TE interleaving: new multisection imaging technique

Accelerated diffusion and relaxation-diffusion MRI using time-division multiplexing EPI

PURPOSE

To develop a time-division multiplexing echo-planar imaging (TDM-EPI) sequence for approximately two- to threefold acceleration when acquiring joint relaxation-diffusion MRI data with multiple TEs.

METHODS

The proposed TDM-EPI sequence interleaves excitation and data collection for up to 3 separate slices at different TEs and uses echo-shifting gradients to disentangle the overlapping echo signals during the readout period. By properly arranging the sequence event blocks for each slice and adjusting the echo-shifting gradients, diffusion-weighted images from separate slices can be acquired. Therefore, we present 2 variants of the sequence. A single-TE TDM-EPI is presented to demonstrate the concept. Next, a multi-TE TDM-EPI is presented to highlight the advantages of the TDM approach for relaxation-diffusion imaging. These sequences were evaluated on a 3 Tesla scanner with a water phantom and in vivo human brain data.

RESULTS

The single-TE TDM-EPI sequence can simultaneously acquire 2 slices with a maximum b value of 3000 s/mm² and 2.5 mm isotropic resolution using interleaved readout windows with TE ≈ 78 ms. With the same b value and resolution, the multi-TE TDM-EPI sequence can simultaneously acquire 2 or 3 separate slices using interleaved readout sections with shortest TE ≈ 70 ms and ΔTE ≈ 30 ms. Phantom and in vivo experiments have shown that the proposed TDM-EPI sequences can provide similar image quality and diffusion measures as conventional EPI readouts with multiple echoes but can reduce the overall relaxation-diffusion protocol scan time by approximately two- to threefold.

CONCLUSION

TDM-EPI is a novel approach to acquire diffusion imaging data at multiple TEs. This enables a significant reduction in acquisition time for relaxation-diffusion MRI experiments but without compromising image quality and diffusion measurements, thus removing a significant barrier to the adoption of relaxation-diffusion MRI in clinical research studies of neurological and mental disorders.

Accelerated spin-echo functional MRI using multisection excitation by simultaneous spin-echo interleaving (MESSI) with complex-encoded generalized slice dithered enhanced resolution (cgSlider) simultaneous multislice echo-planar imaging

PURPOSE

Spin-echo functional MRI (SE-fMRI) has the potential to improve spatial specificity when compared with gradient-echo fMRI. However, high spatiotemporal resolution SE-fMRI with large slice-coverage is challenging as SE-fMRI requires a long echo time to generate blood oxygenation level-dependent (BOLD) contrast, leading to long repetition times. The aim of this work is to develop an acquisition method that enhances the slice-coverage of SE-fMRI at high spatiotemporal resolution.

THEORY AND METHODS

An acquisition scheme was developed entitled multisection excitation by simultaneous spin-echo interleaving (MESSI) with complex-encoded generalized slice dithered enhanced resolution (cgSlider). MESSI uses the dead-time during the long echo time by interleaving the excitation and readout of 2 slices to enable 2× slice-acceleration, while cgSlider uses the stable temporal background phase in SE-fMRI to encode/decode 2 adjacent slices simultaneously with a "phase-constrained" reconstruction method. The proposed cgSlider-MESSI was also combined with simultaneous multislice (SMS) to achieve further slice-acceleration. This combined approach was used to achieve 1.5-mm isotropic whole-brain SE-fMRI with a temporal resolution of 1.5 s and was evaluated using sensory stimulation and breath-hold tasks at 3T.

RESULTS

Compared with conventional SE-SMS, cgSlider-MESSI-SMS provides 4-fold increase in slice-coverage for the same repetition time, with comparable temporal signal-to-noise ratio. Corresponding fMRI activation from cgSlider-MESSI-SMS for both fMRI tasks were consistent with those from conventional SE-SMS. Overall, cgSlider-MESSI-SMS achieved a 32× encoding-acceleration by combining Rinplane × MB × cgSlider × MESSI = 4 × 2 × 2 × 2.

CONCLUSION

High-quality, high-resolution whole-brain SE-fMRI was acquired at a short repetition time using cgSlider-MESSI-SMS. This method should be beneficial for high spatiotemporal resolution SE-fMRI studies requiring whole-brain coverage.

Evaluation of 2D multiband EPI imaging for high-resolution, whole-brain, task-based fMRI studies at 3T: Sensitivity and slice leakage artifacts

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies that require high-resolution whole-brain coverage have long scan times that are primarily driven by the large number of thin slices acquired. Two-dimensional multiband echo-planar imaging (EPI) sequences accelerate the data acquisition along the slice direction and therefore represent an attractive approach to such studies by improving the temporal resolution without sacrificing spatial resolution. In this work, a 2D multiband EPI sequence was optimized for 1.5 mm isotropic whole-brain acquisitions at 3 T with 10 healthy volunteers imaged while performing simultaneous visual and motor tasks. The performance of the sequence was evaluated in terms of BOLD sensitivity and false-positive activation at multiband (MB) factors of 1, 2, 4, and 6, combined with in-plane GRAPPA acceleration of 2 × (GRAPPA 2), and the two reconstruction approaches of Slice-GRAPPA and Split Slice-GRAPPA. Sensitivity results demonstrate significant gains in temporal signal-to-noise ratio (tSNR) and t-score statistics for MB 2, 4, and 6 compared to MB 1. The MB factor for optimal sensitivity varied depending on anatomical location and reconstruction method. When using Slice-GRAPPA reconstruction, evidence of false-positive activation due to signal leakage between simultaneously excited slices was seen in one instance, 35 instances, and 70 instances over the ten volunteers for the respective accelerations of MB 2 × GRAPPA 2, MB 4 × GRAPPA 2, and MB 6 × GRAPPA 2. The use of Split Slice-GRAPPA reconstruction suppressed the prevalence of false positives significantly, to 1 instance, 5 instances, and 5 instances for the same respective acceleration factors. Imaging protocols using an acceleration factor of MB 2 × GRAPPA 2 can be confidently used for high-resolution whole-brain imaging to improve BOLD sensitivity with very low probability for false-positive activation due to slice leakage. Imaging protocols using higher acceleration factors (MB 3 or MB 4 × GRAPPA 2) can likely provide even greater gains in sensitivity but should be carefully optimized to minimize the possibility of false activations.

Simultaneous echo refocusing in EPI

A method to encode multiple two-dimensional Fourier transform (2D FT) images within a single echo train is presented. This new method, simultaneous echo refocusing (SER), is a departure from prior echo planar image (EPI) sequences which use repeated single-shot echo trains for multislice imaging. SER simultaneously acquires multiple slices in a single-shot echo train utilizing a shared refocusing process. The SER technique acquires data faster than conventional multislice EPI since it uses fewer gradient switchings and fewer preparation pulses such as diffusion gradients. SER introduces a new capability to simultaneously record multiple spatially separated sources of physiologic information in subsecond image acquisitions, which enables several applications that are dependent on temporal coherence in MRI data including velocity vector field mapping and brain activation mapping.

High-speed interlaced spin-echo magnetic resonance imaging

A new method is introduced for increasing the efficiency in multislice single spin-echo MRI. The method interlaces the excitation and measurement of different slices, resulting in an effective use of the echo delay time between RF excitation and reception. Under certain conditions, the method allows for scan time reduction compared to standard single spin-echo MRI, in particular for long echo times. The technique is demonstrated in examples of brain scans, indicating that a substantial increase is scan speed can be achieved without loss in image signal-to-noise ratio or contrast. Multislice interleaved excitation cycles (MUSIC): an efficient gradient-echo technique for functional MRI

A method providing improved slice efficiency for gradient-echo imaging requiring long echo times, such as in functional neuromagnetic resonance imaging, is presented. To enhance the volume coverage while maintaining the short imaging time of a conventional single-slice gradient-echo technique, an interleaved multislice excitation is performed during the echo time. This technique allows detection of susceptibility changes, e.g., the acquisition of stimulated human cortical activation maps, on clinical MR instruments at multiple planes within total imaging times of a few seconds. The efficiency of the technique is demonstrated in the detection of temporary changes in T2* in functional MRI experiments of the human visual cortex at magnetic field strengths of 2 Tesla and 3 Tesla. Fourteen 128 x 128 slices can be acquired in 13 s to cover a large volume-of-interest in the same time that would be required for single-slice acquisition using the conventional technique.

Rotating frame RF current density imaging

RF current density imaging (RF-CDI) is a new MRI technique for imaging the Larmor frequency current density parallel to B0 in electrolytic media. To extend the use of RF-CDI to biological tissue for generating conductivity contrast, the sensitivity must be increased and the data requirements reduced. A rotating frame approach, in which a large B1 field is applied simultaneously as a rotary echo with RF current, is proposed to meet these requirements. Rotating frame magnetic fields are encoded in the phase of an MRI image. Trials have now been performed with this sequence in a three-compartment cylindrical phantom containing doped water or mineral oil for detecting displacement, conduction and fringe field currents. In a postmortem rat study, 85.56 MHz RF currents injected by implanted electrodes created tissue dependent contrast because of the electrical properties of tissue. A sensitivity and artifact analysis was also performed. The sensitivity of this method is determined by the maximum RF pulse duration. SAR limits pose an upper bound on this time and B1, whereas the avoidance of phase artifacts imposes a lower bound on B1.
