The Recent Advances of Polymer-POSS Nanocomposites With Low Dielectric Constant

This study provides a comprehensive overview of the preparation methods for polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) monomers and polymer/POSS nanocomposites. It focuses on the latest advancements in using POSS to design polymer nanocomposites with reduced dielectric constants. The study emphasizes exploring the potential of POSS, either alone or in combination with other materials, to decrease the dielectric constant and dielectric loss of various polymers, including polyimides, bismaleimide resins, poly(aryl ether)s, polybenzoxazines, benzocyclobutene resins, polyolefins, cyanate ester resins, and epoxy resins. In addition, the research investigates the impact of incorporating POSS on improving the thermal properties, mechanical properties, surface properties, and other aspects of these polymers. The entire study is divided into two parts, discussing systematically the role of POSS in reducing dielectric constants during the preparation of POSS composites using both physical blending and chemical synthesis methods. The goal of this research is to provide valuable strategies for designing a new generation of low dielectric constant materials suitable for large-scale integrated circuits in the semiconductor materials domain.

Enhanced safety and strength of cotton fabrics through a novel 'H-shaped' multiple flame retardant elements agent

In response to the new concept of green sustainability, it is necessary to expand the functionality of bio-based natural fibers (such as cotton fabrics) to replace fabrics made from fossil fuels. One potential way of achieving this is through the use of phosphorus, boron and nitrogen based organic flame retardants. This article designs a special flame retardant system with high efficiency, high durability, and enhanced fabric strength. An "H" shaped flame retardant (TBSA) is synthesized using hydroxyethyl methylene phosphate, pentaerythritol diborate, and cyanuric chloride. After simple treatment, flame retardant fabric (TBSA/Cotton) is obtained, with a LOI value of 48.8 %. Self extinguishing is completing in the vertical flame test. The high FR efficiency reflects the progressiveness of multi flame retardant elements. It is worth noting that TBSA/Cotton exhibits excellent durability and improves the strength of the fabric. This is attributed to the covalent bonding between the "H" type flame retardant and multiple cellulose molecules, which compensates for the cracks and holes at the submicroscopic scale of natural cellulose and weakens the molecular slip effect. The research results of this article provide a good opportunity for the development of biomass cellulose flame retardant materials.

Construction of novel polybenzoxazine coating precursor exhibiting excellent anti-corrosion performance through monomer design

In this study, we utilized salicylaldehyde (SA) and p-toluidine (Tol-NH₂) to synthesize 2-(Z)[(4-methylphenyl)imino]methylphenol (SA-Tol-SF), which was then reduced to 2-[(4-methylphenyl)amino]methylphenol, producing SA-Tol-NH. SA-Tol-NH was further reacted with formaldehyde to create SA-Tol-BZ monomer. Poly(SA-Tol-BZ) was produced by thermally curing it at 210 °C, after synthesizing it from SA-Tol-BZ. The chemical structure of SA-Tol-BZ was analyzed using various analytical techniques such as FT-IR, ¹H NMR spectroscopy, and ¹³C NMR spectroscopy TGA, SEM, DSC, and X-ray analyses. Afterward, we applied the obtained poly(SA-Tol-BZ) onto mild steel (MS) using thermal curing and spray coating techniques. To examine the anticorrosion attributes of MS coated with poly(SA-Tol-BZ), electrochemical characterization was employed. The study proved that poly(SA-Tol-BZ) coating had a high level of effectiveness in preventing corrosion on MS, with an efficacy of 96.52%, and also exhibited hydrophobic properties.

Synthesis, characterization and protective efficiency of novel polybenzoxazine precursor as an anticorrosive coating for mild steel

In this study, 2-[(E)-(hexylimino)methyl] phenol (SA-Hex-SF) was synthesized by adding salicylaldehyde (SA) and n-hexylamine (Hex-NH₂), which was subsequently reduced by sodium borohydride to produce 2-[(hexylamino)methyl] phenol (SA-Hex-NH). Finally, the SA-Hex-NH reacted with formaldehyde to give a benzoxazine monomer (SA-Hex-BZ). Then, the monomer was thermally polymerized at 210 °C to produce the poly(SA-Hex-BZ). The chemical composition of SA-Hex-BZ was examined using FT-IR, ¹H, and ¹³C NMR spectroscopy. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray Diffraction (XRD), respectively, were used to examine the thermal behavior, surface morphology, and crystallinity of the SA-Hex-BZ and its PBZ polymer. Mild steel (MS) was coated by poly(SA-Hex-BZ) which was quickly prepared using spray coating and thermal curing techniques (MS). Finally, the electrochemical tests were used to evaluate the poly(SA-Hex-BZ)-coating on MS as anti-corrosion capabilities. According to this study, the poly(SA-Hex-BZ) coating was hydrophobic, and corrosion efficiency reached 91.7%.

Design Hybrid Porous Organic/Inorganic Polymers Containing Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxane/Pyrene/Anthracene Moieties as a High-Performance Electrode for Supercapacitor

We synthesized two hybrid organic-inorganic porous polymers (HPP) through the Heck reaction of 9,10 dibromoanthracene (A-Br₂) or 1,3,6,8-tetrabromopyrene (P-Br₄)/A-Br₂ as co-monomers with octavinylsilsesquioxane (OVS), in order to afford OVS-A HPP and OVS-P-A HPP, respectively. The chemical structures of these two hybrid porous polymers were validated through FTIR and solid-state ¹³C and ²⁹Si NMR spectroscopy. The thermal stability and porosity of these materials were measured by TGA and N₂ adsorption/desorption analyses, demonstrating that OVS-A HPP has higher thermal stability (T_d10: 579 °C) and surface area (433 m² g^-1) than OVS-P-A HPP (T_d10: 377 °C and 98 m² g^-1) due to its higher cross-linking density. Furthermore, the electrochemical analysis showed that OVS-P-A HPP has a higher specific capacitance (177 F g ^-1 at 0.5 A F g^-1) when compared to OVS-A HPP (120 F g ^-1 at 0.5 A F g^-1). The electron-rich phenyl rings and Faradaic reaction between the π-conjugated network and anthracene moiety may be attributed to their excellent electrochemical performance of OVS-P-A HPP.

Construction of Fluorescent Conjugated Polytriazole Containing Double-Decker Silsesquioxane: Click Polymerization and Thermal Stability

This study synthesized two azide-functionalized monomers through p-dichloro xylene and double-decker silsesquioxane (DDSQ) units with NaN₃ to form DB-N₃ and DDSQ-N₃ monomers, respectively. In addition, five different propargyl-functionalized monomers were also prepared from hydroquinone, bisphenol A, bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)methanone, 2,4-dihydroxybenzaldehyde (then reacted with hydrazine hydrate solution) and 1,2-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)-1,2-diphenylethene with propargyl bromide to form P-B, P-BPA, P-CO, P-NP, and P-TPE monomers, respectively. As a result, various DDSQ-based main chain copolymers could be synthesized using Cu(I)-catalyzed click polymerization through DDSQ-N₃ with different propargyl-functionalized monomers, of which the chemical structure and molecular weight could be confirmed by using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and gel permeation chromatography (GPC) analyses. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy analyses also could characterize the thermal stability, morphology, and optical behaviors of these DDSQ-based copolymers. All results indicate that the incorporation of an inorganic DDSQ cage could improve the thermal stability such as thermal decomposition temperature and char yield, because of the DDSQ dispersion homogeneously in the copolymer matrix, and this would then affect the optical properties of NP and TPE units in this work.

Distinct insight into the use of difunctional double-decker silsesquioxanes as building blocks for alternating A–B type macromolecular frameworks

A distinct look at known, hydrosilylation reactions used for the formation of DDSQ-based linear A–B alternating macromolecular systems with DPn > 1000 is presented. Selected physicochemical properties of obtained hybrid co-polymers were determined.

Construction of Porous Organic/Inorganic Hybrid Polymers Based on Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxane for Energy Storage and Hydrogen Production from Water

In this study, we used effective and one-pot Heck coupling reactions under moderate reaction conditions to construct two new hybrid porous polymers (named OVS-P-TPA and OVS-P-F HPPs) with high yield, based on silsesquioxane cage nanoparticles through the reaction of octavinylsilsesquioxane (OVS) with different brominated pyrene (P-Br₄), triphenylamine (TPA-Br₃), and fluorene (F-Br₂) as co-monomer units. The successful syntheses of both OVS-HPPs were tested using various instruments, such as X-ray photoelectron (XPS), solid-state ¹³C NMR, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analyses. All spectroscopic data confirmed the successful incorporation and linkage of P, TPA, and F units into the POSS cage in order to form porous OVS-HPP materials. In addition, the thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and N₂ adsorption analyses revealed the thermal stabilities of OVS-P-F HPP (T_d10 = 444 °C; char yield: 79 wt%), with a significant specific surface area of 375 m² g^-1 and a large pore volume of 0.69 cm³ g^-1. According to electrochemical three-electrode performance, the OVS-P-F HPP precursor displayed superior capacitances of 292 F g^-1 with a capacity retention of 99.8% compared to OVS-P-TPA HPP material. Interestingly, the OVS-P-TPA HPP showed a promising HER value of 701.9 µmol g^-1 h^-1, which is more than 12 times higher than that of OVS-P-F HPP (56.6 µmol g^-1 h^-1), based on photocatalytic experimental results.

Synthesis and Characterization of Cyclotri- and Tetrasiloxanes with Pyrenyl Groups

Cyclosiloxanes directly bearing polyaromatic groups on silicon atoms have scarcely been reported. Herein, hexa(1-pyrenyl)cyclotrisiloxane (2) and octa(1-pyrenyl)cyclotetrasiloxane (3) were successfully prepared from di(1-pyrenyl)silanediol (1) in the presence of a weak base such as tetraethylammonium acetate and triethylamine in MeCN. The structure of the cyclosiloxanes bearing multiple pyrenyl groups in the solid and solution states was evaluated by NMR, X-ray crystallography, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. All pyrenyl groups of 2 were oriented outward, and no π-π stacking of adjacent pyrenyl groups was observed. However, all pairs of adjacent pyrenyl groups at 1- and 3-positions in 3 are oriented in the same direction and were π-π stacked with respect to each other. The UV-vis spectra of 2 and 3 in organic solvents showed a slight broadening of the peaks, as observed for typical pyrene derivatives. Interestingly, the fluorescence spectra of 2 showed small monomer and strong excimer emissions; however, those of 3 showed only a strong excimer emission in all solvents. Partially pyrenylated cyclotri- and tetrasiloxanes (compounds 4 and 5) showed solvent-dependent monomer and excimer spectra as observed for di(1-pyrenyl)silane derivatives, implying that the excimer emissions of 2 and 3 arise from mainly geminal and vicinal pyrenyl groups, respectively.

Carbon Nanotube Migration in Melt-Compounded PEO/PE Blends and Its Impact on Electrical and Rheological Properties

In this work, the effects of MWCNT concentration and mixing time on the migration of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) within polyethylene oxide (PEO)/polyethylene (PE) blends are studied. Two-step mixing used to pre-localize MWCNTs within the PE phase and subsequently to observe their migration into the thermodynamically favored PEO phase. SEM micrographs show that many MWCNTs migrated into PEO. PEO/PE 40:60 polymer blend nanocomposites with 3 vol% MWCNTs mixed for short durations exhibited exceptional electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness (EMI SE) and electrical conductivity (14.1 dB and 22.1 S/m, respectively), with properties dropping significantly at higher mixing times, suggesting the disruption of percolated MWCNT networks within the PE phase. PE grafted with maleic anhydride (PEMA) was introduced as a compatibilizer to arrest the migration of MWCNTs by creating a barrier at the PEO/PE interface. For the compatibilized system, EMI SE and electrical conductivity measurements showed a peak in electrical properties at 5 min of mixing (15.6 dB and 68.7 S/m), higher than those found for uncompatibilized systems. These improvements suggest that compatibilization can be effective at halting MWCNT migration. Although utilizing differences in thermodynamic affinity to draw MWCNTs toward the polymer/polymer interface of polymer blend systems can be an effective way to achieve interfacial localization, an excessively low viscosity of the destination phase may play a major role in reducing the entrapment of MWCNTs at the interface.

An Ultrastable Porous Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxane/Tetraphenylthiophene Hybrid as a High-Performance Electrode for Supercapacitors

In this study, we synthesized three hybrid microporous polymers through Heck couplings of octavinylsilsesquioxane (OVS) with 2,5-bis(4-bromophenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole (OXD-Br₂), tetrabromothiophene (Th-Br₄), and 2,5-bis(4-bromophenyl)-3,4-diphenylthiophene (TPTh-Br₂), obtaining the porous organic–inorganic polymers (POIPs) POSS-OXD, POSS-Th, and POSS-TPTh, respectively. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and solid state ¹³C and ²⁹Si NMR spectroscopy confirmed their chemical structures. Thermogravimetric analysis revealed that, among these three systems, the POSS-Th POIP possessed the highest thermal stability (T₅: 586 °C; T₁₀: 785 °C; char yield: 90 wt%), presumably because of a strongly crosslinked network formed between its OVS and Th moieties. Furthermore, the specific capacity of the POSS-TPTh POIP (354 F g⁻¹) at 0.5 A g⁻¹ was higher than those of the POSS-Th (213 F g⁻¹) and POSS-OXD (119 F g⁻¹) POIPs. We attribute the superior electrochemical properties of the POSS-TPTh POIP to its high surface area and the presence of electron-rich phenyl groups within its structure.

Progress in the self-assembly of organic/inorganic polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) hybrids

This Review describes recent progress in the self-assembly of organic/inorganic POSS hybrids derived from mono-, di-, and multi-functionalized POSS cages. We highlight the self-assembled structures and physical properties of giant surfactants and chain-end- and side-chain-type hybrids derived from mono-functionalized POSS cages; main-chain-type hybrids derived from di-functionalized POSS cages; and star-shaped hybrids derived from multi-functionalized POSS cages; with various polymeric attachments, including polystyrene, poly(methyl methacrylate), phenolic, PVPh, and polypeptides.

Double-Decker-Shaped Polyhedral Silsesquioxanes Reinforced Epoxy/Bismaleimide Hybrids Featuring High Thermal Stability

In this study, we synthesized bismaleimide into a functionalized double-decker silsesquioxane (DDSQ) cage. This was achieved by hydrosilylation of DDSQ with nadic anhydride (ND), reacting it with excess p-phenylenediamine to obtain DDSQ-ND-NH₂, and treating with maleic anhydride (MA), which finally created a DDSQ-BMI cage structure. We observed that the thermal decomposition temperature (T_d) and char yield were both increased upon increasing the thermal polymerization temperature, and that these two values were both significantly higher than pure BMI without the DDSQ cage structure since the inorganic DDSQ nanoparticle could strongly enhance the thermal stability based on the nano-reinforcement effect. Based on FTIR, TGA, and DMA analyses, it was found that blending epoxy resin with the DDSQ-BMI cage to form epoxy/DDSQ-BMI hybrids could also enhance the thermal and mechanical properties of epoxy resin due to the organic/inorganic network formation created by the ring-opening polymerization of the epoxy group and the addition polymerization of the BMI group due to the combination of the inorganic DDSQ cage structure and hydrogen bonding effect. The epoxy/DDSQ-BMI = 1/1 hybrid system displayed high T_g value (188 °C), T_d value (397 °C), and char yield (40.4 wt%), which was much higher than that of the typical DGEBA type epoxy resin with various organic curing agents.

Highly Sensitive Photopolymer for Holographic Data Storage Containing Methacryl Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxane

Herein, via introducing eight methacryl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (Ma-POSS), we dramatically enhance the holographic performance of phenanthraquinone-doped poly(methyl methacrylate) (PQ/PMMA) photopolymer with excellent characteristics of high sensitivity, high diffraction efficiency, and neglectable volume shrinkage for holographic data storage, the photosensitivity, diffraction efficiency, and volume shrinkage reaching 1.47 cm/J, ∼75%, and ∼0.09%, respectively. Ma-POSS here dramatically enhances the photosensitivity ∼5.5 times, diffraction efficiency more than 50%, and suppressed the volume shrinkage over 4 times. Further analysis reveals that Ma-POSS obviously increased the molecular weight by grafting PMMA to be a star-shaped macromolecule. And the residual C═C of POSS-PMMA dramatically increased the photosensitivity. Moreover, the star-shaped POSS-PMMA acting as a plasticizer dramatically enhances the mechanical properties and so reduces the photoinduced volume shrinkage of PQ/PMMA. Finally, by the use of the POSS-PMMA/PQ in a collinear holography system, it appeared to be promising for a fast but low bit error rate in holographic information storage. The current study thence has not only successfully synthesized photopolymer materials with potential for highly sensitive holographic storage applications but also investigated the microphysical mechanism of the impact of Ma-POSS on the holographic properties of PQ/PMMA photopolymer and clarified the thermal- and photoreaction processes of the POSS-PMMA/PQ photopolymer.

Synergistic effect of organic-Zn(H2PO2)2 and lithium containing polyhedral oligomeric phenyl silse-squioxane on flame-retardant, thermal and mechanical properties of poly(ethylene terephthalate)

A novel synergy flame retardant system of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET)/organic-Zn(H2PO2)2/lithium containing polyhedral oligoheptyl silse-squioxane (Li-Ph-POSS) composites was prepared by the melt-blending method to improve the flame retardancy of PET. The synergistic effect of organic-Zn(H2PO2)2 and Li-Ph-POSS on the flame retardancy, thermal, and mechanical properties of the PET composites was investigated by the limiting oxygen index, vertical burning test, cone calorimeter, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimeter, tensile tester, and dynamic mechanical analysis, respectively. The results show that the synergistic flame retardant effect between organic-Zn(H2PO2)2 and Li-Ph-POSS improves both the flame retardancy and the crystallization of PET. Moreover, the Li-Ph-POSS has a positive effect on the mechanical property of PET. This work provides a promising strategy for mitigating the fire hazard of PET using this synergy flame retardant system.

Bio-based polybenzoxazines as an efficient coatings to protect mild steel surfaces from corrosion

New types of mono and bi-functional benzoxazine monomers were synthesized using cardanol (C) and 4-aminobenzonitrile (abn), p-phenylediamine ( ppda) along with paraformaldehyde. The synthesized benzoxazine monomers structure was elucidated by 1H, 13C-NMR and FTIR spectroscopic techniques. The polymerization temperature (Tp) of C-abn and C- ppda are noticed at 280oC and 237oC, respectively. It was also noticed that bi-functional benzoxazine (C- ppda) possesses lower curing temperature than mono-functional benzoxazine (C-abn). The ring opening polymerization of benzoxazine was confirmed by FTIR spectroscopy. Thermal analyses indicate that, benzoxazine [poly(C- ppda)] possesses higher thermal stability than poly(C-abn). The surface roughness of the benzoxazine coated MS specimen was analysed by atomic force microscope. The values of water contact angles obtained for poly(C-abn) and poly(C- ppda) are 145o and 148o, respectively. It was noticed that the mild steel specimen coated with bio-based benzoxazine C-abn exhibit excellent resistance to corrosion.

Effectiveness of an ocular adhesive polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane hybrid thermo-responsive FK506 hydrogel in a murine model of dry eye

Dry eye is a common ocular disease that results in discomfort and impaired vision, impacting an individual's quality of life. A great number of drugs administered in eye drops to treat dry eye are poorly soluble in water and are rapidly eliminated from the ocular surface, which limits their therapeutic effects. Therefore, it is imperative to design a novel drug delivery system that not only improves the water solubility of the drug but also prolongs its retention time on the ocular surface. Herein, we develop a copolymer from mono-functional POSS, PEG, and PPG (MPOSS-PEG-PPG, MPEP) that exhibits temperature-sensitive sol-gel transition behavior. This thermo-responsive hydrogel improves the water solubility of FK506 and simultaneously provides a mucoadhesive, long-acting ocular delivery system. In addition, the FK506-loaded POSS hydrogel possesses good biocompatibility and significantly improves adhesion to the ocular surface. In comparison with other FK506 formulations and the PEG-PPG-FK506 (F127-FK506) hydrogel, this novel MPOSS-PEG-PPG-FK506 (MPEP-FK506) hydrogel is a more effective treatment of dry eye in the murine dry eye model. Therefore, delivery of FK506 in this POSS hydrogel has the potential to prolong drug retention time on the ocular surface, which will improve its therapeutic efficacy in the management of dry eye.

Enhanced Electromagnetic Interference Shielding Properties of Immiscible Polyblends with Selective Localization of Reduced Graphene Oxide Networks

Herein, an effective technique of curing reaction-induced phase separation (CRIPS) was used to construct a reduced graphene oxide (RGO) network in the immiscible diglycidyl ether of the bisphenol A/polyetherimide (DGEBA/PEI) polyblend system. The unique chemical reduction of RGO facilitated the reduction of oxygenated groups and simultaneously appended amino groups that stimulate the curing process. The selective interfacial localization of RGO was predicted numerically by the harmonic and geometric mean technique and further confirmed by field emission transmission electron microscopy (FETEM) analysis. Due to interfacial localization, the electrical conductivity was increased to 366 S/m with 3 wt.% RGO reinforcement. The thermomechanical properties of nanocomposites were determined by dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). The storage modulus of 3 wt.% RGO-reinforced polyblend exhibited an improvement of ~15%, and glass transition temperature (T_g) was 10.1 °C higher over neat DGEBA. Furthermore, the total shielding effectiveness (SE_T) was increased to 25.8 dB in the X-band region, with only 3 wt.% RGO, which represents ~99.9% shielding efficiency. These phase separation-controlled nanocomposites with selective localization of electrically conductive nanofiller at a low concentration will extend the applicability of polyblends to multifunctional structural nanocomposite applications.

Thermally Stable and Reusable Ceramic Encapsulated and Cross-Linked CalB Enzyme Particles for Rapid Hydrolysis and Esterification

Candida antarctica lipase B (CalB) enzyme was encapsulated and cross-linked by silica matrix to enhance its thermal stability and reusability, and demonstrated an enzymatic ability for rapid hydrolysis and esterification. Silica encapsulated CalB particles (Si-E-CPs) and silica cross-linked CalB particles (Si-CL-CPs) were prepared as a function of TEOS concentration. The particle size analysis, thermal stability, catalytic activity in different pHs, and reusability of Si-E-CPs and Si-CL-CPs were demonstrated. Furthermore, the determination of the CalB enzyme in Si-E-CPs and Si-CL-CPs was achieved by Bradford assay and TGA analysis. Enzymatic hydrolysis was performed against the p-nitrophenyl butyrate and the catalytic parameters (K_m, V_max, and K_cat) were calculated by the Michaelis–Menten equation and a Lineweaver–Burk plot. Moreover, enzymatic synthesis for benzyl benzoate was demonstrated by esterification with an acyl donor of benzoic acid and two acyl donors of benzoic anhydride. Although the conversion efficiency of Si-CL-CPs was not much higher than that of native CalB, it has an efficiency of 91% compared to native CalB and is expected to be very useful because it has high thermal and pH stability and excellent reusability.

The Role of Phase Migration of Carbon Nanotubes in Melt-Mixed PVDF/PE Polymer Blends for High Conductivity and EMI Shielding Applications

In this work, the effects of blend ratio and mixing time on the migration of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) within poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)/polyethylene (PE) blends are studied. A novel two-step mixing approach was used to pre-localize MWCNTs within the PE phase, and subsequently allow them to migrate into the thermodynamically favored PVDF phase. Light microscopy images confirm that MWCNTs migrate from PE to PVDF, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images show individual MWCNTs migrating fully into PVDF, while agglomerates remained trapped at the PVDF/PE interface. PVDF:PE 50:50 and 20:80 polymer blend nanocomposites with 2 vol% MWCNTs exhibit exceptional electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness (EMI SE) at 10 min of mixing (13 and 16 dB, respectively-at a thickness of 0.45 mm), when compared to 30 s of mixing (11 and 12 dB, respectively), suggesting the formation of more interconnected MWCNT networks over time. TEM images show that these improved microstructures are concentrated on the PE side of the PVDF/PE interface. A modified version of the “Slim-Fast-Mechanism” is proposed to explain the migration behavior of MWCNTs within the PVDF/PE blend. In this theory, MWCNTs approaching perpendicular to the interface penetrate the PVDF/PE interface, while those approaching in parallel or as MWCNT agglomerates remain trapped. Trapped MWCNTs act as barriers to additional MWCNTs, regardless of geometry. This mechanism is verified via TEM and scanning electron microscopy and suggests the feasibility of localizing MWCNTs at the interface of PVDF/PE blends.

Metal Complexes of the Porphyrin-Functionalized Polybenzoxazine

New porphyrin-functionalized benzoxazine (Por-BZ) in high purity and yield was synthesized in this study based on ¹H and ¹³C NMR and FTIR spectroscopic analyses through the reduction of Schiff base formed from tetrakis(4-aminophenyl)porphyrin (TAPP) and salicylaldehyde and the subsequent reaction with CH₂O. Thermal properties of the product formed through ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of Por-BZ were measured using DSC, TGA and FTIR spectroscopy. Because of the rigid structure of the porphyrin moiety appended to the benzoxazine unit, the temperature required for ROP (314 °C) was higher than the typical Pa-type benzoxazine monomer (ca. 260 °C); furthermore, poly(Por-BZ) possessed a high thermal decomposition temperature (T_d10 = 478 °C) and char yield (66 wt%) after thermal polymerization at 240 °C. An investigation of the thermal and luminescence properties of metal–porphyrin complexes revealed that the insertion of Ni and Zn ions decreased the thermal ROP temperatures of the Por-BZ/Ni and Por-BZ/Zn complexes significantly, to 241 and 231 °C, respectively. The metal ions acted as the effective promoter and catalyst for the thermal polymerization of the Por-BZ monomer, and also improved the thermal stabilities after thermal polymerization.

Microporous Carbon and Carbon/Metal Composite Materials Derived from Bio-Benzoxazine-Linked Precursor for CO2 Capture and Energy Storage Applications

There is currently a pursuit of synthetic approaches for designing porous carbon materials with selective CO2 capture and/or excellent energy storage performance that significantly impacts the environment and the sustainable development of circular economy. In this study we prepared a new bio-based benzoxazine (AP-BZ) in high yield through Mannich condensation of apigenin, a naturally occurring phenol, with 4-bromoaniline and paraformaldehyde. We then prepared a PA-BZ porous organic polymer (POP) through Sonogashira coupling of AP-BZ with 1,3,6,8-tetraethynylpyrene (P-T) in the presence of Pd(PPh3)4. In situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry revealed details of the thermal polymerization of the oxazine rings in the AP-BZ monomer and in the PA-BZ POP. Next, we prepared a microporous carbon/metal composite (PCMC) in three steps: Sonogashira coupling of AP-BZ with P-T in the presence of a zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-67) as a directing hard template, affording a PA-BZ POP/ZIF-67 composite; etching in acetic acid; and pyrolysis of the resulting PA-BZ POP/metal composite at 500 °C. Powder X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) measurements revealed the properties of the as-prepared PCMC. The PCMC material exhibited outstanding thermal stability (Td10 = 660 °C and char yield = 75 wt%), a high BET surface area (1110 m2 g-1), high CO2 adsorption (5.40 mmol g-1 at 273 K), excellent capacitance (735 F g-1), and a capacitance retention of up to 95% after 2000 galvanostatic charge-discharge (GCD) cycles; these characteristics were excellent when compared with those of the corresponding microporous carbon (MPC) prepared through pyrolysis of the PA-BZ POP precursors with a ZIF-67 template at 500 °C.

Recent Advances in Polyurethane/POSS Hybrids for Biomedical Applications

Advanced organic-inorganic materials-composites, nanocomposites, and hybrids with various compositions offer unique properties required for biomedical applications. One of the most promising inorganic (nano)additives are polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS); their biocompatibility, non-toxicity, and phase separation ability that modifies the material porosity are fundamental properties required in modern biomedical applications. When incorporated, chemically or physically, into polyurethane matrices, they substantially change polymer properties, including mechanical properties, surface characteristics, and bioactivity. Hence, this review is dedicated to POSS-PU composites that have recently been developed for applications in the biomedical field. First, different modes of POSS incorporation into PU structure have been presented, then recent developments of PU/POSS hybrids as bio-active composites for scaffolds, cardiovascular stents, valves, and membranes, as well as in bio-imaging and cancer treatment, have been described. Finally, characterization and methods of modification routes of polyurethane-based materials with silsesquioxanes were presented.

Controlled Growth of Organosilane Micropatterns on Hydrophilic and Hydrophobic Surfaces Templated by Vacuum Ultraviolet Photolithography

In this report, micropatterns of (3-aminopropyl)trimethoxysilane (APTMS) were developed on hydrophilic and hydrophobic surfaces after patterning using 172 nm vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) photolithography. Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) formed on Si substrates through UV hydrosilylation of 1-hexadecene (HD) and 10-undecenoic acid (UDA) were used as hydrophilic and hydrophobic surfaces, respectively. For templating the HD- and UDA-SAMs, the VUV light was exposed to HD- and UDA-SAMs from the slits of photomasks in atmospheric and evacuated environments, respectively. Various oxygenated groups were generated at the exposed domains of HD-SAM, while the COOH groups were trimmed from the irradiated domains of UDA-SAM. The APTMS molecules were immobilized on the domains that were terminated by oxygenated groups after chemical vapor deposition (CVD). The thicknesses of the developed APTMS micropatterns increased significantly by raising the CVD temperature and in the presence of ambient air in the CVD Teflon container as well. The increase in thicknesses was ascribed to the formation of APTMS multilayers, which were mediated by H₃N⁺ ions. Also, the developed APTMS micropatterns on the UDA-SAM patterned by VUV light irradiation in a high-vacuum environment (HV-VUV) were thicker than those on the VUV/(O) patterned HD-SAM due to the presence of inactive oxygenated groups at the surface of VUV/(O)-terminated domains of HD-SAM such as COO-C and C-O-C groups. The presence of water or ambient air facilitated the silane coupling between the silyl groups with the oxygenated and amino groups The combination of VUV photolithography and the CVD method with control of the conditions would enable us to control the thicknesses and shapes of the developed APTMS micropatterns. These findings illustrate the applicability of VUV photolithography for templating hydrophobic and hydrophobic surfaces toward the development of organosilane architectures, which can be feasible for several applications.

Self-Polymerization Promoting Monomers: In Situ Transformation of Disulfide-Linked Benzoxazines into the Thiazolidine Structure

Polybenzoxazines obtained especially from green synthons are facing challenges of the requirement of high ring-opening polymerization (ROP) temperature of the monomer, thus affecting their exploration at the industrial front. This demands effective structural changes in the monomer itself, to mediate catalyst-free polymerization at a low energy via one-step synthesis protocol. In this regard, monomers based on disulfide-linked bisbenzoxazine were successfully synthesized using cystamine (biobased) and cardanol (agro-waste)/phenol. Reduction of the disulfide bridge in the monomer using dithiothreitol under mild conditions in situ transformed the oxazine ring in the monomer, via neighboring group participation of the -SH group in a transient intermediate monomer, into a thiazolidine structure, which is otherwise difficult to synthesize. Structural transformation of ring-opening followed by the ring-closing intramolecular reaction led to an interconversion of O-CH₂-N containing a six-membered oxazine ring to S-CH₂-N containing a five-membered thiazolidine ring and a phenolic-OH. The structure of the monomer with the oxazine ring and its congener with the thiazolidine ring was characterized by spectroscopic methods and X-ray analysis. Kinetics of structural transformation at a molecular level is studied in detail, and it was found that the reaction proceeded via a transient 2-aminoethanethiol-linked benzoxazine intermediate, as supported by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and density functional theory studies. The thiazolidine-ring-containing monomer promotes ROP at a substantially low temperature than the reported mono-/bisoxazine monomers due to the dual mode of facilitation of the ROP reaction, both by phenolic-OH and by ring strain. Surprisingly, both the monomer structures led to the formation of a similar polymer structure, as supported by thermogravimetric analysis and Fourier transform infrared study. The current work highlights the benefits of inherent functionalities in naturally sourced feedstocks as biosynthons for the new latest generation of benzoxazine monomers.

Induction heating induced self-healing of nanocomposites based on surface-functionalized cationic iron oxide particles and polyelectrolytes

Supramolecular interactions represent versatile, reversible, and intrinsic mechanisms for bond formation after the failure of materials. Ionic interactions excel through high flexibility and binding strength. In this study, ionic interactions between polymer matrices and inorganic nanoparticles were used to induce self-healing properties. Random, anionic polyelectrolyte copolymers consisting of di(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate and sodium-4-(methacryloyloxy)butan-1-sulfonate were synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization. Differential scanning calorimetry measurements confirmed the adjustability of the glass transition temperature via the polymer composition. Within the glass transition temperature window of the homopolymers from -23 °C to 126 °C, the range between -18 °C to 50 °C was examined, generating suitable matrices for self-healing. Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles with a size of 8 nm were synthesized by thermal decomposition of iron(iii) acetylacetonate and used as the inorganic filler. Positive surface charges were introduced by functionalization with N,N,N-trimethyl-6-phosphonhexan-1-aminium bromide. Functionalization was confirmed with FTIR, TGA, and zeta potential measurements. Ionic interactions between filler and polymer promote a uniform particle dispersion within the material. Self-healing experiments were performed at 80 °C and without the addition of further healing agents. Utilizing the magnetic properties induced by the iron oxide nanoparticles, spatially resolved healing within an alternating magnetic field was achieved on a μm scale.
