Abstract
CONTEXT Ferroptosis is a novel form of cell death characterised by iron overload and lipid peroxidation. It is closely associated with many diseases, including cardiovascular diseases, tumours, and neurological diseases. The use of natural chemicals to modulate ferroptosis is of great concern because of the critical role ferroptosis plays in disease. The main active ingredient in green tea is epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), which is the most abundant catechin in green tea. EGCG shows a wide range of biological and therapeutic effects in various diseases, including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anticancer, and cardioprotective. OBJECTIVE The purpose of this article is to summarise the existing information on the relationship between EGCG and ferroptosis. METHODS Articles related to EGCG and ferroptosis were searched in PubMed and Web of Science databases, and the literature was analysed. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION EGCG could improve ferroptosis-related diseases and affect the development of ferroptosis by regulating the nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2, autophagy, microRNA, signal transducer and activator of transcription 1, and protein kinase D1 signalling pathways.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) occurs in >50% of diabetic patients and is a high risk-factor of balance problems and risk of falls. Impaired balance can lead to reduced function, which has a detrimental effect on patients' quality of life. Structured strength and balance training can result in sustained improvements in muscle strength, coordination, balance, functional status and quality of life. OBJECTIVE To determine the combined effects of strength and balance training versus aerobic training on balance, severity of symptoms of DPN, and quality of life in patients with DPN. METHODS This double blinded, two arm parallel design Randomized Clinical Trial. The study was conducted from March to December 2020 in the AIMS diabetic center Peshawar, Pakistan. Participants were selected through convenience sampling technique and randomly allocated into strength plus balance and aerobic training groups. Type 2 diabetic patients of both sexes, aged 40 to 80 years, with a Toronto neuropathy score ≥6 recruited, while patients with ulceration/infection of feet, medical/Surgical conditions, and non-ambulatory patients were excluded from this study. Intervention was applied 3 days a week for 8 weeks. The Toronto clinical neuropathy system was used to assess neuropathy severity, SF-36 to assess quality of life and the Berg balance scale was used for assessment of balance. Assessment was done at the baseline and after 8 weeks of intervention using SPSS. Version 22 was used for analysis. RESULTS The mean age of the participants was 60.80 ± 9.73. Between group analysis, which showed were statistically insignificant for neuropathy severity, balance and all domains of quality of life (p-value >0.05) except SF-36 General Health Perception Score, with Mean ± SD of 62.50 ± 7.54 in group A versus Mean ± SD of in group B 60.00 ± 15.98 (p-value = 0.05). Within group analysis showed statistically significant results for neuropathy severity, balance and all domains of quality of life (p-value<0.05). CONCLUSION This study concluded that there is a statistically significant effect of structured balance and strength training and aerobic training on severity of DPN, balance and quality of life. But there was no statistically significant difference in improvement between the two intervention groups.

Abstract
Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is a serious complication of diabetes, and its progression is influenced by factors like oxidative stress, inflammation, cell death, and fibrosis. Compared to drug treatment, exercise offers a cost-effective and low-risk approach to slowing down DN progression. Through multiple ways and mechanisms, exercise helps to control blood sugar and blood pressure and reduce serum creatinine and albuminuria, thereby alleviating kidney damage. This review explores the beneficial effects of exercise on DN improvement and highlights its potential mechanisms for ameliorating DN. In-depth understanding of the role and mechanism of exercise in improving DN would pave the way for formulating safe and effective exercise programs for the treatment and prevention of DN.

Abstract
Diabetic nephropathy causes cardiovascular complications among individuals with diabetes which results in decreased kidney function and overall physical decline. The objective of this systematic review was to determine effects of exercise on various renal function parameters amond individuals with type 2 diabetes and nephropathy. It was registered with PROSPERO (CRD42020198754). Total 6 databases (PubMed/Medline, Scopus, Web of Science, CINAHL, ProQuest, and Cochrane) were searched. Among 1734 records, only four randomized controlled trials were included. The review included a total of 203 participants (103 in the intervention group and 100 in the control/standard group) with type 2 diabetic nephropathy or stage 2,3, or 4 of chronic kidney disease. The meta-analysis showed no effects of exercise on serum creatinine, serum cystatin c and varied eGFR equations. However, exercise decreased urinary albumin to creatinine ratio, urinary protein to creatinine ratio, serum urea nitrogen, creatinine clearance, and urinary protein excretion while increasing urea clearance. Limited evidence on the reno-protective role of exercise demands future research in this direction.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The aim of this study was to compare the macular retinal vessel density (VD) of diabetics with high myopia, diabetics without high myopia, and healthy controls. METHODS This cross-sectional study recruited type 2 diabetic (T2D) people with no history of ocular treatment in our hospital. Thirty T2D people with high myopia (30 eyes) were included in group A, while 30 T2D people (30 eyes) without myopia were included in group B. Another 30 healthy volunteers (30 eyes) were included in group C. The superficial and deep capillary plexuses VD of the macula were measured in all subjects by optical coherence tomography angiography. In T2D people with high myopia, the correlation between VD in macular regions and baseline data was investigated. RESULTS (1) Overall comparison of the 3 groups: no statistically significant differences in macular central superficial vessel density (SVD) were found in the three groups (p > 0.05). There were significant differences in the temporal, superior, nasal, inferior SVD between the 3 groups (p < 0.05). There were significant differences in macular central, temporal, superior, nasal, and inferior deep vessel density (DVD) between the three groups (p < 0.05). (2) Comparison of B (no myopia, T2D group) and C (healthy control group): inferior SVD in group B was lower than that in group C (p < 0.05). Temporal, superior, nasal, and inferior DVD in group B were lower than those in group C (p < 0.05). (3) A (high myopia group, T2D) compared with B (no myopia, T2D group), A group compared with C (healthy control group): temporal, superior, nasal, inferior SVD and DVD in group A were all lower than those in group B and C (p < 0.05), DVD in group B was lower than those in group C (p < 0.05). (4) The mean SVD and DVD were not correlated with age, IOP, anterior chamber depth, corneal curvature, but they were negatively correlated with axial length and duration of diabetes in the T2D people with high myopia. CONCLUSION Myopia and diabetes are two important factors affecting macular retinal VD. Comparing with the eyes of T2D people without high myopia, the VD in macular regions shows a higher decline in the eyes of T2D people with high myopia.

Abstract
Substantial evidence highlights the association between physical inactivity and diabetes onset and complications. Little is known regarding the link between physical inactivity and diabetic retinopathy in terms of onset, progression, and severity. This review aims to investigate these associations and understand the underlying mechanisms behind these associations. Decreased sedentary times and the inclusion of more physical activity have been linked to the delayed onset and progression of diabetic retinopathy and less severe forms of said condition. Physical activity provides both protective and anti-inflammatory effects on the retina. Further research is needed to understand and elucidate the exact mechanisms by which lack of physical activity affects retinal health and the onset, progression, and severity of diabetic retinopathy.

Abstract
Background: Diabetic cardiomyopathy (DCM), the main complication of diabetes mellitus, presents as cardiac dysfunction by ventricular remodeling. In addition, the inhibition of P2X7 purinergic receptors (P2X7R) alleviates cardiac fibrosis and apoptosis in Type 1 diabetes. However, whether exercise training improves cardiac remodeling by regulating P2X7R remains unknown. Methods: Db/db mice spontaneously induced with type 2 diabetes and high-fat diet (HFD) and mice with streptozotocin (STZ)-induced type 2 diabetes mice were treated by 12-week treadmill training. Cardiac functions were observed by two-dimensional echocardiography. Hematoxylin-eosin staining, Sirius red staining and transmission electron microscopy were respectively used to detect cardiac morphology, fibrosis and mitochondria. In addition, real-time polymerase chain reaction and Western Blot were used to detect mRNA and protein levels. Results: Studying the hearts of db/db mice and STZ-induced mice, we found that collagen deposition and the number of disordered cells significantly increased compared with the control group. However, exercise markedly reversed these changes, and the same tendency was observed in the expression of MMP9, COL-I, and TGF-β, which indicated cardiac fibrotic and hypertrophic markers, including ANP and MyHC expression. In addition, the increased Caspase-3 level and the ratio of Bax/Bcl2 were reduced by exercise training, and similar results were observed in the TUNEL test. Notably, the expression of P2X7R was greatly upregulated in the hearts of db/db mice and HFD + STZ-induced DM mice and downregulated by aerobic exercise. Moreover, we indicated that P2X7R knock out significantly reduced the collagen deposition and disordered cells in the DM group. Furthermore, the apoptosis levels and TUNEL analysis were greatly inhibited by exercise or in the P2X7R-/- group in DM. We found significant differences between the P2X7R-/- + DM + EX group and DM + EX group in myocardial tissue apoptosis and fibrosis, in which the former is significantly milder. Moreover, compared with the P2X7R-/- + DM group, the P2X7R-/- + DM + EX group represented a lower level of cardiac fibrosis. The expression levels of TGF-β at the protein level and TGF-β and ANP at the genetic level were evidently decreased in the P2X7R-/- + DM + EX group. Conclusion: Aerobic exercise reversed cardiac remodeling in diabetic mice at least partly through inhibiting P2X7R expression in cardiomyocytes.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Changes in the skeletal muscle are common in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). These changes impair your motor skills. OBJECTIVE This systematic review aimed to investigate changes in skeletal muscle in patients with T2DM. METHODS The search was carried out in the PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases until December 1, 2021. Observational studies that evaluated musculoskeletal changes in people with T2DM were included. The review was based on PRISMA recommendations. The primary parameters analyzed were muscle strength, muscle mass, muscle power, and muscle endurance. RESULTS Forty-eight studies were included, with a total of 26,042 participants. The results revealed that T2DM is associated with a reduction in handgrip [-2.64 (CI 95% = -3.33 to -1.95, Z = -7.50, p < .0001], and knee extension muscle strength [-0.56 (CI 95% = -0.76 to -0.36, Z = -5.64, p < .0001)], a higher percentage of type II fibers [11.74 (CI 95% = 6.24 to 17.25, Z = 4.18, p < .0001)], and a lower percentage of type I fibers [-15.69 (CI 95% = -18.22 to -13.16, Z = -12.16, p < .0001], in addition to a greater thickness of the calcaneus tendon (p < .0001). CONCLUSION Individuals with T2DM present skeletal muscle impairments, mainly reduced muscle strength, mass, and endurance; increase in the thickness of the calcaneus tendon, and alteration in the proportion of type I and II fibers, even in the initial stage of the disease.

Abstract
Background
Both physical inactivity and sedentary behavior are considered modifiable risk factors for chronic diseases and all-cause mortality. Adult office-workers spend most of their working day in sedentary behaviors, so they are particularly at high risk of developed chronic diseases (e.g., cardiovascular diseases, metabolic disorders like diabetes mellitus, …). It seems important to promote behavioral changes that could prevent or delay metabolic disease development. Evidence supports the use of exercise programs, however, to date there are several knowledge gaps and inconsistencies in the literature regarding the effects of Combined Training (i.e., aerobic plus resistance training) in sedentary healthy adults. This paper outlines an RCT designed to evaluate the effects of a 16-week combined training program on biochemical and immune markers of metabolic disease, lung function, salivary stress hormones and subjective quality of life (primary outcomes), as well as on body composition and physical fitness (secondary outcomes) in sedentary middle-aged office-workers. Furthermore, we aimed to assess the associations between the changes promoted by the exercise program and the different variables studied.
Methods and design
This is a single-blinded two-arm RCT with parallel groups. A minimum of healthy 40 office-workers aged 40–64 years will be recruited to engage in a 16-week intervention study. After baseline assessments, participants will be randomized to one of the two groups: (1) combined training group or (2) control group. Baseline assessments will be repeated after 8 weeks of intervention (mid-testing) and upon completion of the intervention (post-testing).
Discussion
This RCT involves a multi-disciplinary approach and seems to be a relevant contribution to understanding the potential role of combined training in improving the metabolic profile, lung function, stress, and quality of life in adults. The results can provide important insights for clinical recommendations and for the optimization of strategies to prevent metabolic disorders in adults with sedentary jobs.

Abstract
Autophagy, known as a "self-eating" process, is associated with degradation of aged or damaged components and organelles. Generally, autophagy is a survival mechanism that provides energy during nutritional deprivation. This mechanism plays a remarkable role during the physiological condition by maintaining homeostasis and energy balance and several pathological conditions, particularly neurological disorders. Due to the critical role of autophagy in cancer, much attention has been made in the regulation of autophagy using both naturally occurring and synthetic drugs. Quercetin is a plant-derived chemical belonging to the family of flavonoids. Quercetin has valuable biological and therapeutic effects such as anti-tumor, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic, hepatoprotective, and cardioprotective. At the present review, we first provide an introduction about quercetin and autophagy with its related molecular pathways. We also describe how quercetin modulates autophagy mechanism to exert its therapeutic effects.

Abstract
The use of herb-based therapies is increasing over the past decades. These agents have been reported to provide many beneficial effects in many experimental and clinical studies. Curcumin is one of these agents which has potent pharmacological effects enabling it for the prevent and treatment of many diseases and pathologies such as renal disorders, hyperglycemia, oxidative stress, hypertension, and dyslipidemia. However, the exact molecular mechanisms mediating these renoprotective effects of curcumin are not well established. So, in the current study, we surveyed for possible renoprotective roles of curcumin and concluded how curcumin protects against renal injuries.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Curcumin is an antioxidant agent that improves glycemia in animal models of diabetes. Clinically curcumin use is limited due to poor solubility, weak absorption, and low bioavailability; therefore, this study to investigate the effects of curcumin's analog, difluorinated curcumin (CDF), on fasting blood glucose (FBG), oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT), and insulin tolerance test (ITT), in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats was undertaken. METHODS STZ-induced diabetes rats were randomly assigned to six groups (7 rats per group). They were treated daily by oral gavage with curcumin (200 and 100 mg/kg/day), CDF (200 and 100 mg/kg/day), and metformin (200 mg/kg/day) as a positive control group, for 4 weeks. Two diabetic control (DC) and normal control (NC) groups (non-diabetic rats) received normal saline and citrate buffer, respectively. FBG was measured at the beginning and end of the treatment (Day 0 and week 4) and OGTT and ITT were performed to determine glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity. RESULTS Cur100, CDF 100, and CDF200 significantly decreased FBG levels after 4 weeks oral administration by -34% (-150 mg/dL ± 70, p = 0.02), -36% (123 mg/dL ±67, p < 0.04), and - 40% (-189 mg/dL ± 91, p = 0.03), respectively. Glucose sensitivity by OGTT showed a significant improvement in glucose tolerance ability in all treated groups compared with DC group. ITT demonstrated that insulin response improved significantly in Cur100 and CDF 200 groups. CONCLUSION Overall, CDF improved glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity, while reducing FBG compared to curcumin, suggesting that curcumin analogs may have therapeutic utility in diabetes.

Abstract
The prevalence of insulin resistance and diabetes mellitus is rising globally in epidemic proportions. Diabetes and its complications contribute to significant morbidity and mortality. An increase in sedentary lifestyle and consumption of a more energydense diet increased the incidence of obesity which is a significant risk factor for type 2 diabetes. Obesity acts as a potent upstream event that promotes molecular mechanisms involved in insulin resistance and diabetes mellitus. However, the exact molecular mechanisms between obesity and diabetes are not clearly understood. In the current study, we have reviewed the molecular interactions between obesity and type 2 diabetes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Type 2 diabetes is more frequent in Latin American people than in non-Hispanic whites due to a combination of genetic and lifestyle risk factors. Brazil and Mexico are the most populous countries in Latin America. The present study aimed to compare the results of the National Health Survey "PNS" in Brazil and the National Survey Health and Nutrition "ENSANUT" in Mexico regarding the prevalence, complications and healthcare issues of diabetes in both countries. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted with data from the National Health Survey (PNS) of 2013 in Brazil and the National Survey of Health and Nutrition (ENSANUT) of 2018 in Mexico. The prevalence of diabetes, complications and risk factors related to developing diabetes were considered. RESULTS The respondents included 3636 individuals in Brazil and 4555 individuals in Mexico. There were significant differences in age and time living with diabetes between the two countries. Mexican people had twice as likely as Brazilian people to have a complication (p < 0.0001). The principal risk factor (OR 2.47; p ≤ 0.0001) for developing any diabetic complication was living with diabetes for more than 15 years. Visual impairment was the most frequent complication in both countries, but it was more prevalent in Mexico (p ≤ 0.001). CONCLUSIONS Diabetes complications are important health problems in Brazil and Mexico. Visual impairment was the principal complication in both countries. Several factors, such as access to and type of health system, living in a rural area, treatment, BMI and performing preventive actions, affected the risk of developing a complication. However, living with diabetes for more than 15 years was the principal risk factor. National health surveys have added significant information on the impact of diabetes in these Latin American populations. This comparison of data could provide valuable information to guide national policies and program decisions in both countries.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cardiovascular complications account for the majority of deaths caused by diabetes mellitus. Platelet hyperactivity has been shown to increase the risk of thrombotic events and is a therapeutic target for their prevention in diabetes. Modulation of platelet function by diabetes agents in addition to their hypoglycemic effects would contribute to cardiovascular protection. Newly introduced antidiabetic drugs of sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i), glucagon like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RA) and dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors may have anti-platelet effects, and in the case of SGLT2i and GLP-1RA may contribute to their proven cardiovascular benefit that has been shown clinically. OBJECTIVE Here, we reviewed the potential effects of these agents on platelet function in diabetes. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION GLP-1RA and DPP-4i drugs have antiplatelet properties beyond their primary hypoglycemic effects. Whilst we have little direct evidence for the antiplatelet effects of SGLT2 inhibitors, some studies have shown that these agents may inhibit platelet aggregation and reduce the risk of thrombotic events in diabetes.

Abstract
Exercise is a convenient non-medical intervention, commonly recommended in metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes (DM2) managements. Aerobic exercise and aerobic circuit training have been shown to be able to reduce the risk of developing DM2-related complications. Growing literature proves the usefulness of Nordic walking as exercise therapy in different disease populations, therefore it has a conceivable use in DM2 management. Aims of this study were to analyze and report the effects of two different supervised exercises (gym-based exercise and Nordic walking) on anthropometric profile, blood pressure values, blood chemistry and fitness variables in obese individuals with and without DM2. In this study, 108 obese adults (aged 45-65 years), with or without DM2, were recruited and allocated into one of four subgroups: (1) Gym-based exercise program (n = 49) or (2) Nordic walking program (n = 37) for obese adults; (3) Gym-based exercise program (n = 10) or (4) Nordic walking program (n = 12) for obese adults with DM2. In all exercise subgroups, statistically significant improvements in body weight, body mass index, fat mass index, muscular flexibility and maximal oxygen uptake (VO2 max) were observed. Moreover, a higher percentage of adherence to the gym-based program compared to Nordic walking was recorded. Our findings showed that, notwithstanding the lower adherence, a supervised Nordic walk is effective as a conventional gym-based program to improve body weight control, body composition parameters, muscular flexibility and VO2 max levels in obese adults with and without type 2 diabetes.

Abstract
IMPACT STATEMENT Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) is associated with increased mortality in diabetic patients and has a negative impact on public health. The identification of potential therapies that help the management of DKD can contribute to the improvement of health and quality of life of patients. Thus, this paper is timely and relevant because, in addition to presenting a concise review of the pathogenesis and major pathophysiological mechanisms of DKD, it addresses the most recent findings on the impact of exercise training on this disease. Thus, since non-pharmacological interventions have gained increasing attention in the fight against chronic diseases, this paper appears as an important tool to increase knowledge and stimulate innovative research on the impact of exercise on kidney disease.

Abstract
Oxidative stress is involved in the development of diabetes. Nitric oxide (NO) contributes to oxidative stress, affects the synthesis of glutathione (GSH) in tissues and also regulates important physiological processes. The levels of nitrosative stress, assessed by measuring the levels of 3-nitrotirosina (3NT) as well as the bioavailability of NO are modulated by exercise and hyperbaric oxygenation (HBO). The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of exercise and HBO on the levels of NO, 3NT and GSH in tissues of various organs obtained from diabetic mice. Female mice were fed a high-fat/high-fructose diet to induce diabetes. Mice with diabetes were subjected to exercise and/or HBO. Initial and final concentrations of NO, 3NT and GSH were assessed in the muscle, liver, kidney, heart, spleen, lung, brain, visceral adipose, thoracic aorta and small intestine. Diabetes did not affect initial values of NO, although it significantly increased the levels of 3NT. The basal level of GSH in the diabetic group was lower than or comparable to that of the control group in the majority of the organs assessed. A negative correlation was observed between 3NT and GSH levels in the initial values of all tissues of the control group only, whereas all pathological tissues showed a positive correlation between NO and GSH. There was an increase or a stabilization of GSH levels in the majority of the organs in all treated mice despite the increase in nitrosative stress.

Abstract
Background and Objectives: Dyslipidaemia and its associated complications have been reported to increase mortality among type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients. However, there is a dearth of data on the incidence of dyslipidemia among Ghanaian patients with T2DM. This study evaluated dyslipidemia among newly diagnosed T2DM patients at Dormaa Presbyterian Hospital, Ghana. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study recruited a total of 215 participants at the Presbyterian Hospital, Dormaa-Ghana. A well-structured questionnaire was administered to collect demographic data. Predisposing factors of dyslipidemia such as BMI, hypertension, and family history of diabetes were also obtained. Lipid profile was performed on the serum obtained from each respondent. Dyslipidaemia was defined as total cholesterol (TC) >200 mg/dL, triglyceride (TG) >150 mg/dL, low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c) >100 mg/dL, and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c) <40 in males and <50 mg/dL in females. Combinations of the individual parameters of dyslipidaemia were further evaluated. Results: Of the total (215) participants, 86 (40%) were males and 129 (60%) were females, representing a ratio of 1:1.5. High total cholesterol was more prevalent in females (69.0%) than males (53.5%). Generally, dyslipidaemia was predominant among those aged >40 years, with the exception of increased LDL-c (25.1%), which was higher among the 20–40 years age group. The male participants exhibited significantly (p < 0.001) higher percentages of all combined measures of dyslipidaemia—such as high TG and reduced HDL-c (77.9%), high TG and elevated LDL-c (75.6%) and high LDL and low HDL (65.1%). BMI was significantly associated with HDL levels (p = 0.02), whereas family history of diabetes was associated with TC (p = 0.004) and TG levels (p = 0.019). Conclusion: Combined dyslipidaemia is relatively high among newly diagnosed T2DM patients in Ghana, and in those >40 years. Gender is significantly associated with combined dyslipidaemia in T2DM, and males may be at a higher risk than females. BMI and family history of diabetes are potential risk factors of dyslipidaemia in T2DM.

Abstract
Diabetes mellitus is the most prevalent metabolic disorder contributing to significant morbidity and mortality in humans. Many preventative and therapeutic agents have been developed for normalizing glycemic profile in patients with diabetes. In addition to various pharmacologic strategies, many non-pharmacological agents have also been suggested to improve glycemic control in patients with diabetes. Trehalose is a naturally occurring disaccharide which is not synthesized in human but is widely used in food industries. Some studies have provided evidence indicating that it can potentially modulate glucose metabolism and help to stabilize glucose homeostasis in patients with diabetes. Studies have shown that trehalose can significantly modulate insulin sensitivity via at least 7 molecular pathways leading to better control of hyperglycemia. In the current study, we concluded about possible anti-hyperglycemic effects of trehalose suggesting trehalose as a potentially potent non-pharmacological agent for the management of diabetes.
