Fabrication of Hollow CoP/TiOx Heterostructures for Enhanced Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Self-Reconstructed Metal-Organic Framework-Based Hybrid Electrocatalysts for Efficient Oxygen Evolution

Refining synthesis strategies for metal-organic framework (MOF)-based catalysts to improve their performance and stability in an oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a big challenge. In this study, a series of nanostructured electrocatalysts were synthesized through a solvothermal method by growing MOFs and metal-triazolates (METs) on nickel foam (NF) substrates (named MET-M/NF, M = Fe, Co, Cu), and these electrocatalysts could be used directly as OER self-supporting electrodes. Among these electrocatalysts, MET-Fe/NF exhibited the best OER performance, requiring only an overpotential of 122 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm-2 and showing remarkable stability over 15 h. The experimental results uncovered that MET-Fe/NF underwent an in situ structural reconstruction, resulting in the formation of numerous iron/nickel (oxy)hydroxides with high OER activity. Furthermore, in a two-electrode water-splitting setup, MET-Fe/NF only required 1.463 V to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm-2. Highlighting its potential for practical applications. This work provides insight into the design and development of efficient MOF-based OER catalysts.

Nickel-Cobalt Bimetal Hierarchical Hollow Nanosheets for Efficient Oxygen Evolution in Seawater

The electrochemical splitting of seawater is promising but also challenging for sustainable hydrogen gas production. Herein, ZIF-67 nanosheets are grown on nickel foam and then etched by Ni2+ in situ to obtain a hierarchical hollow nanosheets structure, which demonstrates outstanding OER performance in alkaline seawater (355 mV at 100 mA cm-2). Diven by a silicon solar panel, an overall electrolysis energy efficiency of 62% is achieved at a high current of 100 mA cm-2 in seawater electrolytes. This work provides a new design route for improving the catalytic activity of metal organic framework materials.

CoO supported NiFe layered double hydroxide sandwich-like nanosheets on hierarchical carbon framework for efficient electrocatalytic oxygen evolution

Exploration of greatly efficient and steady non-noble oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts is of great significance in improving the overall efficiency of energy density systems such as regenerative fuel cells, water electrolyzes, and metal-air batteries. Herein, inspired by hierarchical 3D porous structures with open microchannels of natural wood, CoO@NiFe LDH sandwich-like nanosheets were anchored on the carbonized wood (CW) via electrodeposition and calcination strategies. The strong interactions between CoO nanosheets and NiFe LDH nanosheets endow CoO@NiFe LDH/CW electrocatalyst with high catalytic properties toward the OER comparable to CoO/CW and NiFe LDH/CW. The optimized CoO@NiFe LDH/CW electrocatalyst demonstrates good OER catalytic performance with an overpotential of 230 mV at 100 mA cm-2. This work presents an innovative approach to utilize renewable resources for constructing advanced free-standing catalysts.

Oxygen Vacancy and Heterostructure Modulation of Co2P/Fe2P Electrocatalysts for Improving Total Water Splitting

Designing a stable and highly active catalyst for hydrogen evolution and oxygen evolution reactions (HER/OER) is essential for the industrialization of hydrogen energy but remains a major challenge. This work reports a simple approach to fabricating coupled Co2P/Fe2P nanorod array catalyst for overall water decomposition, demonstrating the source of excellent activity in the catalytic process. Under alkaline conditions, Co2P/Fe2P heterostructures exhibit an overpotential of 96 and 220 mV for HER and OER, respectively, at 10 mA cm-2. For total water splitting, a low voltage of 1.56 V is required to provide a current density of 10 mA cm-2. And the catalyst exhibits long-term durability for 30 h at a high current density of 250 mA cm-2. The analysis of the results revealed that the presence of interfacial oxygen vacancies and the strong interaction between Co2P/Fe2P provided the catalyst with more electrochemically active sites and a faster charge transfer capability, which improved the hydrolysis dissociation process. Electrochemically active metal (oxygen) hydroxide phases were produced after OER stability testing. The results of this study prove its great potential in practical industrial electrolysis and provide a reasonable and feasible strategy for the design of nonprecious metal phosphide electrocatalysts.

Core-Shell Structured Nanozyme with PDA-Mediated Enhanced Antioxidant Efficiency to Treat Early Intervertebral Disc Degeneration

Early intervention during intervertebral disc degeneration (IDD) plays a vital role in inhibiting its deterioration and activating the regenerative process. Aiming at the high oxidative stress (OS) in the IDD microenvironment, a core-shell structured nanozyme composed of Co-doped NiO nanoparticle (CNO) as the core encapsulated with a polydopamine (PDA) shell, named PDA@CNO, was constructed, hoping to regulate the pathological environment. The results indicated that the coexistence of abundant Ni3+/Ni2+and Co3+/Co2+redox couples in CNO provided rich catalytic sites; meanwhile, the quinone and catechol groups in the PDA shell could enable the proton-coupled electron transfer, thus endowing the PDA@CNO nanozyme with multiple antioxidative enzyme-like activities to scavenge •O2-, H2O2, and •OH efficiently. Under OS conditions in vitro, PDA@CNO could effectively reduce the intracellular ROS in nucleus pulposus (NP) into friendly H2O and O2, to protect NP cells from stagnant proliferation, abnormal metabolism (senescence, mitochondria dysfunction, and impaired redox homeostasis), and inflammation, thereby reconstructing the extracellular matrix (ECM) homeostasis. The in vivo local injection experiments further proved the desirable therapeutic effects of the PDA@CNO nanozyme in a rat IDD model, suggesting great potential in prohibiting IDD from deterioration.

Three-dimensional ordered macroporous molybdenum doped NiCoP honeycomb electrode for two-step water electrolysis

Two-step alkaline water electrolysis is considered a safe and efficient method for producing hydrogen from renewable energy. Reversal of the current polarity in a bifunctional electrocatalyst used as a gas evolution electrode (GEE) in two-step water electrolysis can generate H₂/O₂ at different times and in different spaces. The design of a bifunctional electrocatalyst with high durability and excellent activity is imperative to achieving continuous, safe, and pure H₂ generation via two-step alkaline water electrolysis. Here, we present for the first time a novel 3D Mo-doped NiCo phosphide honeycomb electrocatalyst that was grown on nickel foam (3D Mo-NiCoP/NF) and fabricated using polystyrene as a template. The electrocatalyst exhibited extremely low overpotentials in both the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER; 117 mV at 10 mA/cm²) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER; 344 mV at 100 mA/cm²). As a bifunctional electrocatalyst for two-step alkaline water electrolysis, the device had a 1.784 V cell voltage at 10 mA/cm², 95% decoupling efficiency, and ∼83% energy conversion efficiency. Taken together, the use of 3D Mo-NiCoP/NF as a GEE reduced the complexity and lowered the cost of the electrolyzer. The latter could be used to construct highly competitive water-splitting systems for continuous H₂ production and green energy harvesting.

Coupling Transition Metal Compound with Single-Atom Site for Water Splitting Electrocatalysis

Single-atom site catalysts (SACs) provide an ideal platform to identify the active centers, explore the catalytic mechanism, and establish the structure-property relationships, and thus have attracted increasing interests for electrocatalytic energy conversion. Substantial endeavors have been devoted to the construction of carbon-supported SACs, and their progress have been comprehensively reviewed. Compared with carbon-supported SACs, transition metal compounds (TMCs)-supported SACs are still in their infancy in the field of electrocatalysis. However, they have also aroused ever-increasing attention for driving electrocatalytic water splitting, and emerged as an indispensable class of SACs in recent years, predominately owing to their inherently structural features, such as rich anchoring sites, surface defects, and lattice vacancy. Herein, in this review, we have systematically summarized the recent advances of a variety of TMC supported SACs toward electrocatalytic water splitting. The advanced characterization techniques and theoretical analyses for identifying and monitoring the atomic structure of SACs are firstly manifested. Subsequently, the anchoring and stabilization mechanisms for TMC supported SACs are also highlighted. Thereafter, the advances of TMC supported SACs for driving water electrolysis are systematically unraveled.

Interfacial Engineering of Co3 O4 /Fe2 O3 Nano-Heterostructure Toward Superior Li-O2 Batteries

A major issue with Li-O₂ batteries is their slow oxygen reduction and evolution kinetics, necessitating catalysts with high catalytic activity to improve reaction kinetics and cycle stability. Herein, a nano-heterostructured catalyst composed of Co₃ O₄ and Fe₂ O₃ (Co₃ O₄ /Fe₂ O₃ ) with a porous rod morphology is achieved through an interfacial engineering strategy by constructing Fe₂ O₃ on the Co₃ O₄ surface, which can function as a high-performance cathode in order to efficiently encourage the oxygen reduction and evolution while also reduce the battery polarization during charging and discharging. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations show the differences in charge density at the interface of nano-heterostructures, demonstrating the occurrence of an electron transfer process in the interface region of Co₃ O₄ and Fe₂ O₃ , implying a strong electronic coupling transfer, and in turn changing the electronic structure of the Co₃ O₄ . This significantly reduces the adsorption energy of LiO₂ intermediates, thereby effectively lowering the overpotential. The resultant Li-O₂ battery has larger discharge specific capacity, lower overpotential for the efficient oxygen evolution/reduction, as well as good cycling stability of 280 cycles. This work demonstrates an effective method to fabricate the nano-heterostrucutred materials with enhanced catalytic efficiency for advanced energy applications.

Heterostructure of Semiconductors on Self-Supported Cuprous Phosphide Nanowires for Enhanced Overall Water Splitting

Rational design, controllable synthesis, and an in-depth mechanism study of Cu-based bifunctional semiconductor heterostructures toward overall water splitting (OWS) are imperative but still face challenges. Herein, n-type iron oxide and p-type nickel phosphide and cobalt phosphide are respectively coupled with p-type cuprous phosphide nanowires on Cu foams via a general growth-phosphorization strategy. These self-supported semiconductor heterojunctions with different built-in potentials (E_BI) are used as binder-free electrodes for OWS and exhibit significantly improved electrocatalytic activities compared to their counterparts. Among them, the heterostructure with the largest E_BI of 1.57 V attains the smallest overpotential of 97 mV at 10 mA cm^-2 for the hydrogen evolution reaction and 243 mV at 50 mA cm^-2 for the oxygen evolution reaction in 1 M KOH. The corresponding two-electrode electrolyzer requires a cell voltage of 1.685 V at 50 mA cm^-2 and shows admirable long-term stability at 100 mA cm^-2 with a Faraday efficiency of around 98%. These promoted electrocatalytic performances originate from the enhanced active site, accelerated charge transfer, enlarged electrochemical active surface area, and synergy between different components at the heterointerface. This work represents a promising avenue to construct cost-efficient semiconductor heterostructures as bifunctional electrocatalysts applied to the sustainable energy industry.

Construction of Petal-Like Ag NWs@NiCoP with Three-Dimensional Core-Shell Structure for Overall Water Splitting

High-efficiency, good electrical conductivity and excellent performance electrocatalysts are attracting growing attention in the field of overall water splitting. In order to achieve the desirable qualities, rational construction of the structure and chemical composition of electrocatalysts is of fundamental importance. Herein, petal-like structure Ni0.33Co0.67P shells grown on conductive silver nanowires (Ag NWs) cores as bifunctional electrocatalysts for overall water splitting were synthesized through a facile hydrothermal method and phosphorization. The resultant three-dimensional core-shell petal-like structure Ag NWs@Ni0.33Co0.67P possesses excellent catalytic activities in alkaline conditions with the overpotential of 259 mV for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), 121 mV for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and a full cell voltage of 1.64 V to reach the current density of 10 mA cm-2. Highly conductive Ag NWs as cores and high surface area petal-like Ni0.33Co0.67P as shells can endow outstanding catalytic performance for the bifunctional electrocatalyst. Thus, the synthetic strategy of the three-dimensional core-shell structure Ag NWs@Ni0.33Co0.67P considerably advances the practice of Ag NWs toward electrocatalysts.

Critical Review, Recent Updates on Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework-67 (ZIF-67) and Its Derivatives for Electrochemical Water Splitting

Design and construction of low-cost electrocatalysts with high catalytic activity and long-term stability is a challenging task in the field of catalysis. Metal-organic frameworks (MOF) are promising candidates as precursor materials in the development of highly efficient electrocatalysts for energy conversion and storage applications. This review starts with a summary of basic concepts and key evaluation parameters involved in the electrochemical water-splitting reaction. Then, different synthesis approaches reported for the cobalt-based Zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-67) and its derivatives are critically reviewed. Additionally, several strategies employed to enhance the electrocatalytic activity and stability of ZIF-67-based electrocatalysts are discussed in detail. The present review provides a succinct insight into the ZIF-67 and its derivatives (oxides, hydroxides, sulfides, selenides, phosphide, nitrides, telluride, heteroatom/metal-doped carbon, noble metal-supported ZIF-67 derivatives) reported for oxygen evolution reaction (OER), hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), and overall water splitting applications. Finally, this review concludes with the associated challenges and the perspectives on developing the best economic, durable electrocatalytic materials.

2D FeP Nanoframe Superlattices via Space-Confined Topochemical Transformation

Self-assembled nanocrystal superlattices represent an emergent class of designer materials with potentially programmable functionalities. The ability to construct hierarchically structured nanocrystal superlattices with tailored geometry and porosity is critical for extending their applications. Here, 2D superlattices comprising monolayer FeP nanoframes are synthesized through a space-confined topochemical transformation approach induced by the Kirkendall effect, using carbon-coated Fe₃ O₄ nanocube superlattices as a precursor. The particle shape and the close-packed nature of Fe₃ O₄ nanocubes as well as the interconnected carbon layer network contribute to the topochemical transformation process. The resulting 2D FeP nanoframe superlattices possess several unique and advantageous structural features that are unavailable in conventional 3D nanocrystal superlattices, which make them particularly attractive for catalytic applications. As a proof of concept, such 2D FeP nanoframe superlattices are harnessed as highly efficient and durable electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction, the performance of which is superior to that of most FeP-based catalysts reported previously. This topochemical transformation approach is scalable and general, representing a new route of designing hierarchical superlattices with highly open features that cannot be accessible by traditional self-assembly methods.

Heterointerface Engineering of Hierarchically Assembling Layered Double Hydroxides on Cobalt Selenide as Efficient Trifunctional Electrocatalysts for Water Splitting and Zinc-Air Battery

Engineering of structure and composition is essential but still challenging for electrocatalytic activity modulation. Herein, hybrid nanostructured arrays (HNA) with branched and aligned structures constructed by cobalt selenide (CoSe2 ) nanotube arrays vertically oriented on carbon cloth with CoNi layered double hydroxide (CoSe2 @CoNi LDH HNA) are synthesized by a hydrothermal-selenization-hybridization strategy. The branched and hollow structure, as well as the heterointerface between CoSe2 and CoNi LDH guarantee structural stability and sufficient exposure of the surface active sites. More importantly, the strong interaction at the interface can effectively modulate the electronic structure of hybrids through the charge transfer and then improves the reaction kinetics. The resulting branched CoSe2 @CoNi LDH HNA as trifunctional catalyst exhibits enhanced electrocatalytic performance toward oxygen evolution/reduction and hydrogen evolution reaction. Consequently, the branched CoSe2 @CoNi LDH HNA exhibits low overpotential of 1.58 V at 10 mA cm-2 for water splitting and superior cycling stability (70 h) for rechargeable flexible Zn-air battery. Theoretical calculations reveal that the construction of heterostructure can effectively lower the reaction barrier as well as improve electrical conductivity, consequently favoring the enhanced electrochemical performance. This work concerning engineering heterostructure and topography-performance relationship can provide new guidance for the development of multifunctional electrocatalysts.

Rational Synthesis and Regulation of Hollow Structural Materials for Electrocatalytic Nitrogen Reduction Reaction

The electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) is known as a promising mean of nitrogen fixation to mitigate the energy crisis and facilitate fertilizer production under mild circumstances. For electrocatalytic reactions, the design of efficient catalysts is conducive to reducing activation energy and accelerating lethargic dynamics. Among them, hollow structural materials possess cavities in their structures, which can slack off the escape rate of N2 and reaction intermediates, prolong the residence time of N2 , enrich the reaction intermediates' concentration, and shorten electron transportation path, thereby further enhancing their NRR activity. Here, the basic synthetic strategies of hollow structural materials are introduced first. Then, the recent breakthroughs in hollow structural materials as NRR catalysts are reviewed from the perspective of intrinsic, mesoscopic, and microscopic regulations, aiming to discuss how structures affect and improve the catalytic performance. Finally, the future research directions of hollow structural materials as NRR catalysts are discussed. This review is expected to provide an outlook for optimizing hollow structural NRR catalysts.

Critical Role of Phosphorus in Hollow Structures Cobalt-Based Phosphides as Bifunctional Catalysts for Water Splitting

Cobalt phosphides electrocatalysts have great potential for water splitting, but the unclear active sides hinder the further development of cobalt phosphides. Wherein, three different cobalt phosphides with the same hollow structure morphology (CoP-HS, CoP₂ -HS, CoP₃ -HS) based on the same sacrificial template of ZIF-67 are prepared. Surprisingly, these cobalt phosphides exhibit similar OER performances but quite different HER performances. The identical OER performance of these CoP_x -HS in alkaline solution is attributed to the similar surface reconstruction to CoOOH. CoP-HS exhibits the best catalytic activity for HER among these CoP_x -HS in both acidic and alkaline media, originating from the adjusted electronic density of phosphorus to affect absorption-desorption process on H. Moreover, the calculated ΔG_H* based on P-sites of CoP-HS follows a quite similar trend with the normalized overpotential and Tafel slope, indicating the important role of P-sites for the HER process. Moreover, CoP-HS displays good performance (cell voltage of 1.67 V at a current density of 50 mA cm^-2 ) and high stability in 1 M KOH. For the first time, this work detailly presents the critical role of phosphorus in cobalt-based phosphides for water splitting, which provides the guidance for future investigations on transition metal phosphides from material design to mechanism understanding.

Self-supported and defect-rich CoP nanowire arrays with abundant catalytic sites as a highly efficient bifunctional electrocatalyst for water splitting

In 1.0 M KOH, p-CoP/NF shows outstanding HER and OER activity. Furthermore when p-CoP/NF is assembled into a two-electrode cell, a voltage of only 1.55 V is needed to achieve 10 mA cm−2, and it can maintain long-term stability.

Dispersed FeOx nanoparticles decorated with Co2SiO4 hollow spheres for enhanced oxygen evolution reaction

Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) has drawn ever-increasing attention because of its essential role in various renewable-energy technologies. In spite of tremendous research efforts, developing high-performance OER catalysts at low cost remains a great challenge. Inspired by two earth-abundant elements Fe and Si, herein, we report a Fe-Co₂SiO₄ composite consisting of well dispersed iron oxide (FeO_x) decorated Co₂SiO₄ hollow nanospheres as an economical and promising OER catalyst. Although Co₂SiO₄ or FeO_x alone has little OER activity, their composite exhibits satisfied performance, that is highly related to geometric effect and bimetal component electronic interactions. The Fe-Co₂SiO₄ composite exhibits comparable catalytic activity to most of transition mental oxide/hydroxide relevant composites at 10 mA cm^-2. It is even 1.6 times higher than commercial RuO₂ electrocatalyst at high current density 100 mA cm^-2 in alkaline solution. In this work, surface decoration of transition metal silicate provides a new horizon to design high-performance and economical OER catalysts.

Construction of pH-Dependent Nanozymes with Oxygen Vacancies as the High-Efficient Reactive Oxygen Species Scavenger for Oral-Administrated Anti-Inflammatory Therapy

It is of great significance to eliminate excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) for treating inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Herein, for the first time, a novel nanozyme NiCo₂ O₄ @PVP is constructed via a step-by-step strategy. Noticeably, the existence of oxygen vacancy in the NiCo₂ O₄ @PVP is helpful for capturing oxygenated compounds, while both redox couples of Co³⁺ /Co²⁺ and Ni³⁺ /Ni²⁺ will offer richer catalytic sites. As expected, the obtained NiCo₂ O₄ @PVP exhibits pH-dependent multiple mimic enzymatic activities. Benefiting from the introduction of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), the NiCo₂ O₄ @PVP possesses good physiological stability and excellent biosafety in stomach and intestines' environment. Meanwhile, the NiCo₂ O₄ @PVP also presents strong scavenging activities to ROS in vitro, including ^• O₂ ^- , H₂ O₂ , as well as ^• OH. Furthermore, a dextran sodium sulfate (DSS)-induced colitis model is established for evaluating the anti-inflammatory activity of NiCo₂ O₄ @PVP in vivo. Based on the size-mediated and charge-mediated mechanisms, the nanozyme can pass through the digestive tract and target the inflamed site for oral-administrated anti-inflammatory therapy. More interestingly, compared with the model group, the expression levels of inflammatory factors (e.g., Interleukin- 6 (IL-6), Interleukin- 1β (IL-1β), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS)) in colon of mice show a significant decrease after nanozyme intervention, thereby inhibiting the development of IBD. In short, current work provides an alternative therapy for patients suffering from IBD.

One-dimensional CoP/MnO hollow nanostructures with enhanced oxygen evolution reaction activity

Cobalt-based transition metal phosphides are flourishing as OER electrocatalysts. In this study, the CoP/MnO hollow nanofibers with the advantages of a more extensive contact interface were successfully synthesized. We found that the construction of hollow nanostructures and the composite of oxides are effective strategies to optimize the OER catalytic performance of transition metal phosphides. The template of the precursor can adjust the hollow nanostructure and keep it stable during the phosphating process. It is worth noting that the CoP/MnO composite material only needs an overpotential of 230 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm^-2. In addition, it maintains the overpotential 263.5 mV after 5000 cycles of voltammetry measurements. In short, this research provides a simple solution for the design and realization of nanostructured electrocatalysts with excellent electrochemical performance.

Nanowire-structured FeP-CoP arrays as highly active and stable bifunctional electrocatalyst synergistically promoting high-current overall water splitting

The design and construction of highly efficient and durable non-noble metal bifunctional catalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline media is essential for developing the hydrogen economy. To achieve this goal, we have developed a bifunctional nanowire-structured FeP-CoP array catalyst on carbon cloth with uniform distribution through in-situ hydrothermal growth and phosphating treatment. The unique nanowire array structure and the strong electronic interaction between FeP and CoP species have been confirmed. Electrochemical studies have found that the designed Fe_0.14Co_0.86-P/CC catalyst appears excellent HER (130 mV@10 mA cm^-2)/OER (270 mV@10 mA cm^-2) activity and stability. Moreover, the bifunctional Fe_0.14Co_0.86-P/CC^(+/-) catalyst is also used in simulated industrial water splitting system, where the pair catalyst requires about 1.95 and 2.14 V to reach 500 and 1000 mA cm^-2, even superior to the control RuO₂⁽⁺⁾||Pt/C^(-) catalyst, showing good industrial application prospects. These excellent electrocatalytic properties are attributed to the synergy between FeP and CoP species as well as the unique microstructure, which can accelerate charge transfer, expose more active sites and enhance electrolyte diffusion and gas emissions.

Interfacial electronic modulation of CoP-CoO p-p type heterojunction for enhancing oxygen evolution reaction

Heterojunction can effectively improve oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity by regulating the interfacial electronic structure of catalysts. However, p-p type heterojunction OER catalysts have obtained less attention, and the corresponding catalytic mechanisms are unclear either. Herein, the self-supported CoP-CoO p-p type heterojunction arrays are fabricated on carbon cloth substrate (CoP-CoO/CC). Band structure analysis shows that the formation of p-p heterojunction can drive the electrons from CoO to flow into CoP. This electronic modulation contributes to positively charged regions on the CoO and enhances the OH^- adsorption during OER, proven by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and methanol molecular detection, respectively. As a result, the CoP-CoO/CC electrode only needs 210 mV overpotential to drive a current density of 10 mA cm^-2 in an alkaline medium, superior to the most reported OER catalysts. Additionally, the CoP-CoO/CC also exhibits an ideal hydrogen evolution reaction response, and a water splitting system has been successfully constructed which can drive a 10 mA cm^-2 within 1.65 V. This study supplies insight for catalytic origins p-p type heterojunctions OER catalyst, which provides a reference value for the efficient and reasonable design of heterojunction catalysts.

Advanced Transition Metal-Based OER Electrocatalysts: Current Status, Opportunities, and Challenges

Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is an important half-reaction involved in many electrochemical applications, such as water splitting and rechargeable metal-air batteries. However, the sluggish kinetics of its four-electron transfer process becomes a bottleneck to the performance enhancement. Thus, rational design of electrocatalysts for OER based on thorough understanding of mechanisms and structure-activity relationship is of vital significance. This review begins with the introduction of OER mechanisms which include conventional adsorbate evolution mechanism and lattice-oxygen-mediated mechanism. The reaction pathways and related intermediates are discussed in detail, and several descriptors which greatly assist in catalyst screen and optimization are summarized. Some important parameters suggested as measurement criteria for OER are also mentioned and discussed. Then, recent developments and breakthroughs in experimental achievements on transition metal-based OER electrocatalysts are reviewed to reveal the novel design principles. Finally, some perspectives and future directions are proposed for further catalytic performance enhancement and deeper understanding of catalyst design. It is believed that iterative improvements based on the understanding of mechanisms and fundamental design principles are essential to realize the applications of efficient transition metal-based OER electrocatalysts for electrochemical energy storage and conversion technologies.

Porous Fe5Si3 intermetallic anode for the oxygen evolution reaction in acidic electrolytes

Here, we show that a reactive synthesis method of mixed elemental powders can be used to synthesize a porous electrode consisting of an intermetallic Fe₅Si₃ that exhibits catalytic activity towards oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in acidic solutions, which is capable of delivering 10 mA cm^-2 at an overpotential of 0.73 V and a small Tafel slope of ~ 381.8 mV dec^-1. The amorphous silica formed in the anode surface during the electrochemical process is multifunctional, as it protects the electrode substrate from corrosion and acts as electrocatalysts for OER. Remarkably, the Si-based intermetallics can be generalized to include other OER catalytic elements (Mn, Fe, Co), including Mn-Si and Co-Si intermetallics.

Hierarchically Assembling CoFe Prussian Blue Analogue Nanocubes on CoP Nanosheets as Highly Efficient Electrocatalysts for Overall Water Splitting

Efficient and durable electrocatalysts are highly desirable for overall water splitting. Herein, a facile strategy is demonstrated to rationally construct CoFe Prussian blue analogues (PBA)@CoP cube-on-sheet hierarchical structure by etching reaction with intermediated CoO to form PBA nanocubes. Benefitting from the heterostructured engineering, the as-synthesized CoFe PBA@CoP presents remarkable electrocatalytic performance in 1.0 m KOH, only requiring overpotentials of 100 mV for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and 171 mV for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) to reach the 10 mA cm^-2 current density with good stability. Extraordinarily enhanced electrocatalytic performance is ascribed to not only the rapid charge transfer of active species, but also the synergistic effect between each component to achieve tuned electronic structure and abundant electrocatalytic active sites. Especially, the assembled two-electrode cell using CoFe PBA@CoP as both cathode and anode delivers the current densities of 10 mA cm^-2 at a relatively low cell voltage of 1.542 V, outperforming most of low-cost bifunctional electrocatalysts reported to date. The controllable and versatile strategy will open up an avenue to prepare hybrid films for advanced electrochemical energy storage and conversion.

Metal-Organic-Framework-Derived Nanostructures as Multifaceted Electrodes in Metal-Sulfur Batteries

Metal-sulfur batteries (MSBs) are considered up-and-coming future-generation energy storage systems because of their prominent theoretical energy density. However, the practical applications of MSBs are still hampered by several critical challenges, i.e., the shuttle effects, sluggish redox kinetics, and low conductivity of sulfur species. Recently, benefiting from the high surface area, regulated networks, molecular/atomic-level reactive sites, the metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)-derived nanostructures have emerged as efficient and durable multifaceted electrodes in MSBs. Herein, a timely review is presented on recent advancements in designing MOF-derived electrodes, including fabricating strategies, composition management, topography control, and electrochemical performance assessment. Particularly, the inherent charge transfer, intrinsic polysulfide immobilization, and catalytic conversion on designing and engineering of MOF nanostructures for efficient MSBs are systematically discussed. In the end, the essence of how MOFs' nanostructures influence their electrochemical properties in MSBs and conclude the future tendencies regarding the construction of MOF-derived electrodes in MSBs is exposed. It is believed that this progress review will provide significant experimental/theoretical guidance in designing and understanding the MOF-derived nanostructures as multifaceted electrodes, thus offering promising orientations for the future development of fast-kinetic and robust MSBs in broad energy fields.

Constructed Interfacial Oxygen-Bridge Chemical Bonding in Core-Shell Transition Metal Phosphides/Carbon Hybrid Boosting Oxygen Evolution Reaction

A designed structure which CoP nanoparticles (NPs) ingeniously connected with graphene-like carbon layer via in-situ generated interfacial oxygen-bridge chemical bonding was achieved by a mild phosphorization treatment. The results proved that the presence of phosphorus vacancies is a crucial factor enabling formation of Co-O-C bonds. The direct coupling of edge Co of CoP with the oxygen from functional groups on the carbon layer was proposed. As a catalyst for electrocatalytic water splitting, the manufactured Fe₂ O₃ @C@CoP core-shell structure manifested a low overpotential of 230 mV, a low Tafel slope of 55 mV dec^-1 , and long-term stability. Density functional theory calculations verified that the Co-O-C bond played a critical role in decreasing the thermodynamic energy barrier of reaction rate-determining step for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). This synthetic route might be extended to construct metal-O-C bonds in other transition metal phosphides (or selenides, sulfides)/carbon composites for highly efficient OER catalysts.

Interfacial engineering of CeO2 on NiCoP nanoarrays for efficient electrocatalytic oxygen evolution

Transition metal phosphides (TMP)-based oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts constructed by interface engineering strategy have a broad prospect due to their low cost and good performance. Herein, a novel CeO₂/NiCoP nanoarray with intimate phosphide (NiCoP)-oxide (CeO₂) interface was developed via in situ generation on nickel foam (NF). This structure is conducive to increasing active sites and accelerating charge transfer, and may be conducive to regulating electronic structure and adsorption energy. As expected, optimal 1.4-CeO₂/NiCoP/NF delivers a low overpotential of 249 mV at the current density of 10 mA cm^-2 with a Tafel slope of 77.2 mV dec^-1. CeO₂/NiCoP/NF boasts one of the best OER catalytic materials among recently reported phosphides (TMP)-based OER catalysts and composite catalysts involving CeO₂. This work provides an effective strategy for the construction of hetero-structure with CeO₂ with oxygen vacancies to improve the OER performance of phosphides.

Controllable synthesis of CoFe2Se4/NiCo2Se4 hybrid nanotubes with heterointerfaces and improved oxygen evolution reaction performance

The rational construction of heterointerfaces in hollow nanohybrids is considered as a promising and challenging approach for enhancing their electrocatalytic performance. Herein, we demonstrate the synthesis of CoFe₂Se₄/NiCo₂Se₄ hybrid nanotubes (CFSe/NCSe HNTs) with open ends and abundant heterointerfaces. The CFSe/NCSe HNT hybrid nanotubes are obtained by using NiCo₂-aspartic acid nanofibres (NiCo-Asp NFs) as the templates which can be converted to the CFSe/NCSe HNTs via proton etching, three metal coprecipitation, Kirkendall effect and anion-exchange reaction. The CFSe/NCSe HNTs may function as the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts, and they exhibit a low overpotential of 224 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm^-2 and outstanding stability with only 1.4% current density change even after 15 h, superior to those of the reported single-component counterparts. The obtained density of states and differential charge density confirm the existence of a heterointerface which can induce the accumulation of electrons at the interface of CFSe-NCSe and consequently increase the carrier density and electrical conductivity of the CFSe/NCSe HNTs. This research provides a new avenue for the fabrication of hollow nanohybrids with heterointerfaces.

Delicate Control on the Shell Structure of Hollow Spheres Enables Tunable Mass Transport in Water Splitting

In the study of structure-property relationships for rational materials design, hollow multishell structures (HoMSs) have attracted tremendous attention owing to the optimal balance between mass transfer and surface exposure. Considering the shell structure can significantly affect the properties of HoMSs, in this paper, we provide a novel one-step strategy to continually regulate the shell structures of HoMSs. Through a simple phosphorization process, we can effectively modify the shell from solid to bubble-like and even duplicate the shells with a narrow spacing. Benefitting from the structure merits, the fabricated CoP HoMSs with close duplicated shells can promote gas release owing to the unbalanced Laplace pressure, while accelerating liquid transfer for enhanced capillary force. It can provide effective channels for water and gas and thus exhibits a superior electrocatalytic performance in the hydrogen and oxygen evolution reaction.

Nanostructured metal phosphides: from controllable synthesis to sustainable catalysis

Metal phosphides (MPs) with unique and desirable physicochemical properties provide promising potential in practical applications, such as the catalysis, gas/humidity sensor, environmental remediation, and energy storage fields, especially for transition metal phosphides (TMPs) and MPs consisting of group IIIA and IVA metal elements. Most studies, however, on the synthesis of MP nanomaterials still face intractable challenges, encompassing the need for a more thorough understanding of the growth mechanism, strategies for large-scale synthesis of targeted high-quality MPs, and practical achievement of functional applications. This review aims at providing a comprehensive update on the controllable synthetic strategies for MPs from various metal sources. Additionally, different passivation strategies for engineering the structural and electronic properties of MP nanostructures are scrutinized. Then, we showcase the implementable applications of MP-based materials in emerging sustainable catalytic fields including electrocatalysis, photocatalysis, mild thermocatalysis, and related hybrid systems. Finally, we offer a rational perspective on future opportunities and remaining challenges for the development of MPs in the materials science and sustainable catalysis fields.

Three-Dimensional Transition Metal Phosphide Heteronanorods for Efficient Overall Water Splitting

The development of low-cost electrocatalysts with excellent activity and durability for both the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) poses a huge challenge in water splitting. In this study, a simple and scalable strategy is proposed to fabricate 3 D heteronanorods on nickel foam, in which nickel molybdenum phosphide nanorods are covered with cobalt iron phosphide (P-NM-CF HNRs). As a result of the rational design, the P-NM-CF HNRs have a large surface area, tightly connected interfaces, optimized electronic structures, and synergy between the metal atoms. Accordingly, the P-NM-CF HNRs exhibit a remarkably high catalytic activity for the OER under alkaline conditions and wide-pH HER. For overall water splitting, the catalyst only requires a voltage of 1.53 V to reach a current density of 10 mA cm^-2 in 1 m KOH with prominent stability, and the activity is not degraded after stability testing for 36 h. This new strategy can inspire the design of durable nonprecious-metal catalysts for large-scale industrial water splitting.

Simple 2 D/0 D CoP Integration in a Metal-Organic Framework-Derived Bifunctional Electrocatalyst for Efficient Overall Water Splitting

Non-noble metal-based bifunctional electrocatalysts are highly desired for water electrolysis. However, constructing a water electrolyzer using a sole catalyst without compromising either its oxygen evolution reaction (OER) or hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance is still challenging. In this study, a simple strategy is developed to integrate 2 D and 0 D CoP in the same metal-organic framework precursor-derived hollow N-doped carbon nanotube-assembled polyhedron (HNCNP). The unique hierarchical structure endows the resulting nanocomposite with both the advantages of more exposed active sites for 2 D and large surface-to-volume ratio for 0 D materials, whereas the hollow interior could benefit the charge and mass transfer properties. Thus, CoP/HNCNP@2 D CoP exhibits outstanding OER and HER activity and a low cell voltage when employed as both the anode and cathode in a two-electrode water electrolyzer. The approach of integrating the same metal phosphide phase with diverse dimensions may inspire new ways to design hierarchical nanostructures for advanced energy conversion applications.

Enhanced Oxygen Evolution Reaction Activity of a Co2P@NC-Fe2P Composite Boosted by Interfaces Between a N-Doped Carbon Matrix and Fe2P Microspheres

Constructing highly efficient and low-cost transition-metal-based electrocatalysts with a large number of interfaces to increase their active site densities constitutes a major advancement in the development of water-splitting technology. Herein, a bimetallic phosphide composite (Co₂P@NC-Fe₂P) is successfully synthesized from a ferric hydroxyphosphate-zeolitic imidazolate framework hybrid precursor (FeHP-ZIF-67). Benefitting from morphology and composition regulations, the FeHP-ZIF-67 precursor is prepared by a room-temperature solution synthesis method, which exhibits an optimal morphology, where FeHP microspheres are coated with excess ZIF-67 nanoparticles. During the annealing of FeHP-ZIF-67, FeHP serves as a source of phosphorus to form Fe₂P and Co₂P simultaneously, where Co₂P nanoparticles coated with an N-doped carbon (NC) matrix derived from ZIF-67 are partially adsorbed onto the surface of Fe₂P microspheres, thereby forming numerous NC-Fe₂P interfaces. The optimal Co₂P@NC-Fe₂P composite has an overpotential of 260 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm^-2, a small Tafel slope of 41 mV dec^-1, and long-term stability of over 35 h in an alkaline medium for oxygen evolution reactions (OERs). Such a superior OER performance is attributed to the active NC-Fe₂P interfaces in the Co₂P@NC-Fe₂P composite. This work provides a new strategy to optimize transition-metal phosphides with effective interfaces for OER electrocatalysis.
