Ultralong-Discharge-Time Biobattery Based on Immobilized Enzymes in Bilayer Rolled-Up Enzymatic Nanomembranes

Nitrogen and boron doped carbon layer coated multiwall carbon nanotubes as high performance anode materials for lithium ion batteries

Lithium ion batteries (LIBs) are at present widely used as energy storage and conversion device in our daily life. However, due to the limited power density, the application of LIBs is still restricted in some areas such as commercial vehicles or heavy-duty trucks. An effective strategy to solve this problem is to increase energy density through the development of battery materials. At the same time, a stable long cycling battery is a great demand of environmental protection and industry. Herein we present our new materials, nitrogen and boron doped carbon layer coated multiwall carbon nanotubes (NBC@MWCNTs), which can be used as anodes for LIBs. The electrochemical results demonstrate that the designed NBC@MWCNTs electrode possesses high stable capacity over an ultra-long cycling lifespan (5000 cycles) and superior rate capability even at very high current density (67.5 A g⁻¹). Such impressive lithium storage properties could be ascribed to the synergistic coupling effect of the distinctive structural features, the reduced diffusion length of lithium ions, more active sites generated by doped atoms for lithium storage, as well as the enhancement of the electrode structural integrity. Taken together, these results indicate that the N, B-doped carbon@MWCNTs materials may have great potential for applications in next-generation high performance rechargeable batteries.

3D Self-Assembled Microelectronic Devices: Concepts, Materials, Applications

Modern microelectronic systems and their components are essentially 3D devices that have become smaller and lighter in order to improve performance and reduce costs. To maintain this trend, novel materials and technologies are required that provide more structural freedom in 3D over conventional microelectronics, as well as easier parallel fabrication routes while maintaining compatability with existing manufacturing methods. Self-assembly of initially planar membranes into complex 3D architectures offers a wealth of opportunities to accommodate thin-film microelectronic functionalities in devices and systems possessing improved performance and higher integration density. Existing work in this field, with a focus on components constructed from 3D self-assembly, is reviewed, and an outlook on their application potential in tomorrow's microelectronics world is provided.

The emerging science of electrosynbionics

Dramatic changes in electricity generation, use and storage are needed to keep pace with increasing demand while reducing carbon dioxide emissions. There is great potential for application of bioengineering in this area. We have the tools to re-engineer biological molecules and systems, and a significant amount of research and development is being carried out on technologies such as biophotovoltaics, biocapacitors, biofuel cells and biobatteries. However, there does not seem to be a satisfactory overarching term to describe this area, and I propose a new word-'electrosynbionics'. This is to be defined as: the creation of engineered devices that use components derived from or inspired by biology to perform a useful electrical function. Here, the phrase 'electrical function' is taken to mean the generation, use and storage of electricity, where the primary charge carriers may be either electrons or ions. 'Electrosynbionics' is distinct from 'bioelectronics', which normally relates to applications in sensing, computing or electroceuticals. Electrosynbionic devices have the potential to solve challenges in electricity generation, use and storage by exploiting or mimicking some of the desirable attributes of biological systems, including high efficiency, benign operating conditions and intricate molecular structures.

Spatial Confined Synergistic Enzymes with Enhanced Uricolytic Performance and Reduced Toxicity for Effective Gout Treatment

Confinement of urate oxidase with detoxifying enzymes into multienzyme architecture is an appealing approach for gout treatment due to its capability to decompose serum uric acid without generation of H2 O2 . However, most of these strategies involve chemical modifications to the enzymes and barely consider enhancing the stability of the multienzyme architectures particularly against proteolysis, which significantly dampened its catalytic activity and in vivo stability. Herein, a novel strategy to prepare multienzyme nanoclusters with highly uricolytic activity and enhanced stability is demonstrated. With the close proximation, catalase can effectively decompose the H2 O2 generated by uricase during uricolysis. Moreover, with a shell structure constructed with polyethylene glycol, the nanocluster achieves great performance in reducing the nonspecific serum protein adsorptions and proteases digestion, leading to an enhanced circulation time after the intravenous administration. Such complementary multienzyme nanoclusters realize the long-term therapeutic effect in the management of serum uric acid level, without any toxicity or undesired immune responses in vivo. This work mimics the synergistic effect of protein complex in nature and can be further developed to a general method for the construction of multienzyme nanoclusters, which provides new opportunities for utilizing therapeutic enzymes for the treatment of metabolic diseases.
