Exploring nanobioceramics in wound healing as effective and economical alternatives

Wound healing is a sophisticated process for which various treatment methods have been developed. Bioceramics with the ability to release inorganic ions in biological environments play a crucial role in cellular metabolism and exhibit bactericidal activity, contributing to numerous physiological processes. Their multifaceted roles in biological systems highlight their significance. The release of different metallic ions from bioceramics enables the repair of both hard and soft tissues. These ions may be effective in cell motility, proliferation, differentiation, adhesion, angiogenesis, and antibiosis. Unlike conventional medications, the bioactivity and antibacterial properties of bioceramics are typically not associated with side effects or bacterial resistance. Bioceramics are commonly recognized for their capcity to facilitate the healing of hard tissues due to their exceptional mechanical properties. In this review, we first explore wound treatment and its prevalent methods, and subsequently, we discuss the application of three primary categories of bioceramics-oxide ceramics, silicate-based ceramics, and calcium-phosphate ceramics-in the context of wound treatment. This review introduces bioceramics as a cost-effective and efficient alternative for wound repair. Our aim is to inspire researchers to incorporate bioceramics with other biomaterials to achieve enhanced, economical, expedited, and safer wound healing.

3D printed polylactic acid/polyethylene glycol/bredigite nanocomposite scaffold enhances bone tissue regeneration via promoting osteogenesis and angiogenesis

Recently, the fabrication of personalized scaffolds with high accuracy has been developed through 3D printing technology. In the current study, polylactic acid/polyethylene glycol (PLA/PEG) composite scaffolds with varied weight percentages (0, 5, 10, 20 and 30 %) of bredigite nanoparticles (B) were fabricated using the 3D printing and then characterized through scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infra-red spectroscopy. The addition of B nanoparticles up to 20 wt% to PLA/PEG scaffold increased the compressive strength (from 7.59 to 13.84 MPa) and elastic modulus (from 142.42 to 268.33 MPa). The apatite formation ability as well as inorganic ion release in simulated body fluid were investigated for 28 days. The MG-63 cells viability and adhesion were enhanced by increasing the amount of B in the PLA/PEG scaffold and the osteogenic differentiation of the rat bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells was confirmed by alkaline phosphatase activity test and alizarin red staining. According to chorioallantoic membrane assay, the highest angiogenesis occurred around the PLA/PEG/B30 scaffold. In vivo experiments on a rat calvarial defect model demonstrated an almost complete recovery in the PLA/PEG/B30 group within 8 weeks. Based on the results, the PLA/PEG/B30 composite scaffold is proposed as an optimal scaffold to repair bone defects.

Recent advances in additive manufacturing of patient-specific devices for dental and maxillofacial rehabilitation

OBJECTIVES

Customization and the production of patient-specific devices, tailoring the unique anatomy of each patient's jaw and facial structures, are the new frontiers in dentistry and maxillofacial surgery. As a technological advancement, additive manufacturing has been applied to produce customized objects based on 3D computerized models. Therefore, this paper presents advances in additive manufacturing strategies for patient-specific devices in diverse dental specialties.

METHODS

This paper overviews current 3D printing techniques to fabricate dental and maxillofacial devices. Then, the most recent literature (2018-2023) available in scientific databases reporting advances in 3D-printed patient-specific devices for dental and maxillofacial applications is critically discussed, focusing on the major outcomes, material-related details, and potential clinical advantages.

RESULTS

The recent application of 3D-printed customized devices in oral prosthodontics, implantology and maxillofacial surgery, periodontics, orthodontics, and endodontics are presented. Moreover, the potential application of 4D printing as an advanced manufacturing technology and the challenges and future perspectives for additive manufacturing in the dental and maxillofacial area are reported.

SIGNIFICANCE

Additive manufacturing techniques have been designed to benefit several areas of dentistry, and the technologies, materials, and devices continue to be optimized. Image-based and accurately printed patient-specific devices to replace, repair, and regenerate dental and maxillofacial structures hold significant potential to maximize the standard of care in dentistry.

Apatite-coated outer layer eggshell membrane: A novel osteoinductive biohybrid composite for guided bone/tissue regeneration

Hybrid biomimetic materials aim to replicate the organic-inorganic constructs of mineralized tissues. During eggshell formation, the outer surface of the eggshell membrane (ESM) promotes calcium carbonate nucleation, while the inner one prevents mineralization toward the egg white and yolk. In the current study, the outer surface of the ESM acted as a heteronucleant in calcium phosphate precipitation by the vapor diffusion sitting drop method, while the inner one remained unmineralized. The aim was to fabricate a 2D biomaterial with dual functions, osteoinductive on one side and protective against cell invasion on the other side. The microstructural, physicochemical, morphological, and mechanical properties of the mineralized ESM were characterized by XRD, TGA, XPS, FTIR/Raman, HR-SEM, and mechanical testing techniques. The cytocompatibility and osteoinductive ability were assessed by biological assays of cell viability, proliferation, and osteogenic differentiation on human mesenchymal stromal cells (hMSCs). Results indicate that the outer surface of the ESM induces the heterogeneous precipitation of carbonate-apatite phase depicting biomimetic features. In addition, the apatite/ESM shows a much higher cytocompatibility than the pristine ESM and promotes the osteogenic differentiation of hMSCs more efficiently. Overall, the apatite/ESM composite exhibits compositional, crystalline, mechanical, and biological properties that resemble those of mineralized tissues, rendering it an approachable and novel material especially useful in guided tissue/bone regeneration.

Polyhydroxyalkanoates: the natural biopolyester for future medical innovations

Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) are a family of natural microbial biopolyesters with the same basic chemical structure and diverse side chain groups. Based on their excellent biodegradability, biocompatibility, thermoplastic properties and diversity, PHAs are highly promising medical biomaterials and elements of medical devices for applications in tissue engineering and drug delivery. However, due to the high cost of biotechnological production, most PHAs have yet to be applied in the clinic and have only been studied at laboratory scale. This review focuses on the biosynthesis, diversity, physical properties, biodegradability and biosafety of PHAs. We also discuss optimization strategies for improved microbial production of commercial PHAs via novel synthetic biology tools. Moreover, we also systematically summarize various medical devices based on PHAs and related design approaches for medical applications, including tissue repair and drug delivery. The main degradation product of PHAs, 3-hydroxybutyrate (3HB), is recognized as a new functional molecule for cancer therapy and immune regulation. Although PHAs still account for only a small percentage of medical polymers, up-and-coming novel medical PHA devices will enter the clinical translation stage in the next few years.

Preparation and characterization of different micro/nano structures on the surface of bredigite scaffolds

The preparation of controllable micro/nano structures on the surface of the bredigite scaffold is expected to exhibit the same support and osteoconductive capabilities as living bone. However, the hydrophobicity of the white calciμm silicate scaffold surface restricts the adhesion and spreading of osteoblasts. Furthermore, during the degradation process of the bredigite scaffold, the release of Ca2+ results in an alkaline environment around the scaffold, which inhibits the growth of osteoblasts. In this study, the three-dimensional geometry of the Primitive surface in the three-periodic minimal surface with an average curvature of 0 was used as the basis for the scaffold unit cell, and a white hydroxyapatite scaffold was fabricated via photopolymerization-based 3D printing. Nanoparticles, microparticles, and micro-sheet structures with thicknesses of 6 μm, 24 μm, and 42 μm, respectively, were prepared on the surface of the porous scaffold through a hydrothermal reaction. The results of the study indicate that the micro/nano surface did not affect the morphology and mineralization ability of the macroporous scaffold. However, the transition from hydrophobic to hydrophilic resulted in a rougher surface and an increase in compressive strength from 45 to 59-86 MPa, while the adhesion of the micro/nano structures enhanced the scaffold's ductility. In addition, after 8 days of degradation, the pH of the degradation solution decreased from 8.6 to around 7.6, which is more suitable for cell growth in the hμman body. However, there were issues of slow degradation and high P element concentration in the degradation solution for the microscale layer group during the degradation process, so the nanoparticle and microparticle group scaffolds could provide effective support and a suitable environment for bone tissue repair.

Doxycycline-doped collagen membranes accelerate in vitro osteoblast proliferation and differentiation

OBJECTIVE

The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of doxycycline- and dexamethasone-doped collagen membranes on the proliferation and differentiation of osteoblasts.

BACKGROUND

Collagen barrier membranes are frequently used to promote bone regeneration and to boost this biological activity their functionalization with antibacterial and immunomodulatory substances has been suggested.

METHODS

The design included commercially available collagen membranes doped with doxycycline (Dox-Col-M) or dexamethasone (Dex-Col-M), as well as undoped membranes (Col-M) as controls, which were placed in contact with cultured MG63 osteoblast-like cells (ATCC). Cell proliferation was assessed by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium (MTT) assay and differentiation by measuring the alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity using spectrophotometry. Real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction was used to study the expression of the genes: Runx-2, OSX, ALP, OSC, OPG, RANKL, Col-I, BMP-2, BMP-7, TGF-β1, VEGF, TGF-βR1, TGF-βR2, and TGF-βR3. Scanning electron microscopy was used to study osteoblast morphology. Data were assessed using one-way analysis of variance or Kruskal-Wallis tests, once their distribution normality was assessed by Kolmogorov-Smirnov tests (p > .05). Bonferroni for multiple comparisons were carried out (p < .05).

RESULTS

Osteoblast proliferation was significantly enhanced in the functionalized membranes as follows: (Col-M < Dex-Col-M < Dox-Col-M). ALP activity was significantly higher on cultured osteoblasts on Dox-Col-M. Runx-2, OSX, ALP, OSC, BMP-2, BMP-7, TGF-β1, VEGF, TGF-βR1, TGF-βR2, and TGF-βR3 were overexpressed, and RANKL was down-regulated in osteoblasts cultured on Dox-Col-M. The osteoblasts cultured in contact with the functionalized membranes demonstrated an elongated spindle-shaped morphology.

CONCLUSION

The functionalization of collagen membranes with Dox promoted an increase in the proliferation and differentiation of osteoblasts.

A nanoconcrete welding strategy for constructing high-performance wound dressing

Engineering biomaterials to meet specific biomedical applications raises high requirements of mechanical performances, and simultaneous strengthening and toughening of polymer are frequently necessary but very challenging in many cases. In this work, we propose a new concept of nanoconcrete welding polymer chains, where mesoporous CaCO₃ (mCaCO₃) nanoconcretes which are composed of amorphous and nanocrystalline phases are developed to powerfully weld polymer chains through siphoning-induced occlusion, hydration-driven crystallization and dehydration-driven compression of nanoconcretes. The mCaCO₃ nanoconcrete welding technology is verified to be able to remarkably augment strength, toughness and anti-fatigue performances of a model polymer poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate)-based porous membrane. Mechanistically, we have revealed polymer-occluded nanocrystal structure and welding-derived microstress which is much stronger than interfacial Van der Waals force, thus efficiently preventing the generation of microcracks and repairing initial microcracks by microcracks-induced hydration, crystallization and polymer welding of mCaCO₃ nanoconcretes. Constructed porous membrane is used as wound dressing, exhibiting a special nanoplates-constructed surface topography as well as a porous structure with plentiful oriented, aligned and opened pore channels, improved hydrophilicity, water vapor permeability, anti-bacterial and cell adherence, in support of wound healing and skin structural/functional repairing. The proposed nanoconcrete-welding-polymer strategy breaks a new pathway for improving the mechanical performances of polymers.

Dexamethasone-Loaded Ureasil Hydrophobic Membrane for Bone Guided Regeneration

Physical barrier membranes have been used to release active substances to treat critical bone defects; however, hydrophilic membranes do not present a prolonged release capacity. In this sense, hydrophobic membranes have been tested. Thus, this study aimed to develop hydrophobic membranes based on mixtures of ureasil-polyether-type materials containing incorporated dexamethasone (DMA) for the application in guided bone regeneration. The physicochemical characterization and biological assays were carried out using small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), an in vitro DMA release study, atomic force microscopy (AFM), a hemolysis test, and in vivo bone formation. The swelling degree, SAXS, and release results revealed that the u-PPO400/2000 membrane in the proportion of 70:30 showed swelling (4.69% ± 0.22) similar to the proportions 90:10 and 80:20, and lower than the proportion 60:40 (6.38% ± 0.49); however, an equal release percentage after 134 h was observed between the proportions 70:30 and 60:40. All u-PPO materials presented hemocompatibility (hemolysis ≤2.8%). AFM results showed that the treatments with or without DMA did not present significant differences, revealing a flat/smooth surface, with no pores and/or crystalline precipitates. Finally, in vivo results revealed that for both the commercial hydrophilic membrane and u-PPO400/2000 (70:30) after 60 days, the bone formation volume was 21%. In conclusion, hybrid membranes present unique characteristics for treating critical bone defects, considering the delayed and prolonged release results associated with the physical barrier capacity.

Advances in Modification Methods Based on Biodegradable Membranes in Guided Bone/Tissue Regeneration: A Review

Guided tissue/bone regeneration (GTR/GBR) is commonly applied in dentistry to aid in the regeneration of bone/tissue at a defective location, where the assistive material eventually degrades to be substituted with newly produced tissue. Membranes separate the rapidly propagating soft tissue from the slow-growing bone tissue for optimal tissue regeneration results. A broad membrane exposure area, biocompatibility, hardness, ductility, cell occlusion, membrane void ratio, tissue integration, and clinical manageability are essential functional properties of a GTR/GBR membrane, although no single modern membrane conforms to all of the necessary characteristics. This review considers ongoing bone/tissue regeneration engineering research and the GTR/GBR materials described in this review fulfill all of the basic ISO requirements for human use, as determined through risk analysis and rigorous testing. Novel modified materials are in the early stages of development and could be classified as synthetic polymer membranes, biological extraction synthetic polymer membranes, or metal membranes. Cell attachment, proliferation, and subsequent tissue development are influenced by the physical features of GTR/GBR membrane materials, including pore size, porosity, and mechanical strength. According to the latest advances, key attributes of nanofillers introduced into a polymer matrix include suitable surface area, better mechanical capacity, and stability, which enhances cell adhesion, proliferation, and differentiation. Therefore, it is essential to construct a bionic membrane that satisfies the requirements for the mechanical barrier, the degradation rate, osteogenesis, and clinical operability.

A Nanofiber Mat With Dual Bioactive Components and a Biomimetic Matrix Structure for Improving Osteogenesis Effect

The challenge of effectively regenerating bone tissue through tissue engineering technology is that most tissue engineering scaffolds cannot imitate the three-dimensional structure and function of the natural extracellular matrix. Herein, we have prepared the poly(L-lactic acid)–based dual bioactive component reinforced nanofiber mats which were named as poly(L-lactic acid)/bovine serum albumin/nanohydroxyapatite (PLLA/BSA/nHAp) with dual bioactive components by combining homogeneous blending and electrospinning technology. The results showed that these nanofiber mats had sufficient mechanical properties and a porous structure suitable for cell growth and migration. Furthermore, the results of cell experiments in vitro showed that PLLA/BSA/nHAp composite nanofiber mat could preferably stimulate the proliferation of mouse osteoblastic cells (MC3T3 cells) compared with pure PLLA nanofiber mats. Based on these results, the scaffolds developed in this study are considered to have a great potential to be adhibited as bone repair materials.

In-vitroassessment of β-tricalcium phosphate/bredigite-ciprofloxacin (CPFX) scaffolds for bone treatment applications

In the present study, β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) scaffolds with various amounts of bredigite (Bre) were fabricated by the space holder method. The effect of bredigite content on the structure, mechanical properties,in vitrobioactivity, and cell viability was investigated. The structural assessment of the composite scaffolds presented interconnected pores with diameter of 300-500 μm with around 78%-82% porosity. The results indicated that the compressive strength of the scaffolds with 20% bredigite (1.91 MPa) was improved in comparison with scaffolds with 10% bredigite (0.52 MPa), due to the reduction of the average pore and grain sizes. Also, the results showed that the bioactivity and biodegradability of β-TCP/20Bre were better than that of β-TCP/10Bre. Besides, in this study, the release kinetics of ciprofloxacin (CPFX) loaded β-TCP/Bre composites as well as the ability of scaffolds to function as a sustained release drug carrier was investigated. Drug release pattern of β-TCP/bredigite-5CPFX scaffolds exhibited the rapid burst release of 43% for 3 h along with sustained release (82%) for 32 h which is favorable for bone infection treatment. Antibacterial tests revealed that the antibacterial properties of β-TCP/bredigite scaffolds are strongly related to the CPFX concentration, wherein the scaffold containing 5% CPFX showed the most significant zone of inhibition (33 ± 0.5 mm) againstStaphylococcus aureus. The higher specific surface areas of nanostructure β-TCP/bredigite scaffolds containing CPFX lead to an initial rapid release followed by constant drug delivery. MTT assay showed that the cell viability of β-TCP/bredigite scaffold loading with up to 1%-3% CPFX (95 ± 2%), is greater than for scaffolds containing 5% CPFX (84 ± 2%). In Overall, it may suggested that β-TCP/bredigite containing 1%-3% CPFX possesses great cell viability and antibacterial activity and be employed as bactericidal biomaterials and bone infection treatment.

Doxycycline-Doped Polymeric Membranes Induced Growth, Differentiation and Expression of Antigenic Phenotype Markers of Osteoblasts

Polymeric membranes are employed in guided bone regeneration (GBR) as physical barriers to facilitate bone in-growth. A bioactive and biomimetic membrane with the ability to participate in the healing and regeneration of the bone is necessary. The aim of the present study was to analyze how novel silicon dioxide composite membranes functionalized with zinc or doxycycline can modulate the osteoblasts' proliferation, differentiation, and expression of selected antigenic markers related to immunomodulation. Nanostructured acrylate-based membranes were developed, blended with silica, and functionalized with zinc or doxycycline. They were subjected to MG63 osteoblast-like cells culturing. Proliferation was assessed by MTT-assay, differentiation by evaluating the alkaline phosphatase activity by a spectrophotometric method and antigenic phenotype was assessed by flow cytometry for selected markers. Mean comparisons were conducted by one-way ANOVA and Tukey tests (p < 0.05). The blending of silica nanoparticles in the tested non-resorbable polymeric scaffold improved the proliferation and differentiation of osteoblasts, but doxycycline doped scaffolds attained the best results. Osteoblasts cultured on doxycycline functionalized membranes presented higher expression of CD54, CD80, CD86, and HLA-DR, indicating a beneficial immunomodulation activity. Doxycycline doped membranes may be a potential candidate for use in GBR procedures in several challenging pathologies, including periodontal disease.

Testing active membranes for bone regeneration: A review

OBJECTIVES

Maxillofacial bone defects are the main hindering conditions for traditional dental implant strategies. Guided Bone Regeneration (GBR) is used to handle this situation. The principle of GBR is to use a membrane to prevent the colonization of soft tissue cells of the bone defect and favors the migration of osteogenic linages. Current membranes do not completely fulfill the requirements that an optimal membrane should have, sometimes resulting in non-predictable results. Thus, the need to develop an ideal membrane to perform this duty is clear. Recent developments in bio-manufacturing are driving innovations in membranes technology permitting the active participation of the membrane in the healing and regenerative process trough native tissue mimicking, drug-delivery and cells interaction, away from being a passive barrier. New membranes features need specific evaluation techniques, beyond the International Standard for membrane materials (last reviewed in 2004), being this the rationale for the present review. Nanotechnology application has completely shifted the way of analyzing structural characterization. New progresses on osteoimmmunomodulation have also switched the understanding of cells-membranes interaction.

DATA AND SOURCES

To propose an updated protocol for GBR membranes evaluation, critical reading of the relevant published literature was carried out after a MEDLINE/PubMed database search.

CONCLUSIONS

The main findings are that a potential active membrane should be assessed in its nanostructure, physicochemical and nanomechanical properties, bioactivity and antibacterial, osteoblasts proliferation, differentiation and mineralization. Immunomodulation testing for macrophages recruitment and M2 phenotype promotion in osteoblasts co-culture has to be achieved to completely analyze membranes/tissue interactions.

On the Interaction between 1D Materials and Living Cells

One-dimensional (1D) materials allow for cutting-edge applications in biology, such as single-cell bioelectronics investigations, stimulation of the cellular membrane or the cytosol, cellular capture, tissue regeneration, antibacterial action, traction force investigation, and cellular lysis among others. The extraordinary development of this research field in the last ten years has been promoted by the possibility to engineer new classes of biointerfaces that integrate 1D materials as tools to trigger reconfigurable stimuli/probes at the sub-cellular resolution, mimicking the in vivo protein fibres organization of the extracellular matrix. After a brief overview of the theoretical models relevant for a quantitative description of the 1D material/cell interface, this work offers an unprecedented review of 1D nano- and microscale materials (inorganic, organic, biomolecular) explored so far in this vibrant research field, highlighting their emerging biological applications. The correlation between each 1D material chemistry and the resulting biological response is investigated, allowing to emphasize the advantages and the issues that each class presents. Finally, current challenges and future perspectives are discussed.

New forms of electrospun nanofiber materials for biomedical applications

Over the past two decades, electrospinning has emerged as an enabling nanotechnology to produce nanofiber materials for various biomedical applications. In particular, therapeutic/cellloaded nanofiber scaffolds have been widely examined in drug delivery, wound healing, and tissue repair and regeneration. However, due to the insufficient porosity, small pore size, noninjectability, and inaccurate spatial control in nanofibers of scaffolds, many efforts have been devoted to exploring new forms of nanofiber materials including expanded nanofiber scaffolds, nanofiber aerogels, short nanofibers, and nanofiber microspheres. This short review discusses the preparation and potential biomedical applications of new forms of nanofiber materials.

Development of a Highly Proliferated Bilayer Coating on 316L Stainless Steel Implants

In this research, a bilayer coating has been applied on the surface of 316 L stainless steel (316LSS) to provide highly proliferated metallic implants for bone regeneration. The first layer was prepared using electrophoretic deposition of graphene oxide (GO), while the top layer was coated utilizing electrospinning of poly (ε-caprolactone) (PCL)/gelatin (Ge)/forsterite solutions. The morphology, porosity, wettability, biodegradability, bioactivity, cell attachment and cell viability of the prepared coatings were evaluated. The Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM) results revealed the formation of uniform, continuous, and bead-free nanofibers. The Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDS) results confirmed well-distributed forsterite nanoparticles in the structure of the top coating. The porosity of the electrospun nanofibers was found to be above 70%. The water contact angle measurements indicated an improvement in the wettability of the coating by increasing the amount of nanoparticles. Furthermore, the electrospun nanofibers containing 1 and 3 wt.% of forsterite nanoparticles showed significant bioactivity after soaking in the simulated body fluid (SBF) solution for 21 days. In addition, to investigate the in vitro analysis, the MG-63 cells were cultured on the PCL/Ge/forsterite and GO-PCL/Ge/forsterite coatings. The results confirmed an excellent cell adhesion along with considerable cell growth and proliferation. It should be also noted that the existence of the forsterite nanoparticles and the GO layer substantially enhanced the cell proliferation of the coatings.

Bacterial cellulose micro-nano fibres for wound healing applications

Bacterial cellulose (BC) is cellulose produced by a few limited species of bacteria in given conditions. BC has many remarkable properties such as its attractive mechanical properties, water uptake ability and biocompatibility which makes it a very desirable material to be used for wound healing. Inherently due to these important properties, the material is very resistant to easy processing and thus difficult to produce into useful entities. Additionally, being rate limited by the dependency on bacterial production, high yield is difficult to obtain and thus secondary material processing is sought after. In this review, BC is explained in terms of synthesis, structure and properties. These beneficial properties are directly related to the material's great potential in wound healing where it has also been trialled commercially but ultimately failed due to processing issues. However, more recently there has been increased frequency in scientific work relating to BC processing into hybrid polymeric fibres using common laboratory fibre forming techniques such as electrospinning and pressurised gyration. This paper summarises current progress in BC fibre manufacturing, its downfalls and also gives a future perspective on how the landscape should change to allow BC to be utilised in wound care in the current environment.

Regenerative medicine and drug delivery: Progress via electrospun biomaterials

Worldwide research on electrospinning enabled it as a versatile technique for producing nanofibers with specified physio-chemical characteristics suitable for diverse biomedical applications. In the case of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, the nanofiber scaffolds' characteristics are custom designed based on the cells and tissues specific needs. This fabrication technique is also innovated for the production of nanofibers with special micro-structure and secondary structure characteristics such as porous fibers, hollow structure, and core- sheath structure. This review attempts to critically and succinctly capture the vast number of developments reported in the literature over the past two decades. We then discuss their applications as scaffolds for induction of cells growth and differentiation or as architecture for being used as graft for tissue engineering. The special nanofibers designed for improving regeneration of several tissues including heart, bone, central nerve system, spinal cord, skin and ocular tissue are introduced. We also discuss the potential of the electrospinning in drug delivery applications, which is a critical factor for cell culture, tissue formation and wound healing applications.

Preparation of Ag Doped Keratin/PA6 Nanofiber Membrane with Enhanced Air Filtration and Antimicrobial Properties

Coarse wool is a kind of goat wool that is difficult to further process in the textile industry due to its large diameter, dispersion, better strength, and less bending. Therefore, coarse wool is often discarded as waste or made into low-cost products. In this work, keratin was extracted from coarse wool by a high-efficiency method, and then, an Ag-doped keratin/PA6 composite nanofiber membrane with enhanced filtration and antibacterial performance was prepared using HCOOH as solvent and reductant. HAADF-STEM (high-angle annular dark field-scanning transmission electron microscopy) shows that AgNPs are uniformly distributed in keratin/PA6 (30/70) nanofibers. TGA (Thermogravimetric Analysis) and DSC (Differential Scanning Calorimetry) were employed to investigate the thermal stability of composite membranes with different keratin and AgNP contents. The present keratin as a dopant with polyamide-6 (PA6) was found not only to improve air filtration efficiency but also to enhance water–vapour transmission (WVT). The addition of the Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) gave a strong antibacterial activity to the composite membrane against Staphylococcus aureus (99.62%) and Escherichia coli (99.10%). Bacterial filtration efficiency (BFE) of the composite membrane against S. aureus and E. coli were up to 96.8% and 95.6%, respectively. All of the results suggested a great potential for coarse wool extraction and application in the air filtration field.
