Abstract
Background: Experiences of early life maltreatment (ELM) are alarmingly common and represent a risk factor for the development of psychopathology, particularly depression. Research has focused on alterations in autonomic nervous system (ANS) functioning as a mediator of negative mental health outcomes associated with ELM. Early alterations in autonomic vagal activity (vmHRV) may moderate the relationship between ELM and depression, particularly when considering forms of emotional maltreatment. Recent evidence suggests that the relationships of both ELM and vmHRV with depression may be non-linear, particularly considering females.Objective: Building on and extending theoretical considerations and previous work, the present work aims to further the current understanding of the complex relationships between ELM exposure, vmHRV, and depression.Methods: This study uses an adaptive modelling approach, combining exploratory network-based analyses with linear and quadratic moderation analyses, drawing on a large sample of males and females across adolescence (total N = 213; outpatient at-risk sample and healthy controls) and adulthood (total N = 85; community-based convenience sample).Results: Exploratory network-based analyses reveal that exposure to emotional abuse is particularly central within a network of ELM subtypes, depressive symptoms, and concurrent vmHRV in both adolescents and adults. In adults, emotional neglect shows strong associations with both emotional abuse and vmHRV and is highly central as a network node, which is not observed in adolescents. Moderator analyses reveal significant interactions between emotional maltreatment and vmHRV predicting depressive symptoms in adult females. Significant quadratic relationships of emotional maltreatment and vmHRV with depression are observed in both adolescent and adult females.Conclusions: The present findings contribute to the understanding of the psychological and physiological mechanisms by which ELM acts as a risk factor for the development of depression. Ultimately, this will contribute to the development of targeted and effective intervention strategies to mitigate the detrimental effects of early adversity.

Abstract
Impairments in cardiac vagal control (CVC) have been independently linked to smoking status and depression and are implicated in self-regulatory processes that may exacerbate depressive symptoms and maintain smoking behavior. Yet, few studies have examined how depressive symptoms, even at low levels, influence CVC reactivity among individuals who smoke. Investigating these relationships may provide novel insights into how depressive symptoms exacerbate existing regulatory vulnerabilities among smokers. This study investigated how depression symptoms affect CVC reactivity as a function of changing situational demands among a community sample of 60 daily adult cigarette smokers. Participants completed a mildly demanding cognitive task while physiological data was recorded. Growth curve modeling was used to examine the main and interactive effects of self-reported depressive symptoms on CVC reactivity over the course of the task. We hypothesized that greater depressive symptoms would be associated with less CVC reactivity, characterized by smaller initial reductions in CVC values and a flatter slope over time. Participants were daily smokers with mild to moderate levels of depression. Final model results, where time was specified as linear and the slope was fixed, showed no significant main or interactive effects of time and depression symptoms on CVC reactivity. Findings suggest that at low to moderate levels, depressive symptom severity is not related to patterns of CVC reactivity among adults who smoke. This is the first study to examine this relationship in this population. Future investigations that examine patterns of CVC reactivity among smokers and non-smokers with more severe depression are needed.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Cross-sectional studies highlighted changes in autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity in geriatric depression. However, few longitudinal studies assessed this link which remains still debated. We examined the longitudinal association between lifetime depression history, current depressive disorders, and the evolution of ANS activity in older community women. METHODS The present data stemmed from the PROOF study, a population-based cohort of 1011 community-dwellers followed-up at 2-year intervals for 10 years. Only data from female participants was analyzed (n = 508, mean age 68.5 ± 0.88 years), as very few men had depression in our population. Depressive symptoms and depression history were collected at baseline. Participants were classified in four groups according to presence or absence of history of depression (HD) or current depressive symptomatology (CD): HD+/CD+, HD-/CD+, HD+/CD- and HD-/CD-. ANS activity was assessed during the follow-up through 24-h heart rate variability (HRV). Longitudinal associations between depressive status and HRV indices during the follow-up were investigated using multivariate linear mixed models. RESULTS Compared to HD-/CD- group, women belonging to HD-/CD+ group had greater baseline parasympathetic tone, as measured by lower LF index and LF/HF balance. The longitudinal analysis exhibited a significant enhancement of LF/HF balance with time, measuring an increase of sympathetic tone in HD-/CD+ group. CONCLUSION Our findings suggest that late-onset depressive symptoms may be associated with subsequent autonomic dysregulation in older women. These results highlight the importance of detecting and managing depressive symptoms to limit their consequences on ANS functioning, and the risk of cardiovascular events.

Abstract
Objectives Changes in the autonomic nervous system have been observed in patients with depressive disorders by measuring their heart rate variability (HRV). However, whether HRV associates with depressive events in healthy people remains unknown. Methods Four healthy people participated in the present study. Their HRVs were measured routinely for 6 to 13 months. During this time, two participants reported experiencing two and three bouts of depression, respectively. This approach allowed us to examine changes in the participants’ HRVs by comparing their HRVs from before and after the unexpected depressive events. Changes in HRV were compared against those of two participants who did not report any depressive event. Results Participants’ low frequency/high frequency (LF/HF) ratios of HRV were lower after the event of depression than before. Their LF/HF ratios increased after recovery from the depressive events. In contrast, two participants who did not report any depressive event showed relatively smaller changes in their LF/HF ratios across measurements. Conclusions These results suggest that the LF/HF ratio may provide an objective measure of subjective experiences of depression and help identify potential cases of clinical depression.

Abstract
The autonomic nervous system (ANS) has received much attention as a potential low-cost, peripheral indicator of depression. Despite theoretical support, however, results have been mixed as to whether indices of the ANS reliably index depression. In response, the present study sought to clarify the relation between ANS activity and depression by examining cardiac autonomic balance (CAB) and cardiac autonomic regulation (CAR), two composite indices of the parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous system, within both a stressful and rewarding context. We hypothesized that CABStress, representing the difference between the parasympathetic and sympathetic branches in response to stress, and CARReward, representing the summation of the two branches in response to reward, will be most indicative of depressogenic risk. We examined the parasympathetic (i.e., respiratory sinus arrhythmia) and sympathetic (i.e., pre-ejection period) responses of 97 emerging adults (Mage = 18.93) for a stress (i.e., negative mood induction) and reward (i.e., probabilistic learning) task, as well as their depressive symptoms at baseline, 3-week, and 6-week follow-up. Analyses found partial support for our hypotheses, revealing greater CARReward (i.e., coactivation of both branches) was related to lower depressive symptoms. Further, exploratory analyses examining gender differences found lower CABStress (i.e., sympathetically-oriented response) was predictive of an increasing trajectory of depression, but only among males. Overall, the current study highlights the importance of simultaneously examining both branches of the ANS across various environmental contexts. Research and clinical implications of the current findings are discussed.

Autonomic Modulation of Cardiac Activity Across Levels of Sleep Depth in Individuals With Depression and Sleep Complaints. Psychosom Med 2021; 82:172-180. Abstract
OBJECTIVE We assessed mean heart rate (HR) and HR variability (HRV) across wake, rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, and non-REM (NREM) sleep, and across varying levels of NREM sleep depth in individuals with depression and sleep complaints. METHODS Retrospective polysomnographic data were obtained for 25 individuals diagnosed as having depression (84% female; mean age = 33.8 ± 12.2 years) and 31 mentally healthy controls (58.1% female; mean age = 37.2 ± 12.4 years). All were free of psychotropic and cardiovascular medication, cardiovascular disease, and sleep-related breathing disorders. HR and time-domain HRV parameters were computed on 30-second electrocardiography segments and averaged across the night for each stage of sleep and wake. RESULTS Compared with the control group, the depression group had higher HR across wake, REM, and all levels of NREM depth (F(1,51) = 6.3, p = .015). Significant group by sleep stage interactions were found for HRV parameters: SD of normal-to-normal intervals (SDNN; F(2.1,107.7) = 4.4, p = .014) and root mean square differences of successive R-R intervals (RMSSD; F(2.2,113.5) = 3.2, p = .041). No significant group difference was found for SDNN or RMSSD during wake (all, p ≥ .32). However, compared with the control group, the depression group had significantly lower SDNN in REM (p = .040) and all NREM stages (all p ≤ .045), and lower RMSSD during NREM 2 (p = .033) and NREM 3 (p = .034). CONCLUSIONS This study suggests that the abnormalities in autonomic cardiac regulation associated with depression and sleep problems are more prominent during sleep, especially NREM sleep, than during wake. This may be due to abnormalities in parasympathetic modulation of cardiac activity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Alteration of cardiac autonomic function may underlie the link between hypnotics use and the risk for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. This study aimed to examine the relationship between the various characteristics of benzodiazepine receptor agonists (BzRAs) and heart rate variability (HRV). METHODS A community-based survey using the cohort from the Yilan Study, Taiwan was conducted. Older adults aged 65 and older were randomly selected to participate from August 2013 to November 2016. Cardiac autonomic function was evaluated using HRV, and the lowest quartiles of HRV parameters were defined as unhealthy. Those who used BzRAs as a sleep aid were defined as BzRA hypnotic users. The characteristics of BzRA use were further detailed and included the half-life, drug compound, frequency of use, and cumulative daily equivalent dosage. RESULTS Of all participants, 379 (14.5%) were BzRA hypnotic users. After controlling for covariates, BzRA hypnotic users had a higher risk for unhealthier HRV than non-users. Among all BzRA hypnotic users, those who only used benzodiazepines (BZDs), used short half-life BzRAs, and used the middle tertile of daily cumulative BZD equivalent had a higher risk for poor total power (odds ratio [OR]: 2.11, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.07-4.16), high frequency (OR: 3.43, 95% CI: 1.07-10.97), and high frequency (OR: 2.94, 95% CI: 1.35-6.42), respectively, than their counterparts. CONCLUSIONS BzRA hypnotics are linked with poor cardiac autonomic function. Various characteristics of BzRA hypnotics showed an independent pattern of association with cardiac autonomic function.

Abstract
Objectives: Given the close relationship between sleep-wake disturbances and depression, an in-depth investigation of such a relationship is imperative. The present study aims at elucidating the relationship between various sleep-wake disturbances and depression in older adults and at examining the influence of co-occurring anxiety on such associations.Method: A community-based survey using the cohort from the Yilan Study in Taiwan was conducted from August 2013 to November 2016. Adults aged 65 and older were randomly selected to participate in the study. The Hospital Depression and Anxiety Scale was used to measure clinical depressive and anxiety symptoms. Insomnia and daytime sleepiness were defined through the Athens Insomnia Scale and the Epworth Sleepiness Scale, respectively. Furthermore, the use of hypnotics, subjective sleep duration and sleep-wake scheduling were evaluated. Their relationship with depression was examined through logistic regression analyses.Results: There were 2620 participants surveyed and 247 (9.4%) had depression. Before controlling for anxiety, insomnia (OR: 1.78, 95% CI: 1.23-2.55), daytime sleepiness (OR: 1.79, 95% CI: 1.27-2.53), and long sleepers (OR: 1.77, 95% CI: 1.24-2.53) have a higher likelihood for depression in the multivariable regression analysis. However, when including anxiety into the multivariable regression model, only those with daytime sleepiness and long sleepers had an elevated risk for depression. Therefore, the association between insomnia and depression turned to be statistically non-significant.Conclusion: In older adults, various sleep-wake disturbances differ in their relationship with depression. In addition, daytime sleepiness and long sleep duration were mostly characteristic of depression when co-occurring anxiety was considered.

Mild depressive symptoms (MDS) reflect vulnerability to major depression that does not meet the criteria for a major depressive disorder (MDD). Previous research indicates that it is difficult to identify MDS in young adults, and they exhibit diverse aspects of depressive symptoms caused by clinical depression, which can lead to poor academic performance, relationship difficulties, and even suicide. Additionally, many young adults remain unaware of their depressive symptoms during the early stages of MDD. Thus, the present study investigated clinical, neurocognitive, and physiological characteristics of young adults with various symptoms of depression and explored sex-specific differences. A total of 113 students aged 18-35 (MDD: n = 32; MDS: n =37; control [CON]: n = 44) participated in the study. Self-report clinical measures, short-term cardiac activity measured by finger sensors, and neurocognitive data were collected. Pearson's correlations, two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), principal component analysis, and exploratory structural equation modeling were conducted for the statistical analyses. Furthermore, the measurement invariance of the latent factor model was tested, and fit indices were compared according to sex. The results revealed that male students showed greater sympatho-vagal activity than female students. Additionally, male MDS students tended to exhibit decreased performance levels in neurocognitive function tasks compared with MDD and CON males, whereas female MDS students showed distinct characteristics compared to MDD and CON females on self-report measures of anxiety. Correlation analyses identified a positive association between the level of anger perception and latency in the executive function test among both males and females. Additionally, the use of a structured model revealed significant sex-specific differences in factor estimates. The present results suggest that recognizing the early signs of MDS that account for sex-specific differences in both subjective and objective measures may improve the diagnosis and monitoring of young adults with MDS.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Changes in parasympathetic activity have been associated with depression; however, it is not well understood whether these changes are a result of depression, or represent a compensatory mechanism protecting against it. We examined the association of autonomic nervous system activity with the risk of depression in euthymic individuals and those with subsyndromal depression using heart rate variability (HRV) analysis. METHODS From a community-based longitudinal cohort, 464 subjects from the baseline assessment and 253 who completed the 5-year follow-up visit were included in the cross-sectional and prospective analyses, respectively. Linear regression analysis was used to investigate the association of HRV measures with the current and future GDS scores. Logistic regression analysis examined the effect of HRV on future risk of SSD. RESULTS Low-frequency power (LFN), high-frequency power (HFN), and the LFN/HFN ratio at the baseline assessment were associated with the GDS score at the 5-year follow-up assessment; however, they were not associated with the GDS score at the baseline assessment. High HFN indicated an increased risk of depression at the 5-year follow-up assessment in euthymic subjects (OR = 3.025, 95% CI = 1.184 - 7.726, p = 0.021). LIMITATIONS HRV was not measured at the follow-up assessment and the interval between the assessments was comparatively long. Five-minute ECG recordings were used, and all participants were 65 years old or older. CONCLUSIONS Parasympathetic predominance may precede the onset of depression in older adults.

Abstract
Limitations of current depression treatments may arise from a lack of knowledge about unique psychophysiological processes that contribute to depression across the full range of presentations. This study examined how individual variations in heart rate (HR) and heart rate variability (HRV) are related to depressive symptoms across normative and clinical populations in 152 young adults (aged 18-35 years). Moderating effects of sex and antidepressant medication status were considered. Electrocardiogram data were collected during "vanilla" baseline and in response to positive and negative emotional cues. Linear regressions and repeated-measures mixed models were used to assess the relationships between Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II) scores, sex, antidepressant use, and cardiovascular outcomes. Baseline models yielded significant main effects of BDI-II and sex on HR and significant interactions between antidepressant medication status and BDI-II on HRV outcomes. The main effects of BDI-II and sex on HR were no longer significant after controlling for cardiorespiratory fitness. Participants who denied current antidepressant use (n = 137) exhibited a negative association and participants who endorsed current antidepressant (n = 15) use exhibited a positive association between BDI-II scores and HRV. Emotional reactivity models were largely non-significant with the exception of a significant main effect of antidepressant medication status on high-frequency HRV reactivity. Results indicated antidepressant medication use may moderate the relationship between depression severity and cardiovascular functioning, but this requires replication given the modest proportion of medicated individuals in this study. Overall, findings suggest cardiovascular processes and cardiorespiratory fitness are linked to depression symptomatology and may be important to consider in depression treatment.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE There is strong evidence for a bi-directional relationship between heart-health and depression in later life, but the physiological mechanisms underlying this relationship remain unclear. Heart rate variability is one promising factor that might help explain this relationship. We present results of a meta-analysis that considers heart rate variability alterations in older adults with depression. METHODS Literature search of Embase, PsychInfo and Medline revealed five clinical studies and six observational studies that examined the relationship between heart rate variability and depression in adults with a mean age over 60. These studies were included in this meta-analysis. RESULTS Heart rate variability was reduced among older adults with clinical depression (N = 550), relative to healthy controls (Hedges' g = -0.334, 95%CI [-0.579, -0.090], p = .007). When high-frequency and low-frequency heart rate variability were investigated separately, only low-frequency heart rate variability was significantly reduced in depressed patients (Hedges' g = -0.626, 95%CI [-1.083, -0.169], p = .007). A similar but weaker pattern of results was found in the observational studies. Most findings remained significant among unmedicated depressed older adults. LIMITATIONS Evidence of effect-size heterogeneity was found in the clinical studies, indicating the need for more well-designed research in the area. CONCLUSION Heart rate variability is reduced among older adults with depression, and this effect is not fully attributable to antidepressant medication use. Specifically, low-frequency heart rate variability may be reduced in depressed older adults. Heart rate variability warrants further attention, as it could help inform research into the prevention and treatment of depression in later life.

Abstract
Numerous epidemiological reports have found that adolescent, young adult, and middle-aged adult girls and women are more likely to be diagnosed with unipolar depression and report greater symptoms of depression when compared to boys and men of similar ages. What is less well-known is whether this gender difference persists into late life. This literature review examines whether the well-known gender difference in unipolar depression continues into old age, and, if it does, whether the variables that are known to contribute to the gender difference in unipolar depression from adolescence through adulthood continue to contribute to the gender difference in the elderly, and/or whether there are new variables that arise in old age and contribute to the gender difference in the elderly. In this review of 85 empirical studies from every continent except for Antarctica, we find substantial support for the gender difference in depression in individuals who are 60 and older. More research is necessary to determine which factors are the strongest predictors of the gender difference in depression in late life, and particularly whether the factors that seem to be responsible for the gender difference in depression in earlier life stages continue to predict the gender difference in the elderly, and/or whether new factors come into play in late life. Longitudinal research, meta-analyses, and model-based investigations of predictors of the gender difference in depression are needed to provide insights into how and why the gender difference in depression persists in older age.

Abstract
The study of vulnerabilities to depression typically identifies factors that are thought to be universally maladaptive or adaptive. In contrast, researchers recently have theorized that the ability to flexibly engage in different thoughts and behaviors that fit situational demands may be most indicative of psychological health. We review empirical evidence from 147 studies reporting associations between five components of flexibility (set-shifting, affective set-shifting, cardiac vagal control, explanatory flexibility, and coping flexibility) and depression and classify studies according to strength of study design. Evidence from correlational and case-controlled studies suggests cross-sectional relationships, but few prospective studies have been conducted. We discuss limitations of existing studies, identify new directions for programmatic research, and discuss implications that flexibility has for the prevention and treatment of depression.

Abstract
Backgrounds The aims of the present study were to determine the associations and sex-specific relationships between extreme sleep duration and cardiac autonomic control in a cohort of older individuals. Methods A community-based survey was conducted in Yilan City, Taiwan. Community-dwelling older adults aged ≥65 were randomly selected to participate. Extreme sleep durations were defined as either short sleep (≤5 hours) or long sleep (≥8 hours). Cardiac autonomic control was evaluated using the parameters of frequency-domain analysis of heart rate variability. Results Of 1,721 participants, 58.7% were female. In multiple logistic regression analyses, short sleep duration did not correlate with any of the unhealthier parameters of heart rate variability. In contrast, long sleep duration was associated with elevated risk for poor high-frequency values (odds ratio [OR]: 1.83, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.34-2.50) and the unfavorable low-frequency values (OR: 1.44, 95% CI: 1.05-1.97). When stratified by sex, the associations between extreme sleep duration and poor heart rate variability were more robust in males. Conclusions Poor cardiac autonomic control may underlie the link between extreme sleep duration and adverse health outcomes in older adults. A sex-specific relationship between poor cardiac autonomic function and extreme sleep duration also was found.

Abstract
Atrial fibrillation (AF) is currently recognized as one of the most common cardiac arrhythmias worldwide, with the increasing prevalence that has been estimated to be as high as 9% among the elderly. Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) has become an important patient-centered health outcome measurement, but the impacts created by AF and other arrhythmias with similar symptoms, such as frequent atrial and ventricular premature contractions (APCs and VPCs, defined as ≥ 3 beats/5 minutes), have not been extensively evaluated. The Yilan Study is a population-based community health survey, which in part aims to evaluate the prevalence and impacts of these arrhythmias on the HRQoL in a community dwelling elderly population. A total of 1,732 citizens from the Yilan, Taiwan, aged 65 years or older (45.8% male) were enrolled and visited at their homes, where HRQoL was measured utilizing the Short Form-12 Health Survey. Each participant's heart rhythm was recorded with an electrocardiographic monitor for 5 minutes. The results disclosed that the prevalence of AF of this aged population was 5.8%, similar to the mean global prevalence. Besides, the prevalence of frequent APCs and frequent VPCs in these elderly people were 7.1% and 5.5%, respectively. After multiple regression analysis, elderly people with AF had lower scores in the physical component of HRQoL, while those elderly people with frequent VPCs had lower scores in the mental component. Ultimately, these findings can provide additional useful and population-specific information about AF, and assist medical professionals in designing more effective strategies for cardiac arrhythmia treatments.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Our aims were (1) to measure respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA), a high-frequency spectrum component of heart rate variability (HRV) in mood-disordered suicide attempters and (2) to investigate the relationship of RSA to symptoms and length of hospitalization. METHODS Forty-nine female repetitive-suicide attempters with depressive disorder or bipolar disorder were recruited in a general hospital setting. Manic or psychotic patients were excluded. Resting RSA values were calculated from electrocardiogram data, and severity of clinical presentation shortly after admission and length of hospital stay were assessed. RESULTS RSA was positively associated with a higher Beck Scale for Suicidal Ideation score (r = 0.33 P = 0.019). Stepwise multiple regression analysis showed a significant correlation between RSA and hospitalization length after adjusting other variables (beta coefficient = 3.00; P = 0.030). Patients with a higher resting RSA had more prolonged hospitalizations (hospitalization beyond 30 days) after controlling for other variables (odds ratio = 5.08, P = 0.017). CONCLUSIONS Interaction between the environment and the autonomic nervous system is complex. Further and more comprehensive research is needed.

Abstract
The present meta-analysis aimed to quantify current evidence on sex differences in the autonomic control of the heart, indexed by measures of heart rate variability (HRV) in healthy human subjects. An extensive search of the literature yielded 2020 titles and abstracts, of which 172 provided sufficient reporting of sex difference in HRV. Data from 63,612 participants (31,970 females) were available for analysis. Meta-analysis yielded a total of 1154 effect size estimates (k) across 50 different measures of HRV in a cumulated total of 296,247 participants. Females showed a significantly lower mean RR interval and standard deviation of RR intervals (SDNN). The power spectral density of HRV in females is characterized by significantly less total power that contains significantly greater high- (HF) and less low-frequency (LF) power. This is further reflected by a lower LF/HF ratio. Meta-regression revealed significant effects of age, respiration control and the length of recording available for analysis. Although women showed greater mean heart rate, they showed greater vagal activity indexed by HF power of HRV. Underlying mechanisms of these findings are discussed.

Abstract
Reduced heart rate variability (HRV) is proposed to mediate the relation between depressive symptoms and cardiovascular health problems. Yet, several studies have found that in women depression is associated with higher HRV levels, whereas in men depression is associated with lower HRV levels. So far, these studies have only examined gender differences in HRV levels using a single assessment. This study aimed to test the interactive effects of gender and sadness on ambulatory-assessed HRV levels. A sample of 60 (41 women) employees participated in an ambulatory study. HRV levels (mean of successive differences; MSD) were continuously measured for 24 h. During the daytime, hourly assessments of sadness and other mood states were taken, while depressive symptoms were assessed with the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression scale (CES-D). Gender differences were observed when examining the impact of average daily sadness on MSD. In women, but not in men, the total amount of sadness experienced during the day was associated with higher circadian MSD levels. These findings suggest that researchers need to take gender differences into account when examining the relation between sadness, HRV, and cardiovascular problems.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) and cardiovascular disease (CVD) represent leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. We tested the hypothesis that growth restriction and preeclampsia (referred to as fetal risk) are significant predictors of these conditions, with women at higher risk in adulthood. Adult offspring exposed to fetal risk factors and their discordant siblings were from two prenatal cohorts, whose mothers were followed through pregnancy and whom we recruited as adults 40 years later (n = 538; 250 males and 288 females). Subjects were psychiatrically diagnosed and underwent a stress challenge during which parasympathetic regulation was assessed by electrocardiogram, operationalized as high-frequency R-R interval variability (HF-RRV). Linear mixed models and generalized estimating equations were used to examine the relationship of fetal risk on HF-RRV, MDD and comorbidity of low HF-RRV (lowest 25th percentile) and MDD, including interactions with sex and socioeconomic status (SES). Fetal risk was significantly associated with low HF-RRV response (F = 3.64, P = 0.05), particularly among low SES (interaction: F = 4.31, P < 0.04). When stratified by MDD, the fetal risk impact was three times greater among MDD compared with non-MDD subjects (effect size: 0.21 v. 0.06). Females had a significantly higher risk for the comorbidity of MDD and low HF-RRV than males (relative risk (RR) = 1.36, 95% CI: 1.07-1.73), an association only seen among those exposed to fetal risk (RR = 1.38, 95% CI: 1.04-1.83). Findings suggest that these are shared fetal antecedents to the comorbidity of MDD and CVD risk 40 years later, an association stronger in females than in males.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In order to elucidate the complex relationship between co-occurring depression and anxiety with cardiac autonomic function in the elderly, this study examined the correlation between cardiac vagal control (CVC) and pre-defined, theoretical factors from the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). METHODS Three hundred fifty-four randomly selected Chinese male subjects aged ≥ 65 years and living in the community were enrolled. CVC was measured using a frequency-domain index of heart rate variability. RESULTS Confirmatory factor analysis showed that the flat tripartite model of HADS provided a modest advantage in model fit when compared with other theoretical factor solutions. In the flat tripartite model, there was a significant negative association between anhedonic depression and CVC. In contrast, autonomic anxiety showed a significant positive correlation with CVC. In the hierarchical tripartite model, negative affectivity was not directly associated with CVC; instead, it had positive and negative indirect effects on CVC via autonomic anxiety and anhedonic depression, respectively. As scores for negative affectivity increased, these specific indirect effects diminished. CONCLUSIONS Among competing models of co-occurring depression and anxiety, constructs from tripartite models demonstrate fair conformity with the data but unique and distinct correlations with CVC. Negative affectivity may determine the relationship of anhedonic depression and autonomic anxiety with CVC. Separating affective symptoms under the constructs of the tripartite models helps disentangle complex associations between co-occurring depression and anxiety with CVC.

Abstract
A review of the literature indicates a higher prevalence of depression and anxiety in patients with pancreatic carcinoma compared with nonclinical populations. The aims of this study were to evaluate the tripartite model for assessing symptoms of depression and anxiety and develop a Chinese version of the Mood and Anxiety Symptoms Questionnaire-Short Form (MASQ-SF) in patients with pancreatic cancer. The final sample consisted of 1,029 patients with pancreatic cancer. In line with our hypothesis, results of confirmatory factor analysis suggest that the three factors identified fit the hypothesized tripartite model well. The Chinese version of the MASQ-SF also exhibited high internal consistency. Reliability of the three scales was excellent with all scores greater than .79. Cronbach's alpha for the total MASQ-SF was .88. The 1-month test-retest reliability was .80. Correlation coefficients among the three subscales ranged from .36 to .75. Thus, the Chinese version of the MASQ-SF exhibited high levels of reliability and validity, indicating that the Chinese version of the MASQ-SF is appropriate for assessing symptoms of depression and anxiety in patients with pancreatic cancer. The use of this instrument may help researchers to better measure depression and anxiety in patients with pancreatic cancer and consequently develop appropriate prevention and treatment interventions.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The present paper aims at offering a synthesis of possible reasons of the higher comorbidity of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and depression in women from a biopsychosocial perspective. METHOD The available literature is reviewed under sex/gender aspects related to the link between depression and CVD and common pathways to depression and CVD associated with chronic stress experiences including pathophysiological mechanisms and behavioural, cognitive, psychosocial and sociological risk factors/predictors. RESULTS There is considerable evidence that greater exposure to chronic stressors in women, interpersonal stress responsiveness, and internalizing coping styles are associated with an elevated risk of CVD and/or depression through behavioural and pathophysiological mechanisms including alterations in HPA axis functioning and autonomic nervous system which appear to be specific for women. CONCLUSION Women seem to be more strongly affected by psychosocial stressors related to CVD and depression as well as by direct and indirect effects of chronic stress compared to men. More evidence in understanding these differences within the biological, psychosocial and sociostructural determinants and pathways is essential for promoting women's health.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To describe the pathophysiological basis linking cardiovascular disease (CVD) and depression; to discuss the causal relationship between them, and to review the effects of antidepressant treatment on cardiovascular disease. METHOD A review of the literature based on the PubMed database. DISCUSSION Depression and cardiovascular disease are both highly prevalent. Several studies have shown that the two are closely related. They share common pathophysiological etiologies or co-morbidities, such as alterations in the hypothalamic-pituitary axis, cardiac rhythm disturbances, and hemorheologic, inflammatory and serotoninergic changes. Furthermore, antidepressant treatment is associated with worse cardiac outcomes (in case of tricyclics), which are not observed with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. CONCLUSION Although there is a strong association between depression and cardiovascular disease, it is still unclear whether depression is actually a causal factor for CVD, or is a mere consequence, or whether both conditions share a common pathophysiological etiology. Nevertheless, both conditions must be treated concomitantly. Drugs other than tricyclics must be used, when needed, to treat the underlying depression and not as mere prophylactic of cardiac outcomes.
