Abstract
How the particle size and concentration of microplastics impact their toxicity is largely unknown. Herein, the effects of polystyrene microplastics (1 μm, MPs) and nanoplastics (100 nm, NPs) exposed at 1 mg/L (L) and 10 mg/L (H), respectively, on the growth, histopathology, oxidative stress, gut microbiome, and metabolism of rare minnow (Gobiocypris rarus) were investigated by chemical analysis and multi-omics. MPs and NPs inhibited the growth, induced histopathological injury and aggravated oxidative stress markedly with contrasting significance of particle size and concentration. The composition of core gut microbiota changed dramatically especially for the MPs-H. Similarly, gut bacterial communities were reshaped by the MPs and NPs but only NPs-H decreased both richness and Shannon indexes significantly. Co-occurrence network analysis revealed that the potential keystone genera underwent great changes in exposed groups compared to the control. MPs-H increased the network complexity and the frequency of positive interactions which was opposite to other exposed groups. Moreover, the metabolomic profiles associated with amino acid, lipid, unsaturated fatty acid and hormone metabolism were disturbed significantly especially for MPs-H and NPs-H. In conclusion, the toxicity of MPs depends on both the particle size and concentration, and varies with the specific indicators as well.

Abstract
Background Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a prevalent endocrine disease in women, intricately linked to hormonal imbalances. The microbiota composition plays a pivotal role in influencing hormonal levels within the body. In this study, we utilized a murine model to investigate how intestinal and vaginal microbiota interact with hormones in the development of PCOS. Methods Twenty female mice were randomly assigned to the normal group (N) and the model group (P), where the latter received daily subcutaneous injections of 0.1 mL DHEA (6 mg/100 g). Throughout the experiment, we evaluated the PCOS mouse model by estrus cycle, serum total testosterone (T), prolactin (PRL) and luteinizing hormone (LH) levels, and ovarian pathological morphology. The microbial composition in both intestinal content and vaginal microbiota were studied by 16S rRNA gene high-throughput sequencing. Results Compared with the N group, the P group showed significant increases in body weight, T, and PRL, with significant decrease in LH. Ovaries exhibited polycystic changes, and the estrous cycle was disrupted. The intestinal microbiota result shows that Chao1, ACE, Shannon and Simpson indexes were decreased, Desulfobacterota and Acidobacteriota were increased, and Muribaculaceae, Limosilactobacillus and Lactobacillus were decreased in the P group. T was significantly positively correlated with Enterorhabdus, and LH was significantly positively correlated with Lactobacillus. The analysis of vaginal microbiota revealed no significant changes in Chao1, ACE, Shannon, and Simpson indices. However, there were increased in Firmicutes, Bacteroidota, Actinobacteriota, Streptococcus, and Muribaculaceae. Particularly, Rodentibacter displayed a robust negative correlation with other components of the vaginal microbiota. Conclusion Therefore, the response of the intestinal microbiota to PCOS is more significant than that of the vaginal microbiota. The intestinal microbiota is likely involved in the development of PCOS through its participation in hormonal regulation.

Abstract
Flaxseed oil (FO) has been demonstrated its multiple beneficial effects in vivo due to high concentration of α-linolenic acid. The deterioration of FO can be triggered by high temperature heating during the deep frying process resulting in alteration of healthy properties. In this study, the effect of FO before and after deep frying on lipid metabolism and gut homeostasis of rats was investigated compared to deep-fried palm oil (DPO) treated group. Deep-fried flaxseed oil (DFO) treatment significantly enhanced the triglyceride accumulation in serum and liver tissues of rats. A greater increase of peroxides and proinflammatory cytokine levels was found in the serum of DFO treated rats compared to other groups. The histopathologic data indicated that DFO and DPO reduced the villus height of intestinal and colonic tissues and increased the inflammatory cell infiltration. The inflammatory cytokines (TNFα and IL-6) were enhanced and the key markers of epithelia colonic tissues (occludin and MUC-2) were suppressed in rats with DFO interventions, which is in consistency with histopathologic results. In addition, FO could increase the number of beneficial bacteria while the relative abundance of obesity and inflammatory-related bacteria was promoted by DFO treatment, including Ruminococcaceae, Prevotellaceae, and Selenomonadales. In conclusion, DFO intake had a significant impact on the disruption of gut barrier homeostasis, potentially worsening the dysbiosis than DPO. The beneficial effects of FO in vivo could be significantly reduced by extreme deep frying, which suggests the need for moderate cooking edible oils such as FO.

Abstract
Bacteriocins are crucial metabolites of probiotics that display beneficial functions. The intestinal barrier is an important target on which probiotics exert their intestinal health activity. However, the impacts of bacteriocin-producing probiotics on the intestinal barrier are unclear. In this study, the effects of bacteriocin-producing Lactiplantibacillus plantarum Q7 and L. plantarum F3-2 on the intestinal barrier of mice were explored. It was shown that L. plantarum Q7 promoted the expression of mucin MUC2 to enhance the protection provided by the intestinal mucus layer. L. plantarum Q7 up-regulated the gene expression of intestinal tight junction proteins ZO-1 and JAM-1 significantly, and L. plantarum F3-2 up-regulated ZO-1 and Claudin-1 markedly, which exhibited tight junction intestinal barrier function. The two strains promoted the release of IgA and IgG at varying degrees. The antimicrobial peptide gene RegIIIγ was up-regulated markedly, and the gene expression of inflammatory cytokines appeared to exhibit an upward trend with L. plantarum Q7 treatment, so as to enhance intestinal immune regulation function. Furthermore, L. plantarum Q7 and L. plantarum F3-2 increased the abundance of the beneficial bacteria Muribaculaceae, inhibited the growth of the harmful bacteria Parabacteroides, and facilitated the synthesis of total short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), which seemed to favor the prevention of metabolic diseases. Our results suggested that L. plantarum Q7 and L. plantarum F3-2 showed strain specificity in their protective effects on the intestinal chemical, physical, immunological and biological barriers of mice, which provided theoretical support for the selective utilization of bacteriocin-producing strains to regulate host health.

Abstract
As one of the most consumed non-alcoholic beverages in the world, tea is acclaimed for its pleasant flavor and various health benefits. Different types of tea present a distinctive flavor and bioactivity due to the changes in the composition and proportion of respective compounds. This article aimed to provide a more comprehensive understanding of tea flavor (including aroma and taste) and the character of tea in preventing and alleviating diseases. The recent advanced modern analytical techniques for revealing flavor components in tea, including enrichment, identification, quantitation, statistics, and sensory evaluation methodologies, were summarized in the following content. Besides, the role of tea in anti-cancer, preventing cardiovascular disease and metabolic syndrome, anti-aging and neuroprotection, and regulating gut microbiota was also listed in this article. Moreover, questions and outlooks were mentioned to objectify tea products' flavor quality and health benefits on a molecular level and significantly promote our understanding of the comprehensive value of tea as a satisfactory health beverage in the future.

Abstract
Obesity caused by poor eating habits has become a great challenge faced by public health organizations worldwide. Optimizing dietary intake and ingesting special foods containing biologically active substances (such as polyphenols, alkaloids, and terpenes) is a safe and effective dietary intervention to prevent the occurrence and development of obesity. Tea contains several active dietary factors, and daily tea consumption has been shown to have various health benefits, especially in regulating human metabolic diseases. Here, we reviewed recent advances in research on tea and its functional components in improving obesity-related metabolic dysfunction, and gut microbiota homeostasis and related clinical research. Furthermore, the potential mechanisms by which the functional components of tea could promote lipid-lowering and weight-loss effects by regulating fat synthesis/metabolism, glucose metabolism, gut microbial homeostasis, and liver function were summarized. The research results showing a "positive effect" or "no effect" objectively evaluates the lipid-lowering and weight-loss effects of the functional components of tea. This review provides a new scientific basis for further research on the functional ingredients of tea for lipid lowering and weight loss and the development of lipid-lowering and weight-loss functional foods and beverages derived from tea.

Abstract
Duyun compound green tea (DCGT) is a healthy beverage with lipid-lowering effect commonly consumed by local people, but its mechanism is not very clear. We evaluated the effect of DCGT treatment on bile acids (BA) metabolism of mice with high-fat diet (HFD) – induced hyperlipidaemia by biochemical indexes and metabolomics and preliminarily determined the potential biomarkers and metabolic pathways of hyperlipidaemia mice treated with DCGT as well as investigated its lipid-lowering mechanism. The results showed that DCGT treatment could reduce HFD – induced gain in weight and improve dyslipidaemia. In addition, a total of ten types of BA were detected, of which seven changed BA metabolites were observed in HFD group mice. After DCGT treatment, glycocholic acid, tauroursodeoxycholic acid and taurochenodeoxycholic acid were significantly down-regulated, while hyodeoxycholic acid, deoxycholic acid and chenodeoxycholic acid were markedly up-regulated. These results demonstrated that DCGT treatment was able to make the BA metabolites in the liver of hyperlipidaemia mice normal and alleviate hyperlipidaemia by regulating the metabolites such as glycocholic acid, tauroursodeoxycholic acid and taurochenodeoxycholic, as well as the BA metabolic pathway and cholesterol metabolic pathway involved.

Abstract
Human exposure to microplastics (MPs) continues to occur due to ingestion of contaminated food, water and air. Intake of MPs can pose potential health risks by interfering with the production and circulation of nutrients, leading to physiological stress (such as immune responses and metabolic abnormalities). Toxicity data of MPs based on healthy individuals may not be applicable to large populations of patients with chronic diseases represented by diabetes. Therefore, in this study, the response of diabetic mice was compared with that of healthy mice after exposure to polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs), and interesting differences were observed. PS-MPs exposure significantly increased liver tissue damage, abnormal lipid metabolism, inflammatory effect, liver metabolic disorder and changes of intestinal microbial composition in diabetic mice. Moreover, PS-MPs overstated abnormal lipid metabolism in diabetic mice. The difference between the increased inflammation after exposure to PS-MPs in healthy and diabetic mice involves that the former is mainly modulated by gut microbes, while diabetic mice seem to be more susceptible to lipid metabolism disturbances. In addition, the size effect of MPs was also observed in diabetic mice. These results suggested that individuals with chronic diseases may be more sensitive to pollution due to altered homeostasis, and therefore disease status should be fully considered when assessing the health risk of pollutants.

Abstract
Tea powder has been reported to have some physiological functions. However, there is no report on whether there are differences in the active ingredients of tea powder with different qualities and whether there are different prebiotic mechanisms. This study was aimed to investigate the effects of different qualities of tea powder on preventing obesity from different aspects, namely antioxidation, inflammation, lipid-lowering, and intestinal flora, using an obesity mouse model. The results showed that all three types of tea powder with different qualities could reduce body weight and decrease serum TC, TG, and LDL-C. However, tea powder with different quality attributes exhibited diverse modulatory effects and mechanisms. Tender tea powder contained more tea polyphenols, and it had a better effect on improving oxidative stress. Tender tea powder significantly decreased the abundances of Blautia, Bilophila, and Oscillibacter, and increased the abundances of Alloprevotella, Lachnoclostridium, Romboutsia, and Ruminococcaceae_UCG-004. Coarse tea powder contained more dietary fiber, and had a better effect on reducing the food intake and improving lipid metabolism, which could reduce lipid synthesis and increase lipid β-oxidation. Coarse tea powder significantly decreased the abundance of Dubosiella and increased the abundances of the Lachnospiraceae_NK4A136 group and Coriobacteriaceae_UCG-002. Our findings provide a theoretical reference for the comprehensive utilization of tea powder.

Abstract
Evidence from observational studies for the effect of tea consumption on obesity is inconclusive. This study aimed to verify the causal association between tea consumption and obesity through a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis in general population-based datasets. The genetic instruments, single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with tea consumption habits, were obtained from genome-wide association studies (GWAS): UK Biobank, Nurses’ Health Study, Health Professionals Follow-up Study, and Women’s Genome Health Study. The effect of the genetic instruments on obesity was analyzed using the UK Biobank dataset (among ∼500,000 participants). The causal relationship between tea consumption and obesity was analyzed by five methods of MR analyses: inverse variance weighted (IVW) method, MR-Egger regression method, weighted median estimator (WME), weighted mode, and simple mode. Ninety-one SNPs were identified as genetic instruments in our study. A mild causation was found by IVW (odds ratio [OR] = 0.998, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.996 to 1.000, p = 0.049]), which is commonly used in two-sample MR analysis, indicating that tea consumption has a statistically significant but medically weak effect on obesity control. However, the other four approaches did not show significance. Since there was no heterogeneity and pleiotropy in this study, the IVW approach has the priority of recommendation. Further studies are needed to clarify the effects of tea consumption on obesity-related health problems in detail.

Abstract
Instant dark tea (IDT) is a new product gaining increasing attention because it is convenient and can endow significant health benefit to consumers, which is partially attributed to its high concentration of functional ingredients. However, the molecular mechanism underlying its regulatory effect on hyperlipidaemia is rarely studied. In this study, we performed omics and molecular verification in high-fat diet (HFD)-fed rat, aiming to reveal the mechanism and provide molecular evidence. The results showed that the major bioactive components in IDT were include 237.9 mg/g total polysaccharides, 336.6 mg/g total polyphenols, and 46.9 mg/g EGCG. Rats fed with IDT (0.27–0.54 g/kg for 12 weeks) significantly reduced the body weight and TC, TG, LDL-C, blood glucose, and MDA and induced the level of serum HDL-C and also the levels of liver SOD, CAT, GSH-Px, and Nrf2, compared to HFD group. For molecular mechanism study, HIDT feeding had significant impact on the gene expressions of biomarkers in lipogenesis (FABP, CD36, SCD1, Cyp4a1, and Kcnn2), lipid oxidation (PPARγ), and glucose glycolysis (Gck and ENO2) in liver tissue. Moreover, gut microbiome study found that rats fed with IDT dramatically modified the gut microbial species at the family level, such as suppressing the increase abundance of Proteobacteria and Firmicutes induced by HFD. HIDT significantly boosted the relative composition of beneficial bacterium Akkermansia and Rikenellaceae_RC9_gut_group and decreased the relative abundance of the harmful bacterium Ruminococcaceae_UCG-005 and Ruminiclostridium_9, compared to HFD (p < 0.01). Correlation analysis between microbiome and animal indicators found that seven genera including Akkermansia, Clostridiales, Lachnospiraceae, Lachnospiraceae_UCG-010, Ruminiclostridium_9, Ruminococaceae-UCG-005, and Ruminocuccus_1 were found as potential biomarkers that were strongly correlated with oxidative stress and metabolism genes. For instance, Ruminococcaceae_UCG-005 was significantly correlated with body weight, TG, HDL-C, Nfr2, FABP3, SCD1, Cyp4a1, and Kcnn2. Collectively, the above data obtained in this study had provided the primary molecular evidence for the molecular mechanism and brought in novel insights based on omics for the regulatory effect of IDT on hyperlipidaemia.

Abstract
Fuzhuan brick tea (FBT) is a traditional popular beverage in the border regions of China. Nowadays, FBT has been attracted great attention due to its uniquely flavor and various health-promoting functions. An increasing number of efforts have been devoted to the studies on health benefits and chemistry of FBT over the last decades. However, FBT was still received much less attention than green tea, oolong tea and black tea. Therefore, it is necessary to review the current encouraging findings about processing, microorganisms, chemical constituents, health benefits and potential risk of FBT. The fungus fermentation is the key stage for processing of FBT, which is involved in a complex and unique microbial fermentation process. The fungal community in FBT is mainly dominated by "golden flower" fungi, which is identified as Aspergillus cristatus. A great diversity of novel compounds is formed and identified after a series of biochemical reactions during the fermentation process of FBT. FBT shows various biological activities, such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-obesity, anti-bacterial, and anti-tumor activities. Furthermore, the potential risk of FBT was also discussed. It is expected that this review could be useful for stimulating further research of FBT.

Abstract
Glucolipid metabolism, nitrogen metabolism, and inflammation are closely related to circadian rhythm disorder (CRD). Ripened Pu-erh tea (RPT) shows significant antidyslipidemic, antihyperurecemic, and anti-inflammatory effects. However, it is unclear whether healthy population are affected by CRD and whether long-term consumption of RPT can alleviate it. To investigate this problem, healthy mice were pretreated with RPT (0.25%, w/v) for 60 days and then subjected to CRD for 40 days. Our results indicated that healthy mice showed obesity, and the intestinal and liver inflammation increased after CRD, which were associated with the development of a metabolic disorder syndrome. RPT effectively reversed this trend by increasing the production and excretion rates of bile acid. RPT reshaped the disorder of gut microbiota caused by CRD and promoted the change of archaeal intestinal types from Firmicutes-dominant type to Bacteroidota-dominant type. In addition, by repairing the intestinal barrier function, RPT inhibited the infiltration of harmful microorganisms or metabolites through enterohepatic circulation, thus reducing the risk of chronic liver inflammation. In conclusion, RPT may reduce the risk of CRD-induced obesity in mice by increasing bile acid metabolism. The change of bile acid pool contributes to the reshaping of gut microflora, thus reducing intestinal inflammation and oxidative stress induced by CRD. Therefore, we speculated that the weakening of CRD damage caused by RPT is due to the improvement of bile acid-mediated enterohepatic circulation. It was found that 0.25% RPT (a human equivalent dose of 7 g/60 kg/day) has potential for regulating CRD.

Abstract
Tea is one of the three most widely consumed beverages in the world, not only because of its unique flavor but also due to its various health benefits. The bioactive components in tea, such as polyphenols, polysaccharides, polypeptides, pigments, and alkaloids, are the main contributors to its health functions. Based on epidemiological surveys, the consumption of tea and its compounds in daily life has positive effects on cardiovascular diseases, cancers, hepatopathy, obesity, and diabetes mellitus. In experimental studies, the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, anti-obesity, cardiovascular protective, liver protective, and hypoglycemic activities of tea and the related mechanisms of action have been widely investigated. The regulation of several classical signaling pathways, such as nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB), AMP activated protein kinase (AMPK), and wingless/integrated (Wnt) signaling, is involved. Clinical trials have also demonstrated the potential of tea products to be applied as dietary supplements and natural medicines. In this paper, we reviewed and discussed the recent literature on the health benefits of tea and its compounds, and specifically explored the molecular mechanisms involved.
