. To overcome this hurdle, we designed Ir(III)-based heteroleptic NIR materials with two types of auxiliary ligand. The proposed emitters achieve a highly oriented horizontal dipole ratio (Ir(mCPDTiq)2tmd, complex 1: 80%, Ir(mCPDTiq)2acac, complex 2: 81%) with a short radiative lifetime (1: 386 ns, 2: 323 ns). The device also shows an extremely low turn-on voltage (Von) of 2.2 V and a high RC of 720 mW/sr/m2/V. The results on the Von and RC of the device is demonstrated an outstanding performance among the Ir(III)-based NIR OLEDs with a similar emission peak.

Abstract
The synthesis and characterization of water-soluble copolymers containing N,N-dimethylacrylamide (DMAM) and a vinylic monomer containing an Iridium(III), Ir(III), complex substituted with the quinoline-based unit 2-(pyridin-2-ylo)-6-styrene-4-phenylquinoline (VQPy) as ligand are reported. These copolymers were prepared through pre- or post-polymerization complexation of Ir(III) with the VQPy units. The first methodology led to copolymer P1 having fully complexed VQPy units, whereas the latter methodology allowed the preparation of terpolymers containing free and Ir(III)-complexed VQPy units (copolymer P2). The optical properties of the copolymers were studied in detail through UV-Vis and photoluminescence spectroscopy in aqueous solution. It is shown that the metal-to-ligand charge transfer (ΜLCT) emission is prevailing in the case of P1, regardless of pH. In contrast, in the case of terpolymer P2 the MLCT emission of the Ir(III) complex is combined with the pH-responsive emission of free VQPy units, leading to characteristic pH-responsive color changes under UV illumination in the acidic pH region.

Abstract
A synthetic methodology to prepare iridium(III) emitters of the class [3b+3b+3b'] with two ortho-metalated 1-phenylisoquinolines and an asymmetrical β-diketonate has been discovered. The abstraction of the chloride ligands of the dimer [Ir(μ-Cl){κ2-C,N-(C6H4-isoqui)}2]2 (1, C6H5-isoqui = 1-phenylisoquinoline) with AgBF4 in acetone and the subsequent addition of water to the resulting solution affords the water solvate mononuclear complex [Ir{κ2-C,N-(C6H4-isoqui)}2(H2O)2]BF4 (2), which reacts with KOH to give the dihydroxo-bridged dimer [Ir(μ-OH){κ2-C,N-(C6H4-isoqui)}2]2 (3). Treatment of the latter with dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate leads to Ir{κ2-C,N-(C6H4-isoqui)}2{κ2-O,O-[OC(CO2CH3)CHC(OCH3)O]} (4), as a result of the anti-addition of the O-H bond of a mononuclear [Ir(OH){κ2-C,N-(C6H4-isoqui)}2] fragment to the C-C triple bond of the alkyne and the coordination of one of the carboxylate substituents to the metal center. Complex 3 also reacts with α,β-unsaturated ketones. The reaction with 3-(4-methylphenyl)-1-phenylprop-2-en-1-one affords Ir{κ2-C,N-(C6H4-isoqui)}2{κ2-O,O-[OC(C6H5)CHC(p-C6H4Me)O]} (5), whereas methyl vinyl ketone gives a mixture of Ir{κ2-C,N-(C6H4-isoqui)}2{κ2-O,O-[OC(CH3)CHCHO]} (6) and Ir{κ2-C,N-(C6H4-isoqui)}2{κ2-O,O-[OC(CH3)CHC(CH═CH2)O]} (7). Complexes 5 and 6 are the result of the addition of the O-H bond of the mononuclear [Ir(OH){κ2-C,N-(C6H4-isoqui)}2] fragment to the C-C double bond of the α,β-unsaturated ketones and the coordination of the carbonyl group to the iridium center, to generate O,O-chelates which lose molecular hydrogen to aromatize into the asymmetrical β-diketonate ligands. Complexes 4-7 are phosphorescent emitters in the red spectral region (599-672 nm) in doped poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) film at 5 wt % at room temperature and 2-methyltetrahydrofuran at room temperature and 77 K. They display short lifetimes (0.8-2.5 μs) and quantum yields in both doped PMMA films and in 2-methyltetrahydrofuran at room temperature depending on the substituents of the β-diketonate: about 0.6-0.5 for 4 and 6 and ca. 0.35 for 5 and 7.

Abstract
In this present work, we have developed a temperature sensitive ICT probe (KNP) to investigate alternation of ICT process with the temperature in polar protic solvents. The H-bonding interaction is found to play a key role on solute-solvent interaction to become a temperature sensitive ICT probe in solution. From temperature dependent UV-Vis spectra, it is cleared that the solute-solvent interaction is reversible in nature with temperature and affected by concentration in polar protic solvents. The reversible solute-solvent interaction is observed by monitoring the intensity variation of intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) band with temperature in solution.

Abstract
The fac-Ir(ppy)3 complex, where ppy denotes 2-phenylpyridine, is one of the well-known luminescent metal complexes having a high quantum yield. However, there have been no specific molecular design guidelines for color tuning. For example, it is still unclear how its optical properties are changed when changing substitution groups of ligands. Therefore, in this study, differences in the electronic structures and optical properties among several substituted fac-Ir(ppy)3 derivatives are examined in detail by density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) calculations. On the basis of those results, we present rational design guidelines for absorption and emission color tuning by modifying the species of substituents and their substitution positions.

Abstract
Today organic light emitting diodes are a topic of significant academic and industrial research interest. OLED technology is used in commercially available displays, and efforts have been directed to improve this technology. Design and synthesis of phosphorescent based transition metals are capable of harvesting both singlet and triplet excitons and achieve 100 % internal quantum efficiency is an active area of research. Among all the transition metals, iridium is considered a prime candidate for OLEDs due to its prominent photophysical characteristics. In the present review, we have concentrated on the Iridium based homo and heteroleptic complexes that have dissimilar substitutions on phenylpyridine ligands, different ancillary ligands and the effect of substitution on HOMO/LUMO energies and a brief discussion and correlation on the photophysical, electrochemical and device performances of the different complexes have been reviewed for organic light emitting diodes.

Abstract
A structure-property relationship study of neutral heteroleptic (1 and 2, [Ir(C∧N)2(L∧X)]) and homoleptic (3 and 4, fac-[Ir(C∧N)3]) Ir(III) complexes (where L∧X = anionic 2,2,6,6-tetramethylheptane-3,5-dionato-κO3,κO6 (thd) and C∧N = a cyclometalating ligand bearing a pentafluorosulfanyl (-SF5) electron-withdrawing group (EWG) at the C4 (HL1) and C3 (HL2) positions of the phenyl moiety) is presented. These complexes have been fully structurally characterized, including by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, and their electrochemical and optical properties have also been extensively studied. While complexes 1 ([Ir(L1)2(thd)]), 3 (Ir(L1)3), and 4 (Ir(L2)3) exhibit irreversible first reduction waves based on the pentafluorosulfanyl substituent in the range of -1.71 to -1.88 V (vs SCE), complex 2 ([Ir(L2)2(thd)]) exhibits a quasi-reversible pyridineC∧N-based first reduction wave that is anodically shifted at -1.38 V. The metal + C∧N ligand oxidation waves are all quasi-reversible in the range of 1.08-1.54 V (vs SCE). The optical gap, determined from the lowest energy absorption maxima, decreases from 4 to 2 to 3 to 1, and this trend is consistent with the Hammett behavior (σm/σp with respect to the metal-carbon bond) of the -SF5 EWG. In degassed acetonitrile, for complexes 2-4, introduction of the -SF5 group produced a blue-shifted emission (λem 484-506 nm) in comparison to reference complexes [Ir(ppy)2(acac)] (R1, where acac = acetylacetonato) (λem 528 nm in MeCN), [Ir(CF3-ppy) (acac)] (R3, where CF3-ppyH = 2-(4-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)pyridine) (λem 522 nm in DCM), and [Ir(CF3-ppy)3] (R8) (λem 507 nm in MeCN). The emission of complex 1, in contrast, was modestly red shifted (λem 534 nm). Complexes 2 and 4, where the -SF5 EWG is substituted para to the Ir-CC∧N bond, are efficient phosphorescent emitters, with high photoluminescence quantum yields (ΦPL = 58-79% in degassed MeCN solution) and microsecond emission lifetimes (τε = 1.35-3.02 μs). Theoretical and experimental observations point toward excited states that are principally ligand centered (3LC) in nature, but with a minor metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (3MLCT) transition component, as a function of the regiochemistry of the pentafluorosulfanyl group. The 3LC character is predominant over the mixed 3CT character for complexes 1, 2, and 4, while in complex 3, there is exclusive 3LC character as demonstrated by unrestricted density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The short emission lifetimes and reasonable ΦPL values in doped thin film (5 wt % in PMMA), particularly for 4, suggest that these neutral complexes would be attractive candidate emitters in organic light-emitting diodes.

Abstract
Self-assembly based on reversible metal-ligand bond formation is useful for the synthesis of discrete supramolecular nanoarchitectures. However, the architectures constructed by this technique sometimes suffer from kinetic instability due to the dissociation of metal-ligand bonds, especially under highly diluted conditions or in the presence of competitive ligands or metal ions. In this study, a kinetically stabilized metallomacrocycle was synthesized in one pot via the combination of metal-mediated self-assembly and subsequent oxidative "locking" of the coordination bonds. The macrocycle consists of four Co ions and four bis-bidentate ligands L(2-). The complexation of labile Co(II) ions with the ligands afforded the macrocycle with four-fold rotational symmetry, exhibiting the right-angled geometries of the β-diketonate ligands on the carbazole. The subsequent oxidation of the Co(II) ions inside the macrocycle into Co(III) ions made the metal-ligand bonds almost inert, thus affording a kinetically locked 4 : 4 metallomacrocycle. This macrocycle showed high stability even in the presence of an excess amount of competitive ligands. X-ray crystallography of the macrocycle indicated that it assembled in a columnar manner, forming one-dimensional nanochannels in the middle of the column.

Abstract
Owing to the electron spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and fast intersystem crossing (ISC), heavy-metal complexes (such as iridium(III), platinum(II) and osmium(II) complexes, etc.) are phosphorescent emitters at room temperature. Since 1998, heavy-metal complexes as phosphors have received considerable academic and industrial attention in the field of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), because they can harvest both the singlet (25%) and triplet (75%) excitons for emission during the electro-generated processes. Among all the visible colors (blue, green, yellow, orange and red), the yellow/orange heavy-metal complexes play an important role for realizing full-color OLEDs as well as high-efficiency white OLEDs, and thus the development of highly efficient yellow/orange heavy-metal complexes is a pressing concern. In this article, we will review the progress on yellow/orange heavy-metal complexes as phosphors in OLEDs. The general principles and useful tactics for designing the yellow/orange heavy-metal complexes will be systematically summarized. The structure-property relationship and electrophosphorescence performance of the yellow/orange heavy-metal complexes in monochromatic phosphorescent OLEDs (PhOLEDs) and white OLEDs (WOLEDs) will be comprehensively surveyed and discussed.

Abstract
In the present paper, the photoredox catalysis is presented as a unique approach in the field of photoinitiators of polymerization. The principal photocatalysts already reported as well as the typical oxidation and reduction agents used in both reductive or oxidative cycles are gathered. The chemical mechanisms associated with various systems are also given. As compared to classical iridium-based photocatalysts which are mainly active upon blue light irradiation, a new photocatalyst Ir(piq)2(tmd) (also known as bis(1-phenylisoquinolinato-N,C (2'))iridium(2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-3,5-heptanedionate) is also proposed as an example of green light photocatalyst (toward the long wavelength irradiation). The chemical mechanisms associated with Ir(piq)2(tmd) are investigated by ESR spin-trapping, laser flash photolysis, steady state photolysis, cyclic voltammetry and luminescence experiments.

Abstract
The spectroscopic and photophysical properties of triarylborane derivatives were controlled by the nature of the triarylborane core (trixylyl- or trianthrylborane) and peripheral electron-donating groups (N,N-diphenylamino or 9H-carbazolyl groups). The triarylborane derivatives with and without the electron-donating groups showed intramolecular charge-transfer absorption/fluorescence transitions between the π orbital of the aryl group (π(aryl)) and the vacant p orbital on the boron atom (p(B), π(aryl)-p(B) CT), and the fluorescence color was tunable from blue to red by the combination of peripheral electron-donating groups and a triarylborane core. Detailed electrochemical, spectroscopic, and photophysical studies of the derivatives, including solvent dependences of the spectroscopic and photophysical properties, demonstrated that the HOMO and LUMO of each derivative were determined primarily by the nature of the peripheral electron-donating group and the triarylborane core, respectively. The effects of solvent polarity on the fluorescence quantum yield and lifetime of the derivatives were also tunable by the choice of the triarylborane core.

Abstract
The first reported combination of regioselective hydro-defluorination and a ligand exchange reaction during the syntheses of neutral iridium(III) complexes is presented. Surprisingly, loss of one fluorine atom per ligand combined with a complete ligand exchange reaction on the transition metal were jointly observed during a bridge-splitting and substitution reaction of two different dimeric iridium(III) precursor complexes with two different ancillary ligands. The regioselectivity of defluorination was evidenced in both cases. The reaction time was identified as a factor strongly impacting the kinetics of the thermally induced reaction.

Abstract
The use of density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) to study the photochemistry of metal complexes is becoming increasingly important among chemists. Computational methods provide unique information on the electronic nature of excited states and their atomic structure, integrating spectroscopy observations on transient species and excited-state dynamics. In this contribution, we present an overview on photochemically active transition metal complexes investigated by DFT. In particular, we discuss a representative range of systems studied up to now, which include CO- and NO-releasing inorganic and organometallic complexes, haem and haem-like complexes dissociating small diatomic molecules, photoactive anti-cancer Pt and Ru complexes, Ru polypyridyls and diphosphino Pt derivatives.
