Mechanisms and applications of bioinspired underwater/wet adhesives

A bioinspired switchable adhesive patch with adhesion and suction mechanisms for laparoscopic surgeries

Medical adhesives play an important role in clinical medicine because of their flexibility and convenient operation. However, they are still limited to laparoscopic surgeries, which have demonstrated urgent demand for liver retraction with minimal damage to the human body. Here, inspired by the suction cup structure of octopus, an adhesive patch with excellent mechanical properties, robust and switchable adhesiveness, and biocompatibility is proposed. The adhesive patch is combined by the attachment body mainly made of poly(acrylic acid) grafted with N-hydroxysuccinimide ester, crosslinked biodegradable gelatin methacrylate and biodegradable biopolymer gelatin to mimic the adhesive sucker rim, and the temperature-sensitive telescopic layer of microgel-crosslinked poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) to shrink and form internal cavity with reduced pressure. Through mechanical tests, adhesion evaluation, and biocompatibility analysis, the bioinspired adhesive patch has demonstrated its capacity not only in adhesion to tissues but also in potential treatment for medical applications, especially laparoscopic technology. The bioinspired adhesive patch can break through the limitations of traditional retraction methods, and become an ideal candidate for liver retraction in laparoscopic surgery and related clinical medicine.

Natural Polymer-Based Hydrogel Dressings for Wound Healing

Significance: Acute wounds such as severe burns and chronic wounds like diabetic ulcers present a significant threat to human health. Wound dressings made from natural polymers offer inherent properties that effectively enhance wound healing outcomes and reduce healing time. Recent Advances: Numerous innovative hydrogels are being developed and translated to the clinic to successfully treat various wound types. This underscores the substantial potential of hydrogels in the future wound care market. Economically, annual sales of wound care products are projected to reach $15-22 billion by 2024. Critical Issues: While chitosan-, cellulose-, and collagen-based hydrogel dressings are currently commercially available, scaling-up and manufacturing hydrogels for commercial products remain a challenging process. In addition, ensuring the sterility and stability of the chemical or biological components comprising the hydrogel is a critical consideration. Future Directions: In light of the persistent increase in wound fatalities and the resulting economic and social impacts, as well as the importance of educating the public about dietary health and disease, there should be increased investment in new wound care dressings, particularly hydrogels derived from natural products. With numerous researchers dedicated to advancing preclinical hydrogels, the future holds promise for more innovative and more personalized hydrogel wound dressings.

An Overview on the Adhesion Mechanisms of Typical Aquatic Organisms and the Applications of Biomimetic Adhesives in Aquatic Environments

Water molecules pose a significant obstacle to conventional adhesive materials. Nevertheless, some marine organisms can secrete bioadhesives with remarkable adhesion properties. For instance, mussels resist sea waves using byssal threads, sandcastle worms secrete sandcastle glue to construct shelters, and barnacles adhere to various surfaces using their barnacle cement. This work initially elucidates the process of underwater adhesion and the microstructure of bioadhesives in these three exemplary marine organisms. The formation of bioadhesive microstructures is intimately related to the aquatic environment. Subsequently, the adhesion mechanisms employed by mussel byssal threads, sandcastle glue, and barnacle cement are demonstrated at the molecular level. The comprehension of adhesion mechanisms has promoted various biomimetic adhesive systems: DOPA-based biomimetic adhesives inspired by the chemical composition of mussel byssal proteins; polyelectrolyte hydrogels enlightened by sandcastle glue and phase transitions; and novel biomimetic adhesives derived from the multiple interactions and nanofiber-like structures within barnacle cement. Underwater biomimetic adhesion continues to encounter multifaceted challenges despite notable advancements. Hence, this work examines the current challenges confronting underwater biomimetic adhesion in the last part, which provides novel perspectives and directions for future research.

The Synergistic Effect of Graphene Oxide in Epoxy Resin on Photocured Coating Films with Anticorrosion and Antibacterial Properties

In this work, graphene oxide (GO) and epoxy-functionalized graphene oxide (GOSi) are chosen as additives and incorporated into epoxy resin (EP) for nanocomposite photo-coating films (GO/EP and GOSi/EP series). Compared to GO/EP, the GOSi/EP nanocomposite demonstrates strong binding and excellent dispersibility, highlighting covalent bonding between GOSi and the epoxy coating. Furthermore, GOSi/EP-based films demonstrated superior thermal stability and adhesion performance on galvanized steel plates. The corrosion performance of the coated galvanized steel is investigated using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and polarization curve analysis (Tafel). The effectiveness of corrosion protection is evaluated based on a combination of photoreactivity, crosslinking density, dispersity, and adhesion properties. Out of all the treated films, the film based on 0.1GOSi/EP exhibited the highest percentage of inhibition (98.89%) and demonstrated superior long-term anticorrosion stability. In addition, the 0.1GOSi/EP based formulation showed remarkable antibacterial activity against S. aureus, resulting in a 92% reduction. This work demonstrates the development of a facile, environmentally friendly functionalized graphene oxide/epoxy photocured film with superior dual functionalities in both anticorrosion and antibacterial properties. These advancements hold promising potential for impactful practical applications.

Molecular Crowding: The History and Development of a Scientific Paradigm

It is now generally accepted that macromolecules do not act in isolation but "live" in a crowded environment, that is, an environment populated by numerous different molecules. The field of molecular crowding has its origins in the far 80s but became accepted only by the end of the 90s. In the present issue, we discuss various aspects that are influenced by crowding and need to consider its effects. This Review is meant as an introduction to the theme and an analysis of the evolution of the crowding concept through time from colloidal and polymer physics to a more biological perspective. We introduce themes that will be more thoroughly treated in other Reviews of the present issue. In our intentions, each Review may stand by itself, but the complete collection has the aspiration to provide different but complementary perspectives to propose a more holistic view of molecular crowding.

Nature-Inspired Wet Drug Delivery Platforms

Nature has created various organisms with unique chemical components and multi-scale structures (e.g., foot proteins, toe pads, suckers, setose gill lamellae) to achieve wet adhesion functions to adapt to their complex living environments. These organisms can provide inspirations for designing wet adhesives with mediated drug release behaviors in target locations of biological surfaces. They exhibit conformal and enhanced wet adhesion, addressing the bottleneck of weaker tissue interface adhesion in the presence of body fluids. Herein, it is focused on the research progress of different wet adhesion and bioinspired fabrications, including adhesive protein-based adhesion and inspired adhesives (e.g., mussel adhesion); capillarity and Stefan adhesion and inspired adhesive surfaces (e.g., tree frog adhesion); suction-based adhesion and inspired suckers (e.g., octopus' adhesion); interlocking and friction-based adhesion and potential inspirations (e.g., mayfly larva and teleost adhesion). Other secreted protein-induced wet adhesion is also reviewed and various suckers for other organisms and their inspirations. Notably, one representative application scenario of these bioinspired wet adhesives is highlighted, where they function as efficient drug delivery platforms on target tissues and/or organs with requirements of both controllable wet adhesion and optimized drug release. Finally, the challenges of these bioinspired wet drug delivery platforms in the future is presented.

Development of Biocompatible Mussel-Inspired Cellulose-Based Underwater Adhesives

Conventional adhesives have poor underwater adhesion and harm to human health and the environment during their use, which largely limits their practical applications. Herein, we synthesized cellulose-based adhesives with underwater adhesion and biocompatibility by grafting N-(3,4-dihydroxyphenethyl)methacrylamide into the cellulose chain via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). FTIR, 1H NMR, and XPS analyses ensured the successful preparation of the cellulose-based adhesive polymers. The different properties of the prepared adhesives, including swelling ratio, adhesion strength, and biocompatibility are examined. Results found that the lap shear strength is enhanced by increasing the catechol content. When catechol content is 27.2 mol %, cellulose-based adhesive with the addition of Fe3+ possesses a strong lap shear strength of 2.13 MPa in a dry environment, 0.10 MPa underwater, and 0.16 MPa under seawater for iron substrate, respectively. In addition, the cell culture test demonstrated that the prepared adhesives have outstanding biocompatibility. The cellulose-based adhesives with underwater adhesion and biocompatibility have potential applications in biomedicine, electronic engineering, and construction fields.

Underwater Adhesives from Redox-Responsive Polyplexes of Thiolated Polyamide Polyelectrolytes

We report the fabrication of optically clear underwater adhesives using polyplexes of oppositely charged partially-thiolated polyamide polyelectrolytes (TPEs). The thiol content of the constituent PEs was varied to assess its influence on the adhesive properties of the resulting glues. These catechol-free, redox-responsive TPE-adhesives were formulated in aquo and exhibited high optical transparency and strong adhesion even on submerged or moist surfaces of diverse polar substrates such as glass, aluminium, wood, and bone pieces. The adhesives could be cured under water through oxidative disulphide crosslinking of the constituent TPEs. The polyamide backbone provided multi-site H-bonding interactions with the substrates while the disulphide crosslinking provided the cohesive strength to the glue. Strong adhesion of mammalian bones (load bearing capacity upto 7 kg/cm2 ) was achieved using the adhesive containing 30 mol % thiol residues. Higher pH and use of oxidants such as povidone-iodine solution enhanced the curing rate of the adhesives, and so did the use of Tris buffer instead of Phosphate buffer. The porous architecture of the adhesive and its progressive degradation in aqueous medium over the course of three weeks bode well for diverse biomedical applications where temporary adhesion of tissues is required.

Preparation and Hemostatic Effect of Micro-Nanograded Porous Particles Doped with Dopamine-Based Water-Triggered Intelligent Composite Adhesives

The wet environment of water or tissue in bleeding wounds poses significant challenges to the adhesion performance of existing hemostatic adhesives. An intelligent composite adhesive prepared by doping starch-based silicate micro-nanograded porous particles (MBC@CMS) with dopamine-hyperbranched polymers (HPD, 7800 Mw) synthesized by the Michael addition reaction could be triggered by water to form a glue (MBC@CMS-HPD). The results indicated that MBC@CMS-HPD could still have adhesion properties under running water washing and water immersion and could effectively seal the water outlet. The results of the glue-forming mechanism showed that MBC@CMS-HPD had better wettability than water, which could eliminate water molecules at the wet adhesive surface. When contacted with water, the agglomeration of the HPD hydrophobic chain increases the exposure of the catechol group, and the relative atomic mass of the N element on the surface increases from 2.8 to 4.8%. The adhesion of MBC@CMS-HPD was enhanced and stable. MBC@CMS-HPD showed significant hemostasis effects in five injury bleeding models of Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats and New Zealand rabbits. Especially in the fatal femoral artery bleeding model of New Zealand rabbits, MBC@CMS-HPD reduced the amount of bleeding by 75% and shortened the bleeding time by 78% compared with the a-cyanoacrylate adhesives. The results of the coagulation mechanism showed that compared with HPD, MBC@CMS-HPD could activate both endogenous and exogenous coagulation pathways. Among them, after contact with blood, HPD formed a gel to close the blood outlet, and MBC@CMS entered the wound to activate the internal and external coagulation pathways. In addition, HPD and MBC@CMS had good histocompatibility and degradability, which has the potential to be applied to different wounds.

Scalable Underwater Adhesives with High-Strength, Long-Term, and Harsh-Environment Adhesion Enabled by Heterocyclic Chemistry

Developing scalable and high-performance underwater adhesives is important in various biomedical and industrial applications. However, despite massive efforts, the realization of such adhesives remains a challenging task, as mainly imposed by the difficulty in balancing the interfacial and bulk properties via an efficient way. Here, we report a facile yet effective strategy to construct a novel underwater adhesive with multiple advantaged performances by virtue of heterocyclic chemistry. This adhesive is designed with the cooperation of a heterocycle-based versatile adhesive functionality and an eco-friendly hydrophilic matrix with cross-linkable sites, which allows water absorption to destroy hydration layer, diverse molecular interactions to enhance interfacial adhesion, and abundant covalent crosslinks to strengthen bulk cohesion. Such a rational design endows the adhesive with strong underwater adhesion (up to 1.16 MPa for wood and 0.36 MPa for poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE)), long-term durability (maintaining pristine strength even after 4 months), and harsh-environment stability (salt, acidic/alkaline, low/high-temperature solutions). This strategy is also generic to derive more adhesive formulas, which offers a new direction for designing the next-generation underwater adhesives with high performance and scalability for practical applications.

Catechol-Amine-Decorated Epoxy Resin as an Underwater Adhesive: A Coacervate Concept Using a Liquid Marble Strategy

The attachment phenomena of various hierarchical architectures found in nature, especially underwater adhesion, have drawn extensive attention to the development of similar biomimicking adhesives. Marine organisms show spectacular adhesion characteristics because of their foot protein chemistry and the formation of an immiscible phase (coacervate) in water. Herein, we report a synthetic coacervate derived using a liquid marble route composed of catechol amine-modified diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (EP) polymers wrapped by silica/PTFE powders. The adhesion promotion efficiency of catechol moieties is established by functionalizing EP with monofunctional amines (MFA) of 2-phenyl ethylamine and 3,4-dihydroxy phenylethylamine (DA). The curing activation of MFA-incorporated resin pointed toward a lower activation energy (50.1-52.1 kJ mol^-1) compared with the neat system (56.7-58 kJ mol^-1). The viscosity build-up and gelation are faster for the catechol-incorporated system, making it ideal for underwater bonding performance. The PTFE-based adhesive marble of the catechol-incorporated resin was stable and exhibited an adhesive strength of 7.5 MPa under underwater bonding conditions.

Stainless Steel Screen Modified with Renatured Xerogel for Efficient and Highly Stable Oil/Water Separation via Gravity

The application of hydrogel coatings to surface-modified metallic materials has gained considerable attention in engineering practice such as water-oil separation. However, the low coating adhesion and poor coating stability restrict its application. In this study, to obtain special wettability and durable filter materials, polyacrylamide (PAM)/sodium alginate (SA) xerogel particles were first prepared and adhered to a stainless steel screen by using an epoxy resin as a linker. Subsequently, the xerogel particles of the screen rehydrates in water to form a PAM-SA double-network hydrogel. The results show that the screen modified by PAM-SA xerogel of 20-30 μm particle size and a linker concentration of 0.1 g/mL resulted in a chimeric structure and subsequently transformed a uniform double-network hydrogel coating in water. According to the experimental results, the rough hydrogel coating exhibits superhydrophilicity and superoleophobicity under water; in particular, it has excellent wear resistance as well as physical and chemical stability. Under gravity-driven action, the PAM-SA-modified screen demonstrates high separation efficiency values of up to 99% in separating a wide range of oil/water mixtures and maintaining a water flux of (2-6) × 10⁴ L·m^-2·h^-1. There was no significant reduction in efficiency of separation and water flux after 10 cycles, indicating that the PAM-SA-modified screen is capable of offering outstanding separation performance and durability. Moreover, the hydrogel-modified screen demonstrated corrosion and swelling resistance in some extreme environments, paving a way for practical applications in water treatment. The novel hydrogel-coating-modified screen with ease of preparation holds great promise for oil/water separation and other engineering applications.

Advanced Bionic Attachment Equipment Inspired by the Attachment Performance of Aquatic Organisms: A Review

In nature, aquatic organisms have evolved various attachment systems, and their attachment ability has become a specific and mysterious survival skill for them. Therefore, it is significant to study and use their unique attachment surfaces and outstanding attachment characteristics for reference and develop new attachment equipment with excellent performance. Based on this, in this review, the unique non-smooth surface morphologies of their suction cups are classified and the key roles of these special surface morphologies in the attachment process are introduced in detail. The recent research on the attachment capacity of aquatic suction cups and other related attachment studies are described. Emphatically, the research progress of advanced bionic attachment equipment and technology in recent years, including attachment robots, flexible grasping manipulators, suction cup accessories, micro-suction cup patches, etc., is summarized. Finally, the existing problems and challenges in the field of biomimetic attachment are analyzed, and the focus and direction of biomimetic attachment research in the future are pointed out.

Mechanoactive Nanocomposite Hydrogel to Accelerate Wound Repair in Movable Parts

Dynamic full-thickness skin wound healing remains an intricate problem due to the humid environment and frequent exercise. Recently, multifunctional hydrogels have a great promise in wound repair. However, traditional hydrogels only keep the wound moist, protect the wound from bacterial infection, and cannot actively drive dynamic wound closure. Inspired by embryo wound active closure, we constructed a double-sided thermoresponsive mechanoactive (DTM) hydrogel that combines good flexibility, self-healing, wet-tissue adhesion, and antibacterial functions. The strong adhesion of the hydrogel to biological tissues is attributed to "multiple hydrogen bonding clusters" without any chemical reaction. The contraction force triggered by temperature is quickly transmitted to dynamic wound edges to resist external mechanical forces and drive wound closure, which can effectively avoid damage to surrounding healthy tissue and reduce the risk of scarring, infection, and inflammation caused by sutures, staples, or clips. Strikingly, in vivo, this hydrogel bandage actively enhanced wound repair in a full-thickness skin defect model by promoting collagen deposition, facilitating angiogenesis, and accelerating wound re-epithelialization. This mechanoactive biological method will provide a facile strategy for joint wound management and demonstrates strong potential in tissue remodeling.

Advances in Hemostatic Hydrogels That Can Adhere to Wet Surfaces

Currently, uncontrolled bleeding remains a serious problem in emergency, surgical and battlefield environments. Despite the specific properties of available hemostatic agents, sealants, and adhesives, effective hemostasis under wet and dynamic conditions remains a challenge. In recent years, polymeric hydrogels with excellent hemostatic properties have received much attention because of their adjustable mechanical properties, high porosity, and biocompatibility. In this review, to investigate the role of hydrogels in hemostasis, the mechanisms of hydrogel hemostasis and adhesion are firstly elucidated, the adhesion design strategies of hemostatic hydrogels in wet environments are briefly introduced, and then, based on a comprehensive literature review, the studies and in vivo applications of wet-adhesive hemostatic hydrogels in different environments are summarized, and the improvement directions of such hydrogels in future studies are proposed.

High Multi-Environmental Mechanical Stability and Adhesive Transparent Ionic Conductive Hydrogels Used as Smart Wearable Devices

Ionic conductive hydrogels used as flexible wearable sensor devices have attracted considerable attention because of their easy preparation, biocompatibility, and macro/micro mechanosensitive properties. However, developing an integrated conductive hydrogel that combines high mechanical stability, strong adhesion, and excellent mechanosensitive properties to meet practical requirements remains a great challenge owing to the incompatibility of properties. Herein, we prepare a multifunctional ionic conductive hydrogel by introducing high-modulus bacterial cellulose (BC) to form the skeleton of double networks, which exhibit great mechanical properties in both tensile (83.4 kPa, 1235.9% strain) and compressive (207.2 kPa, 79.9% strain) stress-strain tests. Besides, the fabricated hydrogels containing high-concentration Ca²⁺ show excellent anti-freezing (high ionic conductivities of 1.92 and 0.36 S/m at room temperature and -35 ∘C, respectively) properties. Furthermore, the sensing mechanism based on the conductive units and applied voltage are investigated to the benefit of the practical applications of prepared hydrogels. Therefore, the designed and fabricated hydrogels provide a novel strategy and can serve as candidates in the fields of sensors, ionic skins, and soft robots.

Underwater luminescent labeling materials constructed from a supramolecular approach

Underwater labeling under complicated conditions is challenging for modern adhesive materials. In this work, a series of supramolecular polymer adhesives were successfully prepared via the non-covalent copolymerization of low-molecular-weight monomers (thioctic acid (TA) and tetraphenylethene derivatives (TPEs)). Strong adhesion effects were observed under various conditions. The poly(TA-TPE)s showed long-term stability in underwater labeling. Due to the aggregation-induced emission (AIE) behavior of TPEs, poly(TA-TPE)s showed great potential as fluorescent labeling materials in water. Complicated and cryptographic information can be stored in labeling structures, and analyzed under ultraviolet (UV) irradiation. Supramolecular labeling showed excellent distinguishability in complex backgrounds. Meanwhile, fluorescent adhesives exhibited a number of advantages over visible colored labels.

Adhesive Materials Inspired by Barnacle Underwater Adhesion: Biological Principles and Biomimetic Designs

Wet adhesion technology has potential applications in various fields, especially in the biomedical field, yet it has not been completely mastered by humans. Many aquatic organisms (e.g., mussels, sandcastle worms, and barnacles) have evolved into wet adhesion specialists with excellent underwater adhesion abilities, and mimicking their adhesion principles to engineer artificial adhesive materials offers an important avenue to address the wet adhesion issue. The crustacean barnacle secretes a proteinaceous adhesive called barnacle cement, with which they firmly attach their bodies to almost any substrate underwater. Owing to the unique chemical composition, structural property, and adhesion mechanism, barnacle cement has attracted widespread research interest as a novel model for designing biomimetic adhesive materials, with significant progress being made. To further boost the development of barnacle cement–inspired adhesive materials (BCIAMs), it is necessary to systematically summarize their design strategies and research advances. However, no relevant reviews have been published yet. In this context, we presented a systematic review for the first time. First, we introduced the underwater adhesion principles of natural barnacle cement, which lay the basis for the design of BCIAMs. Subsequently, we classified the BCIAMs into three major categories according to the different design strategies and summarized their research advances in great detail. Finally, we discussed the research challenge and future trends of this field. We believe that this review can not only improve our understanding of the molecular mechanism of barnacle underwater adhesion but also accelerate the development of barnacle-inspired wet adhesion technology.
