Abstract
Ketenyl lithium compounds of type [RC(Li)CO] (with R = Ph2P(E), E = O, S, Se) were found to exhibit lower thermal stabilities than their potassium analogues due to the stronger coordination of the oxygen of the ketene moiety to the harder metal cation, resulting in a more pronounced ynolate character. Using additional ligands allows manipulation of the O-Li interaction, thereby influencing the stability and reactivity of the ketenyl anions.

Abstract
In this paper, palladium-catalyzed [3 + 2] cycloaddition of 4-vinyl-4-butyrolactones with ketenes generated from easily available acyl chlorides was achieved. With Pd2(dba)3·CHCl3/XantPhos as the catalyst, the reaction proceeded smoothly under mild reaction conditions, affording a series of 2,3-dihydrofurans in moderate to high yields. The scale-up reaction and further transformations of the products are demonstrated, and a plausible mechanism is proposed as well.

Abstract
This study presents a comprehensive analysis of nickel-phosphine complexes, specifically Ni(PH3)2(OCCH2), Ni(PH3)2(H2CCO), Ni(PH3)2(H2CCCH2), Ni(PH3)2(NNCH2), and Ni(PH3)2(η1-H2CNN). Utilizing ETS-NOCV analysis, we explored orbital energy decomposition and the Hirshfeld charges of the ligands, providing insights into the electronic structures and donor-acceptor interactions within these complexes. The interactions in the ketene and allene complexes exhibit similar deformation densities and NOCV orbital shapes to those calculated for Ni(PH3)2(NNCH2), indicating consistent interaction characteristics across these complexes. The total interaction energy for all η2 complexes is observed to be over 60 kcal/mol, slightly exceeding that of the analogous carbon dioxide complex reported earlier. Furthermore, the study highlights the stronger back-donation as compared to donor interactions across all η2 complexes. This is further corroborated by Hirshfeld analysis, revealing the charge distribution dynamics within the ligand fragments. The research offers new perspectives on the electron distribution and interaction energies in nickel-phosphine complexes, contributing to a deeper understanding of their catalytic and reactive behaviors.

Abstract
α-Metallated ylides have recently been reported to undergo phosphine by CO exchange at the ylidic carbon atom to form isolable ketenyl anions. Systematic studies on the tosyl-substituted yldiides, R3 P=C(M)Ts (M=Li, Na, K), now reveal that carbonylation may lead to a competing metal salt (MTs) elimination. This side-reaction can be controlled by the choice of phosphine, metal cation, solvent and co-ligands, thus enabling the selective isolation of the ketenyl anion [Ts-CCO]M (2-M). Complexation of 2-Na by crown ether or cryptand allowed structure elucidation of the first free ketenyl anion [Ts-CCO]- , which showed an almost linear Ts-C-C linkage indicative for a pronounced ynolate character. However, DFT studies support a high charge at the ketenyl carbon atom, which is reflected in the selective carbon-centered reactivity. Overall, the present study provides important information on the selectivity control of ketenyl anion formation which will be crucial for future applications.

Abstract
The development of intermolecular [2+2] cycloadditions between allenamides and diarylketenes is described. α-Aryldiazo arylketones are employed as ketene precursors that react smoothly with allenamides in the presence of a P(C6F5)3 promoter. High diastereoselectivity (dr > 20 : 1) with endo-regioselectivity can be achieved when two aryl groups of ketenes have opposite electronic properties. The role of P(C6F5)3 is to increase the reaction yields, but also enhancing stereoselectivity.

Abstract
ConspectusCycloaddition reactions are an effective method to quickly build molecular complexity. As predicted by the Woodward-Hoffmann rules, concerted cycloadditions with alkenes allow for the constructions of all possible stereoisomers of product by use of either the Z or E geometry. While this feature of cycloadditions is widely used in, for example, [4 + 2] cycloadditions, translation to [2 + 2] cycloadditions is challenging because of the often stepwise and therefore stereoconvergent nature of these processes. Over the past decade, our lab has explored Lewis acid-promoted [2 + 2] cycloadditions of electron-deficient allenes or ketenes with alkenes. The concerted, asynchronous cycloadditions allow for the synthesis of various cyclobutanes with control of stereochemistry. Our lab developed the first examples of Lewis acid-promoted ketene-alkene [2 + 2] cycloadditions. Compared with traditional thermal conditions, Lewis acid-promoted conditions have several advantages, such as increased reactivity, increased yield, improved diastereoselectivity, and, for certain cases, inverse diastereoselectivity. Detailed mechanistic studies revealed that the diastereoselectivity was controlled by the size of the substituent and the barrier of a deconjugation event. However, these reactions required the use of stoichiometric amounts of EtAlCl2 because of the product inhibition, which led us to investigate catalytic enantioselective [2 + 2] cycloadditions of allenoates with alkenes. Through the use of chiral oxazaborolidines, a broad range of cyclobutanes can be prepared with the control of enantioselectivity. Mechanistic experiments, including 2D-labled alkenes and Hammett analysis, illuminate likely transition state models for the cycloadditions. Additional studies led to the development of Lewis acid-catalyzed intramolecular stereoselective [2 + 2] cycloadditions of chiral allenic ketones/esters with alkenes. The methods we developed have been instrumental in the synthesis of several families of natural products. Specifically, one key lactone motif in (±)-gracilioether F was constructed by a ketene-alkene [2 + 2] cycloaddition and subsequent regioselective Baeyer-Villiger oxidation sequence. Enantioselective allenoate-alkene [2 + 2] cycloadditions allowed for the synthesis of (-)-hebelophyllene E. Another attempt of applying this method in the synthesis of (+)-[5]-ladderanoic acid failed to deliver the desired cyclobutane because of an unexpected rearrangement. The key cyclobutane was later assembled by a stepwise carboboration/Zweifel olefination process. Finally, the stereoselective [2 + 2] cycloadditions of allenic ketones and alkenes was applied in the syntheses of (-)-[3]-ladderanol, (+)-hippolide J, and (-)-cajanusine.

Abstract
The reactivity of a literature-known, ring-strained bismuth amide cation towards a range of unsymmetric heterocumulene substrates has been investigated. Reactions with ketenes R2 C=C=O (R=Me, Ph), isocyanates R'N=C=O, and isothiocyanates R'N=C=S (R'=Ph, 4-CF3 -C6 H4 ) proceed via facile insertion of the heterocumulene in the Bi-N bond of the cationic bismuth amide. Unexpectedly pronounced differences in the regioselectivity of these insertion reactions have been observed, yielding a rich variety of heterocycle motifs (BiC2 NC2 , BiC2 NCO, BiC2 NCS, BiC2 NCN), some of which are unprecedented. Parameters that control the regioselectivity of the insertion reactions have been identified and are discussed based on experimental and theoretical investigations. Analytical techniques applied in this work include heteronuclear and two-dimensional NMR spectroscopy, IR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses, and DFT calculations.

Abstract
Keteniminium ions, the nitrogen analogues of ketenes, exhibit high reactivity toward olefins and π-systems. Previous results from the Maulide group demonstrated an unexpected propensity for an alternative intramolecular Belluš-Claisen-type rearrangement rather than an expected intramolecular (2 + 2) cycloaddition. We have conducted a cooperative density functional theory/experimental investigation of this process, seeking insights into the competition between the observed Claisen-type reaction and the historically expected (2 + 2) cyclization. Our calculations revealed a surprisingly small difference in the free energy barrier between these two intramolecular reactions. Further theoretical and experimental investigations probe the electronics of the substrate, rationalize a competing deallylation side reaction, and demonstrate the proof-of-concept for an enantioselective (2 + 2) variant.

Abstract
We introduce a photochemical bond forming system, where two colours of light are required to trigger covalent bond formation. Specifically, we exploit a visible light cis/trans isomerization of chlorinated azobenzene, which can only undergo reaction with a photochemically generated ketene in its cis state. Detailed photophysical mapping of the reaction efficiencies at a wide range of monochromatic wavelengths revealed the optimum irradiation conditions. Subsequent small molecule and polymer ligation experiments illustrated that only the application of both colours of light affords the reaction product. We further extend the functionality to a photo reversible ketene moiety and translate the concept into material science. The presented reaction system holds promise to be employed as a two-colour resist. Dual-wavelength photochemical systems open up new avenues for novel lithographic techniques but currently only few wavelength-orthogonal photoreactive compounds undergoing reversible photoreaction are known. Here, the authors exploit cis/trans photoisomerization of azobenzenes and demonstrate photoligation of the cis state with a photochemically generated ketene.

Abstract
Rapid construction of molecules bearing all-substituted quaternary stereocenters represents a highly significant but challenging task in organic synthesis. Herein, we report a novel palladium-catalyzed cascade between alkene-tethered aryl iodides and carbon monoxide, which has resulted in a practical and powerful method for the synthesis of complex polycyclic molecules containing aryl-substituted quaternary stereocenters. Mechanistic studies suggested that the reaction proceeded via a Heck-type carbonylative cyclization, followed by a ketene-involved Friedel-Crafts acylation.

Abstract
Described here is a Cu-catalyzed [2 + 2 + 1] modular synthesis of full-substituted β-pyrrolinones from simple amines, alkynes, and α-diazo-β-ketoesters. This approach involving the regioselective C-nucleophilic attack of enamines, uncommon C-nucleophilic addition to ketenes, and umpolung of imines enables the direct synthesis of full-substituted β-pyrrolinones, which were hardly constructed by traditional synthetic strategies.

Abstract
The mechanism of the carbonylation of diazomethane in the presence of iron–carbonyl–phosphine catalysts has been investigated by means of DFT calculations at the M06/def-TZVP//B97D3/def2-TZVP level of theory, in combination with the SMD solvation method. The reaction rate is determined by the formation of the coordinatively unsaturated doublet-state Fe(CO)3(P) precursor followed by the diazoalkane coordination and the N2 extrusion. The free energy of activation is predicted to be 18.5 and 28.2 kcal/mol for the PF3 and PPh3 containing systems, respectively. Thus, in the presence of less basic P-donor ligands with stronger π-acceptor properties, a significant increase in the reaction rate can be expected. According to energy decomposition analysis combined with natural orbitals of chemical valence (EDA–NOCV) calculations, diazomethane in the Fe(CO)3(phosphine)(η1-CH2N2) adduct reveals a π-donor–π-acceptor type of coordination.

Abstract
For the first time, a direct transformation of CO, NH3 , and primary amines into acetamides, mediated by a main-group element (silicon), is reported. Starting point is the selective deoxygenative reductive homocoupling of two CO molecules by the Fc-bis(silylene) 1 a (Fc=ferrocendiyl) as a reducing agent, which forms the ferrocendiyl-bridged disila(μ-O)(μ-CCO)ketene intermediate 2 a. Exposing 2 a to NH3 (1 bar, 298 K) and benzylamine yields the Fc-disiloxanediamines [Fc(RHNSi-O-SiNHR)] 5 a (R=H) and 5 b (R=benzyl) under release of the respective acetamides H3 CC(O)NHR, as confirmed by 13 C-isotope-labelling experiments. IR and NMR studies of the reaction reveal a four-step mechanism involving an N-silylated carboxamide that can be isolated and fully characterized. The striking reaction mechanism for this unprecedented transformation involves a facile Si-C bond cleavage and ammonolysis of a Si-O bond, and has been demonstrated experimentally and by quantum-chemical calculations.

Abstract
Meldrum's acid (MA) is utilized as a monomer to polymerize with diisocyanates to result in polyamides, containing MA moieties at polymer chains. This reaction is also employed to prepare isocyanate-terminated polyamide segments which are utilized as a precursor for preparation of MA-containing polyurethanes. Based on the thermolysis reaction of MA groups, followed by ketene dimerization reaction, the reactive polyamides and polyurethanes show self-cross-linkable features. The cross-linked polyurethanes exhibit good film formability, thermal stability, and mechanical properties. A new MA-based polymerization method and a novel synthesis route for preparation of reactive polyamides and polyurethanes are demonstrated.

Abstract
The reaction of ketene with hydroxyl radical is drawing growing attention, for it is found to constitute an important step during the combustion of hydrocarbon and oxygenated hydrocarbon fuels, e.g., acetylene, propyne, allene, acetone, gasoline, diesel, jet fuels, and biofuels. We studied the potential energy surface (PES) of this reaction using B2PLYP-D3/cc-PVTZ for geometry optimization and composite methods based on CCSD(T)-F12/cc-PVTZ-F12 for energy calculations. From this PES, temperature- and pressure-dependent rate coefficients and branching ratios at 200-3000 K and 0.01-100 atm were derived using the RRKM/ME approach. The reaction is dominated by four product channels: (i) OH addition on the olefinic carbon of ketene to form CH2OH + CO, which is the most dominant under all conditions; (ii) H abstraction producing HCCO + H2O, which is favored at high temperatures; (iii) OH addition on the carbonyl carbon to form CH3 + CO2, which is favored at low pressures and high temperatures; and (iv) collisional stabilization of CH2COOH, which is favored at high pressures and low temperatures. With increasing temperatures, the overall rate constant koverall exhibit first negative but then positive temperature dependency, with its switching point (also the minimum point) at ∼400 K. Both product channel CH2OH + CO and HCCO + H2O are independent of pressure, whereas formation of CH3 + CO2 and collisional stabilization of CH2COOH are highly pressure dependent. Fitted modified Arrhenius expressions of the calculated rate constants are provided for the purpose of combustion modeling.

Abstract
1,2-Carbon atom rearrangement has been broadly applied as a guiding strategy in complex molecule assembly. As it entails the carbon-carbon or carbon-heteroatom bond migration between two vicinal atoms, this type of reaction is capable of generating structural complexity through a molecular skeletal reorganization. This review will focus on recent employment of this strategy in the total synthesis of natural products, highlighting the exceptional utility of such synthetic methodologies in the construction of intricate carbocycles, heterocycles or structurally complex motifs from synthetically more accessible precursors.

Abstract
Visible-light photocatalysis has evolved over the last decade into a widely used method in organic synthesis. Photocatalytic variants have been reported for many important transformations, such as cross-coupling reactions, α-amino functionalizations, cycloadditions, ATRA reactions, or fluorinations. To help chemists select photocatalytic methods for their synthesis, we compare in this Review classical and photocatalytic procedures for selected classes of reactions and highlight their advantages and limitations. In many cases, the photocatalytic reactions proceed under milder reaction conditions, typically at room temperature, and stoichiometric reagents are replaced by simple oxidants or reductants, such as air, oxygen, or amines. Does visible-light photocatalysis make a difference in organic synthesis? The prospect of shuttling electrons back and forth to substrates and intermediates or to selectively transfer energy through a visible-light-absorbing photocatalyst holds the promise to improve current procedures in radical chemistry and to open up new avenues by accessing reactive species hitherto unknown, especially by merging photocatalysis with organo- or metal catalysis.

Abstract
On the basis of the reaction between ketene and alcohol groups to result in an ester linkage and Meldrum's acid as an effective precursor of ketene group, a bifunctional aliphatic Meldrum's acid compound (BisMA) is synthesized and used as a monomer to react with ethylene glycol and glycerol for the preparation of linear and cross-linked aliphatic polyesters, respectively. A 62 and 35 wt % of biodegradation fraction have been recorded on the linear and cross-linked aliphatic polyesters after an 8 week biodegradation test, respectively, to demonstrate the good biodegradability of the synthesized polyesters. In addition to conventional linear biodegradable polyesters, this synthetic route also provides a new and convenient method for preparation of cross-linked biodegradable polyesters. The types of the required monomers and reaction methods for preparation of the cross-linked biodegradable polyesters are similar to those used for conventional thermosetting resins. An integration of biodegradable polymers and thermosetting resins in polymer chemistry has been demonstrated.

Abstract
The jujubosides are saponin natural products reported to have immunoadjuvant, anticancer, antibacterial, antifungal, and antisweet activities. The triterpene component, jujubogenin contains a unique tricyclic ketal motif comprising the DEF ring system. Herein, we describe our efforts toward the total synthesis of jujubogenin, using a sterically-demanding intermolecular Diels-Alder reaction to assemble the C-ring and a tandem Wolff rearrangement-intramolecular ketene hetero-Diels-Alder reaction to form the DF-ring system. Acid-catalyzed cyclization of the resulting bicyclic enol ether then closes the E-ring to provide the hexacyclic core of jujubogenin.

Abstract
This paper reviews the photoinduced reactions of benzodioxinones and how they function in polymer synthesis and UV curing applications. The mechanistic characteristics of the ketene and benzophenone production from the photolysis of benzodioxinone indicate that, under certain conditions, each intermediate may undergo further reactions expedient for the formation of various polymeric structures. While ketenes are efficient contributors to step-growth polymerization when subjected to reaction with the compounds possessing hydroxyl or amine groups, the released benzophenone can be utilized as a photoinitiator in both the free radical and cationic polymerizations. It has been shown that the photolysis of heterobifunctional monomers equipped with benzodioxinone and aliphatic hydroxyl groups leads to the formation of oligoesters with a narrow molecular weight distribution. We also validated the photochemical ability of benzodioxinone to induce the synthesis of block and graft copolymers, hybrid and branched polymers, and cross-linked monofunctional vinyl monomers or hydroxyl group-containing linear polymers.

Abstract
The previously unexplored metal-catalyzed [5 + 2] cycloadditions of vinylcyclopropanes (VCPs) and electron-rich alkynes (ynol ethers) have been found to provide a highly efficient, direct route to dioxygenated seven-membered rings, a common feature of numerous natural and non-natural targets and building blocks for synthesis. The reactions proceed in high yield at room temperature and tolerate a broad range of functionalities. Substituted VCPs were found to react with high regioselectivity.

Abstract
The addition of TcO3L (L = Cl, O–, OCH3, CH3) to substituted ketenes along various addition pathways was studied with density functional theory calculations to explore the peri-, chemo-, and regioselectivity of the reactions. In the reactions of TcO3L with dimethyl ketene, the results show that for L = O– and CH3, [1 + 1] addition to form a triplet zwitterionic intermediate is the preferred first step; for L = Cl, the [3 + 2]C=C addition across the O–Tc–Cl bond is the preferred first step and for L = OCH3 the [3 + 2]C=C addition across the O–Tc–OCH3 bond is the preferred first step. In the reactions of TcO3Cl with substituted ketenes, [1 + 1] addition to form a triplet zwitterionic intermediate is the preferred first step for X = Ph, CN, and Cl; the [3 + 2]C=C addition across the O–Tc–O bond of the complex is the preferred first step for X = H, while the [3 + 2]C=C addition across the O–Tc–CH3 bond is the preferred first step. Reactions involving a change in the oxidation state of metal have high activation barriers, while reactions that do not involve a change in oxidation state have low activation barriers. Reactions of ketenes with TcO3L complexes have lower activation barriers for the preferred addition pathways than those of the ReO3L complexes reported in the literature. Thus, the TcO3L complexes may be better catalysts for the activation of the C=C bonds of substituted ketenes than the reported ReO3L complexes.
