Abstract
Zinc (Zn) is an essential and the second most abundant trace element after Iron. It can apply antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-apoptotic activity. It is assumed to be indispensable for cell division, cellular differentiation and cell signalling. Zinc is essential for proper liver function which is also the site of its metabolism. Depleted Zn concentrations have been observed in both acute and chronic hepatic diseases. It is reported that Zn deficiency or abnormal Zn metabolism during majority of liver diseases is attributed to deficient dietary intake of Zn, augmented disposal of Zn in the urine, activation of certain Zn transporters, and expression of hepatic metallothionein. Undoubtedly, Zn is involved in generating many diseases but how and whether it plays role from acute to fulminant stage of all chronic liver diseases remains to be cleared. Here, we will discuss the role of Zn in development of different diseases specifically the involvement of Zn to understand the aetiology and intricate mechanism of dynamic liver diseases.

Abstract
Essential trace element zinc is associated with decreased lung cancer risk, but underlying mechanisms remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate role of DNA methylation in zinc-lung cancer association. We conducted a case-cohort study within prospective Dongfeng-Tongji cohort, including 359 incident lung cancer cases and a randomly selected sub-cohort of 1399 participants. Epigenome-wide association study (EWAS) was used to examine association of plasma zinc with DNA methylation in peripheral blood. For the zinc-related CpGs, their mediation effects on zinc-lung cancer association were assessed; their diagnostic performance for lung cancer was testified in the case-cohort study and further validated in another 126 pairs of lung cancer case-control study. We identified 28 CpGs associated with plasma zinc at P < 1.0 × 10-5 and seven of them (cg07077080, cg01077808, cg17749033, cg15554270, cg26125625, cg10669424, and cg15409013 annotated to GSR, CALR3, SLC16A3, PHLPP2, SLC12A8, VGLL4, and ADAMTS16, respectively) were associated with incident risk of lung cancer. Moreover, the above seven CpGs were differently methylated between 126 pairs of lung cancer and adjacent normal lung tissues and had the same directions with EWAS of zinc. They could mediate a separate 7.05%∼22.65% and a joint 29.42% of zinc-lung cancer association. Compared to using traditional factors, addition of methylation risk score exerted improved discriminations for lung cancer both in case-cohort study [area under the curve (AUC) = 0.818 vs. 0.738] and in case-control study (AUC = 0.816 vs. 0.646). Our results provide new insights for the biological role of DNA methylation in the inverse association of zinc with incident lung cancer.

Abstract
Since there's been an upsurge in people with diabetes or pre-diabetes conditions, many studies have been conducted to evaluate approaches for reducing the complications of diabetes. One of the most common therapeutic elements suggested for this purpose is zinc (Zn). Zn has long been shown to positively improve complications of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. This review aims to provide comprehensive information about the influence of Zn on the various signaling pathways in multiple tissues with diabetic conditions, with great attention to the treatment period and effective dose of Zn.

Abstract
The current study was designed to investigate the effects of zinc sulfate on cell proliferation, metallothionein (MT) immunoreactivity and antioxidant system against acute ethanol-induced oxidative damage in tongue tissues of rats. Wistar albino male rats, 2.5 to 3.0 months, were divided into four groups: Group I (n = 8), intact control rats; group II (n = 8), control animals given only zinc sulfate (100 mg/kg/day, for 3 consecutive days); group III (n = 14), animals given 1 mL absolute ethanol; group IV (n = 11), animals given zinc sulfate and absolute ethanol at the same dose and time. Animals were sacrificed under anesthesia 2 h after ethanol administration or 4 h after the last zinc sulfate treatment. Ethanol administration caused a marked decrease in the number of MT immunopositive cells and the proliferating cells in the lingual epithelium. A statistically significant decline in reduced glutathione levels, catalase activity and superoxide dismutase activities was also observed, whereas a significant elevation of lipid peroxidation levels and lactate dehydrogenase activities was detected in the ethanol group. In contrast, these changes were reversed by administration of zinc sulfate to ethanol-treated rats. In conclusion, it shows that zinc sulfate has therapeutic effects on acute ethanol-induced oxidative damage in the tongue tissues of rats.

Abstract
AIM Onion is one of the commonly cultivated and consumed vegetables rich in nutrients and phytochemicals. Various nutraceuticals are found in the outer fleshy layers and dry peel of onion which usually is treated as a common biowaste. Diabetes mellitus is a leading non communicable disease causing hyperglycemia and increased production of free radicals that potentially disrupts antioxidant enzymatic activity. Considering global consumption of wheat, the present study was designed to evaluate the anti-hyperglycemic and antioxidant effects of wheat bread supplemented with onion peel extract (OPE) or onion powder (OP) on diabetic rats. METHODS In this study, ethanolic extract of onion peel and onion bulb were prepared separately. Male Sprague Dawley rats were divided into 6 groups (n = 7). Different regimens of supplemented wheat bread (OPE (1% and 3%) and OP (5% and 7%)) were given to diabetic rats for eight weeks, plain bread was used as the control. Blood glucose level, body weight and activities of SOD, CAT, GPx, GR, GSH and MDA in the liver and kidney tissues were evaluated. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS Version (25) and Dunnett's multiple comparison test. RESULTS Bread supplemented with 1% and 3% onion peel extract and 7% onion powder significantly reduced blood glucose levels and MDA in the treated rats compared with the control group diabetic rats. Body weight of diabetic rats was reduced for control group, while onion supplemented diet improved the body weight of treated rats. Onion supplementation also brought significant improvement in antioxidant enzyme activities among the treated diabetic rats. CONCLUSION These findings suggested that onion supplementation is effective in lowering blood glucose and could potentially aid in protecting organs from oxidative stress.

Abstract
SARS-CoV-2 or COVID-19 is a novel coronavirus, which is the cause of the current pandemic with 107,411,561 infections and 2,351,195 death worldwide so far. There are multiple symptoms that are linked with the infection of COVID-19 such as coughing, shortness of breath, congestion together with fatigue, fever, loss of taste or smell, headaches, diarrhea, vomiting, and loss of appetite. The lack of or early stage of development of a cure for COVID-19 illness, there is need for insuring the best possible position of health to be able to fight the virus naturally through a robust immune system to limit severe complication. In this article, we have discussed the role of fruits and vegetables consumption to boost the immune system and major emphasis has been given to high risk group. We have taken into consideration a number of underlying conditions such as people with cardiovascular diseases, obesity, diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, chronic kidney disease, hemoglobin disorder such as sickle cell disease, weakened immune system due to organ transplant. Furthermore, factors to improve the immune system, risks associated with quarantine and lifestyle and food handling during COVID-19 has been discussed.

Abstract
Zinc is an essential trace element that is often reduced under the type 1 diabetic condition. Previous studies demonstrated that zinc deficiency enhanced type 1 diabetes-induced liver injury and that zinc supplementation significantly helped to prevent this. Due to the differences in pathogenesis between type 1 and type 2 diabetes, it is unknown whether zinc supplementation can induce a beneficial effect on type 2 diabetes-induced liver injury. This possible protective mechanism was investigated in the present study. A high-fat diet, along with a one-time dose of streptozotocin, was applied to metallothionein (MT) knockout mice, nuclear factor-erythroid 2-related factor (Nrf) 2 knockout mice, and age-matched wild-type (WT) control mice, in order to induce type 2 diabetes. This was followed by zinc treatment at 5 mg/kg body weight given every other day for 3 months. Global metabolic disorders of both glucose and lipids were unaffected by zinc supplementation. This induced preventive effects on conditions caused by type 2 diabetes like oxidative stress, apoptosis, the subsequent hepatic inflammatory response, fibrosis, hypertrophy, and hepatic dysfunction. Additionally, we also observed that type 2 diabetes reduced hepatic MT expression, while zinc supplementation induced hepatic MT expression. This is a crucial antioxidant. A mechanistic study showed that MT deficiency blocked zinc supplementation-induced hepatic protection under the condition of type 2 diabetes. This suggested that endogenous MT is involved in the hepatic protection of zinc supplementation in type 2 diabetic mice. Furthermore, zinc supplementation-induced hepatic MT increase was unobserved once Nrf2 was deficient, indicating that Nrf2 mediated the upregulation of hepatic MT in response to zinc supplementation. Results of this study indicated that zinc supplementation prevented type 2 diabetes-induced liver injury through the activation of the Nrf2-MT-mediated antioxidative pathway.
