Double dynamic bonds tough hydrogel with high self‐healing properties based on acylhydrazone bonds and borate bonds

A self-healing thermogelling polymer with tunable transparency based on biomolecule alginate grafting phenylboronic acid

Thermogelling polymers with transparency, structure stability and biocompatibility are promising for biomedicine application. In this study, a thermogelling polymer P-C5PEG with tunable transparency was developed by the reaction between alternating copolymer C5PEG and chemically modified biomolecule Alg-PBA via boronic ester bonds. The sol-to-gel transition of P-C5PEG aqueous solution sensitively responded to changes in temperature, and the critical value could be adjusted between 15 and 40 °C by varying the content of C5PEG and Alg-PBA. As the weight ratio of Alg-PBA to C5PEG was over 0.3, the transparency of as-synthesized hydrogel kept above 75 % at 37 °C. Meanwhile, immersion P-C5PEG hydrogel in CaCl2 solution significantly increased its mechanical strength by 3 times due to chelation effect. The shear-resistance and self-healing properties were ensured by dynamic boronic ester bonds due to the protective effect of hydrophobic gel network. As a drug delivery, P-C5PEG hydrogel had a swelling rate of 3748.7 ± 103 % in PBS and could continuously release fluorescein sodium within 24 h. Moreover, the in vitro degradability and cytotoxicity of P-C5PEG was confirmed. Finally, the mechanisms behind the thermogelling property and tunable transparency were revealed. Overall, this thermogelling P-C5PEG polymer, with tunable transparency and thermo-responsiveness, exhibits great potential for biomedicine application.

Self-healing, antioxidant, and antibacterial Bletilla striata polysaccharide-tannic acid dual dynamic crosslinked hydrogels for tissue adhesion and rapid hemostasis

Biomaterials capable of achieving effective sealing and hemostasis at moist wounds are in high demand in the clinical management of acute hemorrhage. Bletilla striata polysaccharide (BSP), a natural polysaccharide renowned for its hemostatic properties, holds promising applications in biomedical fields. In this study, a dual-dynamic-bonds crosslinked hydrogel was synthesized via a facile one-pot method utilizing poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)-borax as a matrix system, followed by the incorporation of BSP and tannic acid (TA). Chemical borate ester bonds formed around borax, coupled with multiple physical hydrogen bonds between BSP and other components, enhanced the mechanical properties and rapid self-healing capabilities. The catechol moieties in TA endowed the hydrogel with excellent adhesive strength of 30.2 kPa on the surface of wet tissues and facilitated easy removal without residue. Benefiting from the synergistic effect of TA and the preservation of the intrinsic properties of BSP, the hydrogel exhibited outstanding biocompatibility, antibacterial, and antioxidant properties. Moreover, it effectively halted acute bleeding within 31.3 s, resulting in blood loss of 15.6 % of that of the untreated group. As a superior hemostatic adhesive, the hydrogel in this study is poised to offer a novel solution for addressing future acute hemorrhage, wound healing, and other biomedical applications.

The promising application of hydrogel microneedles in medical application

OBJECTIVES

Hydrogel microneedles are emerging, and promising microneedles mainly composed of swelling polymers. This review is intended to summarize the preparation materials, formation mechanisms, applications and existing problems of hydrogel microneedles.

METHODS

We collected the literature on the materials, preparation and application of hydrogel microneedles in recent years, and summarized their mechanism and application in drugs delivery.

KEY FINDINGS

Hydrogel microneedles have higher safety and capabilities of controlled drug release, and have been mainly used in tumour and diabetes treatment, as well as clinical monitoring. In recent years, hydrogel microneedles have shown great potential in drug delivery, and have played the role of whitening, anti-inflammatory and promoting healing.

CONCLUSIONS

As an emerging drug delivery idea, hydrogel microneedles for drug delivery has gradually become a research hotspot. This review will provide a systematic vision for the favourable development of hydrogel microneedles and their promising application in medicine, especially drug delivery.

Application and Research Prospect of Functional Polymer Gels in Oil and Gas Drilling and Development Engineering

Polymer gel materials are formed by physically crosslinking and chemically crosslinking to form a gel network system with high mechanical properties and reversible performance. Due to their excellent mechanical properties and intelligence, polymer gel materials are widely used in biomedical, tissue engineering, artificial intelligence, firefighting and other fields. Given the current research status of polymer gels at home and abroad and the current application status of oilfield drilling, this paper reviews the mechanism of polymer gels formed by physically crosslinking and chemically crosslinking, summarizes the performance characteristics and the mechanism of action of polymer gels formed by non-covalent bonding, such as hydrophobic bonding, hydrogen bonding, electrostatic and Van der Waals interactions interactions, and covalent bonding such as imine bonding, acylhydrazone bonding and Diels-Alder reaction. The current status and outlook of the application of polymer gels in drilling fluids, fracturing fluids and enhanced oil recovery are also introduced. We expand the application fields of polymer gel materials and promote the development of polymer gel materials in a more intelligent direction.

Tannic Acid Crosslinked Self-Healing and Reprocessable Silicone Elastomers with Improved Antibacterial and Flame Retardant Properties

Silicone elastomers are widely used in aviation, electronics, automotive, and medical device fields, and their overuse inevitably causes recycled problems. In addition, the elastomers are subject to attack by bacteria and fire during use in some application scenarios, which is a safety hazard. Therefore, there is a great need to prepare silicone elastomers with improved antibacterial, flame retardant, self-healing, and recyclable functions. A new strategy is proposed to prepare silicone elastomers with bio-based tannic acid as cross-linkers to solve this problem by using polydimethylsiloxane as a soft chain segment and 2,2-bis(hydroxymethyl)propionic acid as an intermediate chain extender. Based on the phenol carbamate bonding and hydrogen bonding interactions, the elastomer has efficient self-healing ability and can achieve dynamic dissociation at 120 °C for complete recovery. In addition, due to the unique spatial structure and polyphenolic hydroxyl groups of tannic acid, the mechanical properties of the elastomer are greatly improved with an antimicrobial efficiency of over 90% and a final oxygen index of 25.5%. The multifunctional silicone elastomer has great potential applications in recyclable refractory materials and antimicrobial materials.
