Abstract
BACKGROUND Calyxes of Hibiscus sabdariffa (Hs) contain anthocyanins, that normalize blood glucose levels (BGL) in diabetic patients. Diabetes also causes memory alterations, which could hypothetically decrease with the consumption of Hs. OBJECTIVES To investigate the effect of dietary supplementation with a Hs extract on working memory and BGL in rats. METHODS Diabetic hyperglycemia (DHG) was induced with streptozotocin (STZ, 55 mg/kg i.p.) in Wistar rats. After 72 h DHG was confirmed, and the consumption of Hs extract began (50 mg/Kg/day). BGL and body weight (BW) were measured at 10, 20 and 30 days after DHG induction in controls and treated animals. Learning and short-term memory were evaluated after 30 days with Novel Object Recognition Test (NOR) and Barnes Maze (BM). The gross hippocampal structure was histologically analyzed. RESULTS STZ-treated animals presented low BW and persistent DHG (BGL <300 mg/dL). Diabetic animals consuming the Hs extract had a dual response: some showed BGL comparable to controls, while others had levels comparable to diabetic animals not consuming extract. Diabetic animals that consumed the Hs extract had a better performance in NOR and BM than the diabetic animals not consuming the extract. At the histological level, hippocampal morphological differences were observed between diabetic animals that consumed the extract and those that did not. DISCUSSION The Hs extract used here could be a good co-adjuvant in the treatment of DHG, aimed at mitigating memory deficits and high BGL. These beneficial effects could be attributed to the anthocyanin content in the extract.

Abstract
This study proposed Hibiscus sabdariffa as a novel substrate for BC production with Komagataeibacter species and their consortia. K. intermedius is found as the most efficient producer (5.98 g/L BC, 3.56 × 10-2 g-1 h-1 productivity rate) following K. maltaceti (4.44 g/L BC, 2.64 × 10-2 g-1 h-1 productivity rate) and K. nataicola (3.67 g/L BC, 2.18 × 10-2 g-1 h-1 productivity rate). Whereas agitation increased BC production with K. nataicola (1.22-fold, 4.49 g/L BC), K. maltaceti (1.24-fold, 5.52 g/L BC) and K. intermedius (1.27-fold, 7.63 g/L BC), irregular shaped BC was obtained. This could be a novel result as Komagataeibacter consortia increased BC production by 1.17-2.01-fold compared to monocultures resulting as 8.11 g/L BC through the co-cultivation of K. maltaceti-K. intermedius. Maximum increase was found to be 1.75-fold (1.79-fold WHC), occurring with monoculture of K. maltaceti, while 1.94-fold (1.26-fold WHC) with K. maltaceti-K. intermedius consortium when H. sabdariffa-based media compared Hestrin-Schramm media. Based on these results, this could be a novel result as H. sabdariffa-based media may replace the use of HS media in BC production by means of a bioactive content-rich plant and obtaining 3-D ultrafine porous structure with high thermal resistant (∼460-500 °C) BC with mono and co-cultivation of Komagataeibacter species to be used in industrial area.

Abstract
The potential of plant-based diets and drugs to prevent and control obesity has been attributed to the presence of several biologically active phytochemicals. The study aimed to assess herb consumption's impact on alleviating the risks and hazards associated with obesity induced by a high-fat diet (HFD) and the promotion of fertility. Eighty rats were allocated into four distinct groups. Group 1 (G1) was provided with a basal diet and acted as the control group. Group 2 (G2) was provided with an HFD. Group 3 (G3) was provided with HFD supplemented with chia seeds and Hibiscus sabdariffa L. The fourth group of subjects was provided with HFD supplemented with Foeniculum vulgare (fennel) and Coriandrum sativum L. (coriander). The feeding session was sustained for 10 weeks, and the biochemical parameters were evaluated. The administration of Foeniculum vulgare (fennel) and Coriandrum sativum L. (coriander) (G4) resulted in a more significant reduction in all biochemical parameters compared to G3, which received a diet consisting of chia seeds and Hibiscus sabdariffa L. Additionally, the average number of embryonic lobes and the average number of offspring after birth were found to be considerably more significant in the normal control group (G1) and group (G4) compared to the HFD group (G2) and group (G3) (P < 0.01). Group 4 (G4) was administered a diet enriched with Foeniculum vulgare (fennel) and Coriandrum sativum L. (coriander), which demonstrated superior outcomes in many biochemical indicators and the promotion of fertility in obese female rats.

Abstract
The utilization of food as a therapeutic measure for various ailments has been a prevalent practice throughout history and across different cultures. This is exemplified in societies where substances like Hibiscus sabdariffa have been employed to manage health conditions like hypertension and elevated blood glucose levels. The inherent bioactive compounds found in this plant, namely, delphinidin-3-sambubioside (DS3), quercetin (QRC), and hibiscus acid (HA), have been linked to various health benefits. Despite receiving individual attention, the specific molecular targets for these compounds remain unclear. In this study, computational analysis was conducted using bioinformatics tools such as Swiss Target Prediction, ShinnyGo 0.77, KEGG, and Stringdb to identify the molecular targets, pathways, and hub genes. Supplementary results were obtained through a thorough literature search in PubMed. DS3 analysis revealed potential genetic alterations related to the metabolism of nitrogen and glucose, inflammation, angiogenesis, and cell proliferation, particularly impacting the PI3K-AKT signaling pathway. QRC analysis demonstrated interconnected targets spanning multiple pathways, with some overlap with DS3 analysis and a particular focus on pathways related to cancer. HA analysis revealed distinct targets, especially those associated with pathways related to the nervous system. These findings emphasize the necessity for focused research on the molecular effects of DS3, QRC, and HA, thereby providing valuable insights into potential therapeutic pathways.

Abstract
Hibiscus sabdariffa has gained increasing attention from consumers as a natural, healthy food ingredient, leading to a myriad of available products, yet there is a lack of understanding of the quality and chemical diversity among commercially available hibiscus products. Here, we conducted a survey on the chemistry of 29 hibiscus products (calyces, beverages, and extracts). UHPLC-DAD and UHPLC-QQQ/MS methods with high sensitivity and selectivity were developed to evaluate the chemical profiles pertaining to the sensory attributes (color and taste). Two major anthocyanins (delphinidin-3-sambubioside and cyanindin-3-sambubioside), eight organic acids, and 23 phenolic acids were identified and quantified in hibiscus market products. The results showed that hibiscus samples contained < 0.001-2.372% of total anthocyanins, 0.073-78.002% of total organic acids, and 0.001-1.041% of total phenolic acids, and demonstrated significant variations in market products. This is the first time that an in-depth organic acid profiling was conducted on hibiscus products using UHPLC-QQQ/MS. This method can also be extended to chemical profiling, sensory analysis, quality control, authentication, and standardization of other natural products.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Leptin is predominant in regulating body weight by stimulating energy expenditure through its neuronal action in the brain. Moreover, it is projected to adipose tissue and induces adipocyte browning by activating the β3-adrenergic receptor (β3AR). However, the expression of leptin receptor (Lep-R) and β3AR in people with obesity is downregulated. AIM We hypothesized that Hibiscus sabdariffa Linn. extract (HSE) would increase hypothalamus arcuate nucleus (ARC) Lep-R and white adipose tissue (WAT) β3AR mRNA expression in DIO rats. This study also analyzed the potency of H. sabdariffa bioactive compounds as activators of Lep-R and β3AR by an in-silico experiment. METHODS Twenty-four male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into four groups: Control (standard food), DIO (high-fat diet), DIO-Hib200 (HFD+HSE 200 mg/kg BW), and DIO-Hib400 (HFD+HSE400 mg/kg BW). HSE was administered orally for five weeks, once a day. RESULTS HSE administration significantly (p <0,05) increased the ARC Lep-R expression. The Lee index significantly decreased to the normal range (≤ 310) with p <0,001 for DIO-Hib200 and p <0,01 for DIO-Hib400. Among 39 bioactive compounds, 5-O-caffeoyl shikimic acid exhibited high free binding scores (-8,63) for Lep-R, and myricetin_3_arabinogalactoside had high free binding scores (-9,39) for β3AR. These binding predictions could activate Lep-R and β3AR. CONCLUSION This study highlights that HSE could be a potential therapeutic target for obesity by increasing LepR mRNA and leptin sensitivity, enhancing energy expenditure, and reducing obesity.

Abstract
Roselle is rich in an extensive diversity of beneficial substances, including phenolic acids, amino acids, anthocyanins, vitamins, and flavonoids. Herein, the chemical constituents in Roselle extract (RE) were identified by UPLC-DAD-QTOF-MS. Besides, its inhibitory effects on three digestive enzymes, i.e. α-amylase, α-glucosidase, and pancreatic lipase, were investigated in both in vitro and in vivo. Thirty-three constituents including hibiscus acid, 18 phenolic acids, 2 anthocyanins and 12 flavonoids were identified. The anthocyanins content in RE was 21.44 ± 0.68 %, while the contents of chlorogenic acids, rutin and quercetin were 17.76 ± 2.28 %, 0.31 ± 0.01 % and 0.32 ± 0.01 %, respectively. RE inhibited pancreatic lipase in a non-competitive way with an IC50 value of 0.84 mg/mL. Besides, it demonstrated a mixed-type inhibition on both α-glucosidase and α-amylase with IC50 values of 0.59 mg/mL and 1.93 mg/mL, respectively. Fluorescence quenching assays confirmed the binding of RE to the enzyme proteins. Furthermore, rats pre-treated with RE at doses of 50 and 100 mg/kg body weight (bwt) exhibited significant reductions in fat absorption and improvements in fat excretion through feces. Additionally, the in vivo study revealed that RE was effective in suppressing the increase of blood glucose after starch consumption, while its effects on maltose and sucrose consumption were relatively weak.

Abstract
The absorption and metabolism of bioactive compounds (BCs) in a Hibiscus sabdariffa drink (HbD) were evaluated by the in vivo bioavailability of organic acids (OA) and phenolic compounds (PC's). An acute single-blind clinical study in humans was conducted. Twelve volunteers consumed a HbD and a control drink (CD). Urine and plasma samples were taken after consuming both beverages. OA and PC's of the beverages (HbD and CD) and the biological samples (urine and plasma) were characterized by HPLC-DAD-MS. Thirthy-eight compounds in HbD and four CD were detected and quantified, equivalent to 937.37 mg and 1.22 mg per 60 mL, respectively. Hibiscus acid was the most abundant OA in both drinks. Additionally, hydroxycinnamic acids, flavonoids, anthocyanins, and anthocyanidins were also detected in HbD, although their amount represented 10% of the total BCs. 25 different metabolites were identified, 15 in urine and 23 in plasma. The microbiota extensively biotransformed PCs and their amount was lower than organic acids, particularly hibiscus acid and hydroxycitric acid. The colonic metabolites derived from PCs and organic acids would be behind the anti-inflammatory bioactivity described for Hibiscus sabdariffa L. (Malvaceae family). However, further studies are necessary to evaluate the metabolites responsible for their anti-inflammatory activity.

Abstract
The calyxes of Hibiscus sabdariffa present multiple pharmacological effects primarily attributed to their high anthocyanin content; however, little is known about their phytoestrogenic effect. Ovarian hypofunction (OH) is a process characterized by the rapid detention of the production of ovarian hormones, which compromises reproductive and cognitive functions. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) efficiently compensates for OH; nevertheless, questions have been raised on its secondary effects and safety. One of the alternatives to tackling OH involves using phytoestrogens such as anthocyanins for their structural similarity to natural estrogens. In a Wistar rat model of ovariectomy (OVX), we recently reported the beneficial properties of an anthocyanin-rich extract prepared from the calyces of H. sabdariffa (HSE) in hindering the adverse effects of OH on memory performance and highlighted a possible phytoestrogenic impact through the modulation of estrogen receptor (ER) expression. We now report that HSE and estradiol differentially affected the expression of ERα and ERβ. ERα was more sensitive to HSE; meanwhile, estradiol preferentially modulated ERβ. Thus, our study leads to further research on using H. sabdariffa as a nutrition-based alternative to HRT.

Abstract
Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a serious chronic metabolic disease that is associated with hyperglycemia and several complications including cardiovascular disease and chronic kidney disease. DM is caused by high levels of blood sugar in the body associated with the disruption of insulin metabolism and homeostasis. Over time, DM can induce life-threatening health problems such as blindness, heart disease, kidney damage, and stroke. Although the cure of DM has improved over the past decades, its morbidity and mortality rates remain high. Hence, new therapeutic strategies are needed to overcome the burden of this disease. One such prevention and treatment strategy that is easily accessible to diabetic patients at low cost is the use of medicinal plants, vitamins, and essential elements. The research objective of this review article is to study DM and explore its treatment modalities based on medicinal plants and vitamins. To achieve our objective, we searched scientific databases of ongoing trials in PubMed Central, Medline databases, and Google Scholar websites. We also searched databases on World Health Organization International Clinical Trials Registry Platform to collect relevant papers. Results of numerous scientific investigations revealed that phytochemicals present in medicinal plants (Allium sativum, Momordica charantia, Hibiscus sabdariffa L., and Zingiber officinale) possess anti-hypoglycemic activities and show promise for the prevention and/or control of DM. Results also revealed that intake of vitamins C, D, E, or their combination improves the health of diabetes patients by reducing blood glucose, inflammation, lipid peroxidation, and blood pressure levels. However, very limited studies have addressed the health benefits of medicinal plants and vitamins as chemo-therapeutic/preventive agents for the management of DM. This review paper aims at addressing this knowledge gap by studying DM and highlighting the biomedical significance of the most potent medicinal plants and vitamins with hypoglycemic properties that show a great potential to prevent and/or treat DM.

Abstract
ABSTRACT Introduction Hibiscus sabdariffa (Hs) has been widely used for weight loss and in the fight against obesity-associated comorbidities. Objective To evaluate the effects of Hs and physical training on the functional capacity of normal-weight and obese rats. Methods Wistar rats were distributed into eight experimental groups: control (C, n = 8) , Hibiscus Sabdariffa (Hs, n = 8), high-intensity interval training (IT, n = 8), high-intensity interval training + Hibiscus Sabdariffa (ITHs, n = 8), obese (O, n = 8), obese + continuous aerobic training (OAT, n = 8), obese + Hibiscus Sabdariffa (OHs, n = 8), , and obese + continuous aerobic training + Hibiscus Sabdariffa (OATHs, n = 8). Hibiscus Sabdariffa extract was administered for 60 days in a dose of 150 mg/kg of body weight. The maximum progressive effort test (MPET) was performed on a treadmill at the beginning and end of the study. The variables analyzed were maximum speed Vmáx time, and distance covered. Lactate was measured immediately after the MPET. Functional capacity was evaluated by the distance/adiposity index. The ANOVA with Bonferroni post hoc and Pearson’s correlation tests were used at a 5% significance level. Results After both types of training, moderate-intensity continuous and high-intensity interval performed on the treadmill, final body weight, weight gain, and the adiposity index decreased, and Vmax, time, and distance covered in the MPET increased, in addition to an improvement in functional capacity. Hs supplementation reduced the adiposity index in normal-weight and obese rats. Hs associated with aerobic training reduced final body weight and increased functional capacity. Conclusion Hs supplementation promoted a reduction in the adiposity index in normal-weight and obese rats and an increase in the functional capacity of trained obese rats. Abstract
Roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa) is rich in phenolic compounds with antiobesogenic and antidiabetic effects. In this study, the effects of aqueous extracts of two varieties of Hibiscus sabdariffa, Alma blanca (white-yellow color) and Cuarenteña (purple color), were evaluated for the prevention of obesity and insulin resistance in rats fed a high-fat and high-fructose diet (HFFD), identifying targeted molecules through global metabolomics. After sixteen weeks, both roselle aqueous extracts prevented body weight gain, and white roselle extract ameliorated insulin resistance and decreased serum free fatty acid levels. Moreover, white roselle extract decreased 18:0 and 20:4 lysophosphatidylethanolamines and purple roselle extract increased 16:0 and 20:4 lysophosphatidylinositol compared to HFFD-fed rats. These results demonstrate that roselle's beneficial health effects are variety-dependent. Interestingly, the white roselle extract showed a greater beneficial effect, probably due to its high contents of organic and phenolic acids, though its consumption is not as popular as that of the red/purple varieties.

Abstract
Grape pomace (GP) is a source of polyphenols which may be present as free structures or associated with dietary fiber. Instant controlled pressure drop (DIC) is a technology which can modify the association of polyphenols with food matrixes, but how these modifications affect the health benefits associated with GP remains to be elucidated. In this study, in rats fed a high-fat-fructose diet (HFF), we evaluated the in vivo cardiometabolic effects of the modification of polyphenols in GP caused by DIC at 0.2 MPa for 60 s (DIC1) and 0.4 MPa for 120 s (DIC2). These treatments increased anthocyanin and total flavonoid contents, respectively, while all the supplementations caused significant improvements in insulin resistance and plasma triacylglycerols. Thus, the bioactive compounds present in GP (including a major fraction of non-extractable proanthocyanidins) caused these modifications independently of the specific polyphenol profiles which may have resulted from these DIC treatments. Additionally, only intact GP led to an increase in HDL cholesterol, while only DIC2-treated GP improved hepatic steatosis. In conclusion, GP always improves insulin sensitivity in this animal model of obesity, while the different compositions of GP modified by DIC may be associated with other cardiometabolic parameters.

Abstract
Anthocyanins are known to change ligand-receptor bindings, cell membrane permeability, and intracellular signaling pathways. The beneficial effects of dietary anthocyanins have been chronologically demonstrated in interventional and observational studies, including fourteen human chondrocyte studies and related cell culture assays, nineteen human clinical trials in osteoarthritis patients, seven in vivo obesity assays, nineteen in vitro assays in preadipocytes and related cells, and twenty-two clinical trials in overweight/obese subjects, which are critically discussed in this update. Strawberries, cherries, berries, pomegranate, tropical fruits, rosehip, purple rice, purple corn, red beans, and black soybean, together with cyanidin, delphinidin, malvidin, peonidin, some 3-O-glycosides, metabolites, and acylated anthocyanins from a potato cultivar have shown the best outcomes. The set of these five key tests and clinical trials, taken together, contributes to the understanding of the underlying mechanisms and pathways involved. Furthermore, this set shows the value of anthocyanins in counteracting the progression of osteoarthritis/obesity. The interplay between the inflammation of osteoarthritis and obesity, and the subsequent regulation/immunomodulation was performed through isolated and food anthocyanins. The antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory properties of anthocyanins explain the findings of the studies analyzed. However, further interventional studies should be conducted to finally establish the appropriate doses for anthocyanin supplementation, dose-response, and length of consumption, to include dietary recommendations for osteoarthritis/obese patients for preventive and management purposes.

Abstract
The consumption of cricket (Acheta domesticus, AD) has recently increased due to its high nutritional and bioactive compound contents. However, limited studies have explored the beneficial effects of AD consumption. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the protective effect of a diet supplemented with AD flour on obesity control and its complications in an in vivo model. The chemical profiling of the AD showed an important protein content, chitin, and polyunsaturated fatty acids contents. For the in vivo study, a high-fructose and saturated fat diet (HFFD) was supplemented with AD (4% and 8%). The 8% AD supplementation reduced body weight gain (19%) and serum triglycerides (37%) in HFFD-fed rats. These benefits were related to a greater lipid excretion in feces (97%) and the partial inhibition of pancreatic lipase in vitro by the aqueous extract and the hydrolyzed proteins obtained from AD. Additionally, the 8% AD supplementation improved insulin resistance measured by the HOMA index (61%). Thus, 8% AD supplementation to HFFD-fed rats was effective in preventing obesity, dyslipidemia, and insulin resistance. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: Obesity is a risk factor for developing insulin resistance and dyslipidemia. Therefore, there is an increasing interest in consuming foods rich in bioactive compounds as therapeutic alternatives for managing the development of obesity and its complications. Edible insects, such as crickets, are attractive for treating obesity due to their content of protein, fiber, and polyunsaturated fatty acids. Studies have explored the effect of glycosaminoglycan (GAG)-enriched extracts from the cricket Gryllus bimaculatus against obesity. However, GAG content in crickets is low, and crickets are commonly consumed whole instead of extracts. The cricket Acheta domesticus (AD) is among the most rearing cricket species as it is easy to farm and has a better flavor. However, limited studies have explored the beneficial effects of AD consumption. This study demonstrates that AD prevents obesity and ameliorates dyslipidemia and insulin resistance. Therefore, AD is a valuable entomotherapeutic strategy to reduce the comorbidities associated with diet-induced obesity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Obesity is a cause of FGF21 resistance, which affects the browning and thermogenesis process of the adipose tissue. Decreased receptor expression is influenced by miR-34a, whose expression is increased in obesity. While FGF21-based therapies have been widely investigated, the potential activity of Hibiscus sabdariffa Linn. extract (HSE) against FGF21 resistance is unknown. OBJECTIVE This study aims to determine the effects of HSE on the expression of miR-34a and FGF21 receptors in white adipose tissue. METHODS This experimental study used 24 male Sprague-Dawley rats and divided into four groups: Control (N); diet-induced-obesity rats (DIO); DIO rats with HSE 200 mg/kgBW/day and DIO rats with HSE 400 mg/kgBW/day. Rats were fed a high-fat diet for 17 weeks. HSE was administered daily for 5 weeks. The administration of HSE 400 mg/kgBW/day resulted in the equivalent expression of miR-34a to that of the control (p > 0.05). RESULTS FGFR1 receptor expression was also similar to controls (p > 0.05). Beta-klotho expression was significantly lower than that of control (p < 0.05) but equivalent to that of DIO rats (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS H. sabdariffa has the potential to reduce FGF21 resistance in DIO rats through the suppression of miR-34a expression and an increase in the number of FGFR1 and beta-klotho receptors in adipose tissue.

Abstract
Hypercaloric beverages increase the prevalence of insulin resistance and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), diets with polyphenolic compounds improved these alterations. The study aimed to evaluate the effect of the consumption of three functional beverages (prepared with: Roselle, green tea, cinnamon, Malabar tamarind, and peppermint in different proportions) on insulin resistance and NAFLD and their relation to liver phospholipid regulation in Wistar rats fed with a high-fat and fructose (HFF) diet. The consumption of beverages showed lower liver triglycerides compared to HFF control group, being the called beverage B the successful triggering up to 30.1%. The consumption of functional beverages improved insulin resistance and decreased the abundance of LysoPC (20:2), LysoPC (16:0), LysoPC (14:0), LysoPE (18:0), LysoPC (15:0), and LysoPC (20:1), with beverage C being the one with the meaningful effect. The results indicate that the functional beverage consumption improves insulin resistance, and decrease the degree of NAFLD, these through modifications of lysophosphatidylcholines, and lipids metabolism.

Abstract
BACKGROUND One of the main disadvantages of red pigments used in foods is their low extraction yield and storage stability. Roselle flowers are sources of anthocyanins; however, these are unstable during storage, but this could be improved with phenolic compounds, which establish bonds with the anthocyanins. The aim of this work was to identify conditions to improve the extraction efficiency and color stability of Hibiscus sabdariffa extract and, furthermore, to identify the phenolic compounds associated with color stability of roselle. RESULTS The temperature of extraction (35 and 75 °C), the time of extraction (15 and 60 min), type of acid (acetic and citric), percentage of acid (0.5 and 2.0%) and the water:ethanol ratio (20:80 and 80:20) did not affect the yield of anthocyanins; only the solid:solvent ratio had an effect in the anthocyanin extraction yield. The extraction with 80% ethanol decreased up to 50% the anthocyanin degradation in the extracts stored at 4, 25, 35, 45, and 80 °C. Phenolic acids and flavonoids were quantified by ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography coupled with triple quadrupole electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. These compounds were analyzed using principal component analysis, and the H. sabdariffa extract, with greater stability, was found to be associated with the presence of quercetin, myricetin, kaempferol 3-O-glucose, ellagic acid, and rutin. CONCLUSION H. sabdariffa extract with increased color stability was extracted with a higher proportion of ethanol and the improvement in the color stability was attributed to the co-extraction of phenolic compounds, principally flavonoids that could interact with anthocyanins and stabilize them. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
Herbal and home remedies are widely used worldwide especially those for weight loss. The prevalence of overweight and obesity in Saudi Arabia has highly elevated during the past decades. People in Saudi Arabia preferred the usage of remedies more than standard medicine. Therefore, we conducted this study to assess the use of weight reduction herbal and home remedies in Tabuk, North West Saudi Arabia. Data about weight-loss herbal remedies were collected from major local herbalist shops. In addition, inherited weight-loss herbal and household remedies were collected. Data collected included composition, method of preparation, method of use, and any reported side effects. Some of these remedies were used either alone or in combination. Majority of these ingredients were boiled in water to be drunk or directly added to food. Most of these mixtures were taken before food to reduce appetite. Most of these herbs were recorded to produce side effects. Mainly people suffer from gastric symptoms and headache. Many natural herbal and home remedies are still in use in Tabuk for weight reduction. Many of these remedies lack important scientific evidence for their usage, effectiveness, or safety.

Abstract
Saskatoon berry (Amelanchier alnifolia) is a potential functional food containing anthocyanins and flavonols, as well as ellagitannins and phenolic acids. We have determined the potential therapeutic effects of Saskatoon berry in diet-induced metabolic syndrome. Nine- to ten-week-old male Wistar rats were randomly assigned to four groups. Two groups were fed on control diets, either corn starch (C) or high-carbohydrate, high-fat diet (H) respectively, for 16 weeks. Two further groups were fed on C or H diet for 16 weeks with Saskatoon berry powder added to the diet for the final 8 weeks (CSSK, HSSK). After 16 weeks, H rats showed symptoms of metabolic syndrome, including increased body weight, visceral adiposity, systolic blood pressure, cardiac fibrosis, plasma concentrations of triglycerides and non-esterified fatty acids, and plasma activities of alanine transaminase and aspartate transaminase. Saskatoon berry intervention normalised body weight and adiposity, improved glucose tolerance, decreased systolic blood pressure, improved heart and liver structure and function with decreased infiltration of inflammatory cells, and decreased plasma total cholesterol. Further, Saskatoon berry normalised liver expression of hexokinase 1 and glycogen phosphorylase and increased glucose 6-phosphatase relative to H rats. These results suggest that Saskatoon berry regulates glycolysis, gluconeogenesis and glycogenesis to improve metabolic syndrome.

Abstract
Different external factors influence the chemical characteristics of natural products, varying according to the geographic origin. The present study determined the nutritional and chemical composition of Hibiscus sabdariffa L. dried calyces (Guinea-Bissauan origin), as well as the phenolic composition, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, cytotoxicity and antimicrobial activity of its infusion and hydroethanolic extracts. Among the chemical components, glucose and quinic acid showed the major concentration for sugars and organic acids, respectively. Palmitic acid and α-tocopherol were the most abundant lipophilic compounds. The individual phenolic compounds were analysed through HPLC-DAD-ESI/MS. Thirteen compounds were identified in the hydroethanolic extract, while twelve were identified in the infusion, 3-O-caffeoylquinic acid being the major non-anthocyanin compound. Three anthocyanins were identified, delphinidin-3-O-sambubioside being the most abundant. Both extracts showed promising results in all the bioactive assays. This study exhibited the beneficial properties of H. sabdariffa and also emphasized the potential applications of this plant in different industrial sectors.

Abstract
PURPOSE Hibiscus sabdariffa L. is commonly used as an ingredient for herbal teas and food supplements. Several studies demonstrated the beneficial effects of Hibiscus sabdariffa L. extracts (HSE); however, the bioactive components and their mode of action still remain unclear. Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) was used to study health-related effects and the underlying molecular mechanisms of HSE in this model organism as well as effects of hydroxycitric acid (HCA), a main compound of HSE, and its structural analogue isocitric acid (ICA). METHODS Survival and locomotion were detected by touch-provoked movement. Thermotolerance was analysed using the nucleic acid stain SYTOX green, and intracellular ROS accumulation was measured via oxidation of H2DCF. Localisation of the transcription factors DAF-16 and SKN-1 was analysed in transgenic strains (DAF-16::GFP, SKN-1::GFP). The involvement of DAF-16 and SKN-1 was further investigated using loss-of-function strains as well as gene silencing by feeding RNAi-inducing bacteria. Protection against amyloid-β toxicity was analysed using a transgenic strain with an inducible expression of human amyloid-β peptides in body wall muscle cells (paralysis assay). RESULTS HSE treatment resulted in a prominent extension of lifespan (up to 24%) and a reduction of the age-dependent decline in locomotion. HCA, a main compound of HSE increased lifespan too, but to a lesser extent (6%) while ICA was not effective. HSE and HCA did not modulate resistance against thermal stress conditions and did not exert antioxidative effects: HSE rather increased intracellular ROS levels, suggesting a pro-oxidative effect of the extract in vivo. HSE and HCA increased the nuclear localisation of the pivotal transcription factors DAF-16 and SKN-1 indicating an activation of these factors. Consistent with this result, lifespan prolongation by HSE was dependent on both transcription factors. In addition to the positive effect on lifespan, HSE treatment also elicited a (strong) protection against amyloid-ß induced toxicity in C. elegans in a DAF-16- and SKN-1-dependent manner. CONCLUSION Our results demonstrate that HSE increases lifespan and protects against amyloid-β toxicity in the model organism C. elegans. These effects were mediated, at least in parts via modulation of pathways leading to activation/nuclear localisation of DAF-16 and SKN-1. Since HCA, a main component of HSE causes only minor effects, additional bioactive compounds like flavonoids or anthocyanins as well as synergistic effects of these compounds should be investigated.

Abstract
Obesity is a condition associated with the accumulation of excess fat in the body, energy imbalance, lipogenesis, etc., which increases adipose tissue mass through adipogenesis and poses a health risk. Its prevalence has become an economic burden to the health care system and the world at large. One of the alternatives to tackling obesity involves the use of bioactive compounds. We critically examined the effects of Hibiscus sabdariffa extract (HSE) on various parameters associated with the development of obesity such as; the effect of HSE on body weight, the effect of HSE on lipid accumulation, cholesterol metabolism and plasma parameters, the inhibitory effect of HSE on pancreatic lipase, and the effect of HSE on adipocyte differentiation/adipogenesis. This review has gathered reports on the various anti-obesity effects of H. sabdariffa bioactive compounds in cell and animal models, as well as in humans. Available toxicology information on the consumption of H. sabdariffa revealed that its toxicity is dose-dependent and may cause an adverse effect when administered over a long period of time. Reports have shown that H. sabdariffa derived bioactive compounds are potent in the treatment of obesity with an evident reduction in body weight, inhibition of lipid accumulation and suppression of adipogenesis through the PPARγ pathway and other transcriptional factors.
