Abstract
Taste and smell are of direct importance in most social interactions. Radical disruptions in these senses can, therefore, substantially disrupt sociality. This paper focuses on the experiences of a particular type of disruption: persistent chemosensory dysfunctions after COVID-19. We conducted semi-structured interviews with 30 patients undergoing treatment for chemosensory dysfunctions and analyzed the ways in which their experiences have influenced social relations and activities, particularly regarding food and eating. The findings reveal that these dysfunctions have made the participants markedly aware that food and eating are pivotal to full participation in social life. As is smell, both surrounding smells and the perception of one's own smell, with dysfunctions leading to several social consequences. Such problems are handled through both avoidance behavior and adaptations. While adaptations facilitate interactions, they come at the cost of feeling a burden to others or not fully appreciating an event (e.g., a shared meal). Social support is of great importance, ranging from minor practical assistance, such as a friend checking if the milk is sour, to the profound emotional relief felt from empathic treatment and recognition that the problems are real. Here, healthcare professionals can play a vital role, even in the (perceived) absence of clinical effectiveness of the treatment. The experiences expressed are partially in line with other manifestations of Long COVID and with chemosensory dysfunctions due to other illnesses, but only partially, since this is a patient group with needs and experiences that are unique, in that sociality is so strongly affected solely by disruptions in sensory abilities.

Abstract
Objective While most patients with COVID-19-induced olfactory dysfunction (OD) recover spontaneously, those with persistent OD face significant physical and psychological sequelae. ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence chatbot, has grown as a tool for patient education. This study seeks to evaluate the quality of ChatGPT-generated responses for COVID-19 OD. Study Design Quantitative observational study. Setting Publicly available online website. Methods ChatGPT (GPT-4) was queried 4 times with 30 identical questions. Prior to questioning, Chat-GPT was "prompted" to respond (1) to a patient, (2) to an eighth grader, (3) with references, and (4) no prompt. Answer accuracy was independently scored by 4 rhinologists using the Global Quality Score (GCS, range: 1-5). Proportions of responses at incremental score thresholds were compared using χ 2 analysis. Flesch-Kincaid grade level was calculated for each answer. Relationship between prompt type and grade level was assessed via analysis of variance. Results Across all graded responses (n = 480), 364 responses (75.8%) were "at least good" (GCS ≥ 4). Proportions of responses that were "at least good" (P < .0001) or "excellent" (GCS = 5) (P < .0001) differed by prompt; "at least moderate" (GCS ≥ 3) responses did not (P = .687). Eighth-grade level (14.06 ± 2.3) and patient-friendly (14.33 ± 2.0) responses were significantly lower mean grade level than no prompting (P < .0001). Conclusion ChatGPT provides appropriate answers to most questions on COVID-19 OD regardless of prompting. However, prompting influences response quality and grade level. ChatGPT responds at grade levels above accepted recommendations for presenting medical information to patients. Currently, ChatGPT offers significant potential for patient education as an adjunct to the conventional patient-physician relationship.

Abstract
Objectives The aim of the present study was to follow the daily course of patients with olfactory dysfunction and healthy controls and to assess (i) how many times a day, (ii) at which time, and (iii) in which aspect of daily life participants are conscious about their sense of smell. Methods In this longitudinal study, 49 patients with smell loss and 30 healthy participants were enrolled. Olfactory function was assessed using the Sniffin' Sticks. All participants received paper diaries designed for a 14-day period, featuring 12 rows representing 12 daily hours and six columns for various daily life aspects. They were instructed to mark their awareness of smell by indicating the relevant row and column in the diary. Following the return of the diaries, a second olfactory test was conducted within the patient group. Results On average, patients were consciously aware of their sense of smell around 8 times daily, while healthy participants noted it about 6.5 times a day. Both groups primarily focused on their sense of smell during activities related to "eating," followed by considerations in "social life" and "personal hygiene." Interestingly, distinct patterns emerged: patients peaked in awareness at 8 a.m. and 7 p.m., whereas healthy individuals showed peaks at 6 a.m., 12 p.m., and 7 p.m. Despite regular diary use, we observed no improvement in patients' olfactory function or related quality of life. Conclusion The olfactory diary is a valuable tool unveiling individual smell awareness patterns in patients with smell loss, aiding in counseling and patient management. Level of Evidence 4.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Olfactory dysfunction (OD) is common among people with cystic fibrosis (PwCF). The Questionnaire of Olfactory Disorders (QOD) is a validated instrument that evaluates olfactory-specific quality-of-life. The QOD minimal clinically important difference (MCID) and factors associated with olfactory improvement after elexacaftor/tezacaftor/ivacaftor have not been determined for PwCF. METHODS Prospective observational data were pooled from three studies that enrolled adult PwCF with chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS). QOD scores and disease characteristics were assessed. To evaluate internal consistency and calculate the QOD MCID, Cronbach's alpha and four distribution-based methods were employed. For participants who enrolled prior to elexacaftor/tezacaftor/ivacaftor, QOD scores were obtained at baseline and after elexacaftor/tezacaftor/ivacaftor initiation. Multivariable regression was used to identify factors associated with QOD improvement. RESULTS Of 129 PwCF included, 65 had QOD scores before and 3-6 months after starting elexacaftor/tezacaftor/ivacaftor. Mean baseline QOD score was 6.5 ± 7.9. Mean Cronbach's alpha was ≥0.85. The MCID estimates were as follows: Cohen's effect size = 1.6, standard error of measurement = 2.5, ½ baseline standard deviation = 4.0, and minimal detectable change = 6.9. Mean MCID was 3.7. Of those with pre/post elexacaftor/tezacaftor/ivacaftor QOD scores, the mean change in QOD was -1.3 ± 5.4. After elexacaftor/tezacaftor/ivacaftor, QOD improvement surpassed the MCID in 22% of participants (14/65). Worse baseline QOD scores and nasal polyps were associated with improved QOD scores after elexacaftor/tezacaftor/ivacaftor (both p < 0.04). CONCLUSION The QOD MCID in PwCF was estimated to be 3.7. Elexacaftor/tezacaftor/ivacaftor led to qualitative but not clinically meaningful improvements in QOD score for most PwCF; PwCF with worse baseline QOD scores and nasal polyps improved in a clinically significant manner.

Abstract
Impaired olfactory function may be associated with the development of psychiatric disorders such as depression and anxiety; however, knowledge on the mechanisms underlying psychiatric disorders is incomplete. A reversible model of olfactory dysfunction, zinc sulfate (ZnSO4) nasal-treated mice, exhibit depression-like behavior accompanying olfactory dysfunction. Therefore, we investigated olfactory function and depression-like behaviors in ZnSO4-treated mice using the buried food finding test and tail suspension test, respectively; investigated the changes in the hippocampal microglial activity and neurogenesis in the dentate gyrus by immunohistochemistry; and evaluated the inflammation and microglial polarity related-proteins in the hippocampus using western blot study. On day 14 after treatment, ZnSO4-treated mice showed depression-like behavior in the tail suspension test and recovery of the olfactory function in the buried food finding test. In the hippocampus of ZnSO4-treated mice, expression levels of ionized calcium-binding adapter molecule 1 (Iba1), cluster of differentiation 40, inducible nitric oxide synthase, interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6, tumor necrosis factor-α, cleaved caspase-3, as well as the number of Iba1-positive cells and cell body size increased, and arginase-1 expression and neurogenesis decreased. Except for the increased IL-6, these changes were prevented by a microglia activation inhibitor, minocycline. The findings suggest that neuroinflammation due to polarization of M1-type hippocampal microglia is involved in depression accompanied with olfactory dysfunction.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Olfactory dysfunction (OD) is prevalent in people with cystic fibrosis (PwCF) and can negatively impact quality-of-life (QOL). This study evaluated perceptions of OD, investigated how OD impacts QOL, and assessed willingness to participate in OD research among the CF community. METHODS A 21-question survey was distributed through the CF Foundation's Community Voice program in 2023. The survey included questions on olfaction and interest in research. The Brief Questionnaire of Olfactory Disorders (BQOD), a validated person-reported outcome measure to assess QOL, was included. RESULTS Seventy-six responses were received. Overall, 91% (69/76) reported olfactory problems. Mean BQOD score was 5.0 (standard deviation=4.8), indicating olfactory QOL impairment was present. Ninety-five percent (72/76) reported research on OD is worthwhile and were willing to participate in research. CONCLUSION Among PwCF, OD and olfactory-specific QOL impairments are prevalent. There is strong interest and willingness to participate in OD research among the CF community.

Abstract
Objective To review and analyze the functional connectivity (FC) abnormalities in the brain olfactory network (ON) of patients with chronic rhinosinusitis with olfactory dysfunction (CRSwOD) and explore the relationship between these FC abnormalities and olfactory dysfunction, providing clues to the neurophysiological mechanisms underlying CRSwOD. Methods FC analysis on the ON of patients with CRSwOD and patients with chronic rhinosinusitis without olfactory dysfunction (CRSsOD) identified the regions of the ON with abnormal FC in CRSwOD patients, and the correlation between abnormal FC and clinical scales for chronic rhinosinusitis was analyzed. Results (1) Compared with the CRSsOD group, CRSwOD patients showed decreased FC between the bilateral orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) and the right middle frontal gyrus, (2) Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis revealed that the FC value between the right middle frontal gyrus and the left OFC (area under the curve (AUC) = 0.852, sensitivity: 0.821, specificity: 0.800, p < 0.001) was more capable of distinguishing whether CRS patients may have olfactory dysfunction than the FC value between the right middle frontal gyrus and the right OFC (AUC = 0.827, sensitivity: 0.893, specificity: 0.667, p < 0.001), and (3) Lund-Kennedy scores were positively correlated with the FC values between the right middle frontal gyrus and the left OFC (r = 0.443, p < 0.018). Lund-Mackay scores were also positively correlated with the FC values between the right middle frontal gyrus and the left OFC (r = 0.468, p < 0.012). Questionnaire of Olfactory Disorders-Negative Statements scores were negatively correlated with the FC values between the right middle frontal gyrus and the left OFC (r = -0.481, p < 0.001). Conclusion Persistent nasal inflammation affects the FC between the middle frontal gyrus and the OFC, which may serve as a potential imaging marker for identifying CRSwOD. The severity of nasal inflammation and olfactory damage is closely related to the FC between the middle frontal gyrus and OFC, and the abnormal changes in this FC can be used to explain the neurophysiological mechanisms behind the occurrence of olfactory dysfunction in patients.

Abstract
Objectives The aim of this study was to assess the brain functional changes of patients with chronic rhinosinusitis with olfactory dysfunction (CRSwOD) using regional homogeneity (ReHo) of resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans, and to better explain the occurrence and development of olfactory decline in patients with chronic sinusitis provides a new idea for the study of more advanced olfactory therapy modalities. Methods A total of 28 CRSwOD patients, 24 patients with CRS without olfactory dysfunction (CRSsOD), and 25 healthy controls (HCs) were recruited. All subjects underwent olfactory testing, clinical and brief psychological assessments, and MRI scans. A two-sided two-sample t test with AlphaSim correction (voxel-p < 0.001, cluster size >54 voxels) was used to detect differences between CRSwOD, CRSsOD, and HC groups. Results Compared with HCs, the ReHo values in traditional olfactory regions (e.g., parahippocampal gyrus (PHG), hippocampal, olfactory cortex) were increased, and ReHo values in the frontal gyrus, middle temporal gyrus, precuneus, and posterior cingulate gyrus were decreased in CRSwOD patients. The ReHo values in the precuneus and posterior cingulate gyrus of CRSwOD patients were negatively correlated with Questionnaire of Olfactory Disorders-Negative Statements (QOD-NS) scores. Compared with CRSsOD patients, the ReHo values in cerebellar regions were increased and those in the inferior temporal gyrus, precuneus, postcentral, and paracentral gyrus were decreased in CRSwOD patients. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve showed that the mean ReHo values significantly differed between the CRSwOD and CRSsOD groups. Conclusion Synchronization of regional brain activity in the regions of the secondary olfactory cortex orbitofrontal cortex (OFC), temporal gyrus, precuneus, and cerebellum may be closely related to the development of olfactory dysfunction. Precuneus and posterior cingulate gyrus may be critical brain areas of action for emotional dysfunction in CRSwOD patients.

Abstract
Introduction Olfactory dysfunction is one of many long-lasting symptoms associated with COVID-19, estimated to affect approximately 60% of individuals and often lasting several months after infection. The associated daily life problems can cause a decreased quality of life. Methods Here, we assessed the association between perceived quality of life and both qualitative and quantitative olfactory function (distorted and weakened sense of smell, respectively) in 58 individuals who had undergone confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection and who complained about olfactory dysfunction. Results Participants with large quantitative olfactory dysfunction experienced a greater reduction in their quality of life. Moreover, our participants had a high prevalence of qualitative olfactory dysfunction (81%) with a significant correlation between qualitative olfactory dysfunction and daily life impairment. Strong drivers of low quality of life assessments were lack of enjoyment of food as well as worries related to coping with long-term dysfunctions. Discussion These results stress the clinical importance of assessing qualitative olfactory dysfunction and the need to develop relevant interventions. Given the poor self-rated quality of life observed, healthcare systems should consider developing support structures, dietary advice, and guidelines adapted to individuals experiencing qualitative olfactory dysfunction.

Abstract
BACKGROUND After a severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection, smell disorders frequently occur, significantly affecting patients' quality of life (QoL). METHODS 110 patients with persistent olfactory disorder after coronavirus infection were enrolled. These patients underwent chemosensory testing using the Sniffin' Sticks test, and completed the Questionnaire of Olfactory Disorders (QOD). RESULTS 30% of the patients reported anosmia, and 70% reported hyposmia. Upon comparing subjective and chemosensory testing categories, good category matching was observed in 75.3% (i.e., anosmia based on both methods in 10 and hyposmia in 48 cases). Statistical analysis using the Chi-square test revealed a significant result (p = 0.001 *). Between the TDI (i.e., Threshold, Discrimination, Identification) results of the three subjective report groups (i.e., hyposmia, anosmia, and parosmia), no significant differences were observed. When the TDI and QOD results were compared, no consistent significant correlations were found in most TDI and QOD outcomes. Between the TDI and Scale 2 results, a significant, although slight correlation was observed by the Spearman's (rho = 0.213, p = 0.027 *) and Pearson's (rho = 0.201, p = 0.037 *) tests. CONCLUSIONS The nonsignificant correlation between objective and subjective methods suggests that these results should be interpreted independently. Moreover, adequate management is essential even in mild cases.

Abstract
The loss of olfactory stimulation correlates well with at least 68 widely differing neurological disorders, including depression, and we raise the possibility that this relationship may be causal. That is, it seems possible that olfactory loss makes the brain vulnerable to expressing the symptoms of these neurological disorders, while daily olfactory enrichment may decrease the risk of expressing these symptoms. This situation resembles the cognitive reserve that is thought to protect people with Alzheimer’s neuropathology from expressing the functional deficit in memory through the cumulative effect of intellectual stimulation. These relationships also resemble the functional response of animal models of human neurological disorders to environmental enrichment, wherein the animals continue to have the induced neuropathology, but do not express the symptoms as they do in a standard environment with restricted sensorimotor stimulation.

Abstract
Post-COVID syndrome can be defined as symptoms of COVID-19 that persist for longer than 12 weeks, with several studies reporting persistent symptoms relating to the sensory organs (eyes, ears, and nose). The aim of this systematic review was to examine the prevalence of persistent anosmia, hyposmia, ageusia, and hypogeusia, as well as eye/vision and ear/hearing related long-COVID symptoms. Authors searched the electronic databases from inception to November 2021. Search terms included words related to long-COVID, smell, taste, eyes/vision, and ears/hearing, with all observational study designs being included. A random effects meta-analysis was undertaken, calculating the prevalence proportions of anosmia, hyposmia, ageusia, and hypogeusia, respectively. From the initial pool, 21 studies met the inclusion criteria (total n 4,707; median n per study 125; median age = 49.8; median percentage female = 59.2%) and 14 were included in the meta-analysis The prevalence of anosmia was 12.2% (95% CI 7.7–16.6%), hyposmia 29.9% (95% CI 19.9–40%), ageusia 11.7% (95% CI 6.1–17.3%), and hypogeusia 31.2% (95% 16.4–46.1%). Several eye/vision and ear/hearing symptoms were also reported. Considering that changes in the sensory organs are associated with decreases in quality of life, future research should examine the etiology behind the persistent symptoms.
