Abstract
It is a celebratory moment for graphene! This year marks the 20th anniversary of the discovery of this amazing material by Geim and Novoselov. Curiously, it coincides with the century mark of graphite's layered structure discovery. Since the discovery of graphene with the promise that its outstanding properties would change the world, society often wonders where is graphene? In this context, their discoverers said in 2005, "despite the reigning optimism about graphene-based electronics, "graphenium" microprocessors are unlikely to appear for the next 20 years". Today, possibilities for graphene are endless! It can be used in electronics, photonics, fuel cells, energy storage, artificial intelligence, biomedicine, and even cultural heritage or sports. Additionally, the electronic properties of this material have been modified in fascinating ways. Bilayer graphene sheets have been found to be superconductive when twisted at a "magic angle", leading to a new and exciting field of research known as "moiré quantum materials" or "twistronics". Additionally, small graphene fragments with nanometer sizes undergo a quantum confinement effect of electrons, affording semiconductive materials with applications in optoelectronics. Organic synthesis allows the preparation of molecules with a graphene-like pattern with total control of the shape and size, exhibiting a big catalog of chiroptical and optoelectronic properties. This Perspective shows some of the fascinating milestones raised in the field of graphene-like materials from a chemical point of view, including functionalization strategies employed to chemically modify the topology and the properties of pristine graphene as well as the rising molecular graphenes.

Abstract
Understanding the exohedral reactivity of metallofullerenes is crucial for its application in various fields. By systematically controlling the trapped species inside the fullerene its reactivity can be tamed. In this work we report the preferential position of 3d metal atoms inside the C36 cage and their effect on exohedral reactivity in comparison with the neutral and the dianionic cage. The Diels-Alder (DA) reaction between butadiene and all non-equivalent [5-5], [6-5] and [6-6] C-C bonds on the fullerene cage was considered for the analysis, by using density functional theory at the S12g/TZ2P level including COSMO solvation model to elucidate the complete mechanistic pathways. Our results indicate that the preferential position of the metal ion is at the position close to the upper hexagon, and that the general trend in the reactivity of bonds follows the order [5-5]>[6-5]>[6-6]. Moreover, the encapsulation of metal atoms further enhances the reactivity of these bonds, by lowering the LUMOs of the cage, hence maximizing the orbital interactions.

Abstract
Understanding the geometrical preferences in chemical reactions is crucial for advancing the field of organic chemistry and improving synthetic strategies. One such preference, the Bürgi-Dunitz angle, is central to nucleophilic addition reactions involving carbonyl groups. This study successfully employs a novel two-dimensional Distortion-Interaction/Activation-Strain Model in combination with a two-dimensional Energy Decomposition Analysis to investigate the origins of the Bürgi-Dunitz angle in the addition reaction of CN- to (CH3)2C═O. We constructed a 2D potential energy surface defined by the distance between the nucleophile and carbonylic carbon atom and by the attack angle, followed by an in-depth exploration of energy components, including strain and interaction energy. Our analysis reveals that the Bürgi-Dunitz angle emerges from a delicate balance between two key factors: strain energy and interaction energy. High strain energy, as a result of the carbonyl compound distorting to avoid Pauli repulsion, is encountered at high angles, thus setting the upper bound. On the other hand, interaction energy is shaped by a dominant Pauli repulsion when the angles are lower. This work emphasizes the value of the 2D Energy Decomposition Analysis as a refined tool, offering both quantitative and qualitative insights into chemical reactivity and selectivity.

Abstract
The reactivity and endo/exo selectivity of the Diels-Alder cycloaddition reactions involving furan and substituted furans as dienes have been computationally explored. In comparison to cyclopentadiene, it is found that furan is comparatively less reactive and also less endo-selective in the reaction with maleic anhydride as the dienophile. Despite that, both the reactivity and the selectivity can be successfully modified by the presence of substituents at either 2- or 3-positions of the heterocycle. In this sense, it is found that the presence of strong electron-donor groups significantly increases the reactivity of the system while the opposite is found in the presence of electron-withdrawing groups. The observed trends in both the reactivity and selectivity are analyzed quantitatively in detail by means of the activation strain model of reactivity in combination with the energy decomposition analysis methods.

Abstract
The potential application of η6 -metalated aryl iodides as organocatalyst has been explored by means of computational methods. It is found that the enhanced halogen bonding donor ability of these species, in comparison with their demetalated counterparts, translates into a significant acceleration of the Diels-Alder cycloaddition reaction involving cyclohexadiene and methyl vinyl ketone. The factors behind this acceleration, the endo-exo selectivity of the process and the influence of the nature of the transition metal fragment in the activity of these species are quantitatively explored in detail by means of the combination of the Activation Strain Model of reaction and the Energy Decomposition Analysis methods.

Abstract
Here, we provide evidence of the path-dependency of the energy components of the energy decomposition analysis scheme, EDA, by studying a set of thirty-one closed-shell model systems with the D2h symmetry point group. For each system, we computed EDA components from nine different pathways and numerically showed that the relative magnitudes of the components differ substantially from one path to the other. Not surprisingly, yet unfortunately, the most significant variations in the relative magnitudes of the EDA components appear in the case of species with bonds within the grey zone of covalency and ionicity. We further discussed that the role of anions and their effect on arbitrary Pauli repulsion energy components affects the nature of bonding defined by EDA. The outcome variation by the selected partitioning scheme of EDA might bring arbitrariness when a careful comparison is overlooked. Here, we provide evidence of the path-dependency of the energy components of the energy decomposition analysis scheme, EDA, by studying a set of thirty-one closed-shell model systems with the D2h symmetry point group.![]()

Abstract
Shear thickening fluid (STF) is investigated to strength soft armor; however, its impact resistance still does not meet practical needs. In this work, a small amount of hydroxylated fullerene (C60) was mixed with STF to improve the thickening ratio. First, furfuryl alcohol (FA) was grafted onto C60 through a Diels–Alder (D–A) reaction to improve the dispersity of C60 in the STF. Sheath-core composite fibers (polyketone (PK) as the sheath and STF as the core) were then fabricated by coaxial electrospinning. Finally, composite fibers containing STF and C60 were wrapped on the surface of aramid yarns to fabricate a core-spun yarn. Under impact, these core-spun yarns manifested the characteristics of aramid fibers and the thickening advantages of the STF, solving problems of the hygroscopicity, migration, and leakage of STF. In addition, the content of STF was also greatly increased. The spike punching resistance of the core-spun yarn fabric is about 2.8 times that of the aramid fabric (AF) under the same area density. Impact-resistant core-spun yarn fabrics could provide a new direction for the development of soft armor. Shear thickening fluid (STF) is investigated to strength soft armor; however, its impact resistance still does not meet practical needs.![]()

Abstract
The Diels-Alder cycloaddition reaction between 1,3-cyclohexadiene and a series of C60 fullerenes with encapsulated (super)alkali/(super)halogen species (Li+@C60, Li2F+@C60, Cl-@C60, and LiF2-@C60) was explored by means of DFT calculations. The reactivity of the ion encapsulating systems was compared to that of the parent C60 fullerene. Significant enhancement in reactivity was found for cation-encapsulating Li+/Li2F+@C60 complexes. The cycloadduct formed by LiF2-@C60 was found to be the most thermodynamically favorable among the studied ones. In contrast, encapsulation of Cl- anions disfavors the cycloaddition reaction both kinetically and thermodynamically. Higher activation energy barrier and less stability of the reaction product in the case of Cl-@C60 were associated with the higher deformation energies of the fullerene cage and the lower interaction energy between the reactants in comparison with the other studied complexes.

Abstract
The synthesis and characterization of a family of indene-C60 adducts obtained via Diels-Alder cycloaddition [4 + 2] are reported. The new C60 derivatives include indenes with a variety of functional groups. These adducts show lowest unoccupied molecular orbital energy levels to be at the right position to consider these compounds as electron-transporting materials for planar heterojunction perovskite solar cells. Selected derivatives were applied into inverted (p-i-n configuration) perovskite device architectures, fabricated on flexible polymer substrates, with large active areas (1 cm2). The highest power conversion efficiency, reaching 13.61%, was obtained for the 6'-acetamido-1',4'-dihydro-naphtho[2',3':1,2][5,6]fullerene-C60 (NHAc-ICMA). Spectroscopic characterization was applied to visualize possible passivation effects of the perovskite's surface induced by these adducts.

Abstract
The physical factors behind the experimentally observed high activity of gold(I)-catalysts having an α-cationic phosphole as a ligand have been computationally explored. To this end, the gold(I)-catalysed hydroarylation reactions of phenylacetylene and mesitylene involving both neutral and cationic phosphole as well as phosphine ligands have been quantitatively analyzed in detail with the help of the activation strain model of reactivity in combination with the energy decomposition analysis method. It is found that the cationic phosphole ligands induce a dramatic change in both the geometry and the electronic structure of the initially formed π-complex which significantly enhances its electrophilicity. This results in an enhancement of the key π(mesitylene) → π*(LAu-acetylene complex) molecular orbital interaction which is the main factor responsible for the activating effect of these cationic ligands.

Abstract
The influence of the replacement of CH groups by boron atoms on the reactivity of planar polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons has been explored by means of computational tools. To this end, [4 + 2]-cycloaddition reactions involving anthracene and neutral boranthrene with different dienophiles such as ethylene, acetylene, and CO2 have been compared. In addition, the influence of additional fused aromatic rings (pentacene or borapentacene) on the reactivity of these species has been also explored. It was found that the B-doped systems are systematically much more reactive than their all-carbon counterparts from both kinetic and thermodynamic points of view. The observed trends in reactivity are quantitatively analyzed in detail using state-of-the-art methods, namely, the activation strain model of reactivity and the energy decomposition analysis method. Our calculations reveal the importance of molecular orbital interactions as the key factor responsible for the enhanced reactivity of the B-doped systems.

cyclohexadiene and methyl vinyl ketone is compared to the analogous
process mediated by a bidentate iodine(III)-organocatalyst and by
related, highly active iodine(I) species. It is found that the bidentate
iodine(III)-catalyst accelerates the cycloaddition by lowering the
reaction barrier up to 10 kcal mol–1 compared to
the parent uncatalyzed reaction. Our quantitative analyses reveal
that the origin of the catalysis is found in a significant reduction
of the steric (Pauli) repulsion between the diene and dienophile,
which originates from both a more asynchronous reaction mode and a
significant polarization of the π-system of the dienophile away
from the incoming diene. Notably, the activity of the iodine(III)-catalyst
can be further enhanced by increasing the electrophilic nature of
the system. Thus, novel systems are designed whose activity actually
surpasses that of strong Lewis acids such as BF3.

Abstract
This perspective article summarizes recent applications of the combination of the activation strain model of reactivity and the energy decomposition analysis methods to the study of the reactivity of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and related compounds such as cycloparaphenylenes, fullerenes and doped systems. To this end, we have selected representative examples to highlight the usefulness of this relatively novel computational approach to gain quantitative insight into the factors controlling the so far not fully understood reactivity of these species. Issues such as the influence of the size and curvature of the system on the reactivity are covered herein, which is crucial for the rational design of novel compounds with tuneable applications in different fields such as materials science or medicinal chemistry.

Abstract

Tetrafluoroethylene and butadiene
form the 2 + 2 cycloadduct under
kinetic control, but the Diels–Alder cycloadduct is formed
under thermodynamic control. Borden and Getty showed that the preference
for 2 + 2 cycloaddition is due to the necessity for syn-pyramidalization of the two CF2 groups in the 4 + 2 transition
state. We have explored the full potential energy surface for the
concerted and stepwise reactions of tetrafluoroethylene and butadiene
with density functional theory, DFT (B3LYP and M06-2X), DLPNO-UCCSD(T),
and CASSCF-NEVPT2 methods and with the distortion/interaction–activation
strain model to explain the energetics of different pathways. The
2 + 2 cycloadduct is formed by an anti-transition state followed by
two rotations and a final bond formation transition state. Energetics
are compared to the reaction of maleic anhydride and ethylene.

Abstract
The regioselectivity of the Diels-Alder reaction is predicted by the ortho-para rule which has been explained from FMO theory. Using DFT calculations, the activation-strain model and energy decomposition analysis we studied the reaction of methyl acrylate with four unsymmetrical dienes. We found that if the analysis is carried out considering the TS structures, the selectivity would not be explained by the interaction energy as expected considering the FMO arguments. However, a thorough analysis along the reaction path revealed that the interaction energy is responsible for the regioselectivity. A deeper analysis with the EDA model showed that the decisive term that accounts for the HOMO-LUMO interactions favors the ortho and para paths, as predicted by FMO arguments.

Abstract
The factors controlling the selectivity of the Diels-Alder cycloaddition reactions involving Fischer-type carbene complexes and cyclopentadiene have been explored computationally by means of density functional theory calculations. To this end, the influence of the substituents directly attached to the carbene ligand on the endo : exo ratio has been compared to the available experimental data and quantitatively analysed in detail by means of the combination of the activation strain model of reactivity and energy decomposition analysis methods. The insight gained in this computational study may be important for the rational design of exo-selective Diels-Alder reactions.

Abstract
The influence of the charge on the Diels-Alder reactivity of azafullerenes (C59N+ and C59N-) has been computationally explored by means of density functional theory calculations. In addition, the regioselectivity of the process has been investigated and compared to the analogous cycloaddition reaction involving the parent neutral azahydro[60]fullerene C59NH. It is found that the [4+2]-cycloaddition reaction between C59N+ and cyclopentadiene, which occurs concertedly through a synchronous transition state, proceeds with a lower activation barrier and is more exothermic than the analogous process involving C59NH. In contrast, the anionic C59N- counterpart is clearly less reactive. This reactivity trend is quantitatively analyzed in detail by means of the activation strain model of reactivity in combination with the energy decomposition analysis method. It is found that the frontier molecular orbital interactions are not responsible for the observed reactivity trend but the Pauli repulsion between closed-shells mainly governs the transformation.
