Abstract
In this paper, the extraction of chlorophenols from water samples was carried out using high surface area boehmite nanoparticles as a sorbent. The surfactant-free process employed to make the nano-boehmite used in this work was simple, green, and efficient. The proposed approach was based on headspace solid-phase microextraction, followed by GC-ECD for the determination of analytes. In situ derivatization of analytes was performed with acetic anhydride in a basic medium. Various effective parameters, including the amount of derivatization reagent, ionic strength, desorption temperature and time, extraction temperature, equilibrium time, and extraction time were studied. Under optimal conditions, the linear dynamic range was 0.05-5.0 μg L-1 for 2,4-dichlorophenol and 2,6-dichlorophenol and 0.003-0.1 μg L-1 for 2,4,6-trichlorophenol. A low limit of detection (0.75 × 10-3-15 × 10-3 μg L-1), and relative standard deviations for real samples (RSDs) <10% were obtained. The precision (as intra- and inter-day RSDs) was between 1.2 and 9.8%. In comparison to commercial fibers (CAR-PDMS, 85 μm), this fiber showed a greater extraction efficiency. Various water samples were subjected to extraction by the proposed method. The recoveries ranged from 90 to 110%.

Abstract
A magnetic needle headspace single-drop microextraction (MN-HS-SDME) method coupled to HPLC/UV has been developed. Trihexyl(tetradecyl)phosphonium chloride was employed as an ionic liquid (IL) solvent for the headspace extraction of some chlorophenol (CP) compounds from wastewater samples. Despite of the nonmagnetic character of the IL, a significant improvement in the extraction efficiency was obtained by the magnetization of the single-drop microextraction needle using a pair of permanent disk magnets. A simplex method for the fast optimization of the experimental conditions (e.g., stirring speed, ionic strength, pH, extraction time and temperature) was used. The coefficients of determination (R2) varied between 0.9932 and 0.9989, the limits of detection were from 0.004 to 0.007 μg mL-1 and the relative recoveries were in the range of 88-120% for the studied analytes. The developed MN-HS-SDME HPLC/UV method was successfully applied to the determination of CPs in industrial wastewater.

Abstract
In this project, a three-dimensional graphene oxide coated agarose/chitosan (ACGO) porous film was synthesized and utilized as sorbent in thin film microextraction (TFME) technique to extract 4-chlorophenol, 2,4-dichlorophenol, 3,5-dichlorophenol and 2,4,6-trichlorophenol as the model analytes in various real samples such as agricultural waste water, honey and tea samples. In addition, deep eutectic solvent made of tetra ethyl ammonium chloride/chlorine chloride was used as a desorption solvent. The effect of various variables, such as: extraction time, stirring rate, solvent desorption volume, desorption time, ionic strength and solution pH on the extraction efficiency of the method was studied and optimized. Under the optimized condition, the linear range of the method was obtained in the range of 0.1-500μgL-1 for testing analytes (4-chloropheol=0.1-500μgL-1, 2,4-dichlorophenol=0.2-500μgL-1, 3,5-dichlorophenol=0.5-500μgL-1 and 2,4,6-trichlorophenol=0.2-500μgL-1). The obtained correlation coefficients (r2) were between 0.9984 and 0.9994. The limits of detection (LODs) were also calculated between 0.03 - 0.13μgL-1. The relative standard deviations (RSDs%) were obtained in the range of 2.8 to 5.9%. The enrichment factor (EFs) values for the studied analytes were also obtained in the range of 33.4-35.8. In addition, the obtained results indicated that the prepared film can potentially be used for more applications in the field of environment, food safety, and drug analysis.

Abstract
In toxicological analysis, the analytical validation method is important to assess the exact risk of contaminants of emerging concern in the environment. Syringe filters are mainly used to remove impurities from sample solutions. However, the loss of analyte to the syringe filter could be considerable, causing an underestimate of the analyte concentrations. The current study develops and validates simultaneous liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis using a direct filtration method to detect four groups of contaminants of emerging concern. The adsorption of the analyte onto three different matrices and six types of syringe filters is reported. The lowest adsorption of analytes was observed in methanol (16.72%), followed by deionized water (48.19%) and filtered surface lake water (48.94%). Irrespective of the type of the matrices, the lowest average adsorption by the syringe filter was observed in the 0.45 μm polypropylene membrane (15.15%), followed by the 0.20 μm polypropylene membrane (16.10%), the 0.20 μm regenerated cellulose (16.15%), the 0.20 μm polytetrafluoroethylene membrane (47.38%), the 0.45 μm nylon membrane (64.87%) and the 0.20 μm nylon membrane (71.30%). In conclusion, the recommended syringe filter membranes for contaminants of emerging concern analysis are polypropylene membranes and regenerated cellulose, regardless of the matrix used.

Abstract
2-Methylimidazole (MIM) is a classic organic ligand that shows excellent thermal stability and chemical robustness and is widely used in ZIFs. Recently, transformations of MOFs have been realized by using metals or ligands. In this study, we propose a new strategy-adjusting MIM by extending the alkyl chain length -to change the properties of related MOFs. Furthermore, we used copper as the metal core to replace zinc to mimic the active sites of laccases (electron transfer between copper and imidazole ring). As a result, the nanostructures transformed from nanoleaves to nanovesicles, which changed the Cu(II)/Cu(I) ratio from 3.7 to 1.7, as well as the lattice constant (decreased the diffraction angle) and enzyme-like activity (inhibition). In addition, we revealed that superoxidase anions were the main factors responsible for its laccase-like activity. We applied it to detect and discriminate phenolics. Laccase-mimicking activity was best at pH 7.0. When compared to protein laccase, the Cu-MeIm nanozyme had a greater Vmax at the same mass concentration. It was used to identify and distinguish phenolics. In the presence of Cu-MeIm nanozymes, the linear range is 0.1-2 mM and the detection limit of 2,4-DCP is 0.034 mM.

Abstract
Phenol and its derivatives, known as persistent organic pollutants, have long threatened human health and environmental safety. There is an urgent need to develop convenient, low-cost, and multiplex analytical methods. Since phenols are substrates of laccase, they can be detected via laccase-catalyzed colorimetric assays. Nevertheless, the laccase-based assays cannot distinguish different phenols. Moreover, natural laccases suffer from high cost and low stability issues. To meet these needs, here we developed a laccase-like nanozyme sensor array for phenol detection and differentiation, which takes advantage of both nanozymes and cross-reactive sensor arrays. First, we examined a series of spinel-type transition metal oxides and found that manganese on octahedral sites profoundly affects the laccase-like activity of the materials. Based on the developed manganese-based spinel oxides (i.e., Mn3O4, Zn0.4Li0.6Mn2O4, and LiMn2O4), a colorimetric sensor array was constructed. The sensor array could effectively identify and discriminate phenol and its derivatives and showed good performance in the identification and differentiation of phenols in tap water samples. This work provides an important guidance for the development of laccase-like nanozymes and a promising methodology for pollutant monitoring.

Abstract
In this work, hierarchical ZIF-8 coated anodized aluminum foil was prepared through in situ template-directed method without addition of any zinc salt. The hierarchical sorbent was synthesized by the formation of the final HZIF-8 on the previously created layered double oxide (LDO) template. The LDO template was created by calcining the firstly in situ prepared desired layered double hydroxide (LDH) precursor coated on the electrochemically anodized porous Al foil in an air atmosphere. The microextraction ability of the extracting device was studied through direct immersion thin film microextraction (DI-TFME). The extracted analytes were quantified by high-performance liquid chromatography equipped by UV detector (HPLC-UV). The present strategy was used for the simultaneous extraction and quantification of four selected chlorophenols (CPs) (as model analyte). The variables of the TFME were optimized using response surface methodology (Plackett-Burman and Box-Behnken design). Under the obtained optimum condition, the prepared film presented acceptable extraction properties including low limits of detection (0.03-0.22 µgL-1), good linear ranges (0.2-200 µgL-1, r2 > 0.9918) and satisfactory reproducibility (relative standard deviation, 3.6 < RSD < 5.8% for one film as inter- and intra-day RSD, 4.8 < RSD < 5.3% for film to film). Moreover, the obtained enrichment factors were in the range of 56-76. The kinetics and adsorption isotherm of the selected analytes adsorption to the prepared sorbent were also investigated. The maximum adsorption capacities of the selected analytes on the prepared sorbent were in the range of 26.4-80.1 mg g-1. The adsorption isotherm obeyed the Langmuir and Freundlich models. Moreover, the adsorption of the selected chlorophenols on the prepared film followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Finally, the HZIF-8 film was utilized for the quantification of selected CPs in different types of water and wastewater samples. The results showed satisfactory relative recoveries (93-102%) and acceptable precisions (3.6 < RSD < 9.2%).

Abstract
Priority pollutants chlorophenols are broadly used chemicals that are persistent in the environment and causing serious human health hazards. The current study introduces a novel adsorbent for the extraction of chlorophenols from river water, surface water, and milk by headspace solid-phase microextraction coupled with gas chromatography. The adsorbent composite was prepared by blending polycaprolactam (nylon-6) mat and newly synthesized carbon nanotubes decorated with cadmium oxide nanoparticles followed by electrospinning technique to produce based nanofiber. The proposed nanofiber was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction techniques. The main parameters that affect extraction efficiency, including ionic strength, extraction time, desorption time, and extraction temperature, were investigated and optimized. The linear range was 0.05-5 ng/mL; the limits of detection (signal/noise=3) were 0.02-0.04 ng/mL. The relative recoveries for real samples (river water, surface water, and milk) were in the range of 84-114%.

Abstract
A monolithic mixed matrix membrane of functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes-polyethersulfone (MWCNT/PES) was prepared in a non-covalent approach and employed as an SPME fiber for extraction of chlorophenols (CPs). The proposed extraction method was followed by GC-ECD to determine the analytes. The influencing factors on the extraction efficiency such as pH, ionic strength, extraction and desorption temperature and time were studied. Under the selected conditions, calibration curves were linear over a wide concentration range from 0.005 to 1000 µgL-1 (r2 > 0.9961) for target analytes. In addition, the limits of detection (LOD) of the method were obtained in the range of 0.3-30 ng L-1. The relative standard deviation (RSD) for single fiber repeatability (n = 5) is from 1.4 to 4.6%. Fiber-to-fiber repeatability (n = 3) was also evaluated and the RSD is in the range of 1.3-6.3%. Applications of proposed fiber for extraction of CPs from the headspace of urine and serum samples were successfully investigated. The relative recovery in the biological samples spiked with different levels of CPs were in the range of 91.6-102.5%.

Abstract
Chlorophenols (CPs) are known as a class of pollutants posing a great threat to the environment and human health because of their carcinogenesis and teratogenesis, and thus exploring convenient and efficient methods for their detection and identification becomes particularly important. Herein, we report a recyclable colorimetric sensor array according to the oxidase-mimicking catalytic characteristics of Fe3O4@MnOx for the high-performance quantification and differentiation of typical CPs. The core-shell Fe3O4@MnOx prepared by growing oxidase-like MnOx nanoflakes on the surface of magnetic Fe3O4 particles via a hydrothermal process can exhibit excellent catalytic activity to trigger the color reaction of CPs and 4-aminoantipyrine with the participation of O2. By utilizing the Fe3O4@MnOx-catalyzed color reaction, high-sensitivity quantitative analysis of CPs, taking 2-chlorophenol as a model, was realized, providing a detection limit as low as 0.85 μM. Given different chlorine substitution places and numbers in CPs impact the reaction kinetics diversely, a new nanozyme-based colorimetric sensor array was further constructed for the successful differentiation of various CPs with the help of hierarchical cluster analysis and principal component analysis. Accurate double-blind identification of unknown samples using the proposed sensor array was also demonstrated, indicating its reliability for practical practice.

Abstract
A sensitive method of CZE-ultraviolet (UV) detection based on the on-line preconcentration strategy of field-amplified sample injection (FASI) was developed for the simultaneous determination of five kinds of chlorophenols (CPs) namely 4-chlorophenol (4-CP), 2-chlorophenol (2-CP), 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP), 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (2,4,6-TCP), and 2,6-dichlorophenol (2,6-DCP) in water samples. Several parameters affecting CZE and FASI conditions were systematically investigated. Under the optimal conditions, sensitivity enhancement factors for 4-CP, 2-CP, 2,4-DCP, 2,4,6-TCP, and 2,6-DCP were 9, 27, 35, 43, and 43 folds, respectively, compared with the direct CZE, and the baseline separation was achieved within 5 min. Then, the developed FASI-CZE-UV method was applied to tap and lake water samples for the five CPs determination. The LODs (S/N = 3) were 0.0018-0.019 µg/mL and 0.0089-0.029 µg/mL in tap water and lake water, respectively. The values of LOQs in tap water (0.006-0.0074 µg/mL) were much lower than the maximum permissible concentrations of 2,4,6-TCP, 2,4-DCP, and 2-CP in drinking water stipulated by World Health Organization (WHO) namely 0.3, 0.04, and 0.01 µg/mL, respectively, and thereby the method was suitable to detect the CPs according to WHO guidelines. Furthermore, the method attained high recoveries in the range of 83.0-119.0% at three spiking levels of five CPs in the two types of water samples, with relative standard deviations of 0.37-8.58%. The developed method was proved to be a simple, sensitive, highly automated, and efficient alternative to CPs determination in real water samples.

Abstract
A simple and fast method named microfunnel-filter-based emulsification microextraction is introduced for an efficient determination of some organophosphorus pesticides including diazinon, malathion, and chlorpyrifos in the environmental samples including the river, sea, and well water. This method is based upon the dispersion of a low-toxicity organic solvent (dihexyl ether), as the extractant, in a high volume of an aqueous sample solution (45 mL). It is implemented without a centrifugation step, and using a syringe filter and a micro-funnel, the phase separation and transfer of the enriched analytes to the gas chromatograph are simply achieved. By filtration of the extractant phase, a suitable sample clean-up is obtained, and the total extraction time is just a few minutes. The factors influencing the extraction efficiency are optimized, and under the optimal conditions, the proposed method provides a good linearity (in the range of 15-1500 ng/mL (R2 > 0.996). A high enrichment factor is obtained (in the range of 306-342), and the method provides low limits of detection and quantification (in the ranges of 4-8 and 15-25 ng/mL, respectively).
